Pancakes at Sainsbury's

Sports Relief is back and the colleagues from Sainsbury’s North Walsham will be getting active and raising money for the charity.

Sainsbury’s shoppers can now pick up the official Sports Relief

merchandise in store to support the charity and can win great prizes by buying a £1 scratch card in store with all proceeds going to Sports Relief.

On Shrove Tuesday Sainsbury’s colleagues had fun with pancakes when the Grocery Manager and Checkout Manager challenged notNorth to dropWalsham their pancake Thethe Rev Paul Cubitt and Keith Jarviseach withother the old first world war flags they would like to recreate (credit Batson) as they passed and tossed it around colleagues and theRichard Momentum Team of workers who have been with us for many weeks of the shop refit.

Since the changes to accommodate the new Argos store within Sainsbury's North Walsham which opened last November, many improvements have been taking place. Last month the Deli counter was renewed.

There is a chalkboard at the front of the store to keep customers up to date with progress and by the major official week of Sports Relief 17 23 March, all the work should be completed.

Trustees needed for local charity Have you been wondering about volunteering some time for a good cause, but want to use your particular gifts and skills?

Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to “give something back to your community?

Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, lunch club, Keep In Touch clubs, intergenerational activities and a Drop In/Befriending service.

If you have financial, human resources or past business expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals who are willing to commit approximately 3-4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee.

Trustees usually serve for a period of 3 years and then can stand for re-election for a further period.

You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support whether you are new to this kind of volunteering or whether you are a seasoned volunteer.

We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas, together with support for fund raising events.

We hold a trustees meeting currently once a month on a Thursday afternoon, and meet for a shared lunch beforehand at the Day Services Hub in Sheringham.

Full information on what being a trustee involves is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission If you are interested, please contact the Day Centre Manager, Angela Reith, in the first instance. Telephone: 01263 821188 Email: manager@ageconcernnn.co.uk

North Norfolk Coalition against the Cuts and Trade Council

We are a small group of people against the cuts in public services and the policies of austerity.

We believe in a properly funded public sector, essential for the health and well- being of our people. We are against the creeping privatisation of the NHS, education, social services etc. We aim to raise awareness of these issues and we campaign against local and national issues also.

Recently we protested and campaigned on local streets against the closure of Benjamin Court as an NHS hospital.

For more info ring Maureen on 01263 823093. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month. Our next meeting is on 7 March at 7.30 pm at Sheringham Community Centre. All welcome.

Paul Taylor, Coltishall Jaguars Race Director said ‘We’re looking forward to the Mad March Hare and are excited about the special guest appearance of the GoGo Hares. As a club we like to support local charities when we can and this year having the Break hares here to encourage all those ‘haring round the track’ was just too good an opportunity to be missed.’

Member of the Coltishall Jaguars Running Club and GoGoHares sponsor Radley Fenn said ‘It is great how a sculpture trail can bring together so may different elements of the community, raising the profile and valuable resources for Break, I am thrilled to be involved and can’t wait to see the race come together’.

Pancake Fun for Early Years Centre

Children at St Nicholas House School enjoyed pancake fun at the school last month. There was pancake decorating and eating as well as the more traditional races and tossing. It was all done to raise funds for the school’s new Early Years Outdoor Learning Environment which will be completed during the Easter break and will be opened by Norman Lamb on 12th May 2018.

Headmaster, Philip Oldroyd, said “There is no doubt about the critical importance of Early Years education, of supervising and nurturing the first steps”. He is backed up by the findings of a research paper published earlier this year, the results of which reveal how those taught well at Reception went on to do better in their GCSEs. In one of the biggest studies of its kind, involving more than 40,000 children in England, researchers from Durham University’s Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring, led by Professor Peter Tymms, tracked the progress of pupils from Reception

The Coming of Spring

Green shoots are pushing through the snow, soon the crocuses will show. Bright yellow, mauve and white, they will be a welcome sight. Then there will be daffodils to lift my spirits high, last year I saw a field of them against a bright blue sky. They will be growing everywhere, a waving sea of gold. Daffodils bring happiness to both the young and old. Diane Berthelot

CLASSIC IBIZA WITH MINISTRY OF SOUND AT BLICKLING SET TO SEL-OUT Don’t miss this family friendly party at Blickling Hall on Friday 10 August

Following the resounding success of Classic Ibiza at Blickling over the last 2 years, the high demand for tickets at this year’s concert indicates that it will sellout way in advance. This year’s concert promises to be bigger and better than last year, with news of the involvement of dance music pioneers Ministry of Sound. So, sign up now if you don’t want to miss The Urban Soul Orchestra, DJ Goldierocks and a host of live vocalists performing some of the biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years.

