Hedgehog Haven

Autumn is underway so when raking fallen leaves, please check for sleeping hedgehogs - better still make a large pile of dry leaves in a quiet corner for a nest.

With 5 November approaching, another ideal nest site is a bonfire so please check before lighting.

In the last three weeks, five hedgehogs have been released back into the wild. Unfortunately, Trump (pictured) is blind so she stays in my care as a long-termer - a blind hedgehog doesn't make a nest so would be vulnerable to the elements and other animals.

North Walsham Poor’s Allotment Charity Registered charity no 214445

Are you in financial difficulties because of household debts, ill health, benefit changes, unemployment, extra school or college expenses? Would a small grant help ease the problem and give you the chance to get back in control?

Now is the chance to apply for a small financial grant available for people living in North Walsham, with preference given to applicants who have lived within the parish for at least three years and are able to demonstrate their needs to the Trustees.

Applications from individuals or organisations working to support residents of North Walsham are accepted. Also young people starting a new career, college or other training may apply. Documents to support the application are required.

The next meeting of the Trustees will be Tuesday 21 November, applications to be submitted by Monday 13 November 2017.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

The October meeting in the Community Centre was well attended and particularly special as one of our members, George Gorham from Cromer, was celebrating his 100th birthday. He received a special cake with candles and a birthday posy.

Four members of the Committee had chosen and read a selection of poetry and this was followed by the usual afternoon tea prepared and served by our five regular helpers.

North Walsham & District Archive Calendar North Walsham & District Community Archive has always endeavoured to collect as much photographic history of the town as possible, to keep it safe for future generations and to make it available to the public. Our beautiful calendar has quickly became a favourite with those who grew up in the town, newcomers to the town interested in its history and copies are also sent all over the world, via our website, to those who grew up here but now live further away.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB

Earlier this month we hosted a demonstration by Linda Smith from Nottingham whose title was ‘The Italian Job’.

Later this month we will be welcoming Floral Designer, Lee Berrill, from Northampton where he has a floristry business.

A wonderfully inspiring afternoon enjoyed by us all – I am sure she will be back with another of her demonstrations.

Looking ahead to our 23 November meeting at The Catholic Church Hall, and a Christmas themed demonstration by Wendy Goodliffe from Spalding. She will be doing six designs with Christmas Carols as the theme. If you are looking for inspiration for your own

It was clear that Linda loves Italy and its culture and she interpreted it beautifully in her floral designs, which ranged from Ferrari to gelato ice creams and opera.

Lee will be demonstrating at The Atrium on 26 October followed by our traditional Afternoon Tea. Tickets are now all sold, but I will post a report and photos next time.

Pre-school’s second outstanding result!

A rural north Norfolk pre-school has obtained its second ‘outstanding’ grading across the board.

The pre-school, which meets in Worstead Village Hall, was last inspected in November 2014, when it was known as ‘Dilham Pre-school’ - it has changed premises and its name – but clearly not its standards.

Ofsted inspector Lindsey Cullum reported that staff are highly skilled in providing a warm, caring environment that supports each child and their family. She said the passion and enthusiasm of the staff helped all children to receive the highest quality care and achieve

the best possible outcomes.

Ms Cullum also praised the innovative learning experiences that provide optimum challenge and are sharply focused on what children need to learn next. She added that staff secure extremely effective partnerships working with parents, who are fully involved in all aspects of the children’s assessments and learning including providing parents with meaningful guidance and advice to help them support their children’s learning at home.

Children thoroughly enjoy their time at preschool, whether it is preparing their own snacks and demonstrating their complete understanding

Christmas decoration at home then join us for an enjoyable afternoon & maybe the odd mince pie too. Doors open 1.30pm. Demonstration starts at 2.30pm. Glenis Dillon

of how eating well and good hygiene routines keep their bodies strong and healthy, to being outside in the highly stimulating learning environment, problem solving, building bridges or using their imagination as they play.

Michelle Jacques, chairperson of the pre-school, was delighted with the report. “To obtain an ‘outstanding’ grading for the second time in a row shows how hard the staff continually work and that Worstead Pre-school is the best environment there is for two to five year olds.”

For more information about the pre-school, which caters for up to 26 children in each session, please look on their website www.worsteadpreschool.co.uk or telephone 01692 535692.

