Continued from front cover... The People’s Favourite is always a popular feature of the exhibition. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite photograph displayed in the main Gallery and the winning image will be featured on the events and programme guide for the following year. Last year’s winner was Rachel Farrow with ‘The Lady of Petan’. The winner will also receive the Hardy Cup. Jim Hardy was the 1998 People’s Favourite winner and a time later he donated the trophy.

Speaking to Jim is like listening to a potted history of photography. Now 90 years old, he came through the pre-digital times of dark room procedures, negatives and slides. A time when precision in composition was more critical, and mistakes were less easy to correct. He retains a purist approach, not completely dismissing the digital development into graphic art, but preferring to capture the scene or action in camera, rather than relying on computer software.

Featured is his 1998 winning entry, named ‘Through the Looking Glass’. He tells how he was driving along the quiet lanes of North Norfolk, when he saw a reflected view in a roadside mirror. Knowing immediately that there was a shot worth capturing, he stopped the car and trekked back to the mirror. He was not wrong! This image was voted as The People’s Favourite, and he received a plaque and certificate from the then Chairman, John Beleni.

Jim has not only kept his winning image and the plaque, but also the cutting of his presentation, published in the North Norfolk News in August 1998.

HELPING THE DISABLED OVERSEAS Rotary in Aylsham has recently launched a new initiative with Physionet, an organisation that helps the disabled overseas. Physionet is an all-volunteer charity collecting redundant physiotherapy and mobility items from around the UK and distributing them in 40ft long containers to developing countries around the world. The organisation has been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

In the first 10 years of operation the charity sent over 5,400 items of special needs equipment , approximately 5,300 wheelchairs and some 2,500 mobility items to Eastern Europe , African counties , India, Sri Lanka and the Pacific Islands. By weight, some 2,500 tons of equipment was saved from scrap.

Rotary in Aylsham has agreed to identify and collect items locally and elsewhere in North Norfolk. Already, more than 50 items have been dispatched. These are collected regionally and then transported to headquarters in North Yorkshire, where items are cleaned, repaired and renovated as necessary before despatch abroad. Partner organisations at the destinations coordinate transport and distribution so that Physionet does not bear those costs. We are therefore seeking redundant wheelchairs (even if damaged or broken), walking frames and walkers, crutches and walking sticks and other equipment which may be of use. We appeal to care homes, surgeries and individuals to get in touch with our co-ordinator to arrange collection or to obtain further information – Ian Stevenson at idstevenson@rocketmail.com or telephone 01692 402440.

MP DEMANDS END TO ‘HOLIDAY HOMES’ TAX LOOPHOLE AS NORTH NORFOLK LOSES £1.8 MILLION Norman Lamb is demanding an end to a loophole which allows homeowners to avoid paying tax on second homes, after new figures revealed that it is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering £1.8 million this year alone. In England, any property that is ‘available to let’ for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than £12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property.

North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-home holiday lets are claiming 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19 –

2018

at a cost of £1,873,998. The figures were disclosed following a freedom of information request from Norman Lamb MP.

While many of these properties will be genuine holiday homes, the ease of registering a property as a holiday home and claiming full business rate relief leaves the system open to abuse by second-home owners who are seeking to avoid paying council tax. Commenting on the figures, Norman Lamb MP said “It is completely unreasonable that hard-pressed residents in North Norfolk are paying higher council tax bills to fund vital local services, while some owners of second homes that are registered as holiday lets are

getting away with paying no tax at all on that property.

“This loophole is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering sum of money which could be spent on social care, children’s services or other essential support.

“It is far too easy for second-home owners to bend the rules under the current system. This is particularly galling in a low-wage economy like North Norfolk, where it is critically important that everyone is making a fair contribution. We cannot afford a system that is open to abuse in this way, which is why these rules need reform as a matter of urgency.”

The sun shines brightly, so with this year comes hope. If we all pull together, I’m sure we will cope. Many stores are closing, a ghost town it will be – I look through a shop window, there’s nothing to see! Ah! McDonald’s is open, I could do with a break, can pay for a cup of tea, can’t afford a cake, I could sit here in peace and just meditate. I’m so grateful for the good times I’ve had, the country’s in turmoil, I’m really quite sad, we must help one another whatever our colour.

