North Walsham Air Cadets Fly High this Summer

2110 Squadron Air Cadets have been busy this summer with Flight Sergeant Luca Wedge-Clarke completing the gruelling 100 mile Nijmegen March, he is now looking forward to a Junior Leaders Course. Meanwhile three cadets, Jasmin Oates, Harvey Bailey and Callum Fenn spent a week at RAF Lossiemouth.

Whilst at RAF Lossiemouth Jasmin, building on her recent flying experience, undertook training on a flight simulator earning her first set of wings which could one day lead to a pilot’s licence.

Cadets were also able to enjoy a day at the very exclusive air show at the RAF Marham Families’ Day.Remains There along with aircraftlocks of one of many the Swafield including the ever popular Red Arrows, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster they saw the newly arrived F35 Lightning II.

Last weekend cadets Lenka Hozzova, Jasmin Oates, Callum Fenn and Dylan Rayner went to Swanton Morley for training on a glider simulator. Modern simulators are extensively used in both military and civil flying training. Again, for the cadets this could be a first step for cadets to perhaps obtain their flying licences. Cdt Lenka Hozzova thought the day was a “…fantastic experience!” Continued on page 4...

Wings Appeal Success

It doesn't seem a year since I was thanking the people of North Walsham for their generosity but this year they have excelled themselves.

Our collection on behalf of the North Walsham Branch of The Royal Air Forces Association's Wings Appeal on Thursday 13 September raised the magnificent sum of £299.34p.

I must thank all those that so kindly donated but also all those that gave up their time to collect - without these volunteers, organisations like ours would not be able to continue in our endeavours to help those both retired and serving members and dependants of The Royal Air Force in need of help. Once again a big thank you to donors and collectors.

Divorcing couples forced to embellish allegations in divorce petitions

Making the decision to divorce can be an incredibly difficult one. Many couples will want the process to be as straight forward as possible at a time where emotions are running high. Unfortunately, the current legal framework can cause further complications for couples.

There is only one ground for divorce and that is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Currently, the law states that this has to be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts: "unreasonable behaviour", adultery, desertion, 2 years separation with consent, or 5 years separation. If you have not been separated for the requisite period then you have a difficult decision to make. Either you wait, or you rely upon one of the other facts which means apportioning blame to the other party. "Unreasonable behaviour" is the fact most commonly cited but by its very nature can cause a whole host of problems in the relationship. It can cause animosity, cause problems in reaching solutions in terms of the finances and children and make it difficult to end a relationship on good terms.

The case of Tini Owens has been in the media spotlight recently as she tried to divorce her husband of 40 years on the basis of his "unreasonable behaviour". The Supreme Court unanimously

rejected her arguments and concluded that his behaviour was not sufficiently unreasonable to grant a divorce. Tini was understandably devastated by this news as she now has to remain married until 2020. A recent survey has found that couples feel pressured into exaggerating allegations in a divorce petition, or to "bend the truth", so that the reasons given are more likely to be found sufficient, if challenged. This is because couples are becoming more and more concerned that a petition could be rejected by the Court as was seen in the Owens case. Contested divorce proceedings are rare. In fact less than 1% of all divorces are defended each year. This is because it can be extremely costly, complicated and many view it as unproductive. Although the number of contested cases are relatively small, people are clearly concerned about it happening. This is probably due to the widespread reporting of the Owens case.

The Owens decision has prompted debate about the appropriateness of the current legislation and the need for review. Should you be forced to stay trapped in a marriage that you consider is over even if the other party doesn't agree? The current law makes it difficult to end a relationship on good terms, due to the requirement to apportion blame. This directly conflicts with other principles in family law such as reducing confrontation and conflict and encouraging couples to talk directly to find the right

Jobs for the Autumn... Cut hedges Rotavate ga rden Cut up woo d Pressure w ash patio

solution for them.

In a recent survey of more than 1,000 divorcees, 80% said they would rather have the option of a 'no-fault' approach to divorce. More than 1 in 4 surveyed said that attributing fault caused more tension between them and their ex-partner, and reduced their previous hopes of being able to divorce in a friendly manner. Not only does the process of attributing fault add to their own anger, it can also cause upset to other parties, such as their children. If the law were to provide for 'no-fault' divorce, it may reduce bitterness between the parties meaning more amicably settlements which could save them time and money. However, some argue this approach would make the process of getting a divorce a lot easier, increasing the number of divorces and may be seen as an "easy way-out", but if the law isn't updated there may be a rise in exaggerated and embellished allegations which has its own problems! Our family law advice is bespoke, confidential and totally designed around you, helping you come to the best conclusion for both you and your family. For people with Parkinson’s singing can help to retain their voice quality and thus help them communicate with others for longer. The funding will help Playing for Cake to establish ‘Skylarks’ singing groups in North Norfolk as a well-known local ‘go-to’ service that can supplement prescribed speech therapy programmes.

