PLANNING APPLICATION FOR £4.15MILLION CANCER CENTRE AT CROMER HOSPITAL GOES IN

Plans for a proposed £4.15million cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital have been submitted.

Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre, which will be called the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre.

The plans, involving the refurbishment and extension of a disused ward, will now be considered by North Norfolk District Council. If permission is granted, building work is expected to take around a year.

The proposed centre will enable patients, many of whom currently travel to Norwich, to have their treatment and access support services closer to home.

The centre, on the site of the former Davison Unit, will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. Continued on page 4...

North Norfolk District Council achieves trio of Green Flag Awards for green spaces

PLANNING APPLICATION FOR £4.15MILLION CANCER CENTRE AT CROMER HOSPITAL GOES IN

Holt Country Park, Pretty Corner Woods and Sadler’s Woods recognised again as among best open spaces in the UK

Continued from front cover... • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management.

Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, has re-joined Holt Country Park and Pretty Corner Woods in being recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

Holt Country Park holds its position as a green space for the 14th year running and was joined by Pretty Corner Woods in 2013. Sadler’s Wood first received the accolade in 2012 and despite just missing out last year it has now re-claimed its place thanks to the hard work of our Countryside Team.

The majority of funding for the centre will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is providing up to £2.2 million and Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which is contributing £1.5million. The remaining £450,000 is coming out of NNUH Trust funds.

The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The number of people living with cancer is growing and predicted to rise from 2.5million today to four million by 2030. In Norfolk, around 6,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. There are approximately 35,300 people living with cancer in the county.

Gwyneth Tyler, Macmillan Head of Services for South and East England, said “It is fantastic to see this crucial project, which will improve cancer care for so many people in North Norfolk, move another step forward with the submission of the planning application. If permission is granted, this centre will help to meet the growing need for people to get treatment and support closer to home. Of course, this type of project is only possible thanks to people’s generosity. At Macmillan, we are entirely reliant on public donations and that support is what enables us to be there for people living with cancer and the people who support them.”

Cllr. Virginia Gay, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Wellbeing, said “We’re truly delighted to be receiving a Green Flag award for the 14th year in a row. It’s especially pleasing to hear the news about a Green Flag for Sadler’s Wood. Our woodlands and green spaces mean so much to everyone and these awards celebrate the dedication that goes into maintaining them to such a high standard.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.”

Mark Davies, NNUH Chief Executive, said “We run one of the biggest cancer centres in the country and the expansion of Cromer Hospital is a key part of our plans to provide the best care for patients with cancer.”

“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”

Currently, Cromer Hospital provides a range of acute out-patient and day case services and has a minor injuries unit.

The trust provides acute hospital care to a catchment area of almost 830,000 people from Norfolk and neighbouring counties. The original 1930s Cromer Hospital was redeveloped at a cost of £15million in 2012 and provides a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services, day case operations and a Minor Injuries Unit open seven days a week.

The international award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Marine and Wildlife Rescue. Sir David the grey seal release. Wildlife Centre. He had been at the RSPCA facility undergoing treatment for an embedded frisbee cutting deep into his neck.

Going On Wednesday 3rd July, Sir David, an atlantic grey seal, was released back into the North Sea having spent exactly 3 months at East Winch

Unfortunately, calls received for entangled seals have rocketed in recent years .We attend, on average, at least one a month, often collaborating with volunteers from Friends of Horsey Seals and British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Going

Our charity has been actively involved in the rescue of seals around the Norfolk coast for many years. In August 2013, we even captured an entangled grey seal on Scroby sand bank off Great Yarmouth. That mission was with help from the Caister Lifeboat Crew and we managed to cut the netting off and release instantly.

Your legal matters in safe hands for generations Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

Gone

Sir David was 126 KG when he was captured. After netting him, we managed to get him into a large stretcher and he was transferred to the RSPCA seal hospital. The video of the moment he was captured can be viewed on our facebook page. Had it not been for our strategic planning and the vigilance of the persons who spotted him on a visit to the colony at Horsey, we may have lost the opportunity to capture him.

