Lest We Forget

This year’s Remembrance Day marks 100 years since the end of World War 1 in which 886,000 members of the British Military perished. 15,500 of those were from Norfolk. Handmade poppies, one for each individual killed, went on display at St Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich. Organiser Sarah Salmon, project co-ordinator for Norfolk County Council’s Libraries and Information Service, had the idea for the display a year ago and the poppies have come in from all over the county and abroad, each one unique but together make North Walsham a stunning and Houses & Flats to rent thought provoking Housing benefit accepted display. As Sarah herself remarked, and arranged “a fitting tribute”. www.regentscourt.co.uk

We Will Remember Them

Members of the Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Group visited St Peter Mancroft Church, Norwich to see the moving display of 15,500 handmade poppies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. They were met and shown round by Sarah Salmon who came up with the idea for the display a year ago. She collected all of the poppies and stuck each one onto bunting tape in order to create this moving display.

Poppies poured in from across Norfolk, including about 300 from the Macmillan Group, as well as contributions from abroad, from Brownie and Scout groups, all in a variety of materials. Many contributions came with individual family stories.

Each poppy represents a life lost in the conflict, “somebody said the best thing was, even though they were following a pattern, each of the poppies is unique, just like the soldiers, and I think that’s a really fitting tribute” said Ms Salmon. The display has now been dismantled and will be distributed to form smaller displays around the county.

World War 1 Centenary Remembrance Service at St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market on Sunday 11 November at 10.30am Thorpe Market Church has researched the families and military service of the 14 men remembered on the memorials in St. Margaret’s Church.

Robert Turner have not been located.

Descendants of 12 of the 14 men have been contacted. Families of Herbert Cornelius Keeler, who also served in the Boer War and William

All of them were recorded in the rent books for 1914 in the Gunton Archive at Norfolk Records Office. It is therefore likely that they were

mostly employees of Lord Suffield.

The research uncovered some quite poignant facts. Frederick, Peter and Walter Cook were three brothers who died in the space of 2 years. Robert Allan died in France in 1917 at the age of 42.

Reginald Allen, his son, died at the end of the war aged 19. He is buried in a war grave in the churchyard. Thomas Pank Mayes died on 11 November 1918 aged 49, the day of the Armistice, and is also buried in the churchyard.

The gates at St Margaret’s have been painted specially for the occasion, recognising the fact that in the early 20th century most people attended church regularly and in the case of these men may also have been choristers, hence passing through them frequently. Sadly, two were later carried through them to be laid to rest in the churchyard.

The exhibition in the church features a silhouette for each man, bearing the brass cap badge of their regiment. There were eleven from ‘The Norfolk Regiment’, one from ‘The Warwickshire Regiment’, one from ‘The Queen’s West Surrey Regiment’ and one from ‘The Coldstream Guards’. There are details of their families and what is known of their war service. There are also photographs of some of the houses we know they left from to go to war.

The service on Remembrance Day will include traditional hymns, readings, lighting of candles and the different regimental music that they would have marched to.

There will also be an excerpt from the Address given at the service that took place nearly 100 years ago to dedicate the village war memorial. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

North Norfolk District Council install WW1 Tommy figures

The figures will raise money for armed forces charities

A third Tommy has been erected in Holt Country Park and a fourth, smaller 30 centimetre Tommy has been installed in NNDC’s main reception.

Three six foot tall Tommy silhouettes have been installed on land belonging to North Norfolk District Council as part of the centenary commemorations of the end of World War One.

North Norfolk District Council’s Cromer office has become home to two of the silhouettes, which have been created as part of the ‘There But Not There’ 2018 Armistice project for the charity Remembered.

The project is described as being 'the defining centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-18 war' and aims to commemorate, educate and heal.

By purchasing the three Tommies, NNDC has helped fund such veterans’ charities as The Royal Foundation’s Armed Forces Programmes, Help for Heroes, The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation and many more.

The life-sized Tommy figures will stand alongside the existing 'Poppies in Steel' metallic sculpture installed in 2015 to commemorate centenary of World War One.

