Two more wins means the Vikings have strengthened their grip on third in London One North
With six games left they entered March with 83 points, 19 ahead of fourth placed Old Haberdashers and three behind second placed Colchester. Leaders Rochford, who beat Colchester 36 -12 in their latest game, visit Scottow this Saturday (2nd) - they still have maximum points (100).
Both victories were by large margins. Relegation threatened Luton were overwhelmed 79 -5 at Scottow, the hosts running in 13 tries including a hat trick for Lachlan Brown-Bates (pictured). The trip to mid table Eton Manor, where the Vikings had not won since 2011-12, promised to be much tougher and indeed it was, but they still came away with a 50 - 22 win, though the hosts could not have complained had the winning margin been larger. Jim Riley scored a second half hat trick and Matt Hodgson overtook Henry Dewing as the Club's leading points scorer.
The Raiders won their first two games in the Eastern Counties Plate defeating Bury St Edmunds 3rds and Ipswich 2nds.
The Valkyries Girls squad continues to grow though there is room for more; a year after taking up rugby four have been invited to join the Eastern Counties training squad. The Under 14s,15s & 16s have all

Dear Margaret,
We are a group of men who meet at Stalham Youth Club on Recreation Road in Stalham every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm until 4pm.
We have all had problems in the past and meet for company and friendship. The first week is free but then we all pay £3 to cover the rent of the premises.
Tea and coffee are available and we have four pool tables and two table tennis tables to play on at no charge. Sometimes we go out to places of interest and we enjoy 10 pin bowling at Rossis.
Just turn up about 2pm on a Wednesday unless you don’t have a car then I can give you a lift.
For more information please telephone me on 01692 402638 Yours sincerely, Richard Baker
North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
The Community Centre opened its doors for North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind on 7 February.
The entertainment once again was great - Mr Barry comes regularly every year and sings a medley of songs from the 50s & 60s. There was a special treat this time because he raised funds for the Club at a special Tea Dance he arranged and our Chairperson was handed a cheque for £100. Our raffle raised £34. What a great start to the fundraising this year.
Our meeting on Thursday 7 March will be our AGM and we are hoping that old members who read the North Walsham Times may come along to the Centre and see what we have got organised for this coming year. We are also looking for new members all the time so if you are blind or have sight problems then do try to give us a visit.
We open at 2pm on the first Thursday of every month at the Community Centre.

Scarborough Hill completes makeover
Scarborough Hill has long been established as a country inn serving food, drink and hosting many events. It was taken over by a family from Norwich a year and a half ago. They loved the area and now live within North Walsham.
Over the time Scarborough Hill has been with the new owners, the idyllic country inn has seen many changes and improvements. The latest stage was completed in January this year and there has been a vast improvement in the restaurant, bar and lounge areas.
Meet Duncan Baker
New Conservative Candidate for North Norfolk Constituency
Duncan Baker was selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the North Norfolk Constituency by the Conservative Association on 1st February.
Duncan has been very active in the local community in Holt. He has served as a local town councillor and Mayor of Holt, is a member of the Chamber of Trade, served on committees for the Holt 1940s Group, the Owl Trail promoting places of interest in Holt and on the Christmas Lights Committee.
He is well known in his native Holt but may not be known so well further afield. He was born at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, educated at Holt Primary School, Beeston Hall School and Gresham School. He studied Business Studies at Nottingham Trent University then qualified as a Charted Accountant in 2005. He joined the CT Baker Group in 2008 and is their Financial Director although he has done everything from sweeping the storeroom to serving cheese in the food hall since about the age of 10.
The food offered is traditional British food using high quality ingredients and is very reasonably priced. The owner commented that we would like to make a great place for locals and the surrounding areas to enjoy for dining and socialising. We have spent a lot of time and effort making our food great and would love for all the locals to come and try us.
We hope to make Scarborough Hill a place for everyone to be proud of.
North Walsham Times 561 March 2nd 2019
Duncan has been married to wife Nina for 10 years and they have two daughters, Isabelle 7yrs and Eleanor 3yrs. He said, “family values are very important to me and I want to improve North Norfolk for those trying to work and support their families. I believe in promoting economic growth in the area to enable people to secure jobs and afford housing.
He hopes to champion issues which are important to local people, something he has been doing for the last 10 years, and to improve things for young people entering the job market.
And what does he like to do in his spare time? Some golf and tennis, he enjoys DIY and lately has become interested in gardening, above all spending time with his family.