The evening starts with a chill-out set where people can enjoy their picnics and a drink, or dance along as the sun fades. Then DJ Goldierocks will turn things up in the interval, getting the crowd into the mood before the USO and vocalists return to the stage to bring a vibrant atmosphere to the summer evening. One classic dance track will follow another, as the delightful setting of Blickling turns into a magical, alfresco celebration, with accompanying lasers. Last year’s set list included some real crowd pleasers, such as Easy/Superstylin’ (Groove Armada), Sandstorm (Darude), Right Here, Right Now (Fat Boy Slim), Insomnia (Faithless) and Born Slippy (Underworld).

This year’s set list will include a number of new tracks that are sure to thrill the crowd. To add to the excitement, at Easter concertgoers will be able to suggest their favourite dance anthems to be included in the programme on social media. More details of this will follow. Due to the anticipated capacity crowd at Blickling, giant screens will be positioned around the stage to ensure that everyone can soak up the atmosphere.

In addition to the amazing artists, what really sets Classic Ibiza apart is that it is a concert for all the family. Set in the delightful outdoor setting of Blickling Hall, with easy access to transport links, concert goers can bring their own food and drink, or take advantage of numerous stalls selling high quality street food and refreshments. Car parking is free (both for coaches and cars), so whether you are six or 60 you are assured of having a fantastic evening in a safe and family friendly environment. Lisa Ward of Revival Productions commented “We carefully plan every aspect of Classic Ibiza to ensure that everyone that attends the concert is assured of having a truly unforgettable evening. We’ve worked with the fantastic Urban Soul Orchestra for a number of years and can guarantee that they will put on an amazing show and we’re shortly going to be announcing a very special guest performance this year too! My team’s job is to enhance people’s experience so that they want to come back for more. This includes selecting a beautiful venue, ensuring that people can get on and off the site easily, all the way through to making sure that everyone enjoys themselves in a safe environment and doesn’t have to queue for ages to use the toilet! Considering the amount of repeat bookings that we have received, our approach appears to be working; two of our venues for 2018 have almost sold out already! So, if you are thinking of coming to Blickling and want to bring your family and friends along too, it’s advisable to book your tickets now.”

Curtains

My head is going round and round, I’m getting in a tizz. I’m measuring for curtains - what a pain it is! Inches into centimetres, turn them back again. How many yards or metres do I need for each curtain? Should they be ready-lined or with linings separate? Should they be plain or patterned, brightly coloured or sedate? So many choices I must make, it makes me want to cry! Slats or nets for privacy? These problems multiply! I think I’ll have a cup of tea and rest my weary brain, So I’m refreshed and ready, to face it once again. After hours and hours of this, I’m really in a bind, So stuff the nets and curtains - I’m going to have a blind! Frances Wraight

A Night at the Musicals for Meningitis

“My name is Jasmine Pearce and I am in year 10 at North Walsham High School. In 2005, I was diagnosed with Pneumococcal Meningitis. This greatly affected my family and myself. It is a horrible disease that changes lives and destroys families. I was lucky enough to have a full recovery, however not many do. I hope that in the future, no one has to suffer from any form of Meningitis. The Meningitis Research Foundation’s mission is to defeat Meningitis and Septicaemia whenever they exists. On 23, 24 and 25 May, with the help of Louise Cooper, I am organising a show, ‘A Night at the Musicals’, to raise as much money as possible for the Meningitis Research Foundation. On 25 May, there will also be

