North Walsham's Lights Switch On took place on Saturday 25 November during a cold but dry day.
The Switch On was the culmination of the Christmas Lights which the Volunteer group had been erecting since the beginning of October. Christmas Lights Chairman Colin Jeary said “preparations are taking place behind the scenes almost as soon as the lights are taken down for the following years. This year has seen added expenditure, including one off purchases like new ladders, a 40' container and tarpaulins.
An addition to this year’s lights was a snowman that was erected above Sam’s Pets. This year’s switch on was kicked off by local singer Ellie Diss, who started the proceedings at 2.30pm, followed by Manor Road School, Helen Bluebell, Invidia choir and Two’s Company, all of whom gave their time for free.
The Switch On was performed by guest Dave Rowntree, local County Councillor and drummer for Blur, accompanied by local radio presenter Rob Chandler. Continued on page 4...

Continued from front cover... Royal Inspiration at Millfield
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, are delighted to be one of the first schools in North Norfolk to participate in Prince William Award programme which is the first scheme of its kind especially designed for young children.
The programme; which is run by SkillForce, helps build character, confidence, resilience and personal skills by taking part in various interactive challenges and games every week.
It covers five themes including relationships, personal development, working, communication and environment and the children have individual, partner or team challenges to complete.

The Year 4 children have been having a fantastic time and many of the children have said it’s one of the highlights of the week for them.
Each week is completely different and the challenges are not only outdoor activities but classroom based as well and are designed to develop self-reflection and problem solving.
When asked which part of the programme he enjoyed, Jacob Harding, a Year 4 pupil, said that there wasn’t just one thing he could mention as he loved all of it - a sentiment shared by the whole year group.

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display
All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2018 for the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display.
Organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute.
“The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.
“We are fortunate to have Titanium Fireworks back again. Titanium put on the fantastic London New Year’s Eve display. This year they are looking to make more use of the seaside location, including waterborne pyrotechnics”.
The annual display attracts over 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day.
Director of Titanium Fireworks, Simon Page, said “We are incredibly proud to be firing the Cromer New Year's day firework display from Cromer Pier, and will be making full use of this unique setting. We believe our experience on the London Eye, The Forth Road Bridge, Blackpool Pier and a host of stadia roofs will help us to make this display even better by using our digital firing system which allows split second firing from multiple locations. Some of the 150 displays we fire each year are work but others unbridle our creativity and we relish the challenges and opportunities of firing from an iconic structure like Cromer Pier."
Prior to the fireworks there will be a fun run along Cromer Promenade at 3pm organized by North Norfolk Beach Runners. The one mile fun run is the perfect opportunity to work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog or a five minute dash if you’re up to it!
Starting from the pier forecourt, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm for a fee of £1.
Illuminated merchandise available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church.
Fireworks, Cromer) for updates and a list of some of the traders who will be open on the day.
The bucket collection at the 2017 display raised a fantastic £9,000, despite the postponement. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2018 display.
WŚŽƚŽ ďLJ ZŽďĞƌƚ ,ƵďďĂƌĚ
“We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond.
Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2019 display.
“Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can”, said Jim Bond.
“Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display.”
Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks.
There will be no parking available on Cromer Promenade on New Year’s Day. It is hoped that details of other parking facilities will be issued nearer the time, including the local press.
Alternatively, why not leave the car at home or park at an outlaying station and catch the train.
Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (approximately 7pm) although Tides Restaurant will be open until 4pm. Please see Cromer Town Council website www.cromer-tc. gov.uk or the event’s Facebook page (New Year's Day