Free apprenticeship workshop to be hosted by North Norfolk District Council Opportunities for businesses looking at nurturing talent
North Norfolk District Council is hosting a free workshop at its offices in Cromer on Tuesday 12 March from 4pm – 6pm to encourage employers to learn more about the benefits of apprenticeships in the workplace.
The event is aimed at organisations which already employ apprentices as well as those looking for more information about what is involved. Attendees will find out how to maximise the apprenticeship levy including transferring funds to other organisations.
Apprenticeships can play a key role in helping a business grow, as well as improving the overall skills 8
level across the district. Training providers, apprenticeship training agencies and Apprenticeships Norfolk Network will be at the free event, and businesses will be able to learn about the funding opportunities available to them should they choose to offer apprenticeships. Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, said “Apprenticeships are a fantastic route into the world of work, allowing young people to gain qualifications and valuable skills at the same time. “I am so impressed by the apprentices we have working as part of the team here at the District Council, their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. I would encourage anyone thinking about employing or becoming an apprentice to come along and see
what it is all about.”
Attendees will hear from an employer who has successfully recruited an apprentice and from a former apprentice who has completed their training programme and has subsequently been recruited to a substantive role within the same organisation. Training providers will be on hand to offer information on a range of qualifications, including business administration, digital marketing, construction skills and food production.
Light refreshments will be available.
To book a place, please email economic.growth@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call 01263 516331.

North Norfolk’s famous Bagot goats head south for their latest job
Norfolk Wildlife Trust to use the 15 billies for habitat management Some of the famous North Norfolk Bagot goats have headed south to continue their valuable conservation and habitat-management work.
The 15 billies have been sent on a long-term loan to heathland near Thetford, on land looked after by Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
The loan follows the sale of a group of billies to Suffolk Wildlife Trust last year.
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We’re delighted that the wildlife trusts see the same potential benefits as we do. The goats are a cost-effective way of managing vegetation and vulnerable habitats, and they act as a draw for tourists, too.”
John Milton, Head of Nature Reserves at Norfolk Wildlife Trust, said “We are grateful to North Norfolk District Council for loaning us the 15 Bagot goats. For some time we have wanted to experiment with grazing by goats to deal with bramble and gorse, which are a particular issue on some areas in the Brecks restored to grass heath from forestry.”
NNDC’s herd of goats spend the summer on Cromer cliff, where they have provided a cheap and easy way to keep the undergrowth under control. Nine nannies and three nanny kids are currently grazing at Salthouse Heath, getting ready for their next shift back at the seaside later this year, and the herd is expected to welcome some new kids in the next few days.
The Bagot is a rare breed, so the council and the wildlife trusts are playing a key role in securing the breed’s future.
SOS - Save our Sheep
The first of the lambs are now appearing in the fields and Spring is not too far away. A walk with your dog on a bright spring day can be energising after the long, dark winter months. But if you encounter livestock on your walk it’s important to remember that after being kept indoors over the winter, they can be excitable and inquisitive when first let out to graze. For dog owners and farmers alike safety is a priority and you must keep your dog under control at all times. Don't forget farmers have the right to shoot your dog if it is worrying sheep.
Here are our top tips for walking safely where animals are grazing: • Always keep your dog under close control and on a lead where livestock is present. • Don‘t allow your dog to bark at or chase livestock • When approaching grazing animals talk out loud so that they are aware of your presence - this way you are less likely to startle them. Once you reach them, walk quietly past and praise your dog for ignoring them. • Avoid lingering between mothers and their offspring, even a cuddly looking sheep can become defensive of her lamb if she feels threatened. • Always keep your eyes peeled for potential dangers, if necessary find an alternative route around the livestock especially if your dog is elderly or slow • Consider attending Obedience on Walks classes so that you can train your dog to be well behaved and reliable in order to have an enjoyable walk. • Remember, people have been killed by livestock, keep yourself safe and your dog under close control at all times.