Christmas at Emms Stems

After 19 years of being a Florist I'm very proud to have opened my own Flower Shop nearly 8 years ago!

Emms Stems Florist has grown more and more each year. It was always a risk opening a business in a rural location but I'm pleased to say it has been a huge success. I pride myself on making beautiful arrangements and Bouquets.

Having created hundreds of beautiful Weddings with some lovely couples is always something I love to do. Equally it's a privilege to be asked to arrange Tribute Flowers for Funerals, as for me personally it's something close to my heart as this was the reason I began Floristry. Each year we hold a special Christmas Event for people to come and see the beautiful arrangements, Wreaths, Fresh Christmas Trees, Christmas Gift Ideas and Festive Decorations. This year we decided to change the day and time of the Event to a Saturday 11th November from 12pm till 5pm.

We look forward to welcoming you all to our truly lovely Christmas Festive Event.

Jazz at the Hub – October - Black History Month

On Sunday 29 October, the Hub, at Sheringham Little Theatre, will be hosting the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band as part of the Norfolk Black History Month series of events. The programme will feature the music of black musicians from, predominantly, the first half of the 20th century. Musicians as diverse and exciting as Louis Armstrong and Paul Barbarin to Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker. The theme of Black History month is “rooted in the past, shaping the future”, an ethos that epitomises jazz. The music emerged from the racial melting pot of the southern states of America

Concert pays homage to Austrian master composer and Norfolk naval hero On Saturday 2 December at 7.30pm, North Norfolk Chorale will give a concert at St Michael’s Church, Aylsham. The feature work will be Joseph Haydn’s “Nelson Mass”.

The programme opens with Haydn’s stirring motet ‘Insanae et Vanae Curae’, and will be rounded out by selected instrumental works. Haydn composed the work that today we call the ‘Nelson Mass’ in 1798, in circumstances that still seem familiar – uncertainty in Europe. But, unlike today’s merely political uncertainties around Brexit and the role of the European Union, in Haydn’s time the threat was to Austria’s very existence. This was the height of the Napoleonic wars, and Austria faced a real risk of invasion by the Napoleonic army. The urgent, foreboding opening chords of the new work seem to reflect the national mood, and it is hardly surprising that Haydn called his work ‘Missa in Angustiis’ – ‘Mass for Troubled Times’.

But even as the piece was premiered, Napoleon’s ambitions received a major setback when his fleet was defeated in the Battle of the Nile by the Royal 10

Navy, under Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. This put paid to the risk of an Austrian invasion, and the Norfolk-born naval commander rapidly became a cult figure in Vienna. Haydn’s new work has been popularly known as the ‘Nelson Mass’ ever since. The Chorale’s striking publicity for the concert will reflect this naval theme. Jonathan Dodd, the Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale, said “singing in Aylsham is a new departure for the North Norfolk Chorale and we encourage people to come and hear the choir and our very talented orchestra. The ‘Nelson Mass’ is one of Haydn’s greatest individual compositions, and we are looking forward to giving an authentic performance, with forces very similar to those which the composer originally had at his disposal”. Tickets can be purchased (including early booking discount) at £13 each online at north-norfolk-chorale.co.uk, or by calling 01692 405591. Online bookings will attract a small booking fee. Tickets may also be purchased on the door at the full price of £15.

Keeping Abreast: Portrait Exhibition The charity Keeping Abreast is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with an exhibition of portraits called ‘Femininity Comes from Within’.

Fifty portraits of women who have had breast cancer surgery and reconstruction will be exhibited in the Music Room of The Assembly House, Theatre Street Norwich, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Charity, from Sunday 29 October to Tuesday 31 October. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Keeping Abreast Portrait Exhibition, ‘Femininity Comes from Within’ by photographer, Julia Holland, has previously been on a National Tour during 2015, including a week-long showing at the House of Commons. ‘Femininity Comes from Within’ brings together portraits of women aged between 30 and 70, some of whom have been photographed before reconstructive breast surgery and some after. The participants have either had breast cancer or preventative mastectomies.

Alongside each portrait are the women’s own words about their experiences and feelings, demonstrating the femininity, strength and courage in adversity in each individual case. The stories are a powerful reflection on the women’s journeys through cancer and reconstruction. Many of their accounts convey the heartfelt gratitude they feel towards Keeping Abreast for the support they have received.

