01263 823398 This year saw an increase to the vintage vehicles & what a display they were. Vehicles of all shapes & sizes!
Two's Company, Detour & Ultra Ego rocked the night away in the marquee on the Saturday evening with East Coast Bars providing the liquid refreshment.
The Funday … as always it was a great day out. Lots of stalls, food & displays. Live music from Those Deadbeat Cats, Hillbilly Goats Gruff & closing with The Black Jacks. Arena displays by Victory Swim & Leisure and Sarah Yendall & her zumba groups.
Once again L Gray & Sons supported our event for the whole weekend for which we are extremely grateful.
The Funday Committee would like to thank everyone who supported this event. The sense of community spirit was overwhelming. You did us proud!

Sharing your home with an older parent Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
This is a companion to last month’s article on the topic of ‘The Bank of Mum and Dad', which dealt with parents helping their young adult children put their first foot on the housing ladder. Here, I consider arrangements where children help and support their parents with housing in later life.
This can be provided by combining one home into two or by a ‘granny annexe’ arrangement; usually, but not always, done with the best of motives. It may involve an element of a gift but, with that comes risks and sacrifices. The solicitor has a major role to play in putting in place a plan and/or giving independent advice.
Possible arrangements are:
• Buying something together, possibly a house with a granny annexe; • Buying two homes close together, with each household still being independent; • Adapting/extending one of their homes; • Squeezing the parent into the current home; this is usually the least good option.
Important points to consider are:
• Differing interests and potential conflicts; especially between the in-laws. Ideally, all arrangements should be as open within the

family as possible, even if it is not what all the family would have chosen. Here, clear legal advice is critical and all the possible future problems need thinking through in advance. ‘Stress tests’ are best applied at this point, rather than in a crisis. If there is a gift element, is it in return for the provision of care? Would this include buying in specialist nursing care? If there is to be joint ownership, who is to own what? If building work is done, the cost of it is not usually reflected in an increase in property value. What if the child needs to raise a mortgage to provide their contribution? What if it all goes wrong? Who are you to turn to for advice/support? What about loss of mental capacity? A Lasting Power of Attorney appointing an independent trusted advisor can be a God-send. Achieving fairness, especially upon the parent’s death. Who gets what and when? Might the carer-child and their family lose their home, if they can’t afford to buy out the siblings after the parent’s death? What if the parent needs residential care? How is it to be paid for? Is there to be a buy-out option? Taxation complications: Watch out for the
new Inheritance Tax: Residential Nil Rate Band and the 3% surcharge to Stamp Duty Land Tax, especially.
There is a lot to think about and every family is different. Clear and independent advice is so important. A bespoke solution is worth the investment.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

50 Years of Service
2110 (North Walsham) Squadron RAF Air Cadets, Civilian Instructor Terry Owen was awarded a certificate from the RAF Air Cadet Commandant, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, in recognition of his service to the Air Training Corps.
Terry teaches radio communication to the cadets at North Walsham Squadron. Since his arrival from Stalham Squadron in September last year he has tutored ten cadets through their blue communicators award and many more will follow. But Terry must have seen hundreds of young cadets achieve various radio awards in his time as an Air Cadet Instructor as he started his career in Finchley, London, back in 1968. He was for a time the North London Wing Radio Officer before moving to Norfolk 25 years ago.
CI Terry Owen receives his long service certificate from Flt Lt Alan Stevens
2110 Squadron Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens, presented the certificate to Terry on behalf of the Corps and Norfolk and Suffolk Wing RAF Air Cadets and said how lucky North Walsham cadets were to have such a valued instructor. The cadets always really enjoy radio exercises run by Terry and benefit from the high quality training. Flt Lt Stevens also offered his thanks for Terry's invaluable assistance on the Squadron.
North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at 2110 Sqn HQ, North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 18 years. They are currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers. North Walsham Times 546 July 14th 2018

As I am sure everyone knows by now 27 July is Norfolk Day. To mark the occasion members of St Nicholas Church North Walsham are going to open up the archive chest and mount a display of some of the rarely seen archive material. The focus of the display will demonstrate the way that North Walsham has celebrated some of the significant events of the past going back as far as the coronation of Edward the VII. It will also include more recent events such as our present Queen’s jubilee and the way that things have changed over the years.
We will be joined by many organizations from our local area including the Heritage Society, Mothers’ Union, Historical Society, Women’s Institute, Girl Guides to name but a few.
The exhibition will run from 10am to 4pm on Friday 27 July and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday 28 July. Admission is free and refreshments will be available both days. We look forward to seeing you there.

