Opening of Heritage Centre

On Sunday 17 June, North Walsham’s Heritage Centre in Vicarage Street, was formally opened by Rev Paul Cubitt. The opening was attended by supporters, residents, Town and District Councillors.

It had been a very, very long journey to find a home for an exhibition to promote the fascinating history of our town, explained Bob Wright, Chair of the Heritage Group that has created it. He said that this marked the end of a four-decade search, begun long ago by the Historical Society and finally achieved over the last four years by the Heritage Group, itself an off-shoot of Regenerate North Walsham CIC.

The group are most grateful to the Town Council for helping to provide a home for the exhibition. Fitting this out has been made possible by grants. From North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund, and from the EU, via Wensum and Coast Local Action Group under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

The exhibition inside is in its early days, but aims to explain and display the town’s key historical events and businesses. It will grow just as quickly as the group are able to track down interesting items from North Walsham’s past. Bob Wright stressed that although the Heritage Group has set up the exhibition, it belongs to the community, and that there are four ways in which he hoped everyone in town will support it.

• If you have, or know of, any historically interesting items, then the group would love to hear about them • The Heritage Centre and the Information Centre share the ˜Mi North Walsham’ building and are run by volunteers. If you would be interested in joining the team, then please do contact us. Continued on page 4...

Opening of Heritage Centre

Continued from front cover... • The running costs for the building are quite small and to cover these, the group would really appreciate lots of small regular donations, so that many people can be involved - for example just 20p a day. • Comments in the visitors’ book suggest that the exhibition is already a popular one. The group’s volunteers hope that over the coming months, everyone in town will make a visit to see for themselves.

Dear Margaret,

Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) are looking for more volunteers to help out at events staged at the Library. Re-formed last year, MLF have received funding from the Parish Council and are currently compiling a list of events (for children and adults) over the coming year. The programme will include talks (both by authors and others on a wide range of topics), children’s workshops and competitions, stalls at village events etc. The MLF committee has been working to provide a varied series of events but we are now looking to recruit people who can help on the day of events – such as setting up for the event, looking after people attending, serving refreshments, taking down after events etc. There is no fixed time as events may be weekdays or weekends, daytime or evenings but we would like to get a list of volunteers who may be able to help at one or more events. MLF aims to increase awareness of the library and its range of services and to promote events of interest to all which will be held at the library. If you feel you could help out please contact us via Steve Whitby – whitbyfamily2003@yahoo.co.uk – or by talking to staff in the library. How much or how little you are able to do is up to you and all offers of help would be gratefully received. Yours sincerely Steve Whitby, MLF. Mundesley

SONGS OF LOVE AND NONSENSE

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society returns to The Auden Theatre on Saturday 14 July at 7.30pm to celebrate their 85th Anniversary with an exuberant programme of music celebrating both Love and Nonsense.

They are delighted that for this special concert they will be accompanied on the magnificent Steinway ‘A’ grand piano by two highly talented keyboard players – rehearsal accompanist Philip Adams together with the world renowned composer/pianist Michael Finnissy.

The concert will feature the love songs of Johannes Brahms Geistliches Lied Op.30 and Liebeslieder Op.52 and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs. The nonsense element is provided by 7 Nonsense Songs by Richard Rodney Bennett.

Musical Director, David Ballard, says “this will be a wonderful concert for a summer evening with music ranging from the sublime love songs of Brahms and Eric Whitacre to the hilariously ridiculous nonsense songs of R R Bennett. This may be classical music but it will be far from stuffy”. And, for those who like the truly romantic touch, the words of

Showtime at Coronation Hall - Seeking Volunteers

‘Showtime at the Coronation Hall’ returns in August continuing the Mundesley tradition of over 30 years of summer, seaside entertainment. Working in partnership with Red Loft Theatre Company, this Coronation Hall project aims to help keep live music and theatre at the heart of Mundesley village and will see local professionals and rising stars treading the boards with two new cabaret style shows.

We will be delivering a first class experience to a dining audience of 100 per night - which is where we need your help. Coronation Hall is seeking volunteers who are able to give their time between 9-11 and 16-18 August, be it for a morning, afternoon, evening or more. We welcome individuals to help with tasks such as shopping, baking, food preparation, car parking, hall/table decoration, food/drink serving, cleaning, raffle organisation, tidy-up and front of house duties. Volunteers will work as part of a team and most importantly, we hope, enjoy themselves. Overwhelmingly, our 2017 volunteers said it was fun and a great way to meet neighbours and make new friends.

