North Norfolk District Council secures funding to renew and revive North Walsham’s historic town centre Award from Historic England High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme

North Norfolk District Council has received an agreement in principle from Historic England, securing funding to create a High Streets Heritage Action Zone in North Walsham.

The Council submitted a bid for up to £950,000, with the final amount subject to the successful completion of a Programme Design which will set out the Council’s plans for the historic town. An announcement is expected in January 2020.

The funding follows a successful bid to Historic England’s nationwide scheme that has been set up to breathe new life into historic town centres across the country.

Working with Historic England, North Norfolk District Council is looking forward to developing an ambitious design programme that will see improvements, restoration and repairs made to buildings of

historical significance in North Walsham, thus improving its townscape for the benefit of the strong local community and visitors to the town.

The successful bid for the funding was devised with the support of a strong local partnership and the Council intends to continue to engage with the community during the design phase. It will work together with North Walsham Town Council, Regenerate North Walsham CIC and other community partners to focus on how improvements can be made to enhance the town’s historic character while ensuring its long-term economic, social and environmental viability.

Dating from Anglo-Saxon times, North Walsham is one of Norfolk’s most historically significant towns. Its heritage stories are interesting and varied. From its medieval establishment the town was an important weaving town and the site of the final battle in the 1381 Peasants Revolt. Later the 1600 fire destroyed much of the medieval town and gave rise to the Georgian buildings seen in the Market Place today.

Paston College also boasts notable heritage links with alumni including Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson, who attended the grammar school in the 1700s and Stephen Fry who was more recently expelled from the college.

Cllr Virginia Gay, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Wellbeing, said “North Walsham is a wonderful mediaeval market town, with associations with Nelson and the Paston family. Its historic core is abundant with heritage assets, which will be a key aspect of its future regeneration.

“As well as the physical improvements that the High Streets Heritage Action Zone will bring, our project will help reinforce the pride that the town’s active community has in its cultural heritage. We are delighted to have the opportunity of working with Historic England to bring about the investments in North Norfolk’s most historic town.”

North Walsham gets a Community Fridge

On Thursday, 19 September North Norfolk District Council and with the support of environmental charity Hubbub UK launched North Walsham’s first community fridge in a growing effort to tackle food waste.

Follow our Activities

The fridge will be hosted by Café Kitale in St Nicholas Court, and will be open on weekdays from 10am-2pm. It is hoped this will enable residents and businesses to share surplus food and for anyone to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted.

NNDC is calling all local food businesses/allotment holders in North Walsham and surrounding areas to donate surplus food.

Ladies who Sing

The renowned local choral group ‘Ladies who Sing’, under the direction of Janet Kelsey, will give a concert in St Andrew’s Church, Holt on Saturday 19 October at 7.30pm.

The group is in demand as one of the leading chamber choirs in the region and is notable for its committed and polished performances.

The programme will feature music from 16th to 21st centuries and contains spirituals, folk songs, popular songs and solos, as well as some of the greatest pieces ever written for female voices by Elgar, Schubert and Gjielo. Mark Jones, organist at St Andrew’s, will also play a piano solo. Whatever your musical tastes you will surely be delighted by the offerings of this excellent group.

Q&A on Making a Will

There is a common misconception that Wills are only for older people, or maybe an individual doesn't have enough assets to worry about needing a Will, however if you have personal assets such as savings or a home it is important to have a valid Will in place, no matter what your age.

Q. at what point in their life can someone make a will? and at what point should they make a will?

Provided you have testamentary capacity, you are able to make a Will if you are 18 or over.

There are situations where you can make a Will under the age of 18, such as if you are a soldier in the military. You should consider making a Will, regardless of your age, if you wish to leave your personal possessions, house, money or investments to a particular person or people.

Q. what are your thoughts on the idea that wills are only for older people?

Wills are not just for older people, younger people may receive inheritance, own a property alone, or with a friend or partner, or be married with or without children, however these are all circumstances in which it is important to consider who your assets will pass to in the event of your death, and if the intestacy rules reflect your wishes.

Q. what advice would you give to someone who thinks they don't own enough to

make a will?

It is a common misconception that you have to have a certain amount in the bank or own a property/investments to be able to make a Will.

Even a bank account with a 'small' amount in will be paid in accordance with the intestacy rules and with modern blended families this may not benefit the person(s) you intend.