If you are concerned for the welfare of a seal, or other wildlife, please call us on 01692 650338.

Garden Kitchen at Hoveton Hall

The Garden Kitchen in Hoveton really is a hidden gem. The courtyard setting transports you to a place where you instantly succumb to the relaxed atmosphere and enjoy a delicious menu and great service. Whether you’re looking for a multi-course meal or a simple coffee and cake, Head Chef, Alex Firman and his team have it covered.

Situated on the edge of the Hoveton Hall estate, The Garden Kitchen is about as authentic as it gets. Many of the herbs and leaves have been grown within the grounds and much of the lamb and game has been reared onsite too.

The courtyard is beautifully decked out with

patio plants and large orange parasols; at times is feels more like Provence than Norfolk. There’s a relaxed paddock area too, complete with garden games and deck chairs for those wanting to run their children and relax in the sun. If the weather is a little more ‘British’ then the rustic hay barn and cart shed provide another unique setting to enjoy the seasonal and locally sourced food.

The Garden Kitchen is open Sunday-Friday from 10-4:30pm. It keeps its doors open for evening service on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays too, rounding the week off with live music in the courtyard on a Friday night. The vibe goes from a relaxed daytime eatery to

something a little more special by night where you might just want to indulge in a cocktail or sample the delicious wine list.

As for the winter months, Garden Kitchen has traditionally closed its barn doors but this year the courtyard and outbuildings will come into their own during the festive period… watch this space!

Bacton to Walcott Coastal Management Scheme reaches key milestone

Sand placement has commenced at Bacton.

The beaches in front of Bacton Gas Terminal and the villages of Bacton and Walcott will be transformed during summer 2019 as a result of the Bacton to Walcott Coastal Management Scheme.

The UK-first, multi-partner project will see approximately 1.8 million cubic metres of sand placed and engineered on these beaches. A vessel has arrived off the coast of Bacton and commenced pumping of the sand on 14 July through metal pipes on the beach.

At the fastest pace, up to 240 metres of new beach will be completed per day.

North Norfolk District Council is leading the Sandscaping scheme in collaboration with the Bacton Terminal Operators to protect nationally important infrastructure and benefit local communities.

The scheme is a collaboration between North Norfolk District Council, the Bacton Terminal Operators, the Environment Agency and a range of other contributors.

The project will create significantly bigger beaches, improved beach access and better protection from the sea for the gas terminal and the villages of Bacton and Walcott. Over time there could be benefits to other villages along the coastline.

In 1869 Reverend Thomas Bowman Stephenson set up a small family home in a stable for two boys, giving them a loving home, an education and hope for the future.

This work still remains a necessity and today Action for Children continue to support the children, young adults and families who need them.

The North Norfolk support group for Action for Children held an afternoon of celebrations at North Walsham Methodist Church on Saturday 13 July. This included talks by Jill Grimmes on the work of the support group and Holly Canham spoke about the work of Action for Children today. A presentation was made, by Holly Canham, to David Starling as he stepped down from his role as support group Chair having been involved with the support group for over 30 years.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

After a few setbacks, the kittens mentioned last time are now making good progress. It is important to make sure that kittens are seen by a vet straight away when they are unwell because, being small and still having immature immune systems, their health can deteriorate very quickly. Fortunately, our fosterers usually recognise when there is a problem and can take appropriate action. As Pablo, the little kitten whose photo appeared in the last article, left for his new home, two more very young kittens arrived from the same site. All the cats on this site had been neutered last year but, unfortunately, new ones have arrived from other areas of the industrial estate and have taken up residence. None of these had been neutered, hence the kittens, so our friend who feeds and cares for the colony is now on a mission to catch these new cats and take them to Westover to be neutered. We are very lucky to have such understanding vets, both here and at the Bridge at Wroxham, as they are always willing to accept the cats at short notice. We do however, try to avoid catching the cats on days when they have a full operating list, although on the odd occasion, this has been unavoidable.

