Marilyn Baker to Visit North Walsham Salvation Army
The Salvation Army North Walsham recently held a special meeting at its Hall Lane base attended by the Mayor of North Walsham, Councillor Sally Stuckie. The volunteers who each give hours of their time to support the very successful shop were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and then enjoyed a meal together. The shop in Church Street, under the management of volunteer manager Steve Mortlock, is proving very popular and successful with a good range of nearly new clothing and many other items available at very reasonable prices. All proceeds from the shop go to support the Army's community work in the North Walsham area.

Players take to the stage!
The North Walsham Players pantomime this year was ‘Treasure Island’ and was staged at North Walsham Community Centre over two days.
It featured a cast of 15, for whom some this was their first time in a live show. The show was rehearsed over just seven weeks, twice a week.
Director and performer Colin Jeary said he was very happy with the way the cast gelled together in the musical panto, and also the great support from the people of North Walsham who came and supported the show.
This year’s show was raising money for ‘NARS’ – Norfolk Accident Rescue Service. Sundays show saw North Walsham’s Beavers make a visit to the panto and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Colin added that thanks were also due to the local businesses who supported the group, including Improve Interiors, The Foot, Health & Massage Clinic, Sensui and Carl Bird Ltd.
Plans are now being drawn up to start celebrating the Players 20th birthday.
New faces are always welcome, whether onstage or backstage. For more please contact Colin Jeary on 01692 402116
Chinese New Year Comes to Millfield
The Chinese New Year was celebrated in style at Millfield Primary School last month.
The whole school took part in ‘China Day’, which saw the children celebrating in the traditions, culture and delights of the orient.
Each class spent the day making Chinese lanterns, paper dragons, Chinese inspired art and the children’s favourite, food tasting! Millfield were delighted to welcome Janice Wang, Lana Li, Even Fang and Jane Young, four Chinese students from UEA, who talked to the children about their culture and traditions.
In addition to this, they taught the children a selection of Chinese words. Madeline Wicks in Year 5 said “I loved the day. It was really fun to have a Chinese person teach us the language.”
At the end of the school day the parents were invited into the hall to see their children’s creative displays and sample some Chinese food.

The school were amazed by the phenomenal generosity of Mr and Mrs Wang, who own the Great Wall Chinese takeaway in North Walsham, as they cooked and donated all of the delicious food, many of the dishes being ones which are not part of the normal takeaway menu but traditional Chinese delicacies. Their benevolent gift spread over the length of four tables much to the delight of the children and parents.
The children agreed that this was one of the best parts of the day!
Evie Blyth in Year 2 said “I enjoyed the food tasting at the end of the day because I like trying new things”.

Far too young
Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
Almost half of people in the UK (47%) have never discussed inheritance with their families and a quarter of them (26%) do not think it is a priority. According to this recent poll, the reason is that most people do not think that they are old enough to worry about it.
Government statistics show that Inheritance Tax (IHT) raised £4.9billion in the last financial year. Although this is partly due to rising property prices and a freezing of the IHT threshold, it is also down to poor planning.
This is because it is a highly emotional subject, as entirely understandably, people generally don’t like talking about money or death! The research
Kevlin House
At the Norfolk Care Awards held on 22 February at Sprowston Manor, Kevlin House were the winners of two awards ‘Excellence in Delivering Dementia Care’ and ‘Rising Star’ with our team member Leah Mulrooney.
Mandy Masters Manager said ‘I am very proud of my team and our achievements, we work hard every day to make a real difference to the people who live with us and to have this recognised is wonderful’.
Kevlin House is a small family run care home in North Walsham. The home accommodates 15 older people with a dementia, we have 18 members of staff making for a warm and homely atmosphere.
We provide meaningful relationship focused care. Our care is based around each person’s individual needs and wishes, and we value and respect how each person wishes to spend their day.
The wonderful thing about Kevlin House is our flexibility towards the individual care of the people who live here.
At Kevlin House we have disposed of the task side of care, it’s all about the individual person and how they choose to live each day. We encourage people to become involved in the daily living activities of the home and encourage meaningful occupation.
We thrive as one big family, just people living and working together.

also shows that one in ten people would like to get to grips with it but just haven’t found the right time, or just don’t know where to start.
This is why a general review of your affairs can be so helpful. Solicitors especially, much more than accountants, have a wide range of skills to enable a number of different possible arrangements to be put in place. Often a review takes place at the same time as making an up-to-date tax-efficient Will. We can talk with you about making gifts of assets and advising on what to give, how to give it and to whom. Issues specific to the older or more vulnerable client can also be sensitively considered. We can see you alone or with family members. However, we are professionally bound and highly-trained to ensure that there is no undue influence and that questions of mental capacity are thoroughly and gently considered. All this can be interwoven with addressing potential lifetime tax planning issues such as a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) liability, which can often be managed or delayed using a number of possible methods.
It was a distinguished Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer who said wryly that Inheritance Tax is a voluntary tax paid by those who trust their families less than they trust the tax man.

