North Walsham represented at Norfolk & Suffolk Tourism Awards 2018

Nothing is too much trouble for B&B host Jenny Harmer as she welcomes guests to Chimneys Bed & Breakfast on Cromer Road in North Walsham.

Chimneys was established 15 years ago and Jenny takes great pride in the service she and her family offer their guests.

And now her efforts have been recognised as Chimneys has become a finalist in the Norfolk & Suffolk Tourism Awards 2018 Best B&B category.

There are just three finalists in the category, which is new for this year and is aimed at owner run bed and breakfasts, and the winner will be announced in February at a dinner awards ceremony at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral. The two other finalists are Hoveton Hall Estate and Ixworth House.

We wish Jenny and Chimneys all the very best as they fly the flag for North Walsham!

Mobile Phone Signal Boost for North Walsham

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed news of a big improvement to mobile phone reception in North Walsham.

The MP has recently been informed that a new communications mast is being built at the town’s Anglia Water Marshgate sewage works, and is forecast to become operational by the end of the year. It will be used by mobile phone operators 02 and Vodafone.

Norman Lamb said “This is a major boost for the town’s residents and for those who need mobile phones for their work and businesses. I also thank residents for their support in the long campaign that helped to bring this about.”

A large part of the town should benefit from improved mobile phone signal. In particular, a swathe of the town from Marshgate to Spa Common and the Brick Kiln Estate which has had poor mobile phone signal should see a significant improvement.

It follows a long campaign by residents, supported by Norman Lamb and local Councillors led by Eric Seward, for better mobile phone reception in North Walsham. Earlier this year a planning application for a new communications mast at the town’s sewage works was made. It received widespread public support and planning permission was given by North Norfolk District Council in June.

Brownies Shop to Fill their Shoe Boxes

4th North Walsham Brownies recently went to Roys store in town to shop for items to put in the shoe boxes which they send to children less fortunate than themselves.

They have done this for many years and the Brownies are always delighted by the treasures they can find in Roys. Thank you to customers and staff in Roys for their patience and good humour.

North Walsham has one Rainbow unit girls 5-7yrs, four Brownie Units girls 7-10yrs and two Guide units girls 10+. Any girls that are interested in finding out more about Girlguiding should go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-parents

Shiver Me Timbers!

You would have been forgiven if you thought that you had walked onto the set of Pirates of the Caribbean in Millfield’s Reception Class last term. As the only sight that greeted you were authentic and scary looking pirates and that was just the teachers!

The children enjoyed dressing up and played the part well. The phase had been learning about the life of pirates and it was decided to enjoy a day of activities which included making a treasure chest, going on a treasure hunt around the playground and trying to find the 33 ‘parrots’ which had escaped, making vibrant parrot pictures using finger painting and feathers and making pirate themed cakes.

01263 734000 01692 402218 07788 582615 4

The day was a thorough success and many of the children wished they could be a pirate every day because they had so much fun!

Thanks

Barbara Cooper would like to say an enormous thank you to Vicky, the two gentlemen by Angel Court, Rachael and the ambulance crew, for their help and assistance, when I fell in Market Street on 7 November - the verdict a fractured humerus and no I am not laughing! Thank you again, Barbara Cooper

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust Fishing's in the family for new officer Tom Angling on a unique Norfolk attraction is in the blood of Tom Webster, new fisheries officer for the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust. Tom was taught to fish in the canal as a boy by his dad Roy Webster who, in turn, also cast his first line in the waterway, near his Dilham birthplace. And now Tom is teaching his nine-year-old daughter Elsie how to fish in Norfolk's only sailing canal with locks, with encouragement from her granddad Roy, 84. He has recently stepped down after 55 years as fishing correspondent with the Eastern Daily Press.

Elsie is already hooked after landing a number of healthy-sized perch on her first fishing trip to Ebridge Mill pond on the canal.

Tom, 44, hopes other young people will also give

angling a try, to experience the pleasure of being outdoors, surrounded by peace and wildlife, with the prospect of catching, holding and releasing some of the varied fish in the 19th-century canal. One of his ideas is to start a fishing competition like those he enjoyed in his childhood. He has also drafted a list of rules for the restored stretch between Ebridge and Swafield Bridge which is in the ownership of The Old Canal Company. They are aimed at maintaining harmony between all canal users, protecting the environment and the fish. Pike weighing up to 20lb have been caught in the stretch, together with perch, rudd, roach and small eels.

