Experts from the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust are inviting the public to join them on 15 and16 September for a Walk and Water guided tour.
The trips will begin with a visit to two locks at Swafield which lie on private land along the 19th century waterway.
Walkers will then follow the canal for three miles to Ebridge Mill pond, passing many interesting features along the way including a Norfolk Wildlife Trust woodland, bridges, a former canal-side pub, evidence of wartime defences, and the restored Bacton Wood lock.

May I respond to Anne Griffiths and Derick Grey (NW Times 549 25.8.18) through your column? Clearly they both win first prize for their patriotism as was appropriate to the first six years of the 1940s (having been born in the 1920s, I was there too). But is that what we need now? Of course there was incredible courage and self-sacrifice then (most particularly in the Merchant Navy which kept us all from starvation). ‘Brexit’ would be the most tragic betrayal of all that. Now, war planes will not defend us from present dangers because they cannot counter terrorism or cyber sabotage (eg of nuclear power-stations). Mention of specific aircraft reminds me how the scream of a descending stick of bombs could be mistaken for the ringing note of a diving Spitfire. I am convinced (with hindsight, I admit) that our politicians had got things hopelessly wrong and inflicted grotesque agony and/or death on millions, gratuitously. If we have learnt anything from that bitter experience it is that the best defence of our freedom lies in the prevention of war ie in our membership of the great peace project, The European Union. Yours sincerely, David Correa-Hunt

Pigney’s Wood Big Sit by Lin Pateman NENBC
Big thanks to all for turning up and making it a most enjoyable event on the Club calendar.
After many weeks of dropping off posters and contacting publications, individuals and organisations to help publicise, the morning was finally here!
Loading two cars and four trips up and down the canal bank, all the gear for Team Pigney’s Wood Big Sit was in situ for the start.
From 5.30am we started the list and the dawn chorus from the sedge, cetti’s and reed warblers in the reed bed alone drowned out a lot of birdsong in the surrounding area.
The first 30 birds on the list were recorded by 6.40am. The day produced 52 species in all, sadly no local cuckoo, though it was all good fun with everybody checking the list on the board every time a bird was called.
We had fabulous views of butterflies with brimstone, orange tip, peacock, tortoiseshell, small white, large white, comma, green-veined white, speckled wood and common blue; all close by. Other wildlife included roe deer and sticklebacks, not together! The weather was glorious and brightened the whole experience and folk were in no hurry to leave the site.
I, however, had another deadline to meet, a secret mission and with Sheila as my valiant chauffeuse and official photographer, we were able to visit Felbrigg and Blickling.
The excitement of the day was added to, with NENBC supporting BBC Norfolk Treasure Quest (again) with The Treasure this time! The official green chair with The Envelope secreted, was moved up to the gate to help, however the team were 4 minutes short of reaching it by the timeout. This meant we only had a few seconds on air to talk about the Club but we happily handed over a gift of our ‘The Birds of Felbrigg’ publication to the crew of Anna Perrott and Wally Webb and enjoyed a good chat and photo session. We left with apologies for their ‘fail’ and the promise of more future air time which is great for NENBC.
Then it was off to meet Tom, The Academy Ranger at Blickling Park. There was a queue for the car park and luckily a space was found for us right next to the ranger’s buggy and he just happened to be heading off back to the lake so we were given an off-road ride, there and back! Nick was holding the fort from dawn and the site was hotting up in the full early afternoon sun, with the birds going for a siesta. It was
wonderful to see great crested grebe with young on the lake. Big thanks to Nick, Tom and all at Blickling for taking part.
Back to Pigney’s Wood for afternoon tea and cake from the car-boot cafÊ, which was relocated to the circle and kept us going until supper time.
What a tremendous day - made up for being away last year!

‘Old for new to make a difference’ Rotary call
Rotarians in North Walsham are working with the local charity The Benjamin Foundation to assist young people, moving from sheltered accommodation, to set up their own homes for independent living. So how can you help?
On Thursday 13 September between 10am and 2pm Rotarians will be manning a collection point in the approach to St Nicholas’ Church from the Market Place in North Walsham to receive donations of good quality used utensils and household goods to make up into packs of essentials to help equip the young people for moving into their first homes.
Talk to us:
ABOUT YOUR SUMMER 2018 ESCAPE
John Watts, President of the Rotary Club of North Walsham, says “The packs will make a real contribution. By helping us in this way your surplus goods will support young people, who have not had the greatest start in life to date, to move onto the next stage in their lives. This is very exciting for them and a great project to support: your ‘old’ will become their ‘new’ and will make a big difference.