In the running to celebrate RAF Centenary This year Coltishall Jaguars Running Club is holding a series of three 10K races – which will also celebrate the distinctive heritage of their Club Headquarters. The races, which take place on the perimeter track at the old RAF Coltishall Airbase in Scottow where the Jags are based, will commemorate the RAF’s centenary year with three unique medals. The medals each feature a different fighter plane representing the aircraft that last flew from the RAF Coltishall site before its closure in 2006. The first medal for the Mad March Hare race on 18 March features a Gloster Javelin and the second, awarded to all runners at the Mike Groves on 10 June depicts a Lightning. The final medal to complete the set is of course the Jaguar, to be presented to finishers at the final race, The Jolly Jaguars, on 23 September.

Runners can choose to enter an individual race or take advantage of discounted entry if signing up to the series. A race momento of a microfibre sports towel will also be awarded to those who complete all three races. Paul Taylor, Coltishall Jaguars Race Director said “We think this is an ideal opportunity for anyone looking for new running or fitness goals this year. If you take on the challenge of entering all three races with the aim to improve your performance at each, you have seven months between Race 1 and Race 3 so plenty of time to train and make progress.” The Sunday morning races are to be held at Scottow Enterprise Park, formerly RAF Coltishall Airbase

at Badersfield, and will be held under a Run Britain license allowing all runners to take full advantage of the flat and PB friendly course.

New horizons for ‘Wissie’ - to guest at Beamish this year

M&GN society favourite, Hudson Clarke 0-6-0T 1700 Wissington is to visit the world famous open air museum at Beamish in County Durham this summer - new horizons indeed for the loco which spent almost its entire working life in the a very different industrial setting, feeding BSC’s largest sugar refinery in the Fens.

Society chairman Neil Sharpe says “We are delighted to have forged links with yet another railway. The Beamish Museum Peter Mayne 1700 Wissington pictured approached us to the hire at Sheringham station on M&GN Wissington for three months Society Members’ Day, 7 October 2017 over the summer. This is the peak time for the museum and so ‘Wissie’ will be seen by the large numbers of people who visitor the highly popular attraction over these months.”

We offer a complete repair service using modern techniques to return your wheels to perfect condition.

Draft contracts were still under discussion at the time of writing but Mr Sharpe feels that “the deal is 99.9% done.”

Wissie’s stay will involve around 60 steamings which will bring in enough cash to pay for its new tyres and, as Society Engineer Keith Ashford so eloquently put it, “leave enough change for a bag of chips”. “We are grateful to volunteer Rob Gibbons for introducing us to Beamish” says Mr Sharpe, “and to Keith Ashford for negotiating the deal.”

The loco will head north directly to Beamish after the end of its current stay at the Colne Valley Railway in June. North Walsham Times 537 3rd March 2018

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station looked back at 2017 with the awards and dinner dance held at Royal Hotel Mundesley last month.

Over 100 people attended the dinner dance. After the meal the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2017 before the band ‘Don’t Ask’ took to the stage. The evening raised ÂŁ610 through the raffle and auction for the RNLI.

Holsworth, as crew and shore crew, Jim Page (Treasurer) and Tany Blackburn (Souvenir shop).

Cubitt Siely has taken over as Lifeboat Operations Manager.

Two new lifeboats arrived on station, Atlantic 85 Howard Bell in May and D Class Russell Pickering in September. Both were named on station on 7 October 2017.

Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action 11 times in 2017 plus The Kelvin Baker Achievement 18 safety interventions, part of Award is in memory of Kelvin the RNLI Respect the Water Baker who was a leading campaign to reduce the number member of the lifeboat, well of deaths from drowning. We said ‘bye’ to Cedric Cox after 50 years’ service to station, Tony Phenix who stood down from crew after 12 years, Sally Smith who stood down as Treasurer after seven years and Dave Cato who stood down from crew. The Station decided that this year’s Kelvin Baker Achievement award should go to Charlotte Siely.

This was for all her extra work on station. She has been on the crew for eight years and has progressed to helm of both station’s lifeboats. to be able to help with training of crew on station. How she fits all this in as well as work and home life is a mystery. The award was presented by Jane Baker, Kelvin’s widow.

