NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING NORTH WALSHAM TOWN COUNCIL have called a Public Meeting regarding the

NORTH NORFOLK LOCAL PLAN 2016-2036 to be held on

Rare bird draws crowds to canal

Continued from front cover... The bird, which has probably come from Scandanavia, is a rare visitor to Norfolk. The last confirmed county record is believed to be one seen on the River Thet in Thetford from early November 2012 until late March 2013. It was joined by a second bird towards the end of its stay. Local birding expert James Appleton is especially delighted at the dipper's arrival on the canal as it has family connections for him dating back more than 40 years.

Wednesday 23rd January 2019, 18.30 at the

Jubilee Rooms, Community Centre, New Rd, North Walsham NR28 9DE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------A Public Meeting to discuss any suggestions, issues and concerns that local residents have about the North Norfolk Local Plan 2016-2036. This is an opportunity to raise your views prior to the Public Consultation in February 2019. Representatives from North Norfolk District Council who are involved in the North Norfolk Local Plan 2016-2036 will be attending.

Barry Hester ʹ Town Mayor Any enquiries to: Town Clerk 18 Kings Arms Street, North Walsham NR28 9JX email: admin@northwalsham-town.co.uk All Local Residents are invited and all views welcome

Birders taken on the road bridge at Ebridge Mill. Photo: JO WAITE

His late father Claude spent much of his childhood living in a cottage at Ebridge Mill. In 1974, when the mill was still working, Claude, alerted by a mill worker, saw his first Ebridge black-bellied dipper and James, then aged eight, remembers watching it through a window.

Then, almost exactly 20 years ago, on January 1 1999, his father found another black-bellied dipper on Ebridge Mill Lock. "Just like the current bird, it would feed at Briggate as well as Ebridge Mill and stayed until late February/early March delighting 100s of birdwatchers," said James. "The canal is pretty much the habitat a wintering dipper requires - it’s certainly finding lots of food."

Britain has its own resident dippers, with chestnut underparts below a white bib, chiefly found west of a line drawn south along the Welsh border and north of the Peak District National Park in areas with clean, usually quite fast-flowing water, weirs and waterfalls. The black-bellied dipper is a subspecies and a rare visitor to the UK.

Jo Waite, who lives in an apartment in the now-converted Ebridge Mill, said that there had even been three birders in position before 8am on New Year's Day, anxious to spot the foreign visitor.

"We have a family of teal which spend the winter on the canal here. Also kingfisher, egret, dabchick, mallard, mute swan, coot and moorhen," she added.

"In addition we see water voles and otters. The range of wildlife to which we are treated is growing all the time. If you can take your eyes off the water and look up you may see buzzards, red kite and skeins of beautiful geese passing by."

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust runs one-hour return boat trips along the canal, from Ebridge Mill Pond to Spa Common, every Sunday at 2pm, £5 per passenger. To book ring: 07585 160772.

North Walsham Community Shop

North Walsham Community Shop opened its doors on 15 January 2018 and has rapidly become a fixture, both in the Market Place and in the life of the town. It’s grants have totalled an amazing £11,711 in the last 11 months and these have all been made possible by what the

Presentation to First Responders

team like to call the virtuous circle of giving. Residents give items and objects, its volunteer team give their time to sell these, and so raise funds that can be returned to the town in the form of grants. In addition several local businesses are sponsoring the shop, with regular cash donations.

This year has seen funding of 30 local groups, from £50 to help the Morsbag group who make and give away reusable bags, made from recycled fabric to the First Responders whose third team member for North Walsham was

made possible by a £1,000 grant for their equipment.

The shop, which is a registered charity, has clear aims, which are to fund groups and voluntary organisations within the parish of North Walsham, that help those who live in the town, or who help to improve the environment or life of the town. Applications for grants are welcomed either at the shop or via their website www.northwalshamcommunityshop.org.uk As well as raising funds for the North Walsham, the town acts as a hub for local groups too, with posters and information displayed inside, providing them space on its website as well as selling tickets for community events.

