COUNTY’S BIGGEST NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORK DISPLAY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1 January 2019 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow - it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity.

Outgoing Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support. “It has gone on to attract larger and larger crowds, and consequently an increase in donations which helps pay for the following year's display and grants to local charities."

Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling £55,815 to local charities and good causes. Continued on page 4...

COUNTY’S BIGGEST NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORK DISPLAY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

Continued from front cover... To mark the 20th display, organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day to see more than 3000 firework shots light up the skies over the North Sea.

New Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said “As always, the advice is please arrive early and support the local businesses in town who do support the Fireworks committee.”

“To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War we will have a red glittering firework leaf sequence which lasts about one minute before the main display. There are also several exciting new sequences within the main display which will be new to Cromer this year and we are very excited to show these to everyone. New Year's Day Fireworks Cromer 2018 . I’m also excited to Kenneth Freeman Photography competition announce the winner sponsored by Hughes reintroduction of the torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display. I am very honoured that the trust of the fireworks committee has been entrusted to me, I can only hope I will be as long-standing as Jim Bond who has done an absolutely marvellous job.”

The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2020 display.

The bucket collection at the 2018 display raised a fantastic £10,021. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2019 display.

“Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display,” said Jim Bond.

Organisers are still looking for volunteers to bolster their official bucket collectors’ team. Please contact Cromer Town Council for more information or register at Cromer museum on New Year’s Day from 2pm.

Please see Cromer Town Council website (www.cromer-tc.gov.uk), the event’s Facebook page (‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) or Twitter feed (@NYDFireworks and @north_lodge) for updates.

Moving, moving, moving

Elite Care Cromer will be moving from 14 Brook Street to 4a Garden street on 2nd January.

It’s only a short distance but the larger office is necessary to accommodate our growing team. All our service users can be assured that despite moving calls will continue as normal. The telephone number remain the same, in fact the biggest difference is that our new office is upstairs but we do have a stair lift should it be required. Hard to believe we’ve been going for 8 years in 2019 and we will arrange an open day to celebrate in the New Year once we are settled and look forward to seeing you there.

Another record year

Once again the generosity of the residents of North Walsham and the surrounding area has enabled the local Poppy Appeal to achieve its best ever collection total.

To date this stands at an amazing £17,769, nearly £1,500 above the total at this time last year.

A Peaceful Christmas

As well as thanking the local residents and visitors for their generosity, I must express my gratitude to all the shops, businesses and local schools who hosted our collection tins and to a great team of helpers who, together with staff from Sainsburys and Waitrose, manned collection points in both stores for two weeks.

This fantastic total helps ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises.

FAQs and Top Tips for First Time Buyers

Gaynor Smith . Property Solicitor . Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. This is why our team offer the very best straightforward, friendly service and will guide you through the entire process to make sure your transaction goes through as smoothly and as quickly as possible. We hope that these frequently asked questions, that first time buyers are so often seeking the answers to, will provide you with the basics to put you at ease throughout the transaction. Q. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property?

A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack. Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage offer. The buyer then considers this report and raises

questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.

Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients? Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved. Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly?

2. Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.

3. Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what can be a long and confusing process. If you have concerns do not stay silent, it is important to raise these with your legal advisor at the earliest opportunity.

There are a few things that buyers can do to help the process along:-

Q. What additional tips would you give to first time buyers about to step onto the property ladder?

You should look closely at the quotation provided by your legal advisor so you know exactly how much you need in total to purchase the property, including Stamp Duty Land Tax and Land Registration Fees. There are bound to be times during the process when you’ll feel like there are constant demands for your cash. Be prepared that there will be lots of fees to pay for and you’ll need to have money available.

If you are looking to buy or sell your home, the Clapham & Collinge Client Relations team are on hand to provide you with a no obligation quote. Call today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.

1. Prepare your finances If you need a mortgage to purchase your first home, we would recommend obtaining a mortgage in principle before putting in any offers. This way you will know how much you are eligible to borrow.

The biggest tip that we can give a first time buyer is to instruct a legal advisor they trust. As a first time buyer it is all new and potentially daunting, but the right Conveyancer will take the time to guide them through each step of the process. Your Conveyancer is also crucial when it comes to speeding up the process, flagging up potential problems and dealing with them quickly too.