A service of remembrance for staff and elected members was held to officially dedicate the Tommies on 9 November.

North Norfolk District Council is also marking the Armistice centenary by giving packets of Flanders poppy seeds to local organisations including Town and Parish Councils, schools and care homes in North Norfolk. The organisations are being invited to sow the poppy seeds as a symbol of remembrance and respect for all those whose lives have been impacted by war. Once sown the number of poppies should increase year on year and will provide an annual glorious display of colour and a visible lasting legacy across North Norfolk. Cllr Nicholas Coppack, Chairman of NNDC, said: “Although this year marks the hundredth anniversary of

the armistices we must never forget the sacrifices, not just from our service personnel but the millions of civilians who died during the last dreadful two World Wars.

“We will continue to remember them. These poignant statues are a permanent reminder of the loss.”

Remember

In Flanders fields of poppies Lay soldiers brave and true Who fought so we had our freedom The likes of me and you. That’s why we war our poppy To keep our memories clear Of those brave men who fought for us Still lay in graves out there. It’s November when we think of them most The time the conflict was won When those that could came back again A hero every one. So be sure to buy your poppy And remember whose we lost And wear it with great pride Not for what it cost. R Craske

Hospital Ladies ‘dare to bare' for Cancer!

Brave nursing and admin staff from Cromer & District Hospital have decided to 'strip off and stand up to cancer' in order to raise funds for the redevelopment of the old Davison unit which will become a new chemotherapy unit for local people.

Julie Shaw, Waiting List Co-ordinator for the Muriel Thoms Day Procedure Unit, came up with the idea whilst watching ITVs 'Full Monty Ladies Night'.

Having approached the staff on the Unit and received a positive response, she then opened it up to all female staff and the numbers grew. Receiving positive support from the male staff (inc the Chief Exec!) the project was underway.

The Grove Hotel on Overstrand Road, Cromer kindly agreed to the use of their setting for a photo shoot across two weekends with two local photographers, Lucy Stevens of Patricia Jean Photography and Andrea Hudson who also offered to give their time and photos for free. Help with the formatting and printing was covered by Colourprint of Norwich who kindly offered a much reduced rate to allow as much profit as possible to the charity. The Hospitals Facilities Management also offered a generous donation toward the printing costs.

Now imagine a day of chemo Maybe the beginning, middle or end Feeling that you can’t go on Needing support of an unexpected friend. Suddenly you hear the most uplifting sound And you look towards the bell’s place Standing there you see a stranger Or maybe a familiar face. You realize that this person Has completed their final lap And new friends all around the room Give a peaceful, supportive clap. As you look around you notice Everyone feels the joy & peace & hope Please hide away this moment Remember it, treasure it, and let it help you cope. Know that your day will come Of the story you can tell When you gave others support and hope The day you rang our bell.

For further information please contact Alex Hannah on 01603 646266.

The 'Calendar Girls' is now on sale at the Hospital, Friends pop up shop (open Tues & Thurs 11-4) and The Grove, retailing at £10. It is hoped to sell 350 copies.

For patients with cancer and their healthcare team, the ‘ringing of the bell’ is a significant moment – a point in time that signals the end of active treatment and the beginning of a life free of cancer and the staff would like to try and raise enough money to purchase the bell. We hope you enjoy our Calendar! This is a special one It possesses beautiful powers Its ring sounds through this entire room As if rung from the highest towers. Its sound is soft and pretty Truly a gentle sound to hear But the real magic goes much deeper As its gift is so very dear. Battling cancer takes enormous strength It’s an exhausting, overwhelming fight We all need to truly believe That at the end of the tunnel there is light.