Step closer to a cure for Parkinson’s in Norfolk
People in Norfolk are being asked to unite with thousands of others across the UK and step closer to a cure for Parkinson’s. Walk for Parkinson’s at Blickling Estate takes place on Saturday 12 May, and is one of a series of walk events to be held across the UK for Parkinson’s UK during 2018.
There are a range of distances on offer to suit everyone, with a two-mile, 3.5-mile and 5.5-mile walk to choose from. So whether you’re up for a challenging walk or a gentle stroll, there is something for everyone. Team entries are welcome, so why not sign up with your friends, family and colleagues.

Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK Dave Clark was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011. He is a keen walker himself and is encouraging people
He said “We want to make 2018 our biggest year yet for the Walk for Parkinson’s series. I’d like to invite everyone, whatever their level of Walking and other types of exercise is particularly fitness, to take advantage of the many different types of walks, scenic routes and distances available. "I can be contacted on mobile 07767492456 and customers can still drop off their repairs at 7 Church Street or at Unit D , Home farm Enterprise Zone , Hall Road Cromer," Richard commented.
It is only the name that is going as Francis (Frank) Stewart with his mother Sally are taking over the business. The name will be Brightside Electrical Ltd.
Frank started as a Saturday boy and is now a fully qualified electrician. He is very popular with our customers, especially the older ladies! Sally has been with the business for just over 2 years on the accounts and admin side.
The rest of the contracting staff will remain the same.
"We hope that everyone will give Frank and Sally their full support and we wish them well in their new venture."

‘Transition’ Art Exhibition
‘Transition' is an Interactive Art Exhibition by local artist Jan Ellmore, taking place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March at The Manor Hotel Mundesley.
Jan says “It is really a celebration of art”. While Jan was painting new work for the exhibition, she was so absorbed in mindful contentment, it suddenly made her feel sad for those who suffer with depression. If only they could submerge their minds into a creative fulfilling hobby.
So over the two days of the exhibition there will be an art table set up for those who fancy giving painting a try. Jan will be at hand to advise if needed, and will also be doing a few demonstrations.
If you have an iphone or ipad and ear buds bring them along to listen to the music that inspired three of her paintings. There will also be ear phones supplied.
Jan runs an art group in nearby Trunch. Being a self-taught artist, Jan decided to study at Paston College for Fine Art A levels at the age of 53, and obtained A1's for both AS level and A1 level, going on to win the Tutors Award to further her art career.
Art is a hobby that you can do at any time or place. If the weather is good, get out and paint. If it’s raining, get out some photo to copy. There are NO restrictions with art. Do it for yourself, for your own enjoyment. It is just a bonus if others enjoy viewing it too.
There will be some of Jan's past demo pieces and work being sold for donations of £3 upwards to go towards the voluntary run 'Open Door Cafe' in Mundesley Church Rooms, for people who feel isolated.

Waveney Stardust Trust
The boats are nearly ready! Despite the cold snap, plans are well advanced for the new season for Waveney Stardust Trust.
Waveney Stardust is a charity that began in 1988 with the aim of helping the elderly and people with disabilities to enjoy the waterways of Norfolk in a safe and easily accessible environment at a reduced cost.
The charity now has two specially adapted cruisers with ramps, lifts and open plan level floors to provide safe access for people and wheelchairs. The boats are run by highly trained volunteers who take parties of up to 12 people afloat on subsidised cruises on our beautiful Broads (subsidised rates require at least one person to have an impairment that prevents them enjoying a cruise on a standard boat.).
Last year we took bookings from care homes, support groups, families, schools, private parties, clubs, associations, and community groups. Each cruise is tailored to the group so, for example, on some trips the families have decorated the boat for anniversaries and birthday parties. On other occasions the skipper has tracked wildlife, manoeuvring the boat so that eagle-eyed bird watchers can take their photographs, and on another trip the boat has rendezvoused with the ice-cream boat so that children with sight impairments could choose their treat!
The boats sail from Norwich, Stalham, and Brundall and the season commences with half and full day trips on 1 April. See the website for more details http://www.waveneystardust.co.uk