Their abundance astonishes Tom who remembers how overgrown and neglected the canal had

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust All aboard for canal boat trips

Weekend and Boxing Day boat trips are under way on Norfolk's only sailing canal with locks.

From Sunday 26 November at 2pm, passengers will be able to take an hour's gentle cruise along a restored stretch of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal, enjoying a glass of alcohol-free mulled wine en route.

The trips, on Saturdays and/or Sundays, plus Boxing Day (subject to wind, rain or ice), will run between the millpond at Ebridge and Bacton Wood lock, about a mile each way.

Passengers will travel on a pontoon equipped with an electric outboard motor so that it glides almost silently through the water. It has been fitted with picnic benches and a table and there will be a giant umbrella on board, in case of showers.

Graham Pressman, boating officer with organisers, the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust, said there was room on board for 10 passengers. The crew of two will talk about the canal's past, present and hoped-for future, and about wildlife on the canal which includes otters, kingfishers, little egrets, grey wagtails, water voles, marsh harriers, dragonflies, deer, and many varieties of fish.

"Passengers will be able to enjoy the short talk, have the pleasure of a boat trip and a glass of mulled wine during a really pleasant hour on the water," said Graham, who hopes the canal's many visitors will combine their walks with a cruise.

A round-trip will cost £5 per person and passengers will be able to buy a warming cup of alcohol-free mulled wine and souvenirs. Proceeds will go towards the cost of restoring the second-hand trip boat (Elsa), which the trust was given earlier this year, and for further restoration work on the canal. Elsa needs repairs to her woodwork and a hole in her hull, grit blasting and painting. Graham said the bill might run to several thousand pounds but, if

Remembrance Sunday – North Walsham

Almost 200 people gathered in the Memorial Park for the afternoon service at the WW2 war memorial in heavy showery weather, being forced at times to seek shelter under the trees in the park.

Cadets from the Air Training Corps and the Army Cadet Force provided a guard of honour and after a short service by the Vicar Revd Paul Cubitt wreaths were laid in honour of the fallen. For the first time a wreath on behalf of the Norfolk Constabulary was laid by a police cadet. The Last Post and Reveille was played by Paul Watts the trumpet player of the Salvation Army.

In spite of adverse weather, a parade was formed up by the newly appointed Company Sergeant Major Melanie Bishop of the Norfolk Army Cadet Force comprising of veterans, military cadet units together with formations of scouts, guides, beavers and others. With the local RBL Branch Standard and Royal Norfolk Regiment Association Standard leading the parade the veterans’ contingent included for the first time the Head Boy and Head Girl from the North Walsham High School. Thus representing the continuity for the future. Included in the Veterans group also for the first time were the Town Mayor Cllr Sallie Stuckey and Deputy Mayor Cllr Mary Seward. At the appointed time, the parade marched to the town’s church.

At the following ecumenical service in St Nicholas Church led by Revd Paul Cubitt, the sermon was delivered by Mr Ian Dallain Elder of New Life Church.

Twenty wreaths were laid during the service representing military formations, Churches Together and other civilian organisations.

The attendance of the public making up the congregation appeared to be similar to last year which was a recorded 500 people. Photos: Claire Smith Hawkins and Gemma Banthorpe

Norfolk residents who find reading difficult are invited to join The Norfolk Reading Pathway, a new library service project helping people become better and more confident readers.

The free reading support is one to one and delivered in local libraries by volunteer reading coaches. Learner readers work in a fun and engaging way to help boost their reading skills, building confidence and self-esteem as they progress.

The project uses the reading programme ‘Yes We Can Read’ and those taking part are asked to spare an hour a week to work through the programme with their reading coach.

Learners will also receive a certificate of achievement as well as support to access other reading or learning opportunities if they wish to do so.

The project is open to anyone in Norfolk aged 8 or above (no upper age limit!) and is taking place in libraries across the county.

If you’d like to know more about the Norfolk Reading Pathway or want to talk to us about getting involved please get in touch by email to nrp@norfolk.gov.uk or call Angela on 07825 930 654 or Christian on 07920 831358.

Lasting Powers of Attorney: one size doesn’t fit all Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

This is the third in my series of articles about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

Many potential makers of an LPA (known as ‘the Donor’) prevaricate as they feel uncomfortable trusting, even their closest, family members or friends to manage their finances, or to make decisions about their health and welfare, should the time ever come when they cannot do so for themselves.