Autumn

Sunlight catches autumn leaves spiralling from woodland trees, seagulls cry and fly inland for tasty titbits left by hand. The air is cool and crystal clear, it is my favourite time of year, I must get out into the sun and take my dog, Ben, for his run. There’s something new to see each day when we walk the country way, gone has the traffic and the noise – we’ve left behind those rowdy boys. I can feel the silence here, it’s just the same throughout the year, and in the quietness notice things like rabbits, mice and fluttering wings. The odd wild flower beneath the trees shows bright amongst the russet leaves. Peace and tranquillity I find here in the autumn of the year. Diane Berthelot

Dementia Care

As a Care Agency supporting individuals in the community, many of whom suffer with dementia I felt it was important for my staff to have this virtual experience. I am so glad we did and proud to be one of the first in our region, this was so valid and a timely reminder as to why those who suffer from Dementia react in the way they do in certain circumstances.

The whole training process was delivered professionally and our subsequent debrief covered so much more than anything that could be picked up in a text book because each of us experienced what it is really like first hand. One of our staff was reduced to tears many became frozen in shock and some experienced anger. We are so fortunate our experience was short lived but so many people live with this condition daily. The overriding message was it’s a different state of life but life never the less. When we consider that 1 in 4 of us will be affected by Dementia in some way; by knowing someone who has it or developing it ourselves within the next ten years it’s important to have as much understanding of this subject as possible. Next year when we have moved to our new offices on Garden Street we will repeat this training and invite family members to experience it for themselves. Tee Carver Registered Manager.

Ageing hands - in reverse! What is the difference between these 2 hands?

No, they don’t belong to a mother and daughter. These are pictures of the same hand and, guess what? - The one on the right is not 10 years younger but one year older. One year after Dr Sanjay Gheyi treated it at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic -that is. So what is the secret? Dr Gheyi often hears women say-‘I have my mothers hands’ or ‘my hands make me look older than I really am’. Well if this applies to you, read on… You too can reverse ageing of your hands so they don’t give your age away.

As we age we lose the hyaluronic acid in our skin, this is a protein and sugar molecule that binds water and keeps younger skin nice and plump. With a reduced amount of this substance in ageing skin the water content goes down resulting in crepey texture. We also lose collagen and accumulate pigment spots and broken capillaries on skin resulting in changes of ageing hands.

We are the

L VE

W

WHERE YOU LIVE

Now we can reverse these changes in a few short lunchtime treatments. The process starts with a thorough consultation with Dr Gheyi. He takes high quality digital pictures and these are assessed on the computer screen to determine a plan of action.

If loose or crepey skin is the main issue then minute injections of hyaluronic acid [HA] filler are made in the skin. The procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic with a tiny needle so there is no pain or discomfort. This is a natural product, which binds water and restores skin vitality and texture. Best results are achieved after a series of these injections. These also have a preventative value as HA has been shown to have antioxidant action. If pigment, age spots or broken capillaries are the main issue then IPL/ laser skin rejuvenation is performed. This again is a no downtime painless procedure. Flashes of bright light help achieve complexion blending and make pigment and broken vessels fade or disappear completely. If the concerns are only minimal and you are after a one off treatment for a special occasion then diamond microdermabrasion can help.

NWRTH WALSHAM

But, what if the hands appear very old? Here Dr Gheyi may recommend laser resurfacing to remove raised areas of thickened, pigmented or very lax skin. This however requires 3-5 days of downtime as old skin is replaced by new skin which is free from blemishes.

WrWxham

Modern technology and medical expertise now makes it possible to reverse ageing changes in your hands- whatever you feel your hand age is, it is never too late and best of all these are all ‘knifeless procedures’ and very affordable.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FP Cert. BCAAM has triple board certifications in Surgery, Family Medicine and Anti-ageing Medicine. He is Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic in Norfolk. He specialises in ‘no downtime’ gentle laser facials to more invasive laser resurfacing procedures and ‘knifeless’ laser surgery for lumps, bumps and skin tags in addition to botulinum toxins, dermal fillers and leg vein treatments. Beach cleans prove a hit with forward-thinking businesses

North Norfolk District Council invests in equipment to enable larger groups of eco-aware individuals to partake in campaign

district’s beaches (six of them being Blue Flag beaches) rubbish-free.