A Will doesn't just name beneficiaries, but it also appoints executors (those with the authority to actually deal with your estate on your death). Appointing executors means there should be no ambiguity over who can administer (deal with) your estate. A Will can also deal with your funeral wishes, again making your wishes clear in an already difficult time.

Q. the prospect of making a will can seem overwhelming, how do you help clients with that?

Salmon and broad bean chowder This summer has been exceptional for fruit and vegetables from the Grove gardens, and as always John’s beans are running riot.

We usually spend hours in exhaustive bean planning meetings to try to figure out the best way to get them onto the menu, and this summer we have been using them in a wonderful cockle chowder with our superb pan-fried halibut.

This salmon and bean chowder is probably

a little more simple and quicker to make; however any nice thick chowder makes an excellent accompaniment to fish dishes in general.

200g salmon (diced or whole) 10g chopped dill Salt and pepper (to taste) ½ lemon (to taste) 200ml cream 50ml white wine

1. Chop all the veg into thin slices and bite-sized pieces 2. Saute the veg with the salmon, dill and lemon 3. Deglaze the pan with white wine, add the cream and cook until the veg is tender and the salmon cooked.

4. Serve with lemon and crusty bread

Keith Skipper joins Sheringham Shantymen at Cromer Pier

On Thursday 17 October the Sheringham Shantymen, more than ably supported by Cromer’s very own Keith Skipper, will be performing at The Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier commencing at 7.30 pm. This will be the fifth in a series of charity concerts performed by this local and renowned group.

The concert will be in aid of the local RNLI stations at Cromer and Sheringham and also Nelson’s Journey.

We all know of the good work that is carried out by the volunteers of the RNLI, both the crews and shore-based helpers who make up 95% of the total workforce and all the money each year comes from public through donations and legacies left in peoples wills.

Perhaps less well known but equally necessary is the work carried out by local charity, Nelson’s Journey.

SHIPWRECK - a mixed media open art competition

Secret Postcard Art Auction & Exhibition

The annual Coast Arts open art competition has become one of the key elements of the festival.

at Thorpe Market Church, NR11 8UA on 18 -20 October 12noon - 4pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to bid for anonymous postcard sized works of art. You may find you have won a bid for a valuable art work.

All funds raised will go towards improving the exhibition facilities at Thorpe Market Church.

Encouraging artists from across the spectrum, the competition inspires both professional and amateur artists to create unique works for display, for sale and for fun! The theme for the 2019 competition is SHIPWRECK – in particular the legendary Fernebo wreck.

Closing date for artist entries EXTENDED to 5 October.

Competition entries will be shown in a pop-up exhibition on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October, 10am - 4pm, in the Education Room at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum, Cromer.

2019 Aylsham Model Railway Exhibition

There will be traditional American quilts (1900+) all made and hand quilted within one family in Kentucky, together with a large collection of modern quilts and wall hangings made to traditional block designs by local quilters.

The Broadland Model Railway Club is holding its 12th annual Model Railway Exhibition on Saturday 5 October in the Jubilee Centre at Aylsham from 10am to 4pm.

All proceeds will go to Project Linus UK to enable us to make more quilts and blankets for the sick children in the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Jenny Lind Department and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Walsham Drama & Singing Group (WDSG) invites you to their latest production, 'Streets'!

This is the Group's first production open to the public and features four powerful short plays written

by Group members and inspired by Ralph McTell's classic hit 'Streets of London'. The playlets cover themes of homelessness, regret and being forgotten.

We have an age recommendation of 14+ as there is some mild swearing and upsetting content.

Talks and events at Mundesley Library

As autumn arrives the leaves change colour, the children go back to school and Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) return with a new series of talks and events held at Mundesley Library.

The objects of this survey are: • To introduce NENBC members to the joys of seawatching.

• To help NENBC members improve their skill at identifying birds in flight at sea.

• To map the likely route of wildfowl, seabirds and waders as they fly around the coast.

• To estimate the speed of flight of some of the species recorded.

• To assess the effect of weather conditions and tide on the rate and timing of passage.

The first talk of the 2019/20 session will take place on Friday 11 October at 5pm when Peter Purdy from the Aylsham Roman Project will talk about this community archaeological dig – how it has grown in importance since its beginnings in 2016 and what has been discovered. Watch for further details on poster sites in the village and on Facebook.