During the summer they were pleased to be a key hub for the town’s survey in support of the successful Market Town Initiative grant, with 448 people calling in to cast their votes.

The shop’s team are keen to help North Walsham’s young people and have provided work

experience for students. In response to concerns around littering, a competition was held for a recycling poster and they also published a young resident’s design for a tourist leaflet.

2018 has been a varied, interesting and very successful year for North Walsham Community Shop and they look forward to an even better 2019.

MP seeks meeting with Health Secretary for those Mr Lamb said “It was clear from the meeting that many people feel let down by NSFT seriously let down by mental health services in North Norfolk. Some

Following the Care Quality Commission’s damning report on the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust, Norman Lamb MP has asked the Secretary of State for Health to meet with people who feel let down by the Trust.

Mr Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, met with constituents in Sheringham on 30 November to discuss the lack of services for those with mental health needs, and what can be done to improve them.

Days earlier, the Care Quality Commission recommended that NSFT remain in special measures and renewed its rating of Inadequate overall from July 2017, also noting a deterioration on one measure. 6

who were there had lost loved ones through suicide.

“The CQC’s own assessment is damning, and what makes it worse is that it’s a continuation of the last inspection which also found the Trust to be inadequate, indicating that there has been a serious failure to improve services.

“The Health Secretary has signalled to me personally that he is taking a personal interest in the steps needed to address the CQC’s damning report. I hope he will therefore agree to meet with me and people whose lives have been affected by the failure of the mental health services. I would be keen for other MPs to attend as well." Norfolk's heritage needs help

A charity has a very unusual vacancy to fill – it needs a volunteer to oversee the restoration of one of only four canal locks in Norfolk.

Dozens of volunteers have spent 18 years revitalising the North Walsham and Dilham Canal, a unique part of Norfolk’s heritage, and today hundreds flock to what has become a new tourism attraction.

The growing success of the project has led to an ever-lengthening "to do" list and the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust now desperately needs more volunteers.

Most urgently they want people for two major tasks that will take the restoration forward significantly: someone to lead the reconstruction of the 1826 lock at Ebridge, and a “lengthsman” who would cherish the maintenance of the

*

water channel and canal banks from Ebridge to Bacton Wood.

"The first task would suit a retired construction engineer or similar, and the second a person able to manage and balance the needs of flora and fauna with those of navigation, walkers, anglers, boaters and ‘gongoozlers’ – canal watchers,” said Trust chairman Ivan Cane.

There are also roles for a work-party coordinator – which could be done from home by anyone with organisational skills – machinery operators, an events’ organiser and boat-trip crew. Work parties are currently raising the canal banks above the restored Bacton Wood Lock so that, after

some 80 years, water can be returned to Bacton Wood Mill. They are also back at Honing Staithe Cut, clearing it for public use, and have resumed clearance work at Briggate Mill Pond.

"One of the pleasures of volunteering on such a worthwhile project is that of meeting people who can now boat, fish, picnic or walk along the canal,” Ivan added.

“But, even more, to see the pleasure that the work-party members gain from working with others. Recently a 13 and 81 year old were removing some tree roots and after an hour of hard work, they succeeded. The older said of the younger ‘He’s a real grafter!’ There are not many places where such fantastic working relationships can occur.”

What a Challenge!

Pupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham took part in their annual Christmas Challenge Day.

This year the children separated into their house teams and had to create the best decorated Christmas tree. The challenge was to hand make all of the decorations and include a background scene as well, which had to reflect a particular theme.

The children had a fun filled day making ornaments that were so exceptional they would have taken pride of place in a department store window. Their creativeness included painted fox faces on circular wood, assorted pine cones decorated as owls and foxes, an array of salt dough ornaments of gingerbread men, stars and snowmen and papier mache Christmas puddings that looked good enough to eat!

All the children had put in a lot of time and effort into making their tree display amazing and were very proud of the finished creation. Visitors and parents to the school remarked how beautiful and creative they were and how it was nice seeing something the children had made rather than a tree traditionally decorated.