If you would like to share the magic of this musical extravaganza, to know more or join us, please contact Kathryn at showtimevolunteer@gmail.com 07710 046869 / 01263 722381

North Walsham and District Historical Society Tour of the Parish Church, speaker Glynn Burrows

The Society met at St Benet’s Hall then moved to the west end of the Church where we saw what little remains of the original Norman Church.

Here Glynn explained that these remains are not built to the same very high standard as the present Church, indicating the wall comprising mainly of large flints plus other pieces of stone masonry.

Flints are not suitable for corners of buildings, hence why many Church towers are built in the round. He reinforced this by comparing the craftsmanship of the present Church which is highlighted by the infill of knapped flint included in the stone work of the corners and buttresses.

We then entered the church by the rear door,

the cause of several infant deaths.

immediately inside we could see a small door high up on the west wall, this was either a room for the Vicar, a Hermit or the Church Library.

Once inside, both entrance doors are very extravagantly decorated, also the extensive arch set into the wall. We then looked at the gravestone slabs set into the floor of the chancel, in particular the large one of William and Anne Reece. William had been the head teacher of Paston’s Collage in Lord Nelson’s time.

The font cover is also highly decorated - this cover was very necessary in the past because the water used for christening was blessed therefore it could not be thrown away afterwards and in time it became very green and stagnant and was probably unfortunately

Further along in the vicinity opposite the organ, Glynn pointed out the door in the wall with another door immediately above it. Originally in this position stood an altar screen, the upper door gave access to the screen. There had been a similar screen erected on the opposite side of the Church where side chapels still exist.

A little further along we came upon two ancient misericords which is a shelving projection on the underside of a hinged seat in a choir stall that helps a person to remain supported while standing up.

This was followed by the Parish chest which is a very sturdy item of Church furniture. It contained Parish records and silver and was secured by seven huge locks.

Next month’s talk is ‘WWI Memorial Window at St Nicholas Church’. Mike Sothcott

Agatha Christie, a Mundesley visitor?

Agatha Christie was a regular summer visitor to North Walsham in the 1930s, so it must be wondered if the world’s top selling author ever strolled along Mundesley beach plotting her next murder.

She may have even visited the Coronation Hall where her celebrated play, Murder on the Nile, is being performed by the Mundesley Players between the 1 and 4 August.

North Walsham Air Cadets Fly High

Four Cadets from 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron flew from the Royal Air Force College Cranwell earlier this month.

Cadets Lenka Hozzova, Jasmin Oates and Jack Daugaard-Hansen are quite new cadets and were flying for the first time in small single engine aircraft. Corporal Orson Ayers had previously flow in a Chinook, but having had previous flights cancelled due to bad weather this was his first experience too in the Tutor trainer.

Despite being their first flights, all the cadets opted to do aerobatics. Having performed several aerobatic manoeuvres they took control, under the supervision of their instructor, a top RAF pilot, and flew a loop! All agreed that this was a fantastic experience. Squadron Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens, said “It’s great to get cadets flying. We are after all Air Cadets. There will be further flying opportunities soon and we hope to have lots of gliding opportunities very soon too.

Green Fingers at Millfield!

North Walsham Garden Centre kindly invited the children from Years 1 and 2 at Millfield Primary School to visit the Centre to learn about growing plants. The children’s learning theme topic this term is all about growing plants and designing bird feeders and the children gained valuable information and knowledge on both of these topics. Ben from the Centre, took the children on a tour explaining what the different plants were, before giving them the opportunity to plant their very own pumpkin seed much to their delight.

They took on the task with enthusiasm and hope to grow their pumpkin in time for Halloween!

The children had a wonderful time and many said they would ask their parents to take them back as they had such a great time.

Players, singers and composer get ready for a wonderful night of music Audience at North Walsham concert set to enjoy a world premiere

The composer of a world premiere and the musicians who will be performing it are getting ready for their big night, with the specially commissioned piece set to be the highlight of a concert in North Norfolk.

