Home - 01692 500169 Mobile - 07899 911 035
Next year John will have been a Rotarian for 50 years, always willing to help those in need, both in the local community and abroad. He is an example of our Motto ‘Service above Self’. John has been a President four times and a Secretary for many years, and many committees, too many to list – a well-deserved award.

Trisha Williams was also awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship with Sapphire. This prestigious award was to thank Trisha for her dedication to Rotary. Rarely missing a meeting, even though her health has seriously affected her mobility, Trisha contributes to the Club with her sharp mind, cheerful company and that (all important) Rotary knowledge.
Rotary in North Walsham is grateful to have such dedicated members. Anyone who would like to have an early evening meal with us, our treat, and see what a friendly group we are, and what we do please give John Watts a call on 01692 405119.

Landlord update: Changes to Landlord and Agents Fees From 1 June 2019 all new tenancies must comply with the Tenant Fees Act 2019 (the 'Act'). Existing tenancies should also be compliant with the Act by 31 May 2020, or will be considered in breach. The Act is intended to limit the payments landlords and agents can charge tenants with residential tenancies, including Assured Shorthold Tenancies, student accommodation and licences to occupy.
The Act means that landlords and agents can only charge specific "Permitted Payments:
• Rent: The first year's rent must be in equal instalments. Any rent review clause within the first year of the tenancy must allow amendment up and down.
• Security Deposit: This remains broadly the same except that the amount chargeable will be capped. If the tenancy's total annual rent is less than £50,000, the maximum deposit that can be charged is five weeks' rent. A maximum of six weeks' rent can be charged for annual rents above £50,000.
• Holding Deposit: A landlord can still require a holding deposit, but this will be capped at one week's rent. A landlord cannot obtain more than one deposit for the same
property and it must be refunded within seven days of entering into the tenancy agreement or deciding not to proceed.
• Alteration Fee: If a tenant requests an alteration to the lease the landlord can charge up to £50, plus any reasonable costs, if evidenced.
• Tenant's early Termination: If a tenant requests to end the tenancy early, either before the end of the fixed term or end of its notice period, the landlord can require a tenant to continue paying the rent until the original termination date, but cannot ask for it to be paid in a lump sum. The landlord can charge any reasonable costs incurred in arranging for a tenant leaving early. If a new tenant is found, the rent is only payable up to the start of the new tenancy.
• Bills: The landlord can ask a tenant to pay utility, communication and council tax bills direct to the supplier or to themselves to be paid on the tenant's behalf. If payment is made through the landlord, they cannot charge any amount over the bill amount.
If the landlord charges a cost other than a Permitted Payment, once the Act comes into force, it may be a civil offence with a financial penalty of up to £5,000. If another breach is committed within 5 years the landlord will have committed a criminal offence with an unlimited fine.
• Charges for Late Payment: If the landlord wishes to charge for late payment it must set this out in the tenancy agreement. No fixed penalties can be charged, and interest can only be charged if rent is overdue by 14 days or more and at a rate no higher than 3% above the Bank of England's base rate.
• Replacement of Keys: The landlord must
set out in the tenancy agreement details of the payments that will be charged for replacement keys. The tenant can only be required to pay reasonable costs for replacement of keys and this must be evidenced by the landlord. The Act means that landlords and agents will newly be responsible for many of the costs involved with setting up, renewing and ending a tenancy. They will have to pay fees such as those relating to creating an inventory, professional cleaning and legal fees.

Mundesley on Show
Celebrate summer with Mundesley on Show – seven August evenings of varied entertainment, from cabaret to gang show, Ceilidh to 1940s dance, Classical Soiree to a Punk pop concert and even a Murder Mystery to tax those ‘little grey cells’, Mundesley on Show offers something for everyone, all delivered by local North Norfolk performers. Opening Mundesley on Show with ‘Come to the Cabaret’ is Sheringham musician Paul Thompson, who is launching his first album, and with friends brings a night of music, laughter and poetry as our audience tuck into a light supper (£15). A slower pace follows as our audience chill out with a glass of wine and a bite to eat to favourite classical (and contemporary) sounds with the wonderful Norwich based Cordes Strings Quartet (£12). Another night brings the challenge of unravelling the tangled web of lies and deceit and solve the Mundesley on Show Awards Ceremony Murder Mystery performed by North Norfolk's Dreamstone Productions strolling players often seen on the Poppyline steam railway (£15). "You dance love, and you dance joy, and you dance dreams"... said Gene Kelly. Mundesley on Show winds back the years with a 1940s dance with the great Norfolk vocalist Sarah Mai and her band, the
Hog Roast on Sunday 21 July at Mill Cottage, Mill Road, Dilham in aid of
Rhythm Riots. Sarah has performed at prestigious venues throughout the UK including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Aiming to offer something for everyone, for those a little more reticent Trotters Bottom Ceilidh will get even the most reticent dancers strutting their stuff. Believing that Mundesley on Show must provide a mix of entertainment for all tastes and provide opportunity, on one night Mundesley 1st Air Scouts perform their Gang Show and on another a punk pop concert. Not only is the Gang Show great family fun but a fundraiser towards a climbing wall and a Ghana trip for Mundesley 1st Air Scouts. In contrast Mundesley on Show closes with the vibrant performances of local punk pop bands Couch, Adventures By Post and Foreign Bier.
Mundesley on Show is a North Norfolk community volunteer enterprise, giving opportunity to North Norfolk performers, providing summer enjoyment to North Norfolk residents and tourists, and (hopefully)