A group of friends who attend the North Walsham Dementia Group at Cameo CafĂŠ on Happisburgh Road in the town have been so thankful for all the love, care and support they each receive, that they felt they would like to give something back to a wider community.
www.kellyclarkemotorservices.co.uk
“We receive so much care via the volunteers as they seek funding and grants on our behalf, so when we heard about the Shoeboxes Appeal, it seemed the ideal opportunity to bring our ideas to fruition. We have filled around 20 boxes for children in less well off countries and at the same time we all had great fin choosing gifts and then squeezing as many gifts as possible into each box!
We have also supported the Salvation Army’s appeal for Toys & Tins which are distributed to needy families in the local area, thereby supporting near to home and far away.
The Cameo motto is ‘come and meet each other’ – we feel we are touching strangers’ lives and gaining a wider understanding of the lives of those less fortunate.
If anyone wants more information about Cameo please telephone 01692 502708.
A Purrfect Christmas
Have you remembered to stock up this winter And have all the remedies to combat the flu? Planning for Christmas and rushing around Perhaps it’s easy to forget things that affect you. Yuletide is upon us – remember to buy the tree, Not forgetting the decorations and lights for all to see. Each day we remember ‘we might need that’, What’s left over we can feed to the cat. You buy far too much and that includes me. Each year we should remember that the best things are free. A memory implanted for family friends and even the puss Remember above all, to have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Dear Margaret,
Over the last four years, my husband and I have used the excellent Medicar service to take us to our hospital appointments.
The drivers have been very helpful and patient - what a good thing it is that some people make themselves available to operate a service so helpful to others, as we don’t have the confidence to drive to Norwich University Hospital ourselves now we are in our eighties.
We would like to say a big thank you to all concerned.
With our best wishes for Christmas and the New Year Wendy and Stan Osler

A Special Child
Church bells ring out in the cold, frosty air, Like a jubilant, festive revue. Christmas is just round the corner, With so many things still to do. It’s easy to forget the real reason We give thanks, many places on Earth, For this wonderful, magical time of the year, We rejoice in a special Child’s birth. Many children are no longer taught, About He who saved all of Mankind. They have presents and parties at Christmas, That’s all that they have on their minds! Many complain Christmas items Are on sale much too early each year. They talk of ‘commercialisation’, But we all need some time to prepare. Most families start shopping early, To make sure Christmas is a success. If they leave it too long, the best will have gone, And their children will not be impressed! We’ll enjoy all the anticipation, Preparing for this Christmas tide. When families and friends come together, To give thanks and praise this special Child. Frances Wraight
Friends of Mundesley Library
On behalf of The Friends of Mundesley Library, I would like to thank all who supported their event in November with the author Elly Griffiths.
The talk was fully booked a month before the event and people came from all over Norfolk.
None of them was disappointed as she was absolutely brilliant. She told us so many interesting things about her life, her family and how she first came to writing books. It was fascinating and amusing with the packed library full of laughter.
After her talk Elly answered various questions and then we all enjoyed the mince pies & coffee while many of us were able to chat to Elly who described the venue as "a beautiful and well stocked library".
Many thanks to Elly Griffiths who was fabulous. For those who missed this event we are hoping that Elly will be able to return to Mundesley Library to give another talk early next year.

Award-winning Nurse Practitioner set to tread the boards with two other family members at Sheringham Little Theatre Award-winning Nurse Practitioner Mrs Carol Manson, from the Mundesley Medical Centre, is set to make Stage Direct's latest production a family affair by joining her husband Nigel and his son Jamie on stage at Sheringham Little Theatre. Stage Direct are in the throes of rehearsals for Alan Ayckbourn's set of five short plays Confusions, which is full of the twists and dark amusing turns that Ayckbourn is famous for. Mrs Manson won an East of England award in October for her outstanding contribution to Primary Care in 2017 and was successful in being a cut above some 500 other surgeries. She joined Stage Direct about 9 years ago, but this year is delighted to star alongside other family members. The two plays that the family will perform in together are Between Mouthfuls and A Talk in the Park, performed with other cast
10
members.
Mr Manson said "I am not only very proud of Carol's professional achievements, but it's also a privilege to be able to work alongside a very talented actress on stage too. All the cast in this production work tirelessly on being the best they can be. We all have to work during the day doing what we do but somehow they all turn out week after week in the dark at this time of year to go through the rehearsals which takes a lot of dedication."
Carol Manson "I don't know what all the fuss is about. I am very pleased to be recognised for what I do, but it is what I do. I love performing on stage but doing it with your hubby can be interesting, albeit a trifle testing at times. But all in all it's great fun and a thrill to do with
very special people."
Another cast member involved has swapped roles from writer/ producer this time. Ashley Burgoyne has effortlessly drifted into acting roles in two of the plays and is rising to the challenge, albeit a very wordy one!
The production consists of five short plays - Mother Figure, Drinking Companion, Between Mouthfuls, Gosforth's Fete and A Talk in the Park. Each play deals with the eccentricities of humanity: dilemma, loneliness, fraught dining experiences, a fete that ends disastrously and finishes with five odd characters on park benches. Dark and yet deliciously humorous this will be a treat for the senses!
Under the very capable directing talents of Derek Bull, the five plays in Confusions will be performed at the Little Theatre on 19 & 20 January at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347 or online from their website at www.sheinghamlittletheatre.com

