Dementia Week

Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers helped NNUH launch a community knitting project to make a beautiful display using crocheted and knitted forget-me-not flowers to mark Dementia Action Week 2019 at the NNUH Dementia Information and Advice Fayre on Monday 13 May.

Cromer Hospital was invited to join the project and a number of staff and their relatives, patients, Overstrand Poppylanders and NorseCare North Walsham contributed allowing Cromer to also have their own piece of artwork which is now on display in the main entrance.

Thank you to everyone who supported this worthwhile project, I think the result is lovely, what a big difference all your little flowers have made.

Pirates Praise Party

The Salvation Army are calling all 6-10 year olds to a special Pirates Praise Party at their Hall Lane base on Saturday 22 June.

With a guest appearance by pirate 'Captain Fearless', the morning will feature face painting, a ball pool, treasure hunt, craft, songs, prizes, and more.

Running from 10am until 12noon on the Saturday morning, the event is entirely free, including refreshments of squash and ice cream.

“We want to offer young children in our community a chance to have a fun morning, maybe while their parents go shopping” said Major Richard Durrant of the Corps, “and this is a little way of us saying thank you for all the support given to us through our charity shop and more”. “The Corps runs a children’s club for 6-10 year olds on a Monday from 4.30pm - 5.30pm, but this will be a little bit extra special”.

The Army also provides activities for all ages during the week at its hall and for more details please contact Richard on 01692 652263 or email richard.durrant@salvationarmy.org.uk.

Back from the brink!

There were always so many people to please, producers, directors, set designers and actors all had to be kept happy. Negotiating contracts and working with the various unions all made life complicated to in the 1970s Diana decided to become an agent specifically for designers which enabled her to match the right person with the right production and make sure that they were treated fairly.

At the beginning of the year it looked as if the North Walsham and District Probus Club was doomed to for closure, but, thanks to some creative thinking by the committee the future of the club is set fair.

Following coffee and the brief business part of the meeting members sat back and were treated to a fascinating talk by Diana Thurley entitled ‘Behind the Scenes as a Costume Designer’.

It was obvious that Diana loved her work and flourished on the stress and pressure and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of her talk.

At the age of five Diana was taken to see ’Goody Two Shoes’ and that was the beginning of her journey into design. She studied drama and design at Bristol Old Vic and later gained an Arts Council Scholarship which meant getting involved in all aspects of design including making scenery. Diana really wanted to get into television and took a job with ABC because of their reputation for producing drama. Ultimately she became head of department with a team of 70 designers working for her. Diana worked with many famous and interesting people who all had their own individual ways in including Tommy Cooper who would not wear green, this made things very tricky when he was cast in Robin Hood!

CROMER

If you would like to join Probus you can be assured of a warm welcome. We meet on 4th Wednesday of the month at 10am in the Jubilee Room at North Walsham Community Centre.

Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day will be celebrated this year for the first time in North Walsham and will incorporate a commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of D Day. The event takes place on Saturday 29 June and will be held at the Atrium from 10am to 5pm.

Call Steve on 01263 511626

An exhibition of military artefacts will take place in both the restaurant area and the gallery of the Atrium. The local Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps cadets will also take part with their displays.

www.cromergaragedoors.co.uk

At 2pm the focus will be in the theatre with the Head Boy and Head Girl reading the poem ‘Normandy’ by Cyril Crain and the reading of the speech of General Eisenhower at the start of Operation Overlord.

Also a competition has been taking place since Easter between the pupils of the High School and the local cadet organisations putting to paper their thoughts on the possible threat facing the UK Armed Forces over the next 5 years. Sainsburys Supermarket in the town has given a monetary prize to the winner and runner up. After reading the winning entries on the stage the prizes will be presented by Air Commodore Kevin Pellatt the Armed Forces Commissioner in Norfolk.

After the readings the film ‘Storming Juno’ which is about the D Day landings will be screened free of charge to the public. This free screening is possible because of a grant handed to the North Walsham Branch of the Royal British Legion by the Community Shop in the town.