The Beauty of August

I see purple heather on the hill, bright red poppies in the rye, the sun is shining brightly against a clear blue sky. A thrush is eating berries in a rowan tree, I get a little closer, he doesn't notice me. The combines are busy, and making quite a dust. I must look for my paintbox, painting nature is a must. I love to walk through the heather on a warm summer's day, the time goes so quickly when good weather comes our way.

North Norfolk District Council hosts its latest exhibition Water-based paintings by local artist go on public display

Local artist Carole Wilshaw is the latest to see her work put on display at North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery.

Carole Wilshaw

The exhibition is called ‘Mostly Just Animals’ and the work includes pictures from her children’s books – ‘Come Back on Saturday’ and ‘Animal Skip and Jump Rhymes’.

“For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by illustrations, especially those depicting animal characters,” said Carole, who hopes to use her retirement to spend more time on art and craft hobbies, including writing and illustrating stories for children. At primary school. I remember discovering the storybook character Babar the Elephant. As well as the character, it was the linework and colour that appealed.”

Retaining an interest in education, creative writing and illustration, Carole wrote stories and poems for her own children when they were young.

“Ideas for characters often originate from a conversation, or maybe just a thought for the title of a story, which I then expand and develop into pictures,” she added.

Carole works with Designer’s Gouache, a water-based paint. She also uses colour pencils for outlines and shading, working over areas of the gouache.

She has been a visitor to Norfolk for the past 30 years, and recently moved here following a career that has seen her train in graphic design, and work for a dress-making pattern company and as a designer for the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.

More recently, she has worked in further education as a tutor, community development worker and mentor, and has taught calligraphy, illustration and textiles to children, sixth-formers and adults.

The exhibition will run until 7 September at the NNDC offices gallery

NORTH NORFOLK FIBREGLASS FLAT ROOFING COMPANY LTD

in Holt Road, Cromer. The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public 8.30am -5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10am-5pm on Wednesdays; and 8.30am-4.30pm on Fridays.

NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit Stripey and the Mouse from gallery, and in turn provides staff ‘Come Back on Saturday’ and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of artists’ work. Six exhibitions are held annually.

Smiley Charlotte takes home the top award from Poultec Training!

On Tuesday 17 July, Charlotte Hall, 23, General Assistant at Mundesley Medical Centre was presented with two awards by Poultec Training Limited at their annual awards ceremony. Nominations are made in three sections with the tutor, employer and the student all required to demonstrate why the student (from 3000 students) should even be nominated to attend the ceremony, let alone win an award.

Sophie MacArdule, Charlotte’s tutor said “I am absolutely delighted that Charlotte Hall has won the prestigious Apprenticeship of the Year Award together with winning her category of Level 3 Business Administration. She has worked hard throughout her course and is a forward-thinking and pro-active member of the team at Mundesley Medical Practice; striving to improve and implement real changes to better the service provided to all users at the surgery. She is truly well-deserving of these awards.”

Charlotte started at the practice as an Apprentice Receptionist nearly 3 years ago and on completion was offered a permanent job at the practice where she has continued to develop her skills across reception, 8

administration and dispensary. Charlotte works closely with the management team helping to

Charlotte said “I feel very proud of myself for winning both awards and incredibly happy. I can’t stop smiling. It has helped me to see that all my hard work has not gone unnoticed and has paid off. I feel very grateful for all the support I received, especially from Linda Marquis, Managing Partner and Sophie McArdle my tutor”.

Dear Margaret,

It begins as a wind-blown roughness on the air (or is it distant snarling?). A tearing sound, the sibilant sad sigh of the longsuffering sky fabric being torn asunder, with which we have become so familiar. A passing jet plane, one supposes (yesterday I counted over a dozen vapour trails all running in the same direction). But no, it is not passing; It is advancing; it is growing; it is menacing; it overwhelms one’s hearing and one’s consciousness. There is nothing but this overpowering, black NOISE, and it is accompanied by deep rumbling shock-waves-felt rather than heard-reminiscent of an earthquake; it threatens to bring the house down. One cannot think, one cannot escape this terrifying visitation from on high.

