Age Concern North Norfolk hosted a DEMENTIA AWARE BREAKFAST EVENT
and were pleased to host Ministers from several local churches to a hearty and healthy breakfast at their Day Centre, 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham.
An informative talk about Dementia Friendly Communities was given by Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair of Age Concern. The breakfast was also attended by trustees and staff from the Day Centre Hub at Age Concern, along with regular customers who dropped in throughout the event. The talk, which gave tips on supporting those with dementia and their families, as well as information about diet and healthy lifestyles, was followed by much lively discussion.
The ministers were able to gain useful knowledge about their local charity, Age Concern North Norfolk, which is staffed by a small team of paid staff with a larger group of volunteers and offers a range of services including a Lunch Club. Day Centre, Befriending and Home Visits and also includes Meals on Heels for those unable to get to the centre.
Pop in for a visit Tuesday to Saturday 9am – 3pm and speak to the Manager, Angela Reith, or telephone Susan 01263 821188 about what is on offer. They will be pleased to see you!
Christmas in North Walsham
On Christmas Day at North Walsham Community Centre, a lunch is provided for those people living in North Walsham who would otherwise be on their own on that day.
It is a very happy occasion which has been going now for around 20 years, and is organised by a group of volunteers on behalf of Churches Together in North Walsham.
The Community Centre very kindly give us its use for free and other costs are covered by donations from various charitable groups and individuals in the town, so there is no charge for the meal.
Anyone wishing to contribute to a collection for local area charities is welcome to do so.
01263 734000 01692 402218 07788 582615 4
The day for guests begins about 12.30pm with a welcome drink and finishes about 3 hours later, after the Queen's Speech. If required, transport can be arranged.
Those already on our database do not need to do anything - you can expect to be contacted fairly soon. However, there may be others in the town who would like to join us this year. If so, you will be very welcome and should phone Don on 01692 404889. If he is out, please leave a message with your details including a phone number, and he will get back to you.

North East Norfolk Bird Club
'An Introduction to Birdsong' talk with Moss Taylor & Andy Clarke on 30 November 7.30pm – 9.30pm - The sound of the dawn chorus in spring is surely one of the wonders of the natural world, but birds do not only sing in spring. So, how and why do birds sing, when do they sing, and how do you learn all those different vocalisations? In a repeat of their popular double-act on seabirds, Andy Clarke will give us a brief introduction to how and why birds sing, followed by a guide from Moss Taylor on how to recognise 14 of the commonest bird songs, illustrated with recordings and photographs. As a contribution to phenology (the study of seasonal changes in animals and plants, which is becoming increasingly important due to the current period of climate change), the recording of song periods is one of two new NENBC projects starting this winter, and this project will start in December. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.
Hedgehogs and Hibernation by Hedgehog Haven
Mild weather will delay hibernation and young animals may remain active into December, while adult males will have begun to hibernate.
By contrast, females have had a strenuous time producing and rearing at least one litter, so have not had an opportunity to build up their fat reserves. If you do put food out please continue to do so until it is no longer taken.
Did you know that a hedgehog’s nest is called a hibernaculum?
THE HEAlTH VOlUNTEER SERVICE
links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions, which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community.
It is a befriending service that reduces loneliness by actively matching volunteers with people who are in need of a positive change in their life. Staff from Voluntary Norfolk will be at Sheringham library from 10am on 22 November and Tesco’s Sheringham from 10:30am on 28 November, to promote and recruit for their health volunteer service.
If you would be interested in becoming a volunteer or you would like to find out some more information, please go along and say hello to them at one of these venues. If you cannot make it to one of these dates, call 01263519454, email chloe.edwards@voluntarynorfolk. org.uk or drop in on Tuesdays at their Merchants Place office in Cromer to speak to Chloe about your interest.