Red Loft Theatre Company attracted large audiences with their ‘Showtime at the Coronation Hall’ last summer replacing what was the Mundesley Festival. Now, the newly established theatre company is to perform the multi-award winning musical Oliver! bringing the classic Dickens novel to the stage.
Having moved to Norfolk from Hertfordshire, Roy began running his market stall in 2015, baking delicious cakes, pastries and savoury pasties for the locals of North Walsham and Aylsham and is now a familiar friendly face. Unbeknown to many of his customers, Roy has a passion for the arts, having appeared in panto as a child and both written and performed in musicals for his church group. He has always adored the show Oliver! and often imagined himself playing the role of Fagin, the devious mastermind behind a gang of young pick-pockets in Victorian London. In April, Roy will finally achieve his life-long ambition, performing alongside some of Norfolk’s greatest young talent.
Playing the title role of orphan Oliver Twist, 10 year old Autumn Ridgeway is an experienced young performer from Sprowston. She sings with Broadland Youth Choir, and is set to make her debut performance with Red Loft Theatre Company at the Atrium. 11 year old Kyle Bowles, playing the role of the Artful Dodger, attends North Walsham Junior School and will also be making his debut with the company, having gained experience both acting and with St Nicholas’ boys choir.
Paris Chandler, a beauty advisor at Benefit Cosmetics, will undertake the role of Nancy, alongside the abusive Bill Sykes, played by Seb Gatfield. Soon to be a published author, Seb works in North Walsham and is currently preparing for his move to Exeter University.
The cast is particularly delighted to be working with Roy - not just due to his acting skills but because of the trays of delicious cakes he turns up to rehearsal with, which help to keep everyone’s energy levels up!
Red Loft’s director Tracey Loftus said “Roy is such a natural performer and was delighted about taking the role of Fagin. The day the cast list went up on the website, his acceptance came through in under a minute - now that’s enthusiasm!”
Oliver! will take place at The Atrium in North Walsham from Tuesday 10 April to Saturday 14th. For bookings visit www.ticketsource.co.uk or phone 0333 666 3366 Kevlin House 66-68 Norwich Road North Walsham NR28 0DX Tel 01692 402355 mandy@hollycoombe.co.uk

Busy month for North Walsham Air Cadets
2110 (North Walsham) Squadron have had a busy February.
Firstly, the Squadron Padre, Rev Paul Cubitt enrolled four new cadets. Cadets Callum Fenn (14), Loklan Robbie (14), Noah Webb (12) and Daniel Winfield (13) were all enrolled in a short ceremony at the Squadron.
All four of the cadets have already achieved their Heartstart first aid award and shortly after their formal enrolment Callum Fenn and Loklan Robbie took another big step in their cadet career when, with Cdt Sam Honey they went off to RAF Cranwell for a day of flying. This was their first experience of flying in a small single engine trainer, the Grob Tutor and all of them were given the chance to take control of the aeroplane, whilst Cdt Fenn experienced the thrill of aerobatics.
While the three were flying Cadet Flight
Sergeant Luca Wedge-Clarke (16) was undertaking a gruelling day of training for the 100 mile Nijmagen march later in the year.
his future career.
Finally the Squadron Commander Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens undertook a first aid course to enable him to continue first aid training for the cadets.
In the coming months there will be even more exciting opportunities for the cadets and staff to get involved in.
Cdt Loklan Robbie returns from his flight
At the same time Cdt Corporal Orson Ayers (18) spent the weekend on a residential Senior NCO training course. The course will help him progress in the ATC but also provide skills for