"It is with great sadness that following the resignation of some Officers and Committee Members and our inability to find someone to take over these positions we have had to make the regrettable decision to put the group “on hold”. No meetings or Fundraising will take place during 2019.

Mick Greenhalf will stay as Chairman and Jackie Greenhalf as Treasurer, in name only, just to keep the group open and with the hope that we can find some willing volunteers to take the group forward and carry on its good work but if no one is found by the end of 2019 then the group will officially close.

The Centre has been open for six years and moved from Folgate Road to a purpose build Day Centre at 2 Cornish Way, North Walsham earlier this year.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor attended to cut the ribbon.

Candle of Hope

I’m just a little candle but I can shed a nice bright light over the Christmas tree and presents on this very special night. It is time to say ‘thank you’ for all the good things we have had and the help that has been given through the good times and the bad. Let the New Year be a peaceful one and nations all unite. Let us think of Baby Jesus who was sent to put things right. Diane Berthelot

Plans for Artificial Grass Pitch in North Walsham Plans for an artificial grass sports pitch in North Walsham were approved at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet earlier this month. The facility, which would be available primarily for football, but with others sports depending on wider demand, will cost an estimated £860,000. It will be developed as a joint project between the Council, the Football Foundation and North Walsham High School. It will be available for both school and public use under the Dual Use Sports Centre arrangement in place between the Council and the school, and would increase participation in sport for a wide range of age groups. The facility shall be floodlit and fully enclosed, and provide improved parking and changing facilities on the school site. Under the proposals, the school will provide the land with North Norfolk District Council paying 40% of the capital cost, and the Football Foundation paying the remaining 60%. The need for the pitch has been made in a feasibility study commissioned by the Council, which identified an initial cost estimate of £810,000 for the pitch plus applications for funding, design and planning; plus another £50,000 to add a ‘shock pad’ system so the facility can cater for other sports such as rugby. The latter £50,000 cost was not eligible for Football Foundation grant funding, meaning the North Norfolk District Council contribution would be £374,000 and the Football Foundation contribution would be £486,000. The Council will largely recoup its capital costs via user income through the Dual Use Sports Centre arrangement, where the Council manages school sports facilities for community use outside school hours. That income shall also provide a ‘sinking fund’ for future renewal of the pitch surface which has an estimated lifetime of around ten years. A council spokesman said “We have been working with the Football Association (FA) for some time on this proposal and the need for the artificial grass pitch was

clearly made. In fact, Football Foundation grant funding is available for 60% of the capital cost, higher than the usual 50%, because there is such a clear demonstration of demand and need. “There is good demand from clubs locally and a particular emphasis on girls’ and women’s football. With Sport England’s involvement, the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, which runs across all sports and active leisure activities, will be at the forefront of operating the facility. “There is also a growing emphasis on walking football for older people to help them maintain activity and independence.” The Cabinet report recommends appointing the FA and its appointed consortium How the coastline at Bacton and Walcott would look after Sandscaping to provide the professional services required to design and oversee the project on the Council’s behalf. The current project timeline would see North Norfolk District Council submit a funding application for an April 2019 deadline, with a decision being made by the FA in July 2019 and completion before the end of 2019.

Rosie came in at only 150 gms and with one of her rear legs very swollen. She is on a 10 day course of antibiotics and we lanced it to relieve the pressure. Just over a week on, the swelling has just about gone and she is eating well and gaining weight. It is so rewarding when you get a good result especially knowing that she will be able to return to the wild in spring. On Saturday 8 December I had three new arrivals from different locations - an underweight juvenile, an adult female with an eye infection and Betty with an injured rear leg. With so many in care it's certainly going to be a busy winter. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Tanisha began the scheme when she was a pupil at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham. She received her first Bronze certificate for 30 hours in June 2014 and soon caught the learning bug to receive credits for her next certificates, but due to a miscalculation of awarded hours by the school’s coordinator, Tanisha was not granted her final certificates in 2017.