The #2minutebeachclean has been a popular activity for many along the North Norfolk coast since they were introduced in 2017. An additional five beach clean boards, sponsored by NNDC, were installed in April this year and have continued to be popular.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has boosted the number of litter pickers available along the coast following the huge popularity and success of the #2minutebeachclean campaign.

NNDC has received enquiries from larger groups keen to join in the campaign and these new pickers mean that even more people can get involved. NNDC also provides thick plastic bin bags with hoops and will collect the rubbish the groups find at the beach.

It means that more people can use the beach-cleaning equipment, which has been available for smaller groups for some time to help keep the

The most recent group that has taken advantage of the litter picking equipment was a sales team from Mars Wrigley Confectionery. They photo: MARS undertook the beach clean as part of their volunteer program and wanted to do something for the area covered by their sales division.

To request the hire of the equipment call 01263 513811 or email cleansing@north-norfolk.gov.uk

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust

Lifeboat training - on a canal

Think ‘lifeboat’ and most imagine vessels launching into choppy seas. But along Norfolk's vulnerable coastline crews must also hone their flood-rescue skills, especially with the approach of winter.

Volunteers with Mundesley Independent Lifeboat have been practising their swift-water rescue and waterentry techniques five miles inland from their seaside home, on the North Walsham and Dilham Canal.

Coxswain Colin Plummer had 12 of his 20-plus crew of volunteers at Ebridge, including juniors, and they kept busy refining techniques a little upstream from the walkers, fishermen and model-boat enthusiasts enjoying Ebridge Mill Pond.

The lifeboat men and women were practising saving lives in situations like the storm surge of December 2013 when the crew rescued 42 people from their flooded homes in Walcott, working with WEVA - the Walcott Emergency Volunteers Association.

"It's very useful for us to have the canal nearby. It's close and very convenient," said Colin.

Ivan Cane, Chairman of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust, said he was very pleased that the restored section of the 19th-century waterway was in regular use by so many sections of the community.

Empty homes – Council action to help get properties back into use

North Norfolk District Council has been pioneering an award winning approach to bringing empty homes back into use across the district Using an ‘enforcement board’, collaborative approach for the last four years the Council has helped to bring hundreds of homes back into use through a wide range of action from working together with owners to support renovations, demolition and re-building to taking enforcement action and undertaking compulsory purchase where owners fail to make positive changes.

Currently, less than 1% of North Norfolk’s housing stock is classed as being empty which is below the national average. In the last twelve months, North Norfolk District Council has reduced the number of empty properties by 20% from 603 to 482.

Where necessary, an application for a Compulsory Purchase Order could be made, which would see the homeowner instructed by the Government to sell their property to the Council. In February this year, the Council successfully completed the compulsory purchase of two properties in Sculthorpe that were left empty since they were built in the late 1990s.

In many cases, long term empty properties are associated with antisocial behaviour, including illicit drinking and drug-use and blight local communities. Properties left empty can fall into disrepair and become dilapidated and dangerous very quickly. North Norfolk District Council will take action against owners who are not prepared to get on with the job of returning a property back into use and will use enforcement powers where necessary.

He added "The canal at Ebridge can offer the local community a water-based facility, which we hope that other organisations will use. We look forward to groups coming forward looking to organise raft races,

duck races, paddle-boarding experiences – maybe even a group performing Handel’s Water Music from a pontoon in the middle of the pool!"

North Norfolk District Council launches its Business Awards

Second year of celebrating the best in the district gets under way The second North Norfolk Business Awards are now open for entries – and businesses across the district are being encouraged to put themselves forward to win one of the prestigious titles.

The 2019 awards (#NNBA19) are being organised and hosted by North Norfolk District Council. The 2018 awards, which were held back in February, saw scores of entries, and it is expected that the competition will be even stronger this time.

Following feedback, the number of categories has been increased to eight with the introduction of a Small Business award. It means that businesses of all sizes and in all sectors should be able to find a suitable category to enter. The awards are free to enter.

