Proposal unveiled for £4.15million Cancer Centre at Cromer Hospital

Macmillan Cancer Support invests £2.2 million to support growing number of people living with cancer in North Norfolk.

A £4.15million proposal to build a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital has been unveiled today. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre.

In the 2015 local cancer strategy, potential demand for cancer services within the Trust was forecast to increase by over 200% over ten years.

• Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day.

Gwyneth Tyler, Macmillan Head of Services for South and East England, said: “The number of people living with cancer is growing and predicted to rise from 2.5million today to four million by 2030 .

This centre will help to meet the growing need in North Norfolk and enable more people to get treatment and support closer to home.

• Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually.

• A Macmillan cancer information and support centre.

• The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management.

A planning application will be submitted later this year and, if granted, the building work is expected to take around a year.

It represents a significant investment for the Trust and the N&N Hospitals Charity, totalling nearly £2million and confirms the importance of Cromer Hospital in our plans to increase capacity.

Professor Erika Denton, NNUH Medical Director, said: “Our cancer centre is one of the largest in the UK, treating 6,000 patients each year. We deliver a range of specialist services across Norfolk and further afield.

Although patients will still need to come to Norwich for some of their appointments, this is a fantastic opportunity to deliver more care closer to people’s homes and reduce the number of journeys to Norwich.”

The majority of funding for the centre will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is providing up to £2.2 million and Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which is contributing £1.5million. The remaining £450,000 is coming out of NNUH Trust funds.

“We are delighted to be working with the Trust to improve cancer care for people in North Norfolk but we can only do so thanks to the public’s generous support for Macmillan. As

Currently, Cromer Hospital provides a range of acute out-patient and day case services and has a minor injuries unit.

North Walsham assault appeal

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted in North Walsham.

The incident happened on Friday 15 March outside Sainsbury’s on Bacton Road at about 12.45pm when three women were involved in a verbal altercation.

During the incident, a woman aged in her 20s, was assaulted suffering a swelling to her head, cuts to her hand and soreness to her arm.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information concerning it.

Anyone with information should contact PC Mark Daniels at North Walsham Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

More than 200 knives seized during police week of action

More than 200 knives have been seized during a week of action aimed at reducing knife crime.

Norfolk police was one of 44 forces involved in Operation Sceptre between Monday 11 March and Sunday 17 March – a national campaign which took place to highlight the risks that carrying a blade can bring, as well as targeting offenders who use and carry knives.

During the week officers held a knife surrender initiative where members of the public were able to hand over knives at Public Enquiry Offices across the county without fear of prosecution.

A total of 237 knives were handed in, including machetes, samurai swords, daggers, hunting knives and flick knives.

Officers also carried out high visibility patrols targeting those who carry knives.

There were 114 stop/searches with 26 knives seized and 11 people arrested for possession of a bladed article. Four of those have since been charged. They are :

• Aaron Evans, aged 36 and of Blickling Road in Norwich. Evans has also been charged with possession of a Class A drug.

• Jordan Drake, aged 18 and of Bulls Lane in Gorleston.

Chief Superintendent Dave Marshall said "Reducing knife crime and the violence associated with it is a priority both nationally and here in Norfolk. In one week a significant

amount of knives have been surrendered, preventing them from getting onto the streets of Norfolk or into the wrong hands, whilst a further 26 knives have been seized and taken off our streets.

"Only in the last few days we have seen the impact knife crime can have on communities with the stabbing of a teenage boy in Mountbatten Drive in Norwich.

Investigations are ongoing but this incident highlights how important it is to target those who carry knives to prevent it from happening again. It is also vital we continue to work with our Safer Schools Partnership to educate young people about the risks carrying a blade can bring.

"Police tactics alone will not prevent knife crime and solutions must involve action from education, health, social services and communities themselves. We all have a duty to protect our communities from harm and keep them safe.

"If you know someone who carries a knife, then please contact police. One call could help protect them or potentially save someone else’s life”

Police are appealing for help to trace the family of a woman who died at her home address last month.

74-year-old Sheila Sherwood who lived at an address in Music House Lane in Norwich died on Monday 18 March 2019.

Our varied classes are catered towards a range of different ability levels, from nervous first timer to dance floor master. Whether you turn up along, with a partner or in a group, you will get the opportunity to dance with scores of other learners at our class nights.

