Centenary of conception for cherished town hospital It is a milestone year for North Walsham’s War Memorial Hospital. For a century ago a public meeting sowed the seed for its creation.

The hospital’s Friends group is asking for public help in tracking down information about that historic first gathering.

And they are also using the 100th anniversary to recruit more members to carry on the tradition of community support for the much-loved health care unit.

The original hospital was opened in August 1924, but its conception was five years earlier – as the nation recovered from the pain and carnage of the Great War.

A meeting was held in 1919 to seek local people’s backing, and funding, for a ‘cottage’ hospital. It aimed to care for the community’s sick and to remember the local soldiers who gave their lives in the war. Continued on page 4...

Centenary of conception for cherished town hospital It is a milestone year for North Walsham’s War Memorial Hospital. Continued from front cover...

Records of the meeting are scarce and the Friends would like to hear from anyone with local history or family archives which might shed a bit more light on that vital first meeting.

Friends chairman Keith Jarvis said “Our hospital was born through public support, and we are proud to carry on the tradition. Even though the hospital is run by a health trust, the extras we provide make a difference to the lives of patients, families, friends and staff. We are looking for new members to support our efforts – and have some fun and friendship along the way. And we hope there may be people out there who can help with our detective work in tracing more details of the public meeting that started it all.”

The foundation stone for the original hospital was laid on 18 September 1919. The unit was opened in August 1924 by Princess Marie Louise. Today’s hospital, opened in 2012 after the original was demolished, is run by the Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust.

A Caring Contribution

On Friday 5 April, staff from the Garden Centre at Bakers & Larners of Holt were proud to donate a selection of Brambles Hedgehog Foods to Hedgehog Haven, North Walsham.

Thanks to continuing public donations the Friends pay for improvements and extras beyond the basic “health service” budgets – from a £22,000 revamp of the day room to Christmas gifts for patients.

Receiving the foods was Marion Grimes.

Following their attendance at this year’s Deco trade show, the Bakers & Larners store was chosen as the winner of a Brambles Pet & Wildlife raffle. Having won the food prize, Bakers & Larners selected a local cause to donate their prize to Hedgehog Haven.

To find out more about the friends and to make contact visit the website

www.northwalshamhospitalfriends.org.uk

A small home-run facility for sick and permanently disabled hedgehogs from the North Norfolk area, Hedgehog Haven is a self-funded organisation with the aim to nurture injured hedgehogs back to health for release into the wild.

At its capacity, Hedgehog Haven can care for up to 59 hedgehogs. Presenting the hedgehog food donation was Finance Director, Duncan Baker, and Mark Davison of the Bakers & Larners Garden Centre.

Bakers & Larners would like to thank Brambles Pet & Wildlife for their prize donation and Hedgehog Haven for inviting Bakers & Larners store staff to their wonderful location.

There has been one new admission, Corre, a female who needs building up. Although she has survived hibernation, she is underweight so I will be getting her up to a better weight before releasing.

It's a very busy time with many going to be released - by the end of the month another 10 should have gone back to the wild giving them a chance to find a mate and help increase the dwindling population. North Walsham Times Issue 565 27th April 2019

North Walsham conservation group declares independence

a group of independent-minded norfolk conservationists have decided to go it alone in their attempts to make the north east of the County a greener place.

The North East Norfolk Conservation Volunteers group were originally set up by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) as part of a project supported through a £52,700 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, but the time has now come for them to take control of the group themselves, in order to continue the good work they have been doing for over two years at sites in North Walsham and the surrounding area.

Much of the group’s work is along old abandoned railway lines, protecting both the wildlife habitats and the built heritage. Once there were dozens of trains a day passing through now abandoned stations at these sites, but now anyone can walk along the old track beds – part of the Norfolk Trails network - to see the delicate wildflowers which have been saved, near the car parks at Felmingham and Knapton.

As well as conserving wildlife, the group have also transformed the old Honing station near Briggate, which now features a trail of interpretation boards explaining the wide variety of preserved features, including platforms and the remains of the station buildings. Daniel Knights of the Norfolk Railway Heritage group said, “The impact has been brilliant. It's really set a level of how a disused station like Honing should be looked after. We have been using this as a showpiece for what can be achieved in other locations that we want to work on.”