A major advantage of having a professionally drawn up LPA is that effective protections and guidance can be included in the LPA. Badly-worded guidance, restrictions, conditions etc within a home-made LPA can cause problems when having the LPA registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), even to the extent of making the LPA invalid.

Increasingly, I am of the opinion that the intelligent and cautious use of preferences and instructions, in certain situations, not only gets across the personal wishes of the Donor, but provides clear directions and protections.

The retired Senior Judge in the Court of Protection, Denzil Lush started a lively debate when in the late summer he went on record as saying he would not put in place a LPA for himself. He said he would prefer to go for the full Court of Protection Deputyship appointment. This is where a formal application is made to the specialist Court charged with the managing of the affairs of the mentally incapable. Few practitioners would recommend this route, other than where there are very major issues which would make it better that authority from the Court is obtained for anything other than routine administration. Applying for the granting of such authority costs £400 each time plus all the professional costs incurred. There is a long wait whilst the matter grinds its way through the Court.

So how might I restrict and manage the power of my attorneys should I become mentally incapable of managing my own affairs? This is where your specialist solicitor can provide ‘value added’ service, and usually within their basic fixed-fee cost.

Examples of such preferences and instructions are as follows: I might wish to put a cap on the value of financial transactions (or a series of

transactions within a timescale) beyond a particular sum, say £5,000, carried out by a single attorney. Transactions for more than that sum could be stipulated to require all attorneys to authorise it.

You might state that your attorneys should produce accounts annually, to be circulated among them all; and if any concerns are raised then to be audited by a solicitor or an accountant; or, you might require such an audit in any event.

With an LPA for Health and Personal Welfare, you might wish to require all attorneys to be involved with life-sustaining treatment decisions, whilst allowing more routine matters to be decided by a single attorney. Here please do bear in mind that quick decisions often need to be made and having to gather all attorneys (even with modern communication systems) might be slow and so not in your best interests.

The important thing is that your LPA can be created as a bespoke document tailored to suit your special needs and wishes and therefore truly to provide peace of mind.

Cllr Judy Oliver, Cabinet Member for Assets and Commercialisation at North Norfolk District Council, said “While car park income is a crucial part of controlling council tax levels, we fully recognise the benefits of offering these two days of free parking to our town centre businesses. Every town council has been asked which two days they would prefer in order to reflect their local need and we’re pleased to have reached those agreements through that consultation.

Get ready for Christmas with our treatment combinations

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped with 23 state-of-the-art lasers and experience of helping thousands of people.

Dermal fillers have enjoyed tremendous increase in popularity. Unfortunately success has brought lots of untested products as well as untrained or poorly trained operators. Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in side effects with some studies showing as much as 25% complication rates.

Complications that we are particularly worried about are infections, direct injection into an artery which can cause catastrophic effects, Venous compression and more worryingly some cases of chronic pain. Permanent fillers are more of a problem because they do not stay confined but they can spread into the tissue planes, which may make surgery necessary if expression by needle fails.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM is medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic clinic and has been injecting safe dermal fillers for over 11 years with outstanding results.

So what are his tips for safe treatments and to minimise risk of complications.

1] Choose your practitioner wisely, what is their background. Do they have a medical qualification? Have they had any training in dermatology or surgery? How many treatments have they done and can they show you their results? This is very important because the person administering these treatments should not only be excellent at treatments, he or she should be able to manage complications should things go wrong. There is no shortage of people from different medical and even non-medical backgrounds offering these treatments. Remember you get what you pay for and cheapest is often not the best!

2] Choose your clinic wisely, do they offer a variety of treatments or do they have only one or two treatments that they can offer. Are they trying to fit you to a treatment rather than offering you most suitable treatment from a range of different available options. Do they provide information on side effects? No medical treatment is risk free. You have to know possible side effects and then make an informed choice.

3] Choose your product wisely. The most important thing is that that a reputable product with a proven safety track record is used and that an experienced cosmetic medical practitioner administers it. Recently there has been a surge of new fillers coming into the market but a lot of these have far less research. The latest treatment is not necessarily the greatest. You don’t want to be a guinea pig for an untested product. Choose that safest product and avoid permanent fillers.

Why treatment combinations? A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, muscle over activity, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover!

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

North Walsham in Bloom is very sad to hear some of the very bad comments we are receiving with regard to our work on the Post Office bed.