At last it recedes incrementally. One breathes again and relinquishes the physical pain, - but only briefly, it is coming back. There are more than one of them; they are circling. The NOISE returns with full force. Oh help! This is unbearable, how many times?

Eventually it does recede, though not completely. The distant snarling persists. One is held in the thrall of fear.

If these abusive visitations are being perpetrated by The United States air force based at Lakenheath – (the last remaining USA base in this country) – then we have to let them know clearly that this is no way to treat the inhabitants of their host country, and that these unacceptable practices must stop forthwith and completely.

RIP CURRENTS

Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. Lifeguards will show you where you can avoid rips but if you do get caught in one: stay calm – don’t panic if you can stand, wade don’t swim keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float raise your hand and shout for help never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore if you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

SWIMMING, SURFING AND BODYBOARDING

Surfing GB is the national governing body for surfing and bodyboarding. For further information, accredited training centres and recognised schools visit surfinggb.com or contact 07711 263584.

STAYING SAFE

Do: follow the advice of the lifeguards & wear your leash so you don’t lose your board Do: check your equipment for damage before use Do: bodyboard between the red and yellow flags Do: surf, between the black and white flags Do: consider other water users Do: learn surf etiquette and rights of way. Don’t: ditch your board – it will keep you afloat in an emergency and make you easier to find Don’t: go alone Don’t: go in if the conditions are above your capability.

TIDES

A beach can seem like a vast playground, but the tide can come in surprisingly quickly. Many lifeboat and lifeguard rescues are to people getting cut off by the rising water. To prevent this happening to you, get local tidal information from the Harbour Master or the Tourist Information Centre. Always keep a look out for the direction of the tide while on the beach. Just be aware ... and if in doubt, move out!

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY YIELDS FUNDS FOR CHARITY

When Paul and Christine Damen recently celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in Paston, they requested that guests not bring presents but donate to local charity.

Cheque presentation to ‘Friends of Mundesley Lifeboat’ - L to R – Jan Francis, Christine and Paul Damen, Wendy Copping (Chair of ‘Friends’), Di Spray, Liz Payne

As a result, ÂŁ155 was raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and ÂŁ175 for the Mundesley Independent Volunteer Lifeboat.

Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat is one of over 35 independent lifeboat stations nationally (ie not affiliated to the RNLI), being one of four within the county of Norfolk. It has ‘Declared Facility’ status, which means that HM Coastguard will call the lifeboat and crew to emergencies in the same way as other emergency services. The crew are trained and equipped for sea and flood rescue situations and work closely with other lifeboats and rescue helicopters.

Mr and Mrs Damen will be running the Lifeboat’s bookstall along with other helpers at the annual Mundesley ‘Boat Day’ in Gold Park on Sunday 12 August. Further details of this fundraising event can be found at www.mundesleylifeboat.co.uk, along with more information about the service and its supporters. Older Generation Celebrate Norfolk Day with Ambitious New Arts Commission

Older people from across the county celebrated all things Norfolk on this year’s Norfolk Day, by visiting the stunning nature reserve at Cley, North Norfolk to gather inspiration for an ambitious new commission based on the Norfolk landscape, run by rural arts charity Creative Arts East.

Creative Arts East have been running their unique, flagship programme ‘Our Day Out’ – regular music & dance workshops for older people - for over 2 years, and this is their most ambitious commission to date. They have commissioned acclaimed local artists Chappell to work with the ‘Our Day Out’ participants, to create a movement and sound piece informed by stimuli from their trip to Cley on Friday 27 July.

This commission champions all things Norfolk – it celebrates the beauty of Norfolk’s coastal landscape, it employs and encourages local arts practitioners to develop their skills in working with vulnerable older people (including those living with dementia and other health conditions), and it enables older residents to share what Norfolk means to them and be inspired creatively by the county in which they live. The found sounds and sights collected from the outing on Norfolk Day will inspire and shape the forthcoming workshops that Glass House Dance and Les Chappell will hold twice-monthly in Dereham, Attleborough,

Thetford, Watton, North Walsham and Wells-next-the-Sea.