Summer Spirit as Cley Calls to art and nature lovers
A long summer weekend of wildlife and creativity inspired by the unique North Norfolk landscape is coming to Cley from Thursday 2 until Sunday 5 August.
With Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Aspinall Centre as its hub, Cley Calling Summer Spirit is a festival of writing, art, photography, music and performance, all inspired by the natural world. Each event in the festival reflects nature in a different way, through the eyes, the voice, the fingertips or the mind of a different artist.
For families, a two-day workshop will see one of the bird hides at Cley become a giant pinhole camera, with an exhibition of photos created. On the Saturday we are celebrating marine wildlife, with a free full day of ‘Ocean Commotion’ on the beach.
There will be performances from musician Toby Hay, and John Hinton will sing his ‘Ensonglopedia of Science’. Bringing her new book Eye of the Shoal, Helen Scales comes to Cley Calling to destroy the myth that fish are brute, unthinking creatures and to enchant us with the watery secrets of their lives.
North Norfolk artist Amelia Mills is enthralled
by the shifting moods and shapes of the sea. For Cley Calling she will deliver a live demonstration of her unique style of capturing the North Sea waves in paint and exhibit her work in the Aspinall Centre for two weeks.
For some lovers of the wild, engaging with nature involves detailed study, description and naming. With its mix of grazing marsh, saltmarsh and reedbed, Cley is not only a celebrated site for birds. Its varied habitats are also home to many scarce or little-known species of moth so experts will be on hand during the festival to open their live traps and share a haul of moths whose beauty is matched only by the strange, poetic names.
Even less well known than moths are solitary bees, many of which are tiny and inhabit vanishing remnants of habitat. Nick Owens, author of Bees of Norfolk and Cley local, will lead a Cley Calling workshop on bee identification, aimed at complete beginners and established bee-lovers alike. We’ll be all abuzz with bee crafts and activities for families during the Friday too.
There is even more to this celebration of all
VW VW
things wild in North Norfolk and of the wild creativity of people faced with nature - guided walks; a beach clean, barbecue on the terrace, wildlife watching - the summer spirit is strong at Cley Marshes.
This is the third year of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Cley Calling festivals. For the full events listing and to book events where required, go to www.cleycalling.com or call the NWT Visitor Centre at Cley on 01263 740008.
Cley Marshes centre manager, Ewan Carr said “The Cley Calling celebration will show off this great landscape and encourage people of all ages to engage with wildlife, nature and the creative responses it inspires. Please come along and enjoy a range of events, many for free, all with a stunning Cley backdrop.

