Eggscellent Fun for All!

North Walsham Memorial Park hosted the second annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 31 March, organised by local charity North Walsham Play.

The sell-out event saw 250 families join in the Easter fun trying to find clues left by the Easter Bunny to solve the 3 riddles.

All children left with goodie bags full of Easter treats, which were kindly sponsored by North Walsham Community Shop and Carl Bird Ltd.

Eggscellent Fun for All!

Continued from front cover... Trustee and Founder, Matthew Smith, said that we was immensely pleased with the support the local community has shown towards the event. He added “we want to provide affordable family friendly events that everyone can access and enjoy whilst at the same time putting all the money raised back into the local community. We’ve had a great month in terms of donations and grants and are moving ever closer to our target amount”.

Cllr Hester, who is also a Trustee of North Walsham Play added “I would like to thank the people of North Walsham for making this another successful event for the town” North Walsham Play has recently been awarded a grant of £10502.00 via the North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund along with a pledge of £5000 from the Hobson Charity and £500 from Interconnector. This builds on the very successful year of fundraising that North Lewis Walsham have had. The charity hopes to be in a position to have the necessary funds secured before the end of 2018.

The much needed new play park will see state of the art play equipment installed with a pirate and castle theme. The new park will include DDA compliant equipment including wheelchair accessible roundabout, basket swing and activity boards.

North Walsham Play have many events planned for the remainder of 2018 including market place car boots.

See their website www.nwplay.co.uk for more information.

New Children’s Club at Salvation Army

The Salvation Army North Walsham is to launch a new children's Music & Drama Club. Following the successful production of children's musicals 'A Fishy Tail', 'Giant Slayer' and 'It's a Party’, it is hoped that the new group will form a kid’s gospel choir as well as performing sketches and other things.

The group will take place on Mondays and will commence on Monday 16 April at 4pm.

'Each evening will give the kids a chance to have fun with games etc to break the ice as well as learning drama and some exciting new songs' says Major Richard Durrant of the North Walsham Corps.

If anyone wants to know more they can contact Richard on 01692 652263 or Richard.durrant@salvationarmy.org.uk.

All children aged 6-12 years are welcome to come to the group which will meet during school term time at the Army Hall in Hall Lane, North Walsham.

‘Do Not Resuscitate’

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

We are introducing a small credit-card-sized card for our clients who make a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare (“LPA-H+W”) or an Advance Decision (also known as a “Living Will”). In the same way as a kidney donor card, this can be carried at all times to alert medics to the existence of the LPA-H+W. When found, it can be acted upon quickly, especially in an emergency. Also, it is a good idea to register your LPA-H+W with your GP and medical Consultant. These two steps should ensure that you are not resuscitated if you do not wish to be.

Increasingly, care plans of care home residents and hospital patients note any decision on their resuscitation; however, a recent report found that up to 40,000 patients a year across England were having Do Not Resuscitate (“DNR”) orders imposed on them without their families being made aware.

A DNR order refers to a decision by medics not to attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) if a patient’s heart stops beating or they stop breathing. It does not cover other treatment decisions.

CPR in real life is not the same as on a television drama and is often a massively physical process which, as well as possibly being futile, can result in broken ribs, bruising and pain and much reduced quality of life. Yet many families see it as something that should be done to save their loved one. For many, not performing CPR means giving up and accepting death.

Factors affecting a patient’s decision on the withholding of life-sustaining treatment include the acceptance of the inevitable progression of disease, trust of doctors, the feeling of being a burden to others, symptoms and the preference to die naturally.

A medical clinician has the responsibility for deciding whether a particular treatment is or is not necessary and appropriate for the patient; this includes the pros and cons of CPR. There is a presumption of patient involvement and that of their family wherever possible.

It is not lawful for a medic to treat a patient who has capacity and refuses treatment. Nor is it lawful to treat a patient who lacks mental capacity if he has made a valid Advance Decision to refuse it. Neither, is it lawful to treat a patient if he has made a LPAH+W (with the relevant powers

Churches Together Walk of Witness

Although a dull and overcast day, it did not stop the annual Good Friday Walk of Witness by members from the North Walsham Churches Together.

Starting off from the market cross, the Cross was carried around the town stopping at various places for a short passage from the bible which was read by members of the different churches.

given) and the attorney (acting in their best interests and as their proxy) refuses such treatment. If a clinician treats a patient against such a decision, and if that decision is known about by the clinician, it is a criminal offence.