Elly Wilson, the Deputy Director at Creative Arts East said “We’ve been championing work and research around arts, health and wellbeing for many years and we’re so pleased that the ‘Our Day Out’ programme has allowed us to break down as many barriers that older people experience to participation in the arts as possible, and measure the impact this has on people’s lives, including increasing individuals’ wellbeing and decreasing social isolation. This commission is a great opportunity for us to encourage home-grown creativity by both supporting local artists and engaging Norfolk’s older generation in creative activities.”

The special series of workshops will culminate in a celebration of the music and movement they have created with over 100 older people who are part of the programme returning to the Cley Wildlife Centre, sharing their take on Norfolk landscapes on the 31st October.

Exploring North Norfolk to feed Norfolk’s strays

Animal Magic Dog Club explorer walks have proved very popular with our members giving them the opportunity to be guided around some of the best dog walks in North Norfolk while at the same time raising money to help feed the dogs that Norfolk Strays rescue from death row.

So far this year we’ve been able to deliver a staggering 600 kilos of dog food to Norfolk Strays raised by donations from these walks, in addition some members have also donated extra food, treats and bedding which we’ve delivered too. As dog lovers we are delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile cause, without them dogs who remain unclaimed from the dog pound after seven days would be put to sleep.

We seem to be experiencing extremes of weather going from the beast from the east to glorious sunshine with a short spring in between. It’s so important to consider your dog during this hot weather as they can suffer from heatstroke very quickly which can prove fatal. Always try to walk your dog at the cooler times of the morning or evening, never allow them to exercise excessively and carry water with you allowing them frequent small amounts. If your dog is retrieving a toy from the sea or splashing around in the paddling pool, be careful of water intoxication - ingesting too much water is also dangerous. And please, don’t leave your dog in the car.

For anyone interested in joining our explorer walks you can find more information on our website www.animal-magix.co.uk where you can also find details of classes available in our fun packed new term starting w/c 13th August.

Enjoy the good weather and walks with your dog, have a safe and happy summer from all at Animal Magic Dog Club.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Last time I mentioned some of the cats in care that were not on our waiting list and am now happy to report that Rosy, Max and Mittens have been given clean bills of health and are available for adoption. Mittens did need to have several teeth removed but is already feeling more comfortable. Charley, the other cat mentioned who has skin problems is making good progress and will hopefully also be available for adoption soon.

Two of the kittens mentioned last time have not responded well to socialisation and will now be looking for a new home either on a farm or stables. Before they leave us, they will be vaccinated, chipped and neutered and the new home will be inspected to ensure they have a warm place to sleep and will be fed each day. We also insist they are confined for the first few weeks to ensure they are familiar with their new surroundings and are aware that they will be fed on a regular basis. We know from past experience that once they have settled and have their freedom, they are much happier and they learn to trust their carers and in time will be happy to have contact with them. Two of the other kittens that came in about the same time, also from an outside situation, have responded well to contact with their fosterer and are now very playful and loving. Unlike the previous two these kittens were not aggressive but just very scared when they first arrived.

The Cats Protection Veterinary Department are always looking for ways to ensure that the cats in our care receive the very best treatment and, as well as advising on general matters (flea and worm treatment for instance) they, from time to time, suggest improvements we can make for cats in our care, or who we are helping. One recent suggestion was to offer additional pain relief for cats needing an operation, either routine neutering or for any other operation needing an anaesthetic. As a consequence, we are hoping to introduce a system with all five PROVIDING FRIENDLY, EXPERIENCED &

vets we use to ensure the cats have pain relief for two days (or more if the vets feel it is necessary) after their operation. The Bridge and Westover have already agreed to administer this on our behalf and both Rosy and Mittens came back with the medication after their operations. Once we have the procedure in place we will Mittens, a very friendly cat discuss with the other three vets who just loves attention and cuddles that we use. Pictured is Julia - she came in with a nasty rear right leg injury, in fact there wasn't much left and the bone was jutting out so she was straight away admitted to Westover Vets where it was successfully amputated. With pain relief & antibiotics she is recovering well and on her check-up visit, the vets were pleased how well it had healed in such a short space of time. It's very neat and doesn't stop her moving about quickly!