Modernising the Marriage Break-Up
Proposals are presently being considered to modernise the marriage break up. If successful the law could be changed so that, upon divorce, there is an equal split of assets between the couple and any maintenance payments will be time limited. At present, when two people divorce a decision must be reached as to how their assets shall be divided. If no agreement is reached, the courts will make the decision. The most common situation involves a husband and wife with the husband being the higher-earner of the two. This is usually because he has been able to forge himself a successful career whilst being supported by a wife who has managed the family home and raised the children. If divorce occurs, the husband is often in a better place financially, and is in a stronger position to build on a career. If the divorce occurs later in life, the chance for the wife to build a career has often already passed and spousal maintenance is the only option to allow her to maintain the same standard of living that she had during her married life. When awarding maintenance, the courts consider many factors including the parties’ earning capacity, financial needs, standard of living and duration of marriage. The aim is to provide a balance to the common disparity in income levels that can occur. Maintenance orders currently cover any period that a couple agree or a court orders and can be made to last the duration of a person’s life.
Many think that the law on maintenance payments needs to change. However the proposed reforms are controversial. So, what do they propose? As a starting point, assets belonging to the couple are to be split equally. Maintenance payments however, are to be limited so they last no more than 5 years.
Canada House, 4 Grammar School Road, North Walsham NR28 9JH
Neil Stubbs specialises in the conduct of matrimonial and relationship breakdown cases. Neil has practised within the North Walsham area for a number of years and generates almost all his work from client recommendations.
Some critics argue that the reforms will place lesser-earning ex-spouses at a disadvantage. Others, however, have highlighted the need to consider social changes and the unreasonable dependence that can be created between ex-spouses following a maintenance order. For example, a 2017 high profile case, Mills v Mills, involved a high earning husband and wife who divorced in 2002 after a 15 year marriage. The finances were settled by consent at the time of divorce and included a lump sum and monthly spousal maintenance payments paid by the husband to wife. Twelve years later, the husband applied to discharge the order altogether, or at least decrease the monthly payments. The wife however, made an application for the monthly payments to be increased, having handled her finances poorly. The Court of Appeal took the unusual decision to increase the maintenance payments due to the wife’s housing needs A strong supporter of the changes, Baroness Deech, argues “if there is one thing that stops women getting back on their feet and being treated seriously and equally at work, it is the assumption throughout the legal system that once a woman is married she is somehow disabled and incapable ever of managing on her own for the rest of her life”.
At present, it remains to be seen whether the law will change. Watch this space…

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Several people rang, who had seen Connor’s photograph in the last article, and would have liked to offer him a new home. However, this lovely lad had already left for his new home before the article was printed.
We have also reunited another cat with its family. When we received a call that a stray had been seen for a few weeks, I was able to check whether or not it was chipped and, as it was, I then found the details of his owner. As the cat was some distance from home and had been missing for several months, his family were delighted to learn that he was safe and well. We believe that, to be so far from home, he must have jumped into a vehicle without the driver realising. Another stray, however, had not been chipped so, after the usual checks at the vets and with paper collars, he is now safe in one of our pens waiting for someone to offer him a new home.
The ‘kitten season’ is now in full swing and there are many available, not only in rescue centres. but on websites and private sales. Because their health is vulnerable in the first weeks of life, we do not put ours up for adoption until they have had their health check with our vets, been given their first vaccination and been microchipped. Christine commenced her talk by telling us that John Craske was born in 1881, into a fishing family, at Sheringham. His father and grandfather worked on steam trawlers out of Grimsby. He met his wife Laura Eke at a Salvation Army outdoor service, where John was preaching. They married in 1908.

A year later he was diagnosed with diabetes, so they moved back to Dereham. Here he started to experiment with wool. His family supported him and the Doctor was paid in paintings.
In 1929 during an extreme bout of restlessness, he started to incorporate wool into his pictures using a long stitch technique. Two notable examples of his work are the long tapestries ‘The Panorama of the Norfolk Coast’ on a 4.5m x 4cm frame, and ‘The Evacuation of Dunkirk’ on a 3.5m x 55cm frame. Both places he had never visited. Many of his paintings have found their way into local museums and other international collections.

The first six months have been hugely successful, with around £6000 of grants being awarded to North Walsham’s charities and voluntary groups
On 20 June, Trustees Paul Oakes and Bob Wright met Sarah from North Walsham Community First Responders. This group provides the first response in many emergencies, being locally based they can arrive in the vital first few minutes before the ambulance. Their 100% voluntary commitment to the role, and its heavy training commitment, can really make the difference to those in need. So North Walsham Community Shop was really proud to be able to present her with a cheque for £1000 to fund the purchase of the medical equipment that will allow a third responder from their team to be available in the town at any one time.