In memory of those who suffered. I remember the quiet of that place. Where guns once rattled like tin cans on a wedding car. Sergeant Bently, straightened his back, gulped, and shouted “Come on me lads”; before stopping an early morning bullet and dying strangely, mud spattered, blood spatterd, where poppies now grow. Red poppies sway in the breeze. Sam's body splayed awkwardly. Rotting on Flanders muddy pasture; the clouds hide the sunlight. In Cromer, Lillian lies still, dreams dreams in the gold sun drenched corn field, planning for a lifetime.
Singing in the chapel, of golden harps and viols, a much reduced male voice choir sustain the myth that God removes the dark clouds. Red poppies still sway, mocking what is left of Sam's cold body; Lillian dreams on, - unaware. GRJ

Miss lucilla Reeve ‘The lady Who Farmed on a Battle Ground’ : Speaker Georgette Vale
Georgette began her talk as Lucilla Reeve in costume. Explaining that she was the illegitimate daughter of one of Lord Walsingham’s parlour maids, mysteriously well educated by a benefactor, thought to be a member of the Walsingham family. When living in London she paid her own way through college. She believed that she had psychic powers and was a successful dowser and wrote regularly for the Eastern Daily Press and The Farmers' Weekly. In 1938 She became an active member of the National Socialist Party.
She was employed as Lord Walsingham’s Land Agent. In 1938 eight farms owned by his estate had to be let. She found tenants for seven and decided to take the other on herself. She reared pigs, sheep, cattle, goats and ducks and planted thousands of trees. The bombshell came on 13 June 1942 - her farm was wanted for military purposes. Everybody in the Stanford Training area was given notice to quit with the promise of returning after the war. A stubborn Lucilla simply refused to move. She continued living in her house at

Bagmore Farm, Tottington, but eventually the sight of tanks churning up her fields and knocking down barns and outbuildings proved too much so she acquired three wooden ducks huts plus a tin garage and set them up just north of the Battle Area. She awaited the chance to go home. But as years passed, she felt the effects of all the physical and mental strains. This led her to accept leaving the area altogether. Having seen a vacant house in a village a few miles away with room for a family of three besides her, she knew of such a family. They had been pledged a farm equivalent to Bagmore. It had to be cheaper for the authorities to buy this house and re-house two families from the Battle Area at once. In 1950, those in power decreed it unseemly to profit from the war. Valued at prewar prices, Miss Reeve could take no more. On Armistice Day 1950, she committed suicide. She was buried in unconsecrated ground just outside Tottington church yard. Later when the fence was being replaced her grave was included within its boundary. She didn't go to war - it came to her.

‘In the Bleak Midwinter …’ The latest concert from the boys’ and men’s choir of St Nicholas, North Walsham is entitled ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’.
The Christmas concert, a staple of festive life in North Walsham, will feature well-loved carols for all to join in with, dramatic poetry readings by local recitalists and choir favourites, old and new, along with the odd surprise! The concert begins at 7pm on 16 December, with seasonal refreshments available both before the concert and during the interval. Admission is £7 for adults with under 16s free.
David Ballard, Director of Music at St Nicholas, for the last five years said “Our Christmas concert
is always a popular event it combines so many of the elements people love about Christmas, such as angelic choirboys, warming refreshments and beautiful music, with a relaxed atmosphere guaranteed to leave everyone who attends with a smile on their face. In my five years leading the choir, the Christmas concert has got bigger every year - its success tells you all you need to know about the event!"

