North Walsham & District Community Archive 2019 calendar

North Walsham & District Community Archive has always endeavoured to collect as much photographic history of the town as possible, to keep it safe for future generations and to make it available to the public.

Our beautiful calendar has quickly became a firm favourite with those who grew up in the town and remember ‘the good old days’, newcomers to the town interested in its history and to those lucky enough to grow up here but who now live further away - as copies are sent all over the world, via our website. The calendar is as collectible as it is practical. This year we've also added some useful, local dates in their appropriate squares to make the calendar even more useful as well as collectable.

TRUSTEES NEEDED FOR LOCAL CHARITY September 2018

Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to using your particular skills?

Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to “give something back” to your community?

Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop In Service.

If you have current or past financial, business, HR or administrative expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals over 18 years of age who are willing to commit regularly approximately 4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. Trustees usually serve initially for a period of 3 years. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas. We hold a trustees meeting monthly on a Thursday in Sheringham.

If you are interested, please contact ageconcernmanager@gmail.com or phone 01263 821188

There will be an informal interview process and a chance for you to ask any questions of your own.

We look forward to meeting you. Jennie Cummings-Knight Chair Age Concern North Norfolk

North Walsham & District Community Archive 2019 calendar

Continued from front cover... Producing a calendar is a great way to safeguard photos for future generations because it doesn’t matter how you store photos, all types of media will deteriorate, become damaged or be lost. We digitise all the photos we find to the best possible quality we can and then we make back-up copies, but the more copies of these photos that exist, spread over so many locations, means their chances of survival are that much greater. Therefore by owning one of these calendars you are potentially helping the community safeguard its valuable photographic heritage. A calendar also supports our mission statement to make the photos available for all. We have a very successful website and Facebook group but we are aware that not everybody has access to the internet so the calendar will allow absolutely anybody to own copies of these photos. The North Walsham & District Community Archive calendar is also a great way to raise funds for the Archive group which in turn enables the group to work even harder to make sure our town’s heritage is not lost forever.

This year's calendar is even bigger than before with the extra photos included being made possible by the generous support of so many local businesses advertising with us. For the calendar months we picked another 12 gorgeous historic photos of the North Walsham area (from our collection of thousands, taken by respected local photographers of yesteryear) and 4 more were then included on the extra pages and cover. We then scanned them professionally, directly from the original negatives where possible and from highest quality sources where negatives were not available. Choosing the photos to use - to create an interesting and attractive set was a vigorous process, making sure we included iconic scenes, lost scenes and people. Final choices were mainly based on the popularity of the photos that have been shared on our Facebook group over the last few years. Each photo is litho printed at full A4 size on coated paper (to give the best possible quality reproduction) with a well-designed, A4 calendar below for each month. We are really proud to say this is a 100% local product.

Photos of North Walsham by North Walsham photographers, part of the North Walsham Archive on a calendar designed in the town and printed by Barnwell Printers of Aylsham (who have been trading locally over 100 years and took over North Walsham printers Rounce & Wortley a few years back.)

The calendar is now available for £5 via, as last year, Express Printing & Stationery and Swallows Coffee Shop both in the Market Place and

is also available from the North Walsham Community shop at the top of the Market Place and Mi North Walsham on Vicarage Street. These shops have very kindly agreed to sell the calendars for the group on a non-commission basis which has also helped enable the reduction in retail price this year. The calendars are also available via the group’s website (www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk) as in previous years.

The North Walsham & District Community Archive would like to say a massive thank you to all the businesses who have so readily helped the project and proven that community spirit is alive and well in North Walsham, and how fondly the North Walsham Archive project has been adopted by the town’s residents.

The North Walsham & District Community Archive has been running many years now, managed by a hard working group of volunteers with backgrounds in history, local photographs and the local area but it does incur costs from time to time for equipment, insurance, stationery, organisation of exhibitions, etc. It is hoped this calendar will raise the money to keep the group functioning productively for some time to come.

Our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/NorthWalsham Archive/ has now been running for 5 years and is as active as ever with over 6,000 members! It’s free and easy to join, and you will be able to view thousands of photos from the history of the town and discuss those photos and memories with other members.