REMEMBERING THE 1918 ARMISTICE

Sunday 11 November 2018 marks one hundred years precisely since the signing of the armistice that brought an end to the First World War.

In common with most rural villages, Thorpe Market lost 14 of their young men. Three are buried in the churchyard.

Many of the names on the war memorials in the church had been present in Thorpe Market for centuries. Most of them have now disappeared, in some cases as a direct result of the Great War.

We will be holding a service for Remembrance Sunday at 10.30am on 11 November.

The church has so far managed to trace living relatives for 10 of the men who died, and we hope to see many of them at the service. A chance for ex village residents to renew old acquaintances.

This is work in progress. We are preparing family trees, details of the homes they left behind and their military records, their regimental music.

If you are a relative, or have information about any of those who died – please do contact us.

We are still seeking information about Cecil Burdett who may have a Colby connection and the name Bates in his family, Hebert Keeler who died aged 36, having also fought in the Boer War and William Turner whose father came from Roughton.

JUBILEE PLAYERS’ AUTUMN PRODUCTION Dial M for Murder by Frederick Knott Hitchcock suspense at the Tithe Barn, Horstead

Alfred Hitchcock needs no introduction - the master of suspense and widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He directed over 50 feature films in a career spanning six decades, but perhaps became as famous for his cameo roles in most of his films.

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS PRESENT

DIAL M MURDER

We don’t know yet if our director will find herself on stage in the Jubilee Players’ autumn production, but we can assure you that you’ll enjoy an evening of high drama as the group presents ‘Dial M for Murder’, one of Hitchcock’s most acclaimed productions. First performed as a play on the BBC in 1952, the story centres around ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice, who wants to have his wealthy wife, Sheila, murdered so that he can get his hands on her inheritance. He blackmails an old acquaintance into carrying out the murder, and alone at home, Sheila’s evening takes a dramatic turn when the phone rings and she suddenly finds herself fighting for her life. But the carefully-orchestrated set-up goes awry leaving Wendice frantically scheming to avoid having his plot detected. Full of twists, turns and suspense, this gripping drama is a masterpiece of writing that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

We hope that the re-telling of this classic play has all the right ingredients to chill your spine, as it transports you back to a simpler time when people had to actually leave their bed to answer the phone, sometimes with disastrous consequences!

Our Friend

It’s many years now that you left us So many things were untold You always looked so young and beautiful But we knew that you were old. We remember all your laughter You always had a smile You could always find time for us Which made our life worthwhile. We think of you most every day When we see shadows on the wall You were so tall and elegant We were oh so small. We used to run your errands For all things that were nice You always wanted to pay us But we never would name a price. We used to chop your firewood We used to light your fire For you we would do just anything It was you who we admire. R Craske

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Charley, the cat mentioned last time, has responded well to treatment for his skin problem. The improvement was helped by putting him on to a different diet, a special food we often use for cats with tummy problems. We have now said goodbye to Will, Jazz, Millicent, and Rosy plus another of the kittens, namely Kellog.

People contact Stephanie when they decide they would like to give a new home to one of the cats or kittens in care and, with cats, she will be able to identify whether or not a particular cat will be suitable for their lifestyle. With kittens, the situation is not so simple, and this is one of the reasons they are not available for adoption until after they have had a health check and first vaccination with the vets. Sadly, with very young kittens, there is a possibility that not all will survive, especially those that have joined us from outside situations. By the time they go for their health check we may also be seeing some of their individual personalities and this again helps to identify which kitten is most suitable. To us it is not about colour but the nature and temperament of the individual kitten. Experienced cat owners will ask the obvious questions regarding what the cat or kitten will need in its new home. People, new to giving a home to a cat or kitten, may have read up about what is needed but we are only too happy to offer suggestions and advice.

