Dementia Action Week 2018 - Taking action for a dementia friendly Norfolk
Monday 21st May 2018 marks the start of Dementia Action Week in the UK. An initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.
As a firm, we have made a number of pledges to play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia. We are a member of the Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance and hold regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it's like to live with dementia and to help create a dementia friendly community. All of our lawyers are 'dementia friends' and we are proud to be a dementia friendly business.
One of the common questions we regularly face as Solicitors is what can an individual, who has been diagnosed with dementia, do in terms getting their legal affairs in order. The answer to this is simple, if you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia, it is important to consider whether two documents are in place and up-to-date – a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney.
What is a Will? A Will is a legal document that sets forth your wishes regarding the distribution of your Estate. It allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions upon death and choose who they are bequeathed to.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney ("LPA")? Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place is just as important as having a Will. There are two different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). One relates to 'Property and Financial Affairs' and the other relates to 'Health and Welfare'. Both Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)
North Walsham Community Shop - May grants
appoint trusted people (attorneys) to act on a person's behalf should they lose the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves regarding financial matters or general welfare. It therefore helps to give you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you ever become unable to make decisions for yourself.
I have a diagnosis of Dementia - can I still make these documents? There is a common misconception that a diagnosis of dementia prevents you from making or amending these documents, however, this is not the case. The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions.
When we meet to take the initial instructions, the solicitor can assess whether the person has sufficient capacity to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Will. If the solicitor has any concerns about a person's capacity they can ask the person's GP to assist. Therefore, just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make these documents. However, it is important to bear in mind that time is of the essence and it is sensible to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for capacity.

Meet the Hansells team in North Walsham
My whole career to date has been spent working for Hansells in the beautiful location of Cathedral Close, Norwich, writes Shelyna Mariscal. Brian gave his talk with the aid of slide photographs and his own voice over. He named many people shown in the slides and described where the buildings stood, all of which made his talk come alive, writes Mike Sothcott. The first slide was of The Oaks House built in 1935 which stood in the park approximately where the Post Office is now. This was followed by the Market Cross, and several slides of Mr A Walker’s cycle shop, with two cars outside. Next was various views of Black Cat Garage, including the showroom and the dance hall decorated for a wedding breakfast. The Police Station followed, showing the two houses which stood where the present station was, one for the Inspector and the other for the Sergeant, now superseded by the recently completed building which has incorporated the Magistrates Court. Youngman’s Post Mill which stood on the corner of Yarmouth and Thirlby Roads, and the nearby Memorial Hospital including the operating theatre, equipment and nurses, also a guard supervising some prisoners of war. Next the ‘two up two down’ cottage in the town where he lived as a boy and the Market Place which was kept clean by two men with a sturdy wheelbarrow filled with water and who flushed the drains out. King George VI Jubilee celebrations in the Market Place, followed by a static water tank which stood outside Waterloo House during WWII, coupled with the old fire pump which now resides in the Heritage Centre. A grand display of meat outside the butcher’s shop, followed by the town dustmen, Halet’s fish and chip shop, Mr D M Amiss’ printing shop, the Town Cryer, and the Co-op store, now Chubby Panda restaurant. Finally, the Beechwood Hotel, the Steam Laundry, which has not long ago been demolished, Vicarage Street before demolition took place and The Cockerel tea rooms. The next meeting will be a tour of North Walsham’s Saint Nicholas Parish Church. If any one has any items of interest relating to North Walsham, be it objects, such as tools, household and other implements, harness, documents, anniversary cards etc which they would like to donate to the Heritage Centre in Vicarage Street, they will be gratefully received by the staff who will be in attendance on Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm each week.

Dear Margaret,
I wish to express my appreciation to the young man who, along with his friend, helped me two or three weeks ago out of a predicament. My mobility scooter developed a puncture and they took control of the situation, making it roadworthy, also tailing me home to make sure I arrived safely. I am so grateful, especially as he was enjoying a fish and chip supper with his family. He wouldn’t accept any cash so I have since donated money to charity. Thank you so much! North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Firstly, an update on the cats mentioned last time. Dixie and Mr Pastry have both been reserved and Connor continues to make progress on cage rest.
The kitten season has now arrived and we do have a lovely young mum, Marylou, together with her four kittens who were born in care. At this time of year we usually have a list of people who are waiting for kittens to arrive and, consequently, all four kittens are reserved and will be leaving shortly. Once Marylou has been neutered, blood tested, vaccinated and chipped she will be put up for adoption. She is a lovely friendly little cat and we do not think it will be long before she has a new home. The kittens will also be vaccinated and chipped before leaving and we will pay for them to be neutered at one of the vets we use when they are a little bigger.
Our cats and kittens are lucky as, when they leave for their new homes, we know they have received the very best treatment to ensure they are healthy and remain so. Unless adopted from a charity they are unlikely to have had more than flea and worm treatment. It is therefore important for people to know what to look for when buying a cat or kitten, especially if this is done online. Bright eyes, clean noses and ears are the first things to look for. If a kitten, a fat tummy does not necessarily indicate good health, as it probably has worms and also make sure that its bottom is clean. Check its coat, (which should be nice and shiny), for little black specks, as these will indicate the cat may have fleas. See how it interacts with you and, if timid, appreciate it may take more time to settle and be prepared to allow for this. Don’t just look at the colour of a cat’s coat but take into consideration its character. Be aware that some people charge ridiculous amounts for kittens with certain coloured coats.
You may be looking for a pedigree cat; if so, please read up about the different breeds to ensure the one you choose fits your lifestyle.