Information evening for agents and candidates in advance of North Norfolk District Council elections in May
Ahead of the Local Government Elections to be held on Thursday 2 May 2019, North Norfolk District Council will be holding an agents and candidates briefing at 6pm on Thursday 7 March at the District Council’s offices, Holt Road, Cromer.
The evening will inform potential candidates and political agents about the election process and what steps are involved in standing. Returning Officer and Head of Paid Service Steve Blatch will host a presentation covering such key areas as the election timetable and key dates, the nominations process, candidate qualifications/disqualifications, the role of agents and rules relating to election publicity. He will also outline postal voting arrangements, what happens on the day of poll, count arrangements, candidate expenses and key contacts.

Mr Blatch said “Elections to North Norfolk District Council for the four years from May 2019 will take place on Thursday 2 May 2019. These elections are being contested on new ward boundaries and the briefing event will provide an opportunity for anyone considering standing as a candidate to be a District Councillor to ask questions on the process of nominations, election publicity, and the poll and count processes. The briefing is intended to make the process of standing as a candidate at these elections as easy as possible.”
If you would like to attend then please contact the Council’s Elections Team on 01263 516266 or by email elections@north-norfolk.gov.uk.

Local MP writes to CEO of Sainsburys to ask for reinstatement of cashback service in local North Walsham store
Local MP Norman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive of Sainsburys to ask for the cashback service, which was until very recently available in the North Walsham store, to be reinstated.
This follows growing frustration from local residents who relied on the service in order to pay for shopping and other services in the local area. Norman Lamb MP said “I am calling on Sainsburys to recognise that many of my constituents depended on this vital service. The most sensible way forward is for Sainsburys to once again allow for cashback
in their North Walsham store. It is important that Sainsburys recognise that as a consequence of recent closures of Barclays, Natwest and HSBC branches in the local area, many, particularly elderly residents, relied heavily on the cashback service in their store. Without it, local people will struggle to continue supporting local businesses, some of which still get paid predominantly in cash. This could have knock on effects for the local economy – which is deeply concerning.
I am hopeful that a quick resolution to this problem will be found.”
Santa Cycle Ride raised £1550 for About with Friends and NANSA
The Trunch Fatboys Cycling Club annual charity Santa cycle ride raised a total of £1550 to be divided between About with Friends, Cromer and NANSA. Dressed as Santas and Elves, 32 cyclists from local towns and villages, Norwich and Australia (one Santa!) toured five pubs in North Norfolk on 9 December.
They received a warm welcome at Hill House, Happisburgh, Walcott Lighthouse, The Ship Inn, Mundesley, Trunch Crown and finished at Trunch Social Club for a well deserved buffet laid on by the riders and friends.
Maurice Page, Trunch Fatboys Chairman, said that support from the pubs, their customers and from passers by was great. The cyclists were respectful of other traffic and everyone had a fantastic day. About with Friends Chief Executive Officer, Helen Dalton-Hare, said “Many thanks to all who took part in the cycle ride and everyone who supported them. The donation of £775 will be used to fund Workskills member training days and activities. We greatly appreciate the ongoing support of the Trunch Fatboys Cycling Club”.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Apologies to anyone who has recently tried to contact Stephanie but has been unable to do so as we have had problems with calls. The original problem was caused by power failures which meant that, although the phone rang, there was no connection, Stephanie would therefore be unaware that someone was calling and the answer phone was, of course, also unavailable. This happened over several days, lasting from about 9 am until 1 pm and affected Stephanie and her neighbours. As this occurred during the cold spell, we were also concerned as it affected the heating for our cat pens. Thankfully normal service was eventually resumed.
Another problem then emerged for Stephanie, and her long-suffering neighbours, which we are hoping has also been dealt with. The phone has been ringing but when she picks up the telephone, she cannot hear the person on the other end of the line (this has happened on several occasions when I have rung her). The answer phone has taken messages when she is not available but, again, she cannot hear what the person says.
If you have rung recently, have not heard back and still need to speak to her, please call again. As Open Reach have recently been working in the area, she and her neighbours are all hoping the problem has now been resolved.
Some of the cats that come into care have quite challenging problems when they join us. One such cat was Grace, (who we have mentioned before), a very small cat who had been handed in as a stray at the vets. Grace was very thin and we thought she was quite old. She had terrible diarrhoea and was initially fed just on fish. Gradually chicken was introduced to her diet before starting to give her special food for sensitive stomachs.
Stephanie has gradually been adding ordinary cat food to her diet and we are hoping she will soon be on just normal cat food. Looking at Grace now and comparing her with the little cat she was when she joined makes us all so very Grace, lovely friendly girl, now well on the happy. Grace is such way to good health a very loving little cat and really enjoys interacting with her carers. Once she has had a dental, she will be ready to leave for a new home and although we will be sad to see her go, we will be happy to have helped her regain good health and enjoy life with a loving new family.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

