North Norfolk High School student raises thousands for meningitis charity after surviving the disease A young survivor of meningitis has raised £2,640 for charity Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF).

Jasmine Pearce, age 15 who is a student at North Walsham High School explains “I was diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis when I was two years old and this greatly affected me and my family. It is a horrible disease that changes lives and destroys families. I was lucky enough to make a full recovery, however many do not. I hope that in the future, no one has to suffer from any form of meningitis. That’s why I wanted to raise funds for MRF whose vision is a world free from meningitis and septicaemia.

“I put on a series of performances at school called ‘A Night at the Musicals’ to raise funds for MRF and to raise awareness of this cruel disease. I am thrilled to say that we raised £2,640 for this incredible cause. I would like to thank everyone who came and supported us and helped us raise an amazing amount. Also, to the children who volunteered to perform and help out backstage.” Continued on page 4...

North Walsham Conservation Group

North Walsham Conservation Group meet every Wednesday afternoon to help look after and learn more about the wildlife and railway heritage of the surrounding area.

After a busy moth where we restored the old Honing railway station which is now open to the public, and met local MP Norman Lamb at Pigneys Wood, sessions in November will include the chance to see inside the normally closed Felmingham old railway station building, learning the ancient craft of coppicing at Pigneys Wood, uncovering more original railway structures near Honing and expanding the butterfly reserve near Knapton.

This friendly mixed group of around a dozen people meet either by the roadside at North Walsham Train Station at 12.45pm for a lift, or on site at 1pm. For more details contact Mark on 07843 069567 or via m.webster@tcv.org.uk - or just turn up on the day and join in.

Autumnal Village Feast at Thorpe Market

On Saturday 6 October sixteen folk gathered together for an Autumnal Feast in our Village Hall.

We had a lovely home cooked Beef Cobbler, potatoes and two veg followed by BlackBerry and Almond tart or meringues with forest fruit.

We were asked nicely to sing for our supper while Liz and Dick

whizzed to and fro with all the goodies - very handy being next door to the Hall!

After the super meal we held a raffle followed by Autumnal games - well done Tony, he's our champ.

Caton’s have moved

We have moved into unit 5, St Nicholas Court, North Walsham (next to the launderette) due to the fire that occurred in the flat above our shop in Market St.

It might be up to a year before we can move back again, but in the meantime we have an even wider choice of games, consoles, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, stereo equipment, DVDs and DVD players, TVs and much more.

We buy and sell, have weekly payment schemes, do buyback loans and offer free help and advice. We have a scooter battery replacement service in place. We collect your scooter, replace batteries and return to you, all included in the price.

Everybody enjoyed the evening so much they are asking when is the next one Liz”.

Also, we have a large range of quality bedroom furniture, cabinets, tables, sofas, chairs and similar.

We will see. Watch this space … Liz Relf

Community Shop Grants

North Walsham Community Shop was delighted to announce October grants of £2,885 to groups in the town, the highest monthly total to date. These were awarded to:

• Parkinsons UK, £495 for room hire and exercise instructor fees

• New Stages, £440, to purchase folding chairs for use by New Stages and also by other groups and events in town

• North Walsham Heritage Group, £750 for professional management software to record their growing stock of artefacts.

• North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme, £200 for purchase and distribution of fridge magnets as a semi-permanent reminder of where help can be found

• North Walsham Funday, £1,000 towards costs of setting up next year’s Funday

This takes the total sum issued in grants to £11,711 since the shop opened in January. The concept of a shop raising funds for its community has proved a great success.

Shop Trustee Bob Wright described this as “a virtuous circle of giving with the community giving items for sale, our volunteer team giving their time in the shop and the shop giving to the town’s groups” Bob Wright

Charity LPA Scheme Launch LHB Approved

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are delighted to announce their second ‘Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme’ taking place throughout November.

As planning for later life professionals, we are keen to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind. Throughout November Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which gives someone the authority to act on your behalf when it comes to

important decisions, if you become unable to make them yourself. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:-

• Property and Financial Affairs This document gives your attorney the authority to deal with your property, bank accounts, investments, utility companies and any other finances. This document can be used as soon as it has been registered and regardless of whether you have lost capacity. Your attorney can make decisions on your behalf, provided the decision is in your best interests, for example deciding to sell your property to pay for care fees or change where an investment is held to ensure a higher return.