North Walsham Town Twinning visit to Friesenried, Germany - Our 2018 Adventure
We set off from the North Walsham Community Centre, this happy band of 27, full of anticipation little realising the ‘adventure’ which lay ahead.
Actually our final group consisted of 29 with pick ups on our way to Norwich and others travelling by camper van so as to enjoy some extra days after our stay. What a wise move that was!
After an excellent to the minute flight to Munich we were met by some of our hosts with our coach for the week driven by Matilda who deserves a mention. Onward to Friesenried to be greeted at Blöcktach community centre with a brass band reception and much appreciated food. All excellent stuff. Greetings and speechifying over we went to our hosts’ houses for free time etc.
Our first trip out was to the mountains in the Alps where we enjoyed walks, views and the culinary delights of a mountain ‘hut’ which equals food and beer. We were warned beforehand to take boots, anoraks, survival packs but this all seemed a bit superfluous in 34 degree heat, where a parasol and string vest would have been very apt! Still it was a lovely day.
On Saturday we travelled to Augsburg, Bavaria’s third largest city for a guided walk and free time in the city. Of special interest was the ‘Fuggerei’ built by reportedly the richest man in the world at the time as the probable first example of social housing. Still in use under special criteria and a living museum.
On return to Friesenried we helped them dispose of their first prize win for the best Maibaum
(Maypole) which depicts Bavaria, the local area and all the clubs and guilds of the town. Well worth seeing as the description Maypole does not do them justice. First prize by the way was a quantity of beer donated by the local brewery. Sunday is always a free day and many were taken out, wined and dined with friends and neighbours or just walked and relaxed.
Monday, our last full day with our hosts saw us head off to the fairy tale castle of King Ludwig the 2nd, Neuschwanstein. Imagine Walt Disney’s Castle and you will get the picture. Sadly very much a big money spinner and run to such a tight schedule, so as to push the thousands of visitors through as quickly as possible, that it was difficult to really stand and admire it all. This being our final evening we were hosted to a meal in the local Guesthouse, for more speeches, picture show of European day
North Walsham Times 550 September 8th 2018
followed by music and finally ‘Auld lang Syne’.
Tuesday was time to say farewell until 2019 with hugs and kisses, enough to last until next year anyway and off we went with Matilda to the Airport having a quick break in Mindelheim on the way.
Deposited, bus gone, into check in, so far so good. It was not long after this that the ‘adventure’ reared its ugly head. Firstly we were told of a two hour delay quickly followed by those dreaded words, ‘Flight Cancelled’. Due to storms, air traffic control problems and strikes. Lucky us. I must say that Easyjet did their best but with so many stranded people to organise all we needed was time. A hotel was quickly sorted for us but the problem was finding enough seats for our large party and we had to wait until Friday for a flight and then to Gatwick. I must say that the hotel, Easyjet and their associated agency staff were excellent and we were well looked after. Marett’s Chariots even rearranged picking us up (in a bus and not by chariot). I’m applying for a job in the travel agents after all of this!
Norfolk Day occurred during our visit and to celebrate the Friesenrieders flew the Norfolk Flag from their Community Centre.
Anyway, it was fun, a lot of stiff upper lippery was on view and I look forward to our next adventure. A big thank you to anyone who helped with this visit.
Interested? Then please come to the AGM in St. Benet’s Hall on Friday 5 October, 6.30pm for 7pm or ring Steve on 01953 607119 or Dianne on 01692 402726.