Further information on Keeping Abreast is available at www.keepingabreast.org.uk

Easy access walks this Autumn

The Norfolk Coast Partnership has produced a range of fourteen information sheets on accessible walks in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The walk information has been developed in order to give everyone the confidence to get out and enjoy this special place. All the routes are short (½ to 1 ½ miles), start and finish near car parks with accessible toilets, offer frequent seating opportunities and are well waymarked.

They also offer the opportunity for everyone to discover special parts of the area. The information sheet also contains photos of things to look out for, the waymarkers to follow and the terrain of the route in order that you can judge for yourself if it is suitable for you.

Suitable for everyone from wheelchair users to families with pushchairs and the elderly.

To find a route for you, visit norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk and search ‘Easy access walks’.

North Norfolk District Council to sponsor two Moongazer Hares and, if successful, agree the terms of sponsorship as part of the GoGoHares charity project and acquisition, artwork and location.”

Two Moongazer Hares will bring extra visitors to North Norfolk.

North Norfolk will play host to two of the Moongazer Hares planned for a countywide trail next year in aid of the charity Break. The decision to support the charity was made at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s cabinet.

Break is 50 in 2018. Following the successful GoGoGorillas in 2013 and GoGoDragons in 2015, the charity has devised a new sculpture trail for 2018.

In addition to a Norwich trail of Hare sculptures called GoGoHares, Break is for the first time establishing a countywide ‘Moongazer Trail’. Sponsors are being sought for the event, which will start on 24 June 2018 and run until 8 September 2018.

NNDC have agreed to sponsor two Hares and set aside £15,000 to cover the project.

The Council’s Economic Growth Team will also help promote the initiative in order to encourage local businesses to sponsor further Moongazer Hares across the District.

It is believed the most suitable locations for the NNDC Moongazer Hares are likely to be Holt Country Park and Bacton Woods.

Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, said “The advantages are multiple – generating funds for a charity which has long and historic links with North Norfolk, attracting large numbers of visitors to the locations where the hares are sited and benefitting local businesses. We will now apply to sponsor the two Moongazer Hares as a Council

The four grants together total £36,829.95. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Panel, said “The Big Society Fund continues to create opportunities for a wide range of communities across the district to improve the

Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said “This is an incredibly exciting project for the whole county from a cultural point of view, appealing to families and people of all ages. We would love to see a hotspot of several hares created in North Norfolk, with ‘our’ two being just part of a greater number in the district.”

The trails will start on 24 June 2018 and run until 8 September 2018 and there will be an app for each trail and a map available to download. There will be a reward for completing the entire trail – each plinth will have a 4-digit code to collect.

All of the city trail hares will have their ears pointing upwards, whereas all of the county trail hares will be looking up to the sky – or gazing up at the moon – with their ears flat against their backs. facilities at the heart of their villages and towns. We’re delighted at this latest round of grants and encourage other groups to consider if they would be able to put an application in to benefit their community. The team which handles applications is very adept at giving pre-application advice and guidance.”

Since the Big Society Fund started in 2012, North Norfolk District Council has awarded more than £1,496,825 to 196 community projects. Applications to go to the 4 December panel will need to be completed by 6 November.

Falling Branches

These are sensible, practical questions to ask. I am not for a moment suggesting that we are all in imminent danger of annihilation by hordes of thoughtless trees bent on our destruction.

By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

Our green and pleasant land is adorned with trees.

They shelter us from the heat of the sun, they shelter us from the rain. We gaze at their beauty and wonder at the diversity of creatures which they support.

As Martin Luther rightly said; “For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.”

We do, at least we should, know how valuable our trees are to all of us and to all life around us.

Yet, amongst this cavalcade of praise, must be inserted a word of caution and warning. We live on a tempestuous planet. A planet liable to storms, winds and weather which we, with all our technology, can neither predict nor control.

01692 405301

I simply suggest that for your peace of mind, you simply consider what is growing in the garden and ask yourself a simple question.

Even a small branch can cause significant damage to a home, a car or to you!

A large branch or a falling tree can be catastrophic or potentially fatal.

We need to think seriously about the trees we have in our gardens and open spaces and consider their position, their size, their species and their exposure.