We always suggest that, to begin with, the cat or kitten should be fed on the same food as it has been used to. This will usually prevent tummy upsets. Any new diet should be introduced gradually. Similarly, with cat litter, it is best to start with the same type and, if they prefer another product, again, introduce it gradually. A strong cat carrier will be required and we would suggest getting one that will be big enough for the cat in question. We have, on occasions, needed to lend a larger carrier when one of the bigger cats has been re-homed, because the carrier was too small. It is also cost effective to buy a larger one for a kitten as it will not be small

Hedgehog Haven

As the weather turns autumnal, the small hogs coming in will probably not reach their release weight in time for a safe winter hibernation.

One such case is Buttercup (pictured). She was found out during the day on the pavement on Mundesley Road in North Walsham, cold & very wobbly on her feet. Fortunately her finder picked her up, knowing that a hedgehog out during the day is not ok.

At only 150 gms this little one will certainly be overwintering with me. In the last couple of weeks six hogs have left to be released but as soon as a hutch becomes empty another hog arrives to fill that space!

Remember little Boris? He is little no longer and will be being released in the near future.

You can find me on Facebook for all the latest news on the hogs.

for long. Litter trays will also be needed and, again, buying a larger size means less likelihood of any on the floor. Having a covered litter tray may also be a preferred option to give the cat more privacy and contain any smells. They will also need bowls for water, wet food and biscuits, plus brushes and combs for Charley, looking much better now grooming. Toys and possibly a his coat is growing back scratching post will help to keep the furniture safe and the cat amused. The toys do not need to be expensive and you will be amazed how much fun can be had with a feather or some small object on the end of a length of string. Cat beds do not always get used as the cats often find a different place to lay their weary paws. A cardboard box with some soft bedding will suffice.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Top Tips for Autumn

After a long and wonderful summer temperatures are finally starting to drop. When it comes to keeping your pets healthy and helping them enjoy autumn to the fullest, there are some things to keep in mind.

Watch out for ticks : thanks to warmer, wetter winters ticks are now a year round problem and with wildlife commonly moving into our gardens for food or places to hibernate ticks and tick borne diseases are important considerations. Either check your pets daily for ticks, or better still use tick prevention treatment to ensure they are not at risk.

Take care with anti-freeze : The first frost is just around the corner and anti-freeze can be our best friend on cold icy mornings, but remember it is incredibly toxic to pets. Ensure that it is kept out of reach of your cats and dogs and always kept in a sealed bottle. Make sure Rabbits and Guinea Pigs are housed correctly : now is the time to make provisions for small furry pets who have been housed outside through the winter. Either plan to move them in to garages or sheds when the temperature falls or make sure their hutch is protected from the elements if it remains outside. Beware of rodenticides : this is the time of year when rodents start to seek warmth and move closer to our houses and garages. Remember that rodenticides are also fatally toxic to cats and dogs so make sure that pets do not have any access if you choose to put rat bait down.

Plan for fireworks : the firework season seems to be getting longer each year and can be a stressful time for all pets in different ways. If you have a cat or dog with noise phobias now is the time to start trying to teach them to cope with the noises or consider supplements to help calm them and alleviate the stress.

Autumn is also wonderful season for dog walking, for enjoying midday sunbeams and for cats and dogs to investigate their changing surroundings and smells, so we hope you all make the most of it and that your animals do too! Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

North Walsham Historical Society The Tower of London by Speaker David Morton David began his talk by saying there will be lots of history because the site spans more than 2000 years.

His first slide was of the great cascade of 1.2 million poppies inspired by Lord Dannat Constable of the Tower, covering 18 acres of the moat.

The White Tower is largely unchanged since 1285 and is a complex list of buildings consisting of the Royal Apartment, Dungeons, Treasury, Public Records Office, Armoury and Menagerie, set within a dry moat.

It was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and is located in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It is today recognised as the home of the Crown Jewels and is a Royal Palace. Amongst its more notable detainees was Guy

Fawkes, Sir Walter Raleigh, Rudolf Hess, Ann Boleyn, Princes Edward and Richard, the ‘Princes in the Tower’ (some adolescent skeletons have recently been discovered under some stone steps, but have yet to be acknowledged as the remains of the Princes) and lastly The Kray Twins.

Since AD850 only seven persons have been executed in the Tower. The White Tower is periodically white washed to maintain its white appearance.

The Tower has been guarded since Tudor times by the Yeomen Warders, 37 men and woman all recruited from the Armed Forces who have reached the rank of Warrant Officer. They are better known as beefeaters. In their bright red dress uniforms, they were originally part of the monarch’s personal bodyguard.

