Hospital unveils day room makeover and says ‘that’s what Friends are for’ A £22,000 facelift has turned a community hospital day room into a welcoming space where patients and visitors can relax and reminisce.

The project at North Walsham War Memorial Hospital was paid for by its League of Friends, which channels public funding donations into ‘extras’ to benefit patients, families and staff.

NNDC raises over £3,600 for local charities Dress Down days prove to be a hit with staff

Over the course of 2018, staff working at North Norfolk District Council have raised over £3,600 for local charities. NNDC have held Dress Down days, where employees have been encouraged to make donations to a number of good causes in return for wearing their casual clothes to work. On the days the staff have taken part in fundraising for their chosen charities, additional money has been raised through raffles and bake sales.

The charities were nominated by members of staff or elected members, and those that have benefitted in 2018 were Little Angels Playgroup in Fakenham, Nelson’s Journey, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Team Rubicon – Disaster Recovery, Open Youth Trust, the Scouts, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Migraine Trust, Parkinson’s UK, Children in Need, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Break, The Purfleet Trust and Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children.

NNDC has been running these successful Dress Down days for several years and will continue to do so in 2019.

Street Collection for Prostate Cancer

Hospital unveils day room makeover and says ‘that’s what Friends are for’

Continued from front cover... The day room has been renamed the Friendship Room in recognition of the Friends’ work and to reflect its use as space where patients and visitors can relax and chat away from Guests celebrate the opening of the Friendship the wards. Room at North Walsham War Memorial Hospital It was officially opened by MP Norman Lamb who said it showed the value of the Friends’ work, and the strength of community support for the hospital.

The hospital, which also has social care and clinics such as physiotherapy, fitted the new long term NHS vision to deliver more care closer to people’s homes he added.

One wall of the refurbished Friendship Room has been transformed with a giant mural of a sun-dappled woodland, and another adorned with archive pictures of the hospital and town as a conversation piece for patients.

Friends chairman Keith Jarvis said the group was formed in 1949, two years after the NHS and had a proud history of supporting the local hospital - from providing a new training room to Christmas gifts for patients.

The day room project also includes a new television, blinds, flooring and furniture. It is also planned to renew furniture in the garden patio area outside the day room, for people to enjoy in good weather.

Among the guests at opening was town mayor Barry Hester who has made the Friends his civic charity of the year and has so far raised £2850.

The hospital is run by the Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust whose chief executive Josie Spencer added: “We are lucky to have people like the Friends who are willing to work on local initiatives like this - which can be projects we cannot afford, or would take longer to achieve without their help.”

The Friends are keen to recruit new members to help them in their work.

Let’s Build a Kiln

About 40 people were at our latest talk, Let’s Build a Kiln, outlining the success of building and firing a Roman-style kiln. This was followed by an auction of some of the pots fired in the kiln and raised a massive £512. Thank you to everyone involved, a great success all round and a super boost to our funds. Mundesley Library Friends Talk – How local man David Greer defied the odds to realise his ambition On Friday 1 February Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) held the second in their current programme of Library Talks.

Over 30 people braved the ice and cold weather to be rewarded by a fascinating talk from local couple, David and Marie Greer.

Marie told how David had been struck down with a serious brain injury and how they recovered from this setback – even to the extent that David was able to apply to help crew one of the boats in the Clipper 2017/18 Round the World Yacht race. She also gave a brief insight into how she dealt with him being away for 11 months.

David’s application was successful and he enthralled his audience with tales of setting sail from Liverpool and the journey with stops in

Uruguay, Australia, China and the United States amongst other locations. Using slides taken during his voyage he told of high points – winning one of the race stages and, at one stage overtaking the boat crewed by Sir Robin KnoxJohnston – and the low points including having his boat damaged by a whale and the unfortunate death of one of the competitors on another boat. David also gave a fascinating view of the duties and day to day life on board.

After the talk the couple answered numerous questions from their interested audience.

The event raised funds for Headway (David and Marie’s chosen charity) and for Mundesley

Library.