Refreshments will also be available to the public from 10am. Please support this event which has been registered with the Ministry of Defence.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Children’s charity invites people across Norfolk to take a break and help

Happisburgh Lifeboat volunteers were called to the aid of an injured female on the beach at Happisburgh on Bank Holiday Monday 27 May.

UK-wide children’s charity Action Medical Research is delighted to announce the return of its annual Cream Teas campaign.

People across Norfolk are invited to take a break, have a brew and help our fight for tiny lives.

Launched nationally in 2014, the initiative has so far helped raise more than £190,000 to fund ground-breaking medical research to help sick babies and children.

“We are delighted to get this year’s fundraiser underway across the UK” says Action’s Chief Cream Tea Coordinator Gina Campbell. “We’re encouraging people to take time out of their busy lives and enjoy a delicious cream team with their friends, family or work colleagues.

The Station’s deputy launching authority Bob Mann was alerted at 10am by the UK Coastguard, and informed that a female was on the beach injured. The Coastguard team requested evacuation by lifeboat due to the fact that she was below the old Coast Watch lookout with no vehicular access. The station volunteers were paged and the station’s D Class ‘Russell Pickering’ with Tim Grimmer and Jake Munday as Helm and Martin Gibbs and Sean Thurston as crew were launched to her aid.

Ms Campbell explains “By ordering your cream teas you can help us raise funds for research that could help families across the country.”

How to order: To book your cream teas, visit creamteas.action.org.uk Boxes cost £6.50 (with a minimum order of 10) and include: 2 x classic plain scones (Gluten free available) Rodda's Cornish clotted cream 40g 2 x Tiptree strawberry preserve (28g - each) Yorkshire tea Knife and serviette

On arrival the crew worked with the Coastguard team who had walked along the beach; they were joined by the paramedic to package the patient before transporting her back to station by lifeboat. Then on arrival back at station they floated ‘Russell Pickering’ back on to her carriage and returned to the boathouse to transfer the patient to the awaiting ambulance before being transported to hospital for ongoing treatment. The crew made ‘Russell Pickering’ ready for service at 11.30am.

The deadline for orders is midday on 14 June, with deliveries direct to your door on Thursday 27 June.

Tim Grimmer said “It is always good to work with other emergency services and help towards the care of the patient. If you are in trouble on the beach or sea then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard for help”.

All Aboard for the Air Ambulance!

On Sunday 16 June the North Norfolk Model Engineering Club (NNMEC) will be providing rides on the Miniature Railway at Holt Station 11am - 4pm in support of the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

North Walsham resident Rosalie Osborne Gibb will once again be holding an Art Exhibition at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Cley-Next-the-Sea, from Wednesday 26 June to Tuesday 9 July from 10am to 5pm daily.

Rosalie’s love of the coast and countryside shines through her diverse art, from sea and landscapes to sunrises, sunsets, flora and fauna, and from delicate and detailed water colours to bright, bold acrylics and beautiful soft pastels, often incorporating creative techniques.

In addition there will be a cake stall, with delicious goodies, so you can sit in the picnic area and watch the trains go by all helping to raise money for this worthy cause, supporting the essential service they provide across the county.

The NNMEC has been bringing like-minded miniature engineers together for 23 years, although the miniature railway has only been at Holt for 15! During the school summer holidays it is open on Sundays and Thursday afternoons 12noon - 4pm. Find us opposite the Marriot Museum at Holt Station.

Sunrise at Overstrand In addition to a wide range of original artwork, Rosalie will also have signed limited edition prints, greetings cards, bone china mugs and coasters depicting a selection of her paintings.

The Club’s members have a broad range of interests- not everyone is locomotive based. Some have an interest in model boats, traction engines, static engines, clocks and all things mechanical. The club meets on the first Friday of the month at High Kelling Village Hall at 7.30pm. New members welcome, drop us an email northnorfolkengineeringcl@gmail.com or take a look on our Facebook page.

Admission to the exhibition is free.

Rosalie will also be holding a one-day Art Exhibition at Hunter’s Yard, Horsefen Road, Ludham, from 10am to 4pm, to coincide with Ludham Open Gardens.

Hope to see you at our Charity Day on Sunday 16 June.