Project Officer Mark Webster said “This is the fifth group of conservation volunteers in Norfolk that TCV has guided to become fully independent in the last 12 years, and I am delighted that our volunteers - who have achieved so much here along the old railways, are now ready to carry on under their own steam!”

Head of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, East of England, Robyn Llewellyn said “Thanks to National Lottery players, the North Walsham’s Natural Riches project has actively engaged people in protecting both the wildlife habitats and the built heritage of the local area.

Communities are a key part of that story so we’re delighted to support this project, which has the enthusiasm and hard work of local volunteers at their core.”

The North East Norfolk Conservation Volunteers will carry on providing weekly opportunities for people in the North Walsham area to meet new friends and learn new skills at any of a series of sessions which run each Wednesday afternoon. In April and May the group’s activities will include painting old-style level crossing gates, a walk in a spectacular bluebell wood, and tackling invasive bracken at Bryant’s Heath, a Site of Special scientific Interest near Felmingham.

Anyone wanting further information or a programme of activities should contact Nina on 07565 196 293 or email: nencv@protonmail.com

More details about the activities can be found at www.tcv.org.uk/norfolk

My Garden in Spring

The prunus tree is very bright, a glorious picture of pink and white, dwarf tulips and forget-me-nots mingle together, they don’t seem to mind the inclement weather. The camellia bush has become quite tall, its creamy-white flowers grow along the brick wall. The birds take a dip in the little round pond, then spread out their wings and sing a sweet song. It’s lovely to see the garden in spring, and the pleasure and joy this season brings. Diane Berthelot

Clapham & Collinge ‘Spring Clean’ Legal Briefing Neale Grearson, Partner, Head of Family and Charities Departments

Our Spring Clean legal briefing will give people the opportunity to think about the options. And make decisions. Early. Prevention is better than cure so we will offer plenty of legal solutions to prevent bigger and worse problems happening in the future.

why do we wait until new Year resolutions or spring to think about and make big decisions in our lives? too busy. scared. other priorities. whatever the reason we all do it!

to book your free place, please contact andrea smith on 01263 823398 or email asmith@clapham-collinge.co.uk

Spring is one of those traditional times to take stock. Putting off big decisions can be dangerous. And that’s particularly true with legal decisions that could affect the rest of your life or the lives of members of your family.

All Saints Church Beeston Regis John Hurst Exhibition

During the early bank Holiday weekend, 4 -6 May, well known professional watercolourist and sheringham resident, John Hurst, will be holding a special exhibition in beeston regis Church.

Half of people in the country don’t have wills so on their death what happens to their assets is left to the arbitrary “intestacy” rules. Even fewer have a Lasting Power of Attorney so if they become incapable of dealing with their own finances no-one can step in to help.

Aimed at raising funds for this beautiful coastal church, John has painted a new, colourful and detailed watercolour of the church, from which fine prints are to be published. Much of the proceeds from the original painting and all the profits from the prints are to be donated by the artist, who in the past has supported the national minsters of York, Durham and Lincoln in the same manner. Last summer, John attended a flower festival at the church with his wife, Jacqui and was touched by the welcoming ethos that he encountered there. Over coffee and cake, fund raising for a new toilet came up in conversation with Assistant Curate, Revd Ruth Adamson. Having completed a major national charity project for Sir Ian Botham’s Foundation via his last watercolour book, ‘On My Way’, John was looking for the opportunity to support a local charity, so this seemed a very worthy initiative. The original painting will be on sale at the exhibition, alongside a new collection of John’s maritime and Norfolk studies with an opportunity to reserve prints.

One in two marriages end in divorce so pre nuptial agreements are becoming an essential part of wedding planning.

Parents are lending money to children and their partners so they can buy a home and get on the property ladder but without their children thinking about what will happen if they split up. The Bank of Mum and Dad are now increasingly seeking a more commercial and less emotional approach to safeguarding financial arrangements for their children - and themselves.

Life is no longer simple! People have extended families. Receive inherited wealth. Live longer! So essential legal planning is an all the year necessity but we leave it to a Spring Clean to think about often difficult and unpalatable things.

'My Favourite Song'

If you were given this title for a flower display, which song would you choose and how would you put together a display to match that theme?

A good question to ponder on! Fortunately for us all there are some talented flower arrangers who will be doing just that and you will have the opportunity to see their results for free at Northrepps Church in May.