Winter Garden Makeovers By Matt Carlton of Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Everywhere you go”
Except in my garden, which is looking particularly unglamorous at the moment, as a result of a chronic lack of time.
It’s a bit of a problem isn’t it, trying to think about making a garden special during the winter months? It is tempting to spend our time contemplating the “warmer” weather to come, to close the curtains and light a fire and let the garden go to the dogs.
The reality is though, that this is a brilliant time to treat yourself to a garden makeover. Now that the weather has turned colder, the weeds have died back, and the leaves have dropped, we can really see the structure of our gardens and have a good long think about the space we would like to enjoy in the coming summer.
Now is the best time to think about structural changes to your garden. Creating new spaces like patio areas, outdoor dining spaces, open areas, pergolas, garden buildings, new lawns, flower beds. This is the ideal time to put those

ED
things in place, so that when the spring comes, new plants can be put in and by the time we arrive at the idyllic and maybe mythical “long hot days of summer”, you can put your feet up and enjoy your garden. I often ask you to step into your garden for a moments contemplation on a particular subject. This time, I would like you to wrap a scarf around your neck, pull on your warmest socks and step out into your garden and imagine the summer. Imagine the warmth of the sun on your face, the smell of the flowers, the sound of birdsong in every corner, the hum of bees amongst the flowers. Consider the crackle of a barbeque, the chink of an ice cube in a glass and above all, the sound of your own contentment as you relax in your own private Idaho, shutting out the world and all its troubles and simply being where you are.
A beautiful thought, I think you’ll agree. But we need to make that happen. That patio replacement you need to set off the hot tub you promised yourself has to be designed and built, the new flower borders to replace the overgrown ones need to be put in and arranged and the new driveway that you have always promised yourself to make the
front of your property really stand out needs to be planned and built.
That is where I’d really like you to give us a call. Norfolk Landscape Gardeners truly relishes the opportunity to make a garden really work for people, to make your space personal, practical and beautiful. From initial concept, via detailed hand-drawn designs, to completion, we really want to make your garden beautiful for the summer and right now is the ideal time to start.
Our initial consultations are free, where we will visit you to discuss your ideas in detail and work those ideas into a practical reality, so please give us a call and treat your garden to a Christmas present. Let it be all it can be.
Look after each other, Merry Christmas from all of us at Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