Trees and wind are sometimes unhappy bedfellows. Despite their benevolence, trees have not evolved to live in concert with human D EN MM O C RE

beings, or to have compassion for our property, our health or our lives. The wind blows, the branches fall, and we suffer.

Stand in your garden today, do it right now when you finish reading, look at the height of your garden trees. Where will they strike if they fall?

What will happen if that overhanging branch should break away?

“Am I confident that the trees in my garden have no potential to cause damage or harm?”

If the answer is no, then, for a small fee, a qualified tree surveyor such as ourselves, can visit, have a look and make any recommendations for work that are deemed necessary. We are not out to “rip people off” and if we genuinely feel that there is no work required, then that will be our response. Our aim is to help you to enjoy your outside space, without worry, fear or anxiety about the “what if” scenarios.

Befriending with North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service

Spending time with Daphne Medcraft and Richard Fry together feels like you’re in the presence of lifelong friends – all the more amazing to think that they didn’t know each other four months ago!

Daphne was introduced to Richard following his application to become a volunteer befriender with Voluntary Norfolk’s ‘North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service’. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.

Daphne was referred to the service following recommendation from her community physiotherapist to have support to go out for short walks to aid healing of a leg condition. She doesn’t live too far from the beach at Bacton and used to enjoy taking walks along the water’s edge but she explained that it’s quite a busy road and she felt she needed support to do able to this, as she lives alone.

Following their introduction, Daphne joyfully reports that they have become “great pals” and that Richard is “lovely”. He visits on a weekly basis and they have thoroughly enjoying each other’s company and have do various things such go out on short trips out, Richard has taken Daphne out for lunch but has also cooked for himself. They are even planning a trip to Southwold!

During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics, Richard describes his visits as giving him a “different dimension to my working week and it’s nice to give something back”. They both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership and that it shouldn’t just be one sided.

Voluntary Norfolk coordinator who introduced Richard to Daphne and supports the arrangement, ‘Daphne and Richard are a great example of how a befriending volunteer not only enhances the life of the person they’ve visiting, but can make a big difference to their own life too! Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation - for both the volunteer and the person they visit’.

Voluntary Norfolk is keen to hear from anyone who would like to become a Health Volunteer.

If you are 18 years old or over, enjoy meeting and spending time with other people, and can put aside an hour or so a week to change a life and make a new friend, please contact Natalie Hickman on 01263 519454 or natalie.hickman@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk .

Daphne is in no doubt as to the difference Richard’s visits have made in her life, “he’s lovely – I don’t know what I’d do without him. And even when he’s not here, it’s a great comfort to think about what we’ve said and done, and to know that he’s not far away and he cares about me. It makes me feel Although the weather forecast was for rain, I'm glad to say we managed a lot less lonely even to complete the clean up of the Bluebell Pond and its surrounding when I’m on my area during the morning of 1 October without a drop of rain in sight own”. Once again great care was taken to ensure the fish, frogs, newts and other types of wild life were protected whilst the work was being ‘Volunteering is carried out. always a two-way

I would like to thank the following volunteers who were on parade, for a good job well done - George Blackburn, Chris Hicks, Eric Seward, Andrew Brown, Steve Haynes, Steven Earl, Rachael Haynes, Tom Donoghue and Tony Thirtle.

Of course, this work would not be possible without help from Mr & Mrs Cliff & Chris Cushion, Mike Kirby and Adam, who are great supporters of Bluebell Pond and always make sure we have a skip available to remove the rubbish.

Finally, many thanks to the Town Council who assist us with funding and Granville Yaxley who keeps the grass in good order. Roy Haynes, Chairman

Scam alert over rogue traders claiming to be ‘working with the council’ North Norfolk District Council warns residents not to be taken in by cowboy traders asking to check their roofs

Householders are being advised to beware of rogue traders who are offering roof insulation checks and claiming it is all part of a free government scheme.

North Norfolk District Council has been contacted by residents checking the validity of claims made by these doorstep canvassers. One elderly gentleman reported that he had been told it was a free government incentive being rolled out by local councils.

However, neither North Norfolk District Council nor Norfolk County Council have any ties to these tradesmen and are not involved with any such schemes. The callers try to make an appointment to climb on to the roof in order to check the health of tiles and insulation. But this is a well-known scam by rogue traders who target vulnerable residents and then try to con them out of

18

large sums of money for unnecessary work. Sometimes, these workmen will deliberately cause damage on the roof when they inspect it, and then pressure the householder to pay for it to be repaired.