• Health and Welfare This document gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your day-to-day medical and care needs, your care/ residential home and life sustaining treatment. This document can only be used once you have lost capacity so if you have not made an LPA by this point, these decisions will be left to the medical professional involved in your care. This is often a point of contention as your family/friends may have differing opinions to the professionals when it comes to these decisions.

In addition to a 25% discount on Lasting Powers Of Attorneys, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support four Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are: • • • •

IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN THE WINTER?

The Benjamin Foundation The Feed North Norfolk Community Transport North Walsham Dementia Support Group (Cameo Café)

Lin Whitehead, Head of the Private Client team said “I am delighted that we are giving our clients the opportunity to support local charities with our LPA scheme again this year. The money raised during our 2017 campaign supported 4 Norfolk charities, many of whom rely on donations and corporate support, helping them to continue delivering their services to our county.

A study by the SFE found that 36% of people admit to having made no provisions for later life. With campaigns such as our Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme we hope that it will encourage people to have these important conversations with loved ones and get their legal documents in place.”

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

To claim your discount and book your November appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01603 693500. Appointments available at our Norwich, North Walsham and Sheringham offices.

www.Alignroofinguk.com Free survey & estimation 6

If you instruct us through this scheme and you would also like to make a Will, we will offer Wills at our usual fee but will make an additional £40 donation to the chosen charities.

All appointments regarding your Lasting Powers of Attorney must take place by Friday 21st December 2018.

New illuminations set to celebrate Norfolk landscape

Repton Revealed credit National Trust Justin Minns

in an entirely new light.

A stunning display of light is set to illuminate Humphry Repton’s vision for Sheringham Park, as the National Trust celebrates the last great landscape designer of the 18th century, in what is regarded as the best surviving example of his work in the country.

For seven nights this November, spectacular light installations will highlight Repton’s views in the landscape, enabling visitors to experience Sheringham Park

Malcolm Fisher, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Sheringham Park said; “It’s fitting in the bicentenary year of Repton’s death, his work is celebrated for all to enjoy. Repton Revealed is a new addition to our 2018 programme and one that we hope will be a highlight for many. It will not only showcase the beauty of the natural landscape, but the work of art that it has become.”

The National Trust has been working with an international team of artists including Richard Milner and Tundra, to create this site specific lighting installation in Repton’s home county.

imagined. However, at Sheringham Park, the parkland is still essentially his work. The National Trust continue to manage the landscape to the vision he set out, a natural landscape of trees, lush flowers, and carefully planned vistas that take in some of the most beautiful landscape in Norfolk.

Repton Revealed, Sheringham Park. Friday 2 - Sunday 4, Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 November, timed tickets available from 5.30pm. Adult £13.50, Child £8. Booking essential on 0344 2491895.

As visitors walk the mile long route, Repton’s story will be brought to light. And just as Repton designed his landscapes, the installations will build to a big reveal, befitting to what Repton himself described as his ‘most favourite work’.

Repton delivered his vision for Sheringham Park in 1812, in one of his famous red leather books, of which only 200 survive. In that book he wrote ‘Sheringham possesses more natural beauty and local advantages than any other place I have ever seen’.

Repton’s designs were left for others to oversee, adapt or ignore, and so it’s not surprising that they sometimes turned out rather differently to the way he

Firework Fears!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary. Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off. Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off.

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats! There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season. Pheromone-based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm within the environment and should ideally be

started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.

It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed.

As November creeps up its time to start thinking about Firework season and what we can do to help our pets. We offer FREE OF CHARGE firework advice for our clients as well as stocking a variety of calming products. Pop in or call us on 01692 407126 for advice from our friendly team.

