North Walsham & Bradfield Flower Club 1958-2018
On 24 October around 90 members and guests enjoyed a special ‘Open’ Meeting at The Atrium, followed by traditional Afternoon Tea to celebrate the Club’s 60th Anniversary.
Dutch Master Florist, Hans Haverkamp entertained us with a masterful demonstration which was followed by full Afternoon Tea and cutting of the birthday cake.
The following day, Hans led us in a workshop at The Community Centre, using willow to make a construction that can be used with flowers at any time of the year. A thoroughly enjoyable two days for all of us that took part. CHRISTMAS WREATHS All profits to Friends of Cromer Hospital.

Our lovely Post Office and Open Reach beds are coming along very well. A very kind lady in the town gave us five lovely acers, two of which have been placed in the Open Reach bed and should look really good in there. We still have some more plants to put in each of these beds. The Bug Hotel is in the process of being constructed in the Open Reach bed and will shortly be filled with all sorts of bug friendly things. Both of these beds are now up for sponsorship and if anyone would like to sponsor either of these please contact our Chairman Chris Roberts on 01692 402174 to discuss details.
We are still experiencing vine weevil in some of our tubs even though they have been treated - the cyclamen, and now the violas are being affected at the moment.
We are still experiencing a dog poo problem. At the moment it seems to be worse in our two beds on Yarmouth Road as well as in the churchyard. It may be of interest to people to know that North Norfolk District Council are at the moment having a big push on getting people to clean up dog poo as well as cigarette butts. The fine for being found guilty of this is £80, and I do know of several people who have been warned on the cigarette front.
The time has come once again for our Annual General meeting, and everyone is welcome to attend. It will be on 10 December, in the Council Offices in Kings Arms Street at 10am.
We at In Bloom would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas, and a Blooming Brilliant New Year. North Walsham Round Table will be out with Santa’s sleigh in the following areas on the following dates :

Another Fireworks Success at The Lighthouse
Despite a very wet day on the Thursday, the weather was perfect for Friday evening’s fireworks at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott.
Always a spectacular display, this year was no exception.
This year’s theme was the centenary of the end of World War 1 and included a roll of honour of all those lost from Walcott in both wars.

NENBC meeting with Mike Dawson and friends 'Champions of the Flyway' on 29 November 7.30pm – 9.30pm at Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Mike says 'having watched other people having fun racing around the deserts of Southern Israel for the last four years, a group of us thought we ought to have a go at raising some money for conservation and get a few lifers into the bargain. This is the story of what it's about, what we saw and what we hope to do in 2019'. Come and enjoy a 'winners' tale.
Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. National Trust launches fundraising appeal to secure the future of environmental conditions for temperature and Blickling’s nationally important library humidity that the collection needs.
An ambitious new conservation project to secure the long-term future of one of the most significant book collections in the country has been launched by the National Trust, and with it a fundraising appeal to support the work that’s needed.
The £325,000 building project will see vital work get underway at Norfolk’s Blickling Estate, as part of a larger five year project to not only save the library, but bring it to life for visitors. The hall is home to one of the most significant country house libraries in England, with more than 12,500 volumes making up the largest and oldest book collection in the conservation charity’s care.
As part of ongoing conservation work a number of risks to the books have been identified, including from mould and death watch beetle. The conservation project will see work take place that will ensure the library
is fit for the future.
Paul Coleman, the National Trust’s Project Manager, said “Historic buildings like Blickling bring multiple challenges with them over time and need continual care for the precious collections they hold, and the work we need to do in the library is about the long-term future of the books here.”
The collection includes the oldest book cared for by the National Trust - the first Complete Bible to be printed in English – as well as first editions of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Emma.
“It’s not unusual for issues such as leaks or pest damage to appear in places like this, but without this essential work to stop them in their tracks, the potential damage to the collection would be irreversible. We know that a visit to the library is the highlight for many visitors to Blickling, so we’re confident that together we can take it into the next stage of its long history.”
Work on the project is due to start in January. As well as repairing leaks, the conservation work will include creating the right
Librarian John Gandy has spent the last eight years cataloguing the collection. He said: “The library here at Blickling is absolutely magnificent – from medieval manuscripts all the way through to Jane Austen first editions. Some titles are unique to Blickling and with others there are only a small number of copies in the world, but the books are under threat, and we need to do something about it.”
“One of the great highlights of my job here is working so closely with this very special collection and this project is all about taking an historic collection into the future so that we can share it with people for generations to come.”