THE SCHOOL NATIVITY
Every school must have one, the Christmas Nativity, Poor Tom was feeling so depressed at all the activity, He wanted to be the donkey or even have 'Joseph's ' part He'd read the parts so nicely and knew them all by heart. He knew he'd be a great donkey as he had a cheeky grin And Mum and Dad in the audience would be so proud of him, He believed he'd make a good 'Joseph', walking by 'Mary's' side He could smile and beam in every scene and exude a wondrous smile. The part he got he did not want, the 'innkeeper' was he All dressed up, one word to say, he felt it, oh, so twee, The single word was two letters long, his prowess he could not show He stood there in the doorway and all he said was “No”. Rehearsals were, as always, endless, the teachers would sometimes shout, And Louise, who was 'Mary' was very soon booted out, Over and over they did their parts, his patience wearing thin Remembering always to say just “No”, 'cos there was no room in the inn. Then came that day in December when parents settled down to see The Lower School perform that year's production of 'Nativity', Everything was going fine until the innkeeper, young Tom, Said, “Yes, of course you can, come in sit down, I'll put the kettle on”. North Walsham Probus Club ‘Chivalry, Duty and Servitude’ by Kindra Jones
Kindra explained that she studied History at University, in particular Armour and 14th century knights.
She showed pictures of fictional knights, starting with the Black Nights of that era - the black colour coming from the colour of their armour, which was coated in oil and heated to prevent it rusting.
It was followed by King Arthur, bearing a sword in his right hand - the left shoulder opposite was covered by armour. She explained this was incorrect because his right shoulder was the most vulnerable, being nearest to his opponent and open to injury, not as depicted.
She had brought along several examples of armour, and displayed a small item of chain mail which was quite heavy.
“What is a knight?” - a man of noble birth. He is a servant, a horseman, the ultimate mounted warrior in armour.
Carer Rights Day at the Day Services Hub
Some of our older regular visitors and younger people from local schools shared time Age Concern North Norfolk’s Day Services Hub, where a member of the Carer Matters team, Mary Russell led a chat on both old and young carers.
As carers arrived, they were offered contact and information on services provided by ‘Carers Matter’.
In North Norfolk, many carers remain hidden and not accessing support available. ‘Carer Matters’ aim to widen the distribution of information on support available to ensure more carers can take full advantage of all the help and assistance that can is on offer.
For further details call in at 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham or telephone 01263 821188.
presents
At the age of seven a boy became a page, by 15 he became a squire. From 20 onwards he was eligible to be made a knight. As a sword bearer, he took an oath of allegiance to his master.
At the time of the Crusades, the Knights Templar was formed as monastic orders, whose members would act as soldiers protecting pilgrims.
Jousting became a favourite pastime - initially using a spear or lance, later a three pointed lance for greater effect, but less dangerous. Swords and wooden clubs, all were used to knock a contestant off his horse.
Armour in the English Civil war became lighter due to the lessoning of hand-to-hand fighting.
Heavy leather jackets boiled in wax were in use to protect the less wealthy warriors. Chain mail came into greater use. Helmets changed shape to provide greater protection but were still not protection against stabbing.
In the 14th century Plate Armour was introduced. This comprised of many overlapping steel plates attached to a heavy linen jacket, reaching perfection in the 15th century by the introduction high carbon steel, but they could weigh 40 to 60 kilograms.
Finally, as only three to five inches of a sword’s blade was pointed and sharpened, greater accuracy could be achieved by using two hands, one holding the hilt, the other halfway down the blade to guide it to the target.
The January talk is ‘The Fire Service’ by John Baker.

Winter
“We’re in your neighbourhood”
Most folk dread the onset of Winter, Those long, chilly nights and sharp frosts. The northerly winds blow straight through you, Especially those cold, biting gusts! The weather can be really awful, With rain, sleet and snow often seen. I love the all the wintery conditions, Except when it gets too extreme!

Nitrogen filled tyres give better road handling and reduced tread wear and puncture risk, as well as reduced rolling resistance to give improved MPG. Free Delivery & Collection service Viewing & Seating area with TV/Wifi Complimentary tea & coffee. Children welcome. Free wheel alignment check
I admit there’s a real anticlimax, Once celebrations are done. The first months of the year can really drag by, But at least the nights aren’t so long!
I love sitting beside my warm, glowing fire On horrible nights when it's cold. When snow covers the ground, I feel safe and sound And cocooned, as my life’s put on hold! For those who can’t see any good points, And think Winter’s too hard to enjoy, They have only to look a few weeks ahead, When Spring will bring back warmth and joy!

Santa Paws made time in his hectic schedule to deliver presents to the dogs Christmas Party hosted by Animal Magic Dog Club. The club has been busy fundraising all year, supporting local good causes and the chosen beneficiary for the party was DogLost, Norfolk & Suffolk Branch. This volunteer led organisation does an incredible job of assisting in the search and return of dogs reported lost or stolen in our region. If the worst happens and you lose your beloved pet, they are the first people to turn to for help.
Great fun was had at the party raising £500, which DogLost will use to buy specialist wildlife cameras. These cameras will enable them to remotely monitor feeding stations to see if they’re being visited by the missing dog which will assist in their capture.
The club will also be arranging for their final food delivery of the year to Norfolk Strays who we have been supporting throughout 2017. Another 18