Lost in Norfolk

If you are new to Norfolk, and trying to find your way, Don’t stop to ask directions, that will just cause you dismay. For Happisburg is Haze-bur-uh, and Cley is really Clay, While Wymondham is Wind-um, or so the locals say; And Stiffkey isn’t really stiff, you ought to say Stoo-kay! And Postwick’s really Pozzick, at least down Postwick way. There’s still time to enjoy our family Hallowe’en Trail. It runs from Wednesday 17 to Wednesday 31 October. There are themed prizes for all our younger visitors and spooky Broads stories to discover.

Halloween at the Museum

The special exhibition, Broadland During the First World War, looks at the impact of war on our towns and villages. There is an accompanying film and visitors will be offered the chance to make their own poppies too. The exhibition is on until 11 Nov, the centenary of the first armistice, and our final day of opening. We will be holding a 2 minute silence at 1100 on that Sunday to remember all local people who died in conflict.

Poppies at the Museum

And to commemorate our staying open later this year, we are offering cut price entry at £2.50 for adults and £1 per child from 01 to 11 November. It’s all going on so why not #makeitstalham this autumn. Full details are on our website. Open Sun to Fri, 1000 to 1630 and local schools and groups are welcome.

Twinned Towns Remember the Fallen

Twinned towns unite to remember war victims Scores of people who gave their lives fighting for their country – England and Germany – were remembered at a poignant civic dinner held at North Walsham. Ninety nine names from the town’s war memorial and 49 from twin town Friesenried were read out to guests at the event marking the centenaries of the end of the First World War and the foundation of the Royal Air Force. In a powerful speech which earned a standing ovation Friesenried Burgermeister Bernard Huber said war was not about “guilt or innocence, winners or losers, right or wrong, or good or bad,” but about “millions of victims.” The soldiers from both sides were “just normal people” involved in “useless fights” and regarded as worthless by the politicians. The deaths were “not heroism, just manslaughter” and the victims would “rather be alive than heroes.” And he warned against the modern day rising tide of nationalism which “more and more people seem to think is the cure for all problems, adding: “We can all see where extreme nationalism leads to” in a world where hate seemed more powerful than love.

North Walsham Mayor Barry Hester welcomed other German guests including twinning committee chairman Josefine Mader-Schedel, and war veterans chairman Wolfgang Eckl to the event at the town’s community centre on Friday night. The 91 guests ate a meal selected from 1918 recipes. Mr Hester said praised the community spirit which existed in North Walsham thanks to people organising events ranging from fireworks, cinema on the park, manning a new visitor centre and Matt

Smith and North Walsham Play raising £150,000 for two new play parks. His civic charity for the year is the War Memorial Hospital Friends, and a recent pool marathon raised £690 taking the running total for the Friends’ funds to £1500 in four and a half months. There were also speeches from Royal British Legion branch chairman Colin Chambers, and county Legion president Sir William Cubitt, along with history re-enactor Neil Storey who recounted tales of local men who fought in the Great War, and urged people to “remember them but move on.” photos courtesy Greg Garfoot Top left - 1 North Walsham mayor Barry Hester and VIP guests before the Armistice Civic Dinner. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Kittens Jachimo, Cornelius and Latte, have all left us and their places quickly taken over by new residents. These include Flossy, a lovely 12 year old tabby girl, who has come back into care because her owner has died. We also had two unexpected arrivals as Brutus and Cicero, two lovely two years old black and white boys, were dumped on Irene’s doorstep in the middle of the night. Fortunately, we had not contacted the next person with cats waiting to come into care so we did have a space available for them. These two boys were obviously very frightened when they arrived but are now learning to trust us.

We have also had several kittens arrive in care from outside situations and have two more being cared for by one of our supporters until we have a space to take them. These two kittens were living close to a supermarket and were being fed by the staff there. They were concerned for their welfare as the area has a lot of heavy traffic passing close by. As the kittens were at an age when they needed to be socialised it was important to get them safe as soon as possible.