I was asked recently, “can my dog have joint injections for arthritis, like we do?” And, yes they can, but there are lots of factors to consider.
Old age arthritis (or osteoarthritis) is very common in our pets as well as ourselves. It is usually a result of the ongoing wear and tear and instability in the joints, although other factors such as injury, genetic makeup, infection and immune disease can also affect the progression. In order to determine the reason and severity of the problem, x-rays usually need to be taken and then a range of management options considered to determine the best one for the individual patient. Previously these have been restricted to weight and exercise management, joint supplements, pain killers and sometimes surgery, but intra articular injections or joint injections are a relatively recent addition to small animal treatment regimes.
There are a few different medications that can be injected into joints and by careful case selection and ongoing physiotherapy at the same time we
are seeing some really good success in our patients.
One such patient was Dave the 3 year old labrador. He suffers from elbow dysplasia, which is a condition that will gradually worsen over time as the arthritis in his elbows progresses. In order to slow this process and help heal some of the damage already present Dave received injections of platelet rich plasma. This involves using a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate healing. Along with supporting care from the physiotherapists who work alongside us at the practice he has responding really well and his lameness has resolved.
There are many signs that may indicate your dog is suffering from arthritis, but if your pet shows signs of a reluctance to walk, climb stairs, jump or play, limping or lameness, pain or stiffness when getting up or down, licking their joints or a change in personality (aggression when normally goodnatured) then it might be sensible to get them checked over. As with all treatments, the sooner they are started the more effective they are likely to be.

Public sector partners awarded £345,000 to help transform service delivery
The Norfolk One Public Estate Partnership has been allocated a further £345,000 to improve public service delivery and to help realise the maximum potential of land and buildings owned by public sector organisations across the county.
Norfolk’s One Public Estate partnership, which brings together Norfolk County Council, district councils, several NHS bodies and the Police, has been allocated the money by the Cabinet Office Government Property Unit and the Local Government Association (LGA).
The One Public Estate programme aims to maximise the use of buildings and land owned by the public sector, making assets work as hard as possible for taxpayers. This is achieved by the partners developing joint projects to share buildings, transform services, reduce running costs, and release surplus and under-used land for development.
county including redevelopment of the former Mile Cross depot site in Norwich to provide new housing, health care and leisure facilities and feasibility studies for public service delivery hubs in Diss and North Norfolk.
Mr Blatch added “These joint projects, which explore co-location of services, will deliver better service outcomes for local communities whilst securing new housing and jobs through the redevelopment of surplus property.
The Norfolk partnership’s allocation is part of a £15 million investment, awarded to partnerships across England. The money will support further joint working across central and local government.
This can create new opportunities for services to be delivered in a more seamless way, for example by bringing teams from different organisations into one shared building. Examples include Dereham Hospital (Breckland Council); multi-site regeneration proposals in Hunstanton (Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk) involving the reconfiguration of education, library, transport and Blue Light services; masterplanning processes at the Norwich Community Hospital (Norwich City Council), Kelling Hospital (North Norfolk District Council) and Shrublands (Gorleston – Great Yarmouth Borough Council) sites.
Land or buildings no longer needed can potentially be sold, which will eliminate unnecessary running costs and free up space for new homes and employment opportunities within the county.
Chair of Norfolk’s One Public Estate Board and Head of Paid Service at North Norfolk District Council, Steve Blatch, said: “This latest round of funding will allow a number of projects to be taken forward around the