Agnes, a pocket oratorio, has been written by Norfolk-based composer Sarah Rodgers for the event, which will be held at St Nicholas’ Church, North Walsham, on 1 July. Sarah Rodgers

Sarah said it was “a special privilege to be part of this exciting project and to be commissioned to write new music for the concert”, which is being put on by North Norfolk District Council and Orchestras Live. The performance by the acclaimed Orchestra of the

Age of Enlightenment (OAE) is one of several events tied in to the Paston 600 celebrations, which will take place later this year to mark the first Paston letter.

Sarah’s piece celebrates the letters of Agnes Berry Paston, and it will be sung by the choir and the girls’ voices of St Nicholas, with soprano Julia Doyle. “It has been fascinating putting together the words for Agnes, from her letters, in order to create a story to tell through the music,” said Sarah.

“The OAE are wonderfully versatile players and I'm really looking forward to hearing them play my piece. I hope lots of people will take advantage of the opportunity to hear a wide range of music performed by these talented musicians.”

The concert, entitled Reliving History, will also include works by Purcell, Handel, Holborne, Warlock and Mozart.

Cherry Forbes, the orchestra’s education director, said “We are really excited to hear the new

commission by Sarah, which is now complete. Working with composers is a wonderful way of making the past come alive and I am already a fan of Sarah’s work, so I can’t wait to hear her new piece!

“Combining the old music we play with the new is always enlivening for us as an orchestra and we are delighted we will be joined in the concert by the boys, girls and men of the St Nicholas choir.”

Tickets are £12 in advance and £15 on the door, with free entry for under-18s and students. They are available online at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/orchestras or in person from North Norfolk Information Centre, Louden Road, Cromer, or North Walsham Community Shop, 1 Market Place, North Walsham.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Connor, the cat with the injured leg has now been given a clean bill of health and is available for adoption. Although a friendly lad we do know that he is used to living with other cats but not dogs and would prefer a family with no young children.

We often get calls from people that need to catch a cat but are unable to get it in a cat basket. It could be because the cat has escaped from its new home and is too nervous to respond to calls because it is in unfamiliar surroundings, or perhaps it is a stray or injured cat that is friendly but will not let anyone close enough to handle it, or again it could be for a feral cat which needs to see a vet, either to be neutered or receive treatment.

In all these instances we will offer the loan of a cat trap to catch the cat. Some people are at first reluctant to use a trap because using one sounds cruel because of the name. We will tell them that this is the best option for the cat because it avoids the trauma of trying to catch the cat and putting it in a basket, possibly in the process, getting scratched and bitten by a very frightened animal.

The traps are quite long and the cat will be enticed into it by food placed at the far end via the clear plastic panel which is removable. To reach the food the cat has to step on a pad which activates a rod that shuts the door at the other end. The cat is now safe and secure.

If the cat needs to go to the vets it can then be transferred to a restraining basket. This is similar to an ordinary wire cat basket but has an option to remove one of its sides. The basket is placed at the food end of the trap and the plastic panel in the trap and the side of the basket are removed to allow the cat safe passage from the trap to the basket. There are also some additional rods in this basket which will restrain the cat to so it can be treated without stress or injury to either it or the vet.

A recent call for a cat to go on our waiting list had a very happy ending.

When a cat is found, we always suggest that people should first of all check with their neighbours to find out if anyone knows of a cat that has gone missing. After that, the next step is to take the cat to the vets who will be only too happy to check for a chip. If that fails, then put a paper Connor, handsome young lad, very friendly collar, with contact and loves attention details, around the cat’s neck, to see if the owner can be contacted that way. This little cat had been around for about two months and was becoming aggressive with the resident cat. It was taken to Westover Vets who confirmed she was chipped and actually lived just around the corner. Her family were delighted to have their cat back as they thought they had lost her for good.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Pictured is Biscuit who had a nasty infection from a bite. With antibiotics it has at last cleared up, He looks a bit odd at the moment as the fur around his face needs to grow again and only time will tell if he has lost the sight in that eye.

It's always a difficult decision this time of year about whether to admit a hedgehog into care as hoglets are now be being born & you could well be removing a mother from her brood.

An active hedgehog out during the day could be a mother searching for a quick meal before heading back to her nest, but an inactive hog laying outside in the daytime is most probably sick or injured and will need help straight away.

