At our AGM in February we were delighted to present two cheques for £500 each to representatives from the Friends of Cromer Hospital and a local MS support group (LAMS). The money was raised throughout 2018 mainly from the sale of Christmas wreaths and donations from The Beechwood Hotel. In 2019 we will be raising funds for North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind.
In the coming year we have an interesting programme of events, demonstrations and workshops to which visitors or new members will be most welcome to join us. Meetings are on the fourth Thursday of the month Myra Loose at The Catholic Church Hall at 2.30pm.

The children had lots of fun making and eating pancakes on Pancake Day and then finishing them off with a flipping good pancake race.
Then on World Book Day the children enjoyed dressing up and reading about their favourite book characters. There were lots of interesting characters this year, including the red dragon from Room on the Broom and the skeleton from Funny Bones.

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind
My apologies to Mr Barrie Eke for not putting his surname in the last report. Mr Eke does so much for the Club and we thank him for everything he does.
North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind held its Annual General Meeting at the Community Centre on 7 March.
Also special thanks to Mrs Cynthia Clare for all the work she does baking cakes for our tea and the Christmas fare.
The Chairperson finished her speech by thanking all the kitchen staff and other volunteers who help the Club all through the year. The same committee was voted in to serve for another great year. We then enjoyed a quiz put together by one of the committee members which they called ‘How well do we know our Saints!’. The raffle and second hand clothing stall raised £84.50.
Our next meeting at the Community Centre will be at 2pm on Thursday 4 April. Sylvia Spencer
Council takes mammoth steps to encourage year-round visitors Event hosted to engage local businesses North Norfolk District Council has hosted an event to help local businesses learn more about its Deep History Coast project.
iconic stories of Doggerland and the early occupation of northern Europe, encouraging people to discover its hidden secrets.
The Deep History Coast has so far revealed the most spectacular finds, and with the soft clay cliffs, the area is considered to be the best place to study Ice Age geology in the UK. Happisburgh is the oldest archaeological site in northern Europe, and West Runton yielded the most complete fossilised mammoth skeleton ever found in the UK.
The Council is encouraging businesses to sign up as ambassadors for the Deep History Coast, to use the brand, get involved with the app development and to encourage visitors to enjoy what they have to offer from an indulgent cream tea to a welcoming B&B.
In 2017, the Council's Cabinet agreed to fund a project to help strengthen the local economy and performance of tourism businesses by attracting visitors to the area throughout the year, making the most of the unique stretch of coastline from Weybourne to Cart Gap.
It is hoped that, with support from local businesses, North Norfolk can claim its position as a storyteller and voice of authority for the emerging, internationally significant and
During the event, local businesses heard from key contributors to the project including Jam Creative who are currently developing an app and Whistlejacket, a branding agency who have created a brand that promises to make ancient North Norfolk exciting and engaging.
Work is now underway to bring the project to life through a series of activities including a discovery trail that will see 11 monolith style information panels displayed along the 22-mile Deep History Coast. The Council successfully bid for EU funding to develop an app which will bring the
project to life and where users will see what life in Doggerland might have been like through the eyes of a hominin family.
Further funding has recently been awarded from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) that will enable the Council to make exciting changes to the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer. It is anticipated that a refurbishment will take place in early autumn and will include a Deep History Coast discovery centre that will offer interactive displays, activities and signposting to local museums. Local business owners who would like to get involved are encouraged to get in touch with the District Council by emailing deephistorycoast@north-norfolk.gov.uk for more information. ing her full electric band for a special show marking that momentous achievement. The award-winning rock legend is a vibrant performer and an inextinguishable flame, charismatic, outspoken and impossible to categorise. She has amassed thirteen top 40 singles, recorded twenty-four albums – and still found time to write two books, appear in over forty stage plays, act in twenty feature films and present literally hundreds of television programmes. Toyah rocks into Holt on Friday 26 July for a 40th anniversary retrospective which will include favourite Georgie Fame hit singles and album classics.
New Holt Festival artistic Director Anwen Hurt has announced the first highlights for the 2019 festival. Now in its eleventh year, it’s one of the East of England’s most anticipated events. Each July the festival sets the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town alight with performers, musicians, art exhibitions and literary events. Local audiences and cultural tourists flock to the town to enjoy the delights on offer.
The early announcements include two music stars with many weeks in the charts between them. Both are appearing in the magical outdoor Theatre in the Woods venue.
Punk princess Toyah is well known these days for her TV, film and theatre acting, but it is her music that takes centre-stage in Holt. This year is her 40th as a top music draw and she’s bring-