The Service Award for Memorable Service was awarded for the service on 19 July 2017.

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action on the afternoon of Wednesday 19 July. The pagers sounded at 3.15pm for reports of a broken down jet ski off the coast at Waxham, drifting out to sea. Happisburgh Atlantic, Howard Bell, was on its way at 3.25pm with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Sam Gillard and Martin Gibbs as crew. The Coastguard tasked them to search from Sea Palling towards Winterton. The jet ski had left Sea Palling an hour before the callout. The sea conditions were rough when the lifeboat arrived off Waxham. The Coastguard from Winterton could see the jet ski from the top of the sand dunes so they were able to guide the lifeboat crew to the jet ski which was now one mile off the coast. Both persons on the jet ski were uninjured so their craft was towed back to Sea Palling arriving at 4.12pm, where, with the help of the RNLI Lifeguards the jet ski and crew were landed on the beach and looked after by the lifeguards. Without the intervention of the lifeboat two lives could have been lost.

Howard Bell then returned to station at 4.28pm and had to do a net recovery due to the rough sea at Happisburgh. The lifeboat was made ready for service again.

It takes a whole team effort to launch the Lifeboat, not just crew. The shore crew were Bob Mann Steve Poll, Mike Forsdick, Eddy Askew, Cubitt Siely, Rob Ferguson, Cedric Cox and Justin Arnold, not forgetting the RNLI Lifeguards Sea Palling.

Sails return to Horsey Windpump for first time since 2014

After extensive restoration work, Horsey Windpump – an icon of the Norfolk Broads – is soon to return to its former glory.

Last month the newly finished sails were lifted into place atop the National Trust landmark. Nine months after the cap was returned following conservation by the charity, Horsey Windpump was finally complete once again. Winter storms and heavy rain that led to higher than normal water levels on the Broads delayed the lift.

The Windpump has been without sails since 2014. After they were removed following winter storm damage rendered them unsafe. Subsequent investigations uncovered extensive rot in the cap and an ambitious project began to see this Broadland landmark restored to full

Hedgehog Haven

working order.

Tim Whiting was the millwright who has been working on the project and has used the same tools and techniques that built Horsey Windpump over a hundred years ago. He said “We’ve faced some challenges with windy weather and very wet ground conditions, so we had to go back to the drawing board and devise a new method for lifting the stocks and sails. Normally we would have used a crane but the ground is so boggy it would likely sink. Instead we used a cherry picker and a lorry with a HIAB (small crane), which are both much lighter and therefore better able to cope with the conditions on site. Horsey’s sails are the largest we have ever constructed and she

Another arrival came in on 17 February. Willow was found out during the day time laying in the sun - not a good sign as it usually means a very sick hog. She was very cold, so the first thing to do was to gently let her get warm before offering food and water. I have her on a heat pad which sits underneath her container so it gives a constant steady heat. She is eating a little which is a good sign and is on a course of antibiotics, so fingers crossed she will recover.

There will be a fund raising Prize Bingo on Saturday 24 March at New Road Bowls and Snooker Club in North Walsham, 7.30 start. All funds raised goes towards the hedgehogs’ food and medication.

looked very different by the time the installation was finished.”

The National Trust’s project manager for this project, Paul Coleman, said “2018 will mark 75 years since Horsey Windpump’s sails last turned, after she was put out of action by a lightning strike in 1943. So it’s really exciting to have reached this historic point in the project and by the end of this year Horsey’s sails will once again be turning in the landscape, reinstating this magnificent heritage building’s place back in the community.” Now fitted, the stocks and sail frames will require the striking gear and shutters to be installed, which will enable the sails to be controlled and complete this phase of works. There is still a lot of internal works to be completed and this will be carried out over the next few months.

Debunking of January Divorce Rush

Clapham & Collinge Family Law Update by Neale Grearson

Recent statistics that have been published throw doubt on whether there is a rush for people to start Divorce Proceedings in January. Historically the media has drawn attention to what has been dubbed “D Day” being the first Monday in January when allegedly the most number of divorces are started in a year.

