HEY BOY, HEY GIRL! CLASSIC IBIZA REVEAL FULL TRACK LIST FOR Programme: 6pm: car parks and gates open. 8pm: CLOSE TO SELL-OUT BLICKLING CONCERT chill-out set. 9pm: interval with live DJ. 9.30 pm:

With just a couple of months to go until Classic Ibiza with Ministry of Sound brings a taste of the ‘White Isle’ to Blickling Hall, the concert organisers have revealed the track-list which is packed full of some of dance music’s most iconic anthems. Tickets are close to selling out at what promises to be Norfolk’s biggest outdoor celebration of dance this summer. Tickets will not be available on the night, so the concert organisers have advised people to act fast if they want to be certain of getting in. Performed by The Urban Soul Orchestra, DJ Goldierocks and a host of live vocalists, the concert is split into two halves. The evening begins with a chill-out set where people can enjoy their picnics and a drink, or dance along as the sun fades.

The tracks in this half are: Les Nuits (Nightmares on Wax), Moments in Love (Art of Noise), At The River (Groove Armada) Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? (Moby), Unfinished Sympathy (Massive Attack), So Good to Me (Chris Malinchak), Pacific State (808 State), Waves (Mr Probz), Missing (Everything But The Girl), Children (Robert Miles), Barber’s Adagio For Strings (William Orbit) and Something Good (Utah Saints).

The first half is followed by an interval where DJ Goldierocks will turn things up, getting the crowd into the mood before the orchestra and vocalists return to the stage to perform some real dance-floor fillers. The tracks in the second half are: Pjanoo (Eric Prydz), Insomnia (Faithless), Easy/Superstylin’ (Groove

Sia), Don’t You Worry Child (Swedish House Mafia), Levels (Avicii), plus there will be additional tracks by a special guest heritage artist to be revealed on the night!

Five of the tracks were voted for by Classic Ibiza’s Facebook followers over Easter, receiving over 10,000 votes. They are Out of Space, Free, Touch Me ft. Cassandra, Rhythm of the Night and Hey Boy, Hey Girl.

In addition to the amazing tracks and artists, what really sets Classic Ibiza apart is that it is a concert for all the family. Set in the delightful outdoor setting of Blickling Park, concert goers can bring their own food and drink, or take advantage of numerous stalls selling high-quality street-food and refreshments. Car-parking is free (both for coaches and cars), so whether you are six or 60 you are assured of having a fantastic evening in a safe and family-friendly environment. Tickets: Adults: £39.50. Since September last year the Association has been pretty active. We have organised two excellent meals at Mundesley Golf Club and had two quiz evenings with fish and chips, all helping to bring members together, having some fun and raising a few £s for our funds.

This year’s trip to Germany for July has been finalised and on the programme is yet another mountain for us mountaineers to conquer. All in all it looks like a varied programme and as ever, I expect a well organised stay with lovely weather and lots of cake!

During the year a few new members have joined our ranks but to remain ‘healthy’ more are needed. Talking of cake, please pay us a visit on our stand at North Walsham FunDay on 24 June and try out some German recipe cakes.

As ever information is available from Steve on 01953 607119 or Dianne on 01692 402726.

The Bank of Mum and Dad

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

‘The Bank of Mum and Dad' is the 9th biggest mortgage lender in the country. It is estimated to have lent £6.5 billion in 2017.

Parents who help children to buy their first home should be aware of all sorts of repercussions.

An outright gift with no-strings is the easiest, but the question of how one is to be fair to all your children needs careful handling. Your Will may need altering.

Another option is a loan; but is it really to be repaid, and, if so, on what terms? Is interest to be charged? Any commercial mortgage company also lending will insist on having priority to your loan.

Another possibility is that the parents take a share in the home, even if they are not registered as legal owners. Their interest can be evidenced by a deed called a Declaration of Trust.

The recently toughened-up Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is now an important consideration, as an extra 3% higher rate is charged additionally on a second home, or an interest in it. To limit SDLT a gift or loan is better than an equity share.

Many parents are concerned about their child’s marriage or relationship and that the money given might be lost in a messy divorce/break-up. Retaining a loan/share of equity could protect the funds given or lent. A 2017 report showed that the reason why 1 in 3 parents were unwilling to

provide support to married children was due to concerns about the children’s spouse.