In recent weeks, the choir has been working on a

The choir of St Nicholas is the only wholly amateur boys’ and men’s choir left in Norfolk, and its 30 strong membership has sung recently in cathedrals including Coventry, St Edmundsbury and St Albans Abbey. In 2019 the choir will visit Leicester Cathedral.
Christmas Lights Switch On
North Walsham Christmas Lights switch on is on Saturday 25 November at 6pm.
The town will be closed from around 11am, with stalls setting up ready to kick off proceedings from 2.30pm.
This year’s lights will be switched on by David Rowntree, best known as the
New Hot Rocks
Hot Rocks is owned and managed by John and Donna Lee, we have a great team of staff led by our excellent head chef, Simon Hunter Marsh.
The main theme of Hot Rocks is to provide a unique dining experience using great local products like John’s own crabs & lobsters, fabulous local steaks & fresh fish, all backed up by Simon’s deliciously inventive daily specials.
In January 2018, a girls’ choir for girls aged 7-18 will be formed independently of the boy choristers and David Ballard is keen to hear expressions of interest in this exciting new venture via the church website.
drummer for the rock band Blur.
Two's Company, Helen Bluebelle and Father Christmas have also confirmed their attendance. It is hoped there will be buskers around the town during the day as well to make for a great atmosphere.
The Christmas Lights team has set up a crowd funding page to try and help offset purchases needed including racking, ladders and a gazebo amongst other things. Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/nwxmaslights.
Since opening at the end of September, we have had excellent feedback from customers who have enjoyed the experience and the theatre, of Hot Rocks, booking is advisable and essential for a Friday or Saturday night. We aim to build on this fabulous start and make Hot Rocks the dining destination of choice in North Norfolk.
We aim to give our customers a great night out, with helpful, friendly staff providing advice on how to cook on the “Hot Rocks” and creating a relaxed, comfortable ambiance.
We are open seven days a week, from 11 am, serving a light lunch menu until 3pm without full menu available all day. Sunday lunch with a twist is becoming a favourite, we provide all the trimmings, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, tasty local eg and you cook the meat on your own Hot Rock.
We are a 40 seat cover, ideal for small or large parties. Look out for the pre-theatre menu if you are planning a visit to the Cromer Pier Christmas show, or if you are planning a works Christmas outing, we have a special Christmas party menu available for pre-booking.

Panto returns to North Walsham at the Pop Up People’s Theatre with Jack and the Beanstalk
Christmas pantomime returns to North Walsham this December with a fresh retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk from 21st until 24th December with evening and matinee shows and all tickets priced at £7.
The pantomime will be presented at North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre, which launched in October with a successful Halloween season of plays, ghost walks and cabaret. The Pop Up Theatre and pantomime is produced by New Stages, who present theatre and singing classes and shows in the area. The Pop Up Theatre is located down Black Swan Loke, transforming the function hall of the Black Swan into a theatre space. Jack and the Beanstalk has been written and directed by Joseph Ballard, who has penned many popular shows that have been produced in the area. Joseph will be starring in the show alongside James Turner
as dame Cecilia Spriggins and Jack respectively. Other actors fill the cast, supported by members of North Norfolk Youth Theatre and local group Dance for Fun as the chorus.
Joseph Ballard, show writer and director said “We have set up the Pop Up People’s Theatre to present top shows in the town centre – producing live theatre in the town and for the town. Christmas is a great time to experience live performance as a treat and as a family and pantomime is a great British tradition that we can be proud of. Expect the classic panto elements of comedy, song, magic and adventure all with our twist for North Walsham. I’m also excited that our shows lead right up to the big day including Christmas Eve!” Joseph has been writing, directing and performing professionally for 17 years and Jack and the Beanstalk will mark his 15th pantomime.
• FREE measuring and FREE Estimating • free local delivery!
Joseph continued “I have worked in panto in many different places across the UK but there’s nothing quite like performing panto on your home turf – no matter where you live it’s important to celebrate and support locally-made theatre.”