In an effort to provide something for everyone there will also be classic cars, gun dog display, live band, choir, detectorists, static model aircraft display and even belly dancing.
Michael Tyler, who forms part of an organising committee for this Fun Day, says “We have tried to cater for everyone and invite visitors to enjoy a few leisurely hours in our picturesque village just a mile or two inland from the seaside resort of Mundesley supporting a worthy cause”.
A visitors’ programme will include a map identifying the locations of the amazing scarecrows and the beautiful gardens as one meanders around the village. There is an opportunity to attend a Beekeeping Demonstration run by a Master Beekeeper (12pm til 4pm) and to take part in a children’s treasure trail.

Oddfellows cash boosts wellbeing garden
A community garden project which helps people’s wellbeing blossom has been given a boost by a cash donation from a caring charity.
Community Roots is a space in Great Yarmouth, run by mental health charity Mind, which enables people to enjoy gardening, as well as a range of related skills and activities.
It relies on community fundraising, and the latest is a ÂŁ500 gift from a local branch of the Oddfellows, a long-standing friendly society which combines a range of member benefits, with social meetings, and supporting good causes.

Angie Batson of the Oddfellows presents a £500 donation to Mind’s Rachel Walsh at the Community Roots garden in Great Yarmouth.
The money was handed over, during national Mental Health Awareness Week, by Angie Batson, development officer at the Oddfellows Trafalgar Lodge based at North Walsham.

It was received by Mind fundraising and communications manager Rachel Walsh, who said: “We are really grateful for the Oddfellows’ donation, as schemes like Community Roots rely on local funding.
The garden includes formal and wild areas, vegetable plots, greenhouses, willow sculptures, and even spaces for bird watching, crafts, yoga and mindful walking around a butterfly-shaped labyrinth.

Mrs Batson said “Places like this are important for people, including those dealing with mental health issues, wanting to find peace, relaxation, friendship, and new skills. Support Cambodia Plant Sale
For the second successive year, the Support Cambodia Plant Sale in North Walsham on 18 May broke the ÂŁ2000 barrier - all in one extraordinary morning.
Widespread advertising ensured a packed car park, queues at the gate and a frenzy of buying the 100s of quality plants donated by eight local nurseries and a number of private growers.
;
;
Inside the hall, the Cambodian Craft stall also did brisk business with ‘Cambodian’ trousers, cotton tops and silk scarves proving very popular. The slightly cool weather ensured plenty of customers for bacon butties and tea in the cafe and anyone looking to buy eggs or veg for the weekend was well satisfied, thanks to Bernard Webb, ES Burroughs [Beccles] and Richard’s Fruit & Veg.
The phenomenal amount of money raised (no costs taken) means that Support Cambodia will once again be able to provide bicycles for children from over 50 of Cambodia’s poorest rural families, giving them the chance to attend high school and greatly increasing their future prospects.

SUCCESS FOR CROMER PEREGRINES! The pair of peregrine falcons seen around Cromer in earlier months successfully mated and laid three eggs on a nest platform hastily installed at the top of the tower.
Thanks to a partnership formed by the North East Norfolk Bird Club (NENBC) with Cromer Parochial Church Council, Cromer Museum and Hawk & Owl Trust.
A CCTV 50" monitor was installed in the church lounge/cafe, where church members and visitors are welcome. This is not available during services (9.30am-10.45am Weds. and 8.30am-12.15 Sun).
Peregrines are a protected species and disturbing their nest site is an offence, therefore the tower is closed to visitors until further notice.
The adult birds proved to be excellent parents and generated lots of interest with locals and visitors. The first chick hatched on 25 May with the other two following on 27 May.
Cromer peregrines are possibly the latest to hatch in the UK and the chicks were ringed earlier this month to enable future sightings of the birds to be recorded when they fledge and leave the church.
Thanks to the
wonderful photography provided by Chris Skipper there are limited edition mugs on sale at ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ in Cromer to help raise funds for the church and further merchandising to go on sale at the Tourist Information office very soon.
For further information on the project or any birding queries please contact NENBC on info@nenbc.co.uk