At present we have several young cats under 1 year old, ready and waiting to find loving new homes. These are not necessarily shown on our website. Brexit and Benji are a little nervous, Archie, Lena, Malcolm and Harry are full of mischief and then there is Little Joe who just loves people, is very active and gets very excited when someone new comes to see him. If you are hoping to home a young cat, rather than a little kitten, one of these may just be the right one for you.

In the last article we mentioned different ways people could help the cats by suggesting fund raising opportunities and also how they could take responsibility for ordering stock for sale at our major sales. For those with computer skills who have a little time to spare, there are several other options available. Vaccination cards, forms used within the branch

relating to the cats, fund raising free goods, leaflets on cat care etc are all ordered on line from Head Office. We also order veterinary medicines, treatments, vaccines etc via our vets, from a company with whom Cats Protection has a special arrangement. Another company is used to obtain disinfectants and yet a further one holds stocks of our vaccines. These are all done on an “as and when needed” Tango, she is the oldest cat basis and each one takes very in care and is 15 little time, ideal for someone who wants to be involved with the work we do who either cannot take on an active role or who just enjoys using their computer skills.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

In the last two weeks yet more hoglets have been admitted.

These little ones normally would be snuggled in the nest with mother and siblings keeping each other warm – a lone one soon loses body heat so they need constant contact heat.

I am often asked about fleas. A healthy hog has fleas. If one is admitted with none alarm bells ring that there is a health issue even if nothing is visible. I spray the spines with a cat flea product avoiding the face. Fleas soon fall off and die and until they go back into the wild will not have anymore. Hedgehog fleas cannot usually survive on dogs or cats.

North Walsham Funday

The curtain has closed on this year’s North Walsham Funday.

The event, which started off as a one day event 10 years ago, has now turned into four days including a carnival parade.

This year the weekend kicked off with the opening of the funfair followed by the Friday being the first day of a three day music fest featuring local bands and a rock n’ roll alldayer on the Saturday.

This year for the first year a car boot sale was held in conjunction with North Walsham Play. The carnival parade built on the success of last year’s and this year featured more than 25 floats from dance groups, commercial vehicles, community groups and military vehicles. Congratulations to this year’s Funday parade winners – Walkers – Dance For Fun, Small float – Cromer, Business – Lewis Turner Flooring & Blinds, Classic Vehicle – Malcolm Parrish (American Fire Engine), Large Float and Overall winners – North Walsham Skating.

just a week before the event said the event has been breathtaking with the amount of support we have had from the community. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of those who supported us this year including North Walsham Town Council, Poppies Day Nursery, Drury’s Transport, Yendell’s Health and Wellness Hub, North Walsham Fire Protection, The Black Swan, Andrea Hudson Photography, Carl Bird Skip Hire, Trevor Charles Van Hire, Maisie May Bridal, The Sewing Room, North Walsham Community Centre, North Walsham Play, Larry Gray & Sons Funfair, Rhythmic Event Hire, Toll Barn Veterinary Centre, Pleasurewood Hills, Specsavers, North Walsham Community Shop, First Aid Support Thetford, Cromer Carnival and all the bands Nightlife, Uprising, Ultra Ego, Rock ‘n Eddy Foulser, Steve Hooker Stomping Band, Big Black Cadillac, Those Deadbeat Cats, Julie Jive and the Bigshots, V8 Rockets, The Jets, Stage Frite, Vapour, Hillbilly Goats Gruff, Coast and lastly The Blackjacks all who gave their time to support the event.

The event was organised by a committee of just seven backed up by a band of volunteers who helped with litter picking, parade

!!