She would not be safe to be released back into the wild in case she suffered another leg injury that would make her unable to move. So when she's completely recovered she will be in an enclosed area where I will be able to monitor her.

Special thanks go to Julia's finders who generously paid for all her treatment.

Thanks to a Go-Fund-Me page I have purchased two vital pieces of equipment - an incubator & a nebuliser.

I still have abandoned hoglets coming in - it's certainly been my busiest summer to date!

Show us your skeletons!

Fiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr

If there is one thing we do very well in the UK it is royal pageantry, and the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle did not disappoint. The event had something to please all the crowds, from ardent royalists to celebrity spotters and those who just like to watch a good parade.

Of course, any royal wedding gives rise to months of allegation and gossip in the tabloid press, and this was no exception. Without even trying to pay attention, it was hard to avoid the embarrassing revelations about Ms Markle’s family members: her difficult relationship with her father; the collusion of her half-sister with paparazzi photographers; her half-brother’s open letter to the Prince warning him against the marriage; and the disappointment of the siblings that they weren’t invited to attend.

But stories of this sort are nothing new, and we don’t have to delve very far into the history of the royals themselves to find some ‘family dysfunctionality’. In the relatively recent past we have seen the abdication of a king in connection with his marriage to an unpopular American divorcee, alleged scandals surrounding Princess Margaret, and of course the divorce of Prince Harry’s own parents and revelations about their unhappy marriage and extra-marital affairs. We are told that Queen Victoria’s children fell out with her as well as with each other, and further back

still, the Prince can claim descent from some who not only disliked their relatives but had them put to death.

In fact, if we are completely honest, which of us doesn’t have the odd skeleton in the family cupboard? Even if family relations currently seem harmonious, a little time spent researching the family tree will often turn up something embarrassing.

When clients come to see us to prepare Wills, they are often very reticent about family problems. Understandably, people are reluctant to disclose details of, for example, squabbling children, ungrateful grandchildren or long-standing rifts with siblings. However, it is very important that we are given all the relevant background information, so we can advise you properly about the distribution of your estate, the possibility of challenges, and what can be done to prevent them.

A disgruntled relative may be able to make a claim against the estate if they are left out of a Will or receive less than they were expecting. If you tell us who they are and why they are being treated differently, we can minimise the chances of them succeeding. Detailed attendance notes on our files, confirmation of your mental capacity and confidential letters explaining your actions will all help.

No doubt the new Duchess of Sussex’s family

issues will soon be forgotten by the tabloids in favour of more up to date scandal. And thankfully, most of us will never suffer public revelations about our own problems. But please remember to tell your solicitor about your skeletons before you put them all back in the cupboard!

Cromer Crowds enjoy RNLI Lifeboat Day

With plenty of attractions along the Esplanade, visitors to Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Day enjoyed lots to see and hear.

Live music was provided by the Sheringham Shantymen in the main boathouse at the end of the pier before the Annual Lifeboat Service led by the Cawston Band.

Earlier Zingaro Blue performed at the entrance to the pier. With three performances, listeners were treated to music associated with the Cromer Lifeboat History as well as popular songs.

The beautiful weather combined with the crowds of people walking along the promenade meant that all the stall holders did a roaring trade all day. There were many activities to wow the crowds including an afternoon display by both of Cromer RNLI’s lifeboats. The boats were joined by Sheringham RNLI to the delight of the assembled crowds. The mini lifeboat was very popular with younger visitors.

Richard Leeds, Cromer RNLI Operations

Manager said ‘I would like to thank all the many generous people who attended and helped us raise a great deal of money. It is always a popular event and visitors come long distances to have a great day out, support local traders and watch the lifeboat displays’.

Building Excellence award win for North Norfolk District Council

The council took the top prize in the Best Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team category – a prestigious category that recognises the work of the council with its customers to deliver successful projects. It reflects a team effort between a private company and the public sector.

Next stop will be the national grand final in London North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has scooped an award at the 2018 East Anglia Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards.