She has run her own business and a not-for-profit social enterprise. She has many years’ experience of teaching enterprise and creative thinking to would-be entrepreneurs, sixth form students and university students.
“As I am new to the area, I lack contacts but would very much like to offer my skills to a charitable enterprise that thinks I could contribute as a business consultant, using that term in its widest sense. FAQs and Top Tips for First Time Buyers
Gaynor Smith . Property Solicitor . Clapham & Collinge Solicitors
Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. This is why our team offer the very best straightforward, friendly service and will guide you through the entire process to make sure your transaction goes through as smoothly and as quickly as possible. We hope that these frequently asked questions, that first time buyers are so often seeking the answers to, will provide you with the basics to put you at ease throughout the transaction.
Q. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property? A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack. Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage offer. The buyer then considers this report and raises questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.
Duty Land Tax and Land Registration Fees. There are bound to be times during the process when you’ll feel like there are constant demands for your cash. Be prepared that there will be lots of fees to pay for and you’ll need to have money available.
2. Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.
3. Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what
can be a long and confusing process. If you have concerns do not stay silent, it is important to raise these with your legal advisor at the earliest opportunity. Q. What additional tips would you give to first time buyers about to step onto the property ladder? The biggest tip that we can give a first time buyer is to instruct a legal advisor they trust. As a first time buyer it is all new and potentially daunting, but the right Conveyancer will take the time to guide them through each step of the process. Your Conveyancer is also crucial when it comes to speeding up the process, flagging up potential problems and dealing with them quickly too.
If you are looking to buy or sell your home, the Clapham & Collinge Client Relations team are on hand to provide you with a no obligation quote. Call today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.
Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients? Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved. Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly?
There are a few things that buyers can do to help the process along:-
1. Prepare your finances If you need a mortgage to purchase your first home, we would recommend obtaining a mortgage in principle before putting in any offers. This way you will know how much you are eligible to borrow. You should look closely at the quotation provided by your legal advisor so you know exactly how much you need in total to purchase the property, including Stamp

East Anglian Air Ambulance mark 100th anniversary of Armistice Day by flying the poppy over the region
Earlier this month East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopters – Anglia One and Anglia Two - flew the poppy over the region to pay homage to all those who suffered or lost their lives at war.
The poppy decals were placed on the door of the charity’s two H145 helicopters as a mark of respect and to commemorate the contribution of military and civilian service men and women who sacrificed so much for us. Both helicopters were on task over the Remembrance Day weekend.
The initiative was brought in by the charity’s aviation partners Babcock UK Onshore, who kindly provided the poppies to their customers.
You can follow EAAA on their Facebook page ‘East Anglian Air Ambulance’ and on Twitter as @EastAngliAirAmb. If you’d like to find out more about the charity or how you get involved go to their website www.eaaa.org.uk. North Walsham Times 555 November 24th 2018
Government considering closing ‘holiday homes’ tax loophole following Norfolk MP’s efforts
The Government has announced a consultation on business rates treatment for holiday homes after Norman Lamb MP and local Liberal Democrats highlighted a loophole which allows homeowners to avoid paying tax on second homes.
Following a freedom of information request this summer, Mr Lamb, the MP for North Norfolk, discovered the loophole is costing Norfolk councils a staggering £1.8 million in 2018 alone.
Mr Lamb and local Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for the Chancellor to close the loophole, and a petition by Mr Lamb on the issue was signed by 1,769 people.
Now the Government has announced a consultation on the criteria under which holiday homes become chargeable to business rates rather than council tax, citing a concern that some owners of properties that are not genuine businesses may seek to reduce their tax liability by falsely declaring that the property is available to let.
In England, any property that is “available to let” for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than £12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property.
North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-home holiday lets are claiming 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19 – at a cost of £1,873,998.
Mr Lamb said “It is encouraging that the Government has listened to concerns raised about this unfair loophole. Hard-pressed residents in North Norfolk are paying higher council tax bills to fund vital local services, while some owners of second homes that are registered as holiday lets are getting away with paying no tax at all on that property. All the while, this loophole is costing councils a staggering sum of money which could be spent on care for elderly people, children’s services or housing for local people.
“I hope the consultation will be delivered without the delay, and I will be writing to the Chancellor to ensure that is the case.”
MP plants trees as part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy
Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, recently joined over 500 other MPs to plant trees as part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, a network of forest conservation initiatives to mark Her Majesty's lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.
The trees - two silver birch, two rowan, and a hazel – were planted in North Walsham with local the help of guerrilla gardener Simon Weal.
They were donated to Mr Lamb thanks to a partnership between the Woodland Trust, Sainsbury’s and ITV, which in April screened a landmark documentary, The Queen's Green Planet, following Her Majesty the Queen and this ambitious legacy project which brings together her deeply held commitment to the Commonwealth and her little-known love of trees.
At the heart of the film was a conversation between the Queen and Sir David Attenborough filmed in the gardens of Buckingham Palace last summer. In a rare opportunity to see the Queen talking informally to Sir David, the conversation ranged from climate change, to conkers and of course trees, and was watched by 6.4 million viewers, making it ITV’s most watched factual programme of the year.
In support of the programme the Woodland Trust provided 50,000 trees for ITV viewers, and via the Rt Hon Frank Field MP, who conceived the QCC initiative, also offered a special commemorative pack to every MP in the UK. North Walsham Times 555 November 24th 2018

