North Walsham Archive Calendar
The North Walsham & District Community Archive are delighted to announce that their 2020 calendars are now available and we have managed to hold the prices at £5 each again this year thanks to the overwhelming support of local businesses advertising in the publication. This is the 5th calendar in the series which started with the 2016 edition.
We have thousands of photos in the archives and new ones arriving regularly. We picked more great photos for this edition which represent the variety of aspects of the town's history, some only recently discovered. We have used only photos which we felt would reproduce beautifully at A4 size and we have managed to fit in more photos than any previous calendar and more useful dates onto the calendar grids themselves. Still produced in North Walsham and printed locally using the best quality printing techniques and paper possible to make a beautiful calendar worth keeping for years to come and an ideal Christmas present for anybody locally or historically minded.
North Walsham & District Community Archive has always endeavoured to collect as much photographic history of the town as possible, to keep it safe for future generations and to make it available to the public.

North Walsham Archive Calendar
Continued from front cover... Our beautiful calendar has quickly became a firm favourite with those who grew up in the town and remember ‘the good old days’, newcomers to the town interested in its history and to those lucky enough to grow up here but who now live further away - as copies are sent all over the world, via our website. The calendar is as collectible as it is practical. This year we've also added some useful, local dates in their appropriate squares to make the calendar even more useful as well as collectable. Producing a calendar is a great way to safeguard photos for future generations because it doesn’t matter how you store photos, all types of media will deteriorate, become damaged or be lost. We digitise all the photos we find to the best possible quality we can and then we make back-up copies, but the more copies of these photos that exist, spread over so many locations, means their chances of survival are that much greater. Therefore by owning one of these calendars you are helping the community safeguard its valuable photographic heritage. A calendar also supports our mission statement to make the photos available for all. We have a very successful website and Facebook group but we are aware that not everybody has access to the internet so the calendar will allow absolutely anybody to own copies of these photos. The North Walsham & District Community Archive calendar is also a great way to raise funds for the Archive group which in turn enables the group to work even harder to make sure our town’s heritage is not lost forever.

Any profit made from calendar sales will, as always, be used by the North Walsham & District Community Archive for future projects such as the recent acquisition of a whole collection of original glass half-plate negatives of the town from 1911-1914. This would not have been possible without the funds we raise from our calendar sales and Atrium exhibitions so we are very grateful for the public's support. A photo from the recently acquired collection has made its way into the 2020 calendar.
Calendars are available from Swallows Coffee Shop, Express Printing & Stationery, North Walsham Community Shop and North Walsham Heritage Centre, all in North Walsham town centre, none of whom make any profits for themselves but sell them to support the group and its projects. The calendars will also be available via our website at www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk as usual.
The North Walsham & District Community Archive has been running over 12 years now, managed by a hard working group of volunteers with backgrounds in history, local photographs and the local area.
Our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/NorthWalshamArchive has now been running for 6 years and is as active as ever with over 6,700 members! It’s free and easy to join, and you will be able to view thousands of photos from the history of the town and discuss those photos and memories with other members.
Thank you for your support.

The Importance of Fraud and Scam Awareness
With the winter months drawing near it can be a difficult time for our more vulnerable loved ones and can unfortunately make them targets to fraudulent individuals. That is why Home Instead Senior Care Norwich and Clapham and Collinge solicitors recently teamed up to offer a free Scam Prevention Workshop for older people, family members, carers and people throughout the community.
The workshop held on the 23rd September offered advice and guidance in supporting your loved ones to help them feel safe and secure in their own home. As the home is no longer only targeted by doorstep sales-people and cold callers but also nuisance calls, texts and unwanted post it is important that we take steps to prevent this invasion of privacy and security.
Citizens Advice research shows that almost three-quarters (72%) of people surveyed had been targeted by scammers over a two year period. Over a third, had been targeted five or more times. Home Instead Senior Care and the team at Clapham and Collinge Solicitors have identified some ways your loved ones may be targeted and offer suggestions of preventative measure.
on your legitimate communication. • Similarly if you receive an Email from a company/provider asking for your bank details do not follow their instructions. Contact the company/provider directly or if you have an account on their website sign in and check for any new messages.
If you receive any of the above phishing attempts make sure you report them to the organisation the individual is claiming to be from, they will confirm whether it is genuine or fake correspondence.
unwanted Calls and texts Unfortunately sales calls are a product of our society and an unwanted nuisance. Our information may not be as secure as we would like it to be and we have all had calls asking if you had recently been in a road traffic accident.
A scammer may pretend be to calling from your bank, service provider or another trusted company with the intent to access your information or bank accounts. It is important to not give out any personal details and if you are not expecting the call – hang up.
Clapham and Collinge are proud to provide the local community with an extensive range of private client services across North Norfolk.
if you would like to enquire about our private client services please contact us on 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk
Doorstep Salespeople and Cold Callers Door to door sales techniques can often include a very pushy and intimidating pitch with the aim of selling a service or product to an individual that may not necessarily require that service/product.
As we all know these pushy pitches are easier to avoid when you are not in a face to face scenario, we would suggest that you or your loved one take care in answering the door unless they have previously arranged a visit.
online scams The anonymity of the internet presents opportunity for would-be scammers without the risk of being identified. You may be approached through various different methods of direct communication such as Email or social media or indirect methods such as fraudulent websites, viruses and fake dating sites.
You can take the following preventative measures to protect yourself and your loved ones from these common scams.
• When entering payment details always check the web address starts with a secure extension of 'HTTPS' for example 'https://example.com/' • Make sure you or your loved one have up to date Anti-Virus software. • If you receive a suspicious Email from an individual claiming to be your gas, energy or another supplier do not click any links or download any attachments contained within the email. Search for the provider's website yourself and make an enquiry or call the number provided