What about the Children? Shared parenting after devorce Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Coping with your own emotions during a break up is hard enough, let alone the opinions, and sometimes interference of those around you. The bigger and likely more troubling question

is: how do you make the separation easier on your children? So often separating parents begin to think of the children as ‘theirs’ – belonging to them and denying the important relationship between the child(ren) and the other parent.

Clearly children do not have the same insight or understanding into the reasons for the break-up, but if they are regularly surrounded by conflict, it is not uncommon for them to feel they are in some way implicated or responsible for it. Seeing the two people they love and need most, separate, can have a life-long effect on a child’s mental wellbeing, depending on how it is handled by their parents.

Children can’t be expected to ‘choose’ which parent to live with and, assuming that both the mother and father are fit to parent, what happens next? Although it may seem inconceivable at the time, shared parenting arrangements where children spend equal amounts of time with both parents is an option worth considering.

For shared parenting to work, you and your ex-partner will need to live within a reasonable distance of one another so that your children can attend the same school, continue friendships and maintain contact with other family members, causing the least amount of disruption to their lives as possible. Each parent then shares responsibilities which may

include school runs, attending after-school activities, appointments or helping with homework and so on.

Often, after a break-up, children remain living with one parent and have limited contact with the other. This level of contact can feel transient and insufficient. With a shared parenting arrangement, both parents retain equal status and the children benefit from the routine and stability of having both parents fully involved in their lives.

If you’re interested in a shared parenting arrangement, it’s worth exploring further with your solicitor or putting forward for consideration if you’re attending mediation.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station looked back at 2018 with the Awards and Dinner Dance held at Woodland Holiday Park Trimingham on Saturday 18 May.

Over 75 people attended the dinner dance. After the meal the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2018 before the band ‘The Invisible Band’ took to the stage. The evening raised £750, through the raffle and auction, for the RNLI who depends on these donations to carry on with our role of saving lives.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

other and we do have copies of this available if you are interested. As cats often come into care because there is conflict, or too many cats in the household, we feel it is better to be wise before the event rather than having the heartbreak of handing one of your cats into care.

We are happy to advise that we raised £783.77 at the Spring Sale mentioned last time. We are now making plans to hold a Hog Roast (with vegetarian option) at Dilham on 21 July. This event has always proved popular among our cat loving friends as they also have the opportunity to see some of the cats in care. Because it is as much a social event as a fund raising one, the cost of tickets (which must be purchased prior to the event) is still £10 and can be obtained by ringing 01692 535858 or e-mail to northwalshamcp@gmail.com.

Our volunteers will once again be making the event possible by helping behind the scenes or on the day. We are always pleased to hear from anyone interested in volunteering, not only at these events, but also with cat care and all other aspects needed to ensure the branch runs smoothly. If you are interested, please either give us a call or complete the contact form from our branch website.

Prince Rufus, lovely friendly boy, whose owner had too many cats

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

At this time of year, we get many calls from people looking to give a home to a cat or kitten. In some instances, people already have other cats in their household and we do ask them to think carefully about getting another one. Apart from the daily costs of giving a cat a home, which include food, cat litter and veterinary bills for routine treatments, they need to consider the bigger bills which can occur unexpectedly and how they will pay for them. As individual cats like to have their own space, another important factor is whether there is enough room in their home to allow for this. If there is another cat in the household, they need to consider how a new “friend” will affect them. Having lived with other cats in the past does not necessarily mean that they will be happy having a new companion. If, having taken these points into consideration, they decide to go ahead and get another cat, they will need to ensure they are introduced gradually and that each cat has its own space. Cats Protection does have a leaflet outlining the best way of introducing cats to each

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

The last three Autumn juveniles have now been released into the wild.

Having a good start hopefully means that they will mature into breeding adults, helping keep this endearing species from extinction.

PROVIDING FRIENDLY, EXPERIENCED &

Now is the time of year when the first litters will be being born. Hoglets born now have more chance of gaining weigh and maturing enough to survive their first winter. Normal family size is four to six but on average a female manages to rear only about three of her offspring to independence.