Due to circumstances, Brian Skinner had to stop working on these beds some three years ago and consequently the Bamboo in the bed has run completely wild. It now covers the entire site and we are having a very hard job to clear it. We are at present using an axe to get it up. This work has to be done before we can think of carrying out any sort of planting. All the bulbs are being lifted and stored ready to be returned in the spring. The other plants are

being worked around.

People coming up to our helpers and shouting abuse at them does not really help the situation. Why we ask ourselves can’t these people just hold on a bit and then comment on the finished site?

It is not nice for the helpers concerned who are working outside in all this damp and cold we are experiencing at the moment to be spoken to in this way. As I have said right from the

New Farm Aviation Heritage Group

We are holding a Christmas Fair at our museum on Buxton Road, Frettenham on 10 December from 10am until 4pm, with free admission and refreshments available.

This will be held in conjunction with our museum Open Day and Grand Raffle draw.

We are a small military museum concentrating mostly on aviation heritage in the area. We are non-profit making and open on the second Sunday in the month from April to December. We offer free admission but do sell refreshments to raise funds.

We are now starting sales of various kinds of bric-a-brac to raise funds for at least two extra portacabins, due to having such a large and growing collection.

Why not pay a visit to one of Norfolk’s newest and fastest growing attractions?

On a brighter note we are very grateful to all our supporters who stop to admire the tubs towers and beds and give us contributions towards our work. –we have spent over £3000 on plants this year and over £200 on compost. This all has to be found and we are extremely grateful for the support we receive from the local people.

We will be holding Our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on 11 DECEMBER 2017 in the NEW COUNCIL OFFICES. KINGS ARMS STREET at 2PM.

We would love to see as many people there as possible, and welcome constructive suggestions.

On Thursday 7 December we will be selling wreaths from St Nicholas Church Approach from 8.30am until 12noon.

Throughout December our wreaths will be available from Maggy’s Stall on the Norwich Road or you can phone me with your order.

Christmas Social and AGM on 13 December 6.30pm - 10:30pm - NOTE - a Wednesday Evening. Details to follow at Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Holkham for Wintering Ducks and Geese on 17th December 10am – 2pm - a morning walk for wintering geese and ducks, with the possibility of interesting raptors, open to

beginners and experienced birders alike, and the option to stay for the afternoon to watch the flights of geese at dusk. We will meet at 0900 in the area of the notice-board, hut and gates at the northern (beach) end of Lady Anne’s Drive (TF 891448). Lady Anne’s Drive is north of the A149 coast road, directly opposite the road leading up to the main gate for Holkham Hall (by the Victoria Inn, postcode NR23 1RG). There is plenty of parking here, for which the charge is £5 for up to 4 hours and £6.50 all day. From here we can either walk east (towards Wells) or, more likely, west towards Burnham Overy. We will use the hides to overlook the grazing marshes, and may also take the opportunity to check the beach and sea. The walking is easy and on the level, though one of the hides requires a climb up steep steps. A telescope is useful if you have one. Children are welcome if

accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Trevor Williams and Andy Clarke.

Felbrigg Park Mid-Week Walk on 20 December 9am – 11am - this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We would like to thank everyone who supported our Christmas Sale. It was lovely to see old friends and new at this event. Catching up with news on cats we have re-homed and meeting new prospective owners is always a pleasure, as is the opportunity to enjoy the company of our volunteers who helped at the sale. We thank them all for the time and help they give us to raise the money for the cats in care. Special mentions to Andrea for all the refreshments plus all the cakes, etc. on the cake stall and to Bren and Jenny for the wonderful craft items they make throughout the year for us to sell. At the time of writing, the money has still to be counted, so we will advise how much we have raised next time. In the week prior to the sale we were delighted to be able to help two families who were reunited with their much loved cats. In the first instance, Gerard had escaped while being taken to his new home and been missing for over 6 months. As he was black and white there had been many possible sightings of him during this time but his owner did not think she would ever see him again. We were then contacted because a cat had been seen outside the chemists near Birchwood Surgery for two or three days and the ladies in the chemists thought it was possible that he was a stray. My first visit to check to see if he was chipped was unsuccessful as he had disappeared, probably due to the heavy showers that day. Paper collars were left at the chemists and it was agreed to put one on him when next he appeared, to try and see if there was an owner out there. The next afternoon a call was received from someone visiting the chemist who had spotted the collar on the cat. Armed with the chip reader I went down to the surgery and, much to my delight, found he had been chipped. A quick visit home to check the number on the microchip database and a couple of telephone calls later resulted in Gerard being reunited with his delighted owner within the hour. The situation with regard to the other cat was completely different. We received a call from his owner advising that her cat had escaped while visiting the vets. Smokey was added to our list of lost cats but we felt confident that he would be easier to spot as he was a pedigree cat. Advice was given on publicising his loss and the offer of a trap to catch him should he be seen. Two weeks later his owner contacted us for the loan of a trap as he had been spotted in someone’s garden quite close to the vets. Within 12 hours Smokey was safely back in his home with his much relieved and delighted owner.