Local MP slams County Council for failing to Council provide for care for to Local MP slams County failing elderly Norfolk man Norfolk County Council placed Mr. May into She recently compiled a directive to say that her Local MP Norman Lamb has condemned Norfolk County Council for a dereliction of duty in the case of elderly local Norfolk man, Richard May. Richard May, a 75 year old local Norfolk man, lives alone and fell ill in February 2018. Subsequently he was admitted to hospital and then placed in residential care, before returning to his home.
His daughter, Clare May first contacted Norman Lamb’s office to complain about the failures of the care system and provision of care that her father received which they both state breaches his basic human rights. Mr. May was put into residential care which she says was against his will. Ms. May has the power of attorney for her father although she says he is able to make decisions for himself given clear information and choice. She is adamant that his wishes were ignored and her father wanted to return to his home.
father refuses to go into residential care and feels that this is an abuse of his human rights.
residential care without notifying his daughter, despite there being written instruction that she should be kept informed.
Norman Lamb and his office have been working with the family to attempt to resolve ongoing criticisms of failures of care and care provision with both the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Norfolk County Council.
Mr. May is currently back at his home and receiving care but Norfolk County Council are unable to source the double care package which they say he needs. The County Council stated that they would withdraw the care package on 11 February and say that Mr. May will have to go into residential care as they are unable to fund the care package he requires.
Ms. May is advocating for her father and he now refuses to go back into residential care or a hospital.
As of 11 February, Richard May will be at home by himself with no permanent care arrangement in place. Emergency temporary care is currently being provided by Norfolk Swift Response, however they are unable to hold care packages in the longer term and Norfolk County Council continue to look for permanent care support.
James Bullion, Chief Executive of Adult Social Services at Norfolk Council has offered to meet with Clare to discuss her father’s case further. However Ms May insists that the County Council should deliver the care package for her father.
Clare May said “My interest in this case has never just been about my father. My interest is in respect of all vulnerable elderly persons who have capacity and an absolute right to choose to remain in their own homes, with adequate care provision.
The whole situation has caused my already vulnerable father an immense amount of distress and has impacted hugely on both him and his family. My father’s unwavering wish is to live at home. He has been repeatedly assessed as being suitable for supported home care, despite ever changing professional opinions as to what that care should look like. We are simply asking for Norfolk County Council and the NHS to support us in providing adequate care and for his medical needs to be met. We ask them to do so with respect, observing his dignity rights and wishes. I cannot begin to describe how stressful this entire scenario has been, but most recently living with the uncertainty of whether all care provision will cease, because it cannot be sourced, with indescribable consequences, has been almost too much to bear. It appals me that any family or vulnerable individual is faced with this in 2019.”
Norman Lamb MP said “There is a fundamental issue at stake here. If a conclusion is reached that someone can be cared for at home, which is the case here, then it must surely be their right to stay at home if that is what they want. It sets a very disturbing precedent for the County Council to attempt to force someone out of their home by unilaterally declaring that care will be withdrawn. This is outrageous. I have been aware of this case for a long while. I am appalled that my elderly constituent has been put in this position.
Richard May and his daughter Clare, have been let down. It should have been possible to organise an appropriate care package by now. I am calling on Norfolk County Council to act immediately to ensure that Richard May is given the care he is entitled to and deserves.
16
This has been a deeply distressing time for Richard May, his daughter Clare and their wider family. It is now time for action and a resolution.”