As always Millfield pupils rose to the challenge and are already looking forward to next year’s Challenge Day!

It is with great sadness that following the resignation of some Officers and Committee Members and our inability to find someone to take over these positions we have had to make the regrettable decision to put the group ‘on hold’. No meetings or fundraising will take place during 2019.

Mick Greenhalf will stay as Chairman and Jackie Greenhalf as Treasurer, in name only, just to keep the group open and with the hope that we can find some willing volunteers to take the group forward and carry on its good work but if no one is found by the end of 2019 then the group will officially close.

If you or anyone you know would like to take up this challenge please contact the Eastern Volunteering Team on 01376 501390 or email eastern@diabetes.org.uk

Churches Together annual Christmas day lunch

This year was our 23rd Christmas Day Lunch in North Walsham Community Centre. We welcomed anyone who would otherwise be on their own, at this very special time of the year.

We had a wonderful time, with lots of smiling faces and plenty of chatting, on what can be a very lonely day. Everyone tucked in to a traditional three course Christmas Lunch with a glass of wine.

Later we watched the Queen’s speech and were served a cup of tea with a delicious slice of cake. On leaving everyone was given a present of a box of chocolate biscuits. Cars were then ready to take home those with no transport.

Without the generosity of the North Walsham Community, this event would not be able to take place. We would like to thank The Bluebell Inn, The Classic Car Club and private donations, also Rotary in North Walsham who pledged to underwrite any losses.

We mustn’t forget to say ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers who helped make this day possible.

Steam Punk Sculptures

Having worked on my hobby for about a year making lamps, upcycling all sorts of broken and end of life items such as cameras, musical instruments, motor parts etc, I saw in a coffee shop in Norwich, Alchemista, a steam punk style coffee machine which I found fascinating. This type of sculpture goes a step further than upcycling unused items - it uses old parts many of which would probably be thrown away as scrap, producing humorous and interesting conversation and advertising pieces.

My first venture, a six foot tall coffee machine with a section that actually makes ice drip coffee, took quite a while to produce - lots of head scratching and changing around along the way - but the finished machine was very well received at the collectors’ fair at the Norfolk showground recently.

The machine is now on display at the new Shambles Bistro in North Walsham so please do take a look.

Normally steam punk sculptures are made on commission either for rental or purchase to suit a huge range of businesses - coffee, wine, brewery, tattoo , music, photography - the list of themes and sizes is endless.

I post all my sculptures and my upcycled lamps on Facebook under ‘Evolution Upcycled’ and many lamps are available from the Music Hut in town. Enquiries and comments are always welcome.

The decision was made at the first North Norfolk District Council Development Committee meeting of the New Year.

Cllr. Karen Ward, Portfolio Holder Planning & Housing said “The benefits to the environment in terms of energy savings are good news for North Norfolk residents. The Committee was reassured that all necessary measures had been taken to minimise the visual impact of this installation on the surrounding AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

As we leave 2018 high pressure will still be close enough to give us dry, benign conditions with temperatures not far from average.

Thereafter it won’t be long before we get more mobility into the mix which will mean wind, rain and more up and down with the temperatures.

However, there does not seem enough evidence to suggest there will be long spells of cold and there will still be fair days in the mix too.

February will continue in the same way and the same can be said for March except that there will be more in the way of fair days and temperatures should have the chance to rise above average as daylight hours move ahead at a pace. Ned Nimbus North Walsham 558 January 19th 2019

Facial rejuvenation on a BUDGET

Cost-effective special skin rejuvenation options from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Winter is the best time to start looking after our skin and to start the skin renewal and regeneration program. Here we are providing a selection of our treatment that can be carried out on a budget. There is something to suit every budget so hopefully you will find something that you like!

