Newly Refurbished at Head's wife with Parkinson's runs for Cancer Research T Headmasters wife Niki Oldroyd 50, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 22 is running the Race for Life for Cancer Research with a team of staff and mums from St Nicholas House School in North Walsham. Niki started running 5 years ago after her Mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the January of 2013. Despite not being a runner and the Parkinson’s making running difficult, she was determined to run the Race for Life and followed the popular NHS Couch to 5k running program. In 2013 running with friends she raised £3000 for Cancer Research.

“Mum died in November 2013 and since then I have run another two races, one 10km (never again) and one 5km. However by 2015 running became impossible - my Parkinson’s was getting progressively worse and I regularly fell at least twice a day and often needed a wheel chair to get around” she says.

In November 2016 Niki underwent pioneering Deep Brain Stimulation surgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurology Lyndsey McVey, Liz Williams, Penny Calvert, in London. Continued on page 4...

Head's wife with Parkinson's runs for Cancer Research

Continued from front cover... In a seven hour operation surgeons implanted an electronic neurostimulator into her chest and connected it via wires under her skin in her neck and into the front of her brain.

“It seemed right to try running again in 2018, five years after Mum died and I have decided to try to run the Race for Life again. Although my implant has meant I no longer fall - and my walking is so much better, my running is not always great with my left leg particularly problematic. I am currently experimenting with a ‘running setting’ and a ‘walking setting’ - ie. different electrical stimulation for each with not much luck but will keep trying”.

Niki has been used to raising money for Early Onset Parkinson’s - she is a co-founder of Parkinsons Ride, a Norwich based charity that helps younger people who find themselves diagnosed with what is traditionally thought of as an old person’s disease. “Every hour someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s and one in twenty of those is under 40. It is a disease that robs the sufferer from the ability to move with symptoms such as rigidity, ‘freezing’, tremor, instability and falls to name a few. It can be devastating to be told that you have an incurable, degenerative disease in the prime of your life and we face much different problems than elderly sufferers”. The Race for Life is taking place on Sunday 13 May at the Norwich Showground. “ I am very proud to be running with a group of staff and mums from St Nicks who have been training since January to run the race - they have been massively supportive and despite actually not liking running very much I am looking forward to it” Niki added. To sponsor Niki and the St Nicholas House team please visit the school Facebook page (St Nicholas House Prep School and Nursery) and follow the link or go to https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/nikis-race-for-life-32

Norfolk town parties for Ethiopia Aylsham Town Hall to host charity fundraiser for Hospice Ethiopia A Norfolk town is getting ready to party in aid of a charity in Ethiopia.

On Saturday 14 July Aylsham Town Hall will host an all-ticket party to raise much needed funds for Hospice Ethiopia. The event includes a buffet dinner, with many ingredients donated by local farmers and suppliers, as well as dancing to a live rock band and a classical musicale by the North Norfolk Ensemble. Sue Mumford, a specialist nurse at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, is chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK. Last year the Norfolk-based charity raised over £30,000 for Hospice Ethiopia, while the Norwich Diocese’s Lent Appeal raised over £40,000 to finance a new vehicle to help deliver aid in Addis Ababa. How did Norfolk become so involved in a charity based thousands of miles away?

“Originally it was about Priscilla Bacon Lodge sending out specialists to train Hospice Ethiopia’s staff in palliative care (care of the dying)” says Sue. “It became clear that the charity desperately needed funding. It gets no money from the

Ethiopian government and grants from other charities were getting increasingly harder to source. Hospice Ethiopia is bringing hope to hundreds of desperate people. But even more important, is has become a centre of excellence in Ethiopia and trains hundreds of people to deliver care - so its work is reaching thousands. “It only needs about £70,000 a year so survive – so every penny we can raise makes a real difference. But with more funds they can achieve more. For example, the vehicle funded by the Lent Appeal will allow Hospice Ethiopia to care for many more patients in their own homes.”