The Beginning of Autumn

I need a warm jacket to walk down the lane, summer is over, we are threatened with rain. Autumn is anxious to come rolling in, the leaves on the trees are getting quite thin. An owl on the church wall blinks wisely at me, then with a flourish flies into a tree. There are one or two poppies left in the field, the old apple tree has produced a good yield. The blackberries are ripening, I must sample a few. Tomorrow I’ll pick a punnet or two. Every month there is something new in the lane, it’s a tranquil world free from stress and strain. Cadets Visit Historic Spitfire

2110 Squadron Air Cadets were invited, along with the cadets of 222 (Broadlands) Squadron to visit the International Aviation Academy, Norwich. There they spent some time flying the helicopter simulator before moving across to the Saxon Air hanger on the Airport.

This was the main focus of the visit and the cadets were able to see an executive private jet as well as a helicopter. Also, on display at Saxon Air was a Jaguar cockpit from the Spirit of Coltishall Association. But the highlight was a MkIX Spitfire. This is the most original Spitfire in existence and has flown every year since its construction in 1943, 75 years of flying.

Spitfire MH434 first flew from Castle Bromwich in August 1943 and was delivered to 222 Squadron where it was flown by Flight Lieutenant Henry (Pat) Lardner-Burke. After the War MH434 served with the Royal Netherlands and Belgian Air Forces before eventually Spitfire MH434 returning to the UK in private ownership. It has starred in several films including A Bridge Too Far and The Battle of Britain.

The cadets were able to meet the current owner Carolyn Grace who told them of its history.

2110 cadets are now looking forward to more flying at RAF Cranwell, if the weather is kind.

New Defibrillator for North Walsham

After three separate occasions when it was necessary to call the paramedics and the question was asked ‘do you have a defibrillator there?’, the congregation of Cromer Road Congregational Church in North Walsham decided it was time to do something about it. With a donation from Tesco, and the generous support of the Church members and local residents around the Cromer Road area, it has been possible to purchase a defibrillator Church Secretary Anna Davies and which is now situated outside Deacon David Poore the Congregational Church and available for use by the public. Thanks also go to AED Donate who helped to co-ordinate the fund-raising and purchase.

Volunteers Needed! Time to Spare?

North Norfolk Community Transport is currently looking for people with a few hours to spare who can offer their services as volunteer drivers.

We are a local charitable organisation that provides a door to door service to hundreds of North Norfolk residents who do not have easy access to other forms of transport.

Typically our members will use the service to travel from the outlying villages into such destinations as North Walsham, Cromer, Sheringham, Holt, Wroxham and Stalham to shop and run errands. Many of our passengers also enjoy the social aspect of the journey as they can catch up with neighbours and also meet new people. We are particularly proud of our drivers who are friendly reliable and always happy to ‘go the extra mile’ and help with the shopping bags.

In addition to our regular Dial a Ride trips we also run excursions to local places of interest such as garden centres, Wroxham Barns, Norwich and Great Yarmouth.

Laser hair removal just got better!

Try the latest, fastest, painless and most effective hair removal laser at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. With up to 30% off this autumn there is no reason not to! According to the latest research in hair removal, women shave 11,540 times in their lifetime and men spend 3000 hours on their shaving routine. It is no surprise then that a large number of people are turning to a long lasting solution for unwanted hair.

At the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic, Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FPCert BCAAM treats patients not only from Norfolk, but also surrounding counties and abroad. True to his philosophy of offering best treatments and technologies he has invested in the best technology for laser hair removal.

We see patients in all age groups, both sexes and gender reassignment cases. We all realise the physical impact of unwanted hair, but when we dig a bit deeper it is quite heart wrenching to hear some stories. Often there is lack of awareness of laser hair removal and how effective it is.

Coltishall Clinic now has not one, but five different lasers for hair removal. One laser cannot work best for everyone. Hence we have decided to have a range of lasers to provide best results to our patients and clients. Says clinic manager Trish.

How do we choose your laser? - We consider your skin type, hair type and body area to treat and then decide which machine will work best for you. You do need to have a proper consultation for laser hair removal. We also see people who can have medical reasons for hair growth and further testing or issues may need to be considered.

What about the pain and speed! It is not painful; sensation is just like snap from a rubber band. A cool gel is used with IPL and cool spray with our laser, which is incredibly fast and allows us to treat a full back or lower or upper legs in less than 40 minutes. It is very safe and offers unmatched results. You can watch a video of this laser on our website.

Official Opening of the RAISE St Benet Hall Garden Project On 28 September Norman Lamb MP opened the church community garden at St Benet Hall, North Walsham.

Members of the group were given the challenge of making the space behind St Benet Hall into an accessible community garden. They have created raised beds, planted with flowers, shrubs and vegetables. The fence has been renovated with colourful murals, designed by members, depicting North Walsham and St Nicholas Church. There is also a bench and picnic table where people can sit and relax.