NNDC picked up the award at a ceremony held in the impressive surroundings of King's College, Cambridge, and will now see its entry put forward to the Grand Finals, which will be held in London in November.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of building control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards. The awards, for which there are 14 categories, are a celebration of excellence in the construction industry and of quality and compliance with building regulations. The East Anglia awards cover Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex.

North Norfolk District Council continues its crackdown on illegal rubbish dumping

North Norfolk District Council has successfully brought another prosecution for fly-tipping, with covert CCTV surveillance helping to secure the convictions.

Darren Pasque, who trades as Tree Matters, based in Holt Road, Gresham, and his nephew Christopher pleaded guilty to the offences at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on 12 July.

NNDC brought the prosecution following a complaint of illegal dumping of green waste on Salthouse Heath. The subsequent installation of cameras at the heath caught the Pasques carrying out the fly-tipping.

Darren Pasque pleaded guilty to two offences of depositing waste on May 23 and June 7. Christopher Pasque pleaded guilty to a charge of being the owner of a vehicle from which waste was deposited between March and June.

In court, Darren Pasque claimed that his customer had led him to believe he was allowed to dump the green waste on the heath, but the Pasques were told during sentencing they had been reckless and foolish by relying on the word of someone comparable to a “bloke down the pub”.

Darren Pasque was fined £400, with a Victim Surcharge of £30 and a contribution to costs of £534.25. Christopher Pasque was fined £130, with a Victim Surcharge of £30 and a contribution to costs of £534.25.

Where are the Children?

Where are the children who came to play, Who ran round the garden on a fine summer’s day. The noise of their laughter, shouts and cheers Filled the garden with sounds good to hear. Round and round the summerhouse they went Playing games to their hearts’ content. They loved the swing with its orange seat ‘Push us higher’ they cried ‘this is great’. Biscuits and drink as they sat down for a rest The grown-ups all smiling, this is the best. So where are the children as they rode on their way Calling ‘paint the swing red next time we pass by’. One far away and two others nearby ‘Do come again soon’ their grandparents cry. Jean Trower North Walsham Times 548 August 11th 2018

Non-surgical face lift available at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Is it possible to have great results and a face lift without surgery? “If you had asked this question a few years ago- I would have said no. But today, in 2018, I can say yes” says Dr Gheyi, Medical Director at the Coltishall Clinic.

A face lift only tightens loose skin, it does not replace lost volume from the face which is probably the most important component of facial ageing. It will not improve skin texture or tone either. We are increasingly using volumisation of the face in addition to skin tightening which if performed without volume restoration gives a tight but not a natural look. I prefer a natural look for my patients.

We are very impressed by the latest offering in the restylane range Restylane Volyme. “I have not seen anything like it”. He says. It lifts your face in an instant and the results are great. It is being hailed as something of a breakthrough. It is performed under local anaesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. You can then walk away with a rejuvenated natural look and years taken off your face. As it is a deeper filler, there is usually no bruising or redness.

It is an alternative to permanent cheek implants which can be problematic as they sometimes cause infection or move, creating asymmetry in the face. Although fat can be used to transfer into the face and add volume, deep filler is the only method available to achieve a similar result without the need for surgery.

Restylane Volyme is the brand name for an injectable form of hyaluronic acid specially formulated for facial contouring. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that is found in the connective tissue of our skin and along with collagen forms the building blocks of healthy tissues. As it is totally natural component of our skin, no allergy test is required. Restylane is

the most popular facial filler in the world today and has been used in over 15 million treatments. It has a proven safety record. The result from the treatment is immediate and can last more than a year.

It is different from other fillers which are commonly uses to soften lines and wrinkles. Restylane Volyme is injected in a deeper plane to achieve a lifting and filling effect on cheeks and chin.

Another exciting development is the use of botox to achieve a defined outline of the jaw. The so called ‘Nefertiti lift’. He also uses these for eyebrow lift to correct drooping eyebrows. A combination of these procedures and other non surgical tools is now capable of producing remarkable results without going under the knife. Everyone is not suitable for these procedures and as we each have our unique features and requirements we tailor our treatments and pick and choose best options from our increasing number of non-surgical treatments.