Simplest solution is to start with medical grade skin products. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on products such as moisturisers, sun protection and vitamin A, C or E-based skin creams. If you’re not sure what is best for you come and see our trained therapists who can devise a skincare program for you. Lunch-time gentle treatments We offer simple skin renewal treatments, which really are pleasant and enjoyable procedures such as light emitting diodes, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. A gentle vacuum sucks your skin while the diamonds gently abrade and polish it. Skin resurfacing can reduce the effects of aging on our skin. Skin resurfacing is a treatment that improves wrinkles, skin texture and colour by removing the topmost layer of skin leaving it more supple and vibrant. Skin resurfacing also stimulates the elastic tissue beneath the surface of the skin resulting in a healthier and firmer appearance. We are offering 3 for 2 on this very popular treatment for skin brightening, pigmentation or acne. A saving of £ 65 Laser skin toning Next step up are laser toning and brightening packages, which are again being offered on a discount. Laser Toning was designed to combat the effects of aging in a softer, gentler way. It uses a revolutionary process that delivers the laser energy through your skins surface, to gently stimulate the production of collagen while protecting the outer layer of your skin. The new collagen softens the appearance of aging skin. Unlike laser and chemical peels, Laser-Toning does not resurface the skin. It simply tightens your skin to diminish the appearance of wrinkles. You can now save £ 250 over a package of 5 sessions. Radiofrequency skin tightening If it is lifting of skin jowls and jawline that you’re after but do not want surgical treatment RF skin tightening may just be the treatment you’re looking for. Extensive surgical facelift is becoming a rarity. Thanks to modern technology, sun-protection and awareness, we find people are maintaining their youthful looks for longer. Patients love the treatments because they are comfortable without pain medication or numbing creams. With this technique, patients see some instant improvement with increased collagen regeneration and skin firmness that becomes visible over the next 3 to 4 months and continues for up to 12 months. It can tighten loose skin on any area of the body such as tummy and arms and can be used with ultrasound to reduce areas of localized fat that cannot be improved with diet or exercise. You can now try this for a generous 20% off the full price. You can book up to three sessions or try one. Dermal fillers If your heart is set on dermal fillers, but you do not have the budget to afford multiple syringes we have a very effective skin booster program for you. We recommend 3 sessions of treatment and you can save £ 150 over a course of 3 sessions.

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is your one stop shop for all your skin care needs. Voted best skincare clinic in Norfolk, we have something for everyone. From facials to surgical facelifts.

2019 probate court fee hike is taxation by the back door

by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Adam Smith, the founder of modern economic principles and the darling of many right of centre politicians, established the three essential duties of government. In his 1776 ‘The Wealth of Nations’ he stated these to be national defence, administration of justice (law and order) and the provision of public works and the public institutions that facilitate trade.

The government’s justification for the proposed hike in probate court fees is ‘access to justice’. They argue the need to raise funds for an effective court and tribunal service. They are expecting a group of vulnerable people (the bereaved) to pay to run the court system. In doing so they are failing in their fundamental duty, as second-stated above. In the UK we do not have ‘hypothecated taxation’; we have general taxation, national insurance and VAT. We should not be paying for public services out of fees paid by users of associated services and arguably, not by users of the service at all. For example, those of us that pay tax, support the NHS whether or not we use it. We pay for schools, whether or not we have children.

This is a tax-raid. There is no more work for the probate court in issuing a grant of probate

of a Will on a large estate than a small one. The system is exactly the same and there is no value-related element in the court’s work. 85% of estates are to be liable for the higher fees. At present a flat fee is paid of £155, for applications through a solicitor and £215 for applications without.

Under the new sliding scale, which is proposed from April 2019, one in five families can expect to pay £2,500 in probate court fees on estates of more than £500,000. Admittedly, for estates below £50,000, where increasingly no grant of probate is needed anyway, there will be no fee at all. The increased fee could even fall on a widow continuing to live in the marital home. Estates between £50,000 and £300,000 will remain little-altered at £250, while the maximum fee of an eye-watering £6,000 will fall on estates of over £2,000,000. It is wrong and ill-founded to expect the bereaved in England and Wales to pay the cost of upgrading the courts, when the bereaved in Scotland and Northern Ireland will not. I doubt that we would object if the proposed increase was in line with inflation or according to the Scottish or Northern

Irish scales.