North Walsham Think Carer Network exists to build the capacity of groups and organisations that operate in North Walsham that support (directly or indirectly) ‘people who help others’.
Local residents (of all ages) are invited to come along and discover what’s going on in North Walsham and sample some of the many activities, services and groups that are open to them locally. In addition, everyone will be invited to say how life could be improved for themselves and others in the town, and how they might contribute to that change.
There will be information, activities for all ages, workshops, presentations, refreshments, music and entertainment, as well as conversations about how change can be brought about.
Topics will range from fitness and health, community learning, employment and training, volunteering, social activities, recreation, personal finance, care support and assistive technology.
The event is for all who wish to become more involved in their community and see it grow, or who wish to have some support to help them join in and make a contribution.
Particularly welcomed will be: ♦ Those new to the town, or whose circumstances have recently changed e.g. recently retired or bereaved; children left home or started school ♦ People looking after someone ♦ Young people looking for something to do or who are young carers ♦ People with chronic health difficulties or disabilities ♦ Anyone who feels lonely or isolated for any reason.
Transport to and from the event and assistance to get around will be available.
North Walsham Think Carer Network has initiated this event and its Treasurer, Felicity Christian says, “we aim to let local people know about the many activities that are going on in the town and how they can get involved. We will also be asking how things could be made even better. We aim to make the event as joyful, interesting and active as possible – a real party atmosphere!”

The Heritage Centre in Aylsham is open again for the 2019 season with a brand-new exhibition called ‘Aylsham Pubs and Inns’ which looks at the history of Aylsham through the many pubs and inns which have traded in the town.
The exhibition is based on the new publication recently produced by the History Society called ‘A New History of Aylsham Public Houses’ which builds on the original research of Elizabeth Gale. There was so much interesting information in this book that a full-scale exhibition has been possible.
We are also continuing our walks in the town from Bure Valley Railway to introduce visitors to the history of the town. Keep an eye on the website www.aylshamheritage.com for more information or why not become a Friend of the centre to receive regular updates. We would love to have you join our friendly bunch of supporters! You can pick up an application form from the centre, or email us on aylshamheritage@gmail.com You can also enrol online at www.aylshamheritage.com
The exhibition details the general history of all the 30 plus pubs which have traded in the town at one time, and links these to other aspects of the town’s history, such as the railways and the wherries and mills. Our first Children’s events of the year start in April. If you have children

Museum of the Broads re-opens for 2019!
The Museum of the Broads opens for the 2019 season on Wednesday 27 March and this year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Lost Railway of the Broads.
A number of you use the A149 on a regular basis, but did you know that up to 60 years’ ago, part of it was a railway line? The line started at Great Yarmouth Beach station which was opposite the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth. It connected the Broads with the Midlands and many holiday makers arrived by train for their holidays. Potter Heigham even had Catfield Station its own halt just for the hire boat clients!
The Museum of the Broads is commemorating this line in 2019 with a special exhibition focusing on the story of the railway. The exhibition will include items from Barton House Railway, the M&GN Circle, the 32A Model Railway Club, and local collectors. If you like anything to do with steam or trains, then this is one for you! What’s more the Museum will be running its popular Easter Trail during the school holidays with prizes for those who complete the trail. Such great fun! Why not check out their events for the year at www.museumofthebroads.org.uk . Catch everything on Twitter or Facebook @MuseumBroads. Go on #makeitstalham this April.
Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’ at Thorpe Market Church
Stainer’s ‘The Crucifixion’ will take place on Good Friday 19 April at St Margaret’s Church in Thorpe Market.
The rehearsal will begin at 3pm with a break between the rehearsal and the performance, which will take place at 6.30pm. There is no charge for taking part. If you are familiar with this work and would like to join the choir for this occasion please contact cantamussingers@gmail.com to confirm your attendance at the workshop and to reserve your score. Conductor Alan Morris and organist Geoffrey Hunter.
John Stainer (1840-1901) was an English composer and organist, including at St. Pauls Cathedral, London. His oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’ is amongst the most popular of all English choral works and portrays the events of Good Friday.
Scored for Tenor and Bass soloists, mixed choir and organ, this meditational oratorio contains recitatives, solos, rousing choruses and congregational hymns. The centrepiece is the evocative anthem “God so loved the world”.
The first ever performance of this work was at Marylebone Church in 1887. It is an oratorio that has stood the test of time and has been regularly sung at churches during Passiontide. It was first sung at St. Margaret’s Thorpe Market in 1997.