Garden Fences Ready for Winter By Matt Carltton of Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Willie Nelson once said;
“And after all the warmth Of the Summer and the Fall Cold November wind Cuts the deepest of them all”
He was right.
Those of you who read my previous article about trees will hopefully remember that I urged you to step out into your garden to look at your trees. This month, I would like you to do the same but to pay attention to the rest of the garden and think about how the worst of the winter weather may affect it.
Fence panels are an obvious place to start. As we enter a season of tempestuous wind, the forces acting on a fence panel can be quite dramatic. The continuous movement of panels and posts can start to cause areas where that stress becomes concentrated (for example, on fence posts at ground level) which can become fatigued and weakened. Before long, you wake to find your fence laying on your lawn and the neighbour’s
01692 405301
ND ME M CO RE
dog merrily “fertilising” your flowerbed.
Prevention is much better than cure.
Those old panels and posts which you have been meaning to “do something about” could be about to make your life more expensive and aggravating than it needs to be. New fencing is not hugely pricey and looked as saving you money and time in the long run, is well worth the investment.
Take a moment to have a look at your fencing and be honest with yourself. If it looks a little tired, don’t wait for it to fail. Be proactive, it is much more economical to do so than to put right a problem once it occurs. Give us a call and we’ll be delighted to come and assess your fence and make our recommendations.
Please bear in mind that not all companies
are equal. There are, essentially, two main “schools” of fencing contractor. There are those who will provide the cheapest (usually feather edge or shiplap) panels and cheap lowgrade posts, and who will usually provide a “tooth sucking” quote, probably written on the back of an old McDonalds receipt. Then there are others, like ourselves, who will accurately assess and measure your fence, discuss your personal requirements, and submit a rational, honest and fair estimate, using the highest quality products sourced locally from suppliers with whom we have worked for many years.
Please don’t allow yourself to be “fobbed off” with a cheap quote. Choose something which will last, season after season, year after year. Give Norfolk Landscape Gardeners a call, all our concrete work is guaranteed for 10 years, all our quotes and estimates are free, and we can even create bespoke, custom fence panels to your specification.

A Policeman’s Lot, from the Krays to the Crown : Speaker Peter Lawrence Peter opened his talk by producing a bag of memorabilia of his time in the Metropolitan Police including a whistle and two keys - the first gaining access to the old type police phone boxes, the second to AA and RAC boxes. Also a truncheon – he explained that the pocket on the right side of his uniform trousers was in two sections, one for small change, the other for the truncheon.
He explained that he had to learn the whole Vagrancy Act of 1824 by heart. This was followed by a selection of photographs of Policewomen, various patrol cars, also those of the Diplomatic Protection Group which are painted red. He pointed out that the Police Driving School at Hendon was the First Driving School in the world.
The Kray brothers lived quite close to the police station to which he was initially assigned and he had many occasion to deal with them and their activities.
All new Ambassadors and High Commissioners to the United Kingdom are formally received by the Court of St James at St James Palace, where they present their credentials - they are formally accredited from the Court, not the United Kingdom, as they are representatives of The Crown.
He also showed a photograph of the passageway leading to the former Texas Embassy when it was an independent country.
This was followed by several pictures of HM the Queen attending the Trooping of the Colour in Horse Guards Parade, which dates back to Olive Cromwell’s time.
The new ÂŁ770million US Embassy in London will open later this year on a former industrial site south of the River Thames.
The Princes Gate Siege of the Iranian Embassy was shown from the roof as well as the SAS abseiling down to the windows, gaining entry, followed by plumes of black smoke as their overzealous use of explosives set fire to the building. The rescue took only seven minutes. Twenty two persons were saved, only one terrorist survived, he is still in prison.
Christmas Market at Garden Centre Overstrand welcomes guests in droves
On Sunday 5th November Garden Centre Overstrand, supported by Sheringham based events company Ruth Elizabeth Events, hosted its first Christmas Market of the year. Over 1,300 people attended the event to enjoy the Christmas displays in the glorious autumnal sunshine. Guests were welcomed to live music, owls and birds of prey whilst being able to enjoy the gifts and food produce on sale courtesy of the local businesses exhibiting at the event.
Sam Lowe, Manager at Garden Centre Overstrand, said ‘This is the first of our Christmas Markets we are hosting this year and our next event is on Sunday 3rd December so be sure to come along and bask in the fun at your local garden centre. We also have an extra special guest dressed in red coming to the next event so be sure not to miss that’.
For more information or to book an exhibitor stand, please contact Ruth Lowe at info@ruthelizabethevents.co.uk
Finally, he showed a photograph of PC Trevor Lock and his wife. He later became an adviser to embassies on security, and undertook an extensive circuit of lectures of his experience of this siege.
The next month’s talk is ‘Chivalry, Duty and Servitude’ by Kindra Jones Mike Sothcott