The figures that have been recently produced reveal that in fact more divorces are started in other periods during the year than the first quarter of the calendar year. In fact the attention drawn to “D Day” by the media and Solicitors has been criticised as resulting in more marriages coming to an end! Correctly (but perhaps cynically) it has also been pointed out that with the substantial delays that there are now with the centralised divorce arrangements to be able to time the starting of a divorce to a particular day at the beginning of January is almost impossible – but it did make good headlines!

There is always a period (sometimes short and sometimes long) between somebody deciding their marriage is over and the Proceedings actually being commenced. Solicitors will see clients at all stages in the breakdown of a relationship although very often clients only seek to instruct a Solicitor when they have already decided that their marriage is at an

end and there is no prospect of a reconciliation. Solicitors will always talk to clients about the prospects of marriage guidance or counselling assisting but other than on rare occasions when an early meeting is sought very often people make decisions based on the ending of a relationship without first taking legal advice. It is the repercussions of that breakdown and possible divorce that people then take advice upon from a Family Solicitor.

There therefore appear to be no genuine “highs” or “lows” when more or less divorces are started during a year. However there are key “pinch points” when pressure is put on relationships and very often these relate to occasions when couples are forced into a 24/7 situation such as over Christmas or for long holidays together. It is therefore a little unrealistic to continue to talk about “D Day” or January being the key period when divorces are started.

Would You Pay Extra Tax To Fund Legal Aid? There has been a lot of recent national debate about whether everyone should accept an increase in their income tax to better fund the NHS system. When legal aid was cut some years ago for the majority of people this was done purely on financial grounds. In essence there was not enough money to go round and so choices had to be made. There were stringent cuts in the old family legal aid system now leaving many people not being able to afford

to take advice from a Solicitor.

It does seem that whatever political party will be in Government in the foreseeable future it is very unlikely that the legal aid system will change. Certainly there is nothing on the agenda of any of the parties to suggest that money will be set aside to resurrect the old legal aid system for civil work and in particular family advice. Would you agree to pay more income tax to be able to fund the divorce of somebody who financially cannot afford to pay for it themselves? Whilst this is simplistic in essence that is one of the choices that the Government has to make.

The emphasis therefore seems to be on who needs protection or support in priority to somebody else. Domestic violence has been identified as a key area where someone who is financially eligible should have legal aid for Family Proceedings but where do you draw the line? What about Proceedings that deal with children and their long-term future where there is no domestic violence – would you agree to pay more income tax so that those people can get legal aid?

To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Family Law solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact Neale Grearson for appointments at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham on 01263 823398.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several of the cats mentioned last time have now left for their new homes and there has been a lot of interest in those that are still with us. The remaining young cat from the previous multi cat household has also joined her new family.

Gandalf is looking much better as his scars are now healing. The other three cats were due to come in last week but, unfortunately, our volunteer who was due to look after them was ill so their arrival was put on hold. Hopefully these three lovely cats will be with us by the time you read this. We have had instructions from the lady who is kindly looking after them in the meantime, to make sure that Tripod, who as her name suggests only has three legs, gets special attention as she cannot scratch behind her ear. We are very grateful to this lady who is making sure they are well fed and safe until they can join us. We have, on occasion, mentioned the colony of cats on the industrial estate. Although help has been given at several locations there, the bulk of the cats are on one site and are being fed regularly by a caring cat lover. We were therefore worried to see that there had been a large fire on the estate and were concerned that some of the cats might have been in the area and could have been harmed. When we called our friend he was able to

reassure us that the cats he cares for were safe and well. There are still some cats there that have to be caught and neutered and we are keeping our fingers crossed that all are caught soon, before it gets warmer and the cats start to breed again. Most are last year’s kittens which unfortunately Darcy, handsome young lad with lovely evaded capture until too old to orange eyes come into care to be socialised and found new homes. I believe most of the companies on the industrial estate are now aware that we are happy to help and, as well as paying for the adults to be neutered, will take the kittens into care providing they are still quite small. We are always happy to help anyone in this situation if they contact us. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats. org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Many of you may have heard about the recent spate of poisonings in dogs after eating shellfish washed up on our beaches. Sadly, two dogs died: a husky after eating a crab at Felixstowe, and a golden retriever after eating fish at Cley.

The Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (EIFCA) said it was “highly likely” both dogs died from paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). The organism that causes PSP is a naturally occurring marine bio-toxin typically associated with bivalve molluscs such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops. Tests carried out on the partially digested fish found high to very high levels of PSP toxins. The cause of the increased levels is not known, but the recent storms are thought to be the reason they were washed up on the beaches.

There have been reports from veterinary practices within the area of dogs developing mild gastrointestinal signs after walking on the beach, all have made full recoveries after symptomatic treatment. Fortunately, we have not seen any incidents here at Westover Vets, but I am still hearing regular reports of large numbers of dead marine life washed up on our beaches. Most recently high numbers of starfish at Sea Palling. In fact, the latest report from the EIFCA demonstrated that, further tests on starfish samples have found extremely high levels of toxins. The crabs, whelks and shrimps that have been tested have shown either very low levels of PSP toxins or no toxins at all.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

The CEO of Eastern IFCA, Julian Gregory, said, ‘Any risk is only because of ingestion so our advice to the public remains the same. There is a low level of risk to beach users and their pets but as a precaution it is suggested that dogs are kept under close control, on leads or muzzled and people should avoid handling starfish. There is no risk to people or pets from seawater.’ Until the cause of this spike in PSP levels is discovered it would be wise to exercise caution when walking dogs on the beach and keep them on a lead if they are likely to scavenge. If your dog becomes unwell following a beach walk contact your local vet as soon as possible. Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

REDWINGS REHOMES FIRST DONKEY AT DINOSAUR PARK

A little donkey in need of companionship has started the New Year with a new friend after Redwings Horse Sanctuary rehomed its first rescued donkey – to a dinosaur park!

Adorable Arnie, a Miniature Mediterranean donkey, had been living alone at the Secret Animal Garden at the Dinosaur Adventure Park, near Norwich, following the passing of his previous companion.

Dinosaur Adventure Park where he was happily welcomed by Arnie just before Christmas, and the two have been enjoying each other’s company ever since.

champion. With its long history of caring for animals, we knew he would be in safe and loving hands at the Secret Animal Garden – although we never expected to rehome a donkey to a dinosaur park!

“We hope this will now pave the way for us to look at rehoming more donkeys in the future.” Nicole Douglass, Secret Animal Garden Manager, added “Arnie’s little face lit up when he saw Addison – he was so happy to see another donkey and followed him around all day!

Donkeys are sensitive souls who form strong bonds and Arnie’s animal keepers knew he needed a new friend to prevent him feeling lonely, so they approached Redwings for help.

Due to the availability of suitable rescued donkeys, Redwings hadn’t rehomed one of these lovable long-eared creatures before but – as luck would have it – the perfect candidate had just arrived at the Sanctuary!

Handsome Addison had come to Redwings within a group of six donkeys from a fellow animal sanctuary in August last year but had yet to form any strong attachments within his herd.

So after a thorough medical and behavioural check, Addison was cleared to travel to the 20

“They’ve settled in well together and share a stable. Addison is even coming over to meet visitors which is lovely and everyone is asking about him. All the team here love him already and we look forward to the boys becoming best buddies!”

Arnie meets his new pal Addison for the first time

Rachel Angell, Redwings Operations and Rehoming Manager, said: “Donkeys crave company which is why we were delighted to help find Arnie a new friend and we hope he and Addison will be really happy together.

“Due to their strong bonds, donkeys normally need to be rehomed in pairs or small groups so it was by chance that lovely Addison arrived at the Sanctuary still looking for his own special

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB

The Warriors teams have all been on the road throughout February, battling against clubs PSC, FBI, Stalham, Besthorpe and YMCA. Most notable were the mixed game against PSC and the local derby game against Stalham Badminton Club!