This worry can be protected against by the recipient-child entering into a pre-nuptial or cohabitation agreement. Such lack of trust in a family is difficult to bring up in conversation, so it may be easier for the solicitor to raise the safeguard of a pre-nuptial agreement (or be blamed for doing so) to maintain a happy family. A pre-nup could perhaps be a prerequisite of the gift. If the child is already married a post-nuptial agreement (post-nup) can achieve the same result.

If the loan is never intended to be repaid, this route can be good asset protection, but bad tax-planning. The advantage of a gift is that it sets the ‘7-year clock’ running for Inheritance Tax (“IHT”). For Capital Gains Tax the child will get full main residence relief if they own the whole property, whether funded by a gift or a loan. If the parent holds a share of the house, they will have to pay full CGT on their share if they later sell or give it.

Helping a child buy their first home remains a useful way of passing on family wealth. A trust can work well. You might consider a revocable interest. Trusts are not just used for tax mitigation and are a useful asset protection tool also.

A loan can be written off in stages to use up annual IHT gifting allowances. This release should be done by a deed. The loan could be

repaid over the years in lieu of paying mortgage-interest. This is a good way to teach financial discipline; rather than the child being given too much too young.

The important thing is to talk it through with a solicitor, as your trusted advisor, so that you can establish your priorities and they can help you structure the arrangements in the best way to suit you and your family.

New Facility at Benjamin Court Opens

A new accommodation-based reablement facility in Cromer has opened.

Benjamin Court is a facility designed to give hospital leavers an opportunity to build confidence to regain their independence. Norfolk County Council has invested £1.6m in the unit, which has been changed from a palliative care unit to a reablement centre.

The service began in February, but was formally opened last month by Cllr Shelagh Gurney, vice-chairman of the Adults Social Services Committee at Norfolk County Council.

She said “We understand how much people value their independence, and want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and our new unit is certainly making that possible for more of our residents.

confidently after a hospital stay.”

Benjamin Court will have capacity for 18 service users, with nine residents currently in place.

The first user to come through the doors was 93-year-old John Worthington, a former Second World War commando who had been treated in hospital for double pneumonia. He spent around a fortnight at Benjamin Court, before returning home to his wife Yvonne, 97.

He said, upon returning to the facility for the official opening, “The staff here were very good, excellent …everything here was excellent. They look after you.”

Norfolk County Council aims to open more reablement centres in the near future, with a number of locations under consideration.

“Since it opened three months ago it has already helped nearly 50 people get back on their feet and return home safely and

Pupils and staff at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham celebrated the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with a ‘Royal’ Mufti Day.

The school turned up in an array of costumes including princesses and princes. They could also wear clothes with red, white and blue to incorporate the ‘royal’ theme.

SheringhWm

Children in Reception Class held two ‘weddings’ in the afternoon and invited Mrs Harazdiuk, the Head Teacher, as their guest of honour.

In the morning the children used equipment from their obstacle course to construct a church for the ceremony and made a ‘Royal’ cake using cardboard boxes.

As part of mufti day, pupils were asked to bring a donation to put towards the tombola for the school Summer Fayre on Saturday 16 June. The Fayre, which is between 12pm-3pm, will be having a bouncy castle, pony rides, military vehicles, and an array of stalls. Everyone is welcome!

MIXED TRACTION GALA

If you have been looking forward to this year's annual Diesel Gala you may have become aware that we have been a little slower than usual with updates on locomotive confirmations and attractions. There have been a number of difficulties regarding the availability of both visiting locomotives and our home fleet - the Class 03, 31 and 37 locomotives are still undergoing major overhauls.

Therefore we have made the decision for this year to operate a Mixed Traction Gala to ensure we can still provide an interesting and varied event.

12131, which will be available for hauling at selected times throughout the weekend within station limits.

New for this year we are throwing open the doors for guided tours around the Weybourne works. During the tour you will get a chance to see our machine shop, carriage and wagon department, the loco running shed and our ever growing boiler shop. Shed tours will be free entry for anyone with an event ticket and £5.00 for those without.

We are offering a special ticket deal this year, 2 days for the price of one which will be on sale from our online shop soon.

Join us for the Mixed Traction Gala on the North Norfolk Railway, between the 15th and 17th June. An intensive timetable will be in operation with lots to see and experience.