There were no suspicious circumstances and despite carrying out extensive enquiries no next-of-kin have been identified.

Easter at St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market is fast approaching

On Good Friday 19 April John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” will be sung by Cantamus Choir augmented by other singers who enjoy singing this much-loved traditional Easter oratorio.

John Stainer (1840-1901) was an English composer and organist, including at St. Pauls Cathedral, London. His oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’ is amongst the most popular of all English choral works and portrays the events of Good Friday. Scored for Tenor and Bass soloists, mixed choir and organ, this meditational oratorio contains recitatives, solos, rousing choruses and congregational hymns. The centrepiece is the evocative anthem ‘God so loved the world’. The first ever performance of this work was at Marylebone Church in 1887.

It is an oratorio that has stood the test of time and has been regularly sung at churches during Passiontide. It was first sung at St. Margaret’s Thorpe Market in 1997.

There is a rehearsal at 3pm led by Alan Morris with Geoffrey Hunter playing the organ. Soloists are Clive McCombie and Simon Gray. The ‘Inspired’ group of artists and craftspeople are planning something special for their annual exhibition at St Mary’s Church, Stalham.

The 2019 exhibition, to be held during early May Bank Holiday, will be based on the theme ‘Revelation’.

Members of the group are busy exploring this theme in many fascinating ways. So what will

they come up with?

Geraldine Watson, the group’s leader, says “There’s a lot of interesting discussion including - biblical dragons, horses of the apocalypse, and hidden images. You’ll have to come and see for yourself what finally appears.”

The group meets once a month in St Mary’s church room. This is no ordinary craft meeting.

The ‘Inspired’ group likes to come up with something really original and meetings are often spent discussing individual projects which need input from different viewpoints.

Dear Margaret,

I am trying to find anyone who has, or knows someone who has, Sjogren’s Syndrome (pronounced Shurgren’s).

It is an autoimmune disease and can have many symptoms such as dry eyes, dry throat and problems with swallowing. It usually appears, mainly in women, between the ages of 40 and 60+.

I’m not enquiringly for any official reason, just that I would like to hear from others about their treatments, comparisons etc. And maybe at a later date have an informal support group.

Dear Margaret,

On 29 December 2018 I had a serious fall as I was leaving Lidls. The staff immediately helped me by covering me with a warm blanket. They called the paramedics who gave me everything possible to ease the pain. An off-duty paramedic arrived too. The ambulance came promptly too and were very kind. A dear lady knelt beside me the whole time.

At Norfolk and Norwich Hospital the surgeon performed a difficult operation and I had good care there and later at North Walsham War Memorial Hospital.

I am now at home 13 March but chairbound.

What do you need to do first when someone dies?

I am often asked what needs to be done as a first step when a family member or loved one dies.

Obviously, it depends on the person’s circumstances as to what are the top priorities, but it goes without saying that the first thing that needs attention is the funeral. The funeral director will deal with the arrangements, but it is worth checking the Will to see if there are any specific funeral wishes. This can be as simple as a preference for burial or cremation but often there is more detail such as where the funeral should take place, form of service, choice of hymns and music, where the remains are to scattered or interred, and sometimes very individual requests.

The death must be registered before the funeral can take place. This is usually done by a close family member at a registry office of the Norfolk County Council. There are, of course, rules. You will need to give details of their place and date of birth, their occupation and all the names, by which they (and their widow or deceased spouse) have been known,

It is important to make sure that the house is secure and insured. Sadly, burglaries do take place so it can also be a good idea to take items of sentimental or financial value elsewhere for safekeeping. Often elderly people under-insure

their house and its contents, so do check the level of cover. Sometimes the security arrangements are insufficient to meet the insurance company’s requirements, so do not overlook this. After 60 days most insurance companies impose conditions and restrict cover on empty properties. If this is a worry, we can undertake property checks and have useful local reliable contacts and knowledge.

There are then the practical matters to deal with such as ensuring that household bills continue to be paid and that the house is kept warm enough so the pipes do not freeze and burst or other problems arise.

If the person has left a Will, the solicitors holding it will need to see the death certificate and have the written authority of all the executors to release it or copies of it. An executor’s authority arises from the will and so exists immediately from the death. A Grant of Probate is often needed to “prove” that the executor(s) have the legal power to administer the estate.