Ministers backed-off the changes prior to the 2017 general election in the face of criticism but have back-tracked. It is small-comfort that the maximum fee has been cut from the 2017 proposed figure of £20,000 on estates of £2million and over. The Brexit-embattled government was not brave enough to announce the changes in the Budget; rather they will be enacted via secondary legislation.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several cats and kittens were reserved before Christmas and some have already left for their new homes. We have also had lots of enquiries since we re-opened and several more have been reserved or have already joined their new families. However, when a pen has become vacant it has quickly been filled by cats from our waiting list. If you are on the waiting list please remember that, if we have more than one cat from a household in a pen, we cannot take any more cats into that pen until the last one has been re-homed.

We often mention the importance of kittens born outside coming into care as soon as possible to ensure they learn at an early age to accept contact with people. Ideally, we like to have them in care before they are 6 weeks old, although we will take older kittens, especially if they have had some contact with the people who are feeding them. These kittens will need more socialising before we put them up for adoption as they have missed that vital stage in their development.

Sometimes they can be older than we would like when they come into care and these kittens do take longer to accept contact with us. Two such kittens are Nancy and Nimbus who joined us from the colony on the industrial site. They were older than most kittens and had very little contact with people. Although very frightened when they arrived, they did not spit, scratch or bite although they would hiss when anybody tried to get to close to them or touch them. When they joined us, they came to live in their carer’s home and initially reacted when she had visitors by running and hiding behind the settee in her conservatory. However, although still only happy to have physical contact with their carer, they no longer hide but will sit on the settee observing the comings and goings in her living room. These two young cats are beautiful but they will need a home/homes

Hedgehog Haven

The New Year has started off quietly with no more admissions.

The last one to arrive was on 23 December an underweight juvenile that I’ve named Tinsel.

As the weather is still mild (as at 6 January) there are still hedgehogs coming out at night seeking food. Hibernation is usually ruled by the weather. Until there are several nights of frosty cold weather they could still be about, so if you put food out for hedgehogs please carry on until it does not get eaten for several days in a row.

Breakfast meeting opportunity for Business Rate payers

The Grumpy Inn Keepers

The children from Worstead Pre-School put on their annual nativity play titled ‘The Grumpy Inn Keepers’.

Children as young as two years old, sang, acted, danced and portrayed the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of baby Jesus.

Presentation on North Norfolk District Council’s spending plans North Norfolk District Council is to give people who pay Business Rates the chance to discuss the council’s spending plans for the forthcoming financial year before they are finalised and submitted for approval.

Many of the children sang solos and this was all followed by a Christmas Fayre to raise money for extra resources.

A presentation at a breakfast meeting on Monday, 28 January, will be followed by an informal discussion with senior councillors and officers.

Cllr Eric Seward, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Revenue and Benefits, said “The meeting about plans for the forthcoming budget is an opportunity to find our more on the topic and get your views heard.”

Cllr Duncan Baker, NNDC Conservative spokesman for Finance, said “We would be delighted to hear views from our rate-payers, and I would encourage local business owners to attend so they can engage with us on our budget plans.”

Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “This is an opportunity for businesses to put forward their ideas for the forthcoming budget. The success of last year’s event proved very valuable. We want to continue to ensure that we work with local businesses, and identify your needs for the future.”

The meeting is open to any organisation, group or individual. Please email accountancy@north-norfolk.gov.uk to confirm attendance by 25 January or to request any further information.

The meeting, which will be held at NNDC's Cromer offices, will start at 8.30am.

If you would like to visit this friendly pre-school, please telephone Karla or Paula 01692 535692 (term time) or visit their website www.worsteadpreschool.co.uk

Crackdown on dog fouling is under way Rangers leading fresh effort to tackle anti-social dog owners

Environmental rangers are stepping up their patrols as part of an ongoing bid to tackle the blight of dog mess in North Norfolk.

Sheringham Prom will be one of the places that will see increased monitoring by the North Norfolk District Council rangers because of an increase in reports of the problem there.