Christmas Day Lunch in North Walsham
On Christmas Day there will be a Christmas Lunch in North Walsham's Community Centre provided for anyone living in North Walsham who would otherwise be alone on the day.
It is a very happy occasion which has been taking place for around 20 years now. It is organised by a group of volunteers on behalf of Churches Together in North Walsham.
Very kindly, we are given free use of the Community Centre, and all other costs are covered by donations, in kind or money, from various charitable groups or individuals in the town, so there is no charge for the meal. There is a retiring collection for local charities should anyone wish to contribute.
The day for guests begins about 12.30pm with a welcome drink and finishes about three hours later, after the Queen's Speech. If required, transport can be arranged.
Those already on our database do not need to do anything - you can expect to be contacted fairly soon. If, for some reason, you seem to have been missed, then do contact us via the contact details given below. Equally, there may well be others in the town who would like to join us this year for the first time, or after a gap. You would be very welcome. Or you may have company yourself but know of someone else who would be alone and might like to come along please let us know. You can phone John on 01692 405119 or email Felicity felicitynnorfolk@yahoo.co.uk

It always comes around so quickly, but the festive period is almost upon us so many of us are already thinking about gifts for families and pets.
With this in mind we thought it would be timely to mention one of the best gifts you can give, that of giving blood. It sounds a little gruesome, but we have a need for blood transfusions with our patients in the same way we do in human hospitals. Only last week we had a very poorly patient losing blood who needed and emergency blood transfusion. Fortunately, we were able to call upon Bronson, a beautiful German Shepherd cross who was able to donate a unit of blood the morning it was needed.
We have a list of eligible donors for emergencies such as last week, but it is something that constantly needs updating as patients get older or may not be available at short notice. In order to be a blood donor dogs must be between 2 and 6 years of age, over 20kg in weight and healthy. If you would like your own dog to be added to our list of possible blood donors then please give us a call at the surgery on 01692 403202, you never know they may save another dog’s life one day.
Merry Christmas from the
ATRIUM INEMA We look forward to seeing you soon.