First Highlights announced for Holt Festival’s tenth anniversary
North Norfolk’s award-winning Holt Festival is planning to celebrate its tenth anniversary in style judging by the ‘early’ announcements that have just been made ahead of the full programme being revealed later in the year. The 2018 Festival runs from 21 – 29 July.
He promises to thrill the Theatre in the Woods audience on Saturday 28 July with a crowd-pleasing romp through his best-loved songs.
Jasper Carrott, one of the UK’s favourite comedians, has recovered from the health scare that caused him to cancel last year’s appearance at short notice. He is thrilled to be bringing his show Stand Up & Rock, combining stand up comedy with an all-star band featuring Bev Bevan, founding member of ELO and The Move. Jasper said ‘I’m really pleased to be coming to Holt after the disappointment of last year’s cancellation. It’s a thrill to be invited to fill the outdoor theatre with laughter and music for the closing concert’.
Another household name headed for Holt is chart topping singer, songwriter and entertainer Leo Sayer. Leo first hit the charts in 1973 and his ‘Gold Collection’ album returned him there in January 2018. M CO RE

There’s a welcome return for Colin Cloud with his astounding deductions and Jasper Carrott outrageous stunts. He describes his new show as ‘designed to challenge your perception of the world, the light and the dark.’ Other shows have been announced from former leader of the Liberal Democrats Lord (Paddy) Ashdown, James Gilchrist, one of the UK’s leading tenors, and an exclusive show from Italian classical piano megastar Gloria Campaner who teams up with Polish jazz star Leszek Możdżer for ‘Two Pianos’. Pianist Lucy Parham is joined by actor Alex Jennings (recently seen on TV as Prince Leopold in ITV’s Victoria) to tell the story of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

ED
Artistic Director Stash Kirkbride said ‘I hope this initial selection of acts gives a taste of our intentions for this year. I can’t wait to tell the world about the full programme with more big names to announce alongside acts that I think will become firm favourites in the future’.

Rosemary Fabb, of Carr Lane, Roughton, near Cromer, was sentenced at Norwich Magistrates’ Court after being caught in an undercover sting by North Norfolk District Council officers.
Mrs Fabb was also ordered to pay NNDC’s full costs, of £12,616, as well as a victim surcharge.
Mrs Fabb had been running an unlicensed puppy farm from outbuildings at her home address. Following indications that Mrs Fabb was breeding without a licence, North Norfolk District Council officers visited the premises in early 2017 and bought a puppy.
A warrant was then obtained and NNDC officers accompanied by the police and a vet returned to the site in February last year.
A number of dirty, matted and unsocialised dogs were found on the premises, living in cold and small pens in agricultural outbuildings that contained faeces and urine. There was evidence of a breeding operation and no indication that the dogs had been let out of their pens. Despite a number of dogs being kept in each pen, only one basket per pen was provided, and most of those lacked any bedding. The vet found that many of the dogs had untreated illnesses and conditions.
Last November, Mrs Fabb pleaded guilty to operating a dogbreeding establishment without a licence but not guilty to a number of charges relating to animal welfare, and a trial date was set. Since then, a further visit was made to her premises, in January this year, when more evidence of an unlicensed dog-breeding establishment was found. The condition of the premises had deteriorated further, and this visit resulted in a number of further animal-welfare charges and one further dog-breeding charge being brought. Mrs Fabb signed the dogs over to the RSPCA to avoid them being seized by NNDC, and all 10 dogs have now been rehomed. Cllr Richard Price, North Norfolk District Council Portfolio Holder for Licensing, said “This shows that we can and we will prosecute, and it should be a warning for others. We don’t take enforcement lightly but we do take animal welfare very seriously, and our licensing team will take action whenever necessary. It also highlights the usefulness of the Regulatory Investigatory Powers Act 2000, which helped us secure the evidence required to prosecute this case.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Taz, Treacle and Tripod, the three remaining cats which were waiting to come in, are now in care and have quickly adapted to their new surroundings. Once they have been checked by the vets and vaccinated they will be available for adoption. We are extremely grateful to the lady who has taken care of them, and, on behalf of the cats, thank her for all her help.
The branch has been running for nearly nineteen years and during that time we have re-homed many cats and kittens. When they leave we always advise the new family to keep them in for several weeks to allow them to get used to their new home before venturing outside. Although most follow our advice there have been a few occasions when a cat has escaped, much to their new family’s distress. I can remember one instance several years ago where the cat flap was set to allow existing cats to come in but not to let the new ones out. The two new cats had worked out that if they positioned themselves nearby they could pull the cat flap door up and make their escape. One was quickly caught but the other was missing for several days before being found hiding in a neighbour’s garage.
Faith, a quite timid little cat, the last of the cats from the group taken in last year, decided to go one better. She had only been in her home for a few days and appeared to have settled and was beginning to enjoy the chance to sit on a lap and receive lots of attention. However, during the night she smashed through the locked cat flap and made a dash for freedom. Her new family contacted us for advice as they were very upset for this to have happened and desperate to have her back. A cat trap was put in place but on the first night she managed to take the food without