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Cats come into care for many reasons but Elsa, a recent addition, together with her four young kittens, was an unusual case and continues to provide surprises.
When Stephanie was contacted by someone trying to find where she lived because she had a stray cat in her care with its kittens, she was advised she needed to take the cat to a vet, to check to see if she had been chipped or not, which would confirm whether or not she was indeed a stray. Later that day Westover Vets contacted us because the cat was not chipped and the young woman, who had brought her and her kittens in, said she could not look after them as she was homeless! Although all our pens were full, Irene, one of our fosterers, kindly agreed to take them into her home in an indoor pen until one of our other pens became available. Elsa and her kittens made good progress; damage to her right eye was checked when she went for a health check, and, as it was an old injury which was not causing any problems, no further action was taken.
Elsa was neutered, chipped and had her first vaccination, as did her four kittens, two of which have now been re-homed. However, when recently touching Elsa’s leg, Irene noticed a small lump and mentioned this to her vet when she went for her second vaccination. Her vet thought it might be an airgun pellet and suggested taking an x-ray to confirm this. Because of the old eye injury, Irene asked David, our vet at the Bridge, whether this too could also have been caused by a pellet. The decision was therefore made to take x-rays to confirm whether or not this was the case. We were horrified to discover that she had been shot three times, once in the leg, once on the shoulder and once behind her eye. The pellet in her leg was rubbing on the bone and has been removed; the one on the shoulder was not visible and is not causing her any problems. To remove the one behind her eye would cause damage to her eyesight and, although there is a slight possibility it could cause problems in the future, these would not be life threatening. As it is not causing any problems at present it
Treating Eye Problems in Your Pets
Eye problems are very commonly encountered in all the species we see at the vets and should always be seen as soon as possible.
Often they are acute injuries such as scratches from running through the under growth or allergic or infectious conjunctivitis, but sometimes our patients seem to have recurrent eye problems. In dogs, one of the most common reasons for a patient to develop repeated eye infections or sore eyes is a condition known as “dry eye”. This often shows itself as a gungy sore eye (as seen in our photo), but in the early stages the signs are more subtle.
was decided to leave the pellet in situ. Elsa is a very affectionate little cat, she does love attention and we are sure there is someone out there who would offer her the loving home she deserves.
Although we would dearly love to find who was responsible, it is hardly likely that we would be able to identify the person who perpetuated this callous act in view of Elsa’s previous history and the manner in which she came into care. Under the Animal Welfare Act the courts can impose a fine of up to £20,000 or even send a person to prison for acts of animal cruelty.
Elsa, a lovely little cat who really deserves a loving new home

Dry eye in dogs results from auto-immune destruction of the tear glands. Natural tear production is reduced, leading to painful eye conditions such as development of ulcers, recurrent infections and loss of vision. Failure to diagnose early and treat lifelong will allow degenerative changes to become established. Permanent blindness may ensue in cases where treatment with daily eye drops are not used.
Early signs of dry eye are not always clinically apparent. However, dry eye can be diagnosed using a Schirmer Tear Test - a test which can be done quickly and easily in a routine appointment. Dry eye is most common in middle aged and older dogs, and some dog breeds such as West Highland White Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, Pekingese, Bulldog, Pug and Lhasa Apso, but can appear from birth. We recently diagnosed the condition in a six week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. Cases in such young animals are rare, but prompt diagnosis is paramount and the little puppy in question has responded to treatment fantastically and has comfortable eyes and a normal quality of life. If your pet has ongoing eye problems or more than two cases of conjunctivitis in the last year it would be sensible to get them checked out. The test is simple and the treatment always better started sooner rather than later. Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Veterinary Centre