Two of the other kittens came into care after we were contacted by one of the vets we use for neutering. They had a cat taken to them that had been in an accident and sadly died on the way to their surgery. When they examined her, they realised she was feeding kittens and obviously had no idea how old they were. Several of their customers live in the area and were contacted. Unfortunately, they were unable to find her owner so contacted us. Because the cat had been found near a local business complex where we have cat loving contacts, we asked them to try to locate the kittens. Amanda, one of our contacts, was on a mission to find them and called Stephanie the next day to let her know they had been found. She was able to bring them over to Dilham where they are now taking up the emergency kitten space in the shed. Although they are still a little bit frightened, they are young enough to learn to trust us and

enjoy having a fuss.

This is the second instance this year that we are aware of, where a mother cat has lost her life while feeding kittens. In the other instance the owners had to hand rear the kittens as they Flossy, lovely older cat, just looking for a nice were only a few comfy lap to sit on days old. We would always recommend that, while a cat is feeding kittens, she should be kept indoors, not only for her safety but also to prevent her becoming pregnant again while feeding her kittens.

Hedgehog Haven

This little hoglet came into care on 12 September. With his eyes open and teeth through, he was approximately four weeks old.

The poor little boy was found nudging his deceased mother who unfortunately had been killed by another animal. With the time for hibernation approaching, at only 90 gms even with his mother, it would be unlikely that he would have survived, He is doing well and will be with me over winter.

Bonfire night is fast approaching - a nice big pile of wood makes an excellent home for a family of hedgehogs, so please, before lighting your bonfire, check underneath for any animals nesting there. Thank you.

North Walsham Community Shop awards grant of £1,000 to support of North Walsham Foodbank distribution centre Bob Wright and Paul Oakes, Trustees of North Walsham Community Shop, recently met Adrian Rudman, Trustee of Cromer & District Foodbank and Team Leader of the North Walsham distribution centre to handover a cheque for £1,000 towards the running costs of the centre.

Adrian was joined by Kathy Findlay, the other Team Leader. Adrian said ‘Our North Walsham distribution centre helped 475 residents including 179 children, with emergency food parcels in 2017/18, so this will help us continue to provide the service we offer to North Walsham families and individuals and support them during times of crisis. We are extremely grateful. At Cromer & District Foodbank, we don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK,’ he added.

The foodbank has seen an increase in need year on year. Working closely with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, clients are signposted to whatever agency is best qualified to address the cause of crisis and to maximise client income. Foodbank has become the centre of a community-wide network of agencies that offers comprehensive support to those in need and disadvantaged.

With more than 150 local volunteers of all ages including former clients that contribute more than 9500 hours per year, equivalent to more than 5 full-time members of staff, are overseen by our only paid member of staff, our project manager. In the autumn, we will see the role out of

November is Pet Diabetes Month!

Pet Diabetes Month is a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and test the UK's cats and dogs for diabetes. Diabetes is increasingly common in dogs and cats over 6 years of age, and is thought to affect in the region of 1 in every 250 pets. It can affect cats and dogs of all ages, both sexes (intact and neutered) and all breeds. Diabetes mellitus, the clinical name for ‘sugar diabetes’. is a condition that affects the concentration of glucose, or sugar, in your pet’s blood. Diabetes results when the animal’s body makes too little insulin or when the body has difficulty responding to the insulin properly.

When your cat or dog eats, food is broken down into very small components its body can use. One component, carbohydrate, is converted into several types of simple sugars, including glucose. Glucose is absorbed from the intestines into the blood, where it travels to cells throughout the body. Inside cells, insulin helps turn glucose into fuel. If there’s too little insulin available, glucose can’t enter cells and can build up to a high concentration in the bloodstream. As a result, a diabetic patient may want to eat constantly, but will appear malnourished because its cells can’t absorb glucose. This high blood glucose will also make your pet very thirsty and results in an increase in their urination, often leading to accidents in the house. Key risk factors include genetic tendencies, other insulin-resistant disorders or conditions, (such as chronic pancreatitis or hyperthyroidism), and obesity and physical inactivity. Although diabetes can't be cured, the disease can be successfully managed with twice daily insulin injections and changes in diet. Successful diabetes management means your pet can lead a happy, healthy and active life.