setting it off. Although there was just one sighting of her we believed she was still in the area as most cats will hide in these circumstances. We were all really concerned when the weather deteriorated during her second week of freedom. We know that cats are quite resilient and will find shelter in these circumstances (to feral cats it is second nature to do this). Imagine our delight to receive a call just two weeks after her escape to learn that she had finally Faith, now safely home been caught and was now safely back in with her family her home, receiving lots of fuss and attention. She has lost some weight, which is understandable in the circumstances, but is really glad to back inside. The cat flap has now been boarded up to prevent further escapes until she is ready to go outside again and the cat trap has already been out with another family who recently re-homed cats from us. In this instance the cat escaped from its harness on its first walk outside. Thankfully, within a day, she had been caught and is now safely back in her new home! Cats can be very clever and sometimes find their human companions easy to outwit.

I now have a total of 40 in care. Every hut is occupied and six containers are in use. Running out of space, two vulnerable ones are residing in their containers in the lounge!
With the recent freezing weather, there is no chance of releasing any that are ready to go. Of the ones in the outside huts, most are still hibernating to keep them warm. I gave them lots of extra bedding. Amazingly Duster and Mr Prickles have still been coming out every evening and feeding. The hardest part has been trying to keep their water from freezing over.
Willow, whom I mentioned last time, has responded well to her treatment. She is eating very well and is gaining weight so it's looking good for her to be released at a later date.
As the weather turns milder hedgehogs will be awaking from hibernation very hungry and thirsty so please put out a shallow dish of water and a tasty treat of dog or cat food (not in gravy or fish flavour).

Life is for living with the support of My Guide
Has your sight loss affected your health and wellbeing and stopped you from doing the things you used to do?
The charity Guide Dogs provides more than just a dog. My Guide is a service that can provide you with a volunteer to help increase your confidence, fitness and enable you to get out and about in your community. This could be a trip to the local café, joining a new social group or walking around your local area to increase your confidence.
Lisa, a mum of two was diagnosed with a condition which affected her peripheral vision called Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 21. In the beginning, Lisa’s life wasn’t affected by the condition. However, as the years passed it was a roller coaster of highs and lows, gradually losing confidence as her eye sight worsened.
Earlier last year, Lisa was introduced to a My Guide volunteer, Karen. Lisa and Karen meet up once a week and join in with walks organised by the local rambling group. These walks range in difficulty and length but always end with a coffee and cake! Lisa also meets Karen in Norwich for a coffee, which is also adding to her increasing confidence. Lisa has also started to learn how to use the long cane, which has started to open her world. Lisa says “since I have been cane training my confidence has soared. It’s lovely to have my independence back and get out there again.”
“I am so thankful for Guide Dogs and My Guide for their support in helping me to independence again.”
Kerry Matthews, My Guide Ambassador said “A guide dog is not suitable for everyone; therefore My Guide gives us the opportunity to reach more people with sight loss and increase their health and wellbeing”
In addition to volunteers, My Guide also provide training to help friends and family members to understand sight loss and how support someone close to them.
For more information on accessing these services please contact Kerry on 0345 143 0223 or e-mail Kerry.matthews@guidedogs.org.uk

Come and join the Norfolk Mountaineers
Also known as - read on to find out! Every two years you will find the Mountaineers atop a mountain in the Alps. To date we have climbed nine different peaks, having repeated two therefore making a total of eleven since 1994.
I suppose that when faced with the might and height of Beeston Hill (Bump) near Sheringham at around 103 metres, a trip to the Alps is a cakewalk! A trip to Beeston is not now overly high on our list but a non-Norfolk Mountain is something else.
Our conquests range from the Alpspitze in 1994 near Nesselwang at 2,628 metres then following on we were on the Nebelhorn at 1,900 metres, the Breitenberg at 1,838 repeated in 2016 and several others in between all over 1,800 metres. Our highlight was Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze at a breathtaking, as the air was a bit thin, 2,962 metres.
22
I expect all of this sounds very pioneering but I must confess that apart from the Tegelberg at 1,730 metres conquered from bottom to top by a few of us, the others all required the assistance of the cable cars. That is apart from the last few hundred metres to the summit and this is usually challenging enough. The views, wild flower meadows and the food at the top are all breathtaking and are available to you all via membership of the North Walsham Town Twinning, The Friends of Friesenried.
So for more information on our trips to Germany, the mountains and exchanges please call Steve on 01953 607119 or Dianne on 01692 402726. We need you, especially as flag planters!
In the meantime come and meet us at our stall selling slices of delicious German recipe cakes at the North Walsham Fun Day on 24 June and enjoy a slice of Germany.