After communication with Children’s University a place was allocated at NCFC Graduation Ceremony in November for Tanisha to receive her final 12 certificates, culminating in the Gold Fellowship for 1000 hours of learning.

The Children’s University provides all children aged 5-14 years with the opportunity to take part in exciting and creative learning activities outside of the normal school day. The activities can be before or after school, at weekends and during the school holidays. Children can travel around Norfolk and the UK with their passport, collecting stamps as they go. Learning Destinations across the country provide memorable, fun and good quality learning opportunities. North Walsham Times 557 December 22nd 2018

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are delighted to report that Chewy has now been chosen and is already a much-loved member of his new household. Three more kittens have also left for their new homes and, although we will have stopped homing over the Christmas period by the time you read this, we do have several people interested in giving some of those still in care a new home.

At present we are helping with the cost of neutering feral cats at four locations and we always advise the people who are trapping the cats that it is important to ensure that all the cats are done. This is not always easy, but essential, if the colony is to be contained and the cats are to remain healthy. We have had instances where, because there has been interbreeding within the colony, young cats will have had health issues. A recent instance is one of the kittens taken to be neutered was found to have both male and female organs and needed a more complex operation, plus additional aftercare at the vets. It is now a priority to get the mother cat neutered. It is always challenging but worthwhile in the end.

Last time we mentioned some of the fundraising undertaken by our volunteers. Not to be forgotten is the work undertaken by other volunteers and supporters to raise money to ensure the branch can continue to care for cats in our area. Firstly, Bren and Jenny, for all the lovely items they make to sell, not only at our fund raising events, but also private commissions, Marian, who fosters for us at Briston for sales of plants at her home and Car Boot Sales, Barbara, who has organised store collections, Andrea and Barbara for raising money at the Cromer Carnival Charity event, Rebels Charity Bingo at Potter Heigham for proceeds from their event, Beverley for the lovely Dolls House room and for the sale of model caravans, plus Collection Boxes at Showcase Gallery in North Walsham and at Aylsham Cattery (which included the sale of special knitted mice). We thank you all for all that you do and also all of you who help throughout the year, either caring for the cats or helping with fund raising. Sadly, we also have to report the death of two long standing friends of the As many of you may already be aware there has recently been an outbreak of Canine Parvovirus in Norfolk.

Parvovirus first reared its head in the UK as an epidemic in the 1970s and resulted in the death of thousands of dogs during a short period of time. Since then vaccination has brought the disease under control and these days we fortunately only see isolated outbreaks from one year to the next. The virus most commonly affects unvaccinated young dogs causing potentially fatal immunosuppression, vomiting and diarrhoea. However, where there is a high enough viral burden or immunosuppressed animals it can cause disease in adult dogs, and this was the case in the recent outbreak.

So what can we do? The simple answer is to ensure we vaccinate our dogs sufficiently. It is thanks to vaccination that we have almost eradicated

branch. Ruth Kay, was for many years a regular at our fund-raising events, as well as being the Branch Treasurer when the branch was first set up. Jackie Williams, was until last year, one of our fosterers. They both made a valuable contribution to the work that we do and the cats have lost two very good friends.

Our Neutering Line has also been very busy and again, at the time of writing, we have issued 224 vouchers (71 of these in the last two months) for cats to be neutered. We have also helped with neutering several feral cats too. So many cats and kittens need our help because a cat has not been neutered so we are delighted and hope people will continue to call for this help.

Lola, lovely friendly cat, came in with kittens who have now been re-homed

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If you have experienced difficulty in contacting Stephanie by recently please be aware this has been out of our control as she has been without electricity for several hours on several days over the last few weeks.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the year and wish them a Very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. We are now on Facebook. Find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

many diseases such as Canine Distemper, but failure to continue to maintain vaccination status will inevitably lead to recurrence of some diseases. Parvovirus is a good example of one such disease because it can survive in the environment for years at a time. There has been a recent public trend towards avoiding vaccinations as some deem them as unnecessary. Although there is some truth behind the concept that some dogs maintain life-long immunity following their first 2 years annual vaccinations it is not the case for all dogs, which means missing vaccinations can leave some pets unprotected. There are also some diseases which all dogs require regular vaccinations for even if they are still immune to others. This is the reason behind annual boosters and why we always recommend that dogs are either blood tested to check their immune status or maintained with annual vaccinations. If you would like further information on blood testing or vaccination feel free to give us a call. Toby Morrell MRCVS . Westover Veterinary Centre

Christmas comes early for children of North Walsham!