The Flower Festival, the first to be held in Northrepps' lovely church for many, many years, will also be accompanied by a sale of local handmade arts [paintings, cards, art glass, jewellery, clocks and other items made from oak] and a choice of lovely refreshments to sample as you browse the flower displays and listen to the accompanying tunes.

North Walsham Times Issue 565 27th April 2019

We are fortunate in Norfolk to have a great diversity of wildlife on our doorstep As Spring warms up the animal activity increases and we see abundance of animals and insects that have been dormant over the winter. This is also the time of year that snakes, such as adders, come out of hibernation and start to bask in the sun. Whilst these animals are very beautiful they can pose a deadly threat to your pet.

Adders are not aggressive animal but will bite if they have no other option. This is often the case when they are trodden on as they have no means of escape. This is not good news for your dog, and often happens completely by accident, as they are often unaware that they have trodden on an adder until it is too late.

What should you do if your dog is unfortunate enough to be bitten? Phone your local vet immediately as early treatment will reduce the risk of serious infection, organ failure and sometimes death. With our proximity to heathlands and sand dunes we carry a stock of anti-venom at both our practices, in North Walsham and Caister. We recorded six cases of adder bites last year and have already seen one this year fortunately all patients survived thanks to prompt treatment.

Remember, if you are concerned and think your dog may have been bitten by an adder, act fast and call your vet immediately.

Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

The symptoms of an adder bite are two puncture wounds where the teeth have penetrated the skin, a marked swelling, typically on the face or legs which can be dark in colour. Dogs may also seem lethargic, drool excessively and have vomiting or diarrhoea.

Bacton Sandscaping Project

North Norfolk District Council can confirm that works have been completed to remove a significant amount of protective material from Bacton cliffs over the past week.

There are ways to protect your dogs, try to avoid walking in open heathlands/sand dunes in the spring months as the snakes are emerging from hibernation and more likely to bite. Whilst you are walking scan the surrounding area for any sign of snakes and consider keeping dogs on a lead if you do walk in these areas. We see a marked increase in snake bite incidents during the months of April/May and again in September/October when they become lethargic again.

A minimum coverage of protection will remain temporarily on the lower levels of the cliff to ensure the successful delivery of the Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping project and to ensure that sand martins are not disturbed while the works take place.

Your legal matters in safe hands for generations

The project, five years in project development since the devastating coastal tidal surges and subsequent floods of 2013 and 2017, will help to protect hundreds of people’s homes, local businesses and nationally important infrastructure for many years to come.

Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

Monitoring will continue to take place three times a day, with further advice and surveys by the site team and ecologists.

This decision has been reached following further discussions with the RSPB and Natural England.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are delighted to advise that Tyler, FIV positive cat (photo in last edition) has now left for his new home as an indoor cat.

When we re-home our cats we advise people to contact us if their circumstances change and they can no longer look after them, as it is our policy to take them back into care. One such cat is Poppy, whose owners contacted us when health problems meant they could no longer give her the attention she was used to. They were also concerned as she had been losing weight recently and her head had developed a ‘tilt’.

Stephanie advised them that, although we did not have a space, we would take her in as soon as possible. As she was already booked to see her vets at Westover, she suggested they go ahead with the consultation and let her know the outcome. Because of her age and the weight loss, it was possible she could have a thyroid problem but this could not be confirmed without blood tests.

In the meantime, the owners had spoken to another charity who advised they would not be able to re-home a cat with thyroid problems, so they suggested the cat be put to sleep. Although the very caring owners were upset to hear this, when they took Poppy to the vets, they requested this should be done, rather than carry out any investigations. Obviously, without the tests, Rebecca, at Westover, was not happy to do this so persuaded the owners to sign her over to them. The owners contacted Stephanie to advise her where she was and we then contacted Westover to let them know that we were happy to take her into our care.

Because she was going to one of our fosterers, who uses the Bridge, she was taken to them for the blood tests and further investigations. Although most blood tests are now undertaken ‘in house’, in this instance they needed to be sent to an external laboratory. We were delighted when the tests came back negative but the vets then had to consider why her head was tilting. She then had an x-ray to see if she

had polyps or a tumour in her ear and these also were clear, although there was an indication of an infection there.

When David, her vet subsequently re-examined her ear, he discovered a very small tear in the middle ear. Poppy, now looking much better, a very gentle Poppy is now little girl who enjoys having a fuss on very strong antibiotics and, after less than a week, a big improvement can be seen and we expect her to make a full recovery.