Events like the Aylsham Party are a vital part of Hospice Ethiopia UK’s fund raising. “It will be a super night, with a fabulous buffet meal, a bar, and lots of entertainment, including a great live band, the Gentleman Gits, who are sure to get everyone up on the dance floor,” says Sue. “The fact that so many local people help us with donations of food and services is a huge bonus – it means we can keep ticket prices low,

attract lots of people and make as much money for Hospice Ethiopia as possible.” Tickets for the Aylsham Party are £20, or £15 if bought before 1 June. For information contact Clare Glenn on 01263 734853, email info@hospiceethiopia.org.uk or visit www.hospiceethiopia.org.uk. Tickets available from Barnwells in Aylsham Market Square.

Who’s the Daddy?

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

The High Court has ordered the daughter of a deceased man to be DNA-tested to verify that she is in fact his biological daughter.

Colin Birtles died intestate, i.e. without having made a Will, in 2013, leaving a terraced house in Oldham and a small amount of cash. He had two daughters, Lorraine and Janice, born in the

early 1960s to his late ex-wife Veronica.

Lorraine had lived in Australia for many years. Janice stayed in England. When her father died she obtained from the Probate Court a Grant to administer his estate.

When Lorraine heard of this, she issued a claim for Revocation of Janice’s Grant of Administration, as she wanted to administer her father’s estate herself. She also asked the Court to issue a Declaration that Janice was not entitled to any part of the estate and alleged that Janice was not in fact Colin’s biological daughter. Lorraine gathered together a number of witness statements from third parties to the effect that Colin had said as much to several people during his lifetime.

Lorraine is asking the Court to order that Janice submits to a DNA test, to produce scientific evidence whether Colin was Janice’s father. Lorraine would be DNA tested too. A niece who had nothing to do with the dispute would also be tested as a ‘control’. Janice refused to agree to the DNA test. She dismissed the allegations of her ‘irregular parentage’ as ‘nothing but gossip and hearsay’. Janice said that not only was her mother married to Colin at her birth, but that her birth certificate names Colin as her father, creating a common law presumption that he was her father. Janice said that, after her parents divorced, Colin paid maintenance in her respect until she was 16.

Lorraine’s request for a Court Order forcing Janice to take the DNA test was

granted by the Judge who accepted that there were three questions to be decided. These were: first, whether the DNA test would be sufficiently accurate; secondly, whether the Court had authority to make the Order; and, thirdly, if the answer was ‘yes’ to both, whether the Court ought to make the Order in this case. After taking extra evidence regarding the human rights aspects of the case, the Judge agreed to grant the Order for DNA testing and accepted that the Court had inherent jurisdiction to do so.

The Judge made the following points: A DNA test requires merely a saliva sample by mouth, rather like a Search Order for other purposes, and so is not invasive. The test produces a ‘robust conclusion’ one way or the other. Failure to give consent to the DNA testing might amount to Contempt of Court and the Court could also draw an adverse inference against Janice’s case if she refused.

The lessons we learn from this case are not just the obvious human ones but of the benefits of making a Will, especially where one’s family situation is less than straight-forward. Library celebrates 50th with week of events North Walsham Library is ready to mark its 50th anniversary with a week of special events, children’s activities and celebrations. And staff are keen to hear from any library users who have special memories of the building over the past half-century. The distinctive building on New Road, in the shape of an eight-pointed star, cost £14,274 and was officially opened on 23 May 1968. It replaced a library service which had operated for many years in a former billiards room behind the King’s Arms pub in the town centre.

had previously operated from Norwich.

Singers and musicians from the local folk scene will perform traditional ballads, broadsides and tunes as well as shanties, monologues, and contemporary poems and songs. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, an update on two of the cats mentioned last time. Dixie has now had a dental and, apart from the broken tooth, once under the anaesthetic it was obvious several other teeth also needed to be removed. She is now minus 10 teeth in total and has recovered well from her operation. This very friendly girl is now up for adoption.