Get off MY land!
by Susan Matthews, Director, Hayes + Storr Solicitors
This is a phrase often associated with farmers but what if you cannot prove it is your land? In a rural county such as Norfolk, where large areas of land and many homes have remained in the same family for generations, it should come as little surprise that there are areas of land which are not registered at the Land Registry. What is surprising, is the amount of land and property which remains unregistered and how often people are unaware of it.
Compulsory registration only came to rural Norfolk in 1989 and even then this was only for purchases of land for value or leases for a term of over 21 years. In 1998, assents (transfers of land after death) and legal mortgages became compulsory registerable and in 2002 it became compulsory for nearly all land transactions to be registered or, to trigger a first registration. Shorter term arrangements, such as farm business tenancies and leases of less than seven years, do not have to be registered but, may need to be noted against the landlord’s freehold title.
In the absence of a land or property transaction to trigger a first registration, land will remain unregistered unless a voluntary application is made to the Land Registry to register it. This may
be considered an unwelcome hassle and cost, but there is good argument to registering land and property, even if it is just to have a secure and clear record of what you own.
With unregistered farmland, there is often a field swapped with a neighbour many years ago and not formally recorded, or a change in a boundary agreed but not documented. Often, it is the older generation who has this knowledge and can provide evidence of ownership. It is therefore important that the registration process is undertaken whilst current or former owners or farm managers/ workers can provide key facts vital for the registration process. This is particularly the case if title deeds are missing or have been lost or destroyed.
It is much harder to claim adverse possession or ‘squatters’ rights’ over registered property or for a neighbour to encroach onto your land. If you are looking to sell, gift or mortgage your land or property the process is much simpler and quicker (and often cheaper!) if dealing with a registered title.
The Land Registry is keen for land and property to be registered and offers a reduced fee for those registrations which are undertaken voluntarily. It may well be

Challenge of a lifetime for N&N Charity Breast Cancer Appeal
A staff member at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is embarking on the challenge of a lifetime taking part in the final leg of the Round the World Clipper Yacht Race in aid of the Boudicca Breast Cancer Appeal.
but, touch wood, I have not had a problem yet.
“The biggest challenge is not the sailing, because you can learn to sail, but being part of a team and learning to live together for long periods of time at sea.”
Daniel’s family have been very supportive through the mental and physical demands of the training and are 100% behind him as he also raises money for the N&N Hospitals Charity Boudicca
Daniel Cox, a project management officer within the Surgical Division, will take part in the coveted final leg of the race from New York to Liverpool in June 2020 a journey expected to take more than 22 days at sea.
If that wasn’t enough of a challenge, Daniel is also taking part in the Brighton Marathon in April this year – his first marathon and just one year after taking up running with the NNUH Couch to 5k running club.
Daniel said: “I am coming up to my 50th birthday and I wanted to mark it with a couple of challenges. I grew up in Greenwich which is on the route of the London Marathon and also home to all the maritime heritage so it seemed the perfect challenge - I’ve always had an interest in sailing and done it occasionally and I thoughts let’s do something mad. I signed up for the Clipper Race first of all and thought I needed something to drive me and inspire me and am now well into the training programme for the Brighton Marathon.”
The Clipper Race is the only race of its kind where people with no experience of sailing can take part in the challenge which takes in six oceans and 40,000 nautical miles
Breast Cancer Appeal. The appeal aims to raise £800,000 to provide a dedicated one-stop-shop breast cancer service where patients will receive diagnostic tests and clinical and imaging assessments on one day. Daniel said: “I’ve worked at the Trust for two years and it’s a fantastic place to work filled with brilliant people doing amazing things and as part of that I thought what can I do to support it.
Daniel Cox is undergoing months of training to prepare for his race across the Atlantic
over eight legs.
Although Daniel’s leg of the Clipper Race is more than a year away, the full race starts in July this year and his training has already started in Portsmouth where the Clipper is based.
“When it comes to cancer, as with so many people, many of my friends and family have been affected by cancer and the Boudicca Appeal was a great opportunity to raise awareness and support this fantastic cause.”
He said: “It is one of the most challenging things I have ever done. It consists of finding your way around a 70ft racing boat, learning about the different sails and ropes, how to handle the boat and life on board. Once at sea, we will work on a shift system of four hours sleep and four hours sailing and sail through the night. There could be up to 20 people on the boat so we are hot bunking - once you’re up someone else is in your bed. They say even the most experienced sailors can get sea sick
You can support Daniel via his JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/danielcox2020