New Stages currently runs the town’s Pop Up People’s Theatre, North Norfolk Youth Theatre and North Walsham People’s Choir. It was feedback from the choir members that inspired Joseph Ballard, director of New Stages, to set up the new group. Joseph “We know that singing and taking part in creative activity and the arts is a powerful tool to help develop the mind and body. Most importantly it can make us happy! Our choir members always report back the positivity of singing at our choir sessions each Tuesday night and our new group will look at other things aside from just singing. It’s about having a go at something different whilst embracing how we feel and how we can share our experiences in a safe and enjoyable way.”
The new group, called Creative Wednesdays, will provide a relaxed atmosphere for participants to try something different. Activities will range from arts and crafts, singing, drama, music and film and even food tasting. Activities will be based on participant feedback and ideas and will be planned in advance, so participants know what to expect at each session. Sessions will be led by Joseph Ballard and occasionally assisted by guest speakers and workshop leaders.
Creative Wednesdays will meet every
Wednesday of September and from October will meet twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday 2.30pm - 4pm, meeting at the Pop Up Theatre venue at the Black Swan in the town centre. The cost is £4 per session, which includes a hot drink and cake. Participants can come along to as many sessions as they wish and there is no ongoing commitment required from participants. Those interested can call 01692 434112.
More information about the classes and upcoming shows can be found at

and from show leaflets, which can be found around town in shops, cafes, the Showcase Gallery and the library.

Drag, dresses and drama at North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre
Glamour, song and theatrical anecdotes will fill the stage of North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre on 22 September as it is handed over to the larger-than-life presence of thespian Titania Trust, all in aid of raising funds for the community venture in the form of the People’s Theatre.
The People’s Theatre launched in October last year, with the aim to present top shows in the town centre, having made their home in the function hall of the Black Swan on Black Swan Loke. Their previous shows, such as the Christmas pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk and new drama Bingo Wings, received positive feedback and their next offering is more akin to the TV specials of ‘An Evening with…’.
Titania Trust is known to be an international songstress, whose credits include shows across the UK, Europe and cruise ships. There are many more stories of Titania’s fame but, as she has learnt, some of her stories have got her into trouble – especially when it comes to revealing secrets. Titania has also performed in North Walsham before, namely a previous cabaret evening and played the Evil Queen in Beauty and the Beast in 2014. She has also supported a number of charity events across the country.
Audiences have not quite known what to make of Titania Trust. Part drag, part stage veteran and part seductress – the evening promises a mix of comedy, story and song.
In an exclusive interview, Miss Titania Trust reminded us “I’m delighted to be performing in North Walsham to offer my support for the People’s Theatre venture. It’s so important to support local theatre – it can make us think, make us reflect upon the world around us, make us happy and make us sad… it’s made me the talk of every town I’ve entertained!”
A variety of songs will be presented from jazz, pop and stage musicals and the show will also feature local young singer Megan Howlett. Joseph Ballard, founding director of New Stages and the People’s Theatre will also take to the stage.
Doors open at 7pm with cabaret-style seating, ready for the show at 8pm. The bar will be open all evening serving drinks and cocktails and smart dress is encouraged.
Joseph Ballard, director of New Stages said “I’m very pleased that we have the incredible force of Titania to join us here at the People’s Theatre to support us with what we do. We rely upon the goodwill of artists and the community to keep us going – it’ll be a great night out!”