The mixed match against PSC was always going to be tough, their mixed team pairs have been playing together for years and they have developed a good understanding between their players. Even so, the Warriors fought powerfully and with just the final game to play, the match score was tied at 4-4. Each game is split into the best of 3 ‘rubbers’ (played to 21) and the deciding game itself went 1-1 and into a ‘do or die’ finale. Unfortunately, our Warriors were closely beaten 21-19 in the decider and we lost the match 5-4 overall, but a superb effort and a really encouraging result against a good club.

Our team kit is currently sponsored by Labone Indian Restaurant in North Walsham, but any local businesses who would like to fully or part sponsor one or all of our teams or matches, or any new players who would like to come along, please email Ray on razerestringz@gmail.com or just search for Walsham Warriors on Facebook!

Ray is also a UKCC Level 2 Coach, registered with Badminton England and holds coaching sessions every Thursday at Stalham Sports Centre for all ages and abilities 6-8pm.

The League season runs September to May, but

the Club runs every Wednesday, throughout the year, 8pm - 10pm at North Walsham Sports Centre and invites anyone to come along who wishes to play at Club and/or League level. For beginners, or those returning to the game, the Sports Centre still has social badminton sessions on Friday and Mondays 8pm - 10pm, which everyone is welcome to attend.

• FREE measuring and FREE Estimating • free local delivery!

In the local mixed derby against our good friends over at Stalham, again we were up against a very strong team who have competed in the leagues for a few years, with their men’s team in the division above ours. The Warriors played fairly well, despite illnesses playing a part and could hardly believe it when the match was tied at 3-3. However, the experience of Stalham got the better of us as adrenaline and nerves kicked in. We went down fighting, but Stalham took a deserved 6-3 win. Bring on next season, perhaps we can reverse the score!

North Walsham Table Tennis

Lester saves match-point but Aylsham conquer NWSCE

In the First Division, NWSCE’s Tom Wardle and James and Ben Lester hosted Aylsham Conqueror’s Zach Homfray-Davies, Robbie Ollman and Ashley Marsh. An incredible opener saw Homfray-Davies force a decider from two down against James Lester. The NWSCE player, who has only suffered one loss so far this season, raced into a 5-0 lead in the decider but once again his opponent fought back. HomfrayDavies had a match-point chance at 10-9 but Lester closed out the win 14-12 and completed his maximum with two wins in four. Ben Lester beat Homfray-Davies in straight but with the remaining singles all going to the visitors, Homfray-Davies and Marsh won the doubles in five against Wardle and James Lester to seal a 6-4 win. On the adjoining table a derby saw NWSCC’s Frank Weston, John Chapman and Phil Mole take on NWSCD’s Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone. NWSCD won 9-1 to increase their lead at the top of the division as the only two battles not decided in straight sets were five-setters for Porritt who lost out 11-9 in

the fifth to Mole before being taken the distance by an impressive performance from Chapman. The following week Aylsham Albion’s Carrie Last made a great recovery from two sets and 2-8 down to beat Andrew Weston as NWSCE lost out 6-4 away to the Aylsham side with James Lester taking another maximum and Ben Lester picking up a win in three against John Hall. There was better news for NWSCC also away at Aylsham, as they beat Conqueror 7-3. In the Second Division, LCC Dolphin’s Ian Kidger and Mick and Keegan Hammond hosted NWSCF with Gudi Scham winning the opener in four against Mick Hammond. Edna Stone beat Kidger in five, but the Dolphin recovered from two sets down against both Scham and Sarah Tudhope as the hosts won 8-2. John Harris took the place of Stone as a maximum from Scham and a brace from Tudhope saw NWSCF draw with LCC Starfish. In the Premier Division, Aylsham Hathor’s Harley Dyson, Peter Ward and Ray Gale hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Westgate and

Then they travelled to Diss, just clinging on for a 36-34 win. They are currently sixth in the League on 61 points, 29 behind leaders Brentwood and eight ahead of seventh placed Priorians. Roydon Miller was January Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month. The New Zealander comes from Woodville, a small community in southern North Island, where his exploits with the Vikings are keenly followed, especially by his siblings Eric (aged 9) and Zoe (14). The Raiders progressed to the Final of the Norfolk Cup competition for 2nd XVs, the Bowl, defeating their Norwich counterparts 24 -12. Their