We would also like to take this opportunity in the lead up to Christmas to remind everyone of the potential dangers to pets that annually rear their head in the festive period.
Here is a short list of the major foods and items that can be harmful to cats and dogs: Raisins, sultanas, grapes, chocolate, macadamia nuts, bones, blue cheese, lilies, anti-freeze and batteries.
The best way to spoil your pets over Christmas is with love and attention and some nice long walks, avoiding the extra treats and tit bits will be better in the long run! Toby Morrell Westover Vets

£1814.04 raised at our Christmas Sale on 10 November.
Many thanks to our volunteers for manning the stalls on the day and to all our cat loving friends for coming and supporting us
Kittens, Mango and Misha have recently gone to their new home and someone is very interested in giving Flossy a new home, although not immediately. Grace, the little stray mentioned last time, is now looking so much better. She is no longer receiving four portions of fish plus the special biscuits for tummy upsets per day, as the fish has now been replaced by fresh chicken. Stephanie will gradually introduce other cat food into her diet but it is important at this stage to do this gradually. She is a little sweetheart and just loves lots of fuss and cuddles. Once she is fully fit, she will be put up for adoption.
Stephanie has recently received several calls relating to stray cats. However, until we can be sure the cat is indeed a stray and not someone’s much loved pet, we cannot put them on the waiting list to come into care. Cats do tend to visit houses close to their homes, especially if their owners are out during the day. They will beg for food even if they have recently been fed so, unless they are in very poor condition, it is best not to feed them. If possible, take them to the vets to see if they have been microchipped and, if not, we or the vets can supply you with paper collars to try and identify whether or not they have a home. Even those that look in poor condition may have a home and could be receiving treatment or be on a special diet. This is often the case with older cats, who could have diabetes or thyroid problems and are often quite thin with dull coats. Again, if possible, get the cat to the vets to be checked for a microchip. Once it has been established that the cat is a stray we can put it on our waiting list for when a pen becomes free.
I recently received a phone call from one of our volunteers who had
been informed that a cat had been hit by a car and, although still alive, it was not looking good. Although a Sunday night I advised them to ring Westover and they were able to take the cat to the surgery where the vet was waiting to see what could be done. Sadly, the poor cat died but the vets were able to keep it in case an owner turned up. This is the second emergency recently when we have had to contact Westover out of hours, the last time being a Saturday afternoon and, again, the vet was there ready to do what was necessary. It is good to know that there is someone there whenever they are needed.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
Romeo, a nice friendly cat, no longer looking for romance, just a lovely new home
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Normally you don't interfere with a nest with hoglets but when I had a telephone call three weeks ago about a nest, I made the decision to collect and bring them into care.
Because it is so late in the year, the hoglets would not weigh enough to survive outside. What a good mum! There are five hoglets who now weigh approximately 200 gms each, so I have Another litter of three who now separated them from mum and were found without a mum she is having a well-earned rest in an outside hut and the hoglets are housed inside, three in one hut and two in another.

‘Head First’ into a New Era!
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham have just announced their first Head Boy and Girl.
This year it was decided to give the children an opportunity to become more involved in the decision making and support throughout the school. Several children from Year 6 put themselves forward for the role beginning with an application letter.
Once shortlisted they then had a panel which included the Head Teacher, Deputy Head and a member of the governing body, who interviewed them.
The Head Boy position was given to Gus Mitchell and the Head Girl was given to Lily Owers.
Gus said that the reasoning behind putting himself forward was that he wanted to help all the children who needed support throughout the school and that it was important to him to be there to help if there were any issues and helping the staff if it was needed.
Both Gus and Lily have already put their
‘people skills’ to work by showing new teachers around the school, greeting parents during a Reading Afternoon and being involved, along with the school council, in deciding ideas for charity and school fundraising.
When Lily was asked why she wanted to become Head Girl she said, “I want to make the school a happier place and help people sort out their problems and worries.”
Gus and Lily are already making a huge difference to the school. Their bright, caring and cheerful personalities make them perfect role models for the children to look up to.
fundraising for charities.
They both hope that by the end of their term in July they will have left a legacy for the next Head Boy and Girl and hope that they have done a great job!
Their ‘to do’ list this year includes creating an ideas box, a worries box, and getting involved with fundraising with Could you bring the magic of reading a fun run. Their to a child in your community? hope is to buy more Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that transforms children’s life equipment for the chances by recruiting and supporting volunteers and placing them in younger children and local primary schools. These volunteers work with children who have expand the Jungle either fallen behind with their reading, lack confidence, or struggle with Gym as well as their fluency, comprehension or vocabulary.
Millfield’s Global Award!
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham has for the second time running, received the prestigious honour of The International Schools Award.
The Full International School Award is a British Council accreditation scheme rewarding schools with a notable global element in their curriculum and one which very few schools achieve, reaccreditation.
Millfield is part of a global network of International schools with links to India, Spain, Japan and South Korea. Mr Robin Smith, who is the school’s International co-ordinator, helps to bring diverse cultural opportunities into Millfield’s curriculum which enables the children to learn and develop a better understanding of the world.
For the first time ever the school is taking part in a student and teacher exchange programme over the next two years funded through the Erasmus Project and will be welcoming children from a Spanish school.
Mr Smith said “It’s fantastic that the children are able to connect with their peers around the world. They learn so much about themselves and discover exciting cultures and make new friends”.
Millfield is looking forward in welcoming their ‘new friends’ next year!