Whilst details of further talks are still being finalised we aim to provide an eclectic mix of speakers to rival last year’s sessions which covered subjects ranging from the railway at Mundesley to the work of Wild Touch (featuring a giant tortoise walking round the library).

There is no need to book but if you want to let the leads know to expect you, please drop them a note. To get the most out of the event, we would advise coming along for the whole 3 hours but ‘part timers’ will always be welcome at any point!

MLF are trying to increase usage of the library by broadening the range of events offered and showing that the library is about more than just books.

If you would like further details of the talk, the work of MLF or ways you can get involved please talk to staff at the library.

You may want to bring a folding chair each, rather than standing for 3+ hours!

Busy Summer at Dance for Fun

The girls at Dance for Fun have had a fantastic summer dancing to entertain people at school fetes and carnivals around the area.

They were delighted to win first place in the walking category in North Walsham Carnival with their under the sea entry.

The girls are now in rehearsals for their annual Christmas production at The Atrium in North Walsham on Saturday 7 December. The show will start at 7pm and tickets are £5 on the door.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Malcolm, plus Little Joe, another of our kittens, have been re-homed and several other cats have also been reserved.

As mentioned last time, answering the telephone can prove demanding and does take up lots of time. Many of the calls we receive are for queries we cannot help with. People will often ring for advice regarding their cat’s health and behavioural problems and, unfortunately, we are unable to help them. Although we have been looking after cats for over 19 years now, we do not have the knowledge and expertise needed to offer advice that veterinary surgeons and nurses have. Similarly, when people ring to advise that they believe a cat is being mistreated, we do not have the authority to take action; the RSPCA, however, can help with these. People are also often under the impression that they are phoning an office and expect instant action. However, when they ring Stephanie, they are actually talking to someone in their own home!

Continuing Mylee’s story. It was decided we should give the medication on a daily basis, applying it by syringe directly on to her gums. We also introduced an additional medicine, Atopica, also by syringe on a daily basis, which had apparently proved to be beneficial for other cats. As her mouth improved, we were able to dispense with the pain relief. By the time she was due to have her booster vaccination, her mouth was completely clear of lesions. However, we had to take her off the Atopica two weeks before this could be given and also for two weeks afterwards.

As there was no adverse reaction to coming off the Atopica we decided we would not start giving it again, especially as this was the one medicine she hated taking. Her mouth now looks nice and healthy and I am also able to administer her usual medication at home rather than make a daily trip to the vets. We do, however, continue to see lovely Jo each week to make sure everything is looking good and to pick up the medication which must be kept in the fridge. We may need to continue

with this treatment but it is so worth while to see Mylee looking fit and well again, although at present a little on the plump side!

Irene, one of our fosterers is very excited as she will soon have two lovely new pens installed in her garden. These are made of PVC and are Mylee, helping unwrap a box bigger than the original wood of Cats Protection goods ones we had when the branch was set up and much easier to clean. Another of our fosterers, who has two of these pens will shortly be giving up due to health problems, so if anyone is interested in becoming a fosterer please give Stephanie a call. Years ago cats used to be kept in very small pens and had no room to exercise, so great progress has been made in recent years to improve their standard of care while with us.

Although bigger we still abide by the guidelines set out by Cats Protection for the number of cats to be kept in each pen and not to put cats together that come in separately.

Pictured are two hoglets who came into care on Bank Holiday Monday along with their mother and two other siblings as the nest was disturbed.

A week on and their eyes are open and looking very cute!

I have another mother who has given birth to four. On 30 August a large female who I am fairly sure is pregnant came in as she was found out during the day. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and should not be out in daylight - the exception is a busy mum taking a break from the nest but she will be moving quickly and out only for short spells. Even young ones who have left the nest should be sleeping during the day and coming out only at night seeking food and water.

Air Cadet Achievements

2110 (North Walsham) Squadron cadets have been busy already this month. During the Squadron’s annual inspection Luca Wedge-Clarke was promoted to the highest cadet rank, Cadet Warrant Officer. The award was presented during the inspection parade

by Squadron Leader Kevin Green.