Local MP celebrates North Walsham phone mast connection Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb had raised the much-delayed Brick Kiln phone mast in Parliament.
ago, and in June 2017 a planning application was approved for a mast on an Anglian Water site at Marshgate.
A North Walsham phone mast, which will serve the Marshgate, Brick Kiln Road and Spa Common areas of the town, has now gone ‘live’.
However, despite the mast being erected by December 2017, significant delays ensued in getting the mast connected and operational.
For many years, local residents have received virtually no mobile phone signal. Now, with the new mast due to host Vodafone and O2 signals, people in North Walsham will find their phone signal much improved.
Norman Lamb MP and North Walsham Councillor Eric Seward met with BT Openreach, who were responsible for the mast’s connectivity, in November 2018. In this meeting Openreach accepted that the delay had gone on for too long.
The case for improved mobile phone signal was accepted some time
Then in March 2019, Norman Lamb, raised the issue of the delay in the House of Commons to Jeremy Wright, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The mast is now connected, and went live on May 30.
Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, said “I’m very glad that the new phone mast has gone live. For many local residents, being able to use your mobile phone is an essential part of life. Now – finally – people who live near the Brick Kiln Estate and Spa Common will be able to receive phone signal. Obviously, this has taken far too long. It is wholly inadequate that the mast has been standing but not in operation for nearly 18 months. But I’m happy that we’ve finally arrived at the destination, and the mast is up and running.”
Your legal matters in safe hands for generations Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.
Eric Seward, Norfolk County and North Norfolk District Councillor for the area, said “After a long battle, improved mobile phone coverage has arrived. I am very pleased for local residents who have had to put up with poor mobile phone reception for far too long. This is a very significant improvement to amenities in North Walsham.”