Encouraged by the success of their first two talks MLF will host another on Friday 1 March at 5pm when Duncan Morris will present “A Policeman’s Lot – A Happy One”. Duncan’s entertaining and very humorous talk on true stories from his life in the Metropolitan Police and, latterly, back in Norfolk. Tickets cost £3 including refreshments and booking is advised as places are limited. To reserve your place please call Mundesley Library on 01263 720702

JD Wetherspoons Plans for North Walsham – NNDC update Following recent questions and speculation about the status of the proposed plan for a JD Wetherspoon to be developed in North Walsham, North Norfolk District Council feels it would be useful to the community to issue a statement, which sets out the Council’s current position. JD Wetherspoon approached the District Council in 2014 requesting an unencumbered freehold sale on the New Road site, meaning all occupants would need to move out.

This would then allow the company to develop a pub/restaurant on the site, which the District Council believed would strengthen the town centre through generating additional footfall and visitors. These moves were successfully facilitated by the District Council and by September 2016 the building was empty of occupants and subsequently secured.

A contract for JD Wetherspoon to pursue the purchase of the site was agreed in 2016.

The District Council therefore waits for JD Wetherspoon to confirm its intentions for the property.

Cllr Eric Seward, deputy leader of North Norfolk District Council and ward member for North Walsham (North), said: “This is a run-down prime town centre site. It is over four years since JD Wetherspoon first expressed an interest in coming to North Walsham. “The District Council has done its best to accommodate JD Wetherspoon. However, in the last few weeks there have been conflicting messages from the company over whether they wish to open new pubs in Norfolk. “The company chairman says no new pubs will be opened in Norfolk, but other company representatives give an opposite message.

“This saga has to come to an end. Are JD Wetherspoon going to open a new pub in North Walsham or are they no longer interested?”

A right of way/footpath challenge was raised in 2017 and resolved, meaning this challenge is no longer a legal impediment to the sale of the site pending development. In fact the Council believes there are no legal impediments whatsoever to progressing with the sale of the site, or any other impediments for JD Wetherspoon to submit or discuss with planners detailed plans of their proposals – which has not been the case to date. The Council has done everything in its power to make the site available to JD Wetherspoon in good order and in a timely fashion.

The Council wants to ensure a certain, economically viable future for the site to the benefit of North Walsham. Any next steps must be in the interests of the council taxpayers of North Norfolk and give confidence to all parties of a successful outcome for the town of North Walsham and its local communities.

Special North Walsham Churches Together Historic Event

A significant and indeed historic event took place during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at North Walsham on Sunday 20 January.

In a united service at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, a packed congregation from all nine members of North Walsham Churches Together met for worship in a special covenant service.

This was the first time that all nine churches have met together in this way, and all nine took part in the service in various ways.

The climax of the afternoon was the signing of a covenant of unity and mutual support signed and supported by all the churches.

Those involved included Methodist Church, St. Nicholas C of E, Sacred Heart RC, Congregational Church, Worstead Baptist, Swanton Abbott Chapel, Society of Friends, Salvation Army and New Life church.

'We may worship in slightly different ways, but we are all one, and want to make it clear to our local community that this is the case. In our diversity there is a rich unity flowing through' said Major Richard Durrant, Chair of Churches Together North Walsham who added that this was a truly uplifting and positive service.

He added 'We pray that this will be the start of us moving forward to reach out more effectively to our local community as the Church should indeed do'

a world-renowned soprano…. at least she was. She suddenly stopped singing and no one knows why. When she arrives at a home for retired performers, she finds that not only is her ex-husband there, but two other opera singers with whom she has sung in the past. The four opera singers are pressured to sing a quartet from Verdi’s Rigoletto, which they sang together in the past, in a concert to raise money for their retirement home, but Jean absolutely refuses. Will they persuade her to sing? Will Madeline have to learn to sing opera? All will be revealed in this humorous but poignant play.

Granville’s Sky Dive ‘Thank you’

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Myself and Rachael my sister, Simon my nephew and Becca my niece decided to do a sky dive to raise money to replace a window in the Congregational Church on Cromer Road.