Mr Pastry has also been in the wars as he had a serious round worm problem resulting in sickness and diarrhoea. A few days on special food for sensitive stomachs and treatment for the worms, put him on the road to recovery. Mr Pastry was very nervous when he first came in and we believe he may have been ill-treated in the past. He has responded well to the gentle care he has received since joining us and now looks forward to a cuddle from his carers. A new arrival last week was Connor who has come into care via our vets. His owner had given him to a friend when she became too ill to look after him. Unfortunately, this was not the best decision she made at the time as, when he broke his leg, it was a neighbour of the friend who took him to the vets for treatment. We are not sure whether or not he had been in an accident or been kicked but, as the original owner had not formally handed him over to the friend, she was able to sign him over to us. He was in a great deal of pain so appointments were rearranged to enable David (our vet) to operate on him that afternoon. He has now joined us and will be on cage rest for several weeks before we can put him up for adoption.

Plans are now in progress for our Spring Sale, which is slightly later this year. As well as the usual Cats Protection goods, Raffle, Tombola, Bric-aBrac, Books etc, Bren and Jenny have been making lots of lovely new things to sell and Andrea has been busy toiling over a hot stove making some of her lovely cakes, etc. We hope our friends and supporters will be able to join us on 26 May in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham from 9.30am to 12.30pm If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). New beach litter boards will help marine and coastal environment

Five new #2minutebeachclean boards for North Norfolk The number of #2minutebeachclean boards along the North Norfolk coast has more than doubled. Five new boards, which encourage people to spend 2 (or more) minutes picking up marine litter and plastic pollution, are being introduced at Walcott, Cromer West, East Runton, Sheringham East and Sheringham West. The boards are sponsored by North Norfolk District Council and each has a custodian who looks after it day to day.

The custodians of the new boards are the Kingfisher Café in Walcott, the Reef Stop Café in Cromer, NCI Coastwatch at East Runton, The Mo in Sheringham and the RNLI in Sheringham. The new arrivals join four existing boards which have been operating previously at West Runton, Cromer East, Mundesley and Sea Palling. These are funded by a combination of businesses, charities, NNDC and other authorities. They also have custodians.

The stated aim of the #2minutebeachclean campaign, which has a strong worldwide social media presence, is “We believe that every piece of litter removed from the beach matters. So it doesn’t matter if you do 2 minutes or 30. Each and every piece of marine plastic removed from the beach is a piece that will no longer go on to kill.”

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Conservative Group Leader, said “The idea behind these boards is simple and it is very straightforward for people to take part. But despite its simplicity, the impact is enormous both in terms of keeping individual beaches cleaner and showing that individual people can have a real impact on such an important problem.” Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Liberal Democrat Group Leader at North Norfolk District Council, said the North Norfolk element of #2minutebeachclean had started at West Runton and had proved a “fantastic initiative”.

“Dog walkers, and families in particular, have really embraced the project, with some groups turning it into a new beach activity when they visit.

“This enthusiasm for helping to clean up our beautiful natural environment has led to some environmental inspection ratings of zero litter on the beach. So I am delighted to see it rolled out to new areas.”

Treatments to get you ready for summer Summer is round the corner and the sooner we start to prepare for it, the more time we have to show results. Here is a selection of our treatments that you can benefit from. Our therapists offer treatments that can be nice and relaxing experiences and do not cost a lot.

FACE - Why not book a diamond microdermabrasion and combine it with a gentle chemical peel and cool light for a glowing skin before your holiday? This will give you a well deserved ‘me time’, a bit of pampering and also benefit your skin health. If you wish to take the next step- a laser facial may just be the thing you need for skin toning and brightening. Further up the scale are our laser resurfacing treatments that do require a little recovery time in exchange for better, more visible results or to address specific skin concerns such as acne scars or lines and wrinkles. Of-course we are experts in natural looking injectable treatments and fillers carried out in a safe and comfortable manner. If it is a major change you are after- a wide range of cosmetic surgical treatments are also available.

VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS - Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone. Today non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated its guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body. SAFE AND EFFECTIVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND TATTOO REMOVAL FOR ALL SKIN TyPES - Why it is a great idea to see us. When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the Wild West in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines. As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine, which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety. We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair

and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients with polycystic ovaries. Thanks to our proven gold-standard lasers and extensive experience we are able to treat every skin type- from very fair to dark skin patients. FAT AND CELLULITE REDUCTION - This is the perfect time to consider laser liposuction for reducing unwanted areas of fat and stubborn cellulite. The procedure is carried out purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in, walk-out basis and most patients are recovered by 3-5 days. Medically supervised weight loss treatments and non-surgical body contouring are also available.

REDUCE ExCESSIVE UNDERARM SWEATING - Higher temperatures mean worsening of sweating issues for some of us. If you suffer from increased underarm sweating, worry about sweating through your clothes, work in close contact with others or in hot conditions or have to make public presentations then you may consider treatment. We offer injectable treatments and also revolutionary laser sweat reduction procedure to destroy sweat glands. Did you know we can remove unsightly moles and blemishes without the knife? We offer treatment options for a variety of conditions so check our website out for more information at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737.

What did you do this weekend? Cadets from 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron, Air Training Corps had a great weekend last month at the Air Training Corps Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Field Competition.

mile WARMA (Walking and Road Marching Association) walk. Two teams of cadets from Norfolk and Suffolk entered and raced against other cadet and regular forces' teams. Luca's team were only over taken in the last 5Km by a team from the regular army. They finished well ahead of the other cadet teams.

Teams from nearly 30 squadrons in Norfolk and Suffolk met in Thetford to compete in several events including first aid, clay pigeon shooting, archery, raft building, orienteering, and aircraft recognition.

The North Walsham team, led by Cadet Sgt Elisha Drake leading 2110 Sergeant Elisha Drake (17) did well in Sqn in the Vehicle Pull Event The WARMA march is a all the events whilst several other cadets required prerequisite for the provided essential support to the event by four day 100 mile Nijmegen march later in the year, operating the radio net. North Walsham Live Aid 2018 A single Les Paul guitar sits on an empty stage waiting for the start of the 2018 North Walsham Live Aid event. The guitar was owned by the late Kevin Dando, a much loved local singer/guitarist in whose memory the event was dedicated. And what a night it was.

A great line up of local bands pounded out rock and blues until 1am Sunday morning to a sell-out crowd at North Walsham Community Centre on Saturday 21 April. Brilliant local young rockers ‘Blackjack’ were followed by local favourites the brilliant rock and blues trio, ‘Egypt’ with solo artist Curtis Cronin keeping the music flowing from the acoustic stage between main stage bands.

staff and committee members. If interested in joining, North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at Squadron Headquarters, North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm. More information about the RAF Air Cadets can be found at www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets or by visiting the Squadron on a parade evening.

‘Raw Edge’ with singer Billy Batchelor, who holds the distinction of having appeared on every Live Aid event since the beginning, including the first in 1985, rocked the evening until the famous rock memorabilia auction. Thirty two lots of signed or collectable items were featured including a Stratocaster style guitar with Pink Floyd design signed by drummer Nick Mason which raised ÂŁ1750. All the items and history can be found on the website www.northwalshamliveaid.co.uk.

During the auction, organiser Barry Holden was presented with a signed Rod Stewart item by Billy Batchelor in recognition of 14 years of Live Aid, as he is handing over the organisation this year, concentrating solely on the auction for future years. The organisation has this year reached £100,000, raised over the years to help local children’s charities.

Following the auction, nostalgia reigned with a brilliant set from Blondie tribute band ‘Parallel Times’ and the evening was brought to its climax with a feast of rock and blues from the legendary ‘Buster James Band’.

At the close of the evening, Barry thanked everyone for their support over the years, all the bands that play for free, Paul Hagon supplying PA and lighting, the hard-working bar staff and all those that come together on the night for the countless support jobs, including Chris (‘her indoors’) for her support and patience. It is anticipated that ÂŁ10,000 has been raised for the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital in Norwich. Details of the presentation and how the money is to be spent will follow.