This has all been made possible through fundraising and the generosity and support of St Nicholas Church, local businesses, individuals and North Walsham Community Shop.

The garden was created by RAISE Norfolk, a community group dedicated to enhancing and improving the ‘life experiences’ of adults with learning difficulties and individuals who feel isolated in their communities with the aim to be a safe and welcoming place where people can drop in and be amongst friends.

Norman Lamb, North Norfolk MP, praised the work of RAISE Norfolk in the community and the hard work of the adults who had transformed the garden.

North Walsham Times 552 October 13th 2018

Sara Coleman, co-founder, of RAISE Norfolk said “I am extremely proud of all the hard work put in by all the members and volunteer staff. It was a great turnout. Thank you to Norman Lamb for his support and opening our garden. Also thanks to the Town Mayor Barry Heston, Deputy Mayor Mary Seward and District Councillor Eric Seward for coming along to support us.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several more cats and kittens have left for new homes recently, including Sandie, one of our older cats who had been returned to our care when her owner was no longer able to look after her and Bobo a nice young cat who came in with several kittens because her owner had too many cats. We also said goodbye to Mittens who had already had three homes before joining us. When she arrived, she was very vocal, but, with lots of fuss from her carers, we began to see what a lovely friendly cat she was and knew that she just needed a home where she would get lots of attention. Her new owner fell in love with her immediately and has since let us know that it feels as though she has always been a member of her household.

Cats and kittens do react in different way when they arrive in their new home. Mittens, for instance, was happy to explore everywhere, whereas Bobo, took to hiding under the furniture and initially only came out to eat and use her litter tray. As most will have spent some time in one of our cat pens, to suddenly be offered the freedom to roam in a house, can be quite intimidating to begin with so we do suggest that the cat’s territory is limited to one room to begin with and to gradually allow them access to the rest of the house. Not all cats will be like Mittens, confident enough to explore straight away.

Although some of the kittens in care will have been living in a home and used to all the noises associated with a busy household, others will have been in care in one of our pens. They will be used to the sound of a vacuum cleaner in action, but not noises associated with televisions, washing machines, etc. Again, introduce them to these strange sounds gradually as most will need time to adjust (some cats continue to make a hasty exit when they hear a vacuum cleaner at work). Even when giving a home to two kittens you will often find they react differently to these new noises. It can be a frightening world for them in their new home and letting them settle at their own pace will help them to settle quickly.

When cats and kittens are re-homed we also always emphasise to their new family the importance of keeping all windows shut (even in very warm weather), making sure cat flaps are locked and checking before opening doors to the outside world. When you do finally let them out it is also a good idea to do this just before a meal is due!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

At the time of writing (end of September) in the last week I have taken in four underweight hogs Freda, Nutmeg, Cimmamon and Mustard.

Although from different locations, they all weigh between 230 and 260 grams. As by mid November at the latest, they would need to weigh the recommended minimum weight of 650 grams to survive hibernation, it is looking likely that they will be spending the winter here. Please keep a look out for these small ones, who will be desperately seeking lots of food to gain weight.

I will be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Saturday 13 October between 10am and 3pm with leaflets, advice and hopefully a resident hedgehog. Come along and say hello.

Wills, Gifts, and Legal Jargon Fiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr

The main (although not sole) purpose of a will is usually to decide who will receive what belongs to you when you are gone. In other words, it is a gift of your ‘estate’ (everything you own), to take effect on your death. There may simply be one straightforward gift of everything to a relative, friend or charity, or you may wish to make a number of gifts to different individuals or organisations.

As lawyers, we tend to distinguish between different types of gift. The legal vocabulary used can seem over-complicated to clients, but the distinctions can be important in the administration of an estate.

It might be helpful to explain some of the most common words used in the contexts of gifts in Wills:

The word ‘legacy’ is often used in place of ‘gift’ in a legal context, because it relates particularly to a gift (of any sort) in a Will, as opposed to a lifetime gift, for example.

A ‘specific gift’ is a gift of a particular, and separately defined, item or asset. This could be a gold watch or piece of furniture, for instance, or it could be a gift of some shares in a company or even the contents of a particular bank account.

A ‘pecuniary legacy’ is a gift of an amount of money, such as ‘I give the sum of One Hundred Pounds to my friend Fred’.