My (our) dad (grandad) passed away last August and it was always his desire to see one of the coloured windows replaced in the church which he attended each week. However he never saw this happen so we all decided to do this in his memory and on 18 November last year at Beccles airfield it was done!

It was a fantastic experience for us all to drop out of an aircraft at 13,000 feet, free fall for 8-9,000 feet and then float down for 4,000 feet with beautiful views around us.

With very kind donations from the public and many North Walsham business people we raised just over £2,000 and work will soon be underway to complete the replacement.

Break-up without breaking down

by Rob Colwell, Director and Head of Family Services, Hayes + Storr

The frequency of separations at this time of year are well documented – family lawyers are inundated with new enquires between New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Getting a divorce can have a major impact on your mental health, and an acrimonious or one sided break-up can result in serious consequences. Some will seek retribution, others won’t accept it, and some will find it difficult to imagine a future without their spouse.

Being mindful of a client’s mental well-being whilst ensuring we achieve the best possible results can be a careful balancing act. Our aim is to deliver an outcome which causes the least amount of distress in what is already a traumatic situation. The end of a relationship can be devastating, and no matter who ended it or when, life can feel empty and frightening – but life does continue and many people go on to live happy, fulfilled lives after divorce. That’s why we keep our clients focused on the future, encouraging them to avoid negative emotions and think practically about the potential outcomes.

The lawyers in the Family Services department at Hayes + Storr are members of Resolution, a national organisation of family lawyers

committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems. Our team is guided by Resolution’s conciliatory and person-centred approach, including:

• Helping clients focus on what’s important in the long-term

• Balancing financial and emotional costs with what the client wants to achieve • Working with others to find the right approach and the best solutions

• Managing stress in what can sometimes be a very stressful situation

Not only does this practical approach facilitate our clients’ ability to cope, it also ensures costs are kept as low as possible, avoiding entrenched arguments that have no resolve. Our goal is to help clients adapt to their new situation and look for alternative solutions to court proceedings, avoiding unnecessary stress, costs and delays.

If you’re concerned about yourself or anyone else going through divorce or separation, we recommend visiting the Relate website at www.relate.org.uk for lots of helpful resources,

and don’t forget you can call the Samaritans free of charge at any time on 116123. They offer 24/7 support every single day of the year and you don’t have to be suicidal to get in touch. You can also get a referral from your GP for free counselling sessions on the NHS. A break-up can be hard to manage, so speaking with health professionals to develop coping strategies can be very helpful.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Every January we have to send information to Cats Protection Head Office relating to the work that the branch has undertaken during the previous year. Seeing the information in black and white underlines how important it is to follow the guidelines we are given to ensure the cats have the best quality of care while with us and that we have done everything we can to make sure they are ready for their lives with new families.

When the cats first arrive in care they go to one of our vets to have a health check. At this stage they will receive their first vaccination which includes cover for the Leukaemia Virus and be micro-chipped, unless this has already been done. If they have not been neutered, arrangements will be made for this to be done at this stage. During the year 82 cats and kittens, either while in our care or after they were re-homed, were neutered, 123 cats were vaccinated and 118 micro-chipped at branch expense.

We will also blood test the cat for FIV/FELV if its previous history is unknown or if it is an unneutered female with kittens. Some of the cats from a multi cat household will also be tested when they come into care and we will also test some of the cats from feral colonies plus any stray cat not in good health to ensure that they are all healthy too and not likely to spread these two very nasty viruses. We had 38 cats in care plus 6 feral/stray cats tested. One cat in care tested positive to FIV and is still waiting for someone to offer him a home and one very poorly stray tested positive to FELV and was put to sleep.

As well as the cats neutered in care and under our neutering campaign, we also paid for 56 feral cats to be neutered, 4 of which were relocated to new sites in barns and stables. Cats that are not used to too much contact with people are happiest left in their normal environment, although we have on occasion discovered a cat in a colony to be a

cat that has in the past lived in a home. This can usually be identified by its behaviour when taken to the vets to be neutered.