During the time of Oliver Cromwell the Crown Jewels were sold and many were melted down. The anointing spoon is the earliest remaining relic from this period

The King knew that he needed help in running the treasury and enlisted the help of 600 Jews in doing so - they rather blotted their reputation by ‘clipping’ the coins.

The Ravens are an attractive feature for visitors. Six are kept in the tower, seven at the most, where they have a free rein. Their presence is traditionally believed to protect the Crown and the Tower. A superstition holds that "if the Ravens of the Tower are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it”. If a Raven dies or flies away it is replaced by one from the reserve stock.

Happisburgh RNLI Volunteers put their Casualty Care Training to Good Use

On 2 September Humber Coastguard requested the help of Happisburgh RNLI to evacuate an 89 year old lady who had fallen on the beach at Ostend, north of the station.

D-Class, D - 813 ‘Russell Pickering’ was the first to be launched to her aid with Tim Grimmer as helm and Martin Gibbs as crew, followed by the Atlantic 85, B - 899 ‘Howard Bell’ with Charlotte Siely at the helm and Jake Munday and Mark Defraine as crew.

The D-class arrived on scene and beached on the Ostend ramp before attending the patient, with the Atlantic dropping its crew ashore to help. The crew joined the paramedic on scene before Bacton Coastguard and Mundesley fire service arrived.

After the patient was assessed and packaged into a lifeboat’s basket stretcher she was moved off the beach into a house to await the arrival of an ambulance to take her to hospital. Both lifeboats were stood down and returned to station.

Once the lifeboats had returned to station the crew were called back into action! This time to Cart Gap ramp where a lady in her 50s had taken a fall over a dog and injured her knee on the ramp.

Their casualty care was put into practice again. The patient was assessed and unable to move her leg and was given oxygen before being put in the

station’s second basket stretcher and moved into the station for care to carry on while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance to transport her to hospital.

The crews are always pleased to put their skills into practice when they are called upon. After all this the volunteers still had both boats to sort, refuel and make ready for service.

A new production from fEAST Theatre

Into Thin Air ‘A compelling mystery and tender family memoir’ by Rob John

It’s 1982. The Falklands war is on the telly. Dexy’s Midnight Runners haunt the airwaves and 15-year-old Norfolk school girl Susan Kemp is going off the rails. And then she vanishes . . . into thin air.

Canada Boys, Parachute and, earlier this year, Salt, fEAST describes the play as a compelling mystery, a tender family memoir and a sad comedy of ambiguous loss.

This storyline is the basis of the new play by Rob John, Into Thin Air, which will be touring Norfolk and Suffolk in October.

Co-director Dawn Finnerty said “Like many theatre makers we would love to see more young people at our shows. Under 20s are a hard-to-reach audience and we are determined to challenge that.

Thirty six years later her brothers Pete and Melvin still live in the shadow of Susan’s disappearance.

Rob acknowledges that when Norfolk people hear about the subject of his play they inevitably mention the tragic case of April Fabb the Norfolk teenager who disappeared in 1969.

It stars London-based actress Charlotte Price who plays Susan, and is directed by Rob and features fEAST regulars Dawn Finnerty, Robin McLoughlin and Owen Evans of Nimmo Twins fame.

“We hope that some of those who take part in these sessions will want to find out what happens next and so come and see the show.”

Since the company was established in 2010 fEAST Theatre’s reputation has grown and the company has built up a loyal audience in the region with a series of well-received touring productions but they are hoping that this production will extend their audience base still further. For details of performances etc visit . feasttheatre.com/home

North Walsham Windows & Glazing Ltd

“I live in North Norfolk only a couple of miles from the place where April was last seen. I’ve often thought about the awful long-term impact of her disappearance on her family but although the idea for the play might have in some way been triggered by this well-known case my story and its characters are entirely fictional,” he says.

Into Thin Air is the latest production of fEAST Theatre. Having established themselves as one of the region’s most accomplished professional touring theatre companies with sell out tours of The

We feel that Rob’s story will appeal to younger people as well as our established audience and so we are planning to give students in schools and colleges an opportunity to meet some of the characters from the play through a series of Forum Theatre workshops.

WALSHAM WARRIORS ARE BACK!

The Walsham Warriors are back as the 2018/19 league season is almost upon us! This year we have four teams fielding two men’s, a mixed, and a brand new ladies’ team, nicknamed The Amazons!

Before we get into match schedules, I have to send out a special thank you to Labone Indian Restaurant for sponsoring all three teams’ shirts last season! On top of this, we also need to thank Labone once again as they have most generously agreed to sponsor all four teams this year! The generosity of local businesses is overwhelming and we could not survive as a Club without it!