If a person has died without a Will they are “intestate” and no one has authority to deal with anything until the Grant of Letters of Administration is issued by the probate court.

However, practicality must prevail and arrangements can usually be made to keep

things ticking over until either the grant issues or the nearest family members entitled under the intestacy rules get matters moving.

ST NICHOLAS CHURCH EAST WINDOW

In 2011 it was noted in the architect’s fabric report that the East Chancel Window was in a particularly poor condition. The glass had sagged and buckled and was at the point where the panes could start to break.

The window was completed in 1921 and on 13 April 1921 was dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich.

At the end of the Great War the people of North Walsham felt very strongly that they should have a memorial to the 99 men that their lost lives. A meeting was convened by the then Vicar and it was proposed that a war memorial should be placed in the Church, this was carried unanimously.

A lady called Mrs Fernie offered a cheque of £500 if this took the form of an East Window.

A decision was made to consult with the best expert advice obtainable and Mr W D Caroe was called upon as one of the most eminent men of the day in Ecclesiastical Architecture.

Mr Caroe sent a very detailed report and proposal to the committee stressing that the window was a very large and costly undertaking, but that nothing less would be worthy of those local men whose was so deeply mourned.

A figure of £1330 plus fixing cost of £50 to £60 was mentioned.

Not to be put off the people of North Walsham decided to go ahead and raise the money to have the window made and fitted and Horace Wilkinson a stained glass designer was appointed to make the window.

With various legacies from local people and a grant from the ‘War Memorials Trust’ towards the cost, we have been able to have the beautiful window refurbished and repaired.

Our Vicar Rev’d Canon Paul Cubitt asked me in 2016 as a member of the PCC to find out if there were any grants available to help pay towards some of the cost for the window. After research I found out about the War Memorial Trust, but that the window had never been registered as a War Memorial. That was duly done in September 2016 and the condition level had to be stated as very bad. This then flagged up the option to apply for a grant.

Our architects Nicholas Warns have overseen the project and Devlin Plummer Stained Glass conservationists and restorers have refurbished the window.

They were very accommodating in allowing us to visit their workshops and see the window in various stages of restoration.

At the time of writing the scaffolding has gone up in Church and the window is beginning to be re-fitted – it is hoped the window will be in its place again by the end of March.

Roger Buck our Church Warden has been overseeing the work being carried out by the dedicated scaffolders and stained glass professionals.

We had a meeting in Church this morning and saw the first few pieces had been installed, amazed by its beauty we felt it was time to tell everyone about this wonderful work.

The window will be re-dedicated on 23 June at the civic service at 3pm by the Dean of Norwich Cathedral, the Very Rev Jane Hedges.

We have mentioned many times that all our cats and kittens are either chipped with micro-chips purchased by the branch, before leaving us for their new homes, or were chipped by previous families. When they leave us for their new homes, we register the chips on-line with the microchip registering company. We always ask the new owner to provide at least one telephone number and an e-mail address if they use a computer.

From past experience the more ways of contacting the owner the company has, the more chance there is of contacting them should their beloved pet go missing and is subsequently ‘found’. It is also important to ensure this information is kept up to date when people move or change the contact details. We often see appeals on websites etc to find the owner of an animal that has been handed in, either to a vet or a rescue charity, which has been chipped but the owner cannot be contacted from the information held by the relevant company holding the animal’s details. In some instances, although chipped, the chip has never been registered so there are no contact details available (this happens more often with dogs than cats).

One such instance is Pogba, a lovely young male cat, recently handed into our care as a stray. He was handed in from another area to that where he was registered as living but, unfortunately, we received no response from his owner via the contact details held by the company concerned. Pogba has not been registered as missing so he will now visit our vets for a health check and vaccination before being put up for adoption. Please always ensure that your details are registered and are up to date with the relevant company to avoid the heartache of not being reunited with your pet.

A considerable number of cats come into care as ‘strays’ and they are often in poor condition when they arrive. One such cat was Charlie who was half bald when he arrived. The person who handed him in had been

New Cadets Join North Walsham Squadron

North Walsham Youth Survey During February the Phoenix Group of 15 volunteers, led by the North Walsham Youth Gardeners team, carried out a survey of the town’s youth to find out their opinions on the town’s ‘places, activities and opportunities’.