Several cats have needed dentals this year and in total 30 have needed veterinary Jacko, last of the lovely young cats treatment for various from the multi cat household reasons (23 of which were in care). Sadly, one little kitten had to be euthanized due to major health problems. No other cat or kitten has died in care. We are proud that, by following Cats Protection guidelines and not allowing the cats to mix, we have been able to isolate any infections, thus keeping these to a minimum.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Hal is the latest new arrival. He was being overwintered elsewhere, but has come into care as he had stopped eating and was losing weight.

He has been with me for 10 days and has had a course of antibiotics. His weight has now stabilised and at 600 grams is about hibernation weight, so I feel some of the problem is that his body is telling him it’s time to have a sleep.

Canal Trust gets the Sack - 500 times!

A delivery of 500 hessian sacks – enough to keep Santa happy for several decades - is helping maintain part of Norfolk’s heritage, and allowing the public to enjoy the results.

Once filled with earth, the bags are being used to bolster the banks of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal so that the public can stroll beside the 19th century waterway and enjoy the views and wildlife.

They were paid for with a £500 donation to the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust from the Worstead Festival.

Trust chairman Ivan Cane said they were grateful for the grant. “Bank maintenance on any canal is essential and these bags are being used to build up the sides of the banks above Ebridge Lock, which then provide ‘walls’ for an infill of de-silted material from the canal,” he added. “This, in turn, prevents the canal overtopping in times of heavy rain enabling walkers and others to keep drier feet when rambling along the canal side walks.” The trust welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities to help bring Norfolk's only sailing canal with locks back into use. Its next major project is to restore Ebridge Lock. For more information contact secretary@nwdct.org

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

The Community Centre opened its doors for North Norfolk Social entre for the Blind on 7 February. The entertainment once again was great - Mr Barry comes regularly every year and sings a medley of songs from the 50s & 60s. There was a special treat this time because he raised funds for the Club at a special Tea Dance he arranged and our Chairperson was handed a cheque for £100.

Youth Survey

A group of North Walsham’s youth have volunteered to carry out a survey to find out what facilities or projects the town’s younger residents would like to see.

This builds on the success of the recent survey in support of the Market Town Initiative grant, and like that one will support the next phase of detailed plans, proposals, further consultations and to support funding applications to make North Walsham a better place for youth.

The group has the support of North Walsham Play, Regenerate North Walsham Community Interest Company and North Walsham Community Shop, each of which have committed to work with the group to help deliver any projects they identify.

The simple survey will be carried out during February by using tablets carried by volunteers who will visit the High School and Paston College, and other locations too. The survey can also be completed at Disc n Dat, opposite Subway.

Our raffle raised £34. What a great start to the fundraising this year. Our meeting on Thursday 7 March will be our AGM and we are hoping that old members who read the North Walsham Times may come along to the Centre and see what we have got organised for this coming year. We are also looking for new members all the time so if you are blind or have sight problems then do try to give us a visit.

Party Leader Calls for Final Public Vote on Brexit

“Leaving the EU we will be worse off, and without valuable freedoms and partners in an increasingly dangerous world” Lib Dem Leader Sir Vince Cable warned a packed public meeting in North Walsham on the 31st of January. “’No deal’ is unworkable with unenforceable WTO rules. Theresa May’s Deal would leave us with two more years of highly unsatisfactory dithering while her deal is negotiated. This is why the Lib Dems are calling for a final vote on Brexit, with the option to remain in Europe.”

They agreed the way forward involved finding places to compromise, and cross-party working for consensus. “We have some responsibility to Sir Vince Cable MP, Leader manage these of the Liberal Democrats, differences and speaking in North Walsham engage in a civilized on the Brexit crisis 31/1/19 way” said Cable, applauding Norman’s The party leader was speaking about “very useful style of listening and seeking the Brexit crisis alongside North Norfolk MP compromise”. The meeting was held during a visit to North Norfolk by the Lib Dem leader with his wife Rachel. Earlier they attended a rally for party members and supporters at Paston College, North Walsham, launching the May 2nd local election campaign, an event observed by A Level politics students at the college.