The event will continue and will be organised in future by Robin and Rebecca Woods of the Music Hut in North Walsham. &RQVHUYDWRU\ WRR KRW LQ VXPPHU WRR 7UDQVIRUP LW LQWR DQ H[WHQVLRQ ZLWK R /X[XU\ /LYLQJ 6SDFHV

“We were able to celebrate with young people and their parents and grandparents, and Scout Leaders from across Norfolk attending, not just from the Broads area but from Norwich, north Norfolk and the west of the county” writes Lorraine Henriksen, District Secretary of North East Norfolk District Scout Council.

March to High School Playing Field

“We marched from Stalham Academy (Junior) School to Stalham High School’s playing field, and back again.

“During the parade to the High School, the formal salute was taken by North East Norfolk District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen, accompanied on the dais by Dr Duncan Edmonds, current Chairman of Stalham Town Council, Mrs Betty Jackson, North East Norfolk District Vice-President and also Councillor Richard Shepherd, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council and Councillor David Ward, Chairman of Broadland District Council.

“The welcome to the gathering at the High School was given by Dr Duncan Edmonds. An ex Scout himself, he donned the traditional Baden-Powell style felt Scout hat that was originally worn by most boy scout troops until the middle of the 1960s – known as a campaign or 'lemon squeezer' hat! “The greeting and Service was then taken forward by Rev Paul Cubitt, District Chaplain & Vicar of St Nicholas North Walsham with support and enthusiastic help from Reverend Richard Jackson from Stalham, using the theme of ‘water’ (particularly relevant to the host Group,1st Stalham Sea Scouts).

St George’s flag presented to West Runton Group

Several young people from Stalham Beavers, Cubs and Scouts participated by offering their reflections and prayers on how water is important in all of our lives.

“Also during the celebration, District Commissioner Paul Henriksen explained the importance of St George’s Day and in particular St George’s Day Awards which were being awarded to Leaders and adults within Scouting at Windsor Castle on St George’s Day”.

From the North East Norfolk District Marylyn Evans from Aylsham received the Silver Wolf - the unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout which is only awarded for service of a most exceptional nature and June Preston from Blakeney received the Bar to the Silver Acorn having worked for scouting for 45 years - the Bar to the Silver Acorn was awarded for similar distinguished service after being awarded the Silver Acorn Silver Acorn Awards seldom awarded for less than 20 years’ service, which was specially distinguished and appreciably better than outstanding, were presented to Andrew Fryer from North Walsham, Chris Nott from West Runton and Michael Cole, also from West Runton.

Mike Cole decided that he would prefer to attend the District event at Stalham with Stalham Brass Band under his home Group, West Runton, rather than the direction of Tim Thirst attending Windsor for his presentation, and District Commissioner Paul Henriksen was delighted to therefore be able to explain that his Group described Michael as “the glue which holds the Group together” - Michael was always dependable and can be relied upon to be present at all important Group events and activities, making sure that such events are arranged and organised to run effectively He is a very practical and helpful Leader who readily sees when something needs doing and will attend to such matters without prompting.

The Young People then participated in their Act of Commitment - a Stalham Beaver gave the Beaver Scout Thought and all of the Beavers joined in the

renewal of the Beaver Promise by ADC Beavers. Alison Smith, a Stalham Cub, read the Cub Scout Law and all of the Cubs joined in the renewal of the Cub Scout Promise, led by ADC Cubs and Andy Harrison, a Stalham Scout, read the Scout Law and all Scouts Formal salute is taken (including ex Scouts and Leaders) joined in renewing the Scout Promise, led by DC Paul Henriksen.

During the singing of the hymn “Michael Row the Boat Ashore”, the collection from members of each Scout Group, together with contributions from the local dignitaries and VIP guests present, was brought forward.

1st Stalham Sea Scouts had nominated the Charity, #smileforharry to receive proceeds from the Celebration - Harry has a tumour in his spinal cord, which after two major operations and 12 months of chemotherapy, is still growing. As the chemotherapy hasn't worked all treatment has stopped. Harry needs life saving Proton Therapy Treatment abroad. His parents urgently need support in raising funds - the cost is going to be around £70,000 https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/protons-for-harry

While we sang the hymn “When the Saints go Marching in” the Colour party gathered and Groups collected their standards and flags and took up position for the National Anthem.