Sponsors of the awards include Eastlaw, the Fakenham & Wells Times, Menta, New Anglia LEP, the North Norfolk News and Thursford Christmas Spectacular.

Judging will take place early in 2019. Once the shortlists have been drawn up, the awards night will be held at Gresham’s School, Holt, in February, where the eight winners will be unveiled.

The full list of categories is Agriculture, Horticulture & Countryside; Business Growth; Environment; Innovation; New Business; Small Business; Tourism & Hospitality; and Young People & Skills.

To enter, please visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/nnba

The awards night will again be hosted by Chris Sargisson, chief executive of Norfolk Chamber of Commerce.

Cllr Wyndham Northam

‘It is with great sadness that North Norfolk District Council announces the death of Cllr Wyndham Northam at the weekend, following a short illness.

He was much admired and hugely respected by those he worked with, both officers and politicians.

Cllr Northam, who was 89 years old, gave a lifetime to public service. He served a total of 15 years for the Mundesley ward on the District Council, including seven years on the Cabinet. He brought a great deal of expertise to the Council working on his finance portfolio. He was a 18

Norfolk County Councillor for a total of 12 years, finishing in 2017, and a member of Mundesley Parish Council (Chairman in 1997/98).

He also had previous local government service as a member of Mountain Ash Urban District Council in Wales from 1959 to 1972 (Chairman in 1965).

He served in the Royal Navy from 1945 to 1954, specialising in radar and communications, and worked as a station master and traffic controller for British Rail from 1954 to 1963. From then until 1992, he was a member of a major finance house, specialising in administration and credit control.

Cllr Northam is survived by his wife Sylvia and their son James.’

Pushing the boundaries - neighbour disputes and how to resolve them Amanda Nudds, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Neighbour disputes are nothing new and can arise for many reasons. One of the most common neighbour disputes relates to boundaries. Boundary disputes are often complex, and as the parties are frequently emotionally involved, it can be stressful and therefore important to try and reach a resolution as soon as possible, although it is not unusual for parties to be arguing over very small areas of land over long periods of time.

Parties will usually consider their boundary to be marked by a physical feature on the land such as a hedge or fence but these structures are not always consistent with Land Registry plans. It is often only when physical features such as these are removed or called into question that the actual position of the boundary is queried.

The first attempt at resolving any boundary dispute should always be to approach your neighbour first to see if there is a way forward to resolve issues amicably between you. This is not always possible and depends on the extent of the issue, how long it has been going on for and the relationship between the parties. As each dispute is factually different, a solicitor can provide specific advice on the issues you are experiencing and on the best course of action to try and resolve matters.

Initially it is important to establish the boundary

from deeds, documents and evidence, and consider whether they have been amended in any way – perhaps by informal agreement or by one party’s conduct over time. If you have tried to resolve the issue directly with your neighbour but your attempts have been unsuccessful, a solicitor can write to your neighbour to set out your position and try to work towards a satisfactory resolution for all parties.

There are occasions when correspondence between the parties still does not resolve matters. Before embarking on Court proceedings which can be an expensive process and take many months, the parties should consider Alternative Dispute Resolution. This is a term used to describe a range of formal methods for resolving disputes which can include mediation, adjudication and expert determination. If the parties cannot agree to resolve matters this way, or if mediation has been attempted but no agreement reached, then ultimately Court or Property Tribunal proceedings will be the final stage.

Life with Grandpa

Life with Grandpa is Pat Pinsent’s first venture into fiction for young readers. She moved from London to north Norfolk in 2012 because of her husband’s Alzheimers. Using an invented 10 year old granddaughter Debbie as narrator, Pat builds on her own experience as a carer for her husband, creating incidents which are both amusing and realistic, and sometimes embarrassing to a young girl.

‘Debbie isn’t happy when Granny and Grandpa sell their house and come to live with her family in the country. Now she and her little brother won’t be able to stay with her grandparents and have day trips to the zoo or the London Eye. But what is worse, Grandpa has dementia and Debbie dreads having to spend time with an old man who doesn’t even remember who she is …

Living in the same house as Grandpa does indeed present Debbie with some challenges but it also has its funny moments. At last she comes to realise that old people were young once!’