“An increase in dog mess often happens when the clocks go back and the evenings get darker, but that is not an excuse,” said Cllr Nigel Lloyd, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Environment. “Dog mess impacts visitors and locals alike, and spoils everyone’s enjoyment of places such as the prom.”

It is an offence not to pick up after your dog. If this is witnessed by NNDC officers, offenders will be served with fixed-penalty notices of £80.

Dog fouling can be reported at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk. Keep up to date by following the council’s Environmental Protection Team on Twitter (@NNDCEPteam).

Local hairdresser’s new play to premier at Sheringham Little Theatre Local hairdresser, Nigel Manson, will be premiering his new play ‘Miss Marble strikes; Again!!’ at the Little Theatre, Sheringham on 8 and 9 March.

The comedy come farce will be presented by Stage Direct who have previously had successful shows at the Little Theatre, the Atrium in North Walsham and the Granary.

The group has enjoyed many years of experience of putting on performances at various prestigious venues in North Norfolk. In recent times they have produced ‘Good Morning Mr Magpie’ by David Starling

Pandora’s Box

For many years, Pandora’s Box Lay veiled from the eyes of men. Sadly, one day it resurfaced, they say, To bring Death and Despair, once again! Most people in the whole world today, Want to live together in Peace. But there are those whose wish to dispose Of Goodwill, and make Harmony cease They say only good men’s inaction, Will let evil and wickedness win. We all have to fight, despite shaking with fright, Bravery comes from within! The one thing we have to remember, To get rid of war, famine and pox, Good men must be willing to sacrifice all In the fight to close Pandora’s Box! Frances Wraight

and ‘The Village Hall’ by Ashley Burgoyne. Of course, more home grown plays are short listed and being planned in the near future. Stage Direct can boast of a host of playwrights, screen writers and published authors providing a constant stream of new material as and when needed. Nigel, a 54 year old former student of Sheringham High School, boasts that his family’s history in Sheringham dates back to the 1870s. He and his sister Sharon co-own Hair by Solo where they have practiced their hairdressing skills since 1984. He joined Stage Direct Drama group around 20 years ago and has been either a member of the cast or crew and has directed and produced in many of their productions. Nigel has written a number of plays and a pantomime, which was produced some years ago. Nigel will also be directing the play and says that

NEW

he was delighted when Stage Direct agreed to premier his new play. ‘Miss Marble strikes: Again!!’says Nigel ‘is a comic play, with some dark undertones, based around the comings and goings of a house at 26 Waverly Lane, Farnham. Farcical episodes from the owners of the house to secure rendezvous’ with their secret lovers do not go to plan. Their housekeeper Miss Marble is almost forced to go on strike, a non-English speaking Spanish lady is brought into the fray and is held captive under the stairs, until finally the dark undercurrents lead up to the play coming to a rather unique conclusion!’ Apart from long term members, there will be a new very talented younger member joining the production. Anna Ryan (as Meg) will be making her Stage Direct debut.

Performance dates are 8 and 9 March and tickets are available from the box office 01263 822347 or www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Tee-time is a family affair at Mundesley Golf Club

A Norfolk coastal golf club will have a husband and wife team of captains at the helm this year. David and Diana Clarke become club and ladies’ captains at Mundesley on New Year’s Day – hitting a ceremonial drive before a social ‘scramble’ event.

science researcher, was the first to take up the sport in 2004. He now plays off a low four handicap and has represented Norfolk.

And daughter Hannah, a 25-yearold paralegal, has just taken up the game. She also does occasional shifts working in the clubhouse bar.

It means a busy 2019 for the pair from Felmingham near North Walsham – organising matches and teams, and representing the club.

David and Diana are one of only a handful of husbands and wives to be captains in the same year since the club it was founded in 1901.

Ten Year Contract for Management of North Norfolk Leisure Facilities Announced

The announcement comes after a thorough procurement process for the Council’s leisure contract, which was advertised to potential contractors in April 2018.

The decision to award the contract was made at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet on 3 December, where the successful applicant was named as ‘Bidder X’ due to confidentiality rules. The name of that successful bidder was announced as Everyone Active following a standard 10-day ‘standstill’ period.