Following this the St George’s Flag, which had been brought to the gathering by last year’s recipients, 1st Blakeney & District Group, was presented by the District Commissioner to 1st West Runton Group who will retain the Flag during the year ahead. Music for the parade, during the celebration service and following the Service was provided by the Stalham Brass Band under the direction of Tim Thirst”.

A Great Blessing

Every month volunteers for the Mundesley Home Library Service deliver books & audio books to those who are unable to get out of their home (whether permanently or temporarily)

One of our regular ‘Books for the Housebound’ ladies is Marie Everton, an amazing lady - very articulate and always cheerful, who agreed to write about her appreciation of this service which she calls “A Great Blessing” She writes “At one time in my life I had to pass the premises of an optician. On his window was written “All work is eye work and eye work is my work.” Eyes are very precious and we tend to take them for granted. Gradually, however, they can create their problems. It was not a loss of sight

but weakness in one eye causing strain and migraine for me. Spectacles with different lenses, magnifying glasses – you name it, most of it we tried. The final was large print books.

librarians pleasant and very helpful.

When physical limitations closed in, the service was continued at my recent Care Home where two lovely ladies come round the fourth Friday in the month with a large box full of them. One of the invaluable assets for me with these books occurs when I am ill, needing to distract the mind, escaping me from the sick room.

I confided in the gentlemanly library deliverer at a previous home that I suspected that the most talented and fluent writers, Churchill I cannot express enough my for example, are not found thanks for this wonderful service Marie with volunteer Chris Whitby in this medium. “Why do and the help it has been for me” getting her delivery you not try talking Marie Everton books?” he asked. That was the breakthrough. When moving to If you would like to use this free service please Mundesley I obtained these audio books from contact the library on 01263 720702 the local library where always I have found the

Cantamus May Concerts

Following on from the success of the most recent national CoMA concert (Contemporary Music for All) at West Runton Church, in spite of the March snow drifts, Cantamus will be performing a new repertoire of music ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ by Sir Edward Elgar, one of the greatest and best known English composers, and ‘Folk-Song Settings’ by Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century on Friday 25 May at Thorpe Market Church at 7pm and Saturday 26 May at 7pm at West Runton Church (conducted by Philip Adams, piano accompaniment by Michael Finnissy). Percy Grainger’s folk song settings, mostly from Lincolnshire, are some of the most sensitive and beautiful ever written. Grainger collected with wax-cylinder recording equipment, and always credited the singers in published copies. The English Folk Song and Dance Society initially refused to house this material, and it was deposited in the Library of Congress in Washington USA. Fortunately, copies are now held by the British Library in London. The folksong elements in Elgar’s 'From the Bavarian Highlands’ are made up, but no less enchanting. Later on Elgar’s celebration of England, although held to be somewhat jingoistic, is actually melancholic and equivocal. We must remember that Elgar’s genius was first recognised in Germany, perhaps in the Bavarian Highlands! Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope. Those wishing to join the choir are welcome to get in touch. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30 – 9.30pm. For further information please contact the Secretary 07944 731081/01263 833847

Medal success for general gymnasts at North Walsham 8 April proved The Club’s general and Gymnastic Club Sunday to be a very busy 12 hour competitive coach Emma

day for coaches Emma Owers and Amy Mann as the Club’s general gymnastic girls and boys ranging from 6 to 13 years took part in three rounds of competitions throughout the day. The competition took place at Easton Gymnastic Club with North Walsham Gymnastics Club taking 36 gymnasts in total to compete at Levels 1 and 2. An impressive 28 medals were won across the different pieces of apparatus with 11 gymnasts qualifying for regional finals being held in Ipswich on Sunday 3 June.

Owers said "Amy and I are proud of every gymnast who took part on the day, for many it was their first time in a competition environment. We will now prep the gymnasts for Regionals in June where we hope to gain further success".