ACCIDENTS AT WORK
Accidents happen all the time and although sometimes they are no one else’s fault, some accidents can be prevented. If you are injured in an accident whilst at work and it could have been prevented by your employers then it may be possible to claim compensation.
I am Keely Dougan and I am a solicitor at Hansells. I am married with 2 sons aged 10 and 14 who keep me busy. We enjoy amateur dramatics and are members of our local drama group. We also enjoy going to the theatre and spending time together.
Accidents at work can occur for numerous reasons. It can be as simple as slipping on a spillage that has not been cleaned up and where no warnings have been put up. An accident can occur from defective or unsafe equipment or if floors or stairs are in disrepair causing a fall. If you are asked to do something that is unsafe or if you are asked to do something without suitable equipment and you are injured then this could result in a claim. Another common cause of accidents at work is a failure on the part of an employer to provide adequate training, for example manual handling training, or failing to properly risk assess and activity. These are just examples and there are there could be other ways your employer is negligent. If your employers have failed to provide a safe work place then it may be possible to claim for injuries incurred.
I have worked at Hansells for 8 years. I specialise in Personal Injury law and I have almost 20 years’ experience in this area of law. I deal with most areas of personal injury law including road traffic accidents, accidents a work and tripping accidents.
Another example of a significant expense can be medical treatment which can range from physiotherapy up to private surgery in more serious cases and all the expenses related to this. In complex cases a rehabilitation company can be instructed to provide a statement detailing everything that is needed. This includes treatment needs and alterations and aids at home to make life easier.
A claim can be made for your injuries and any financial losses or expenses you incur. The compensation for injuries is based on the injuries and your recovery period. This is then compared to court guidelines and previously decided cases to assess an appropriate level of compensation.
A claim can be made for travel expenses, medical costs and care and assistance that is provided. This can include care you pay for, such as a gardener or cleaner if you are unable to do this yourself. It can also include voluntary care from family or friends who have to do things to assist you that they would not normally do.
The losses and expenses that you may suffer can be wide ranging. The most important to most people is the loss of earnings as many employers will only pay statutory sick pay even if you are injured at work. Even if they do pay you whilst you are off there can still be loss of overtime or enhanced payments for shift workers. There could also be an impact on commission, bonus’ or any reward scheme for attendance. In some circumstances people will have to change their job and this can lead to a pay cut and it may be possible to claim for this reduced income if it can be proven that the change of job is due to the injuries from the accident.
This is not a complete list of expenses and in each case we will consider all the circumstances and any additional expenses that may be incurred now and in the future.
At Hansells we are happy to discuss any injury suffered and the circumstances to consider if you have a potential claim. We will obtain further information if it is needed to consider if your employers are at fault and this can be done on a no win no fee basis at no cost to you.
Keely Dougan Solicitor: Personal Injury Tel:01603 751 938 Email:keelydougan@hansells.co.uk
If the absence from work is long term or permanent then in addition to the loss of income this can have a significant impact on any future pension payments. The impact of this can be calculated with the assistance of accountants.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have recently re-homed several cats and kittens, including Prince Rufus whose photograph appeared in the last issue. Some other cats have also been reserved, and include two that have not responded well to contact with people, that are going to stables where one of the lovely vets at Westover keeps her horse. These young cats came in from an outside situation and do not like contact with people. Although they will tolerate being touched, they prefer not to be. They will be much happier living in stables, receiving food and shelter on their terms and, given time, will probably accept more contact from the people caring for them.
We do have kittens at present, but also have a waiting list of people willing to offer them homes. At present none are available as they have not been to the vets for their health check, first vaccination and microchip. Four arrived with cat flu and we did have grave concerns that one might not survive. Thankfully it is making good progress and we are hopeful that it will recover. These kittens were found in a wood pile in a village where there is a problem because the owner of the cats will not get them neutered or take responsibility for the kittens they have. We are now working with concerned residents who are pursuing the matter with the local council and the environment agency to try to persuade the cat owners to get the cats neutered with financial help from us.
although it is time consuming, it is also very rewarding to be able to help needy cats find new homes.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Our case this month is a rather special young dog called Alvin. He is a very fit and energetic 3 year old Springer Spaniel Cross with no history of illness until recently, when he started occasionally being sick. This was followed by him stopping eating a short while later, very unusual for Alvin. He was brought straight in to see us as his owner had noticed his gums were yellow, or jaundiced. We ran blood tests which demonstrated elevations in all his liver enzymes so proceeded to ultrasound examination of his abdomen. At the time his abdomen looked quite normal and aspirates of his liver demonstrated inflammation of an unknown source. Initially he responded well to intra venous fluids and anti-biotics, but his liver enzymes remained high on blood tests and he started to be sick again. Blood tests were also run for leptospirosis as this is a relatively common cause of hepatitis in dogs, but Alvin has been vaccinated and it was subsequently ruled out. At this point it was determined that Alvin would need liver biopsies. Fortunately these could be performed by key hole surgery which greatly reduced the risk and helped his recovery post surgery. These biopsies indicated that the inflammation had been going on for longer than we could know about and his liver had started to fibrose in places as well. He has started anti-inflammatory medication and is currently still eating well (a special diet for liver disease) and back out on his walks. He has been a wonderful patient through all of his tests and is a firm favourite in the surgery so we all hope he continues to do well.
In the last article I mentioned we always welcomed new volunteers to our ranks and have been asked what is involved if people wish to foster for us. It is a full-time commitment, as someone needs to be available every day to care for the cats and, when holidays occur, alternative arrangements will need to be made. Most of our cats are housed in pens in people’s gardens although we do have one lady who can accommodate them in her home as she has no pets of her own. The cat pens, and all expenses relating to their installation, are provided and paid for by the branch. We also pay for cat food (apart from that generously provided by the customers who fill the cat box each week in Sainsburys), cat litter, litter trays, dishes etc. They will have the support of other volunteers and,
Serving the North Norfolk community since 1990
Although Alvin tested negative for leptospirosis this water borne disease is something that can affect our pets so we strongly recommend vaccinating to prevent it happening. Toby Morrell MRCVS, Westover Veterinary Centre

Mr Hester said “The comedy night came just after my year as mayor ended but it was a great way to finish the fundraising - with a new event for the town that people supported and enjoyed.”
Stand-up comedy provided a fun finale to a year-long appeal helping a north Norfolk hospital support group.
Top TV comic Hal Cruttenden headlined an evening of laughter that rounded off a civic fundraising drive in aid of the Friends of North Walsham War Memorial Hospital.
The Stand Up for North Walsham night raised £615 for the Friends, who were outgoing mayor Barry Hester’s charity of the year.
The event, watched by a 150-strong audience at the Atrium, brought the total generated by the mayor for the Friends during his year of office to around £4200.