Chairman Colin Jeary who took on the reins

marshalling, the car boot and everything in between. The Chairman said that events like this would be impossible to run without a band of volunteers who can be called on to help. Most events were attended by this year’s Funday ‘Royal’ family – Queen Chloe, Attendant Caitlin, Princess - Milly and Prince – Stefan.

Chairman Colin who headed the parade on his bike said it’s great to see the town come out and show their support, it makes all the work and planning worthwhile when you see people enjoying what you’ve organised. Obviously the weather helped considerably but that’s something we have no control over.

We have already starting thinking of next year with provisional dates for next year (pending permission) Thursday 25 – Sunday 28 June 2020 with the parade being on Saturday 27 June.

‘6by4 North Norfolk’

CALLING ALL ARTISTS - ARTIST’S SECRET POSTCARD FUNDRAISER

Thorpe Market Church is a church & rural arts venue in North Norfolk and is going to be host to a very special anonymous fundraising exhibition/ sale of original, postcard-sized artworks in 2 & 3 dimensions to raise funds for professional quality audio visual facilities at the venue. The original artworks will be created and donated by established and up-andcoming artists from all over the country. We are also inviting well known artists with a connection to Norfolk to submit and support this rural initiative. Entries are invited from all established, emerging & amateur artists. The brief is simple : all entries (up to a max. of 3 per person) must be on card, 6 inches by four inches (15 x 10 cm) and in any original medium including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, glass, ceramics and assemblage. The church is well known for its wildlife churchyard conservation scheme. Themes reflecting ecological concerns & reflections, including challenging submissions are welcome.

‘6by4’ will be held as an exhibition for three days at Thorpe Market Church on 18 – 20 October. Potential buyers will be able to view the anonymous postcards on-line from early October. This is a great opportunity for young and emerging talent to be shown alongside mid- career and established artists. It is also a great chance for art lovers and collectors to purchase a hidden gem from an unusual rural ‘Gothic Revival’ architectural gem.

Closing date for entries Friday 27 September 2019.

The Waiting Game

Life can be so frustrating! All the reasons that we have to wait We wait for a break in the traffic, Or kill time ‘til that special date. We wait for that urgent telephone call, Or a letter that makes us so glad. We wait for some wonderful weather, Or replies to a newspaper ad’. We all wait for buses, taxis or trains To go to, or come home from work. But time wasted waiting at traffic lights, Or stuck in jams, drives us berserk! There’s always a cocky queue hopper! Woe betide he who has the brass neck, To push to the front of a long patient queue! He’ll only do that once, by heck! So, though we’re forever waiting, Don’t take us for fools or you’ll see, A normally mild mannered person Will become your worst enemy!

If you have received a diagnosis of Dementia, it's important to put together a plan for your future wishes and care Our living with dementia Q&As highlight how a solicitor can help make sure plans for the future are put in place and are legally valid.

your loved ones know your preferences regarding treatment. Living Wills are not usually as comprehensive as a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare and so it is recommended that you seek legal advice in the first instance.

Q1. How can a solicitor help someone living with dementia plan for their future? A solicitor can help someone living with dementia plan for their future by taking their instructions for Wills, Trusts and Lasting Powers of Attorney. It is a common misconception that someone diagnosed with dementia lacks the capacity to make legal documents. Solicitors can assess the person's capacity when taking instructions for legal documents and involve GPs where necessary. If someone living with dementia does not have capacity then the Court of Protection can appoint a Deputy to manage their affairs and the Deputy can make an application for a Statutory Will on their behalf.

Q2. what are Lasting Powers of attorney and what do they cover? Lasting Powers of Attorney are documents which appoint people (attorneys) to deal with your finances and welfare in the event that you lose capacity. You are able to provide instructions to your attorneys in the documents or your preferences in regards to specific matters. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property & Financial Affairs allows your attorneys to make decisions which are in your best interests in relation to your property, bank accounts and investments. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare allows your attorneys to make decisions in relation to your personal welfare including your care needs.