MIXED TRACTION GALA 15th - 17th JUNE 2018 Run in conjunction with The Weybourne Traction Group. This years event combines heritage steam and diesel traction with a variety of historic coaching stock. Diesel Class 08,11, 20, 37, 42

Our special guest for this is Class 42 Warship D832 'Onslaught', courtesy of the Bury Hydraulic Group. In addition, our friends at Direct Rail Services have very kindly agreed to provide a locomotive (identity not yet known) and long-term visitor Class 20 20227 newly named 'Sherlock Holmes' will be the third diesel loco. Supporting this will be the railway's Class 101 DMU in its hybrid blue/green liveries.

Home Fleet steam: 92203 & 76084. Passenger, Goods & Parcels.

And much more

Adding further interest is Class 08 D3935. After more than 6 years out of traffic for a major overhaul, the Gronk will be officially re-launched into service with a special daily round trip from Weybourne to Holt and back. Our shunting locomotives are usually kept within station limits but for this Gala we are excited to offer an outing on the running line. The inaugural journey on the Friday will be a special celebratory run, with a glass of Prosecco included for each lucky special ticket holder. Tickets for this exclusive service will be available from our online shop soon for a £5.00 supplement per person.

Making this a truly mixed traffic gala will be the appearance of 2 steam locos, 9F, 92203 'Black Prince' and Standard 4, 76084 both steam and diesel locos will be operating a mixture of passenger and non-passenger trains, including our new parcels services throughout the three day event. If one shunter wasn't enough, we give you a second! Class 11, North Walsham Times 544 June 9th 2018

The annual awards ceremony which sees Keep Britain Tidy hand out Blue Flags and Seaside Awards to local authorities was held in Cromer last month.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy presented 190 awards to England’s very best beaches, including 65 international Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (eight more than last year), with 42 beaches achieving both awards.

Blue Flag winning authorities from Poole to Waveney and Torbay to Hastings were present at the ceremony on Cromer Pier. Organisations including Anglian Water, the RNLI Lifeguards, the Environment Agency, the Marine Conservation Society and parish councils from the Blue Flag towns and villages in North Norfolk also attended.

The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth.

NNDC has repeated its success this year with East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham all named in this year’s Blue Flag list.

The awards recognise the top tier of English beaches and are given out only to those sites that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety.

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and the Conservative Group, said “We are really proud to have retained our six blue flags in North Norfolk. It is recognition of all the hard work put in by various agencies and voluntary groups.

“Furthermore we are delighted we've been chosen to host this national event and welcomed our fellow coastal authorities to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at North Norfolk District Council, said “I’m delighted my own ward, The Runtons, has again been awarded two Blue Flags. Well done to all involved in North Norfolk and beyond.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said “The success of the 148 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.

“When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.

As well as the six Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, won a Seaside Award.

Imagining

The night was cold and dreary, The moon behind the clouds, Everyone on their way home Breaking from the crowds. I though I heard you calling me, Your voice was soft and clear, I looked around, but all too dark No-one could I see there. I stayed and waited for some time, There now was quite a breeze Blowing from the North Sea Rustling in the trees. Again I thought I heard you call, My head was truly clear, I stood and listened for a while, But it seemed no-one was there

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We had lovely weather for the Spring Sale on 26 May and raised £1030.98 for the cats. We would like to thank everyone who supported us on the day and also our volunteers for all their hard work making it possible.

Dixie has now left for her new home but Mr Pastry is still with us at present. Jules, one of the kittens mentioned last time, has also gone to her new home, as has Mary Lou the kittens’ mother.

The other three kittens will be leaving for their new home when their family return from holiday. Josie, one of these kittens, did need emergency visits to Westover vets recently as she developed a high temperature and was very dehydrated. As well as receiving medication to treat the dehydration, she was also give subcutaneous injections under the skin to help her recovery. Although Josie may also have another health issue, which will not affect her life span, her new family are still happy to offer her a home. Because kittens can have health issues in the first few weeks of life we find it is better to wait until we are sure that they healthy, or if there are problems, we can advise people before they come to see them. Josie had not given us any cause for concern and it was unfortunate that she became ill after being chosen, together with her brother and sister, Jackson and Jess.

Another new arrival is Connor, who arrived via Bridge Vets in Wroxham, having been handed into care as a stray with a serious and complicated break to one of his legs. They contacted us to see whether we would be able to take him into care as he would need several weeks cage rest after having an operation to either repair the break or amputate the leg (at that stage it was not certain that the leg could be saved). Stephanie said we would have a place for him and, because he was in so much pain, David operated on him that afternoon. He is quite happy being confined to a dog crate at present and is making good progress. Once he is given a clean bill of health he will be put up for adoption. PROVIDING FRIENDLY, EXPERIENCED & PROFESSIONAL VETERINARY CARE TO THE ANIMALS OF NORFOLK FOR OVER 125 YEARS

Fleas Return!