Second GoGoHare becomes a permanent citizen Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent of North Norfolk group at NNDC, exclaimed: “Lepus manere!” originally agreed to buy A Hare Through the Seasons and to sponsor Lepus. But following widespread support for Lepus, the council will now be purchasing both hares outright so they can continue as attractions in their respective locations and act as permanent advertisements of the great work of Break, which is the charity behind the GoGoHares.
It means Lepus will now not be moved following the forthcoming GoGoHares public auction.
Martin Green, fundraising manager of Break, said: “What a legacy to have this beautiful mosaic sculpture as a permanent fixture in North Norfolk and as a reminder of the GoGoHares trail, celebrating 50 years of Break. We look forward to working closely with the district council in the future and are grateful for its continued support.”
NNDC is particularly pleased to be supporting Break given its local roots and the fantastic work it does with children and young people across the district and the wider region. Break began life in Sheringham 50 years ago, and local people continue to feel a strong affiliation to the charity and its work.
North Norfolk District Council secures the future of Lepus in North Walsham
North Norfolk has become the full-time home of two of the fabulous GoGoHares who have taken the region by storm.
A Hare Through the Seasons, who has proven to be a star attraction at the sensory garden in Holt Country Park, is to be joined as a permanent North Norfolk resident by Lepus, who has been wowing residents and visitors in North Walsham over the summer.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC)
The council will be supporting Break in other ways, too, including giving the charity some volunteer days.
Cllr John Lee, Leader of NNDC and of the Conservative group at the council, said: “We're delighted to secure Lepus for North Walsham. It has become quite an attraction while providing support for a great local charity.”
Cllr Eric Seward, Deputy Leader of the Lib Dem group at NNDC and a Member for North Walsham, said: “This is very welcome news as it is what North Walsham district councillors had pressed for. Lepus has attracted a lot of local support and become a valued feature in the town.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Charley, the cat mentioned last time, has had a recurrence of his skin problem and is now receiving further treatment. Until this has been completely cleared up he will not be available for adoption.
Kittens, Jessie, Joffrey and Laine have left for new homes and cats, Will and Jazz have been reserved. We have also had people contacting us who may be interested in giving homes to Bobo, Millicent, Mittens and Rosy. Stephanie will be able to give them more information on the cats when they call, as it is important to ensure they have the right cat for their circumstances and to make sure the new home is not too close to their old one. With the summer holidays ending, and a more bearable temperature, we are hoping that there will be lots more enquiries from people wishing to offer our cats and kittens new homes.
When the cats come into care, we ask the person handing them in to give as much information as they can about the cats. This helps us to identify the type of home they will need and whether or not they are likely to enjoy living with other cats, or with dogs and also whether they would be suitable for homes with young children. They can also advise on what food they have been eating and whether or not they have been on a special diet or have ongoing health problems. This information helps us to find the right home for each cat. Obviously, when a cat is handed in by someone other than its previous owner, or because it is a stray, this is not always possible. It usually takes a few days for the cat to settle and adapt to coming to live in one of our pens, which must feel very strange to them, especially if they come from a house and have had free access to going outside. It is not the natural environment for them and some adapt better than others. Some are quite confident and actually blossom while in care. Others, because they are confined will not show their true nature until they have settled in their new home. There is a home out there for them all and Stephanie will be able to identify which ones will suit your lifestyle.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with Rosy, has finished her maternity duties any other enquiries. and is now available for adoption The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Titch, Joe and Digger came into my care after their mum had died. Titch had a bad case of lungworm and was rapidly losing weight. She only weighed 90 gms. As lungworm is contagious, all three were treated and had a course of antibiotics.
Lungworm is very often fatal, especially for hoglets, and they have a long way to get to release weight, but I am pleased to say that all three are still with me and slowly gaining weight.