“Vince Cable was really inspiring”, commented 17-year-old Paston student Nathan Wallace. “He’s a staple of British politics, and having him come into our community and engage with us is fantastic. I’d like to get involved with politics myself.”

Conservatives select North Norfolk parliamentary candidate Duncan Baker has been selected as the Conservative candidate for North Norfolk for the next general election.

Duncan, who is a director at a CT Baker, which employs more Duncan Baker with members of North Norfolk than 200 people in the Conservative Association Keith Simpson MP area, was selected by members of the North Norfolk Conservative Association this evening (Friday, February 1). He is a current North Norfolk district and town councillor and is aiming to

become the first Conservative MP for North Norfolk since 2001.

His campaign will focus on supporting economic growth and career opportunities in North Norfolk, delivering affordable homes and improving education and adult social care services. “I am delighted to be selected as the Conservative candidate for North Norfolk,” Duncan said.

“I have the grounding in local politics and am ready to beat the Liberal Democrats and cement this seat as a Conservative stronghold for many years.

“Only the Conservatives can build a country that works for everyone with a stronger, fairer economy and a more compassionate society.” Note from the editor: The views expressed in this article belong to the writer, and are not endorsed by the proprietors at Rose Villa Publications.

Group of Norfolk and Suffolk MPs call upon NHS Improvement and other key NHS organisations to publish plan for failing mental health Trust.

Following a briefing meeting for MPs which took place last month, a cross-party group of Norfolk and Suffolk MPs have asked NHS Improvement and other key organisations involved in the future of the Trust to provide guidance as to their plans.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is the worst performing mental health trust in England. The Trust, which was placed into special measures in October 2017, was rated in November by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as ‘inadequate’ for the third time. The CQC’s report highlighted the failings of the mental health services, reporting cases of patients who while waiting for treatment had taken their own

actions for the Trust to take, some dating back to 2014. Since the publication of the report, there have been reports of plans to split up the Trust, with others arguing that it should continue, but no clarity about the way forward.

A group of Norfolk and Suffolk MPs have now come together to ask for reassurance to be given to those who rely on mental health services in the region, and their families. The MPs’ letter calls out the ‘unacceptable drift’ surrounding the management of the Trust’s circumstances, and demands the publication of a plan by no later than 20th February.

Norman Lamb MP said ‘The lack of information regarding plans for Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has gone on for far too long. It’s difficult to understate how concerning this is for

North Walsham Times 560 February 16th 2019

inadequate for a third time. The fact that the performance of the Trust has deteriorated since it went into special measures in 2017 brings into question the effectiveness of NHSI as a regulator. How have they allowed this to happen?

Clearly, urgent action is needed. That’s why I’m working with a group of Norfolk and Suffolk MPs from different parties to demand a plan. We may have a range of views about what should happen to the Trust, but what’s important is that we’ve come together from the local area and all agree that NHS Improvement, and the other key organisations involved, have had enough time to figure out what steps to take.

Providing certainty for all those people who are worried about the Trust is the least that can be done at this stage.’

New opportunities for therapeutic riding in North Norfolk

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is pleased to announce the setting up of two new RDA Groups covering the wider North Norfolk Area.

At RDA, our horses and ponies provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK. Our network of 500 volunteer groups organise activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting and show jumping to over 25,000 people each year. Now riders in the North Norfolk area will have the opportunity to choose between two newly created groups.

Norfolk Coast RDA is based at North Norfolk Riding Centre, Walsingham and Worstead and District RDA rides at Squirrelwood Equestrian Centre, Hall Farm, Worstead.

Peter Tobitt, Norfolk County Chairman for RDA commented “It is so exciting to see the expansion of riding opportunities in this geographical area. The two new Groups are run by trustee boards and volunteers with a wealth of experience who are looking to expand the possibilities for their riders. I am confident that each Group is now ideally placed to achieve this and help even more riders achieve their goals.”