Sensitive consultation with and support of families about DNR prevents trauma and distrust of the medical system, thereby enabling the patient to have a ‘good death’.

The Tiger who came to tea at Swanton Abbott Pre-School

‘The Tiger who came to Tea’, an all-time children’s favourite book, was the topic at Swanton Abbott Pre-school last month.

The children learnt that tigers are members of the cat family and they have stripes which led to lots of discussions about patterns resulting in various drawings and collages. To end the week the children made invitations inviting their families to come to our ‘Tea Party’. Pre-school was overflowing with icing sugar and jam on the morning of the tea party as the children eagerly decorated tables, iced buns and prepared sandwiches.

The families arrived, the story was read and the food was served, when all of a sudden there was a knock at the door, “I wonder who that could be?!” the children called out, when in came the tiger to join us for tea!

Cantamus May Concerts

Evening concert Friday 25 May at 7pm, Thorpe Market Church, NR11 8UA Evening concert Saturday 26 May at 7pm, West Runton Church, NR27 9QT conducted by Philip Adams, piano accompaniment by Michael Finnissy

Following on from the success of the most recent national CoMA concert (Contemporary Music for All) at West Runton Church, in spite of the March snow drifts, Cantamus will be performing a new repertoire of music ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ by Sir Edward Elgar, one of the greatest and best known English composers, and ‘Folk-Song Settings’ by Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century.

Percy Grainger’s folk song settings, mostly from Lincolnshire, are some of the most sensitive and beautiful ever written. Grainger collected with wax-cylinder recording equipment, and always credited the singers in published copies. The English Folk Song and Dance Society initially refused to house this material, and it was deposited in the Library of Congress in Washington USA. Fortunately, copies are now held by the British Library in London.

The folksong elements in Elgar’s 'From the Bavarian Highlands’ are made up, but no less enchanting. Later on Elgar’s celebration of England, although held to be somewhat jingoistic, is actually melancholic and equivocal. We must remember that Elgar’s genius was first recognised in Germany, perhaps in the Bavarian Highlands!

Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope. Those wishing to join the choir are welcome to get in touch. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30pm - 9.30pm.

The awards will be hosted on Cromer Pier on 17 May. The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth.

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, said “The fact that winners from around the country will visit Cromer is a reflection of the high standards delivered across North Norfolk’s beaches.”

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “The Blue Flag is the quality mark for our beaches and they mean that those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.

Allison Ogden-Newton, Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, said “Every year the launch of our Blue Flag and Seaside Awards is a chance to celebrate the fantastic beaches around our coastline that are so loved by locals and the millions of tourists who visit them each year.

“We are delighted to be holding this year’s celebration event in Cromer and would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for hosting it.”

“I’m delighted that Cromer will host the Keep Britain Tidy awards event.”

Living History at Blickling - speakers Liz and Bob Scott

Liz and Bob commenced their presentation in costume and enhanced it with slides of significant owners and wives of Blickling Hall.

many countries. He never married and was the first person to persuade the government to accept both the house plus the estate in lieu of death duties by bequeathing it to the National Trust.

Lady Aster, a frequent visitor, was the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons.

Bob began by entering dressed in a morning suit, complete with white gloves, and explained he was the butler to Lord Lothian and said his Lordship was away. He then asked if anybody had seen the maid because he can never find her.

Liz then entered, said she was Cathleen Grover, and spoke with a very broad Norfolk accent, mispronouncing many words, with a funny turn of phrase. She then asked if any of the ladies had a footman because they are very useful. She went on to say that the house was looking for a footman - he had to be strong and able to run fast, because they had to help the ladies into the coach which moved off immediately afterwards, necessitating him to run fast to catch up with the coach. She asked for a volunteer (me) and felt the calves of my legs, declaring me suitable.

My duty was to carry the food to the dining room, I had to whistle all the time - this was to ensure that I didn’t steal the food en route - his lordship liked Chicken Maryland and profiteroles.

Lady Constance was a very keen garden designer and was responsible for laying out the lovely Parterre garden at the side of the house.

At this stage Liz took off her maid’s cap and became her very knowledgeable self. She explained who the various owners of Blickling were and what their role was in improving the Hall including rebuilding it. She also explained their relationship, titles and names.