‘I never knew so much activity was going on in the town’ said one impressed local resident. A poetry competition, entitled ‘North Walsham and Me’, was launched – closing date is midnight on 14 June 2019. Prizes will be awarded in two categories : 17+ and 16 years and under.

These personal reflections, maximum 3 poems of up to 30 lines per poem, will feed into a ‘community conversation’ about the future of the town.

This conversation began at the Big Bash event when local people were asked their views on the town – What is good about North Walsham, what could be better, what can we do together to bring about change?

North Walsham Big Bash Poetry Competition

In conjunction with the Big Bash event, held in North Walsham, there is a Poetry Competition, with prizes of poetry books for the winners and a certificate. In addition, the poems that are shortlisted will be included in a simple anthology. Finally, the winning poets will be invited to read their poems at North Walsham Library (or have someone else read them). Selected poems will be displayed in the window of the community shop in North Walsham and in North Walsham Library.

‘It was great to see everyone in the Community Centre

Here are the rules:

engaged in really useful conversations and especially to see the participation of so many younger people too’, said Bob Wright (North Walsham Community Shop)

The results of this ‘community conversation’ will help determine whether the town will benefit from developing a ‘community hub’, where local people can meet informally in relaxed surroundings to talk; share ideas; plan and undertake activities and gain access to information and support. An anthology of some of the entries to the Poetry Competition and the ideas emerging from the ‘community conversation’ will be published later in the year.

Entries to the poetry completion should be sent to welsh1943@sky.com. Closing date is midnight on 14 June 2019.

Malaga meets Millfield - Spanish Exchange

Twelve Year 6 pupils from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham took part in the first ever Spanish exchange project which was funded by Eramus (an EU grant).

The 12 pupils and three teachers visited Malaga for five days, where they experienced Spanish school life.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

In school the children took part in an array of activities which included getting to know their peers and learned a lot about the Andalusian culture and history. They visited various sites in Malaga, Nerja and Cordoba. Their visit even made the local newspaper!

The children of Millfield then warmly welcomed the Spanish students last month and had a fun filled week which included an array of activities starting with mosaic tile making and orienteering.

Then after school the children and staff introduced the Spanish students to some ‘traditional’ Britishness with a game of cricket and football rounders followed by a spectacular Afternoon Tea, which was kindly organised and baked by Mrs Bane and her mum.

On Wednesday the children then explored the area with a trip to Norwich Castle and on Thursday a trip to Cromer to enjoy the beach and some fish and chips!

Mr Smith the International schools co-ordinator who organised the exchange said “It’s been brilliant to see the English and Spanish students experience life in each other’s cultures and seeing what they have in common and embracing the differences.”

Benefits tribunal waiting times increase again in Norwich, local MP discovers

TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN AT A FRACTION OF THE COST

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, calls the 6 month average waits a “denial of justice”.

FOR FREE EXPERT ADVICE CALL:01362 421594

Norman Lamb said that “the system is imposing an intolerable financial pressure” on people forced to wait an average of 6 months for benefits appeals cases, as latest data showed waiting times are increasing.

Mobile: 07799655397

www.kitchenfrontsofnorfolk.co.uk All work guaranteed

The average waiting time for ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) claimants at tribunal was 26 weeks in October to December 2018 – an increase of 4 weeks compared to the figures covering July to September 2018. This was the longest average waiting time since at least April 2015.

Tel T el 01692 0169 403060

That means that if an ESA claimant’s case was received by the courts on 1 January, they wouldn’t receive a final decision until the last week of June.

For other claimants, the picture slightly improved but overall remains poor. The average waiting time for PIP (Personal Independence Payment) claimants at tribunal was 25 weeks, according to figures released covering October to December 2018. That means the average wait has fallen by 1 week compared to the figures covering July to September 2018. But claimants still have to wait nearly 6 months for their appeal to be heard.

When decisions are finally made, they strongly favour of the claimant : 7 out of 10 PIP and ESA claimants received a decision in their favour, demonstrating that many original decisions are wrong. Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk and former social care minister, uncovered the figures. He called on the Government to take action to halt the rise in average waiting times. He has received assurances from the Minister responsible for the courts that judicial appointments are being made in an attempt to reduce waiting times.