Over the weekend of 7/8 September three cadets were honoured to participate in a sunset ceremony at Wensum Valley Hotel. The Spirit of Coltishall Association have an annual Battle of Britain Dinner at the hotel and invited the cadets, as the closest squadron to the old RAF Coltishall, to

Our case this month is a 13 year old oriental cat called Pippin. Pippin happens to belong to a member of our family and had spent much of the summer in France where she seemed very content enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Unfortunately on her journey home she stopped eating and lost a dramatic amount of weight in a short space of time.

Once she was home she was brought in to the surgery and we could see she had become jaundiced and suddenly very weak.

Blood tests demonstrated a high white blood cell count and raised liver enzymes so we put her on a drip and performed an ultrasound examination of her abdomen.

If flying, and much more interests you, North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 17 years. They are currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers.

Unfortunately, the ultrasound scan demonstrated a large mass within her liver, however, the rest of her organs and internal lymph nodes were largely normal. In order to give us more information we took ultrasound guided needle samples of the mass to provide us with more information.

These samples are very small, but can be taken under sedation, without the need for general anaesthetics or invasive surgical procedures. They identified that Pippin has a form of liver cancer, but hopefully not an aggressive form. Due to its position in the middle of the liver it would not be possible to remove the whole mass so she was started on medications to treat the inflammation within the liver. Within a few days she was eating again, behaving like her normal self and is no longer jaundiced. Although her long term prognosis is still guarded we are already a month on and she is coping well with an excellent quality of life. Fingers crossed she continues to do well for as long as possible, but it is a good reminder of how well patients can do sometimes even when they look to be on their way out.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh Lifeboat volunteers had a busy twenty-four hours at the end of last month with five taskings from HM Coastguard.

It started at 4.10pm on Friday 30 August when the pagers alerted the crew to a 40ft Sunseeker cruiser with engine problems, taking on water off Waxham. She was on passage to Lowestoft with four persons on board. The station’s Atlantic Howard Bell was launched with Sean Thurston at the helm and Martin Gibbs, Will Baker and Chris Rigsby as crew. When they arrived alongside the cruiser the engine had been restarted but was still taking on water.

Martin Gibbs went on board the cruiser with the salvage pump and the lifeboat escorted the cruiser to Great Yarmouth before returning to Happisburgh, being back on service at 9pm.

This was the first time Sean Thurston had taken the helm of the Atlantic since passing out

as helm ten days earlier. Sean said ‘it was great to put all the training into practice for real’.

Then on Saturday 31 August the pagers went off again. This time the D-Class Russell Pickering was launched to Walcott to reports of four persons in the sea ?inflatable. Russell Pickering was soon on its way with Tim Grimmer at the Helm and crew of Sean Thurston and Will Baker. On arrival the crew found the four persons were ashore so beached the D-Class and carried out casualty assessments before handing over to the Ambulance service.

An off duty policeman had used a board to go out to sea and get the persons ashore. The Coastguard asked the Lifeboat to do a coastline search for him to make sure he was OK. He was not located and was believed to have left the beach.

The Station’s Atlantic was also paged for this

search but was stood down as the D-class had handed the casualties over to the ambulance service.

No sooner had the crews returned to the station when the pagers were set off again, this time to a small dinghy with engine problems off Walcott. Howard Bell was dispatched to the scene with Sean Thurston on the helm and Tim Grimmer and Will Baker as crew. When alongside the dinghy they found the engine had been restarted.

The crew were then tasked by HM Coastguard to a person who had swum out to recover a ball from the sea. The crew soon located the person close to the beach and watched him reach the shore, then returned to the dinghy and escorted it safely back to shore.

Howard Bell returned to station and was then ready for service again.

Tim Grimmer, Senior Helm, said ‘people need to be aware that after the beach at Walcott has been rebuilt and the public are able to use it again, when there is an offshore wind there is nothing to reduce the force and effect of the wind so all inflatables should be tethered securely to the beach to prevent them being blown out to sea.

The first callout to Walcott was four persons who had fallen out of an inflatable and if it had not been for the brave actions of the off duty Policeman it could have been a different story.

Enjoy the beach but be safe and if any problems then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’

It was an entertaining afternoon when members joined in with a sing-a-long with singer Felicity and her dad.

Felicity sang songs from the 1950s and 1960s with a medley from the Beatles. It was a great afternoon.

The raffle raised ÂŁ35. It was great to see a couple of new members who had started for the first time.