North Norfolk District Council has received reports that Mundesley is one of the places recently targeted by these traders.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “These callers are preying on vulnerable customers and are incorrectly claiming they are taking part in a council-led scheme. This is not true, and residents should not agree to any appointments with these people. Some of these cowboys can be very persuasive but it is important to check out any claims they might make. In this instance, what they are telling householders is untrue.

Brian Chatten, from Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards, said “Our advice is always to be cautious of cold calls - whether received via email, post or telephone - and we strongly recommend not carrying out any transactions based on cold-calling. Anyone with any doubts should check with Norfolk Trusted Trader. Advice is always available via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

At present we have several young cats in care that need homes with experienced cat owners, who would understand that, as they are nervous, they will need extra time to settle and adapt to their new surroundings. These cats are all very gentle, and from past experience on a personal level, once settled, will be the most loyal and loving companions. We would dearly love to see them enjoying a home environment so if you have had timid cats in the past and are looking for a new companion please consider offering a home to one or even two of them.

We also have several lovely, affectionate and very playful older kittens available. Kittens like Dwight, Demelza, Prudie, Edric, Dotty and Maya, plus Theo, now fully recovered after an operation to repair a broken femur and Bassett, who had a reaction to Stronghold which resulted in a nasty bald patch needing treatment twice a day. They are all a joy to look after and we would dearly love to see them settled too.

Plans are now being put in place for the Christmas Sale at the St Benets Hall, North Walsham on Saturday 18 November. Bren and Jenny have been busy since the last sale making lots of lovely new goods just ready in time for us to buy our Christmas presents. Andrea will also have been busy, not only making her lovely cards, but also filling her freezer with cakes, sausage rolls, etc. for customers to eat on the day or take home to eat later. Cats Protection items (including Christmas cards and calendars) will also be on sale, plus a raffle, tombola and other stalls offering lots of bargains. We hope to see our friends and fellow cat

Be careful what they eat

Surgical cases can be a little like buses, you don’t see any of a certain type for months then 3 come along at once! Last week was a little like that at the Westover surgery, we had a run of intestinal obstructions, three in four days to be precise.

Each patient presented with similar signs of vomiting, not eating and progressively becoming more lethargic. That was where the similarities ended, as is often the case with intestinal obstructions due to the way different types of object pass through the gastro intestinal tract. If we are fortunate the foreign object can be palpated in the abdomen on a clinical exam, as was the case with our patient who chewed up a dog toy. If the object is within the stomach or stuck in a part of the intestine we can not palpate then hopefully we will see it on an xray, this happened with the patient who had a piece of bone obstructing its small intestine. The third patient had a peach stone stuck, which unfortunately does not show up on an xray, however, we were able to pick it up on an ultra sound examination.

It is important to try and identify obstructions before there

Sales at the gate at High Hedges have now finished for the year and Sharon was delighted to have raised Dwight, just one of the lovely older kittens in more for the cats this care year (being a grand total of £416). We would like to thank those who supported us by either donating goods or making purchases.

This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham. is too much damage to the intestine. Fortunately all three cases were taken to surgery before there was any irreversible damage to the small intestine, which meant the objects could be removed without having to also remove a portion of the intestine. As a result all three dogs, (two spaniels and one terrier, in case you were wondering), are recovering well and gradually moving back from a special recovery diet to their normal food.

Our pets desire to eat the unusual and inedible will mean we will never stop such incidents happening, but it is well worth keeping a close eye on their habits and taking care what toys you give them. You might save them from a big operation and a few days at the vets!

The 1953 East Coast Floods by Speaker Brian Hedge

Brian’s talk and slide show began by explaining how on the night of 31 January – 1 February 1953, a deep depression centred just North East of Scotland, swung southwards, moving rapidly down the narrowing North Sea throughout the day, wind speed increasing to force 10. The strong winds pushed the water into a ridge just in advance of the high spring tide, resulting in a storm surge over 2 metres, higher than the anticipated high tide, overwhelming and breaching the coastal defences in hundreds of separate locations. Many homes were swept away or damaged beyond repair - 100,000 hectares of land were flooded and 307 people died. Brian’s slides depicted the tranquillity of Walcott before the flood as the flood progressed southwards, more slides of Canvey Island which lies below sea level. No attempt had been made to forewarn people in advance of the rising water. It has now been accepted that had the warning system been in place, numbers of dying would have been much reduced since they would hopefully have been evacuated from vulnerable areas.