Local Artist Carole Wilshaw is featured in First Floor Gallery

North Norfolk District Council is hosting an exhibition by Norfolk calligraphist Carole Wilshaw, with her latest work on display at its Cromer office. Carole initially trained in Graphic Design at the Lanchester Polytechnic in Coventry in the 1960s/70s but her interest in calligraphy did not start until several years later when she learnt the basic rules of calligraphy and lettering in 1984 under the tutorage of David Gould, the founder member of the North West Calligraphy Association. In 1993 Carole went on to become a tutor in Adult Community Education teaching calligraphy at evening classes, and at weekend workshops and summer play schemes for children. During this time she was studying for her Certificate in Education. Once qualified she taught calligraphy to adults for fifteen years at local further education colleges on the Wirral. Calligraphy itself can be created in many forms - from just letters or a script set out on a page to a highly decorated or illustrated piece of work to a three-dimensional style which is achieved through the use of dip pens. The former style is the one that her latest collection focuses on. Now retired and living in Norfolk she is a member of Norfolk Scribes, the group that allows her to work on such projects as her featured exhibition, “Pillars of Strength”. In this collection Carole mostly uses Designers Gouache for the lettering; often working on various backgrounds of tissue paper, Japanese silk paper or marbled papers and her work is usually decorated or illustrated. You can see Pillars of Strength on display at the Council offices in Cromer Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm.

Future of key North Walsham building to be considered

The future of a key building in the centre of North Walsham, which attracted expressions of interest from pub chain JD Wetherspoon and is owned by North Norfolk District Council, will be reviewed and all possible future options identified.

The former Town Council offices on New Road have been the subject of interest from the company since 2014, but no final contract has ever been signed, despite North Norfolk District Council’s best efforts.

The new Cabinet at North Norfolk District Council, chosen at a Full Council meeting on 15 May following the Local Elections on 2 May, has decided to look again at what the building could be used for.

Cllr Virginia Gay, Cabinet member for Culture and Wellbeing, and ward member for North Walsham Market Cross, said "This is an important

Cromer Soapbox Derby 2019

sunday 11 august - racing from 1pm The race is on with this year’s Cromer Soapbox Derby already attracting entries from as far afield as Nottingham, Leicestershire and Bedfordshire and within the county of Norfolk from North Walsham, Norwich, Hunstanton and Thetford.

Organisers are delighted with the response and still expect to receive more entries before the closing date 3 August and, as with last year’s event, a few late arrivals on the day.

Race organisers are hoping for a large local entry in this 50th year of Cromer Carnival with a few perhaps of the entries building soapboxes that reflect the history of the carnival.

Event scrutineers say that they are happy to accept entries on the day as long as they arrive sharp at 11.30am when the scrutineering opens

building at the entrance to our attractive Market. It's an absolutely crucial asset for North Norfolk. We want the best result for our town, which has great potential to become a significant destination, and its people. But we have an obligation to protect the interests of all North Norfolk's council taxpayers and ensure that they receive best value for their money. The Wetherspoon question has hung over us for far too long and that hasn't been fair on anyone. We are concerned for the future of this building and we will look at all possible options to make sure that it no longer stands empty and unused. North Walsham is an increasingly vibrant community, a great place to live, work and study, and this building needs to play an important part into the future.”

An options appraisal for the building will be brought to a future meeting of the Cabinet.

so there is time to process them and make sure everything is in order.

This year’s event has gained the continued support from last year’s sponsors GTK ‘A Volex Company’ based in Basingstoke, Hampshire and Westcotec Traffic Safety Systems based in Dereham, both from the electronics industry. Both sponsors are expected to enter soapboxes into the event adding a truly international feel to the race.

Entry forms are available from CTIS Ltd 22 Holt Road Cromer or online at www.cromercarnival.co.uk Entries close

on 3 August but late entries could be accepted on the day if they arrive for the scrutineering at 11.30am. Racing starts at 1pm with the 3 classes racing to become the fastest soapbox of the day. Classes are 10 – 15 years, 16 -18 years and Adult.