North Walsham Community Shop opened in January 2018. The Trustee’s vision was for a shop which would be run by volunteers working with the community to recycle donated items and raise funds for local community projects. It has enabled a circle of giving; people give their unwanted items; the shop’s volunteers give their time to sell them and local groups are given grants for their community focussed projects and services. The first nine months have been hugely successful, with around £11,711 of grants being awarded to North Walsham’s charities and voluntary groups. www.northwalshamcommunityshop.org.uk

Diagnosis of diabetes is relatively straight forward and pets can be screened for possible diabetes with a simple urine test. Through the month of November we will be offering free urine tests for our patients, so if you have any concerns then pop in and see us at the surgery. Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

The Next Generation

The North Walsham Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) have adopted their local Air Cadet Squadron, 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron.

The Air Cadets have always tried to maintain strong links with RAFA and this adoption puts the mutual support of the two organizations on a more formal footing. It is also good to link the older generation of the Royal Air Force with its potential next generation. Although joining the armed forces is no longer expected of cadets, many cadets do go on to join the forces, especially the RAF, and, if not the skills learnt as a cadet are invaluable in the civilian job market.

Earlier this month the certificate of adoption was formally presented to the cadets by the RAFA President, Frank Gill. It was received on behalf of the cadets by 2110 Squadron Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens. Before the presentation the cadets If flying, and much more interests you, North Walsham Air Cadets paraded and marched past, paying their Flt Lt Alan Stevens receives the adoption parade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary respects to the RAFA Standard held by School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till certificate from Frank Gill their Standard Bearer Bob Ovenden. 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 18 years. Far too many children still being excluded from school in Norfolk, says local MP

Local MP spearheads petition demanding end to second home tax loophole

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb’s accusation comes as new figures reveal that 263 students were permanently excluded in the last academic year in Norfolk.

Norman Lamb MP is asking Norfolk residents to sign a petition calling for an end to a tax loophole that allows second home owners to pay no council tax

The Norfolk County Council data, obtained by Mr Lamb in a freedom of information request, also shows that 57 students were still waiting to be found full time education by the end of the year.

This comes after new figures revealed that the tax loophole is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering £1.8 million this year alone. Mr Lamb is calling on the Chancellor to end the tax loophole in the Autumn Budget, expected to be announced at the end of October.

These revelations comes as the Government’s latest available data places Norfolk amongst the local authorities with the highest rates of permanent exclusion in England.

In England, any property that is “available to let” for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than £12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property.

For the 2016/17 academic year, Norfolk ranked 13th out of 184, excluding 0.18% of its total number of pupils. Only Bedford has a higher permanent exclusion rate in the East of England.

North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-home holiday lets are claiming 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19 – at a cost of £1,873,998. The figures were disclosed following a freedom of information request from Mr Lamb.

Mr Lamb has been campaigning to reduce the number of permanent exclusions in Norfolk and improve education provision for excluded students. He said “These figures are really shocking. Not only is Norfolk one of the local authorities most likely to permanently exclude its students, but it is also failing in its legal duty to provide those children with essential education without delay.

While many of these properties will be genuine holiday homes, the ease of registering a property as a holiday home and claiming full business rate relief leaves the system open to abuse by second-home owners who are seeking to avoid paying council tax.

“We know that children with Special Educational Needs and those with mental ill health are much more likely to be excluded. Many excluded children have themselves experienced trauma in their lives - sometimes physical or sexual abuse or neglect. Yet we treat them as culpable.

Mr Lamb said “I think this in an outrageous tax loophole. It is far too easy for second-home owners to bend the rules under the current system. This is particularly galling in a low-wage economy like North Norfolk, where it is critically important that everyone is making a fair contribution. We cannot afford a system that is open to abuse in this way, which is why these rules need reform as a matter of urgency. If you agree, sign the petition demanding that the Chancellor ends this tax loophole in the Budget this autumn.”

“We also know that the educational outcomes for excluded children are very poor, and that too many end up in the criminal justice system. The cost of this failure over a lifetime is enormous.

“Action is urgently needed to address this crisis within schools, at the county level and nationally. Our children’s futures depend on it.”

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB

With the new season in the Norwich & District Badminton League well underway, the Walsham Warriors have started brightly and already the progress from last year is apparent.