As Poppy had been going to Westover on a regular basis for routine treatments ever since she was re-homed, they are very fond of her so we have kept them advised of her progress.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

His display started with covers from Peter Watt’s display from the pre-stamp era of postage in the mid 1700s, when Belgium was part of the Austrian Netherlands and not a country in its own right. Grant boost for canal lock restoration

Work will start this summer on restoring Ebridge Lock, the best-known of the six along the North Walsham and Dilham Canal.

The project, estimated to cost up to £35,000, has been made possible thanks to a £26,000 EU LEADER grant to the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust which is working with the canal owners to regenerate the 19th-century waterway.

The funding will cover the cost of manufacturing the top gates and ‘stop planks’, which block off the lock enabling repairs to be carried out.

Volunteers will carry out the restoration with some professional help and the trust is appealing for donations to cover the cost of specialist contractors, materials such as bricks for the lock walls, and equipment hire.

restored the reach to Ebridge," said Trust Chairman Ivan Cane. "However, the waters are only held back by a wall of cement bags placed at the top of the lock some 60 years ago. This grant will lead to the replacement of the bag wall with new gates - that will sustain the present level of water for people and nature, as well as being a visual reminder of the past. This will also be the first stage in the restoration of the second lock on the canal."

"The Ebridge Lock area has become a magnet for locals and tourists to walk, fish, boat or just sit since the Old Canal Company (OCC)

Bacton Wood Lock, one mile upstream, has been restored over a 10-year period by the OCC, which owns that stretch of the waterway, and volun-

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind met on Thursday 4 April at the Community Centre to be entertained by our very own swing along twosome, The Squeegees who cheered us up by singing a medley of 50s and 60s songs that we could all sing along to, with the odd rock n roll number! The Squeegees have been coming to us for quite some time now and they get better and better every time.

Aylsham Singers’ Spring Concert

Following a recent recruitment drive, several new members have joined the Aylsham Singers choir and are now looking forward to performing in a Spring Concert on 18 May. The title of this concert is ‘Beyond the Sea’. It will include a wide range of songs by popular composers and other less well-known but, nonetheless, lovely songs. In addition to performances by the full choir, there will be soloist and instrumental pieces. Proceeds from this concert are being donated to ‘Shelter’ - a charity aimed at supporting the homeless. Later in the year, the Aylsham Singers will also be involved in recording a charity single to help raise further funds for ‘Shelter’. The Aylsham Singers’ Spring Concert is being held at St Michael’s Church, Aylsham www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

RAF Radar Museum has become yesterday’s news… Greg Hayman continued “Following wrapping chips! its most successful year ever, the RAF Radar Museum has opened for the 2019 season with an air of celebration as it has recently taken over the top spot as the best local visitor attraction according to those that know - the people who visit it. We couldn’t wish for a better start to the year!”

In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF Radar museum has produced its own newspaper so that fish and chips can we wrapped up in it.

In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads, the museum is providing the printed newsprint wrappers for the takeaway service.

The newspaper includes a range of museum news and carries a voucher for a £1 off admission for visitors bringing the voucher with them to the museum.

Despite being a top visitor attraction, it has not always been well known as the museum sits on the site of one of our most Top Secret military bases and didn't even appear on a map until recently. That all changed when the Cold War ended and part of the base became a museum.

Museum marketing manager Greg Hayman said “We were looking for interesting ways to connect with potential visitors and we thought we would try this idea to combine great eating with a sense of nostalgia for how chips were wrapped in yesteryear.

“If it proves popular we hope to extend it throughout the season and maybe to chip shops in other towns. We like to think that we are making news and this way we are, quite literally!”

Chip shop manager Michael said “We thought this was a great idea and offers our customers something a bit different and we are teaming up with a great local visitor attraction so it’s a win win for us both!”

The ‘newspaper’ chip paper has been designed

and printed by Century Printers in Stalham.

In other news, the Radar Museum is celebrating because it has become the number 1 visitor attraction in according to TripAdvisor.

The museum is a great place to visit for a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all the family. There are over 20 exhibition rooms as well as outdoor exhibits. Plus, there are three free presentations running throughout the day, one in the WWII Operations Room and one in the Cold War Operations Room and one on the Bloodhound surface to air missile system. You can relive the experience of RAF staff who monitored the skies keeping us safe during the war and during the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

Evan’s crab

What do you get when you mix a fast bowler with a two Rosette restaurant…?