NEW

Previously the whole area was served by one group, North Norfolk RDA, which operated very successfully for 43 years from a number of riding stables, most recently Squirrelwood at Weybourne. Adult and child riders came from various special needs schools and care facilities as well as on a private basis.

Now the same trustees and experienced volunteers who ran North Norfolk RDA have taken the positive step to turn one group into two – enabling them to support a much wider area. Existing riders have already been accommodated at the new groups, which are also seeking new riders.

Each RDA Group is entirely staffed by unpaid volunteers and they hope to recruit more volunteers to help with this very rewarding equine therapy which benefits the riders so much in so many ways.

For further information about riding or volunteering with either of these groups, please contact either Worstead & District RDA Priscilla McDougall norfolkworsteadrda@gmail.com 01263 577247 or Norfolk Coast RDA Amanda Brownlow norfolkcoastrda@gmail.com 01263 740446

Cromer Carnival set to celebrate 50th year – what are your memories? As one of the biggest carnivals in the country, organisers would like to hear from you about your memories of this iconic event. Over the past 50 years the carnival has been entertaining thousands of visitors and locals alike with a year-round programme of events, centring around Carnival Week in August.

Across the decades the events of carnival week have constantly changed but the spirit of the carnival has remained the same – one of fun, family and celebration.

Now, organisers are planning to put together a booklet and website to look back on the past 50 years of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation (CVEO) – the organisation behind Cromer Carnival. They would like you to share your memories, photos and highlights of the carnival with them.

Were you a winner of one of the carnival events, a former Miss Cromer, a committee member, an organiser of an event, a volunteer or display act at a previous carnival? Why does Cromer carnival hold a special memory for you?

Cromer Carnival 1980 – Children’s fancy dress on the promenade

Tony Shipp, Chairman of the Carnival, who will this year celebrate his 35th year at the helm, said “As part of our celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of the C.V.E.O. we are planning to put together a booklet of photographs, memories, highlights and the history of Cromer Carnival.

“I am sure many of you, who have been involved at some time over the past 50 years, have photographs and memories that could be part of that publication. It would be great if you could search these out or write them down and email them to us so we can hear what Cromer Carnival has meant to you. Please take time to search through your photographs and write down your memories and highlights they could be more recently, or 50 years ago. It need be only a sentence or two. Let’s see if we can make it a publication that you have contributed to and all supporters of Cromer Carnival will want to own. We will also be putting all the memories and photos submitted onto a new website which we hope will grow throughout the year. Cromer Carnival 1980 –

It’s a Knockout on the Carnival field To submit your memories by email please email cromercarnival50 @gmail.com. Alternatively you can call Tony Shipp on 01263 512591.

Tony Shipp – Cromer Carnival Chairman 1984

There will also be a drop-in morning for people to bring in memories and photos to share with the carnival. This will take place at Merchants Place, Cromer on Saturday 16th February from 10am to 2pm. All photos and memories brought in on the day will be copied so they can be used in the booklet or on the website.

This year Cromer Carnival week will be held between Saturday 17 August and Friday 23 August, with Carnival Day being held on Wednesday 21 August.

Many of the Carnival favourites return this year with the Bonny Baby Competition, Knobbly Knees Contest, Glamorous Grandmother Competition, Decorated Beach Hut Competition, Waiter and Waitresses Race and the fabulous Family Fun Day.

There will also be a number of special events throughout the year to celebrate the 50th year and the committee will be bringing back events which were popular in the past.

The Carnival will host a Midsummer Charity Ball in aid of EACH, on Saturday 22 June at Northrepps Cottage. Tickets are on sale at ÂŁ45 per person and can be obtained from, the Gift Shop on the corner of Garden Street and Church Street, Cromer or via Diane Burdett on 01263 511981. The Carnival which is run by a team of volunteers would like to thank the many helpers, sponsors and supporters who make the Carnival possible.

North Walsham Table Tennis Handicap cups get underway

The focus shifted to the start of the Handicap Competitions with the first round of the Doubles Cup. The system being used is the same as last year with each player starting on their allocated handicap and battling it out over one single set to 61 points, however this year the very top players in the League have been given negative handicaps to try and make it a fairer competition.