North Norfolk Photographic North Norfolk Society
Society member Howard Denner gave a fascinating talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on February 6th.
that the organisers had phoned the UK, to speak to the head of the picture agency that Howard had joined: they had reported that he was OK – so he got his Pass.
He started by telling how after some years as a Civil Servant he took the opportunity to take early retirement in his 50s to fulfil his ambition to be a professional photographer, specialising in particular in ‘action shots’ of jazz and popular musicians.
One event that Howard especially wanted to cover was the New Orleans Jazz Festival. He knew he would need a photographer’s pass to get the pictures he wanted and told how he applied and received a non-committal answer. So he rang them up – and again did not get a positive response. So he grabbed the bull by the horns and just went there. On arrival, he went into the press office – and was given a Press Pass. It was only years afterwards that he learned
Howard then showed a number of slides he had taken on his visits to New Orleans. Most members of camera clubs use digital photography now so Howard explained for the benefit of those unfamiliar with slides that they have a habit of being outof-focus when first projected, though usually ‘popping’ into focus as the heat from the projector lamp warms them up. Members were shown the levees, the trams, the colourful local residents in such as Bourbon Street, the Squares and the Churches.
was; many of the photographs were of performers and there were dozens of them and Howard from memory put a name to every one. Lighting conditions in the tents where the performers worked were far from ideal, and those that wore white shirts in particular presented lighting balance problems to a photographer.
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at www.nnphotosoc.org
After the break, there were photos from the festival itself. Some of these were of the crowd – and Howard several times emphasised what a happy place the festival

North Walsham Round Table
Christmas may have been several months ago, but North Walsham Round Table were pleased to hand over a cheque totalling £1608.98 to North Walsham Play. This was 50% of sleigh appeal donations received in the run up to Christmas 2018. The remaining 50% will be used by North Walsham Round Table to support local good causes and individuals across North Walsham.
Ed Margarson, Sleigh Appeal Organiser, wished to thank all the residents and members of North Walsham who gave so generously. He added “the Roundtable and I are overwhelmed at the level of support given. It was great to see so many children enjoy seeing Santa and his sleigh visit many roads across the town during December”.

Come And Row On The Broads With Blakeney Rowing Club
The rowing season continues, despite the variations in weather, with Bluejacket, one of the club’s beautiful skiffs, in full use for several outings on Barton Broad during the week. The club members, or “Crabbers”, are keen to have an active winter in 2019. See crablakeney.wordpress.com for some pictures of rowers in action on the water or enjoying a brief but deserved refreshment break. It won’t be long before the two skiffs are back on the Carnser at Blakeney ready for summer rowing.
The forthcoming competitive season promises to be as full as ever. Events on the schedule include the King’s Lynn Hansa Rowing Festival at which Blakeney will defend six trophies, the Great River Race on the Thames, the local regattas, several races in Essex and the Carrow Cup event in Norwich. On the expedition front, a club group will row in Brittany at La Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan between 27th May and 2nd June 2019. This promises to be a fascinating experience!
Come along and try rowing for yourselves. No previous experience is needed, just a taste for adventure and fun. You don’t have to take part in any of the race events. Social rowing is great too. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join and coaching is always on offer.
If you are interested in experiencing the sheer enjoyment of rowing, contact Tom on 01263 761570.
Hope to see you on the water soon, Barry Howes
Local MPs write to Chancellor to demand a better deal for Norfolk
Local MPs from all three political parties have written to the Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, to request a meeting, following a letter from the Leader of the County Council which raised very serious concerns about the sustainability of funding for Norfolk. The letter was coordinated by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.
Norfolk County Council is set to receive the fifth highest amount of Revenue Support Grant nationally, making it the largest shire county recipient.
This indicates how reliant Norfolk County Council is on central government funding to deliver vital services for local people. The removal of this grant could have very damaging consequences.
In the current climate, it is apparent that there will be a major shortfall in funding, as Norfolk has a comparatively low tax base. This will mean that local people who rely on and need services delivered by the County Council face losing out and being left, in the most extreme cases, unable to get on with their lives.
requesting a meeting with the Chancellor or another Minister in the Treasury. It has become very clear just how serious the financial situation in Norfolk is. There is a real risk that if a solution to this problem isn’t found quickly, the County Council will struggle to maintain statutory levels of service delivery. This will adversely affect many local people who depend on these essential services.
I am acutely aware that there will be some extremely vulnerable people across Norfolk who could lose out, including elderly and disabled people in need of care and children at risk. The Government must listen to the concerns across the party divide about this perilous position. Along with other local Norfolk MPs, I would like to meet the Chancellor to discuss Norfolk’s serious challenges.”
The cross party group of local MPs are keen present the case for a better deal for their local communities and find some way of reaching an agreement with the Treasury to ensure this short fall in funding doesn’t occur.
Norman Lamb MP said “I am pleased that MPs from other parties have signed my letter