The Club also had a first on Sunday 15 April as competitive gymnast Amy Mann aged 16 competed in Ipswich at National Grade Level 2. Amy is the first gymnast from the Club to compete at a national level and had a successful all round competition.

The Club is now preparing for the County Grades competition at the UEA in Norwich, with many of the Club’s competitive gymnasts currently training and perfecting their routines at the moment, hoping for many medal achievements.

Top quality billiards in North Norfolk

The Alby and District billiards and snooker league, has this season seen success in billiards at both county and national level. In December, 17 year old Harley Dyson of Aylsham won the Norfolk County handicap billiards championship (held at the Maltings club in Kings Lynn) defeating Kings Lynn's Steve Kirk in the final. In April Harley was runner up in the English under 19s championship, losing a close fought final to Kings Lynn's Nathan Boughen. Harley is showing lots of promise for the future having only taken up playing Billiards less than a year ago.

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCE win cup semi from 0-4 down

The second semi-final saw NWSCA’s Andy Beane (22), Tom Baldock-Yaxley (16) and Howard Lupton (15) host Gresham’s School A’s Jonas Lee (0), Robin Thaxter (0) and Haken Bennell (1). Beane and Lupton opened with a 61-57 win against Lee and Bennell before Gresham’s went on to record a 5-1 win – the fourth and fifth battles being decided on the golden point.

The first semi-final of the Handicap Doubles Cup saw NWSCE’s James Lester (28), Andrew Weston (40) and Tom Wardle (42) host Aylsham Albion’s Fletcher Dyson (38), John Hall (40) and Carrie Last (40). The opening three battles were won by Albion but all were very close with two 61-58 wins and the other 61-57. Dyson and Last moved the visitors one win away from a place in the final with a 61-53 win against Weston and Wardle, before the momentum started to swing as NWSCE took the next two wins 61-55 and 61-50. Weston and Wardle won the seventh battle against Dyson and Hall 61-58 to reduce the deficit to 3-4. Dyson and Last had a chance to seal the win in the eighth encounter, but instead Lester and Wardle won it 61-60 on the golden point to set up a deciding ninth battle between Lester and Wardle (35) and Hall and Last (40). The home pair won 61-51 to complete NWSCE’s comeback – from 0-4 down they won the tie 5-4.

The same NWSCA trio were also in action in the Premier Division as they hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner. Following two opening wins for the hosts in straight, there was a run of three five set victories for them as Baldock-Yaxley beat Wilson 11-6, 3-11, 11-6, 12-14, 11-6 and Warner took both Lupton and Beane the distance – the latter coming back from two down. It was Warner who took Backhander’s only point as he beat Baldock-Yaxley 11-4, 11-9, 11-8. De Neve picked up a set from

A poor performance in their last League game of the season saw the Vikings lose 46 -7 at third placed Colchester, by far their biggest defeat of the campaign. With 14 wins and two draws they finished sixth in London One North, two down on last year. Brentwood were Champions, with Chingford also promoted. The Raiders finished fourth in Eastern Counties One.

Plenty of action for the Youth and Minis. The Under 14s, 15s & 16s were all due to take part in various Finals at Norfolk's Big Rugby Weekend on 6 May, the Vikings and Raiders playing in the Senior Cup and Bowl Finals the previous day. Meanwhile, nearly 900 seven to twelve year olds descended on Scottow for the Annual Minis Festival (pictured), some 80 teams playing 280

The final match in the Second Division saw Tatiana Schreibee make her League debut as she joined Gudi Scham and John Harris as NWSCF hosted Mundesley C for whom Dave Williams was joined by Ben Thomson and Dave Kewell (both playing up). Each of the visiting trio took a brace as Mundesley won 7-3 with Scham taking a maximum for the hosts including five set wins against both Williams and Kewell. The division ended in dramatic style – after sixteen matches each both Cromer Nomads and Sheringham LCC Dolphins finished on 147 points meaning a potential play-off match to determine the title. NWSCF finished the season in sixth position – just two points behind LCC Starfish.