Classical Guitar students celebrate success
Listening to music is something that most of us would agree is part of our everyday lives, whether it’s the baby shark song, a hit from the 60s, or a stirring symphony. Learning to play an instrument however, is considered by many to be the preserve of the young, with their perceived quick minds and nimble fingers. As a Guitar teacher, I can emphatically say to everyone reading this article that this simply isn’t true, and I’m proud to say that one of my more mature students has proved just that, by passing his Trinity College Grade 1 with distinction at the age of 73. Colin Woollacott, a retired paramedic from Cromer, along with James Watson, aged 10 from North Walsham, both sat their grade 1 examinations just before Christmas, and were both awarded distinctions, having spent several months tirelessly studying and practicing the pieces they chose, on the instrument they love. James, an incredibly talented youngster, who was inspired to take up the classical guitar after watching his grandad play the mandolin, aims to take his playing to Grade 8 and beyond, while Colin has a more pragmatic approach to his studies, his main goal being to enjoy his playing and let the journey take him where it will. While exams aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, simply learning to play an instrument is a great way to relax, while exercising those little grey cells.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Most people are now aware that when they offer a new home to one of our cats and kittens, they will have been to one of our vets for a health check, been neutered, if old enough and this has not already been done, been vaccinated and chipped. Vouchers will be issued to one of our vets for them to be neutered if they are not old enough to be done. They also leave with four weeks free pet insurance which they will be given the opportunity to continue. This is especially important for older cats as some companies will not cover them. We cannot advise people whether or not they should continue with the company concerned but indicate that the four-week period gives them the chance to compare with other companies before making a decision, if they wish to continue insuring their new family member. We do, however, point out it is important when making comparisons, to make sure they are looking at similar levels of cover. It is also important to look at the small print to see what is being covered for the level of premium being quoted. For instance, some will cover an illness up to a fixed amount each year, while at another level the problem will be covered however much it may cost. In all instances, companies will not cover existing conditions and there is also usually an excess payable (again this may be a one-off payment or could be for each illness covered).
You may decide not to take out insurance on your pet but do please consider how you will pay for any treatment which may be required either from illness or an unfortunate accident. Unfortunately, we cannot help with this.
unwilling to suffer this indignity to their sensibilities. Although the treatments are available in different combinations there is usually one to suit their particular needs. Please, however, do discuss this with your veterinary surgery, as Tinker, lovely young kitten, recently chosen they are the only people who can advise you which treatment will be suitable for your pet.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Hedgehog Haven
Veterinary medicine has come a long way in the last few years, not least in the treatment for fleas, worms, ticks etc. Gone are the days when it was necessary to struggle to get your much-loved companion to allow you to pop a pill down its throat. Nowadays there are spot on treatments readily available to cover all eventualities, for those of us with cats
Pictured is Valentine - you've guessed it - he came into care on 13 February.
He was found in a garden. Seeking food, he emerged from hibernation a little too early. The slight spine loss which is visible is due to mites he has had an injection for them and it should soon clear up.
It is the time of the year when I'm starting to think about releasing. The first ones to go will be males, also the ones who will be soft released, which means a garden with a nest box and food and water available.
After being in captivity for several weeks or months, these hogs need to get used to foraging for their food again, but their natural instinct soon cuts in.
A fund raising Prize Bingo is being held on Saturday 6 April in St Benet’s Hall, doors open at 6.45pm. The money raised pays towards the hedgehogs’ food and medication throughout the year.