Headliner Hal, a well-known face on television’s Mock the Week and Have I Got News for You, combined his wry look at middle aged life with topical and political ‘rants’.
He was supported by up-and-coming regional comedians Nelson Gombakomba, Josh Ryan, and Alexander Oliver, who also organised the Nelson Gombakomba line-up and during his spot compered the evening, plus Ross McGrane, who stepped in at the last moment for Phileo Huff, whose wife went into labour just hours before the event.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Fear of Body in the sea off Happisburgh
Happisburgh Lifeboat Volunteers were called into action in the evening earlier this month to go to the aid of a 31ft cruiser that had broken down off the coast at Happisburgh Lighthouse.
Happisburgh RNLI volunteers were called into action earlier this month to an object in the water 400m off Town Gap, Happisburgh.
Deputy Launching Authortiy Paul Broomfield was alerted by the UK Coastguard and in turn alerted the crew for a launch of the Station’s Atlantic Howard Bell with Jake Munday on the helm and Martin Gibbs, Sean Thurston and Chris Rigsby as crew.
The UK Coastguard alerted Deputy Launching Authority, Paul Broomfield with the information. He in turn alerted the crew to launch the Station’s D Class lifeboat Russell Pickering to investigate the object. Within minutes the lifeboat was on the water with Tim Grimmer as helm and Sean Thurston and Jon Newton as crew.
Russell Pickering was soon off town gap and, with Bacton Coastguard with the caller, soon established that the object was in fact the Wave Buoy which is operated by the Environment Agency.
Howard Bell was soon alongside the cruiser which had lost power with four persons on board. Martin Gibbs and Sean Thurston were put on board the cruiser to try to get the cruiser underway. They managed to get the engines started again but after 5 mins they stopped; the crew were unable to get them restarted. They then rigged for towing the cruiser to Great Yarmouth.
This was a false alarm with good intent. Tim Grimmer said “if you are not sure of what you are seeing and worried then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. The most important thing for the caller to do is to stay and watch the object until the Coastguard and lifeboat arrive on scene so the object can be checked. This is what this caller did. If he had not stayed and observed the object then there would have had to be a full scale search.” This was the first shout for Jon Newton.
It all goes wrong for Mundesley Players
Once underway the Lifeboat was only making a speed of 6 knots which would have taken them till after 11pm to arrive at Great Yarmouth. The crew informed UK Coastguards and Caister Lifeboat was launched to come up the coast to meet them and then take over the tow to Great Yarmouth. The transfer of tow took place off Horsey at 9:30pm.
In their hilarious comedy show ‘Streuth & Deckchairs’ things get totally out of control for the Mundesley Players.
Once the tow was safely handed over to Caister Lifeboat the Howard Bell returned to Station and was rehoused and made ready for service.
Over the top acting, scenery toppling, lights fusing. At the Coronation Hall Mundesley on the 1 to 3 August, simply expect the unexpected.
This was the first callout for Chris Rigsby. Jake Munday said “this was a good job and the crew all worked well together and it is always good to work with other Lifeboats”
Chairperson Cheryl Collings said that the actors were having great fun making things go so far wrong that it becomes a total farce.
Absolute Boiler Replacement
“I know that amateur theatre has this expectation of wobbly scenery and bad acting, but in this case, the problems are intended and are being pushed to the limit for laughs.”
We specialise in boiler replacements and full heating systems. A power flush and magnetic filter are included with each installation.
In a play called “Streuth!” everything that can go wrong will go wrong.
As part of the whole evening there are also three short individual ‘Deckchair’ plays. Set on a seafront in a fictional seaside town remarkably like Mundesley, a series of odd characters discuss their lives and what naughty things they have been up to. Sometimes with surprising and funny results.
More information and tickets for the Mundesley Players short running show of ‘Streuth & Deckchairs’ are available from Jupe in Station Road Mundesley from 8 July and cost just £8. Running for the first three days in August, this is expected to be a popular show.
We fit a wide range of brands to fit any budget.
Finance is available on request, with option of 0% deposit. All major credit/debit cards taken