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As we approach the end of 2017 it is time to reflect on what we have been doing to help cats and kittens in the very large area that we cover.
At the time of writing, we have had 192 cats in care, their ages ranging from newborn to 12 years old. Over 160 of these are now in new homes with a further three also reserved. Some of these have been long term residents in the cat pens and, although we were delighted to see them go, we have missed them. Cats like Harvey, our lovely FIV positive lad who needed an indoor home and Beth, a very timid cat who is now settled with Justyna, one of our volunteers, who is happy to allow her to take time to settle in her own time and on her own terms. Keifer and Kia, two lovely black cats that came in from a colony, will also have left for their new home together with lovely people who have had timid cats before and appreciate it will be several weeks before they accept their new lifestyle. It can take weeks [or even months]for this to happen but is especially rewarding when it does.
Several cats have needed treatment at the vets, mainly for dentals, although this year there have been several with eye problems, two of which have needed surgery for ingrown lashes. Nutsey, one of these, is also having treatment to resolve a allergy problem and cannot be put up for adoption until this is resolved. Theo, an active young kitten, came into care with a nasty fracture and needed weeks of cage rest with Bren, one of our volunteers.
On two occasions this year we have answered cries for help from people with too many cats. The circumstances have been different but in both instances we have been able to help. In the first instance 12 kittens came into care and we paid for the adults to be neutered. The second is ongoing with 13 already with us and 2 more to come in. In this case the owner is in hospital and the landlord had to get her consent before we could help. All are friendly cats, unusual in these situations.
As well as our special Neutering Campaign, Cats’ Protection policy is now to pay for neutering of all kittens that leave before they are old enough for the operation. It’s another good reason to give a home to one of our cats or kittens. Our Adoption Fee is very reasonable and is the same for all, irrespective of age or colour, and they will have been to the vets, treated for fleas and worms, vaccinated and chipped.
Christmas Food to Avoid
With Christmas just around the corner, we always see a huge increase in the number of toxicity cases that we see. Generally this is down to the sheer volume of chocolates and cakes that are bought and eaten through December and possibly also in part to the busy lives that we lead these days resulting in our not hiding them very well! I have included a guide below to the main culprits that we see at this time of year.
• •
• •
Things to avoid: • Christmas cake and mince pies (raisins and sultanas can cause kidney failure in dogs), Chocolate (very tasty, but very toxic!) Stuffing (onions, garlic and chives can cause red blood cell destruction), Sweets (xylitol, the artificial sweetener can be toxic at high levels) Nuts, particularly Macadamia nuts.
In fact, the best way to spoil your pets at Christmas is with extra walks, play time and affection. Even safer foods such as turkey, green vegetables or animal specific treats can cause problems if pets have too much or are not used to them.
Our case this month is also a toxicity case, but nothing to do with Christmas. The patient in question, a 5 year old black Labrador, was brought in to the surgery as she was behaving very strangely and twitching incessantly. Although the owner had no knowledge of her ingesting anything unusual, she lives on a working farm and her symptoms and neurological exam were very suggestive of a neuro toxin. North Walsham Times 533 December 16th 2017
Finally, we would like to thank everyone who helps or supports us and wish them a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Hedgehog Haven
Just when I thought there would be no more hedgehogs coming in this year, along came Kath on 3 December. At less than 300grms she would not have survived the winter months outside.
Overwintering can be very rewarding but should not be undertaken lightly. Here are a few tips about what is needed:
a constant temperature of approximately 18oC day and night a quiet environment a suitable hutch or cage someone you can contact – either a vet or a carer in case the hedgehog needs medication • keep a chart and weigh regularly • and finally remember you are dealing with a wild animal - they are messy and will need cleaning out at least once a day, preferably twice.
• • • •
On behalf of myself and the 35 hedgehogs in care, I wish you all a Happy Christmas.
Neuro toxins are substances that adversely affect the nervous system and brain and often lead to seizuring. She was immediately admitted, placed on a drip and further tests run. Shortly afterwards she vomited a huge volume of rat poison and began to seizure. Fortunately, treatment had already been instigated and over the course of the next 12 hours of intensive care she stopped fitting and gradually improved. She was able to go home later that night and returned 8 hours later like a different dog. Despite dicing with death and receiving a great deal of anti-seizure medication she trotted back into the surgery as though nothing had happened. Animals truly are inspirational and fortunately, she will be around to see a Christmas that she nearly didn’t make!