“Those first couple of years were quite an experience,” remembers Richard Graveling, a former teammate of Evan’s at Cromer, “so it was always good to see a friendly face whenever ET and Kerrie came in for dinner.

Evan Tuck and Reis Khalil

Well, this summer you could end up with a delicious ginger, coriander and chilli crab dish, courtesy of an old friendship and the local cricket club… As a fearsome paceman for Cromer and Norfolk CC, Evan Tuck was already a good friend of the Graveling family, and when the Grove opened its restaurant in 2012 Evan and his wife Kerrie were one of the first couples to visit.

“ET is a great chef himself and, after tasting his crab, I thought that it had to go onto the summer menu (with some beautiful finishing touches from our head chef Reis Khalil).” “It’s a lovely recipe from the (now extinct) Red Lion in Upper Sheringham,” says Evan. “I’ve added some coriander, cheese and chillies, experimented lots to get the flavours just right, and I’m now really happy with it. “I love cooking just as much as I used to enjoy knocking over opposition batsmen for Cromer and I’m chuffed to see one of my home efforts on the menu!”

To book your table call 01263512412 or visit thegrovecromer.co.uk

For one crab: One teaspoon finely chopped ginger. One teaspoon olive oil. One teaspoon finely chopped coriander. Dash of salt and pepper. One tablespoon single cream. Mix with fork loosely. Return crab to cleaned shell and smooth into space. Grate Norfolk Mardler cheese; enough to cover the crab. Finely chop half a mild chilli and shake with cheese. Cover crab. Bake on 180c for 10 mins, checking cheese has melted.

SAMMY THE SEAGULL'S LAMENT So! what is it you do not like? I ain't done nothing wrong, The language people use to me Is often very strong.

Now! Take that lady over there A robin on her hand Taking morsels she's placed there They're such a happy band.

Yesterday she sat there A sandwich on her lap So I went to get a beak full But she gave me a mighty whack. Those cheeky little blue tits Pecking at the cream If I try it on an old black sack They give a mighty scream.

I've heard they're taking pot shots Just along the coast But they would not shoot a buzzard And of that they surely boast. Buzzards are doing nicely But we're on red alert So please just leave us all alone 'cos that is really smart.

We nest high on the roof tops Now that is wrong they say Those blasted martins come each year But that is quite OK. We are beautiful, high flying, Sociable, full of grace, Intelligent, good parents, Far ranging at a pace.

We're not acceptable we know You will have to lower your par Of course we know the answer Eat your sandwiches in the car! www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Brewery launch ale which is set to fly A Norfolk brewery is set to launch a new beer to celebrate a milestone for one of the UK’s most dynamic aerobatic display teams.

Wildcraft Brewery will unveil their Brewery’s Egg Hunt competition.

on using as many foraged ingredients in their ale as possible.

Willie Cruickshank from Wildcat Aerobatics said “It’s been really exciting to work with Wildcraft to develop the Wildcat beer and I’m delighted with the delicious IPA we’ve created together. It’s smooth, effervescent and wellrounded with just a hint of fruitiness. A glass or two of chilled Wildcat IPA is going to be the perfect way to top off a day of hardcore aerobatic display flying in what’s shaping up to be a busy summer for Wildcat Aerobatics. This local partnership with Wildcraft Brewery has also enabled us to provide fans of this artisan beer the chance to enter a unique competition to win a flight with us and experience the "Wild" G-Forces of aerobatic flight for themselves.”

Wildcraft Brewery, based in Buxton, is hoping their Wildcat beer will fly off the shelves thanks to their collaboration with Wildcat Aerobatics, who mark ten years together as a team in 2019.

The Norfolk-based team, who fly a pair of Pitts Special biplanes, display throughout the UK and Europe.

Over the past few months Wildcraft Brewery and Wildcat Aerobatics have been working together to produce a very drinkable pale ale at 4%. Made using Chinook and First Gold hops the beer is smooth with traditional bittering and a hint of orange on the nose.

Mike Deal from Wildcraft Brewery said “Wildcraft has always been about community, collaboration and exciting new adventures that may not normally be seen in the brewing world. With this in mind, we were so excited when Wildcat Aerobatics contacted us about a collaboration. After only a couple of meetings, friendships were formed, and the beer and competition were born.”