The emergency services responded quickly bringing in their pumps to try and hold back the water. Several families had to wait rescue by rowing boats to ferry them from their flooded homes.

After the flood, work began almost immediately repairing breaches in the sea defences and banks

of the rivers to pre-empt the much feared reoccurrence of flooding.

As a result of this tragic weekend, new sea defences works were planned and erected on the East Coast and a Storm Tide Warnings was set up.

The next months talk is ‘Chivalry, Duty and Servitude’. Mike Sothcott

COAST ROAD | WALCOTT | NR12 0PE The gap in the dunes at Sea Palling exacerbated the flooding, lots of houses in Beach Road were destroyed - a local man tried to warn the occupants of the Lifeboat Inn they should evacuate, but nobody took any notice. Many caravans and chalets along the coast were swept away, one house survived structural damage but sand was washed in to a depth of 3ft.

There were no plans in place to deal with an emergency; it was left to individual police officers and others to respond. There were many examples of neighbours helping each other. Many houses needed much work before they were habitable again.

An aerial view of Cley clearly showed the extent of the flooding - some cottages which survived the storm had to be demolished because the foundations were washed away.

Post-pregnancy smoking study needs Norfolk volunteers The University of East Anglia (UEA) is looking for volunteers in Norfolk for a study into how best to support new mums in giving up smoking long-term.

Funded by the Medical Research Council, the study will recruit people from Norwich, King’s Lynn and Gt Yarmouth to develop the best methods to help prevent postpartum mothers from relapsing into smoking. There are currently no proven effective approaches to helping women to remain smoke-free after childbirth.

Dr Caitlin Notley from the Norwich Medical School at UEA said “Approximately a quarter of women in the UK report smoking in the 12 months before pregnancy. Over half of these women manage to quit during pregnancy. However, most women re-start smoking again after their babies are born. “This can severely affect the health of the mother and the baby. Smoking is

the leading preventable cause of death in adults, causing 80% of deaths from lung cancer and bronchitis. Babies exposed to ‘second hand smoke’ from passive smoking have higher risks of cot death and suffering from breathing problems and ear infections. “We need the help of local volunteers who are pregnant or have recently given birth, and recently given up or re-started smoking. With their help we will identify what approaches might best support women in remaining smoke-free after their babies are born.”

Recruitment for the study coincides with “Stoptober”, the month-long annual anti-smoking campaign. Anyone interested in taking part should contact pres.study@uea.ac.uk, text “PRES” with your name to 07379 495933 or call 01603 597665.

North Walsham and District Historical Society The Town Our Parent’s Knew - Speaker Brian Hedge

Brian began his talk and slide show by showing the ‘Picture Drome’ in Kings Arms Street. Built in 1912 with a sloping floor, it could seat 400 people and

ran from 1912 to 1931. It was demolished in 2008.

The Black Cat Garage was built on the site of the

‘Old Oaks’ belonging to the Withers family and was demolished in the 1930s. The dance hall next door was later used as an entertainments centre then a showroom. It is now the site of Lidl’s supermarket.

The Cross Keys Public House dates back to the 1830s - the adjoining cock fighting grounds were very popular. It later became the livestock market in 1880. Roy’s now stands on this site.

The Market Cross was built in the 16th century by Bishop Thurlby. It replaced an earlier construction, and was completely destroyed by the Great Fire of 1600. Bishop Redman rebuild it in 1602. Ownership passed to the ecclesiastical commissioners in 1830, who later sold it to the town together with the market rights. It was restored in 1856 and again in 1899 when the clock and bell were restored. The clock was fitted in 1787, having originally come from Worstead Hall. The Blue Bell Public House dates back to the 1700s and was sold by auction on 21 May 1796 with stables and a two acre garden.