Obviously, a pedigree cat costs a lot of money so make sure you go to a reputable breeder who will register the cat with the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy), either as a ‘pet’ or ‘breeding cat’. They will give you papers detailing the cat’s family history. Be aware that, for instance, ‘Rag Doll’ crossed with ‘Maine Coone’ is not a pedigree cat but just a moggy.
Finally check the conditions the cats/kittens have been living in. We do hear some very sad tales from people who contact us for help with the cost of neutering the cats and kittens they have bought.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Hedgehog Haven
In the last few weeks there have been more releases. There has also been three new arrivals.
Nugget was found out during the day and I have discovered that the reason for this is that she is blind.
Derek was heard screaming as he had fallen into an uncovered drain hole. Luckily he is recovering well and will soon be released. Please make sure drain holes are covered - once a hedgehog falls in they cannot get out and can suffer a nasty death by starvation.
Pictured is Humphrey. He was found by the side of the road. He had been hit by a vehicle. I will be taking him to the vets tomorrow to make sure his jaw is not broken as his mouth is sore and he has lost some teeth. He also has a sore nose so is finding breathing difficult. He has managed to eat and drink a small amount and I am supplementing that by syringe feeding watered down meat loaf dog food. I have also put him on a course of antibiotics and given pain relief.
So please when driving especially at dusk look out for hedgehogs wandering seeking food. Thank you

North Walsham People’s Theatre presents another new play … and this time it’s all about lucky balls!
“Life is like the balls… you don’t know when it’s going to be your number and even then it could be too late!”
Theatre returns again to North Walsham town centre at the Pop Up Theatre based at the Black Swan.
Following on from the successful Christmas season, the town’s People’s Theatre Company will be presenting a new play called Bingo Wings, written by its director and producer Joseph Ballard. The play will be presented on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd June at 7.30pm. Bingo Wings is set in a bingo hall, where a handful of women meet every week for their regular game. Each bingo player holds a secret that begins to reveal itself as their usual routine suddenly breaks and they question what it’s like to be approaching middle age, somehow over the hill without ever making it to the top.
for the theatre but also for its writer and director. Joseph, who has written and directed a number of shows locally, says it is much for a drama than a comedy, which has been a trademark of recent shows.
Joseph added “The play has moments of comedy and is set in the lighthearted world of a bingo hall, but there is an underlying dramatic through-line for each character that gradually gets revealed. I’ve been inspired by the stories I hear, from friends and people I work with and we ended up work-shopping those ideas into performance.
I hope the local community will continue to support our theatre venture here in the town. I’m very proud of our past shows and everyone who takes part to create great shows that are presented in our town centre. Profiling our This production is something different, not just town as a vibrant place where things happen for locals and visitors alike.” Local North Walsham residents were absolutely delighted to hear the
Aylsham Road Safety Campaign
news that the North Walsham Community Shop had granted almost £300 to enhance the safety signage encouraging drivers to be more careful on this busy road which has no pavement over most of its length and is the main heavy lorry and bus route into the town.
Recent surveys carried out with the advice and help of the Police, have shown that there is a very high proportion of children using the road accounting for over 30% of pedestrian movements at peak times. There is also evidence of many accidents with damage to property as well personal injury and near misses.
The play will be performed by members of North Walsham People’s Theatre Company, made up of adults from the local area.
The Pop Up Theatre is located at the function hall of the Black Swan, in Black Swan Loke.
The play is suitable for 14+. All tickets are £8 and can be bought in person from the Showcase Gallery, online or by calling 01692 434112. More information about the shows and local classes can be found at www.new-stages.co.uk and from show leaflets, which can be found around town in shops, cafes, the Showcase Gallery and the library.
Plus… The Pop Up People’s Theatre is also hosting the first concert from North Walsham People’s Choir on Sunday 3 June at 6.30pm. Tickets are £5 each. The concert will feature members’ favourite songs and some solo pieces. The choir meets every Tuesday evening and no previous experience is necessary.
Save Our Streets (North Walsham) submitted the bid for the funding and it is intended to complement the forthcoming re-surfacing and removal of the central line by the County Council, together with the more visible and durable pedestrian and road narrows warning signage and a Town Gateway which were part funded by the Town Council out of Partnership Funding
The cheque was handed over on Aylsham Road by Bob Wright and Paul Oakes of the Community Shop to Berni Marfleet from SOS NW along with Sally Stuckey, the Town Mayor and local residents.