Q3. what is a deputy and how can you become one? A Deputy is a person who is appointed by the Court of Protection to make decisions on behalf of a person who has lost capacity and cannot make or amend their Lasting Powers of Attorney. It is more common for a Deputy to be appoint to manage the person's Property & Financial Affairs as the Court accepts that in most cases healthcare professionals are best placed to make decisions regarding a personal's welfare. The application to become a Deputy is a paper application to the Court and requires specific forms to be completed. Family members/friends can be appointed as Deputies as can professionals. The Office of the Public Guardian also have a panel of professional Deputies they can appoint in complex or contested cases.

Q5. what advice would you give to someone living with dementia when it comes to planning for the future? A diagnosis of dementia does not mean that you are unable to make legal documents, however it is best to make legal documents sooner rather than later so that your wishes can be carried out in the event that you do lose capacity. Just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make a Will. However, time is of the essence and it is important to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for

testamentary capacity.

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are delighted to announce that we are now offering legal appointments in Cromer, having secured a private meeting room at Merchants Place in Cromer on the last Friday of every month.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

On Thursday 4 July the Club did not celebrate with red white and blue for American Independence Day, but instead we had our own annual celebration with strawberry cream teas accompanied by a ‘good ol’ quiz’!

We have been doing this now for several years now and it is very popular with members. We have a new quiz master and the questions were very mixed and easy to follow.

When the quiz ended we had tea followed by homemade scones with strawberries & cream. These delights were donated to the Club by two members of the committee who give up their free time to shop and cook

the scones. We would also like to thank all the kitchen staff who did a grand job of making the scones look so appetising. The Club will not be at the Community Centre next month because we are taking a visit to Hadfields Garden Centre where we will stay for tea. The raffle raised £28.

We are always looking for new members so if you are blind or partially sighted why no pay us a visit. When we are not on an outing we are at the Community Centre on the first Thursday of every month at 2pm except for January.

Summer at Mannington

Mannington Estate is hoping to focus children away from their screens this summer to come and enjoy the great outdoors over the holidays.

The estate has invested in extending their current children’s playground and also offers a Fairy Trail. The Mannington Minnows Nature Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday during the school holidays with themes such as ‘Ponds & Streams’, ‘Dens’ and ‘Pigsty Art’!

Commercial and Residential

Although picnics are welcome, visitors can also enjoy home baked seasonal lunches and cakes at the Greedy Goose café where chef Helen Lewis sources all ingredients locally and produces everything from scratch including jams and chutneys.

‘Most eulogies about Norfolk, to North Walsham also apply Yarmouth’s only a stone’s throw away, the Broads and Norwich nearby:

norfolk has‘wild roughness’ and uncultivated oddities’. (Stephen Fry) ‘once you get to know Norfolk, there is no better place’ to be. (John Timpson) ‘rare and beautiful Norfolk’is‘whispering and watery’. (John Sell Cotman/John Betjeman) ‘turnips…enormous’ are renowned: ‘Fair Norfolk bears the belle.' (Old rhyme) ‘Hurry down those languorous miles of…alder-shaded lanes’, loved well. (John Betjeman)

'what a grand, higgledy-piggledy, sensible old place’ is Norwich city. (J. B. Priestley) 'alone, islanded in the turmoil of the seas’ Norfolk would survive’, so pretty. (James Wentworth Day) 'Lovers of Norfolk churches can never agree which…’ most to applaud. (John Betjeman) 'see the mice in their million hordes’ – or tourists? - at the Norfolk Broads. (David Bowie) Horatio Nelson: ‘I am a Norfolk man and Glory in being so.' (Horatio Nelson) 'all England may be carved out of Norfolk', don’t you know? (Thomas Fuller) ‘More than 50% of the neighbours are fish.' So let Cromer crab be in my dish! (Raffaella Barker’)