The last Lord Lothian, the 11th Marques Robert Kerr, lived in the house. He was a diplomat who entertained very distinguished persons from

Henrietta Howard obtained a legal separation form her husband the Earl of Buckingham who had many mistresses and didn’t spend much time at Blickling. The 6th Lord Lothians’ daughters, Mary Anne and Caroline, built the Mausoleum and are interred there, together with their father, Sir Henry Hobart.

Liz ended her presentation by showing a photograph of herself with the real Cathleen Grover nee Watts, who is 97 and still has a good memory. She showed us a picture of a chest of drawers that is really a cover for a modern electric cooker. She also spoke about Nelson cakes which were made by the kitchen staff from food leftovers for themselves. Mike Sothcott

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie gets lots of calls from people either hoping to give a cat a new home or needing their cat to come into care. She also receives lots from people looking for advice some of which she cannot help with as the person really needs to speak to someone in the veterinary world. At this time of year Stephanie knows from previous years that she MOTOR SERVICES LIMITED will get a lot more calls than usual relating to www.kellyclarkemotorservices.co.uk missing cats. Most of these calls will relate to young cats and kittens that have not been neutered. The unneutered females start to call and the unneutered males will travel many miles to find a mate. Often the callers will be unaware that kittens can reach sexual maturity and breed from four months old, not ideal as the kittens have not finished growing themselves. Even cats that have only known a life indoors will take any opportunity

offered to escape to find a mate. Although some do return home, this is not always the case, as cats can become disorientated and lose their bearings and often end up as strays needing to be taken into care. This may be as a heavily pregnant young female, a young mum with kittens or a young male many miles from his original home. Unless they have been micro chipped there is very little chance of us being able to find the original owner who will always wonder what happened to their young cat. This is one of the reasons we do promote Taz, a lovely young cat neutering and why we are only too happy to help who loves a fuss those on low incomes and benefits with the cost of the operation with one of the vets we use and have accounts with.

Stephanie will also advise the benefits of having a cat/kitten neutered to avoid the heartache of worrying what has happened to a much loved member of the family. The males are less likely to roam, thus reducing the risk of a car accident, less likely to fight, which reduces the risk of them getting injured or contracting a serious disease, less likely to spray or develop tumours of the testicles and they will make better pets, being more likely to be homebodies. Benefits for the females are not becoming pregnant, the cat will not wail and call every three weeks, is less likely to contract diseases spread by bites and mating behaviour and will not develop cancer of the ovaries or uterus. There is also a reduced risk of developing mammary cancer.

Every year we take in lots of young cats that have lost their way but we also receive calls from owners who had not realised that their female kitten could get pregnant at such a young age, and have not recognised the significance of its strange behaviour, when it is calling. Any kittens born as a consequence may come into care for re-homing, be checked by our vets, vaccinated, chipped, treated for fleas and worms and given a voucher to be neutered when old enough and we will help with getting the mother neutered.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Hedgehog Haven

Many thanks to everyone who came to visit us over Easter at North Walsham Garden Centre. It is nice to know so many people are interested in the decline of hedgehogs and what can be done to help them survive. Rory (pictured) was a star. He came to me in October as a hoglet so is used to being handled. Unfortunately, he has a deformed front leg, so couldn't cope in the wild so it is ok for him to be handled. The ones that are due for release, I tend to do everything they need for their well-being, but try to have as little contact as possible so their transition back into the wild works. Born free, release free.

you feel like you are down at your local watching the best band that has ever played there.

Returning for its 5th year, the festival that has been dubbed ‘North Norfolk’s friendliest event’, is returning home to the Village of Trunch, the place where it all started.

Trunchonbury opens at 12pm on Friday 24 August and closes at 10pm on Sunday 26 August.

Tucked away in a pretty paddock, the theme of this year’s festival is the ‘Wizard of Oz’ and the Trunchonbury team really do believe ‘There Is No Place Like Home’.