Raising Funds for The Countryside Restoration Trust

Eddie Bullimore and Lynn Frarey are now fundraising for The Countryside Restoration Trust, having previously successfully raised nearly £20.000 for Songbird Survival.

The Countryside Restoration Trust protects not only birds but all wildlife, wild flowers, trees, insects, everything with nature but most importantly educates children – including school visits, making beetle banks, growing their own plants, studying red squirrels, birdwatching so many things for them to learn about nature.

We are holding yard sales with the generosity of the public and will hopefully be successful in raising as much money as possible.

We hope the public will continue to support us with our new charity.

New Aylsham Chess Club

5 local chess players, Bruce Carman, Bob Grindrod, David Owen, Matt Rausch and Jonathan Reeve, have decided to re-establish Aylsham Chess Club in time for the 2018-19 season.

Match4Mark

Mark’s son Nathan writes “our latest charity football match took place earlier this month and raised £500 - so £250 each for the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK.

The photo shows the two teams with Marlene's School of Dancing from Cromer who put on a fantastic performance for us just before kick-off which really helped liven up the event and draw in a decent crowd.

The final score in the game this year was North Walsham 7-0 Lincoln Uni.

My team's performance was absolutely faultless, Dad would've been so proud. Shame the score line was so one-sided though - unfortunately several of Lincoln's winning team from last year were absent this time.

I'd like to thank everyone who helped and donated and particularly Marlene and Natalie and their dance class for coming down and putting on a great show, which really made a huge difference to how successful the event was.

I would also like to thank our photographer Leigh Caudwell who took some great pictures which are available on his Facebook page @LeighsPhotography (you can also find his Flickr link on there), Neil Coop for letting us hire the pitch and the facilities and Rhys Lloyd for putting on a fantastic pub quiz to end the day, which proved to be very popular with entry fees making up a big chunk of the total raised! Roll on next year! Outside Aylsham & District Ex-Service & Social Club, left to right - David Owen (Aylsham Chess Club Secretary), Linda Lutkin (Aylsham & District Ex-Service & Social Club Stewardess) & Bob Grindrod (Aylsham Chess Club - Chair)

The plan is to enter teams in the NCCA (Norfolk County Chess Association) league which starts in October, as well as having internal graded competitions and playing friendly chess games.

The club will be based at Aylsham & District Ex-Service & Social Club, 64 Hungate Street, Aylsham, NR11 6AA.

Over the summer months members will be running events to raise funds and generate interest in the new club.

If you would like to find out more about events, become a member or sponsor Aylsham Chess Club please contact David Owen, Aylsham Chess Club Secretary, via davidowen364@ btinternet.com or 07796 292318

North Walsham Arthritis Care Branch

North Walsham Arthritis Care Branch were delighted to receive the sum of £390 from The Local Waitrose Community Matters Scheme which was awarded as a result of Waitrose Customers in April supporting the local branch.

Thank you to them all - it will be used towards room hire at the Community Centre and hire of a coach on one of our trips out.

We have spaces on our afternoon trip on Thursday 19 July to Moulton Nurseries and Garden Centre with a cream tea. The cost is £10 which is subsidised from Club funds. Places must be booked in advance - info from Carol on 01263 722778.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

The weather has been extremely good to us for this spring planting. We were able to get everything finished in record time and I would like to thank all our helpers for all the hard work they put in through the somewhat hectic days.

All the flower beds look spectacular now and the Grammar School Road beds are a great attraction for the bees and butterflies.

Our new bed at the Post Office is coming along very well and we have now replaced the logs in this bed. More planting will be carried out in the autumn. The Open Reach bed is to have a ‘Bug Hotel’ built on it, made from pallets, and constructed by one of our committee members, Rob Owers. This will have a grass roof, and we hope to have it sponsored by one of our helpers for her young daughter. This bed will now be prepared and shingled ready for planting in the autumn.

We have placed a new tub on the Norwich Road verge near the 30mph sign which is now up for sponsorship, we feel that this is a fantastic site to advertise your business as it is very visible from both directions. Please contact Chris Roberts on 01692 402174 if you are interested in sponsorship.

I would like to thank everyone who donated to our Town Collection on 14 June, and to all our helpers who once again gave up their time to come and rally to the cause. We raised a sum of ÂŁ254.20 from the collection and stall. We are still experiencing a high degree of dog poo in the Churchyard. It also appears that some people are taking their dogs in the Churchyard and letting them run free while they read a book or just sit and chat to friends. This is happening on a regular basis especially in the early evenings. It should be remembered that the Churchyard is consecrated ground and deserves the respect and care we try to give it.