Ahead of the launch of the Wildcat beer,

Wildcat Aerobatics and Wildcraft Brewery launch Wildcat beer. L to R Mike Deal, Willie Cruickshank, Al Coutts and Mark Goodman

Promotional beermats will be scattered throughout pubs in Norfolk, complete with interactive Snapchat codes. People are tasked with collecting a set of six different competition beermats to be in with a chance of winning a flight with Wildcat Aerobatics as well as beers, brewery tours and WildFest tickets.

Wildcraft Brewery, run by Mike Deal and Mark Goodman, launched its first craft beer in November 2016 and have since created more than 15 different brews and pride themselves

Al Coutts of Wildcat Aerobatics said: “It’s quite an honour to have a brewer of Wildcraft’s calibre create an ale for us to help us celebrate ten years since the foundation of our team. Having sampled the beer, I’m sure it will go down a storm!”

The beer will officially be launched on cask at Norwich City of Ale on 23 May.

You can sample the beer and watch Wildcat Aerobatics at the same time on Saturday June 1 when the team plans to display at Wildcraft Brewery’s WildFest event in Buxton.

Never leave lit cigarettes, cigars or Smokers urged to cut risk of home fires • pipes unattended – they can easily

Smokers are being warned about the deadly dangers of the habit - especially when tired – as Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service joins forces with other services for the Fire Kills campaign. Cigarettes and other smoking products cause just over a third of all accidental fire fatalities in the home. Smoking is also the single biggest cause of accidental fires in the home, often because of careless behaviour such as smoking in bed or not taking care after drinking alcohol. And when smokers fall asleep with a lit cigarette in hand, their proximity to the resulting fire seriously lowers their chance of making an escape. Smokers are advised to ‘Put it Out, Right Out’ whenever they light up; to install smoke alarms on every level of the home and to test them regularly. Without a working smoke alarm, you are at least seven times more likely to die in an accidental fire in the home. these simple steps can help prevent a cigarette fire in the home: • Never smoke in bed. Take care when you’re tired – it’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set furniture alight • Never smoke when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If your lit cigarette starts a fire you could be less able to escape. • Put it out, right out! Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished • Fit a smoke alarm and test it weekly. A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

overbalance as they burn down • Use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over easily and is made of a material that won’t burn. Norfolk’s Chief Fire Officer Stuart Ruff said: "Every five days, someone dies from a fire caused by cigarettes or smoking materials in the UK. Despite a fall in the overall number of fires caused by these products, it’s still the biggest cause of accidental fires in the home. Bad habits such as smoking whilst in bed or under the influence of alcohol increases the risk of falling asleep before you ‘put it out, right out’. Make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them regularly. A working smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape if the worst should happen.” Dr Louise Smith, Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said: “As well as being a fire risk, smoking remains one of the most important causes of early death and health inequalities in Norfolk. We have specialist services that can help smokers to quit – Smokefree Norfolk will discuss the best method of quitting with you, come up with a plan and support you throughout your quitting journey. You can contact Smokefree Norfolk at www.smokefreenorfolk.nhs.uk or by calling 0800 0854113. “And if you are not quite ready to quit, we recommend switching to vaping, which is better for your health and reduces the risk of fires.”

walk for Parkinson’s at the beautiful blickling estate is back this year on saturday 11 May.

The breath-taking red-brick mansion and its ancient yew hedges sit at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park in the beautiful Bure meadows. The landscape with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes has changed little over the centuries and is quintessentially Norfolk.

NO BIKE ... NO EDUCATION ... NO CHANCE … Katie Maidment profiles Support Cambodia’s biggest event of the year …

Twelve months ago, local independent charity Support Cambodia was preparing to raise funds to provide 20 bikes for children in rural Cambodia to access secondary education. In fact, a phenomenal total of £2000 was raised at the charity’s Annual Plant Sale in North Walsham, enabling nearly 50 children from the poorest families to benefit in this way.

In addition to the usual ‘100s of plants at low prices’, there will be Bake, Produce and Craft Stalls and a Cafe serving drinks and hot food.

Whatever the weather, it’s a great recipe for an enjoyable morning out… and you could be helping to give another young person like Soun Srey Nat the chance of a bright future. Every penny raised at the Plant Sale will go to the Bikes Fund as Support Cambodia takes no administration costs from charitable donations.