Action for Children
Brass gives boost to hospice appeal
A Norfolk hospice appeal has been given a brass band boost after a successful concert at North Walsham.
North Norfolk support group is looking for new members to support the children’s charity Action for Children The North Norfolk support group helps raise vital funds for disadvantaged children across the UK. The group formed in 2008 and has raised over £50,000 for Action for Children since it started.
The national Oddfellows Brass Band, from Leicestershire, filled the parish church, and the coffers of the Priscilla Bacon appeal, with notes. Tunes ranged from poignant war themed music and a stirring version of Abide with Me, to upbeat pop from the Beatles and Stevie Wonder. The concert was organised by the Walsham-based Trafalgar branch of the Oddfellows, and raised around £700 – most of which went to the £12.5m hospice appeal, with a donation to the parish church.
The group supports the children’s charity in many ways such as store collections, table top sales, afternoon tea parties, bucket collections, the list is endless. All donations go to helping Action for Children.
Action for Children’s vision is to ensure that every child and young person in the country has a safe and happy childhood and the foundations they need to thrive.
Action for Children deliver services throughout Norfolk ensuring children have the best start in life. The early years of a child’s life are crucial in determining their future and can influence their learning, their physical and emotional development, and their social mobility. Action for Children provide ante-natal support and breastfeeding advice to parenting programmes and early years education, getting involved from the first years of a child’s life. Catching problems early, stopping them from getting worse, or preventing them happening in the first place.
The group meets quarterly to plan and organise up-coming events which take place alternately at North Walsham Methodist Church and Aylsham Methodist Church. The next meeting is 4 December at North Walsham Methodist Church at 7.30pm. We would love to see new members there. Action for Children makes a vital difference to the lives of children and young people in your local community. If you’re looking to undertake some fundraising or would like to join a local group and meet new people, then please do get in touch with Holly Canham. Either call 07738502120 or email holly.canham@actionforchildren.org.uk to express your interest.
Oddfellows Trafalgar branch officials, and Mark Nicholas from the Priscilla Bacon Fundraising Team with the Oddfellows band during the charity concert at North Walsham
Trafalgar development officer Angie Batson said “It was a brilliant evening of music from the band who last visited the town in 2012 and the amount of money we raised surpassed our expectations, so we are delighted.”
Find out more about the Oddfellows, their events and membership benefits at www.oddfellows.co.uk, the Trafalgar branch’s Facebook page or call the North Walsham office 01692 407852.

A Poem for Halloween
All Hallows’ Eve All Hallows’ Eve will soon be here, When children go out, spreading ‘terror’ and ‘fear’. Collecting treats from neighbours and friends, Whilst dressed up in costumes as darkness descends. As night falls, the air fills with weird ghoulish howls Of werewolves and warlocks, witches and owls. All kinds of fiendish creatures appear, To the neighbours with whom they’ve been friendly all year! Sweets are dispensed by kind, liberal hands, To delighted young children who make these demands … “we’ll play tricks on you, unless you pay us off.” So tricking or treating is just a trade-off. Thank goodness this mayhem comes just once a year, Then all little horrors and ghosts disappear! Frances Wraight

New services for people in North Walsham in November
Volunteers needed
More services for people in North Walsham will be running from Saxon Court from November 2019. The services will include day care service which until recently has been run at Meeting Hill and the Voyager (Wednesday) and Friday groups at St Nicholas and St Benet’s Church Hall.
The services will continue to be run by Aylsham based Aylsham and District Care Trust, a charity that has been delivering services for vulnerable and elderly people for over 30 years. The premises at Saxon Court have been made available through partnership working with Victory Housing.
The charity and members will say a fond farewell to Meeting Hill as it has been a place that many people have spent happy times. Delivering services at Saxon Court in North Walsham town centre will mean that more people can access the opportunities available and the facilities are well equipped, warm and welcoming.
ACT has been looking for an alternative location in North Walsham for the last few years. The Meeting Hill premises, although loved by members are not large enough to accommodate the increasing local need and access for vehicles has been a challenge.
Additional services and opportunities will be added in the coming months. The programme is in the early stages of planning and will be based on local need.
Volunteers are urgently required to help serve and clear up after the lunch time sessions. if you could manage one day a week from 12noon until 1.30 pm that would be very much appreciated. Please call alison on 01263 733385 if you could help