The season kicks off as usual with our two men’s teams having to face each other in both home and away ties, so the first match was Wednesday 12 September, with the second on 26th. All clubs with

two teams in the same division have to play their fixtures early to avoid being able to influence results at the end of the season. The Warriors also welcome a few Stalham players into the fold this year and although we are technically rivals, we love all of them and cannot wait to play alongside both their men and women.

With the ever-rising Club costs and falling regular member numbers, it is really important that local Clubs get help everywhere they can, so if any local businesses would like to help support the Warriors Club, please, please email Ray on razerestringz@gmail.com or just search for Walsham Warriors on Facebook! We are looking for kit sponsors for four teams, sponsors for our

As an extra feature, Ray has just opened The Shuttle Shack, a specialist Badminton Shop at North Walsham Garden Centre Retail Park on the Norwich Road, selling everything badminton, from rackets to sportswear, racket bags and indoor court shoes. The shop also has in-house racket stringing, so do pop in, even if it’s just to say hi.

North Norfolk District Council is poised to spend ÂŁ600,000 on improving facilities

Visitors and residents in North Norfolk are set to enjoy a huge investment in public conveniences.

North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet has agreed to spend £600,000 on lavatories across the district. The investment bucks a nationwide trend that has seen many local authorities withdrawing from the provision of these facilities.

The plans involve the rebuilding of the lavatories at Lusher’s Passage, Sheringham, and Stearman’s Yard, Wells. Significant upgrades are planned for the facilities in Queens Road, Fakenham, and New Road, North Walsham. There will also be refurbishment of the loos in Coast Road, Bacton, and Coast Road, Walcott.

Meanwhile, new or significantly improved facilities at West Runton Beach Access and Cart Gap, Happisburgh, have been previously proposed as part of the Deep History Coast initiative, and funding for those has already been secured.

Despite the financial constraints faced by all local authorities, NNDC regards the provision of public conveniences as a key service, underpinning the district’s tourism offering as well as town centre economies.

North Norfolk has 39 public lavatories across the district, including on seafronts, in car parks, in town and village centres and at rural locations along the coast and on the Broads, and there are no charges for their use. It’s thought that no similar tourist destination in England has more.

The recommendation was due to go in front of NNDC’s Full Council this week. North Walsham Times 551 September 29th 2018

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis After long hot summer it’s time to get back on the tables

Rewind five months or so and the last season of the Star Paving North Norfolk Table Tennis League was heading to a climax with the coldest Championships on record with the mini return of the ‘Beast from the East’. None of the players shivering in the Sports Centre that day would have imagined quite what sort of summer was then to come, but now the nights are finally starting to draw in the new season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League has got underway. There are two less teams in the League this season but a very healthy number of 27 still remain (split into three equal divisions of nine) and the six North Walsham teams return with two teams in each division. There has been quite a major shuffle of personnel amongst the teams and

also a minor re-branding in terms of the names with the teams now known as North Walsham Alpha, Beta, Cobras (the North Walsham Charlie’s didn’t sound quite right!), Delta, Echoes and Foxtrot.

The first round of the Knockout Doubles Cup took centre stage as the new season began. North Walsham Foxtrot’s Simon Porritt and Phil Mole were joined by debutant Jim Crossley to host Mundesley C’s Dave Williams, Ben Thomson and Sheila Prime (playing up). Williams and Thomson won the opener against Crossley and Mole 7-11, 14-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4. The hosts took the next two battles in straight before Porritt and Mole beat Williams and Thomson in five. Two more wins in straight sealed a 5-1 win for Foxtrots. Debutant Dave Houlton joined Nathan Adams and John

A great start to the season for the Vikings! After three games they were one of just three sides in London One North with 100% records, Colchester and Rochford Hundred being the others.

The Vikings most challenging match was their third, at home to promoted Sudbury. 22 -20 down soon after half time they showed plenty of character to come back strongly to claim the win 38 -22 despite disruptive injuries to Jim Riley and James Knight. Their other victories were more straightforward: 59 - 0 versus Fullerians at Scottow in the season's opener and 50 - 12 in the local derby at Diss. They have been playing an exciting brand of rugby, averaging nine tries a game. Matt Hodgson, back from a year out injured, has already amassed 49 points.

The 2nd XV, the Raiders, are also unbeaten in their League with victories