We just love happy endings and were delighted to be able to help in such different ways to reunite these much loved cats with their owners.

Hedgehog Haven

This is Foster. She has a broken back leg and her only hope is to have it amputated and eventually live in an enclosed area.

At the moment she doesn't weigh enough to cope with an operation so she is on painkillers and vitamin B12 injections to encourage her to eat more. Hedgehogs can manage with three legs but it is not advisable to release them back into the wild as they can develop problems with mites on their side which they can no longer scratch.

A Merry and Safe Christmas from Toll Barn Vets Give me a call on 07901 916539

!

Heath Road, North Walsham, NR28 0JB. Tel 01692 407126 Christmas is fun for all the family including our pets! However, Christmas is a busy time for our 24/7 on site emergency service with hidden festive dangers …

Christmas Cake, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. Delicious for us but in pets these can cause kidney damage. They can also contain alcohol causing signs of intoxication, low blood sugar, blood pressure and temperature. Onions and Garlic can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Mum’s sage and onion stuffing might taste great but it’s best to avoid giving pets “left overs”. Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten, signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and

changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). It is helpful to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate was eaten to help determine whether a toxic dose has been reached.

Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell and often hunt out Bones, Foil or String from bins. Bones are often brittle and splinter easily causing blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine, whilst foil and string cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine. Many foods also contain high levels of fat increasing the risk of pancreatitis.

Around the house Tinsel and Ornaments are particularly attractive. If eaten these often cause blockages within the intestines. Candles and Fairy Lights are appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns if chewed so place them out of reach of naughty paws! Christmas trees are also potentially toxic as pine needles cause irritation of the mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea

"

!

and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens can also injure themselves climbing Christmas trees so it is advisable to have a barrier to prevent access and keen supervision!

Lilies from festive bouquets can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt to prevent them licking and contact your vet. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe can also cause collapse and changes in heart rate whilst Poinsettia sap causes blistering of the mouth and stomach. We recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets! These problems are treatable if caught early enough so if you have concerns our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal number (01692 407126). Wishing you a safe and Merry Christmas from everyone at Toll Barn Vets!

9,500 mile fundraising walk Over three years ago, Alex Ellis-Roswell set out from Minnis Bay in Kent to walk round the British and Irish coastlines to pay tribute to his late father and raise money for the RNLI.

He returned to that very spot on Saturday 11 November, where his family, friends, supporters and local lifeboat crew were waiting to greet him.

During his amazing odyssey, 24 year old Alex has been chased by bulls and met Princess Anne. He has slept in church doorways, sheep sheds and bird hides, visited over 200 lifeboat stations – and raised more than £62,000 for the lifesaving charity so far. In the last month, he walked inland along the Thames to visit the four stations that lie along the famous river - Gravesend, Teddington, Chiswick and Tower.

Alex said 'I'm excited to be raising a great sum for the RNLI and its volunteers.'

He started his journey on 3 August 2014 with an aim to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

He left his job, gave notice on his flat and walked out with only what he carried on his back. Since then, he has slept in a tent that he carries with him - or relied on the kindness of strangers. He's often been put up by lifeboat crew or people who have met him along the way.

Alex has also amassed a significant following on social media, where his supporters have cheered him on through the emotional ups and downs of his journey.

His route took him clockwise around Britain and Ireland, including the Isle of Man, the Western and Northern Isles. His initial fundraising target was £10,000 - but he has gone a long way past that.

It was after the passing of his father, Sir Raymond Ellis at Christmas in 2013, that Alex set off on the journey of a lifetime. Before ill health, his father had spent much of his life dedicated to charity work and fundraising, which spurred Alex on.