First Art Exhibition in Lessingham Methodist Chapel
Quilts are wonderful things – all shapes, all sizes, all colours, all patterns, all very different and rarely, if ever (?) two the same.
They are designed and sewn with love. Each one has its own reason for being, maybe a celebration, maybe reminiscences, maybe a life story – the possibilities are endless.
Many quilts are made for charities such as Nelson’s Journey where a quilt is given to each child who receives support. Quilts are also welcomed at the hospitals where they are used to cover incubators for new born babies. The incubators need to be covered at night to create a period of darkness so that new-borns learn the difference between night and day.
One of the display items will be a friendship quilt - this was created from strips of patchwork, contributed by members of the Mustard Seed Quilt Group. Over the course of 10 months, 10 members each produced one strip per meeting, measuring 24” x 4”. These strips were then shared between the members each member to make their own keepsake. Ros Peedle decided to make hers into a friendship quilt and this will be on display.
Nelson Quilt Group has just been doing the same. Their own works will be completed and shown at their meeting on 3 July. We very much hope that one or two will be on show at Lessingham later in the week.
You will be able to see some of this wonderful work at the exhibition in Lessingham Methodist Chapel between Tuesday 2 and Saturday 6 July. The exhibition combines the worlds of quilting, art and photography.
The final line up of exhibitors in the
Will You Dance?
Ladies and Gentlemen, lend me your ears, These steps that I teach will stay with you for years. To Waltz or to Quickstep, that is the question, Young, fit and spry, or drawing your pension. Age shall not wither you, nor custom stale, These dance steps will keep you hearty and hale. Hell hath no fury like a woman who’s spurned She’ll burn off her rage with dances she learned! Alas, poor Eric, I knew him so well His two left feet gave his dance partners hell! So don’t say, “We’re past our dancing days.” Stay light on your feet with your Pasodobles. All the world is a stage, that’s what they say, So dance all your troubles and worries away, If music be the food of love, then play on, Dance all your days, ‘til your days are all done!
art and photography section will be Gaile Buckingham (acrylic art through the camera), Helen Tobin (abstract photography and art) Liz Fiddy (photographic art), Sara Edwards (acrylics), Karlene Parry (watercolours), Eden Willimott (photography), Trevor Fiddy (photography), Eileen Neill (watercolours), Gary Limehouse (abstracts from acrylics), Rona Prince (oils on canvas) and David Bean (pastels)
We hope that you will find some time to come along to this first exhibition to be held in the Chapel. Most of us are first-time exhibitors and we welcome you to come and visit, have a cup of tea and have a chat with the artists.
The exhibition is open between Tuesday 2 and
Friendship Quilt by Ros Peedle
Saturday 6 July each day from 10am to 4pm and will remain open to 7pm on Friday 5 July. Entry is free and tea, coffee and home-made refreshments will be available.

Many people interested in volunteering with The Salvation Army’s Toys & Tins Appeal at Christmas get in touch too late, the church and charity reports.
Major Barry Willson, coordinator of the Toys & Tins Appeal, explains “The majority of the sorting, packing and delivery of donations takes place from mid-November onwards to enable us to get the presents and food parcels to families in time for Christmas. We have to start planning early autumn and we need to engage with our potential volunteer workforce long before November if we are to make the best use of their time. Once teams and roles have been assigned, it’s not always possible to accept later offers of help. I’d encourage anyone who has thought about volunteering at Christmas to get in touch as soon as possible.” For more information about volunteering opportunities with the Toys & Tins Appeal, contact anglia@salvationarmy.org.uk or call 01603 724400.
Each Christmas, The Salvation Army across Norfolk identifies families in need of support through referrals from social services and agencies as well as families contacting the church and charity direct.
Families supported by the appeal face a range of challenges, including unemployment, low income, homelessness, mental health issues, disabilities and financial pressures because of delays in benefits.
In 2018, volunteers sorted and delivered approximately 15,000 toys to make up parcels for more than 3,000 children thanks to donations from the great Norfolk public. Social services and agencies referred 2,223 children to The Salvation Army last year, a 38 per cent increase in comparison to the previous appeal. Volunteers are needed to help The Salvation Army keep
pace with demand.
Volunteer support is needed at local Salvation Army church and community centres across Norfolk in addition to the appeal’s central warehouse in Norwich. Opportunities to volunteer for a half or full day start at the end of November to mid-December.
Roles include: • Sorting donations • Making up bags of toys and food parcels for families • Distributing bags of toys and food parcels in appeal vans to local Salvation Army centres and partner agencies so they can give them to families before Christmas.
Further volunteering opportunities may be available at Salvation Army church and community centres throughout the year and in December. Each local Salvation Army offers services based on the needs of the community. Opportunities may include serving customers in Salvation Army charity shops and serving guests at Christmas Day meals for people who are vulnerable or isolated. For further information, contact your nearest Salvation Army. Contact details are available via The Salvation Army’s website: salvationarmy.org.uk
Barry added “While our Christian faith motivates us as an organisation to offer support for the community, volunteering opportunities are open to all who wish to partner with us - to people of all faiths and none. We’d love to meet anyone who wants to help us support people in need and those who are vulnerable and marginalised in this county. At Christmas, Toys & Tins volunteers join thousands of Salvation Army volunteers that are mobilised across Norfolk, the UK and the world over a movement working to transform lives by spreading hope and joy.”
Council Leader to hold Monthly Surgeries Views sought from members of the public
Members of the public are being encouraged to share their views and raise questions about the service provided by North Norfolk District Council with its Leader, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer.
Cllr. Bütikofer will continue to host monthly surgeries at the Council’s Cromer offices - half hour appointments can be arranged by contacting lynda.mcelligott@north-norfolk.gov.uk or by calling Lynda McElligott on 01263 516242.
Surgery dates are as follows : • 30 July • 27 August • 24 September • 29 october • 26 november • 17 December Appointments will be available between 12.30pm – 5pm. Leader of the Council, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, said “The surgeries that I have held so far have given me a great opportunity to listen to the views and concerns of local residents and to understand what matters to them and the communities they live in.
Commercial and Residential
“It’s important that the Council understands what’s important to local people so that we can put them at the heart of everything we do, so I would encourage people to come along to one of the forthcoming surgeries to meet with me.”