Using a questionnaire on their tablets they engaged with a very impressive 566 people in the 15-24 age group.

Having now analysed the data, the next step was to discuss plans, proposals and actions.

Last month they met with supporters and potential funders, hosted by the group’s supporter Mal Gray of Disc n Dat. Those involved included District Councillor Nigel Lloyd, RNW CIC Director Bob Wright, Community Shop Trustee Paul Oakes and North Walsham Play’s Matt Smith.

The survey asked for support on possible future ‘places, activities and opportunities’. Immediate actions were identified for half of these. The remainder are not forgotten and will form the next targets for this very active and committed group.

Outdoor activities were requested by many in the survey. North Walsham Play will be building an outdoor gym on the Memorial Park and is planning its next project at Trackside that will include a new skate park and a graffiti wall.

Young people often attract negative headlines, so it is refreshing to see the obvious enthusiasm and ideas in this group. They have not stood by and waited for action by others, they have taken the issues in their own hands in a positive way.

There is little doubt that the ‘places, activities and opportunities’ for North Walsham’s youth will be much improved in the next months and years.

Leisure operator starts work to keep North Norfolk active Everyone Active will manage six centres

Six leisure facilities in North Norfolk are now officially under the management of one award-winning leisure operator.

Everyone Active took on the management of Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham, Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre and Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre in Sheringham on 1 April after agreeing a 10-year contract with North Norfolk District Council.

It has also taken on the out-of-school-hours operation of three dual use

sports centres adjoined to local schools in Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham.

Signing up for an on-line service or entering a free competition are just a couple of examples when you might be asked to consent to your personal data to be processed. There is nothing unusual about this but under new data protection legislation there are much stricter guidelines as to how a business goes about getting your consent. How is the procedure performed?

Local business raises £20,000 for charity to celebrate its 20th anniversary

A local business has made a phenomenal commitment to charity by raising £20,000 throughout their 20th year in business, by organising a number of exciting initiatives and events.

The Hearing Care Centre is an award-winning family-run hearing care company, based locally at Aylsham Surgery. The company was established in 1998 and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Staff at the company decided to challenge themselves to raise more money for charity than they ever had done before and pledge to raise £20,000 for their chosen charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a charity which has created over 900 partnerships between deaf people and hearing dogs across the UK.

The money was raised with the help of the

company’s customer base, the general public and employees. Amongst a wealth of activities, staff waded through mud and freezing water in the Whole Hog Challenge, guests ate as many puddings as they liked at a Pudding Club Night, over 400 people attended the company’s very popular quiz nights and over 100 tubes of Smarties were emptied and filled up with 20 pence pieces.

The fundraising pot was also topped up by Barclays Bank, who generously matched some of the Hearing Care Centre’s events up to £1,000 each time.

Communities in Norfolk can bag a funding boost thanks to Tesco and Groundwork

Easter Fun at Holt Country Park

This month the picturesque Holt Country Park will host several fun-filled activities for children, run by North Norfolk District Council’s countryside team.

Community charity Groundwork Norfolk is working with Tesco to help mark the supermarkets 100th birthday by offering communities in the UK the chance to bag their share of £100,000.

A broad range of activities will include an Easter Treasure Hunt and a Woodland Activity day – providing something for every youngster.

As part of the supermarket’s anniversary celebrations, community organisations from across the East of England are being invited to apply for their share of the cash.

The park will play host to an exciting Easter Treasure Hunt for children of all ages on Tuesday, 16 April and will see children exploring the ‘jewels of the woods’, focusing on the beautiful creations of nature.

In Norfolk the Bags of Help Centenary Grant is open for applications.

Throughout July and August the first of two special funding rounds will concentrate on groups delivering health and wellbeing benefits, with a particular focus on groups tackling cancer, heart disease and diabetes, in line with the supermarket’s National Health Partnership.

In addition to the treasure hunt there will be other fun activities such as Easter themed crafts and face painting. There will be two sessions, one at 10am to 12pm and the other at 1pm to 3pm, both cost £4 per child, with face painting at £1.50. Parents must accompany children throughout.

Applications are open to all community projects bringing benefits across the region, with Tesco colleagues involved in shortlisting three applications in each area. Customers are then invited to vote for which group they’d like to receive grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000, casting their votes using blue tokens handed out at checkout points.