An historic moment for North Walsham War Memorial Hospital happened 100 years ago this month.

A foundation stone was laid which marked the start of a hospital which has brought treatment, care, and comfort to generations of patients – and a bevy of babies into the world.

Work on the hospital did not start until 1923 while the funding was completed. It was opened in August 1924 by Princess Marie Louise. Over the years it has carried out minor operations, and provided post-operative and rehabilitation care – as well as a maternity unit.

It was demolished in 2011 to be replaced by a new unit the following year. The original site is now a wildflower meadow.

Over the past decade the Friends have provided ‘extras’ worth around £400,000, ranging from a new training suite, and refit of the day room, to presents and carol singing to cheer up patients at Christmas.

Friends chairman Keith Jarvis said “We didn’t want this important centenary occasion to go un-noticed, so we thought we would make it happen again.

“The hospital was built using funds and land gifted by local people, after a public meeting earlier in 1919 voted unanimously to provide a hospital in memory of the men who gave their lives in the First World War.

“Although today’s rebuilt hospital is run by the NHS, it still has a big place in the hearts of local people because of the care it provides. And the Friends continue to rely on public support for funding the ‘extras’ the NHS cannot

Aylsham Chess Club’s New Season Tournament

Following successful stands at The Aylsham Show and a Farmers’ Market, Aylsham Chess Club organised a rapid-play tournament to give 16 new and returning players the chance of some preseason practice.

The tournament was supported with prizes kindly provided by Aylsham’s M&S BP Garage and Budgens of Aylsham. Matthew Perry, from Aylsham, was the overall winner (with a perfect score of 5 out of

5). The runner-up was John Wickham from Taverham (with a score of 3.5 out of 5).

Council to install electric charge points in public car parks Project aims to make electric vehicles accessible

NNDC’s Cabinet has approved a proposal which will see the installation of Electric Vehicle Chargepoints (EVCs) in seven car parks across the district.

The project, estimated to cost around £250,000, will be funded jointly by the Council and The Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV), a cross-Government team which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles by helping councils to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow their introduction.

Subject to the OLEV funding, it is expected that EVCs will be installed in NNDC owned car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Fakenham, Wells and North Walsham, as well as some at the Council offices in Cromer. The installation should be complete by spring 2020.

The proposal aims to meet the expected rise in demand for electric vehicles from 200,000 to 6 million on the road by 2030. It has been identified that most current Electric Vehicle users will charge their vehicles at home. By installing these facilities in areas where many nearby properties do not have their own off-street parking, the

Council aims to provide charging points and make EVs more accessible to all residents and visitors.

Additionally, the proposal will support the economies of local towns as the charging points will be available to visitors to Council car parks, as well as residents.

The project forms part of NNDC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with the Council seeking to make its own operations carbon neutral by 2030.

Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We are delighted to bring forward this new initiative which will see 38 Electric Vehicle Chargepoints introduced across the District. This is just the first step on the Council’s path towards delivering our new ‘greener’ agenda. Whilst we are working to reduce our own Carbon footprints we want to help residents and visitors to play their part too.”

SWIMMING CLUB

For the first competition of the season Norfolk Vikings took a small team of six girls ranging from 9 to 16 years to Thetford.

Head Coach Sam Watts, for whom it was the first gala in her new role said “It was a great achievement for all those who have qualified for the Norfolk county championships in January 2020.We walked away with 12 qualifying times and 14 personal best times, 11 medals and areas to work on in the coming weeks.

Sandscaping Community Fund Awarded ÂŁ25,000 awarded to local community groups

North Norfolk District Council has the pleasure of announcing that the Sandscaping Community Fund recipients have been decided.

ÂŁ25,000 was gifted to the Council by Team Van Oord, the contractors responsible for delivering the Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Scheme, to distribute as community grants to parish councils and constituted groups in Bacton, Walcott and Paston.

No project was too small with applications for funding starting from ÂŁ100. Fourteen projects will benefit from the funding including building a pavilion for a new play area, completing the installation of solar panels at a wildlife centre, and new sports equipment for a local youth club. Team Van Oord has also offered volunteer time from its team to assist with three community projects.