There will be prizes for the fastest time in each class, with the fastest soapbox also winning the Malcolm McGreadie Shield, which the winner will hold for the year. There is also a Concourse de Elegance competition with winners in each class being judged on the design of their soapbox and the driver’s costume. The Sporting Car Club of Norfolk will be providing the timing and scrutineering for the event and are planning to bring along a number of cars for a static display.

District Councillors's Report

This is the first of regular updates on the work and plans of your North Walsham District Councillors. First, a huge thank you to all those who voted for us to represent the people of North Walsham at the District Council.

It is a great honour to act on your behalf and a responsibility which we do not take lightly. For those who cast their votes elsewhere or who chose not to vote, please be assured that our aim is to do our best for all North Walsham residents regardless of their political leanings. The first few weeks in a new administration are all about training and retraining in such things as planning and licensing law, getting to know Officers and gaining an understanding in how local government works. After that it’s down to business.

There are a range of issues facing the town not least of which is the introduction of a new local plan that will set out the town’s development for the next 20 years. North Norfolk District Council has been tasked by

central government to make land available to meet the projected growth in population in the District.

It has been proposed that North Walsham supplies sufficient land for up to 2000 new homes, with accompanying employment land to support this growth. The new plan is in draft format and is currently out for consultation.

Drop in events have been held in the community centre. The Town Council has hosted a consultation event.

The draft plan for North Walsham can accessed at https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/ tasks/planning-policy/document-library/ .

We would urge all residents to add their views to the on-line consultation portal at https://consult.north-norfolk.gov.uk/portal/ Comments must be included by 19th June.

Your local Councillors believe that the draft plan is not yet strong enough with respect to our town. We shall be arguing for an increased provision of essential services and amenities, improved environmental

design criteria and assurance about a new road connecting Norwich Road, Cromer Road and onwards to the industrial estate.

Residents may have noticed that a press statement went out from the District Council last week regarding the proposal from the JD Wetherspoon pub chain to buy the old Town Council building in New Rd and develop the site as a public house.

Wetherspoons first expressed an interest in buying the site in the summer of 2014. However, no final contract has ever been signed despite the best efforts of the District Council over nearly 5 years to bring this about. It was therefore felt that ample opportunity had been given for Wetherspoons to buy and that it was time to reassess how this historic building in a prominent location in the town can be brought back into use. A review is currently underway and the outcome will be made public.

Aylsham Chess Club Complete their Maiden Season The two Aylsham Chess Club teams have now completed their first season in the Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) league. The Spitfires ended their season ‘safely’ in fifth place (out of nine teams) in Division 2. The Harriers also ended in fifth place (out of ten teams) in Division 3. Aylsham’s top scoring player was Rupert Martin who scored 11.5 points (4.5 in Division 2 and 7 in Division 3).

forward to next season with eager anticipation.” Over the next few months players will be completing their Club Championship games, taking part in internal club competitions and playing friendly games. The 2019-20 season starts in the autumn. Before then, Aylsham Chess Club will be undertaking a recruitment drive. This includes running stands at an Aylsham Farmers’ Market and The Aylsham Show. It is hoped that Aylsham will be able to attract sufficient players to field 3 promotion-challenging teams in the 2019-20 season (one in Division 2 and two in Division 3). Anyone interested in playing competitive chess can find out more at one of the Aylsham Chess Club stands or by contacting the club directly. Aylsham Chess Club meets in the upstairs

Bob Grindrod (Aylsham Chess Club Chair) commented “We have had a remarkable first season. Starting with only 5 members, we have now more than trebled our membership and have held our own in the hard-fought Norfolk leagues. The speed of development of our newer players has been impressive to see. We are grateful that we have found wonderful and kind hosts at the Aylsham Ex-Service and Social Club, which has been universally praised by all of our visiting opponents. The icing on our cake was a win in the East Anglian Chess Union Team 500 tournament - our first trophy! We all look