North Walsham Table Tennis Foxtrots edge derby
In the Second Division, a North Walsham derby saw Delta's Sarah Tudhope, Tony Bispham and Gudi Scham take on Foxtrot's Marceli Gabriel, Simon Porritt and Jim Crossley. Each Delta took a single with Tudhope winning a topsy-turvy five-setter against Porritt. Gabriel and Crossley both took maximums with no sets dropped while the doubles saw Gabriel and Porritt beat Bispham and Scham from two down as Foxtrots won 7-3. The team also won 8-2 against ASTA with full houses from Gabriel and Tom Wardle plus Joe English picking up a single after recovering from two down to beat Sue Lawes 13-11 in the fifth. Meanwhile Mundesley D beat Delta 7-3 with Bispham picking up a single and Tim Shelley a brace.
A busy fortnight for Gabriel and Wardle saw them play up a division as they joined North Walsham Echoes John Chapman for an away
tie in the First Division against Aylsham Conqueror. The home team of Ashley Marsh, Robbie Ollman and Kit Marsden won 10-0 with Gabriel taking Marsh the distance and the doubles seeing Marsh and Marsden beat Gabriel and Wardle in five. Echoes also recovered from 1-3 down in their match against LCC Crabs as Chapman and Frank Weston won a vital doubles 15-13 in the fifth to seal the team's 6-4 match win. North Walsham Cobra's Colin Smith, Ben Lester and Richard Porritt hosted LCC Lobster's Chris Gould, Kevin Cardy and Char Edwards. Lester's maximum started with a tight 11-9, 7-11, 7-11, 17-15, 11-3 win against Cardy and concluded with an equally tight 13-11, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 13-11 defeat of Edwards. Cobras won the match 9-1 with Gould preventing the whitewash with a win in four against Porritt as well as being edged out 12-10 in the fourth by Smith, with all other battles decided in straight
Millfield’s Sporting Success! Millfield Primary School in North Walsham has been busy over the last few weeks competing in various sporting activities and came home with resounding success in all ventures.
On 16 January the Girls Football Year 4 team and Year 5/6 team took to the pitch to compete in the North Norfolk Sports Partnership Football Championships. Both teams fought well against some fantastic teams which gave them everything they had.
The Year 4 team won 3-0 against Holt with skilled goal scoring from Poppy Dyke and Sophie Ducker and precision timed saves from Emmeline Cox in goal.
The Year 5/6 fought valiantly in four games and finished overall runners up.
Our next outing was to Blickling Park to compete in the heats of the North Norfolk County cross country. In freezing conditions the children raced hard for a place, which saw 10 children gaining a place in the finals!

sets. Cobras were three points away from winning a vital doubles to draw their other match against Crosscourts, but were edged out 6-4.
In the Premier Division, Aylsham Hathor's Peter Ward, Ray Gale and Kit Marsden (playing up) hosted North Walsham Alpha's Andy Beane, Robert Gabriel and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. Fine attacking and use of spin saw Marsden pick up a single in four against Gabriel as well as take Beane the distance. Gale's defence beat Beane in four to take Hathor's other point, but majestic smashing from Baldock-Yaxley saw him to a deserved maximum as Alpha came through 8-2 and the team also gained a 10-0 walkover after Aylsham Enterprise conceded their tie.
Lacey Boldero, Jasmine Kiy and Preston Cutting finished first in their heats! With Lucas Turner 2nd and Aaron Lillistone and Emilie Tomlin placing 3rd. The last event was the Level 2 Norfolk Schools Swimming Gala and many of the children stepped up on the podium for placement in the heats. With Maddy Wicks gaining three gold medals in backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly!
Millfield cannot wait to see what success they have during the rest of the Spring Term.
Well done to all the children that competed keep up the good work!