It was encouraging that nearly all the applications were deemed to have a strong enough benefit to the wider community that most could be granted full or partial funding for their projects. Those that did not receive full funding will, if eligible, have another opportunity to apply for a grant from the Council’s Big Society Fund.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Coast, said “We are very grateful to Team Van Ord for this donation to our communities. I should also like to thank the whole team for being so considerate to our residents during the huge upheaval that had to be tolerated during the summer. North Walsham Table Tennis Doubles cup gets season underway

The new season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League is underway. The six North Walsham teams return with the inevitable summer shuffle of players while the presence of a new fifth team for Mundesley (increasing the overall number of teams in the League to 28) has prevented Beta from regelation. North Walsham Alpha, Beta and Cobras line up in the Premier Division, Echoes and Foxtrots in the First and Delta in the Second. The other story of note from the break is that Gresham's School A do not return to look for a seventh straight top flight title – there are two teams of juniors representing the School in the Second Division, but not the former all conquering adults team in the Premiership (although some of those players have switched clubs) which

should made for a more open competition this year.

The first round of the Knockout Doubles Cup got the new season underway. At North Walsham Sports Centre, Foxtrot's David Binns, Tom Wardle and Jim Crossley hosted LCC Lobster's Tim Dawson, Clive Hedges and Char Edwards with Binns and Crossley winning the opener in four against Dawson and Edwards.

Binns and Crossley later beat Hedges and Edwards in four but the tie turned on the third battle of the night where with the teams locked at one win and two sets each, Dawson and Hedges took the last two points from 9-9 in the fifth against Binns and Wardle. Three wins in straight and one in four saw Lobsters to a 5-2 win. The adjoining table saw a derby between

First they overwhelmed Woodford 63 -14 , then they faced far sterner opposition in Shelford but still came away with a bonus point, winning 29 -14. Relegated Shelford, who have recruited heavily and include many players who have played at a higher level, are widely expected to be amongst the promotion challengers, so it was a significant victory.

The two games were very different. Woodford found the Vikings’ fast and skilful backs far too difficult to contain and most of the nine tries came from well executed movements often from deep. The match at Shelford was played at a much faster pace, defences reigned supreme, space was at a premium and scoring opportunities few

and far between. Ultimately the Vikings won because of their superior defence and their ability to grasp the few scoring opportunities that were created. Newcomers Ethan Sikorski and Callum Anthony (pictured) have shown themselves to be valuable additions to the squad, the latter being named Coltishall Red Lion Man of the Match at Shelford. After two games only the Vikings, Southend, Eton Manor and Colchester were unbeaten.

Every Step Counts – Coastal trek a hit for Air Ambulance challenging.

Among the 24 mile trekkers were several former EAAA patients and EAAA Critical Care Paramedic, Rod Wells. Some 24 mile participants even chose to run the route, or run a mile then walk a mile. On average, it took the 24 milers eight hours to walk the 24 mile route, including stopping for breaks.

On Sunday 8 September more than 200 people took to the Norfolk coastline to complete either a 24 mile or 24 kilometre walk for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. This is the first time EAAA have held the Trek 24 event – designed to raise awareness and funds for the charity’s mission to fly 24/7 from the end of next year.

The Trek 24 event is expected to raise over £70,000 for the charity, which needs to raise an additional £1 million each year (bringing the total funds needed to £13 million a year) in order to develop and deliver a 24 hour helicopter emergency service in East Anglia.

Taking in the stunning Norfolk coastline, 123 people braved the longer walk, from West Runton to Holkham Hall, over Beeston Bump and along a great distance of shingle, which made this walk especially

90 people completed the 24K route and on average walkers took four – five hours to complete the shorter walk, including stopping for breaks. Among the 24K trekkers were former EAAA patients, the EAAA Aftercare Team and EAAA CEO, Patrick Peal.

The EAAA Trekkers were blessed with a bright sunny day with a refreshing cool breeze.

The walkers were kept well energised and motivated by volunteers at several cheer and refreshment points along the way, with a hot meal waiting for them at the finish line in the grounds of Holkham Hall.

Alison Brett, Head of Aftercare at EAAA, who completed the 24K walk, said “It’s been a wonderful day. This has been a great event for some of our patients to aim for in their recovery and I’m really pleased to have completed the 24K walk with some of my team. We even had a former patient who has overcome several injuries complete the 24 mile walk – just incredible. I was so pleased to be there for him at the finish line.