Three Cottages Fish Restaurant is celebrating National Fish & Chip Day 2018 in style
Friday 1 June will see people across the country celebrating their love of fish and chips as they come together on National Fish & Chip Day!
Fish and chip lovers in North Norfolk will be joining the rest of the UK to celebrate again and The Three Cottages Fish Restaurant in North Walsham will be marking the occasion by giving the first 200 people to order fish and chips on the day a surprise free gift.
14
Sam, Paula and David at The Three Cottages have been serving fresh fish and chips to the local community and visitors for over 20 years and they are inviting customers to come together to celebrate Britain’s best-loved fast food by tucking in to a portion of sizzling fish and chips.
Sam said “We all agree nothing can beat a portion of delicious freshly fried fish in hot, crispy batter, served with a helping of lip-
smacking chips – the only debate is whether you top it with salt, vinegar, curry sauce, mushy peas or a pickled onion! “So celebrate British fish and chips June by coming down to The Three Cottages in North Walsham on Friday 1 and enjoying a good old-fashioned Friday night fish supper. To mark the day, they will also be raising money for the National Mission for Deep Sea Fishermen running a lucky dip all day for those making a donation to their funds. Visit www.nationalfishandchipday.org.uk to find out more.

The Swallowtail Butterfly
The butterfly was flying on a summer breeze Across Hickling broad to his home in the reeds The water looked clear and inviting to him That he swooped down low, dipping his wings. Oh dear he thought this is a mistake The water’s so deep not I’m caught in the lake. He thought of his mother and sisters three I’ll never get home in time for tea. Then along came some people out for a ride And a kind hand was lowered to lift him inside. A man cupped his hands and the warmth he could feel Made his wings start to flutter, can this be real? With the boat on the jetty moored safe and tight fast People anxiously watched as he lay on the grass, Many eyes looked to see if he could still breathe Thanks goodness he’s safe now it’s such a relief. As soon as he’s rested his wings he will fly Back to his reed home under the sky

Seaside golf club swings into action to drive its future forward
And a familiar face is returning as club professional to join the campaign with Ryan Pudney, who was golf operations manager at the Club from 2010 to 2017, is back as head professional to coach and helping introduce people to the game.
• New tees to create a shorter Academy course suited to beginners, juniors and seniors • Free golf for U-18 junior members signing up for a series of lessons with the pro • Reduced membership fees for new members • New membership rates for five days and nine holes only • New weekly and monthly deals for holidaymakers • Hosting more golf society and corporate groups • Attractive packages for tee and corporate sponsors • An improved shop with new lines • Extra ride-on buggies • Improvements to the practice area • Developing practice and coaching at the driving range on its doorstep
Plans include:

An historic seaside golf club is teeing off into a new era with a bag full of fresh ideas for the future.
Mundesley Golf Club, set on the gorse-gilded hillsides of the holiday resort village, is 117 years old. But officials are looking forward rather than back, swinging into action with a package of initiatives as they mount a membership drive to strengthen the Club for the coming decades.
The Club’s new three-year vision for stability and growth aims to increase membership, and build on the nine-hole course’s flexibility to provide a challenge for golfers of all ages and abilities, said chairman Donald Stuart.
We are fortunate in Norfolk to have a great diversity of wildlife on our doorstep. As Spring warms up the animal activity increases and we see an abundance of animals and insects that have been dormant over the winter. This is also the time of year that snakes, such as adders, come out of hibernation and start to bask in the sun. Whilst these animals are very beautiful they can pose a deadly threat to your pet. Adders are not aggressive animals but will bite if they have no other option - this is often the case when they are trodden on as they have no means of escape and therefore will bite their assailant. This is not good news for your furry friend, and often happens completely by accident, as a dog can
Mr Pudney, returning after a spell at Hunstanton, added “I am delighted to be coming back to a really friendly club at an exciting time, and to be spending more time coaching which is where my heart is.”
be unaware that they have trodden on an adder until it is too late.
So what should you do if your dog is unfortunate enough to be bitten? Phone your local vet immediately as early treatment will reduce the risk of serious infection, organ failure and sometimes death. With our proximity to heathlands and sand dunes we carry a stock of anti-venom at our practice. We have already needed this 3 times in the last month and it has helped to save all of the patients we have treated this year. The symptoms of an adder bite are two puncture wounds where the teeth have penetrated the skin, a marked swelling, typically on the face or legs which can be dark in colour. Dogs may also seem lethargic, drool excessively and have vomiting or diarrhoea.