Earlier this month UK Coastguard alerted the volunteers of Happisburgh Lifeboat Station, who had just returned to the station from their Sunday morning training exercises, to reports of a woman who had entered the water at Walcott sea front to retrieve her dog.
The station’s D Class lifeboat “Russell Pickering”, with Christian Larter at the helm and Cubitt Siely, David Loveday and Sean Thurston as crew. They proceeded to Walcott at full speed. On arrival on scene they were informed that the woman was ashore and did not require any service from the RNLI. The coastguard stood them down and they returned to station and made the lifeboat ready for service.
The advice from the RNLI is that if your dog enters the sea or any water then do not enter the water yourself. Try calling and encouraging your dog to return; if this does not happen and you are worried for your dog’s safety then call 999 and ask for Coastguard who will contact the Lifeboat who are happy to help. Most dogs will get their own way back to shore but the owners do not always get back to shore safely.

Friends of Cromer Museum
This year it is 250 years since the circus became accepted as an entertainment and art form in its own right so it was fitting that the first of this winter’s talks given by Gareth Davies and organised by the Friends of Cromer Museum dealt with the life of Pablo Fanque, one of the early pioneers of the circus.

Fanque’s career lasted until his death in May 1871 and had a number of ups and downs. His circus was very popular in the north of England but his life was not without tragedy. North Walsham Town Council awards grant of ÂŁ500 to support North Walsham Foodbank distribution centre Barry Hester, North Walsham Mayor and Town Councillor, recently met Adrian Rudman, Trustee of Cromer & District Foodbank and Team Leader of the North Walsham distribution centre, to handover a cheque for ÂŁ500 towards the running costs of the centre.
Adrian said ‘Our North Walsham distribution centre helped 475 residents including 179 children, with emergency food parcels in 2017/18. This donation will help us continue to provide the service we offer to North Walsham families and individuals, supporting them during times of crisis. In the autumn, we will see the role out of Universal Credit (UC) in this area and statistics released recently by the Trussell Trust show that in areas where UC has been introduced they have seen a 50% increase in the number of referrals the towns support will make the difference. We are extremely grateful.’
He added ‘At Cromer & District Foodbank, we don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three
across the UK.’
days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide social network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger
The foodbank has seen an increase in need year on year. Working closely with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, clients are signposted to whatever agency is best qualified to address the cause of crisis and to maximise client income. Foodbank has become the centre of a communitywide network of agencies that offers comprehensive support to those in need and disadvantaged.
With more than 150 local volunteers of all ages, including former clients that contribute more than 9500 hours per year, equivalent to more than five full-time members of staff, are overseen by our only paid member of staff, our project manager’.
We did it!
On behalf of Erpingham Festival of Crafts we would like to thank all those who took part in our craft fair this year; the crafters, those who gave up their time to help & all those who attended. We also need to thank some of the traders in the region who donated prizes for our raffle including Corner House in West Runton and Upstairs Downstairs in Cromer. Our charity this year was The Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group. We reached our goal and raised over ÂŁ1,000. Thank you all so much.
Norman Lamb’s Morning Yoga
Ten years after Norman Lamb opened Swanton Abbott Pre-School, he returned for a visit and was lucky enough to arrive just as the children were about to begin their daily yoga session.
Swanton Abbott Pre-School have been one of the first settings in Norfolk to pilot Yoga and Mindfulness in Early Years - research shows how mindfulness has a positive influence on young children and can help build resilience skills that will support them throughout life.
Norman said he was “really impressed to see yoga in action and to participate. This is exactly what pre-schools should be doing and I am excited to see it spreading across Norfolk. During his visit, the Councillor commented on the beautiful location of Swanton Abbott, which is used as the pre-schools Forest School and is home to a 12 foot tipi which hosts activities such as music sessions and story time.
Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, enjoying a morning yoga session with the children of Swanton Abbott Pre-School.
Teresa Drew, Manager of the Pre-School commented ‘It is great to see Norman, he was relaxed and at ease with the children. We have come a long way since our opening back in 2008 and I’m really pleased he was able to come and see our progress’.
Swanton Abbot Pre-School currently has sessions available for 2 - 4 year olds, Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. To arrange a visit please contact Teresa Drew on 01692 538987.