Summer bodies are made in winter
Summer is round the corner and the sooner we start to prepare for it, the more time we have to show results. Here is a selection of our treatments that you can benefit from.
Varicose and Thread Veins Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone. How can a beam of light replace a surgeon’s knife? Is this too good to be true? Not any more. Non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated it’s guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body.

Thanks to our proven gold-standard lasers and extensive experience we are able to treat every skin type- from very fair to dark skin patients.
Laser Liposuction This is the perfect time to consider liposuction for reducing unwanted areas of fat. The procedure is carried out purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in, walk-out basis and most patients are recovered by 3-5 days. Medically supervised weight loss treatments are also available.
Did you know we can remove unsightly moles and blemishes without the knife? We offer treatment options for a variety of conditions so check our website out for more information www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737
Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal and Tattoo removal for all skin types. Why it is a great idea to see us. When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the wild west in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines.
As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind, we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety.
We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB
First off, thank you to everyone who came to our Quiz Night on Saturday 24 February it was a most enjoyable evening and we raised £73 for the club!
Our next event is a Quiz and Challenge Night on Saturday 28 April at 7.30pm for teams of four (or less). There will be Rounds of normal quiz questions, separated by fun Krypton Factor or Crystal Maze style Team Challenge Rounds, like Logic, Dexterity or Luck, although don’t worry, no physical challenges! It will be fun and will help us raise funds for the Club, thank you for your continued support and keep an eye out for posters going up locally!
The Warriors have had a peculiar couple of weeks in terms of matches, with only one out of four fixtures actually going ahead. Firstly,
our Men’s 2nd Team travelled to Hellesdon to play YMCA, although upon arrival it seems that nobody from YMCA had remembered to book the courts and the hall was already set up for school exams the following day. The second match did go ahead, with our Men’s 1st Team taking on Eaton Eagles, who were relegated into our Division at the end of last season. However, they are still a very good team and fully expected to beat us 9-0, so it was nice to be able to put a dent in their spokes and steal two games to only lose 7-2. As a new club, every match, every game and every point we win is a step to improvement and future success! The last two fixtures both had to be cancelled due to the ‘Beast from the East’ and treacherous driving conditions, meaning that we will have to rearrange two games away in Attleborough against Besthorpe’s 1st and 2nd Teams.
Any local businesses who would like to fully or part sponsor one or all of our Teams or Matches, or any new players who would like to come along, please email Ray on razerestringz@gmail.com or just search for Walsham Warriors on Facebook.
Ray is also a UKCC Level 2 Coach, Registered with Badminton England and holds coaching sessions every Thursday at Stalham Sports Centre for all ages and abilities 6-8pm, for just £5 per person.
Badminton is a great way to shake off the cold, but here’s wishing you all Warmer Weather from The Warriors!
North Walsham Gymnastics Club Success at Miss Quatro 2018 This year so far has been very busy for North Walsham Gymnastics Club, now home to over 500 hundred children taking classes each week since the move to the new premises in September last year.
On 3 and 4 March nine of the Club’s competition squad gymnasts didn't let the ‘beast from the east’ stop them travelling down to London by car and train to take part in this year’s Miss Quatro 2018 ‘Jewel of the South’ competition. It was unfortunate and disappointing for some gymnasts who were unable to attend due to the adverse weather conditions during the weekend.
This kick started a fantastic year of competitive and general competitions for the Club, with the girls competing against clubs from all over the South and East of England with some successful results. The theme for the competition was ‘Hollywood’ and the girls had to create their own number boards to be judged by the staff with the best one winning a prize.
Head coach Alexis Thurston said "a big well done to all the girls who took part, I am very proud of the hard work they have put in over the last few weeks in preparation for this competition, even though due to the bad weather the gym had to shut for a few training sessions leading up to the event. They still gave it their all and as a club we have had some amazing results."
A big congratulations to Lulu Gillett, aged 6, who was competing for the first time against five other young girls and came 4th, Olivia Shingles, aged 12, came 6th place overall, with the highest score on the beam against a field of 20 other gymnasts. They
North 28 Walsham Times 538 17th March 2018
both received rosettes for their achievement.
This is the furthest the Club has travelled to compete, but is a great way for the girls to grow in confidence, setting the Club up nicely for the Norfolk County Grades in April at the UEA where many of the young gymnasts will compete in a range of different grades and skill levels.