Enjoy a fun family day out… that won’t cost you the earth! Greenbuild is back 8 and 9 September for its 14th year at Felbrigg Hall
Greenbuild, the region’s leading free, familyfriendly, green lifestyle event, and hub for all things sustainable, energy efficient and local, is back for the 14th year running.
This year’s Greenbuild event, sponsored by Crayford and Abbs (gold sponsor) and Floodsense (bronze sponsor), promises to be one of the biggest ever, as organisers North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) confirmed that up to 100 exhibitors, including the ever popular craft and farmers’ market, catering area for visitors to enjoy a bite to eat and children’s entertainers, have so far signed up to attend the event in the grounds of the National Trust’s venue Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer, over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 8 and 9 September.
Greenbuild is a fantastic event for those who want to find out how to lead a greener lifestyle. There will be exhibitors of green technologies like Solar PV panels, biomass boilers, ground and air source heat pumps, electric cars and bikes and experts in local and traditional products such as heritage plastering, handmade terracotta tiles and willow basket making.
Greenbuild offers something for the whole family. There will be plenty going on to keep children entertained, including theatre shows, face painting, a free children’s quiz with fantastic prizes. The NNDC Countryside team will be offering workshops on tree identification, leaf and animal prints as well as wildlife games. There will also be plenty of food stalls to visit, all offering excellent local food and fresh, delicious homemade and organic produce.
Talks and advice from exhibitors and volunteers will cover everything from Tesla battery storage, reducing food waste, plastic pollution and growing fruit and veg in a changing climate to name but a few and a timetable for talks can be found on the Greenbuild website.
There will also be practical demonstrations and lessons for children throughout the day in basic wood carving and fire starting using flint and steel, ferro rods and bow drills.
More teams from NNDC will be there than ever before. Officers from Planning and Building Control, Environmental Protection, Elections and HR, Economic Development, Community-led Housing,
North Norfolk food and drink businesses given chance to shine
Commercial, Coastal, Revenue and Benefits, Waste and Recycling, Civil Contingencies and Leisure Sports Hubs and Clubs as well as the Countryside team will be ready to chat with visitors and answer any questions they may have and to offer advice.
And the NNDC staff won’t just be there to answer questions there will be job opportunities available for the forthcoming elections in May next year, assistance to sign up online to revenue and benefits services as well a mini election where visitors can vote for what they would like to see at next year’s Greenbuild event and vote for the Graham Allen Award winner.
Entrance and parking at Greenbuild is free. Whilst at the event, visitors can purchase a voucher for 3 bags of compost for £3 (subject to availability) which will be loaded into their cars for them on the way out of the site. Further information including a list of exhibitors and directions are available on the NNDC Greenbuild page.
New exhibitors get discount at region’s largest trade show thanks to North Norfolk District Council
North Norfolk businesses are being encouraged to show off their produce at the region’s largest food and drink trade show.
Local Flavours, which will be held at the Norfolk Showground on Wednesday 26 September will give food and drink producers the chance to show off their wares to buyers from the hospitality, catering, food retail and tourism sectors. The buyers will be both local and from further afield, with multi-national buyers as well as owners of smaller operations such as delis, farm shops and cafes.
North Norfolk District Council is supporting the event, and food and drink businesses based in the district that have not previously exhibited at Local Flavours can enjoy a discount if they take a stand.
For more information or to book a stand at Local Flavours, please contact Robert Ediker at robert@thelivelycrew.co.uk

How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child! Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
I have long used ‘King Lear’ as a metaphor for caution when carrying out succession planning. Richard Eyre’s powerful and unsettling production for the BBC reminded me of its timelessness. As it is the journalistic ‘silly season’, I hope you will allow me some licence.
Quick plot reminder : The 80-year-old King Lear decides to retire and divides his kingdom of ancient Britain among his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, according to their affection for him. Lear's older daughters give their father flattering answers and so inherit but Cordelia, Lear’s youngest and
favourite daughter, remains silent, saying that she has no words to describe how much she loves her father. Lear quickly learns that this was a bad decision. Goneril and Regan lose no time in undermining the little authority that Lear still holds. Unable to believe that his beloved daughters are betraying him, Lear slowly goes insane.