More and more of us are keeping chickens as pets these days what to look out for : The symptoms of egg binding include lethargy, straining to pass an egg, sitting alone, increased respiratory effort, unusual bloated lower abdomen, egg/broken egg showing
They are great entertainment, full of character and the eggs always taste better when they are from your own chickens!
Now that spring is on its way our hens are either laying eggs or preparing to. With this comes the potential for egg binding which we have seen a few times this year already.
In light of this our head nurse, Sarah Watts, has put together some really useful information below on the signs to look out for and how to prevent egg binding:
How to prevent egg binding : • The hen’s diet should be relatively high in calcium, grit and vitamin D3 (provided by UV light as well as diet) during the egg laying season. This helps strengthen the eggs shell. • Provide suitable nesting material and facilities to lay eggs e.g. sheltered, clean, comfortable area away from predators. • Owners can reduce daylight hours to a maximum of 10 hours per day to discourage egg laying.
• Plastic eggs can be placed in the nest to make the hen feel as though she has already laid her clutch and therefore doesn’t want to lay more.
what you can do if your worried about your hen : • Call us to discuss why you feel your hen may be egg bound • Run a warm bath of water and place your hen in here to lubricate the cloaca and sooth the tense muscles • Keep the hen separate in a warm environment (on a heat pad or hot water bottle) • Ensure the hen is eating and drinking plenty (keeping hydrated is very important) If you are at all worried about your hen then don’t hesitate to call us on 01692 403202. Ensemble East returns to Aylsham with talented young pianist
including Lisa Cassidy (Soprano), Ed Graham (rock drummer), Tom Primrose (Choral conductor of UEA Choir), Sam Coe and the Long Shadows (a UK Country band), Ed Perkins (film director) and Caroline Bishop, our leader this afternoon. The final work will be Schubert Symphony, No.6 in C Major D589, known as “the Little C Major”. Sadly, Schubert never lived to hear this worked performed. It is a fascinating mixture of styles, and was written at a tipping point in musical history, moving from the classical world of Haydn and Mozart, to the romantic world of Beethoven. Tickets are £13.50 and £5 for under-18’s and available form: J B Postle and Son, 32 Market Place, Aylsham and online at Ticketsource.co.uk/musicmatters
This spring the chamber orchestra, Ensemble East, returns to Aylsham Parish Church for an afternoon concert on Sunday 14 April at 3.30pm. The concert begins with a short piece of blissful 18th century French music by Jean-Phillippe Rameau. This will remove any possibility of stress amongst the audience and will clear the head for what follows. One of Mozart’s most celebrated piano concerto, No.20 in D minor K466 will be performed and directed from the piano by Will Ferguson a charismatic and virtuosic musician. This is expected to be an exciting performance, given a fresh perspective by this young polymath. Will settled in Norwich after taking his music degree at UEA. Since then has used his multifarious skills as pianist and composer across a broad range of musical styles from chamber music to jazz and rock. His passion, though, is classical music, in all its forms. Will has collaborated with many local musicians