Fleas are ectoparasites, meaning that they live on the skin of their hosts, just like many other parasites of pets such as ticks and lice. Normally, the first signs of infestation will be: your pet persistently scratching small brown insects on its skin between the fur brown-black flecks on its fur or bedding that looks like dirt.

While only the adults bite and cause distress, the majority of the population are not found on the animal itself. Around 95% of fleas, mainly larvae and pupae, live around our household, deep within carpets, bedding, sofas and in crevices between the skirting and floorboards.

Female fleas can lay between 30 and 50 eggs per day, so just 50 female fleas could release 2,500 eggs onto your pet in just one day, which drop off around your home.

If your pet is on our Heath Plan then you can pick up your treatment every 3 months without fail and your free 6 month check will establish your pet’s clean bill of health, confirming our recommended products are working. Westover Veterinary Centre 40 Yarmouth Rd, North Walsham, Norfolk NR28 9AT

We are very lucky with the vets that we use (as well as Bridge and Westover we also use Glaven at Holt for the cats in care at Briston). As well as those with years of experience they also have the new young vets full of enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Some are excellent surgeons, Poppy is a nice affectionate girl and needs a some good with nervous home as the only cat cats and some happy to treat ferals, so we know we can rely on them all to provide us with an excellent service.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Pictured is a much improved Humphrey who is now eating well so will not need any more medication. He has made a great recovery from his injuries.

Biscuit came in with a nasty infection from what appears to be a bite to the side of his face. At the moment he is on antibiotics and I am bathing it with a salt water solution. Until the scab comes off I will not know if his sight has been affected in that eye.

I have been having hedgehogs coming in very dehydrated in this dry hot weather. Please leave out a shallow dish of water - it really can make a difference between life and death.

Many thanks

Men encouraged to talk about their mental health problems

A plea for men living with mental health issues to “talk and open your heart” was made at a new drop-in session held in North Norfolk Fakenham and North Walsham which combine craft activities with a chance to talk.

Norfolk Men’s Wellbeing project lead Gabriel Abotsie added “Men are three times as likely as women to commit suicide and less likely to seek help because they feel they have to be providers and protectors and cannot be seen to be weak. Our campaign aims to encourage men to seek support.”

Mark Webster from The Conservation Volunteers with finds during restoration work at Honing Station

The event at Cromer showcased a range of places men can turn to if they are living with stress, anxiety or depression - from support and advice groups to singing and gardening sessions.

The appeal was delivered by Cedric Anselin, former Norwich City football player now a Mental Health Ambassador. He told the gathering at Cromer Parish Hall his poignant personal story of going from UEFA Cup player to club rejection, feeling unwanted, lonely and being on the brink of suicide through to his ongoing recovery. He added “Men all think they are Superman but we need to talk, open our hearts, surround ourselves

with positive people we trust and learn how to handle the bad days.”

The event - held during Mental Health Awareness week - hosted 16 stalls, all offering help and hope. Among them were the Wellbeing Service and new Men’s Sheds at Cromer, Sheringham,

The afternoon was organised, with the support of volunteers by The Wellbeing Service, Local Associate Coordinator Emilie Ruddick who said: “I am really pleased with our new event and we were able to refer some visitors to people who can offer them help.”

New production for the Jubilee Players ‘Busybody’ a comedy by Jack Popplewell

After the disappointment of not being able to put on a production since February 2017, we’re delighted to announce that The Jubilee Players will be treading the boards again at The Tithe Barn in Horstead in June.

Busybody is a comedy set in 1960s London and centres around an archetypal talkative cleaning lady, Mrs Piper, who lives in the basement flat of the office block she cleans. We join her as she discovers a dead body, but by the time the police arrive, there is no body and no evidence of a crime having been committed.

The wrong alarms are sent out, murdered men turn up alive, and the whole thing is chalked up to the cleaning lady’s imagination until an unidentified body turns up some miles away and Mrs Piper uncovers more evidence in the course of her duties. Is the company owner staging his own murder? Is his wife withholding vital evidence? Where do the two female assistants fit in?