Holt Country Park will then be the centre stage for a Woodland Activity Day on Thursday, 18 April. For £10 a child, your youngster can leave their parents at home and join our ranger team for a day of fun filled activities in the woods. The children will learn a wide range of useful skills from den building, wildlife identification, survival skills, orienteering and craft making, running from 10am to 2pm.

Another voting round will launch in November, with even more projects sharing in the cash over the course of the year.

The number of kids born as part of North Norfolk District Council’s Bagot goat-breeding programme has hit a final tally of 12.

The dozen baby animals are all doing well and are enjoying life with their new friends as the herd prepares for another busy summer of habitat management.

Endurance runners deliver sterling performances in national competition North Norfolk District Council-run scheme continues to prove successful

North Norfolk District Council’s Sporting Centre of Excellence (SCOE) scheme continues to go from strength to strength, with some of its near-100 participants performing well in national cross-country races this weekend.

Each race in the English Cross-Country Schools Championship, in Leeds, had 350 athletes from across the country taking part. Hattie Reynolds (Junior Girls) finished 14th – only a few seconds short of qualifying for the England team.

Brad Keay (Junior Boys) also did well, finishing in 66th position in his race and being the first Norfolk athlete to cross the line. Meanwhile, Tia-Lilly Crane (Junior Girls), Grace Buchannan (Intermediate Girls) and Henry Jonas (Junior Boys) all achieved creditable mid-field finishes.

In total, there are 93 students benefiting from the SCOE scheme at the moment, and they are taking part in cricket, netball, hockey and endurance running.

The SCOE programme has been a huge success and is now in its third year. It enables children aged between 11 and 14 to benefit from specialist coaching, funded by NNDC and supported through the council’s sports and leisure team. Participants enjoy the high-quality facilities available at Gresham’s School.

Parents and schools are being encouraged to start thinking about making nominations for next year’s programme, which kicks off with selection trials in September.

Red Loft Theatre returns to the Atrium in North Walsham this April with a production of Annie the musical starring not one, but two, gifted young actresses in the role of Annie.

Aylsham High student Leah Feetham, aged 11 and 10 year old Carly Thorpe, a year 6 pupil at North Walsham Juniors, will both take to the stage in the title role. Leah has taken part in a number of local shows and Carly made her debut last year as an understudy in Oliver! The girls are both dedicated performers who study singing, dancing and acting and already have a number of qualifications between them!

Following the excellent response to open auditions last December, director Tracey Loftus decided to run two teams of youngsters in the roles of orphans. She explained, “So many enthusiastic and talented children came to audition that it was impossible to pick just the 11 we wanted, so I decided to try doubling the parts up - a first for me! I was worried it would make rehearsals difficult but actually it’s worked really well and by watching each other rehearse, all the young actresses have improved their skills.”

This year's North Norfolk Table Tennis Championships at North Walsham Sports Centre saw 40 players (not counting the two withdrawals) battle it out over the 129 matches required to determine the champions of the 10 events with play across the 6 tables lasting for a continuous 8¾ hours.

Aylsham Dodgeball for Project Course Aylsham High School offers the Edexcel Level 2 Higher Project Course as an option subject.

In previous years groups have looked at the possible legacies of hosting a sporting event, have planned, organised and led a dodgeball festival for the Aylsham Cluster year 6 primary school pupils and looked at school transition from year 6 to year 7.

This year, 5 students from year 9 decided to work as a group to focus their thoughts onto the health and fitness of year 6 primary school students.

The project class have been conducting on-line research about a variety of issues surrounding health and fitness in younger children and devising ways to increase health and fitness.

They visited each of the cluster primary schools and deliver a session on what health and fitness are. They made a health and fitness flyer to give to each of the year 6 children and directed their attention to the government

website Change4Life which has lots of good ideas. They also made a fitness DVD for the primary schools which can be used in a classroom behind a desk.

During each school visit they led fun dodgeball games, which helped the year 6s think about a few dodgeball throwing techniques.

These games were well organised and they were able to adapt their sessions to suit the size of school hall, the number of students in a class and the ability of the students.

During the year, they helped to lead sporting team challenges at a year 6 induction day and helped officiate at our year 7 inter house dodgeball competition.

Then on Tuesday 5 March , after many meetings and much preparation, they hosted the Aylsham