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Cassandra, Cressida, Layla and Mali, all under one year old, have gone to new homes since last time. We do still have several young cats in care, but also some lovely slightly older ones; cats like King Tut, who has such a lovely nature, we are surprised he is still with us, and Chewy, who loves people but not other cats. If you are looking for a new companion please consider giving a home to one of the older ones. Another cat has been handed into our care as she was taken to the vets as a stray. This little cat has not had the best of times recently as she is very thin

and had a dreadful tummy upset when she joined us. Stephanie raided her freezer for fish, as even the special food we usually give cats in these situations was not working. Thankfully, she soon began to recover and is now on a diet of fish plus the special food mentioned previously. Because we are not sure how old she is and, as she was in such a bad condition that we could not rule out illnesses which would result in weight loss, the vets did a full blood test rather than the usual one where we test for FIV/FELV. Thankfully these all came back as normal. She will be going back to the vets this week so that they can monitor her progress and Stephanie will replenish her freezer so that she can continue her path back to good health. We are always happy to help with the cost of neutering feral colonies, and although we cannot help with catching the cats and getting them to the vets, we can loan one of our traps for this purpose. Because they will not be able to guarantee when the cats will go into the trap, we ask the person who will be responsible for catching them, to discuss the situation with the vets concerned. It will depend on which of the 5 veterinary practices we use for neutering how they will need to proceed. Some will be able to hold the cats overnight, if caught later in the day, while others can fit the cats in at the end of their operating list for the day. Once all the cats in the colony have been neutered we do ask that they make sure they return the traps to us as they are valuable items of equipment and may be required for another colony, to catch a stray or timid cat, or even to reunite a cat with its

owner. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be Ulysses, nice friendly able to help with young cat who came in any other enquiries. The number also ap- from a home with too many plies for those wishcats ing to take dvantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB

Our ‘Amazon’ Warriors, the new Ladies’ Team, played their very first match away to Besthorpe and incredibly managed to win four games.

It is an amazing achievement to play your first ever match, with all the nerves that go with representing a Club, along with a new environment, strange format of games and actually having something riding on every point, to then come away winning games straight off the bat. I cannot congratulate our Ladies enough and wish them all the very best in their next match, away to a very strong Mid-Norfolk Team in Dereham!

Our Men’s 1st Team were also away to Besthorpe Men’s 2nd team. Last year this fixture was on a fine wire, with only the smallest of margins separating our teams. So to turn up and find their 2nd Team now contains half of last year’s 1st Team, our Men were a little apprehensive and nervous to start with. However, once the nerves settled, our Men romped home to a 6 -3 victory over a much-improved Besthorpe team!

The Warriors’ Men’s 2nd Team played host to Lingwood 2, again bringing a stronger team than last year. What was a fairly easy win for Lingwood last year turned out to be an incredible fight, the score went one way, then the other with our guys not quite managing to turn them over and losing a very respectable 6-3.

Remember, we have two Men’s Teams, a Mixed Team and a Ladies’ Team, so if you fancy earning a place in a team, just come along to our Club night every Wednesday 8 - 10pm!

11.15am – 12.45pm at North Walsham Sports Centre, £5 per person, for all ages and abilities, just come along!

Our next event is a Quiz Night on Saturday 17 November, 7pm for a 7.30pm start,

for teams of 4 or less (ÂŁ10 per team), hosted at North Walsham Sports Centre with its Licensed Bar. This is a normal quiz, featuring some unusual categories, with free crisps and biscuits for every team entered. It will be fun and will help us raise funds for the Club, no need to book, just turn up, hope to see you there and please tell everyone!

Finally a quick message of Good Luck to Ray Green and Sam Ruff who are travelling to Ipswich to compete in a National Tournament next weekend and a huge thank you to Labone Indian Restaurant for sponsoring our new kit!