“It Brings Us All Together”: Participatory Dance Workshops Improve Wellbeing For Older People In Norfolk New creative activities to support the health of vulnerable older people in parts of Norfolk is paying dividends as research shows a marked increase in personal wellbeing as a result of taking part.
Since October, the ‘Our Day Out’ project for residents of Breckland and North Norfolk, delivered by arts and community development charity Creative Arts East, has been working with Rambert, recognised world leaders in contemporary dance, to provide dance workshops for older people, particularly those living with dementia, and the sessions have been a huge success. Funded by the Spirit of 2012 Trust, alongside contributions from Norfolk County, Breckland and North Norfolk Councils, 'Our Day Out' is a fantastic programme, engaging vulnerable older people through high quality participatory arts sessions, delivered by professional artists. The latest sessions, taking place twice a month in Attleborough, Dereham, Watton, Thetford, Wells-next-the-sea and North Walsham, are a special collaboration with international dance company Rambert, where participants enjoy gentle music and movement workshops in a safe, inclusive and dementia-friendly environment.
sessions, participants have seen one of Rambert’s most acclaimed works, Ghost Dances, at Norwich Theatre Royal, and on 13th December were taken to London for an exclusive tour of Rambert’s headquarters where they had behind-the-scenes access to the award-winning building, including the costume department, rehearsal studios and archive rooms.
Sarah, one of the workshop facilitators said “The ‘Our Day Out’ sessions are an opportunity for people to come together, move together, to socialise in a safe environment. The most important thing for me as a leader is that we feel safe enough to be as we are and accept everyone as they are. I think that the theme of Rambert’s Ghost Dances has offered a lot of scope for people to connect on some level, whether it’s enjoying the music, the types of movement or enjoying the exploration of some of those wider themes as well.”
Creative Arts East is delivering ‘Our Day Out’ until 2019. From January to March 2018 the groups will be taking part in singing sessions with Norfolk-based singing duo Mary and Kim. They will be encouraging participants to lend their voice to familiar songs from yesteryear, experience new styles, and even try their hand at song-writing. These sessions will culminate in a special ‘Big Sing’ concert, bringing all the groups together at Dereham Memorial Hall on 29 March. ‘Our Day Out’ welcomes all older people, no previous experience necessary, and Creative Arts East is keen to welcome new participants, particularly when the new sessions begin in January. If you, or someone you know would like to find out more about joining or volunteering for the project, then please get in touch with Lea Schiller at Creative Arts East on 01953 713390 or email lea@creativeartseast.co.uk for more information.
• FREE measuring and FREE Estimating • free local delivery!
Measuring the programme’s impact through a nationally-recognised wellbeing scale, Creative Arts East found that after participating in ‘Our Day Out’ 95% of people created new social connections, 93% shared positive experiences, 80% have engaged with the arts and 78% felt better about themselves. Overall 70% had shown an increase in their wellbeing as a result. One participant said “Sometimes I forget my words when I talk to people, but when I am here I don’t have to worry about that because everyone here is understanding – it’s a safe place to be.” As well as the bi-monthly participatory