‘Chattels’ refers to personal possessions. The reason we tend to use the rather archaic term ‘chattels’ is because it has been defined quite precisely in legislation, which can help to avoid confusion and conflict. A definition of chattels appears in the Administration of Estates Act 1925, and this is the list with which most solicitors are familiar. However, it is rather outdated, with its reference to ‘carriages’ and ‘stable furniture’, and it was amended in the Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 to mean, for legal purposes, ‘tangible movable property, other than such property which:

• consists of money or securities for money • or was used […] solely or mainly for business purposes • or was held […] solely as an investment.’

Historians and farmers may be interested to note the strong connection in the past between wealth and agricultural assets. The word ‘pecuniary’ came originally from ‘pecus’, the Latin word for cattle, and, by derivation, for wealth or money. ‘Chattel’ has the same Latin (and Anglo-Norman French) roots as our word ‘cattle’ itself.

Seasonal Spectacular Exhibition

Once again we will be holding a seasonal exhibition and sale of work in the very pretty (and warm!) St Margaret’s church, Thorpe Market from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 November, combining stunning new artwork with a variety of unique, handmade Christmas gifts, cards and prints, from three local artists. As always, a wide selection of used books will be for sale, as well as refreshments in the form of teas, coffees and delicious homemade cakes. The exhibition is accessible for wheelchairs and is dog friendly, and as always there will be teas and delicious homemade cakes and a selection of used books. Do come along and meet the artists who will be on hand throughout the exhibition. Opening hours 11am – 4pm each day.

on the lack of punctuation in Wills. It is usual to be extremely sparing, especially with commas and full stops. It may be an old fashioned approach, which isn’t followed by all, but it still has merit. Although a lack of punctuation makes the Will a more difficult document to read, it avoids any possibility of misunderstanding – the ‘Eats Shoots and Leaves’ issue*.

So if you find your draft Will or the letter accompanying it contains some unusual language or punctuation, please bear with us, but do make sure you know what it all means. If you are in any doubt, ask us for an explanation.

*’Eats shoots and leaves’ – a panda *‘Eats, shoots and leaves’ – a hungry assassin

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors celebrate two year anniversary in North Walsham

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors celebrated their two year anniversary in North Walsham with clients, contacts, colleagues and local businesses on Thursday 20th September. The Clapham & Collinge team offered guests wine and canapés at their Anniversary Celebration, which was incredibly well received based on the high number of attendees.

“It has been lovely celebrating the opening of our new office and two year anniversary in North Walsham. We have had a very positive welcome to the town, the firm is over 60 years old, but we are by no means new in the legal field. We strive to be the first choice law firm locally and provide a full range of legal services for businesses and individuals.

We’re proud to be involved in a range of local charities and community initiatives, supporting charities such as North Walsham Play, Inspired Youth, The Benjamin Foundation and North Walsham Dementia Support Group (Cameo Café)” Said Andrea Smith, Marketing Executive.

The firm’s new premises is fully accessible to all clients with a new ground floor meeting room and more working space for their staff. Time to say #whatSUP with single-use plastic Smart new cups help the environment – and can save money too.

Smart, reusable, environmentally-friendly cups are now on sale in North Norfolk – and they should prove a popular choice for people who want to do their bit to save the planet.

The cups have been produced as part of North Norfolk District Council’s #whatSUP campaign – a push to slash the use of single-use plastic (SUP) in North Norfolk and beyond.

The ‘Refill not Landfill’ branding is designed to spread the message that it’s easy to cut down on how much SUP we get through.

As well as helping the environment, using one of these cups can quickly pay for itself. Many coffee outlets, for example, give a discount to customers who provide their own reusable cups. Reducing SUP use is particularly important in North Norfolk. No district in England has more Blue Flag beaches, and helping to reduce the amount of SUP can only help the district’s beaches and the marine life in the sea.

The cups are available for £5 from the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer.

Anna is mainly known for the ‘Arabella Collections’, she is a self-taught artist who was born and educated in Malaysia before she and her husband moved to Norfolk 19 years ago.

The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public 8.30am-5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10am-5pm on Wednesdays; and 8.30am-4.30pm on Fridays.

Anna’s latest collections of landscape paintings are influenced by the big sky and constant changes along the Norfolk coast. She works mainly in acrylics and water colours and lately has taken up textile and fibre, which is incorporated in her mixed media art work.

She believes that “Art is the creation of what the artist sees” and she applies this mantra to her latest collection that will be featured in Cromer.