Local businesses who have confirmed their support for the event include Blooming Crates, Bawdeswell Garden Centre, Creake Nursery,, Hill Cottage Nursery, Jelly Cottage Nursery, Three Ways Nursery, West Acre Gardens, Woodgate Nursery, J.B Postle & Son, M.F. Barnwell & Sons, Showcase Gallery North Walsham

One of them is Soun Srey Net (pictured), an exceptionally bright 14 year-old who wants to be a doctor. Her Support Cambodia bike now enables her to attend the local high school from where she will have the chance to qualify for medical school. At a cost of $50 (about £42) per bike, it’s a no-brainer! Thanks to all who helped.

The Support Cambodia Plant Sale is at Sacred Heart Catholic Hall, Norwich Road, North Walsham [opposite Paston College] on Saturday 18 May, strict 9am start. Car parking available.

On Saturday 18 May, Support Cambodia are doing it all again - this time the target is £1200 to provide bikes for another 30 students. The event, now in its 8th year is at the Catholic Hall, Norwich Road, North Walsham from 9am – 1pm.

Further information:

www.supportcambodia.org.uk

As last year, Norfolk plant growers and nurseries have very generously agreed to support the sale by donating quality plants and several other local businesses have also offered services and goods.

WALSHAM WARRIORS BADMINTON CLUB

This season has been an incredible journey for the Walsham Warriors!

The Mixed Team won their first ever match and ran others close to prove they can already stand up to the vastly more experienced teams in the league. With some great partnerships developing there was definite progress, which is really rewarding, the loss of a couple of female players hit hard, but those who came in played really well, in only the second season for this team.

Our Men’s 2nd Team held their own and fought hard in a Division becoming ever increasingly difficult. All of their players improved and despite a few frustrating performances, they showed great promise! With a little more experience and practice in partnerships, they will soon be rising up the ranks.

The Warriors Men’s 1st Team exploded out of the blocks, riding at the top of the league for most of the season, only to suffer a couple of rough defeats where they just couldn’t get it together. Finishing the season in 2nd place, they gain promotion to Division 3, but missed out on the winners’ trophy. Next season is going to be a real test to see how much they have improved!

However, the undoubted stars of this season were our newly formed Ladies Team. Despite a difficult start, opponents rearranging matches, several injuries and struggling to find enough players at times, they turned heavy losses at the beginning into huge victories by the end of the season. Teams that beat them with room to spare before Christmas were flattened by our Amazon Warriors in the new year!

Each and every player in our League Teams played their part and fought hard, deserving high praise and thanks from the Club, but also our Club players have earned a mention as without them turning up every week our Club could not continue. Thank you to everyone who has played and supported us this year! Special thanks to our generous kit sponsor Folik Choudhury, owner of Labone Indian Restaurants in North Walsham & Sheringham! Also thank you to North Walsham Sports Centre, now run by Everyone Active and managed by James Hudson, for hosting our Club and giving us a great venue!

The Warriors Club Nights continue right through the year, on a Wednesday night, 8-10pm at North Walsham Sports Centre, We welcome anyone of club/league standard, or anyone who aspires to be! We use real Feather Shuttlecocks and Club Night is just £5 per person for the whole session.

Taster session helps girls get into golf

Girls are getting ready to ‘rock up’ at a seaside golf course to get a taste of the sport.

Mundesley is among a range of courses taking part in the nationwide Girls Golf Rocks initiative.

Fretwell added “As an ex-PE teacher, my aim has always been to encourage girls of all ages to adopt a positive attitude towards being active and skilful through sport. I am very keen to support this scheme and aim to get many more girls playing locally.”

It is aimed at getting girls aged five to 18 to try golf, through friendly, fun sessions. A free two-hour taster session on4 May from 10am to noon is followed by six weekly one-hour sessions on a course costing £35. Its ‘graduates’ get a goody bag and 9-iron club to help them continue to enjoy the game.

Mundesley pro Ryan Pudney, who will run the classes, said “Girls Golf Rocks is an excellent way of showing girls this is a sport that is cool and they can take part in and enjoy.

“We will have fun, try out all aspects of golf, and include social time so the girls also make new friends.

“Norfolk has had some excellent girl golfers in recent years including Amber Ratcliffe and Amelia Williamson from Cromer who are

Braces from Chris Gould, Kevin Cardy and Tim Dawson helped LCC Lobsters beat NW Echoes 7-3 with Gould taken the distance by John Chapman.