A derby at North Walsham Sports Centre saw Alpha's Andy Beane (10), Tom BaldockYaxley (5) and Robert Gabriel (10) take on Cobra's Ben Lester (35), Andrew Weston (38) and Richard Porritt (36) with the handicaps giving Cobras roughly a 25 point advantage. It was a close match throughout with Beane and Baldock-Yaxley beating Lester and Weston on the golden point. Alpha won 5-2 with the duo of Weston and Porritt taking both points for Cobras. Elsewhere in the first round, North

Walsham Foxtrots won 6-3 away to ASTA.

In the first round of the Handicap Singles Cup North Walsham Delta's Sarah Tudhope (42), Tony Bispham (43) and Gudi Scham (40) hosted Aylsham Norada's John Hall (42), Sally Homfray-Davies (47) and Tom Mountain (42). The handicaps started close and most of the contests finished that way too as maximums from Hall and Mountain saw Norada win 7-2. North Walsham Foxtrot's Joe English (55), Jim Crossley (43) and Simon Porritt (45) hosted Crosscourt's Rod Goffin (30), Eric Dolden (36) and Wren Thatcher (45). English won the opener 61-36 against Goffin before Crossley beat Dolden 61-58. Porritt and Thatcher started level at 45 each with the Foxtrot winning 61-59. 61-50 wins for both Crossley and English against Goffin and Thatcher respectively saw Foxtrots take an unassailable 5-0 lead which became 7-2 after the dead

Following the disappointment of the defeat at Colchester, the Vikings showed their resilience the next week by travelling to Perivale with a squad showing five changes and coming home with a 17 -13 win over mid table Old Priorians. Despite abundant possession they found themselves 13 -10 down heading into the final quarter but got their noses in front with seven minutes left, Matt Hodgson converting a Chris Godwin try from the touchline, meaning the hosts had to score a try for victory. Priorians then pounded away in the Vikings' twenty two but the visitors held out.

If you are new to Fit Together, please arrive 20 mins early. For more information contact Melanie Brown on 07766 259999. Monday 18 February – 10:30am - Mundesley to Paston Walk – Grade 3 – Approx. 3.5 miles – A walk with gentle inclines and steep declines with breath taking views of the coast on tracks, minor roads, cross field and cliff paths. Meet at the Royal Hotel CP, 30 Paston Rd, Mundesley, NR11 8BN. If you would like lunch after the walk then please call ahead of time on 01263 720096. Friday 22 February– 10:30am - Swanton Hill

In the Premier Division, North Walsham Alpha's Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Richard Westgate hosted Shark's Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson. After a hesitant start, Patterson's backhands were on fire in the opener as he edged past Beane 15-13 in the fourth. Steve Hudson's defensive game overcame the hitting of Westgate 11-8, 15-13, 5-11, 11-13, 11-6. A four set win for Patterson against BaldockYaxley saw Sharks lead the match 3-1 but Alpha then won all the remaining games to take the match 7-3. After losing the opening two sets against Steve Hudson both 10-12, Baldock-Yaxley recovered to win in five while, Beane beat Matt Hudson 14-12 in the fourth and Westgate denied Patterson a maximum in straight.

With Diss withdrawing from their 2 February semi final, the Vikings progressed to the Norfolk Cup Final on 4 May versus Norwich or Thetford.

Chris Godwin (pictured) was Coltishall Red Lion Player of the Month for January. Now in his fifteenth season at Scottow the flanker has made 263 appearances with only Stuart Loose having made more (464). "Playing as well as ever," said Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters. " He keeps himself very fit and is a role model for younger members of the squad." The Vikings next home game is versus Rochford on 2 March: third v first. They are away this Saturday (16th) at Eton Manor, whilst the Raiders entertain their Ipswich counterparts at Scottow in the Eastern Counties Plate.

The Vikings remain third in London One North on 73 points, 13 more than fourth placed Old Haberdashers. Above them are Rochford Hundred, seemingly unassailable with maximum points (90), and Colchester (81).