Lear is a powerful exploration of greed, love, power and mortality - all themes in the working life of the private client lawyer. Less romantic (and, thankfully, less gory) modern equivalent cases scatter the Law Reports over the centuries.
The diminished power and respect for the older person who has enjoyed ‘giving with warm hands’ on the ‘there are no pockets in shrouds’ principle is a problem.
Making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) appointing good and independent attorneys, perhaps professionals, to look after your finances, in the event of incapacity and frailty, is vital.
Using the originally-medieval device of a Trust to retain control, but not ownership, could perhaps have saved Lear. Discretionary Trusts are wonderfully flexible and allow for changing family circumstances after the giving of assets.
Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.
We should all have a well-drafted and up-todate Will.
Conversely, what about families where the elderly relative is clearly in decline? What to do? In Eyre’s production Anthony Hopkins as Lear swigged away from a hipflask. Perhaps this would explain much of Lear’s behaviour and even that decision to divide his kingdom in a spectacularly misguided bid to prevent ‘future strife’. Had he taken good legal advice, Lear would never have done it!
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.
If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01692 503081 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Local MP Urges End to North Walsham Mobile Phone Signal Delays
Liberal Democrat North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has written to BT Openreach pressing them to end delays to improving mobile phone reception in the town, and has demanded a meeting to discuss the issue.
It follows a petition signed by 265 households from the Brick Kiln estate and surrounding areas with poor mobile phone coverage asking BT to urgently connect them to the mobile phone network.
Late last year Mr Lamb’s office was informed by the mobile phone operators Vodafone and O2 that a new communications mast that they had built at the town’s Marshgate sewage works would become operational early in 2018 following work by BT to connect it to the network.
It was the result of a long campaign by residents from Marshgate to the Brick Kiln estate supported by Norman Lamb and local Councillors led by Eric Seward for better mobile reception. Six months later the mast is still not operational.
The delay has been caused by BT Openreach not being able to lay the fibre cable to connect the new mast to the network as they are still waiting to get agreement to lay the cable across private land from the owner.
Mr Lamb said "The massive petition I have received shows the strength of feeling from residents who cannot get proper mobile phone reception in their homes. It is for this reason that I have asked for a meeting with BT Openreach so that I can learn directly from them what they are doing to bring this unacceptable situation to an end."
NatWest’s Helen takes up community role in North and Central Norfolk
Helen Barwick has been appointed as NatWest Community Banker for the North and Central Norfolk region.
Through a partnership with local libraries, Helen will be based in Holt and North Walsham. Regular drop-in sessions will be held in Holt Library, every third Tuesday and North Walsham Library every third Tuesday from 11 September. Helen said “I’m excited to have the opportunity to develop a strong relationship with our customers in Norfolk, helping to ensure that NatWest remains an important part of its many thriving communities.
“In my role as Community Banker I’m looking forward to hosting regular events at local venues to help educate customers on being financially fit, training them on the different ways to bank in a digital world and how they can protect themselves from fraudsters.
As part of their role, Community Bankers : • Host regular events across the community to educate customers on being financially fit, living in the digital world and preventing fraud. • Conduct financial health checks with customers to identify opportunities to help them with new products or services appropriate to their goals, needs and priorities. • Engage with the community through a number of channels such as charity events, social groups and other community activities. • Use social media to share useful and relevant financial and digital information and tips. • Signpost or coach customers through NatWest’s online application process for new products and services, providing them with the skills to self-serve for future needs. • Help customers identify the different ways to bank, supporting them in choosing the right service options for their needs.
Turn Tail
How can you go off and leave me? Just turn tail and walk out on me? After everything I’ve done for you, To leave shows such disloyalty! When we first met, you were homeless. I welcomed you into my life. Is this the way you repay me? Your perfidy cuts like a knife! If you walk out now, then it’s over, I won’t be your personal doormat! If this is your choice, then so be it. You are a most ungrateful cat! Frances Wraight