North Walsham had two railway stations within a few yards of each other. The main line was first proposed by Lord Suffield in 1863 with finance from the G.E.R. The proposed line in 1874, was to run from Norwich to North Walsham and continued to Cromer in 1877. The North Walsham to Mundesley line was closed in 1964 under the Beeching cuts. The North Walsham town station was proposed as a small railway between Great Yarmouth and Stalham. After a dispute with the East Norfolk Railway lasting a year, the line was connected with the Lynn and Fakenham Railway to become the MGN. It closed in 1959, again part of the Beeching closures.

On closing Brian showed a selection of titles of his other talks together with slides. Mike Sothcott Next month’s talk is 'Miss Reeve, The Lady Who Farmed On A Battleground’.

North Walsham Table Tennis Maximum Man Matt helps Sharks beat NWSCA

NWSCA opened their Premier Division campaign as Andy Beane, Jack Morton and Tom Baldock-Yaxley hosted Shark’s Steve Patterson, Matt Hudson and Seamus Chambers. Hudson won a hard hitting contest 6-11, 11-8, 15-13, 9-11, 13-11 against Morton before winning an equally close and very fast encounter with Baldock-Yaxley 4-11, 11-8, 5-11, 13-11, 13-11. The Shark completed his maximum in four against Beane. BaldockYaxley took a brace with two wins in straight and NWSCA also won the doubles but with Patterson and Chambers both taking braces, Sharks won 7-3.

LCC Crab’s Kevin Cardy, Char Edwards and David Grimes hosted NWSCC’s Frank Weston, Phil Mole and John Chapman in the First Division with Cardy winning the opener from two down against Weston. Mole took a maximum including a 14-16, 11-3, 4-11, 11-3, 11-9 win against Grimes and the visitors also won the doubles but Grimes’ 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 16-14, 11-6 win from two down against Weston gave the hosts the last vital point they

needed as they won the match 6-4. NWSCD’s Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Philip Stone hosted Aylsham Albion’s Fletcher Dyson, Carrie Last and John Hall. Dyson forced a decider from two down against Stone, but the NWSCD captain won the fifth 11-7. Dyson was involved in another dramatic five-setter as after missing set-point chances to take a two sets lead and then failing to convert two match-points at 10-8 in the fourth, he managed to cross the finish line in the fifth with an excellent 11-9, 13-15, 11-9, 10-12, 11-5 win against Porritt. Dyson also beat Hook in three but the remaining battles were won by the hosts in straight as NWSCD won 8-2.

Their latest game was at home to Amersham when the visitors were fortunate to come away with a 21 all draw. The previous week the Vikings had a very good 36 -14 away win versus Fullerians. The depth of the squad has been tested by injuries but they have been playing some exciting rugby, averaging almost five tries a game, six of them to newcomer Jim Riley.

The Youth section have played their first competitive games of the season with both the Under 15s & Under 16s enjoying comprehensive wins over their Norwich counterparts. A week earlier the Club again hosted the Norfolk 10s competition (see picture) for under 13s to under 16s. Over five hundred players were involved with ten clubs entering teams, four sending Girls sides. In the Minis the Under 10s have progressed to the Prima Shield Finals to be held at Leicester Tigers ground later in the season.

The Vikings are away to South Woodham Ferrers this Saturday whilst on 28 October Diss, promoted at the end of last season, visit Scottow for what is sure to be a keenly contested local derby.

The Raiders are fourth in their League, latest results being a defeat at Fakenham and a home win against Great Yarmouth - Broadland.

If you are new to Fit Together, please arrive 20 mins early. For more information contact Melanie Brown on 07766 259999.

Friday 27 October – 10:30am - Swanton Hill & Common Walk – Grade 2 - Approx. 2.6

Two were beaten by Aylsham teams with Enterprise and Hathor both winning 8-1 against NWSCE and NWSCF respectively while NWSCA won a derby 8-0 against NWSCD.

NWSCE lost 7-3 to Barracudas but it was a busy week for Ben and James Lester who played a second match, both playing up in the Premier Division alongside Dennis Elliott to help NWSCB to an 8-2 win against LCC Lobsters. The second League matches for NWSCC and NWSCE ended as draws against Mundesley B and LCC Crabs respectively while NWSCF started their campaign in the

After six games of the 26 match season, the Vikings were sixth in London One North on 17 points. Chingford lead the table with maximum points (30) followed by Amersham & Chiltern and Colchester, all of whom the Vikings have already played.