North Norfolk District Council seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery, and in turn provides staff and visitors the opportunity to see a variety of artists’ work. Six exhibitions are held annually.

Applications invited for Art Fair East 2018

Major international contemporary art fair returns to the East of England

Applications are now open for artists and galleries to take part in the East’s largest, most popular and liveliest contemporary art event.

Art Fair East is now established as a regular feature in the British art calendar. The 2017 event featured the work of almost 200 artists and attracted around 3,500 visitors from across the UK.

Now in its fourth year, the fair is credited with bringing signed editions by Banksy and other world famous artists to the region for the first time.

Founded and curated by Will Teather and Brian Korteling, Art Fair East is now one of

the country’s leading fairs outside London.

As successful artists themselves, the organisers are passionate about getting more people interested in original contemporary art and helping artists to make a living from their work.

Artists, galleries and dealers are now inviting to apply to exhibit their work in this year’s annual event at St. Andrews Hall, Norwich from 29 November to 2 December 2018. All artworks must be one-off or limited edition. The closing date for applications is 31 October – subject to available space.

Will Teather said ‘Because we select the exhibitors we can make sure there is a good variety of work that will appeal to different people and give an assurance of quality’. I’d urge people to apply early as almost half the stands are already booked by returning exhibitors and others who have heard about the Fair and are coming for the first time’.

Brian Korteling added ‘We aim to deliver the best the art-world has to offer also introduce Eastern artists to a wider audience – we get a lot of

applications from artists in the east, especially from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, but we also get exhibitors from across the UK and overseas, as far afield as France, China and Lebanon.’

Sammy Forway Director of London’s Underdog Gallery said ‘Art Fair East is a wonderful exhibition opportunity. It is a great way for us to create interest in our gallery and artists outside London. That it is run by artists for artists is a big bonus!’

Jo Mullins of Norfolk’s Heart of Glass gallery from Norwich based Gallery said ‘Art Fair East keeps getting better, with a wide selection of art to suit all tastes and budgets and a very friendly, welcoming atmosphere.’

Black can draw sharp, jagged words that cut and slash the air; Sorrow, nightfall, dungeons, dark depths of deep despair! Creamy, dreamy, lacy veils, foam bubbles of sea spray, Cupcakes and hazy days with ice cream and horseplay. Green leaves, lichen, mown grass, wet moss and trees. Limes, cool velvet shade, grassy hands and knees. Yellow, golden sunshine and busy, buzzy bees, Buttercups and dandelions, olive oil and cheese. Of all the colours, Red is best, its magic ranks above, For it can draw an empty heart and paint it full love!

IMAGINING

I woke today to brilliant sun And returned at night – all work was done, No lumpy porridge at breakfast time Arrived at work, the traffic fine. Colleagues smiled and said good day Then offered help in any way, A 'cuppa' came, the saucer dry, The day was really on a high.

At lunch time fresh cooked fish and chips Bowl of brown sauce in which to dip, Then back to work all replete The daily tasks I then complete. Drive back home in record time Dinner ready – steak pie – fine, Favourite programmes on TV tonight Another day turned out alright.

Oh heck! There goes that wretched alarm Must get up, it destroys the calm, All that bright day just imagination Here goes another day, all frustration.

Local MP ‘not confident’ with proposed changes to Norfolk fire and rescue services

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has written to the Police and Crime Commissioner to raise concerns about proposed changes that would see governance of the Norfolk Fire and Rescue service transferred from Norfolk County Council to Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

The Police and Crime Commissioner’s consultation over the fire service’s future ended this month.

In his letter Mr Lamb highlighted concerns outlined by Norfolk County Council, including:

• Removing the fire and rescue service from the County Council presents a significant financial risk to the service, and therefore a risk to public safety;

• The claimed £10m efficiency figure is speculative and misleading;

• The proposal makes a number of assumptions and untested claims;

• The proposed changes to operational response are not clearly articulated and have not been risk assessed, and therefore there is a significant risk to their deliverability and ultimately public safety;

• The claimed benefits could be achieved without a change in governance, and without the associated cost and disruption.

Mr Lamb went on to say “I am particularly concerned about the assessment by the County Council that if the proposals were implemented, we ‘could be facing an almost 20% reduction in fire engine capacity in rural areas and would impact on our ability to respond to emergencies and would mean that the services could not be resilient.’

“I also note the following statement : ‘A key element of the existing efficient operational response in Norfolk is on-call (retained) firefighters. This model of delivery does not appear to have been understood.’ As an MP for a rural area relying totally on retained firefighters, this assessment from the County Council inevitably causes me real concern.”