Jerk lobster, crab, coconut and pea rice At the Grove we always believe that a little bit of effort goes a long way. This is a fairly complicated recipe but really rewarding and just perfect for a rip-roaring summer barbeque. Although the crab gets the plaudits, Cromer lobster is absolutely terrific and this dish is a firm favourite when it’s on during the season. There’s nothing quite like sitting outside with some cracking seafood and a chilled bottle of white; last season we had a few couples actually helicopter in and land on the lawn all to enjoy this incredible produce the fishermen pull in from the North Sea. The junior chefs were tempted to take the chopper for a joyride but we managed to apprehend them at the front door, there’s not a qualified pilot amongst them but apparently it looked ‘pretty easy to fly’. A lucky escape perhaps. We look forward to seeing you at the Grove this summer.

Wash the rice in several changes of water, then leave to soak in cold water for 30 minutes.

Blickling Hall Library comes to Mundesley
Bunty Gotts, a volunteer and speaker for the National Trust, came to Mundesley Library and thoroughly entertained her audience with an informative talk about the library at Blickling Hall. This was the fourth talk promoted by Mundesley Library Friends.
Meanwhile, prepare the rice. Place a pan with a tight-fitting lid over a medium heat and add a drizzle of oil. Once hot, add the spring onions and garlic and sweat for 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Pour in the coconut milk and stock and bring to a simmer. Turn the heat down to low, then cover with the lid on and cook gently for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and leave to stand, still covered, for 5 minutes, then add the crab and peas, folding gently
To finish the lobsters, place the lobster claws on a white-hot barbecue and cook for 3–4 minutes. Turn the lobsters' claws over and add the lobster tails, shell side down, and the lime halves, cut side down. Cook for 3–4 minutes, then turn the lobster tails over and cook for a further 2 minutes. Sprinkle over more chopped coriander and arrange the lime pieces to one side. Fluff up the rice with a fork and serve on the side.

She then singled out just 4 volumes, based on criteria such as rarity and beauty, from the collection of well over 10000 books and she explained the reason for the selection and the significance of each item.
Coming right up to date, Bunty described the threats to the safe keeping of the book collection and the steps the Trust were taking to preserve the books in good condition.

Mundesley Library Friends have one further talk planned before a summer break - from Wild Touch, – the bird and animal sanctuary at Ridlington, on Friday 12 July at 5pm. Do come and hear about the wonderful work done by this local charity. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
Carefully cut the lobsters in half lengthways from head to tail, then remove the stomach sac from the head and the dark intestinal thread running along the length of the tail. Crack the claws and lay the lobster halves on a tray and spoon half the jerk sauce over them. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes while you light and heat up the barbecue.
PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS, BUILDING YOUR FUTURE
Blickling library is the National Trust’s jewel in the crown and is regarded as the finest collection among their 160 libraries and on a par with the British Museum collection. Yet, surprisingly, the collection’s owner, Sir Richard Ellys, never lived at Blickling and was only a distant relative of the owner. Bunty explained how this came about.
Tickets cost £3 and are available from Mundesley Library 01263 720702.