Popular Cromer business set to celebrate 10 years in the town The Old Rock Shop Bistro is open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, with food served all day.
A popular Cromer business is set to celebrate its 10th year in the town. The Old Rock Shop Bistro, on Hamilton Road, was taken over by Sam Grout in November 2007.
For more information visit www.theoldrockshopbistro.co.uk or call 01263 511926.
Open seven days a week the Bistro is run by Sam and his sister Rachel Grout. Sam, 31, said: “I started working in the café that was previously on this site back in 2003 and when the business came up for sale I took it over in 2007.
“We renamed the business to reflect the heritage of the building. If you know Cromer well, you may remember it as J&M's Rock Shop, a tourist favourite that traded on the site for over 20 years.”
Serving an array of breakfasts, lunches, cakes and pastries, the team also offer a reliable and trusted catering service in homes, community venues and businesses across the region. Over the past decade, Sam and his team have made plenty of changes to the town-centre bistro, and proudly source meat, fish and other ingredients from local suppliers in the town.
To mark 10 years in Cromer the Bistro will be offering free coffee refills throughout November and are inviting customers to share their big birthday cake on November 2.

The cutting of the ribbon, by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb at the end of October, formally opened the Forget Me Not Group, based in Lessingham Methodist Chapel.
The Forget Me Not Group is for people living with dementia and their carers and was originally the vision of the Lessingham Church Council, strongly supported by their Minister. It is the culmination of five years’ hard work.
The formalities took place at lunchtime, during a normal meeting for members and their carers. This meeting was made special, not only by the attendance of Norman Lamb MP and many guest supporters of the group and its ethos, but also by the lovely buffet provided free by Mark Rushden of the Flying Cockerel in North Walsham.
The normal format of the meeting is to welcome every member and their carer to tea or coffee on their arrival. The volunteers rally round and lead activities with the members such as dominoes, cards, shove ha’penny, knitting, colouring, puzzles as well as sharing books and memories combined with lots of chatting and laughter. The carers can either join in or, if they wish, they have the opportunity to chat with each other or with one of the experienced volunteers who can lend a caring ear or a shoulder for support.
Lunch, usually prepared by our volunteer, Chris, follows, at which everyone sits together, sharing chat and jokes – laughter is such an important therapy and release valve and the Group certainly encourages this.
During the meeting, the Group is delighted to have the support of trained Massage Therapist, Charlotte Marsters, who will give relaxing hand, arm and
neck massage, again with a tender, listening ear.
After lunch, there will be a Group activity – most popular is the horse race, where each member ‘owns’ one of the racehorses. The moves are governed by the throw of a dice and there is lots of cheering. Following this will be a singalong of popular tunes. Once again, the Group is lucky to have the support of musician, Beverley Downes, who skilfully manages to get everybody singing the same song at the same time! There will also be some armchair aerobics or a ball game, which is another opportunity for fun and some gentle physical activity.
The main aim of the Group is to provide support for not only the members but also, importantly, to allow the carers some free time to unwind and enjoy themselves, knowing and seeing that the member is in the same safe and happy environment.
There is a small charge for each session and it is very important that we arrange for new members and their carers to meet a couple of the volunteers before arriving at the first meeting so that they already have a face they recognise to look for when they first arrive.
Volunteer Anita Miles, who is passionate about positively helping those living with dementia, said “The Club gives a great opportunity for carers to mingle with each other and share experiences.”
Volunteer, Trevor Fiddy added “Life has been good to me so it’s great to give something back; it’s so good to see those with Dementia enjoying all the activities as well as helping the Carers to relax.” Before cutting the ribbon, Norman said “every community throughout the country needs a facility like this.”

The Forget Me Not Club first opened on Thursday 15 June 2017, after many months of planning, research and the extensive training of its more than a dozen volunteers drawn from the villages around.
The Club is open on the third Thursday every month. They still have a few places for members and their carers and further information can be obtained from Lay Pastor Ros Peedle on 01692 405591 or ros.peedle@live.co.uk.
MP Norman Lamb said “I have great admiration for Ros and her team. They have done a great job in establishing this. It can be a lifeline for carers to meet up with others and to get a short break from their caring responsibilities. A bit of human contact, a sing song and a chat can go a long way.”

Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Scheme Funding Boost
A multi-million pound sandscaping project to help protect the coastline from Bacton to Walcott has benefited from a further £500,000 funding from the Norfolk Business Rates Pool. The announcement of the £500,000 from the 2017/18 Business Rates Pool is on top of £500,000 from NNDC; £500,000 from the local level by the Regional Flood and Coast Defence Committee (Eastern); and £120,000 from the National Natural Flood Management Fund. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “The aim of the Business Rates Pool is to fund Norfolk projects with strategic impact. There was a lot of competition and for North Norfolk to secure £500,000 is fantastic news.
“There were 34 applications received from right across Norfolk, at a total value of £6.2m, significantly more than the funding available. The fund is split between three key categories – early development, technical detail and strategic impact with some applications spanning more than one category, that’s why it is such a good news story that NNDC has been successful in securing £500,000 for this project.” A further bid for £1 million pounds will be made to the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership in the coming weeks, following the approval of the LEP’s growth strategy.
The innovative project would use natural processes to reduce coastal flood and erosion risk. It would involve ‘sandscaping’ the shoreline, in front of the terminal and down the coast; effectively using high volumes of sand to protect the coast. The volume of sand is approximately equal to 200 Carrow Road football pitches covered 1 metre deep in sand, or 1.5 million cubic metres. This would be the first time a project of this scale has been delivered in the UK. It is estimated that the total cost of the scheme will be £17 million to £19 million pounds, which includes £4.8m - £7m to fund the village element of the scheme.

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors announce first 'Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme' taking place throughout November 2017
As we continue with our campaign to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and the importance of having the correct legal documents in place, we are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout November. In addition to this discount, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors will also make a £40.00 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our selected charities are: • The Benjamin Foundation • Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind • North Walsham Dementia Support Group • Sheringham little Theatre
‘‘I am delighted to be launching our first 'Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme' this November which is traditionally 'support a charity month'. We have a great relationship with all of our chosen charities and this scheme will mean that the monies raised will help them continue with the great work they do across Norfolk'’ said Andrea Smith,
Marketing executive.
If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them yourself. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you become unable to make decisions for yourself, and it enables people you choose to have access to your finances to make payments on your behalf.
Lin Whitehead, Head of the Wills, Trusts and Probate team at Clapham & Collinge said ‘‘Ensuring you have the right correct legal documents in place and forward planning can protect yourself and your loved ones. I always advise my clients to plan ahead for later life and have those important conversations with their family and friends while they can'’.
The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, will depend on whether Lin Whitehead you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered. If you instruct us through this scheme and you would also like to make a Will, we will offer Wills at our usual fee but will also make an additional ÂŁ40 donation to the 4 Norfolk based charities. All appointments must take place by Friday 1st December 2017.
To claim your discount and book your November appointment, please contact the North Norfolk team today. Contact our North Walsham branch by calling 01692 660230 or our Sheringham branch on 01263 823398.