Both inter-club matches between our Men’s 1st and 2nd Teams went to our 1st Team, winning 6-3 twice. However, the score does not really represent the matches as the 2nd Team have improved so much that they ran every game close.

Our Mixed Team played their first match, travelling to Attleborough to face Besthorpe, who actually beat us 9-0 twice both Home and Away last year. So it was very rewarding to take almost every game to a decider and come away with a 7-2 loss, it is a huge step up from last year, especially with new partnerships. Also fantastic to get a message afterwards from the opposing Captain congratulating us on our improvement and saying just how hard a game it was! Last, but definitely not least, our new Ladies Team kicked off their season, also travelling to face Besthorpe, with completely new pairs and a different match format to cope with, our Amazon Warriors did brilliantly to actually win 4 games in their first ever match! I cannot fully describe just how proud I am of the whole Club, the spirit, attitudes and friendliness of everyone involved is humbling and to physically see the improvement in players is a wonderful thing. Anyone who would like to play at Club level, even if you don’t think you’re ready for League, do come along and play on our Club Nights, or email me razerestringz@gmail.com – we play every Wednesday 8pm until 10pm.

Centre with its Licensed Bar. Called Quixcrits because there will be free crisps and biscuits for every Team, featuring a prize raffle too! It will be fun and will help us raise funds for the Club, hope to see you there and please tell everyone!

North Walsham Table Tennis Cobras close to cup upset

The second round of the Knockout Singles Cup saw a derby between NW Cobra’s Tom Wardle, Andrew Weston and Ben Lester and NW Beta’s Mark Blackburn, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone in a match unusually played on a Friday night at North Walsham Sports Centre. Blackburn opened with a win in straight against Wardle before Stone recovered from a set down to beat Weston in four. Lester defeated Hook 11-9, 12-10, 11-9 before Weston beat Blackburn in five from two sets to one down to level the tie. Wardle then took Cobra’s third point in a row with an 11-8, 6-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-9 win against Hook and from 0-2 down, the First Division side found themselves leading the Premier Division team 3-2. Stone saved set-points in the first set as he beat Lester 13-11, 11-6, 11-9 to again bring the tie level at 3-3. Hook moved Beta one win away with a four set defeat of Weston and they looked good for the win as Blackburn took the first two sets against Lester; however the Cobra made a good recovery to win 13-11

in the fifth and send the tie down to the wire. The decisive ninth match saw Stone complete his maximum in straight against Wardle as Beta squeezed through to the quarter-finals with a 5-4 win. With Echoes beaten 9-0 by Backhanders Beta are the only remaining NW team left in the Cup and will visit Sharks in the quarter-final.

In the Second Division, Seaflames Swordfish’s Nigel Brady, Shelley Betts and Rex Parfitt hosted NW Delta’s Gudi Scham, Sarah Tudhope and debutant Tony Bispham. It was a good first outing for Bispham who edged Betts 8-11, 13-11, 12-10, 12-10 and won a five-setter against Parfitt where both players won a total of 47 points. Scham took a maximum for Delta including wins in four against both Brady and Betts and was supported by a brace from Tudhope which included a win in five against Parfitt. For the hosts, Brady beat both Bispham and Tudhope in three and partnered Parfitt for a doubles win in four against Scham and Tudhope. This one had some excellent rallies and a pivotal third set as Swordfish prevailed 12-10, 8-11, 16-14, 12-10. Following that 7-3

Just one game for the Vikings since the last article, a resounding 41-0 home win versus Old Priorians. In atrocious conditions they ran in seven tries, including one for debutant Joe Milligan, with the versatile Jake Duffield (pictured) named as Red Lion Coltishall Man of the Match for a great all round display at full back. The Vikings headed to Luton last weekend in fourth place on 25 points. Rochford Hundred (30) were top, Colchester second, one point behind them and Eton Manor (28) third. The Raiders stayed second in Eastern Counties One North after their first defeat, 25 -7 to leaders Beccles.

The season is well underway on Sunday mornings for the Youth and Minis. The Colts (under 17/18) have made an