On 1 December, the community of North Walsham were gifted a new play park funded by North Walsham Play in conjunction with North Walsham Town Council.

The £90,000 play park has been the fundraising project for North Walsham Play for the past 16 months. This is the second play park gifted to the people of North Walsham; the first being at Woodville just off Hadfield Road in the town.

Although the weather was overcast, this did not stop many families, organisations and groups gathering for the official ribbon cutting ceremony which took place at 2:30pm.

Founder and Trustee, Matthew Smith, welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. He added “North Walsham Play has had much success in the past two and half years and we are proud of our achievements. So many local groups and organisations have supported us since we founded in February 2016”.

Cllr Saul Penfold from North Norfolk District Council represented the district council’s Big Society Fund Panel which granted North Walsham Play a grant of £10502.00 towards the play park. Cllr Penfold complimented the committee and the community for getting behind the project and he added that he was proud to have been part of the parks official launch.

The official ribbon cutting was undertaken by Town Mayor and Trustee of North Walsham Play, Cllr Barry Hester. Cllr Hester wished to express specific thanks to Matthew Smith for all his hard work and support. North Walsham

Town Council were able to pledge £20,000 towards the new park.

Children and their families were able to be some of the first to enjoy all the new play park has to offer including wheelchair accessible roundabout, state of the art themed play units, a selection of different swings including a Tango swing allowing a baby and parent/older child to swing together, crows next and activity play panels. The park has been designed to promote inclusive and accessible play for all. Additional seating has also been added within the fenced park to allow families to spend quality time outside in the fresh air.

The play park has been installed with a state of the art safety surfacing running throughout, which enables the park to be accessible all year round even immediately after heavy rain.

All present were treated to sweets and badges and 14 children lucky enough to find stars hidden within the new park received a special goody bag full of treats. A festive hamper raffle was also held, with proceeds going towards the next project.

Matthew Smith, Trustee, added that he was proud of all that the community and the committee

had done to make this park become a reality. He added “There are far too many people, organisations and businesses to thank but we really couldn’t have done it without their support. We hope to go from strength to strength in the coming months and years”.

North Walsham Play is a registered charity on a mission to create inclusive play opportunities for all living within the town. The charity will now be focusing on two further projects within parks and open spaces across the town. If you are able to help them in anyway please do contact them via nwalshamplay@yahoo.co.uk or visit www.nwplay.co.uk The charities next fundraiser is a Variety Show at North Walsham Community Centre on Saturday 26 January 2019 – tickets are available now via the charities website and are only £10 each.

NNDC will hand out nearly £267,000 to Community Projects in Holt, North Walsham, Fakenham and Stalham

Funding for a wide range of projects designed to improve the economic vitality of North Norfolk’s four inland market towns has been approved. A meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet agreed to a set of recommendations today which had been put forward by the Market Towns Initiative working group.

Each town was able to bid for £100,000 to spend on projects enabling them to take part in the development of their economic future. The money comes from a total pot of £400,000.

Around £130,000 remains in the Market Towns Initiative fund and a second round of applications will be opened to access this money, with the closing date for these applications being 12 February.

12

The amount any one town can receive in total will remain at a maximum of £100,000 – so if a town received £50,000 in the first round, it would be able to bid for up to £50,000 in the second round.