Local MP raises poor phone signal in North Walsham in parliament
On Thursday 7 March Norman Lamb MP for North Norfolk, raised in Parliament, the issue of long delays to the completion of works on the BT Openreach mobile Telephone Mast due to serve the Brick Kiln Road area which has left many local people without satisfactory phone signal for over half a decade.
Local residents on the Brick Kiln Road and Spa Common areas of North Walsham have had to deal with virtually no mobile phone signal. Constituents contacted Norman Lamb’s office in 2013. Some have been unable to receive updates on appointments for doctors’ surgeries, small business owners have been unable to contact clients and in the most serious and alarming circumstances, sufferers of long term illnesses have been unable to seek emergency medical assistance.
The initial planning permission for a telephone mast was granted in June 2017. This was due to host both Vodafone and O2 mobile phone signal and was built on an Anglian Water site at Marshgate. Once the telephone mast was erected it was required to be connected by fibre cable to the network. BT Openreach was responsible for this phase of the works.
Local MP Norman Lamb has been regularly pursuing the issue since the mast was erected in November 2017. He spoke to representatives from BT Openreach in November 2018 to question the delay in completing these works and getting mobile phone signal available for his constituents. He made it clear to them that should there not be a resolution quickly, he would raise the issue in Parliament at the next opportunity.
On 7 March, Mr Lamb delivered on his promise and raised the issue in Digital, Media, Culture and Sport Questions with the Minister Margot James MP.
Norman Lamb MP said “It is totally unacceptable that people living on the Brick Kiln Estate and in the Spa Common area in North Walsham have faced limited, in some cases no I Couldn’t Possibly Say phone signal for this length of time. North Walsham Table Tennis No semi final joy for Alpha
In the Semi-Final of the Knockout Doubles Cup, Gresham's School A's Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Jordy Gabriel hosted North Walsham Alpha's Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Robert Gabriel and Richard Westgate (no relation between the two players named Gabriel!) The hosts backed up an opening win in straight with two in four before Bennell and Gabriel beat Baldock-Yaxley and Westgate 11-2, 11-5, 5-11, 5-11, 11-7. Thaxter and Gabriel closed out Gresham's 5-0 win with a straight sets defeat of Baldock-Yaxley and Gabriel. Alpha also lost out in the second Round of the Handicap Singles Cup as they were beaten 5-2 by Aylsham Enterprise.
Also in the second round of the Handicap Singles, Aylsham Norada's Roger Crouch (44), John Hall (42) and Tom Mountain (42) took on North Walsham Cobra's Richard Porritt (36), Ben Lester (35) and Phil Mole (30) with the venue reversed to the Sports Centre at the agreement of both teams due to several teams being in action on the same night at Aylsham. Porritt's reliable defensive returning saw him win the opener against Crouch 61-50 and Lester made it 2-0 to the Cobras with a 61-55
defeat of Hall. Mountain matched Mole in the chopping department as his forehand made the winning difference 61-50 and a decisive win for Hall against Porritt levelled the tie at 2-2. Errors from Mole allowed Crouch to maintain a reasonable handicap advantage and while there was a close battle between Mountain and Lester, the Cobra could not reel in the handicap – Mountain's 61-57 win being the fourth on the trot for Norada. After a strong start by Hall, steady play from Mole won in the end as he came through 61-58 to keep the Cobras in contention. Mountain won a pressure game as his forehand was too strong for Porritt's returns as his 61-54 victory sealed the tie for Norada. Lester won the dead rubber against Crouch, but Norada took the match 5-4. There was better news for North Walsham Foxtrots as Jim Crossley mixed defensive flair with some good attacking play as he and Marceli Gabriel took maximums as the team won 7-2 away to LCC Crabs. LCC Dolphins won 8-1 against a two man North Walsham Echoes team.
A busy time in the Premier Division for North Walsham Beta saw them play two matches in two nights as Mark Blackburn, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone took on Alpha's Richard Westgate, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy
One more victory should guarantee the Vikings third place, their highest since promotion five seasons ago. With four games to go they had 89 points, 16 more than HAC who visit Scottow on 6 April. They were seven points behind Colchester who need three more victories to be sure of the promotion play-off spot.
Given current progress hopes are high that the Under 14s, 15s and 16s will also be playing in the Finals of their Norfolk Cups during that Weekend. Meanwhile the Colts (Under 17/18) meet Holt in an Eastern Counties Plate semi final on 31 March.
The Club is committed to increasing participation amongst Girls both through its own sides, The Valkyries, and in Schools. It was very encouraging that four Schools - Acle, Broadland, Cromer and Flegg - recently fielded Year 7/8 sides (pictured) in inter School fixtures at Scottow.
The Vikings visit Southend this Saturday (30th) whilst the Raiders host Cambridge 3rd XV at Scottow.
The Raiders continue to lead the Eastern Counties Plate table despite losing 32 -29 away to Shelford 3rd XV. In the Norfolk Bowl, victory over their West Norfolk counterparts,

In the Second Division, Gresham School B's Hirmichi Yagi, Adrian Leung and Li Livio hosted North Walsham Delta's Gudi Scham, Tony Bispham and John Harris. A great night for Bispham saw him win his first two singles in five before completing his maximum with a 15-13 in the third win against Yagi. Scham took a brace before being beaten by Livio in five. The doubles saw Bispham and Scham win in five against Leung and Livio to seal a 6-4 win for Delta.
31 -24,took them into the Final to be held at West Norfolk on 4 May during the “Big Norfolk Rugby Weekend.”
Following the one point defeat against leaders Rochford, the Vikings made a sluggish start in their next game at Old Haberdashers going 17-0 down after fifteen minutes before turning things around scoring six tries in a 43 -17 win.

Beane. Westgate had two chances to force a decider at 10-8, but Stone won the opener 14-12 in the fourth and also picked up a set from Baldock-Yaxley. Hook and Blackburn picked up a set from Beane and Westgate respectively as Alpha won 9-1. The next night a two man Beta team of Stone and Blackburn visited Gresham's School A's Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and John Hancock. In the only battle not decided in straight sets during Gresham's 10-0 win, good blocking from Stone recovered from two down before Hancock looped harder to claim the decider.