A Coronet of Curls
To have a head of tousled curls has been a long held dream. Those artful, tumbled, careless coils of black, brown, red or cream. To have your hair piled on your head and tied with pretty bows Hairstyles the Miss Bennetts wore to seduce their handsome beaux! Of course, some heaving bosoms helped to concentrate men’s thoughts, For that was all most young girls had to win the beaux they sought. That was many years ago when women were encouraged To take up ladylike pursuits to prepare them for their marriage. These days are very different when women are more free, To live their lives the way they want - be how they want to be. But despite the trend for straightened hair, worn by today’s young girls, I still hanker for a coronet of pretty, tousled curls. Frances Wraight

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCD two points away from quarter-final
The quarter-final line-up in the Handicap Doubles Cup was decided with all second round matches completed. At North Walsham Sports Centre, NWSCD’s Richard Porritt (34), Stuart Hook (35) and Phil Stone (30) hosted Aylsham Hathor’s Jonny Gale (33), Peter Ward (28) and Ray Gale (30). It was tight from the off as Hathor won the opening battle on the golden point before the hosts levelled by doing the same. The visitors took the third battle 61-58, NWSCD the fourth by the same score. 1-1 and 2-2 became 3-3 and then 4-4 and the final decisive battle saw Ward and Ray Gale (29) beat Stone and Porritt (32) 61-59 to seal a very tight victory 5-4. On the adjoining table, NWSCC’s John Chapman,(43) David Binns (28) and John Harris (49) hosted LCC Dolphin’s Keegan Hammond (42), Neil Edwards (46) and Stephen Ratcliffe (49). After dropping the opener, Dolphins took the next four battles. Chapman and Binns beat Edwards and Ratcliffe 61-59 to keep NWSCC'S hopes alive. The hosts picked up one more win before Edwards and Ratcliffe booked Dolphin’s spot in the last eight with a 61-56 win against Chapman and Binns. Dolphins won a dead rubber on the golden point to conclude a 6-3 victory.
At Trunch, Seaflame’s Swordfish’s Ray Amo (44), John Eglen (50) and Nigel Brady (47) hosted NWSCE’s James Lester (28), Ben Lester (40) and Andrew Weston (40). The handicap did not click in as Swordfish kept level winning the played points of the opener 16-14 before NWSCE drew level taking the played points of the second 21-9. Eglen served off on the golden point to hand the visitors the third before James Lester and Weston (34) hauled the handicap back well to beat Eglen and Brady (48) 61-58. The Lesters (34) took on Amo and Brady (45) in the fifth battle and a really good start saw them draw level at 48-48 before winning 61-56. Lester and Weston (40) sealed the tie for NWSCE 61-57 against Amo and Eglen (47) 61-57. Swordfish won two of the three dead rubbers as NWSCE came away with a 6-3 victory. NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Werner Zivna and John Vaughan won 5-1 away to Sharks to join NWSCE in the last eight.
In the Premier Division at North Walsham Sport’s Centre, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Westgate and Werner Zivna hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and James Lester (playing up). Elliott opened with a win in five from two sets to one down
No Vikings matches to report on in this article - no scheduled fixture on 24 February and a week later the match versus Brentwood was a victim of the weather.
Will Hodgson (pictured) was February's Vikings Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month. Brought up in Totnes, Devon he joined in 2011 when a UEA student. Now a teacher at Angel Road Junior School in Norwich, he has made 129 appearances and with 386 points is the Club's ninth highest points’ scorer. Last season he made the successful transition to no 8, but following Hal Riley's departure has recently returned to his original position of centre. "Whilst I prefer no 8 I'm happy to play wherever best suits the team," he explained, adding, "I enjoy playing for North Walsham tremendously, we are a very young team, learning all the time and with the coaching support

against Beane before Westgate beat Lester 7-11, 13-11, 11-9, 2-11, 11-6. BaldockYaxley took a maximum with two wins in straight followed by a five set win against Westgate.