Scotland Yard’s finest are determined to solve the crime but it’s not going to be without the help of Mrs Piper who is not only ready to tell the cops to mind their own business, but also how to go about their business.

Antingham Village Hall

NORTH NORFOLK FIBREGLASS FLAT ROOFING COMPANY LTD

An Annual General Meeting was held on 22 May for Antingham Village Hall when the committee stayed the same as previously.

Unfortunately we did not have one person from the village or from any of the many clubs that use the hall on a weekly basis turn up to see how their hall was run.

The best solution for a flat roof construction

Our secretary reported that our hall is well used by many local clubs, events and groups. These include Gateway, Countrysiders’ Club, Indoor Carpet Bowls, Line Dancing, African Tribal Dance Club, Table Tennis, Pigeon Club, Band Practice and Flower Arranging Club. We also run bingo and quiz nights, keep fit and table top sales. The hall is also used by the Parish Council for their meetings and as a Polling Station. In addition the hall is available for private hire including, birthdays, wedding anniversary etc. Our new hall keeper and booking clerk is Mrs Sheila Strover who has settled in well and is doing an excellent job.

✔ Maintenance free

✔ Long life expectancy ✔ Choice of colours

✔ Non slip finish available ✔ 100% waterproof and weathertight

Your committee work hard to make the hall available and to stay available but it does cost approximately £370 per month to run, so it is vital that as many people as possible make use of our hall.

Should you run a club or hold events please contact Sheila on 01263 833140 who will be happy to help you. Sylvia Willingale

Popular Bagot goats arrive back in Cromer

Nannies and kids sure to prove a popular tourist draw as well as providing important habitat management.

01263 649001

North Norfolk District Council’s famous herd of Bagot goats has arrived back in Cromer as they prepare to spend another summer at the popular seaside resort.

The Bagot goats – which have spent the winter on duty elsewhere in Norfolk – have proved a hit with visitors over the past couple of years, as well as carrying out an important habitat-management role on Cromer’s cliff.

Nine nannies and ten kids arrived last month after putting in their most recent shift at Kelling Heath. Meanwhile, eight billies will continue their hard work at Salthouse Heath over the summer.

The Bagot herd pictured elsewhere in Norfolk

Cllr Hilary Cox, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at NNDC, said “The goats have proved to be very popular with visitors, and they have combined that with doing a superb job managing the habitat.

“We’re delighted to have them back, and we’re sure they will be welcomed by residents and visitors alike.”

In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass, and that helps keep plant growth across the area under control.

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are very hardy and easy to tame.

This herd first came to Cromer in 2016, when eight goats began the task of keeping the cliff habitat under control. Last year, a further eight were brought down from Cumbria and added to the herd, and the size of their enclosure was also doubled.

Since then, 10 billies were sold to Suffolk Wildlife Trust to make room for the purchase of a complete breeding herd from Somerset earlier this year. North Walsham Times 544 June 9th 2018

Who is suitable for laser liposuction? Anyone with resistant pockets of fat. You have to be in good general health without significant medical problems and near your ideal body weight. Liposuction is not an alternative to diet and exercise and it is not a weight loss measure. It is purely to remove stubborn deposits of fat and a body sculpting or contouring treatment.

What areas are commonly treated? Mummy tummy, upper and lower abdomen, jowls and neck, double chins, love handles, muffin tops, hips, man boobs or moobs, upper arms, thighs, knees and most other body areas with localised collections of fat.

What happens during the procedure? You will have a medical consultation and treatment plan will be discussed. Fine needles will be used to administer a very dilute solution of local anaesthesia while you will be chatting with the team. A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre will then be introduced into the treatment area. The laser will be activated to melt the fat and tighten the skin. The laser will not be used if you decide to recycle the fat to enhance other face or body areas such as breasts, buttocks or hands etc. This procedure involves fat injections to add volume. Small stainless steel tubes [micro cannula] will be used to suck out melted fat. Compression garments will then be applied and you will be able to go

Golf day boosts brain tumour charity close to captain’s heart A charity day at Mundesley Golf Club raised £3241for a cause close to the heart of the men’s captain.

The annual Captains’ Day saw 68 players in 17 teams, led by men’s and women’s captains Jim McQuattie and Sue Symmons, tackle 27 holes followed by an auction which boosted the funds of Brain Tumour Research.

Mundesley men’s captain Jim McQuattie

Mr McQuattie’s son Ian was diagnosed with a tumour in October 2015 and had it removed four days later. After radio and chemotherapy he has now got his driving licence back and has just resumed working as a chemical engineering at BP.