North Walsham Table Tennis Maximums for Mole and Binns as NWSCC win derby A derby in the First Division saw NWSCD’s Phil Stone, Richard Porritt and Stuart Hook take on NWSCC’s Phil Mole, David Binns and John Chapman. Inspired play from Mole saw him beat both Stone and Porritt in four, while Binns won both his opening two singles in straight including a 12-10, 11-5, 12-10 defeat of Porritt. With each of the NWSCD trio picking up a single against Chapman, Mole completed his maximum in five tight sets against Hook. An incredible last vital singles saw Stone nearly make a comeback from two sets and match-points down, but Binns sealed both his maximum and the match for NWSCC with a 16-14, 11-9, 16-18, 9-11, 11-9 win. Porritt and Stone won the doubles in straight against Mole and Chapman but NWSCC won the match 6-4. Gresham’s School B’s Colin Humphries, Kieran Peters and Stefan Iwanczyle hosted the same NWSCD trio the following week. Humphries won the opener in straight against Stone and Iwanczyle beat Hook in four but with four set wins for both Porritt and Stone against Peters, the match was locked at 2-2 before three crucial five-setters followed with Hook beating Humphries but losing out to Peters. Iwanczyle saved two match-points at 8-10 in the fourth against Porritt and went on to win that set 17-15
and the decider 11-5. Stone beat Iwanczyle in straight but Humphries beat Porritt in four and won the doubles in straight with Peters against Stone and Hook to seal Gresham’s 6-4 win. Also in the Division, NWSCE beat Aylsham Albion 6-4 and despite being a man down, Ben and James Lester won the doubles to also force a draw against Aylsham Conqueror. NWSCC were another team who drew with Conqueror with Binns taking a maximum and Mole a brace but losing out against Robert Ollman.
In the Premier Division, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Westgate and Werner Zivna hosted Aylsham Hathor’s Peter Ward and Ray and Jonny Gale. Ward’s defence got past Zivna in five and the League President also beat Westgate 14-12, 13-11, 5-11, 10-12, 11-9. A few service issues cost Werner dearly in the last two sets of a close contest as Jonny Gale came through 8-11, 11-6, 5-11, 12-10, 14-12. Westgate beat Jonny and Ray in four and five respectively, Zivna beat Ray in straight and the NWSCB duo won the doubles 13-11 in the third against the Gales and with Elliott taking a maximum with a trio of wins in four, NWSCB won 7-3 and followed that up with a 6-4 win away to Aylsham Enterprise. Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Jordy Gabriel and Haken Bennell hosted
With a third of the fixtures played, the Vikings went into their 11 November fixture with Old Haberdashers placed sixth in London One North. This followed a 53 -19 home win versus Diss and defeat at second placed Brentwood 27- 10. The Diss game was full of exciting rugby; 31 - 3 down at half time the visitors pulled back to 31 -19 but the Vikings' superior fitness and guile came to the fore in the final quarter. Brentwood was always going to be tough: with a quarter of the game left they were just 13 -10 behind but playing down a considerable slope the hosts scored two further tries.

Edna Stone took a maximum for NWSCF away at LCC Starfish in the Second Division as she beat Neil Edwards, Stan Munn and Chris Taylor in three, four and five sets respectively. Each Starfish picked up two wins in straight and a four set doubles win for Edwards and Taylor against Sarah Tudhope and John Harris completed a 7-3 win for the hosts. Tudhope and Paul Light both took braces and teamed up for a vital doubles win as NWSCF drew with LCC Dolphins.
The Youth teams (contact kmhooker9@gmail.com), have a full programme ahead of them including fixtures with Bury St Edmunds, Watton, Lakenham and Southwold. Meanwhile the Minis (www.facebook.com/Walshamminis) will be participating in the Diss Festival and the Land Rover Cup for under 12s and under 11s. The Under 10s have already progressed to the Prima Shield Finals to be held at Leicester Tigers' ground later in the season. After the success of the Year 7 Day plans for a weekly after School Club for Years 7 and 8 on Thursdays at Scottow starting on 16 November are being finalised. Without a fixture this weekend, the Vikings visit Letchworth on 25 November, then play Old Priorians at Scottow on 2 December, kick off 3pm.
After defeat to their Diss counterparts and a victory against Swaffham the Raiders are second in their League.
North Walsham Fit Together Walks
NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Howard Lupton and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. Dominant play saw Lupton beat Bennell in four with the Gresham’s player taking a brace by beating Beane in four and Baldock-Yaxley from two down. NWSCA found the hosts too strong on this occasion – Thaxter took a maximum with a trio of wins in four, Gabriel dropped just the one set against Beane and the duo beat Beane and Baldock-Yaxley in straight to conclude a 9-1 win that left NWSCA sitting in the very unfamiliar territory of the relegation zone – it is of course, very early days and the following week the team were back on track with a 7-3 win against Lobsters despite the match being interrupted by a picture falling off the wall!