TRUNCH FUN DAY AND SCARECROWS
Trunch Village Society are staging this special event on 15 July between 10am and 4pm. Admission is £3 per adults and children are free with all proceeds going to the Village Society who are then able to provide financial support to ensure the smooth running of local clubs, organisations and projects in the village. Many of the events will be held in ‘The Paddock’, a delightfully enclosed area in the centre of the village within a short stroll from the allocated free parking area.
Stalls will include jewellery, book sales, bric a brac, needlework, cider co-operative, woodwork, clocks and watches and plant sales. A marquee will house a summer flower show and another marquee will be displaying an art exhibition.
Children will find plenty of interest with a Punch and Judy show, coconut shy and face painting together with a number of other games.
In an effort to provide something for everyone there will also be a show of classic cars, bikes and tractors plus amateur radio communications demonstration, static model aircraft, model steam engines, a gun dog obedience display and the Mundesley Fire Engine with crew.
July
The months have slipped by, it is now July. Two larks are soaring high in the sky, blue cornflowers are growing beside the stream, I could sit here all day and happily dream. A blue butterfly hovers and alights on my arm, in a moment she'll move, so I have to keep calm. I pick up my book, a grass snake slithers by, it's time to leave, and I give a sad sigh. A visitors’ programme will include a map identifying the locations of the amazing scarecrows which will be on show as visitors meander around the village. Also there are opportunities to attend a Beekeeping Demonstration run by a Master Beekeeper and to take part in a children’s treasure trail. Ploughman’s lunches, tea, coffee and a variety of cakes will be available in the Village Hall, whilst the family friendly Social Club with licensed bar will be providing a barbecue along with live music.
Michael Tyler, who forms part of an organising committee for this Fun Day, says “We have tried to cater for everyone and invite visitors to enjoy a few leisurely hours in our picturesque village whilst supporting a worthy cause”.

Team GB Watch Out!
2018 has been a fantastic and amazing ‘sports’ year for Millfield. Children from across the school have competed in various sporting events and have either come runners up or winners of their event/league. Most recently, 10 Millfield pupils competed in the inaugural Norfolk School Games ‘Quadkids’ Athletic competition at the UEA on Friday 20 June. The children competed in four separate events, 75m, 600m, Vortex throw and standing jump and their individual scores were added together for an overall team score. The children also got the chance to speak to local Commonwealth Games steeplechase athlete, Iona Lake during the day. Everyone played their part and Millfield came top of the county! Mr Smith, the schools PE co-ordinator and year 3/4 teacher, who took the children to the event, shared their fantastic news with the school in a special assembly honouring their achievement. Mr Smith said “The children were all fantastic and enjoyed the chance to compete at the highest level. Team GB may have some competition in the future! Well done to all those involved.”

Holistic skin care from Coltishall Clinic Look after your skin this summer Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is our body’s first line of defence against the elements such as sun, wind, heat, pollution etc.
You may be surprised to learn than some skin cancers are caused by excessive sun exposure during our formative years of between 5 and 15 years of age. So it is especially important to use sun protection for children.
Also our capacity to form collagen and for skin to renew itself reduces from the age of 18 years. But, there are things we can do to slow down this process. Good skin care forms the foundation of skin health. So here are our recommendations.
SKIn CARE Cleanse and protect Cleanse to remove contaminants from the skin. Based on your type of skin you may choose a gentle or foaming cleanser or even a salicylic acid wash for oily skin. Good sun protection is vital. We are exposed to more artificial light from increasing light pollution so it makes sense to use a SPF 25 even indoors, especially for those of us who have pigmentation issues. Sun protection is not only for the face but also for the whole body including scalp, ears and hands. Exfoliate Dead skin build-up can give your skin a dull, dry, and lifeless look. Exfoliate to reveal softer, fresher, looking skin. You can use an exfoliating product or try our microdermabrasion treatments to remove dry patches and other minor skin imperfections. Hydrate Inside and Out Our bodies are made up of more than 60 per cent water, but throughout the day, we can become dehydrated, giving our skin a wrinkled, less firm appearance. To avoid drying out, drink plenty of water for internal hydration. External hydration is also important, so try applying facial and body lotions immediately following a shower to help seal in moisture. Repair We now have the technology to repair damaged skin. We have a range of medical grade skin care products available at variety of price points at the clinic such as agera, retriderm, heliocare, cell pro and obagi medical.