AGE CONCERN
Dear Mrs. Smith I must object To the way you called me 'old', I really am as young as I feel, I'm strong and keen and bold My age is immaterial I still look almost young, I'm placid, meek and good-looking And still not highly strung I might veer to the right hand side And go a steady ten But I can go even faster Just like other men My eyesight is quite normal I can see for twenty feet And although I'm vegetarian I still eat lots of meat. So you see, my age is nothing Of that I am emphatic So you must stop saying that I'm old

Tackling difficult areas with fillers
Why do fillers frequently look so false? Why you need to see an experienced doctor to minimise risks of going under the needle
A few years ago the Sunday Times did an article on downside of fillers called ‘The Joker Face’. “You’ve seen this face – it’s everywhere. There’s something muzzle-like about the nose and mouth. The lips are taut and bulbous, and a little wonky when they smile. In extreme cases, the cheeks sit like ping pong balls under spongy skin, eyes peering out of puffy sockets. The ‘pillow face’, our current answer to the 1990s wind-tunnel look, is down to dermal fillers. These semi-permanent gels are injected into the lips, cheeks and the lines between the nose and the mouth in a bid for youthful plumpness. Trouble is, the result is often not eternal youth, but a face like a water-retentive lion …"
Unfortunately things have got worse with this becoming almost the normal. Facial rejuvenation is an art and a science. It requires a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, facial ageing, skin, soft tissue and bone structure. This knowledge and skill requires years of study and practice. Artful injection treatments can produce some very nice and pleasing results. ‘The results should whisper and not scream’.
The temples, chin, jawline, tear trough and forehead are difficult to inject so you need an experienced doctor to do these and not someone who injects fillers ‘on the side’. Ask your practitioner how many filler injections they do and can they show some before and after photos. When injecting fillers it is important to stay away from the important structures such as nerves and blood vessels. So a deep understanding of anatomy is essential. When the jaw angle gets blurred, it makes a huge difference in how the person is perceived. We can inject fillers to contour the jawline, angle of the jaw and chin. Botulinum toxin injections remain popular for this area as in Nefertiti lift. As we age, we start to lose a little chin projection. This can be restored using fillers.
Another area where age-related changes can be very visible is the temple. There is not only loss of fat but also loss of other soft tissues and bone. Additionally, patients can develop sun damage, skin laxity and muscle
thinning. We are trying to replace a three-dimensional, multi-structural loss with one or two injection. We can usually get most of the temporal areas filled effectively with one or two injections. That minimizes the risk of danger and produces very nice and effective yet subtle rejuvenation.
We routinely inject fillers in frown lines and forehead lines but this is a tricky area to inject-even for very experienced practitioners. A more comprehensive approach to the forehead involves three-dimensional forehead reflation. This approach differs drastically from simply filling lines because it requires placing fairly substantial amounts of filler on underlying bone while avoiding the blood vessels. This is a challenging technique that can produce beautiful results.
There is more to dermal filler injections than simple line filling. Strategic placement of small volumes can produce very nice and natural results and avoid so called ‘pillow face’. Bradfield Cricket Club opens new Clubhouse with ‘Big Society’ help
North Norfolk District Council has granted Bradfield Cricket Club £15,000 from Big Society Fund towards refurbishment work of their clubhouse
People here have worked tirelessly since to get the other funding in and then to do the work required, and the result is now here for all to see. And we have had good support from NNDC all the way, with them helping us with our cricket development plan as well.
Bradfield Cricket Club had a special guest last month before their league match against Horsford - North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Leader, Councillor John Lee, was on hand to present the Club with a plaque celebrating the Council’s £15,000 grant from its Big Society Fund.
This was the first serious fixture at the ground since Bradfield opened their refurbished clubhouse on 4 August, part of a £120,000 project to secure cricket at one of the best grounds in Norfolk.
The new clubhouse, on the edge of the pitch which Bradfield have played on since 1845, now boasts new changing facilities, toilets, kitchen, bar and social area, which together will provide better facilities, especially for children’s cricket at the Club.
Peter Murphy, Bradfield’s Chairman added “The new clubhouse here is just brilliant. It’s taken many years to get us here, but the grant from NNDC was the thing that really made people believe it was really possible.
“We are seeing many more children coming into the Club – and run cricket for all ages mainly from our events in school holidays and our coaching in local schools, and we aim to have all eleven primary schools in our local area coaching cricket within the next five years.”
North Norfolk District Council has run the Big Society Fund for six years now and it has benefitted many community groups across the District, with over £1.6m being handed out to 219 community projects in that time.
Cllr Lee, who chairs the Big Society Fund Board, said “Providing these grants is one of the best jobs I have as Leader of the Council. So many groups have benefitted from the Big Society Fund and our grant to Bradfield has enabled them to not only lever in the rest of the funding they needed, but also to get all of their own membership behind the project. Their new facility can only help the club thrive, especially with the facilities for children’s cricket so near to North Walsham.”
September is here
I am wandering through a little wood on this bright September day, my companions are grey rabbits who help me on my way. An owl swoops past me and the rowan berries fall, I see ivy growing thickly on a broken stone wall. A few bright poppies make my pathway light, and I notice that some blackberries are now plump and ripe. The leaves are changing colour, autumn is almost here, although the sun is shining there's a nip in the air. The sky is clouding over, was that a drop of rain? Never mind, I can walk this way again.

Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters is confident the Vikings will "improve as a squad" this season but won't be drawn on whether he expects an improvement on last year's 6th place.
"Training and the pre-season friendlies have gone well as has player recruitment, but we don't know the strength of other sides and injuries can change everything. It's a tough League."
Marsters' confidence is based on the knowledge he will have a bigger squad than predecessor James Brooks.
Last season he coached the Raiders and knows there are players there ready to step up, including promising youngsters such as George Isbell, George Masdin, Michael Mulhall and Frank Scott who have come through the youth sides.
Matt Hodgson's return from injury is a huge plus too. "He's our playmaker making sure we play in the right areas" says Marsters. "His absence last season was a major blow. He's a significant influence on and off the field."