Geared very much towards entertainment for the whole family, the festival has plenty for everyone. On the main stage are some of the finest bands from around the region and a few showstoppers from further afield. Headlining on Friday are Backbeat Soundsystem, an 8 piece Funk Reggae outfit from Cornwall. On Saturday, the stage will once again bounce along to the Jive crafted stylings of Mr Bruce and DJ Chucks AKA The Correspondents and Sunday night will see the return of one of the Trunchonbury family as local musician Wayne Beauchamp and Those Deadbeat Cats bring the festival to a final crescendo. Definitely not to be missed there are plans afoot to get the whole arena dancing to the bands classic take on traditional and not so classic Rock‘n’Roll.

Elsewhere in the festival you will find the JR’s Children’s field with a huge array of events taking place throughout the day and into the early evening. Story-telling, crafting, creepy crawlies, discos and tons more for toddlers upwards. There’s even an area for the really tiny ones to enjoy themselves, all within sight of the main stage, so you won’t miss any of the bands as your young ones play.

The Disco Shed is back for miniscule discos, ‘Blakeys’ the Bus that is really a Bar will be open for business every day and there’s a wide selection of food stalls in the onsite village that cater for even the pickiest of eaters. You’ll even be able to get a morning Bacon Butty with a cup of tea from stall in the campsite. In the Acoustic tent some unbelievably talented acts will once again grace the stage and on Sunday, the mighty BBC Introducing will stage a takeover, bringing yet more unmissable talent to the field. Headlining this year are incredible Fairgreen Ceilidh Band on Friday, the blindingly good Swing Caravan on Saturday and the frenzy that is the Spanish guitars of De Fuego on Sunday. And this year, we are introducing the Busk Stop. Situated just outside the main gate it will be a chance to hear some of the bands who have play in the acoustic stage, and maybe even some from the main stage, as they return to their busking roots. As with last year, you will also find within the tent the Real Ale and Cider Bar, guaranteed to make

►Funday Paul Oakes, Colin Jeary, Bob Wright ◄ Hedgehog Haven Paul Oakes, Marion Grimes, Bob Wright

The new amateur radio licensee Giles, 12 years old, a student at Cromer Academy gained his Foundation licence which is the first step to becoming a full licence holder and has been given the amateur radio call sign M6YGK. This allows him to ‘go on air’ with limited use of the amateur bands in the UK. There are three steps to gaining a full licence in the UK - Foundation licence, Intermediate and Advanced, which will then give the radio enthusiast full use of all the UK allocated bands.

►North Walsham Play Paul Oakes, Matt Smith, Bob Wright

◄ Royal British Legion Bob Wright, Colin Chambers, Paul Oakes

Club chairman Steve M0HET presents Giles M6YGK with his Foundation licence at our regular monthly club meeting at the Ex- Serviceman's club in Aylsham.

The educational outreach project run by the Bittern DX group, sponsored by the Lottery grant fund, is aimed at the general public but primarily youngsters, to show them the amazing things that amateurs can do with the radio and to encourage them to look at electronics engineering and space exploration as a career for the future.

Norfolk's canal included in national boating challenge

Restoration of a unique Norfolk canal has been so successful that it has been included in a national challenge for boat users. Enthusiasts from all over England and Wales are set to navigate the upper section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal in a bid to gain a new Inland Waterways Association (IWA) award.

The IWA, a charity which works to protect and restore the country's 6,500 miles of canals and rivers, has included a one-mile section, from Ebridge Mill pond to Bacton Wood lock, in its Silver Propellor challenge, aimed at encouraging members to explore some of the country's lesser-known waterways.

"The biggest reward for all our volunteers’ work in opening up this section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal is to see boats using it. We are thrilled that our local Norfolk canal has been included in this national scheme," said Mr Cane. ●

Trust volunteers have been working to restore the upper canal with Laurie Ashton's Old Canal Company, which owns the waterway between Ebridge lock and Swafield. In January a successful trial re-watering was carried out on a stretch between Pigneys Wood and Bacton Wood lock which had been dry for at least half a century.

Noninvasive Face Lifting

“I don’t want a facelift, but can’t you just tighten up some of this saggy skin a little?” It is a question asked in aesthetic practices around the world. With new advances in technology and treatment protocols, answers are shifting from a tentative “maybe” to a qualified “yes.”

“My patients love that they can have a treatment in the morning and attend a social function in the evening with no trace of having had a medical procedure—just nicer looking skin.” Says Dr Sanjay Gheyi, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

Gravity wins out over time and with facial volume loss, untreated skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity. Advancements in technology have made it possible to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging without undergoing surgery. “This precision contributes to both safety and effectiveness, and because this is accomplished without damaging the superficial layers of skin, patients experience no down time.” Not only do we help wrinkling, it also decreases pore size, brings out a better texture, and a better appearance to the skin. Unlike lasers, it can be used on all skin colours, even very dark skin.