Scrap in Stamp Duty Land Tax for First Time Buyers
The Government have announced in the Autumn Budget, plans to cut Stamp Duty Land Tax for first-time buyers in the hope of easing the current housing crisis. Chancellor Philip Hammond declared the plans in an effort to help first-time buyers struggling to get on the property ladder.
The change has been introduced as new data shows that Stamp Duty Land Tax alone blocks 45,000 house purchases each year. It has been welcomed by many as there are concerns that the property market is at risk of coming to a standstill, and with the increase to interest rates, this is seen as a beneficial change to the home buying process.
What is Stamp Duty Land Tax? Stamp Duty Land Tax is a tax paid on the purchase of both residential and commercial properties, if over a certain value, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You pay the tax when you: • Buy a freehold property • Buy a leasehold property • Buy a property through a shared ownership scheme • Are transferred land or property in exchange for payment, e.g. you take on a mortgage or buy a share in a house
What are the changes? • Stamp duty to be abolished immediately for first-time buyers purchasing properties worth up to £300,000 • In London and other expensive areas, the first £300,000 of the cost of a £500,000 purchase by first-time buyers will be exempt from stamp duty
As per the HMRC's guidelines, in order to count as a first-time buyer, you must not, either alone or with others, have previously acquired a major interest in a residential dwelling or an equivalent interest in land situated anywhere in the world. This includes previous acquisitions by inheritance or gift, or by a financial institution.
If the property is purchased jointly, all the purchasers must meet these conditions.
Will this measure help the housing crisis? Whilst the temporary relief period that ran from March 2010 - March 2012 shows the cut in Stamp Duty Land Tax can be successful in enticing first-time buyers, it is not the only factor affecting them today.
Rosemary Farman
First-time buyers still face the struggle of saving for the deposit needed as part of the purchase, mainly due to the ratio of property prices to incomes doubling over the last 30 years. As such, many receive a gift from parents or grandparents to aid towards the deposit and therefore allowing them to purchase their first home.
Many also now face the effect of the rise in interest rates, which are the highest they have been in five years. This will have a direct impact on mortgage rates, meaning monthly repayments are likely to be higher, and this is just another thing for potential home owners to consider when deciding whether to buy their first home.
Alongside the current changes impacting the country it remains to be seen if this will have the desired effect on the market, however any help for first-time buyers in this economy is certainly welcomed!

Official Opening - North Walsham apparatus to showcase their talents. Gymnastics Club
North Walsham Gymnastic Club have been in their new premises on Cornish Way Business Park from mid-September. Since then the number of gymnasts participating in the sport has increased from 200 to an incredible 480!
On Sunday 3 December it was officially opened by The Right Honourable Norman Lamb MP. Approximately 50 people attended the event, including the Mayor of North Walsham Sallie Stuckey, Maggie Prior North Norfolk District Councillor, committee members and the coaching team.
During the ceremony a selection of gymnasts performed various displays across the
Alexis addressed the audience and thanked all those who had helped and contributed during the last few years. The project would not have been possible without the financial contributions from Sport England £50,000, The Big Society £10,000 and Jewson’s Building Merchants £5,000. With further support from many other national and local organisations, traders and the tireless fundraising events over the years, the Dream, Believe, Achieve project has now became a reality.
Alexis said ‘I started the club way back in 2001 at North Walsham Sport Centre two evenings a week with just 15 children, now there are an astonishing 480 with more joining in the new year. It has taken 10 years of searching
for a suitable property and several years to negotiate and secure leases, contracts and complete necessary building work’. Alexis continued ‘It has been a very long project and would not have been possible without the support of so many people from the coaches to the committee members and from my family’.
The facility is a great addition to North Walsham offering classes for all ages and continues to go from strength to strength with extra sessions being offered in the New Year, as demand grows the club hope to expand further to meet the needs of the local community.
North Norfolk District Council launches its first Business Awards
Inaugural celebration of the best in the district gets under way The inaugural North Norfolk District Council Business Awards have been launched – and businesses across the district are being encouraged to put themselves forward to win one of the prestigious titles.
The awards (#NNBA18) are open to businesses of all sizes and across all sectors. The aim is to promote and celebrate the vibrant business community across North Norfolk, and to unearth some hidden gems during the process.
There are seven categories : Agricultural, Business Growth, Business Development & Innovation, Environmental, New Businesses, Tourism & Hospitality, and Young People & Skills.
Entries can be submitted until 15 January, with the shortlisted businesses invited to an awards ceremony at Gresham’s School on 15 February. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We regularly deal with some very successful and very exciting ventures, but too often these successes don’t get the recognition they deserve.
“This inaugural project will reveal some of the hidden business stories across North Norfolk, and give the district as a whole the chance to celebrate the vibrancy of our business community.”
Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Business & Economic Development, said “There is huge diversity within the business community across North Norfolk, and these awards are designed to be relevant across all sectors. Many businesses will be keen to win their individual categories, but it’s just as important for us that every organisation that enters will benefit from taking part and be able to shout about all the successes they are having.”