Hundreds enjoyed guilt free cake in aid of Macmillan

Purdy’s Tea Room, based at Woodgate Nursery in Aylsham, hosted a Macmillan Coffee Day on Friday 28 September, which included two charity raffles to win a hamper full of tea room and nursery goodies (worth over £50) and the ‘must have’ 2018 Christmas advent calendar from The Body Shop.

SPECIAL OFFER 15% OFF Every hot drink sold on 28 September went to the charity, with the cakes all fitting in with the Macmillan theme including a delicious selection of butterfly cupcakes. The coffee morning was sponsored by Calypso Coffee.

Stuart Morton, tea room owner, commented ‘This year has been really well supported and with all proceeds from the hot drinks being donated, we have raised over £1000 for Macmillan, a fantastic amount. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped us raise so much for a great cause’

Weather

by Ned Nimbus

The past three months came out as predicted although put under some pressure from an invigorated Atlantic in September as the tropics produced a few storms, some of which tracked past our western shores.

Up until then the hurricane season, as last year, was benign and way below predictions. Still a few weeks left however it does look as if there will be a good deal of fine weather up until midOctober, but with a variation in temperature as high pressure introduces winds coming in from the north now and again.

Thereafter we start to get an increase in unsettled conditions continuing into November when wet conditions will dominate.

December is likely to be a mixed month but throughout October to December no sustained cold weather is envisaged as low and high pressure systems will cross the country.

There just might be some cold lining up for after Christmas. Ned Nimbus September 2018 North Walsham Times 552 October 13th 2018

North Walsham Table Tennis Maximum for Howell but Alpha poach a win In the Premier Division in the first week of the League itself, NW Alpha’s Richard Westgate, Andy Beane and David Binns (playing up) hosted Poacher’s Aaron Howell and Andy and Laura Marsh. Howell took a maximum as he won the opener 12-10 in the fourth against Westgate and later beat Beane in five. Beane won the battle of the left-handers 13-11 in the fifth against Laura Marsh with the Poacher picking up a set in both of the next two singles. After two losses in straight sets, Andy Marsh beat Beane in the Alpha player’s third five-setter of the night. Beane teamed up with Westgate for a four set doubles win against Howell and Laura Marsh to seal a 6-4 win for Alpha. Binns was back in action the next night joining his Beta team-mates Mark Blackburn and Phil Stone for an away tie against Aylsham Enterprise’s Danny Atkins, Ben Briggs and Andrew Latham. Atkins won the opener in straight against Binns before a 5-1 lead in the decider following four very tight sets saw Stone beat Briggs 10-12, 12-10, 13-11, 9-11, 11-7. Briggs later saved match-points in the third sets against both Binns and Blackburn but lost

out to them in five and four respectively. Good tactical play saw Latham to a brace but he lost out to Binns in four. With the score at 4-4 Stone won a vital last singles against Atkins in straight before Atkins and Latham won the doubles against Stone and Blackburn also in three to force a draw. In the First Division, John Vaughan took a maximum but NW Echoes lost out 6-4 to LCC Dolphins while NW Cobras were beaten 10-0 by Aylsham Conqueror. In the Second Division, NW Foxtrots drew with Aylsham Norada. All of the first round ties in the Knockout Singles Cup were completed as Shark’s Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson hosted NW Alpha’s Andy Beane, Richard Westgate and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. Patterson won the opener in straight against Beane. Matt Hudson made it 2-0 to Sharks with a five set defeat of Westgate before Baldock-Yaxley beat Steve Hudson 12-10 in the third. Matt Hudson edged Beane out 12-10 in the fourth before three five-setters followed. The first two of these saw Alpha draw level at 3-3 with a 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 14-16, 11-7 win for

The Vikings suffered their season’s first defeat on 29 September losing 21 -12 to Colchester at Scottow. Both sides had taken maximum points from their first four games so an exciting hard fought match was anticipated and the large crowd was not disappointed, the Vikings fighting back from 21 - 0 down midway through the second half. This result meant they dropped to fourth on 20 points, with Rochford Hundred top (25) and Colchester second (24). Their list of injured backs lengthened with Tarre Ferris stretchered off after just 15 minutes joining Jordan Mustard (out for the season), Jim Riley, and Mike Braans on the sidelines, though James Knight and Dan Smith are now fit again. Johnny Marsters’ back line options have also increased with the arrival of