The total was boosted by a Wear a Hat Day organised by Mrs Symmons and a captain’s bunker, which raised £200 and £90.

Norfolk Billiards

The 33rd annual Billiard Tournament sponsored by Wheelspeed of Fakenham took place on Sunday 27 May at Broadland Snooker Centre, Hellesdon in Norwich.

Twenty four players from around Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and one entry from Kent took to the green baize to fight out some keenly contested matches, each playing five matches to earn the right to qualify for the semi-finals of either the main event or the plate competition. The main competition saw Mervyn Tuffield take on Mick White and Darrel Newman play Mark Hill.

White progressed to the final with a comfortable 242 to 138 point victory, while Hill who had not lost a match in qualifying just got home by 14 points, 172 to 158. The final saw Hill triumph comfortably with White never able to get his game going. Mark Hill with Clive

The Plate competition saw highest handicapped player Nathan Mann take on veteran John Thompson who clung on to claim a 19 point victory 158 to 139.

The other semi saw Kent player Dave Smith up against Aylsham youngster Harley Dyson, with the youngster comfortably winning 253 to 157.

The final brought together two Alby League players in Thompson and Dyson, and after a closely matched first half of the game, Dyson pulled away in the latter stages to further enhance his growing reputation as a youngster with tremendous potential within the three ball game by winHarley Dyson ning the Plate competition. Tournament organiser Aubrey Ampleford and Wheelspeed owner Clive Scott conducted the presentations and trophies were presented to the winners and runners up, with everyone expressing enjoyment with the day and the food that had been served. North Walsham Times 544 June 9th 2018

North Walsham Table Tennis Clean Sweep for Gresham’s School A

The Second of this season’s four concluding Cup Finals was the Handicap Doubles as Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter (0), Jonathan Hancock (1) and Jonas Lee (0) battled NWSCE’s Andrew Weston (40), Ben Lester (40) and James Lester (28). The two teams could not have had more contrasting paths to the final. NWSCE had won their opening two rounds 5-3 and then won their quarter and semi-final on a decisive match, the latter from 0-4 down against Aylsham Albion. On the other side of the draw, the closest Gresham’s had been pushed was 5-2 as they won all their other ties 5-1! The handicaps meant that Gresham’s School A would start on 0 points in every battle with NWSCE having an advantage of either 34 (when James Lester was playing) or 40 points. Thaxter and Lee won the opener 61-55 and a tight second saw Hancock and Lee beat the Lesters 61-58. Thaxter and Hancock then took a 3-0 lead in the best of nine final with a 61-51 defeat of Weston and Ben Lester. Weston and James Lester pulled one back for NWSCE with a 61-59 win against Hancock and Lee.

The NWSCE team continued to fight well as they had been doing all night but a 61-58 win for Thaxter and Lee against Weston and Ben Lester moved Gresham’s one win away from claiming both Doubles Cups this season. Thaxter and Hancock sealed the team’s 5-1 win with a 61-57 victory against the Lesters.

Gresham’s School A were also involved in the two remaining Cup finals – being pushed all the way by Aylsham Enterprise to take the Handicap Singles 5-4 before completing the season with a 5-2 defeat of Poachers in the Knockout Singles. This means the team have completed a historic clean sweep with all four Cups added to their Premier Division title. Their vast array of trophies was presented to them as the curtain came down on the season with the AGM and trophy presentation night which was held at the regular venue of the Lighthouse Inn, Walcott where once again thanks are due to Steve Bullimore for his kind hospitality. The trophies were presented by League President Peter Ward which included all the winners and runners-up from this season’s League

The Vikings completed their season by overwhelming Norwich 42 -14 to retain the Norfolk Senior Cup. This was part of ‘Norfolk's Big Rugby Weekend’ when all the County Finals were held. The Raiders were also in action beating Diss Saracens to win the Norfolk Bowl. Three Youth teams were there too: the Under 16s and Under 15s both losing to Wymondham, the Under 14s defeating Holt. Nearly 900 seven to twelve year olds descended on Scottow for the Annual Minis Festival, 80 teams playing 280 matches. The Festival is part of a season long programme of training and games designed to build a lifelong love of rugby and promote Rugby's Core Values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sporting Behaviour. Children start out at seven playing no contact tag rugby, with elements of the adult game added each year.