We also have prescription strength products for stronger effect! Our next step up the skin care pyramid is simple yet cost effective treatments such as light based treatments, gentle chemical peels or microdermabrasion. We do recommend a course of these for best results. For specific skin problems such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation we can use specialised skin care and laser treatments. Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve skin tightening. These procedures however may require a small amount of recovery time. These can be performed purely under local anaesthesia.
For more advanced skin changes we can offer more invasive treatments including surgical treatments. By offering a full range of skin care services – from skin creams to surgery, we can look after all your skin care needs over a lifetime. We also make recommendations based on your unique needs and not suggest treatments only because these are available. Log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 for more information or to book your consultation appointment. Coltishall Clinic Skin Care approach ©

Weather with Ned Nimbus
The past three months of weather on the coast have been greatly affected by the position of a high pressure area that slowly but surely gained influence over our weather.
This was always going to be the case as a dominance of high pressure was forecast but any airstream coming in from a colder than normal North Sea would deal us a cold, misty or cloudy hand from time to time. 24
However, the forecast for a good summer continues into the next three months and this outlook has now been adopted by many forecasters moving from a negative stance.
Higher than normal pressure will continue so the threat of an airstream from the North Sea also continues from time to time although some intense heat this time could be brought to us from the south or south east and its attendant thundery outbreaks. New book from Sheringham Naturalist Moss Taylor
The book opens with a chapter by the owner of the Muckleburgh Collection, Sir Michael Savory, in which he gives a fascinating account of the history of the defences employed in the Weybourne area from Roman times up to photo: christaylorphoto.co.uk the end of the Second World War. The main part of the book describes the amazing variety of birds that the author and other observers have recorded on the camp and the adjoining Muckleburgh Hill. To date 289 species have been recorded in the area, the vast majority since 1972. In addition almost 24,000 birds of 118 species have been ringed on the camp, and these have resulted in a large number of recoveries both within the British Isles and abroad, the most interesting of which are tabulated and their significance explained.
The book runs to 146 pages and includes 39 colour photos of many of the less common birds. It retails at £15 and all profits from the book will go to Love for Leo, a charity set up by the author and his partner, Robina Churchyard, which helps to finance equipment and treatment that is not available under the National Health Service, for Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy.
Copies of the book are available from the shop at the Muckleburgh Collection or from Moss Taylor by phoning 01263 823637 or by email at moss.taylor@btinternet.com North Walsham Times 546 July 14th 2018

WORSTEAD WOLVES YOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB is looking for new players and coaches.
The girls have a busy summer ahead and will be taking part in many more events including school fetes, care homes and the illuminated parade in Cromer carnival. Well done, girls!
During the Summer Holidays both girls and boys will have the opportunity to develop their rugby skills at a five day Summer Camp at Scottow.
This will be led by Vikings regular James Knight who works as a Youth Coach at Premiership side Leicester Tigers' Academy and Langley School.
We are changing to The Norfolk Combined Youth Football League next season and training will be at Madra in Knapton in the winter months and Worstead in the summer months.
If you are interested in coming to see us for training or on a coaches level with no commitment please contact Casey Walker on 07901 582723 or Steve on 01692 407974 - details will be strictly confidential.
The Camp will be a careful blend of skills development, fitness and games. A nutritious hot lunch plus fruit, yogurt and drinks are included in the price of £135 for the week. Participants will need suitable training clothes and a gum shield (can be purchased on the day for £4), and should bring a water bottle. For details follow the Summer Camp link on the club's website www.pitchero.com/clubs/northwalsham or contact Youth Chair Kim Hooker kmhooker9@gmail.com
He will be assisted by other experienced Coaches and Vikings players including Ryan Oakes and new captain Will Hodgson, both of whom are teachers.
Both James Knight and Ryan Oakes have been appointed as Assistant Coaches as part of the new coaching setup. Their responsibilities include work with the Youth & Minis and Schools. Johnny Marsters succeeds James Brooks as Head of Rugby. The 45 year old has been at Scottow since 2105 and was a key member of Brooks' coaching team.
The Camp runs from Monday 30 July to Friday 5 August, 10am – 3pm daily, and is open to those aged between 7 and 15. All levels of rugby experience will be catered for, from newcomers through to those who have been playing many years.