“Very elderly patients with severe sagging and wrinkles are, in general, suboptimal candidates for the modest to moderate improvement possible with noninvasive tightening devices,” says Dr. Gheyi. “Younger to middle-aged patients with early laxity and wrinkles are better candidates.” However skin condition can be a better indicator than age. “If the skin is in good condition, even older patients will show visible improvement,” he says.

We use radiofrequency and ultrasound waves for no-downtime rejuvenation treatment, which stimulates the fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Patients love the treatments because they are comfortable

without pain medication or numbing creams. With this technique, patients see some instant improvement with increased collagen regeneration and skin firmness that becomes visible over the next 3 to 4 months and continues for up to 12 months.

It can tighten loose skin on any area of the body such as tummy and arms and can be used with ultrasound to reduce areas of localized fat that cannot be improved with diet or exercise.

So what are the alternatives - We offer full range of services from non-invasive treatments and liquid facelifts to cosmetic surgery but most people today want natural results without going under the knife. We have another innovative treatment called a 3-D Facelift where we use a patients own fat cells to provide facial volume and lifting. More on that in our next article.

North Walsham Town Football Club – The Angels

Defeats in four of their last five games has left North Walsham`s 1st team needing points to avoid the relegation zone in Division 1 of the Anglian Combination League, not helped by a 7-1 defeat by high flying Munford on Easter Saturday - this after a 0-0 draw at home on the previous Tuesday night at Greens Road against Bungay Town.

Town`s Reserves team continue to battle in Division 4 of the Anglian Comb, returning to Greens Road with a point from Heacham after a 3-3 draw.

The Angels A team match away to local rivals Aylsham A was cancelled. The Veterans and North Walsham`s Youth teams were inactive during the Easter holiday weekend.

North Walsham Town F.C would again like to express its thanks to everyone who came along to the fund raising event at the Black Swan for the defibrillator and for outstanding support shown by the local community. We thank you - without everyone`s support this would In their only game since the last article the Vikings overwhelmed already relegated Letchworth 65 - 0 at Scottow, Dan Smith (pictured) getting a hat trick of tries. With three games left the Vikings were sixth which realistically is as high as they can hope to finish. Their remaining fixtures are all tough, with that at Old Priorians (seventh with three fewer points) on 7 April pivotal in deciding their final position.

Another narrow defeat for the Raiders, this time at Ipswich YM, means they are fourth in the Eastern Counties Shield with three games left.

The Club are disappointed popular Head of Rugby James Brooks will be leaving in the summer, moving up three tiers to join a National League One side.

"Fundamentally I'm leaving for personal reasons," he explained. "Zoe

have not have be possible.

We are actively looking for those of you who would like to get involved with The Angels. We run six Youth Team`s under 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14s, also four Senior teams 1st, Reserves, A Team and Veterans teams. North Walsham Town is a football club that will continue to grow in the years ahead. We are always looking to recruit new players, coaches, helpers and volunteers. If you like to get involved we would like to hear from you.

The Club would also like to thank those who attended the recent race night at Greens Road in aid of funds to repair the damage caused by recent storms.

We are also looking to recruit a Reserve team Manager for the 2018/19 season and beyond.

If you would like to join The Angels please contact Club Secretary Mr Neil Coop 07771 896902 or via email neiljcoop@btinternet.com or Vice Chairman and Manager of our Under 10`s and 14s Craig Brown 07810 553009. Our U9s manager Mark Alexander can be reached on 07717 534183 and I had our first child last summer and we recently decided that ideally we wanted to be nearer our family and friends in the London area. Then this opportunity to further my career with a London Club came up."

He added "Whoever takes over from me inherits a hard working young squad that is keen to improve collectively. Over the next few years this team will blossom. We are very sad at James' decision but fully understand," said Director of Rugby Al Hepburn. "He has contributed a lot and laid some strong foundations for his successor."

The Vikings final home fixture is this Saturday (14th) when fourth placed Eton Manor visit, with The Raiders also playing at Scottow against Thurston.