North Walsham Table Tennis Two good wins for Cobras In the First Division, LCC Lobster’s Chris Gould, Kevin Cardy and Char Edwards hosted NW Cobra’s Colin Smith, Richard Porritt and Andrew Weston. Gould took a maximum but was taken the distance by both Porritt and Smith. Cardy beat Weston in five who in turn edged out Edwards 14-12 in the fifth. Porritt and Smith both took braces and combined for a doubles win in three against Gould and Cardy to seal a 6-4 win. The following week Ben Lester took a fine maximum as Cobras beat LCC Dolphins 8-2. NW Echoes John Vaughan, Frank Weston and John Chapman hosted Aylsham Conqueror’s Ash Marsh, Rob Ollman and John Hall (playing up). Vaughan won the opener 12-10 in the fifth against Marsh. The remaining battles were all straights sets affairs with a maximum for Vaughan and Conqueror winning 7-3.
In the Premier Division, Aylsham Enterprise’s Danny Atkins, Andrew Latham and Ben Briggs hosted NW Alpha’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and David Binns (playing up) with Atkins winning the opener in five against Beane. Alpha went on to take the match 9-1 but were taken the distance on five occasions including both of Beane’s remaining outings while Baldock-Yaxley was taken to five by both Briggs and Atkins, the latter also failing to capitalise on a two set lead against Binns. In contrast the hosts had nothing left for the doubles – Beane and Binns winning for the loss of four points. NW Beta’s Mark Blackburn, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone hosted Gresham’s School A’s Haken Bennell, Colin Humphries and Jonathan Hancock with Bennell winning a tight opener in four against Stone. Blackburn played well all night to edge
An outstanding performance by the Vikings at unbeaten Rochford Hundred saw them eventually go down 29 - 10 in a game much closer than the score line suggests.
Early in the second half they took the lead 7 -5, the first time reportedly the well-resourced home side had been behind for more than two years, and they were still in it at 12-10 going into the final quarter before the hosts' huge pack finally got the better of their opponents.

NW Delta were beaten 5-0 in the second round of the Knockout Doubles Cup by Sharks but in the Second Division, they won a derby against NW Foxtrots 8-2. For Foxtrots, Jim Crossley played some brilliant defence to pick up a brace beating Tony Bispham in four and Sarah Tudhope in three. The two Deltas both took braces and were supported with a full house from Gudi Scham which included an 18-16, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 win against Crossley.
Norfolk born James Knight (pictured) was October's Vikings Red Lion Coltishall Player of the Month. "He's been playing better than ever," said Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters, "showing real maturity when it matters." Marsters stressed too the contributions James and fellow Assistant Coach Ryan Oakes made while he was off ill, "they really stepped up." James debuted in 2006 at 17, moving onto Leicester Academy, Bedford and Cambridge. After time in Australia he returned to Scottow in 2012/13 and has now made 122 appearances and with 412 points is the Club's ninth highest scorer. As well as his Vikings' responsibilities he coaches at Langley School and Leicester's Academy.
The Vikings are now third, ten points behind Rochford but only four ahead of sixth placed Old Haberdashers due at Scottow on the 17th. The Raiders are also doing well in their League, second after eight fixtures, their sole defeat against leaders Beccles.