Major step forward for new £10 million Sheringham Leisure Centre

A project to build a multi-million pound, state of the art leisure facility in Sheringham has taken a major step forward.

The planning application for the Sheringham Leisure Centre has been submitted and will be considered in the coming weeks.

North Norfolk District Council's cabinet agreed £10.7m of funding for the new leisure and fitness centre to replace the existing facility, Splash, in December 2017.

The centre will include a main 25 metre pool, a 13 metre learner pool with an adjustable depth floor, a bright and colourful splash pad for children, fitness suite and café.

There will also be accessible changing rooms, inflatable sessions in the main pool, community rooms, multi-purpose studios and a spin studio.

The project will ensure the provision of leisure and

22

fitness facilities for local communities and visitors to north Norfolk is secured for the future. Splash will remain open while the new leisure centre is built on a different part of the site. The leisure centre is due to open in late 2020.

Splash at Sheringham was opened in May 1988. A condition survey conducted last year highlighted an urgent need to invest in a new facility to ensure access to leisure services is secured for the future.

Working with partners including Sport England, the Council is seeking to increase participation in sport which will contribute to an improvement in social and cultural benefits. The social and fitness spaces will help put the facility at the heart of the community.

NNDC-owned land adjacent to the new facility will be subject to enabling development which will contribute to the funding of the new leisure facility.

The leisure centre supports North Norfolk District Council’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its residents.

The construction of a new facility will result in significant economic benefits both during and post completion. These include job creation for local people during the construction period and longer term employment and opportunities for volunteering once the site has opened for business.

North Norfolk District Council has appointed Saunders Boston Architects and a full design team to develop the new facility, which is also the subject of a funding bid to Sport England.

A community funded skate park is currently situated on the land and will be relocated elsewhere on the site to enable development.

To find out more, log on to www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/ projects/sheringham-leisure-centre/, which includes plans, background information and a virtual ‘walk through’ video of the new leisure centre.

This Saturday 11 August sees the first of three pre-season friendlies when Holt are due at Scottow. Southwold are scheduled to visit a week later and Fakenham on Wednesday 22 August.

The format for these games had not been finalised at the time of writing but spectators are very welcome. Attendance at the Tuesday and Thursday evening training sessions has been good with some new faces. More than 60 players from across the Club were there for a session (see picture) led by England and Leicester Tigers scrum half Ben Youngs, himself a former North Walsham Youth player.

The Club were very proud when one of their current Youth players, sixteen year old Jamie Hooker, was selected as Eastern Counties Young Rugby Ambassador of the Year. He received the prestigious award in recognition of his voluntary work and the way he promotes rugby. As he moves into senior rugby he plans to get some coaching qualifications so enabling him to volunteer to assist coaching one of the Youth or Mini sides.

“Cor blast it mother, do we need all this” Said dad eyeing the pile within reach, “We het ter tak it orl,” she say, “If we're gooing fer t' day on the beach”

Meanwhile 40 youngsters signed on for the recent week long Summer Camp led by Assistant Coach and Vikings' regular James Knight who also coaches at Leicester Tigers' Academy. Many were new to the sport and hopefully some will be joining the Youth or Minis when they start on 2 September.

The Vikings League season starts on 1 September with a home fixture versus Fullerians, one of last year's most improved teams. Both the Raiders and Warriors seasons begin a week later.

Cricket

Paul Scrivener

One of life’s more entertaining events, Is cricket played on the green. It’s a way for people to get some fresh air, Meet their friends, or just let off steam!

Two teams, dressed in white, toss a coin for the right To decide who will bat and who’ll field. Then they play cricket with gusto and verve, So the winning team will be revealed. As always, an audience gathers around, To support both the teams who will play. A good natured crowd sit in deckchairs and hats, All kinds of outfits on display!

They clap and they cheer their favourite team, Whenever they score any runs. Then they moan and groan, their heads in their hands, If the other side also gets some. Wives and girlfriends provide some refreshment, In the pavilion, they lay out the spread. Cakes and sandwiches make a wonderful treat, Which all vanish, as everyone’s fed. Then back they go to finish the game. What a wonderful day they’ve all had! Then winners and losers will meet in the pub, To replay every ball, good or bad!