Offshore Barge at Bacton – latest stage of depending on the weather. An outfall is a drainage pipeline which sandscaping project removes rain and treated water from the gas terminal. Spud leg barge is digging a trench for the new terminal outfall
A large ship, known as a spud leg barge, is currently offshore at Bacton digging the trench necessary to build the new outfall for the Bacton Gas Terminal.
The creation of a new outfall is a key part of the Sandscaping project, which will place approximately 1.8 million cubic metres of sand on the beaches in front of the terminal and the villages of Bacton and Walcott. The height and width of the beaches will be significantly increased and access to beaches improved. These improved beaches are designed to provide robust protection to the terminal for approximately 20 years, while extending the life of the village defences.
Three outfalls are being decommissioned and replaced with a single outfall. This needs to happen before the sand nourishment aspect of the project begins in July, lasting approximately six to eight weeks www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
The sand placement part of the project will be the most visually striking element of the scheme.
Machinery with global positioning will assist with moving the sand into Samantha Macdonald place and engineer it precisely. As it proceeds, the project will move from Bacton – in front of the gas terminal – to Walcott.
Lashes & Brows
Safety of personnel, local people and visitors will be paramount during 07707 945583 the scheme.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Coastal at North Norfolk District Council, said: “While the sand nourishment element of the Sandscaping scheme is the one which we expect will attract the most interest, it is very pleasing to see the progress of the outfall element.
“This is a large and impressive scheme which will provide protection to people’s homes and critical nationally important infrastructure.”

Northrepps artist exhibiting artworks at the
2019 Salisbury International Arts Festival
As an active North Norfolk resident, you may be familiar with the name Katayoun Dowlatshahi. Not shy to support her local community, Katayoun organises the popular Thorpe Market Snowdrop Sunday fundraiser, sings and promotes Cantamus community choir, and engages with local children to reconnect with nature in an educational capacity.
But did you know that Katayoun is a well-respected visual artist, printmaker & photographer? She was recently selected from over 400 applicants to show her work alongside 6 other artists at the Salisbury International Arts Festival in Wiltshire. The exhibition, Insatiable Mind, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the moon landings and runs until the 16th July 2019.
Wishing to share her passion for art and nature she has recently launched a programme of drawing, photography and environmental workshops including willow weaving from her Silverwood Studio. Katayoun is offering bespoke group and individual sessions and mentoring, in historic photography and darkroom work. Over and above her professional work, Katayoun is
keen to support North Norfolk talent and is working with the PCC to improve the exhibition facilities at Thorpe Market church making this a popular and well visited venue for North Norfolk artists, photographers and makers.
Katayoun’s Silverwood Art Studio and Darkroom is to be found in Northrepps and offers the perfect space for workshop participants to immerse themselves in a creative environment.
Further information about Katayoun’s portfolio and workshops can be found at www.silverwoodstudio.co.uk info@silverwoodstudio.co.uk 07944 731081.
Public commissions form a large part of her professional practice because of her unique talent at incorporating art into the fabric of public spaces and buildings. Her current public art schemes include Rochester Riverside in Kent, Cleethorpes seafront in North East Lincolnshire and Kingston Bridge in Kingston upon Thames in Surrey.
New discovery sheds light upon England's leading medieval family The Paston family are perhaps the best known medieval family in England. Between about 1380 and 1750 they rose from humble origins to become leading members of the aristocracy, played a major role in the politics of the day, and even entertained royalty at their sumptuous mansions. Made famous today by the medieval letters they left behind them, the Pastons are amongst the most studied individuals in the English later Middle Ages.
However, a recent discovery at Oxnead church in north Norfolk has uncovered evidence of an entirely new, and previously unknown, member of the medieval Paston family, which will literally re-write what was thought to be known about the family.
IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN THE WINTER?
A small medieval memorial brass has brought to light the sad story of a young girl whose short life, and tragic death, had previously gone unnoticed by historians and academics.
The newly recognised memorial brass was discovered in Oxnead church, which sits next to the once-great Paston mansion of Oxnead Hall, by members of the Paston Footprints Project. It was at Oxnead Hall that the Paston family entertained king Charles II in 1671, and where the medieval Paston letters were discovered mouldering in an attic room half a century later. The brass is tucked away between two larger monuments, is written in heavily abbreviated Latin, and reads 'Here lies Anna, daughter of John Paston Knight, on whose soul God have mercy, Amen'. It is now believed that this small monument represents a completely new and previously unknown member of the illustrious Paston family.
The Paston Footprints Project will be undertaking further work at Oxnead throughout the Summer.

Annual charity garden show raises over £3000 for local charities
A bee themed garden, complete with hexagonal shelves and vertical wall planting, won this year’s public vote at the Woodgate Nursery Charity Garden show, in Aylsham.
The ‘Bee Happy’ Garden was designed by Susannah Black Garden Design and built by IFC Landscapes. Woodgate Nursery came second with their beach inspired garden, including crab pots and rusty anchors.
Amongst the highlights of the weekend included some outstanding show gardens, a Saxon and Viking re-enactment group, music by the Aylsham Brass Band and local ironmongers and willow weavers in action.
The two day event raised £3123, which will be shared out between the two local charities of the Aylsham Scouts and the Aylsham Roman Project.