For those who would like Badminton coaching, we have a new regular Group Coaching Session which is every Saturday from

Golfing pupils are a class act

Primary school pupils in north Norfolk have been getting a taste of golf in their sports lessons.

Coaching at school and on the course is being enjoyed at Mundesley Golf Club by youngsters from Colby Primary and Mundesley Junior and First schools. They are shown how to drive, putt and get out of bunkers - while having fun with team games.

Club professional Ryan Pudney said “We aim to give the children a positive and enjoyable experience in the hope they might take up the sport one day. It also teaches them good life values such as manners and Youngsters from Colby Primary School patience. And it is great to enjoy trying golf with Mundesley Club see them making progress, Professional Ryan Pudney which can only be done Photo: Richard Batson with sticking at it - in an age when many things are instant.

Mundesley Golf Club is hoping to expand its youth work to other schools and youth organisations.

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis Maximum for Lester by Crosscourts edge Cobras In the First Division, NW Cobra’s Richard Porritt, Ben Lester and Andrew Weston hosted Crosscourt’s Rod Goffin, John Welsh and Steve Dams with Goffin comfortable in the opener against Porritt before very good attacking play saw Lester edge Welsh 13-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-6. Weston then produced a great performance to defeat Dams 11-7, 11-9, 11-5 before Lester produced the better attacking play at the crucial moments as he beat Goffin in four. The next two battles went the way of the visitors as Dams beat Porritt in four and Welsh defeated Weston 11-7, 15-13, 11-7. Lester completed a deserved maximum in four against Dams before there were wins in straight for Goffin and Welsh against Weston and Porritt respectively. A vital doubles saw Lester and Weston nearly claw back a two set deficit against Goffin and Welsh but the Crosscourt duo won the decider 11-4 to seal a tight 6-4 win. LCC Crab’s Hayden Kerr, Chris Francis and Neil Edwards hosted NW Echoes Frank Weston, Phil Mole and Gudi Scham (the latter two both playing up). Big hitting from Kerr took the opener against Weston and the Crab also won the final singles of the night against Scham in three. The eight battles in-between all went the way of the visitors with six won in straight, Francis taking Weston the distance and Mole’s

maximum including a 12-10 in the fifth win against Kerr. Francis and Kerr won the doubles against Weston and Scham in five, but Echoes took the match 7-3. In the Premier Division, Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner hosted NW Beta’s Mark Blackburn, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone. A crucial passage of play saw Stone recover from 2-8 to take the second 12-10 and a two set lead against Wilson before a couple of lucky nets including on match-point saw him close out the win in four. Wilson took a brace but again went the distance in both his remaining games. De Neve picked up a set against Blackburn while Warner took a maximum including a very entertaining 15-13, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8 win against Stone. Wilson and De Neve won a tight doubles in four against Blackburn and Hook to seal a 6-4 win for Backhanders. NW Alpha’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and David Binns (playing up) hosted Aylsham Hathor’s Peter Ward and Ray and Jonathan Gale. Binns went the distance in all three of his outings, picking up a single against Ray Gale 12-10 in the fifth. Beane and Baldock-Yaxley both took full houses with no sets dropped in the singles and a five set doubles win against Peter Ward and Jonny Gale as Alpha came through 8-2.

Two wins from two since the last article.

The Raiders are second in their league following wins versus Lowestoft & Yarmouth and Norwich Medics.

First was Luton away where, in glorious sunny conditions, Vikings swept aside the hosts 40 - 13. Save for five scintillating minutes in the second half when they scored three converted tries it was a fairly scrappy affair.

In stark contrast Eton Manor came to Scottow on a wet cold day. Recent years have seen many close full blooded encounters with ‘The Manor’ and this was no exception. To add to the occasion, the visitors included two former Vikings, plus it was third against fourth. 22 -7 ahead at the break, the home side did outstandingly well to withstand lots of pressure before pulling away late on for a memorable 37 -7 win. Lachlan Brown - Bates (pictured) got two of the six tries. This took them up to second ahead of their trip to leaders Rochford on 3rd November.