the club is building a team who are already making a difference so more people can enjoy it.” Committee member Mel Freakley added “The aim is to provide a flexible and bespoke range of membership packages to suit people’s needs.”
Find out more about membership, lessons or corporate opportunities by visiting www.mundesleygolfclub.com or call 01263 720095.
There are ways to protect your dogs, try to avoid walking in open heathlands/sand dunes in the spring months as the snakes are emerging from hibernation and more likely to bite. Whilst you are walking scan the surrounding area for any sign of a snakes and consider keeping dogs on a lead if you do walk in these areas. We see a marked increase in snake bite incidents during the months of April/ May and again in September /October when they become lethargic again. Remember, if you are concerned and think your dog may have been bitten by an adder, act fast and call your vet immediately. Toby Morrell MRCVS, Westover Vets

#Match4Mark2018
This year’s charity football match/fun day #Match4Mark 2018 will take place on 9 June.
Nathan Hill writes “Once again we're trying to raise as much money as we can for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. We're bringing back some of the more popular stalls and activities from the first year (2016) including the bouncy castle, penalty shoot out, cake stall, tombola, name the teddy and face painting but this year we've also got a pub quiz planned for the evening (starting about 6ish once everything has been cleared away) and just before kick off, a group from Marlene's School of Dance (from Cromer) will performing on the pitch.
Once again it will be held at North Walsham Football Club on Greens Road, starting at 1pm and running through to the end of the pub quiz at about 7.30pm.
While last year was more low-key, we hope this year will be much more of a family day out like the first year although we'll probably never get close to beating the amount of people who turned up and how much we raised!”

Gresham’s School A beat NWSCA to win knockout doubles cup
The first of the season’s four concluding Cup finals was the Knockout Doubles as Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Jonas Lee battled NWSCA’s Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Andy Beane and Howard Lupton. The final took place at Trunch Village Hall and was umpired by League President, Peter Ward.
The fourth battle saw Bennell and Lee take on Baldock-Yaxley and Lupton. Baldock-Yaxley just missed a smash at 11-10 in a key third set as Bennell and Lee moved Gresham’s one win from the Cup with an 11-4, 8-11, 13-11, 11-7 win. The fifth contest pitted Thaxter and Lee against Baldock-Yaxley and Beane and like the previous encounter was closer than the opening two battles of the night that had featured Lee as the NWSCA team went for their shots as it had become obvious that they could not tie Lee down. The intensity of the Gresham’s team had also dropped a notch but the match result was never in doubt and the Gresham’s duo sealed a 5-0 win with an 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory.
The opener saw Thaxter and Lee take on BaldockYaxley and Lupton. The North Walsham duo struggled to counteract the hard hitting of Lee. Lupton used every type of spin in his armoury but to no avail as even the shortest serves possible were put away and Gresham’s won in straights sets. It was a very similar scenario in the next battle between the pairings of Bennell and Lee and Beane and Lupton. Once again trying to stop Lee hitting with positional play and spin still proved futile for the NWSCA duo with some almost impossible hits being converted. Gresham’s moved 2-0 ahead with no sets dropped. Baldock-Yaxley and Beane picked up their team’s first set of the night in the third encounter but then could not quite maintain their consistency as they were edged out in four by Thaxter and Bennell.
The final League fixtures have also taken place. At Hunworth, Poacher’s David Foster, Aaron Howell and Chris Fuller hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Howard Lupton and Richard Westgate (playing up) as the teams in second and third place in the Premier Division met. Extremely fast blocking was not quite enough for Beane as Foster came back from two sets to one down to win the opener in five. Lupton gradually wore Howell down in each set to win in

straight and it was straight sets affairs for the next three battles which were all won by the hosts. Fuller took the first two sets against Lupton 11-9, 11-5 before the NWSCA player hit back to take the third 11-9 and forced a decider by taking a very tight fourth 20-18. Lupton led the fifth 4-0, but Fuller won the next eleven points to win an extraordinary contest. Westgate beat Howell in four before consistency gradually turned the tide as Beane beat Fuller from two down – winning a pivotal third 13-11. Foster edged Lupton 17-15 in the third and a four set doubles win for the hosts sealed Poacher’s 7-3 win and the runners-up spot by 12 points. NWSCB finished their season in the top flight in seventh position. NWSCD won the First Division with NWSCC ending mid-table in fifth and NWSCE ending up in eighth place escaping the relegation zone by a single point over Mundesley B while NWSCF finished in sixth position in the Second Division.