The nine successful applicants are: • Fakenham Town Council - £24,341.67 for a regenerative project that would provide a facelift for rundown shop fronts and signage in the town centre. • Fakenham Town Council - £2,525 to design and print a heritage guide with a map and information about the town to be used by residents and visitors. • Active Fakenham - £33,550 to coordinate, resource and market a large number of events in the town centre. • The Holt Society - £7,210 to design and print a pamphlet and five notice boards to provide information on the Holt Owl Trail to residents and visitors.

increase visitors and trade. • Holt Town Council - £17,514 for projects including an accessible ‘Yellow Brick Route’, and a Holt Park and Ride scheme. • Regenerate North Walsham and North Walsham Town Council - £99,575 to implement three major improvement projects split between improving St Nicholas Court, the town centre and attracting more visitors to the town. • Stalham Town Council - £32,204.70 to improve the tourism offer of the town with an aim to attract more visitors by making improvements to the Staithe and its connection to the town centre via improvements to signage. • Stalham Area Business Forum - £22,171.25 to implement multiple regenerative projects in the town centre. Community groups were able to work together with North Norfolk District Council to put in the bids.

North Walsham Table Tennis It’s a knockout

The attention turned to the quarter-finals of the Knockout Doubles Cup with two ties taking place at North Walsham Sports Centre. Alpha’s Robert Gabriel, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner. Alpha won 6-0 with Wilson and Warner picking up a set in both of their appearances together while the dead rubber saw De Neve and Warner take Gabriel and Baldock-Yaxley to four. Alpha face a tough semi-final away against Gresham's School A. On the adjoining table, Beta’s Stuart Hook, Mark Blackburn and Phil Stone hosted Mundesley A’s Simon Halliday, Peter Betts and Paul Price. Blackburn and Stone led each set of the opener and squandered two set points at 10-8 in the second as Halliday and Price came through 11-7, 13-11, 13-11. Two wins in four followed by two in straight sealed Mundesley’s passage to the semifinal. There was some consolation for the hosts as Stone and Hook won a dead rubber in straight sets against Betts and Price.

Beta were the only remaining North Walsham team left in the Knockout Singles Cup and for their quarter-final they visited Shark's Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson. Stone had set point chances in both the third and fourth as he was

edged out by Patterson in the opener 7-11, 11-9, 12-10, 15-13. Hook recovered from a two sets deficit to beat Steve Hudson but Sharks came through 5-1 with three other battles going to four. The same two trios met in the Premier Division with maximums for Patterson and Matt Hudson while Steve Hudson picked up a single against Stone in four. In the doubles, Blackburn and Hook nearly recovered from two down, but Patterson and Matt Hudson hung on to win in five to complete an 8-2 win for Sharks.

There were plenty of other catch-up games going on to help the League get back on track and unusually at North Walsham Sports Centre in the Second Division, Foxtrots were able to put out two different teams to play two different matches on adjoining tables at the same time! The first saw Simon Porritt, Jim Crossley and Marcelli Gabriel host Swordfish Nigel Brady, Ray Amo and Andrew Robinson. For the hosts Crossley took a very good maximum and Gabriel picked up a single in three against Robinson. Brady took a brace beating Porritt in four and saved two set-points at 8-10 in the second as he beat Gabriel 11-9, 14-12, 11-5. Robinson picked up a single against Porritt in three while Amo's brace included a win in five against the Foxtrot player. Brady and Robinson won a vital doubles in three

The Vikings' good form has continued with two more victories.

First Southend were soundly beaten at Scottow 57-7, the hosts running in nine tries including a Jim Riley hat trick. Then came a much harder fixture in Chiswick against HAC where, in difficult conditions, they triumphed 29 -17 against a side with top three ambitions themselves. At the season's halfway point the Vikings were third on 54 points, three behind Colchester and eleven behind Rochford who have maximum points. HAC are fourth on 43.

The Raiders remain second in their League after defeating Wymondham 2nds, then losing 19-17 at leaders Beccles.

Captain and No 8 Will Hodgson (pictured) was November's Coltishall Red Lion Player of the Month. "Things are going really well and I'm enjoying being Captain," said Will. "We approach every game expecting to win and our away

against Porritt and Gabriel to seal a 6-4 win for Swordfish. Representing Foxtrots on the next table were Phil Mole, Joe English and Sarah Tudhope (playing up) as they hosted Mundesley D's Graham Masters, David Houlton and Tobias Leonard. A fantastic comeback in the opener saw Tudhope beat Masters from two down, edging the decider 17-15 and she also beat Houlton in straight. Leonard took a brace for Mundesley edging Tudhope 12-10 in the fifth and beating English in four.