Police warning after mobile phone thefts

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after four incidents of mobile phone theft in Norfolk and Suffolk by men using distraction techniques. In all incidents the men suspected of being involved were seen leaving the area in a dark coloured vehicle, possibly a BMW or a Mercedes. Members of the public are reminded of the below advice in order to prevent becoming a victim of distraction theft: • Busy, public areas such as shopping centers and public transport are popular places for distraction or pickpocket offences where we may be distracted or close contact with others is normal. Be alert to your surroundings. • Keep your mobile phone hidden from view such as in an inside pocket (not hanging out of a back pocket) or inside a closed bag. • Think about when you use your phone and who is around you. • Don’t leave your phone unattended in public places

Anyone with any information should contact the Breckland Engagement Officer, PC Paula Gilluley on 101 or by email at Paula.gilluley@norfolk.pnn.police.uk. .

TREK 24 for EAAA

The Vikings rounded off their season at ‘Norfolk's Big Rugby Weekend’ by winning the Norfolk Senior Cup for the sixth successive year, overwhelming Norwich, who had finished fourth in the League below them (London 2 NE), 88 - 8.

East Anglia Air Ambulance are delighted to launch a brand new fundraising event - TREK 24 - a 24 mile or 24k long trek across the North Norfolk Coast - and are looking for teams and individuals who are ready to step up and take on this challenge for our life-saving charity!

Take part in either a 24k route which starts in Cley, or sign up to the ultimate 24 mile challenge starting just south of West Runton, and finishing at the beautiful grounds of Holkham Hall. There will be uplift stations along the way with refreshment stops and cheering squads to keep you refuelled and motivated!

There was success too for other North Walsham sides.

The Raiders were in the Intermediate Cup, including teams from the League above them and, having beaten one such side West Norfolk Ist XV in the semis, they did it again in the Final defeating Holt 1st XV 21 -14. Holt have just won promotion into London 2 NE.

The challenge has been launched as part of our Mission 24/7 campaign. We need to become a 24/7 service to be there for up to 600 more patients every year, but we need to raise an additional £1m annually and have launched Trek 24 to help us work towards achieving this annual target.

The Under 14s and 16s - the latter unbeaten in 2018 -19 - both won their Norfolk Cups with the under 15s losing to Wymondham in their Final.

24km route - tickets cost £30, with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £200 per person

24 mile route - tickets cost £35 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £250 per person

These results capped a remarkable season for the Club. The Vikings rose from sixth to third in London One North winning eight more games (22) than in 2017-18. Losing only to the teams above them they finished six points behind second placed Colchester but a massive 29 ahead of fourth placed Haberdashers. "I cannot praise the players enough," commented Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters (pictured). "Their ethos of team before individual, hard work and continuous improvement is what you want as a Coach and the senior players showed true leadership of what is still a young side."

Talented gymnast Olivia Shingles wins County and Regional Championships

Back in April Norfolk hosted the County Grades Gymnastics Championships with the three medalists going forward to represent the county and their respective clubs at the Regional finals in Ipswich on 19 May.

Having won Gold to become Norfolk champion Olivia Shingles, aged 13 from North Walsham Gymnastics Club, competed against the medalists from the other counties in the East of England. This was the hardest regional grade possible for Olivia based on her age, however she was very focused and determined and put in solid performances on all the apparatus. After a nervous wait the results were announced and to the delight of her coach and watching supporters Oliva came first to win the gold medal and trophy. It was an amazing achievement to be able to complete the double and also be crowned Regional champion at Grade 1.

Since the age of 5 Olivia has been committed to her gymnastics and over the years has won a host of medals and trophies at Club, County and Regional

competitions. When competing she always puts in complex and wellpolished performances to a very high standard, making both club and her family very proud.

“Olivia has put in many long hours of training with her coach and this latest achievement is credit to all the hard work, dedication and time spend training” her dad Matt Shingles said. “Watching her compete is such a nerve-racking experience but she is always very focussed and professional and we are all so proud of her. Even after all these years of watching her perform it still amazes me how she can jump, spin, cartwheel and somersault on the beam yet still manage to land on the 10cm wide piece of wood!”

The next round of competitions are the Levels in September, so hopefully more success on the way. This will include even more challenging routines to practice during training with head coach Alexis Thurston at the clubs gymnastic centre based in North Walsham.