Please continue to come and chat with us when we are about the town, we always enjoy discussing our work with you.

Ticks

A warm and wet start to the summer has meant a great environment for lots of the parasites we see at the vets. Fleas are an ever present throughout the year now due to central heating and resistance to many of the common flea treatments, but it is ticks that are really booming. Thanks to milder winters and the relaxation of the pet travel scheme in Europe we now have 4 different species of ticks in the UK and they are all becoming more prevalent. Some of you may have heard about the Babesiosis outbreak a couple of years back emanating from the South East of the country. This is a very severe, but fortunately rare disease that is transmitted by a tick that until recently was not normally seen in Great Britain. Unfortunately, the tick that carries the disease is being found across more and more of the country. This is alongside the tick that carries Lyme disease, a more commonly encountered disease that can affect both humans and our pets.

These diseases and ticks are impossible to eliminate as they exist in the wildlife population, but what we can do as pet owners is ensure that our cats and dogs are properly protected. By using a flea and tick treatment throughout the year you can ensure that any ticks your pet picks up will have been killed before they have managed to transmit any tick-borne diseases. Most practices will offer health care plans or clubs that help to spread the costs of such treatments across the year and combine the treatment with vaccinations and worming cover, which is equally important for pets and also any children that they come into contact with.

As always prevention is better than cure so if you have any concerns please get in touch with the surgery. Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB The League Season has ended now until September, with our Men’s 1st Team being denied 3rd place on the very last day, by another team forfeiting their last match, leading to our rivals gaining a 9-0 walkover which brought them level on points with us, only for them to take 3rd spot on account of Rubbers won over all matches. Just our luck! So, 4th it is, but a huge leap from bottom of the table last year. Still a lot to work on and always mistakes to iron out, but definite and clear progress from all teams!

Well done Warriors and a big thank you to each and every single one of you who played or supported us this year, a special thank you to Labone Indian Restaurant for sponsoring all three teams’ shirts this season! Next season we will have 2 x Men’s Teams, 1 x Mixed Team AND 1 x Ladies’ Team! If you fancy earning a place in a Team, just come along to our Club night every Wednesday 8pm - 10pm! It is wonderful to see our little club grow, however, there is also a little

With barely time to draw breath since the end of last season, preparations are well underway for the 2018-19 campaign. The senior sides begin training next Tuesday, 3 July, at 7pm at Scottow with sessions then every Tuesday and Thursday. As always, newcomers will be made very welcome.

There is just one complete newcomer to the Vikings' fixture list : HAC (Honourable Artillery Company) who play in Chiswick and were promoted from London 2 North West. Compared with 2017 - 18 the other newcomers are Luton, Rochford Hundred, Southend Saxons and Sudbury all of whom the Vikings have played before at some stage. They replace Brentwood, Chingford (both promoted) and relegated Letchworth, Saffron Walden and South Woodham Ferrers.

sadness this year as Stalham Badminton Club will not be competing in the Norwich & District League next season. With the ever-rising Club costs and falling regular member numbers, it is really important that local Clubs get help everywhere they can, so if any local businesses would like to help support the Warriors Club, please, please email Ray on razerestringz@gmail.com or just search for Walsham Warriors on Facebook! We are looking for kit sponsors for four teams, sponsors for our quiz nights, tournament sponsors and home match sponsors!

For those who would like Badminton coaching, we have a new regular Group Coaching Session which is every Sunday from 10am - 12noon at North Walsham Sports Centre, £5 per person, for all ages and abilities, just come along! (NOTE : There won’t be any on 1 July due to training) For private coaching, please email Ray on the email address above.

Our next event is back by popular demand and will be another Quiz and Challenge Night on Saturday 7 July at 7.30pm for teams of 4 or less (£10 per team), hosted at North Walsham Sports Centre with its Licensed Bar. There will be rounds of normal quiz questions, separated by fun taskmaster style rounds! It will be fun and will help us raise funds for the Club, hope to see you there and tell everyone!

The Vikings' first league fixture is on 1 September home to Fullerians, one of last season's most improved sides.