The ten-year leisure management contract will see Everyone Active responsible for the management of the following facilities: • The Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham • The Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre • The Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre in Sheringham • The dual use sports centre at North Walsham High School • The dual use sports centre at Stalham Academy • The dual use sports centre at Cromer Academy

The average annual saving over the life of the contract is in excess of ÂŁ300,000 and this reduction is helping to finance the provision of the new Sheringham Leisure

The Council thanked the existing contractors Places For People for all they have done for more than 20 years, where an excellent reputation has been developed for delivering high quality public leisure facilities.

All staff at the six facilities will be transferred over to the new contract under TUPE Regulations, which preserve employees' terms and conditions when a business is transferred to a new employer. This means staff currently employed at the six centres, either by the current contract holder or North Norfolk District Council, will continue to be employed but by the new contractor.

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis The League was shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of former North Walsham Captain Chris Johnson who passed away following a battle with pneumonia and having suffered a stroke shortly before Christmas. League Chairman Chris Pooley paid tribute saying “I was very sad to hear of the death of Chris Johnson. I had known him firstly as a player at the old North Walsham Youth Club, then at the Sports Centre for approximately forty years. During this time he was our League Tournament Officer with his wife Pat's assistance for twenty-five years, only standing down at the last AGM. The League expanded and Chris's job became more difficult with the large increase in players so entrants had to be restricted to five events. Again he dealt with this very capably and efficiently. When Mary Sawyer set up the Junior Coaching Scheme on Friday evenings he assisted with this and many of the young players joined the North Walsham Sports Centre Teams and continue to do so. The Junior Tournament was also instigated by him for registered and new non League players. This again was a great success and continues. He will

be remembered for many years for being a stalwart of the League, ever willing to assist and help the League forward. I will also remember his spring time phone calls to see how my onion sets were progressing!” League President Peter Ward also paid tribute saying “I first met Chris when I started playing table tennis in the League nearly forty years ago. Always enjoying the game he was a tenacious competitor with a devastating forehand. Apart from playing, Chris has been part of the backbone of our League, prepared to run the teams he played in and, as our Chairman has mentioned, served the League where needed, especially in running our annual tournament at North Walsham with his wife Pat for a quarter of a century. I often swapped gardening anecdotes with Chris over the years as this was a shared interest. Chris was a friendly unassuming man who will be missed by all who knew him within our League.” Life President and fellow North Walsham player John Vaughan added to the tributes “Chris was a kind, thoughtful man, a giver and a contributor in life, who always gave of his best, and got the best out of his colleagues. He was a stalwart

The Vikings' outstanding season has continued with wins against Diss, 67-0, at home, and 30 -12 away to Sudbury.

Before the Ruislip game on the 12th they were third in London One North, three points behind Colchester whom they play away this Saturday (19th), and 11 behind Rochford. The League's winner is promoted to South East Premier along with London One South's winner, with the runners up from each playing off for a third promotion place.

Twenty year Joe Milligan was December's Coltishall Red Lion Player of the Month. The centre only joined in October but has already established himself as a firm crowd favourite, scoring eleven tries. From Attleborough, Joe began playing rugby in the Minis at Wymondham aged six. Educated at Langley School he was in the Leicester Tigers Academy for two years and is now a UEA student.

when it came to Table Tennis, and the North Walsham Club and the North Norfolk Table Tennis League will be that much poorer without him.” Press Officer Philip Stone said “I was fortunate enough to play as a member of Chris's team for around fifteen very happy years and he was always extremely encouraging and helpful, but not only that, he was very easy to talk to in general and interested and supportive in whatever was going on in your own life. In addition he helped co-organise the twelve-hour table tennis marathons which helped support the Sport Relief charity on four occasions and these events simply would not have taken place without his invaluable support. The North Walsham club and the annual Championships owe a huge debt to Chris and I know that his spirit will live on both at the tournament and anytime anyone picks up a bat on a Friday night practice session at the Sports Centre”.