‘My dad’s ultimate stubbornness against what seemed to be a never ending cycle of illness, pain, operations and setbacks will always be a very personal inspiration to me’, said Alex, who has at times suffered with knee pain during his walk.‘I started off thinking about £10,000 then £20,000 then £50,000. I suppose reaching this target shows how well supported the RNLI is by the people, places and communities I’ve walked through, especially when, for many people, money is tight.’

Alex’s target is now £95,000, which represents £10 for every mile he has walked.

Alex remains diplomatic and refuses to name a favourite station. But the crew at Falmouth helped him through a particularly rough patch. ‘The loneliness gets you down sometimes. When I first entered Cornwall, I was in a really low place. There’s a train station in Falmouth, so I decided that I was going to get to Falmouth and quit. 'I walked for 3 or 4 days, pretty much non-stop and at times overnight, to get to Falmouth, because that’s where I was going to quit. And then I got to Falmouth, and the crew there were awesome. They were nice people, and they made me a cup of tea after four days’ walking and it put me back on a high. So it really is the crew that keep me going.’ He added ‘RNLI lifeboat crew volunteers save an average of 23 lives at sea every single day. In my opinion, they are heroes.

‘They put themselves right in the thick of what is Britain’s most unforgiving environment – our sea. They receive no government funding for their work and the majority of lifeboat crew are volunteers.’ His fundraising page is www.bt.com/DonateToLifeboats.

North Walsham Table Tennis Tremendous Tussles as NWSCA edge Mundesley A

In the Premier Division, NWSCA’s Howard Lupton, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane hosted Mundesley A’s Peter Betts, Simon Halliday and Paul Price with opening wins in straight for Lupton and Baldock-Yaxley against Betts and Halliday respectively. Price then beat Beane 11-13, 15-13, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7 before a magnificent free-flowing contest saw Betts pick up a great win against Baldock-Yaxley 11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6. Lupton’s immaculate control got past Price in straight before Beane won a tactical contest against Halliday in four. Price then altered his tactics to control angles and direction as he came back from two down to beat BaldockYaxley. Beane edged Betts 14-12, 13-11, 11-8 before Lupton sealed the win for the hosts in five against Halliday. Mundesley won the doubles, but NWSCA won the match 6-4. Shark’s Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Westgate and Werner Zivna. Westgate took a maximum, recovering from 2-6 to edge Matt Hudson 13-11 in the fourth. For Shark’s Patterson and Matt Hudson both took braces - with the latter taken the distance by Zivna – and the duo combined for a vital

doubles win in five (after leading by two) against Westgate and Zivna that saw the match end as a draw. There was also a derby between the two top home teams that saw NWSCA beat NWSCB 8-2.

In the First Division, NWSCC’s David Binns, John Chapman and Phil Mole hosted Aylsham Albion’s John Hall, Carrie Last and Fletcher Dyson. Binns took a maximum dropping just the one set against Last. Great Forehands from Dyson beat Mole 11-8, 11-8, 11-5. Mole went on to beat Last and Hall in four and five respectively but a four set doubles win for Albion drew the match. On the adjoining table NWSCE’s Tom Wardle and James and Ben Lester hosted Mundesley B’s Trevor Vincent, Thomas Rooke and Silva. James Lester remains unbeaten in the division this season as he dropped just the one set to Rooke and Wardle beat Vincent in straight. Rooke took a brace including a 17-15, 14-12, 8-11, 11-8 win against Ben Lester. Silva edged out Ben 12-10 in the fourth, Vincent took a brace and the Mundesley duo combined for a four set doubles win against Wardle and Ben Lester that sealed a 6-4 win. NWSCE also drew away to Crosscourts while NWSCC beat Gresham’s School B 8-2.

Just one game for the Vikings since the last edition's deadline, a home 26 22 victory over Old Haberdashers. The game was as close as the score line suggests, with the hosts twice being behind. The Vikings (32 points) remained in sixth place ahead of their visit to Letchworth on 25th November, but with third placed Colchester playing fifth placed Amersham & Chiltern on the same day they had the opportunity to move up the table. Their game at fourth placed Eton Manor (35 points) on 9 December could be one of their season's pivotal matches. Victory for the Raiders at Beccles meant they stayed second in their League.

Against Haberdashers Club Captain James Knight (pictured) made his one hundredth Vikings' appearance, so receiving the coveted green blazer. He joins Tom Browes, Acky Downing, Chris Godwin and Will Hodgson of the current squad in achieving that landmark.