more members and support should see us attaining parity soon. The visit from Germany this year is always our biggest financial hit costing just shy of £1,700 but well worth every penny.
You know the old adages ‘come to church early to get a seat at the back’ or ‘don’t go to the AGM or you will end up on the Committee or with a job. Well, at our very recent Annual General Meeting neither of the above applied. The front row, as all the others, was occupied left to right and front to back. It was very pleasing for myself and the committee to have all but a full house.
The risk of a job or committee service did not materialise as the present committee all stood for re-election and were duly voted back into office. We are now into the early stages of compiling the list of those wishing to visit Friesenried (23 to 28 July 2020) and hope to book flights soon. If this appeals to you please get in touch for more information and a trip that will both please and surprise.
The events of the past year were talked through with the pleasing information that all of our social events were well supported and the gap between expenditure and outgoings has been reduced. A bit more work,

Tony Bryant was our guest singer at the meeting on Thursday 3 October. He sang a medley of songs from Country & Western, 50s /60s & even gave us some instrumental guitar, playing ‘Apache’, original made famous by The Shadows.
It was a great afternoon – member’s faces showed what a good time they were having – along with waving hands and tapping feet.
It was also our celebration birthday of the Club first getting together in the late 1940s. The lovely birthday cakes were made by two members of the committee. The raffle raised £39.

We would like to thank the kitchen staff who voluntarily turn up every month to put on a tea for us and there is also a special thanks to one of the ladies who gives some of her spare time to make the birthday sprays - they always look so lovely and fresh.

Beware Fireworks
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Missing Girl between Walcott and Ostend
As we enter Autumn we move towards Halloween and Bonfire Night which can bring a certain stress to our pets. This comes in the form of fireworks. It is estimated that 45% of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. If any of you have a pet with a noise phobia, you will already be aware of how stressful it can be, but there are things we can do to manage the problem.
Happisburgh volunteers were called into action earlier this month to help with a search for a girl missing around the Walcott area.
By preparing in advance before the fireworks start your pet will be better able to cope with the noises. Aim to walk dogs during the day when there are less likely to be fireworks set off. Once the fireworks start close the curtains and put some music or TV on to muffle the sounds. It can be helpful to provide a safe and secure den for your pet to feel secure in. If the problem progresses or you pet seems very stressed then it is sensible to seek the advice of a behaviourist or vet who may be able to help modify the behaviour and reduce the anxiety.
HM Coastguard paged the crew at 9pm to help with the search; Mundesley Lifeboat, the Police and Bacton Coastguard were already searching when we were called.
By 9:10pm Howard Bell was on the water with Tim Grimmer on helm and Martin Gibbs and Chris Rigsby as crew, tasked to do a coast line search up the towards Walcott. HM Coastguard then tasked Russell Pickering with Jake Munday on helm and Sean Thurston as crew, to recover two Police officers who had been searching the beach towards Happisburgh and found themselves cut off by the tide.
Howard Bell was soon informed that the girl had been found cold and wet and she had walked off the beach. Russell Pickering soon arrived where the police officers were and worked their way through the old revetments to the beach, picked up the officers and transfered them to Howard Bell to be taken to Walcott ramp. They were then transferred back to Russell Pickering to be put ashore.
Our case this month is lovely dog called Hugo, who presented with a swelling under his jaw. He is only 3 years old and very well otherwise, but the mass appeared suddenly and grew to a large size quite quickly. Medical treatment failed to resolve the lump so he was taken to surgery where the mass was carefully excised. Once it was removed it was opened up to find a perfectly preserved grass seed that had been moving under the skin for a number of weeks! Fortunately it had not damaged any important structures in the area and he is recovering well. Hopefully there are not too many grass seeds around to cause problems this year, but it is a timely reminder to be vigilant and watch out for them come next spring.
Toby Morrell MRCVS
Both boats returned to Station and were rehoused and made ready for service by 10:30pm
On 13 October Happisburgh’s Chairman attended The Justice Service in Norwich Cathedral at the invitation of Lady Agnew, High Sheriff of Norfolk.
Happisburgh volunteers were then called into action the following day to help with the search for another missing girl missing again who was also found safe and well.

It’s Full Autumn out there and that can only mean one thing: the return of possibly the best United Kingdom bread and butter pudding in the European Union (as you read this there may not be time for anyone to prove otherwise!)
The secret ingredient is Ann Graveling’s Silver Medal World Championship-winning marmalade, with which residents of Overstrand Road are very familiar thanks to the burgeoning roadside marmalade pit-stop outside No97. In fact people have driven for hundreds of miles for this very spread and, if it’s all gone, disgruntled shoppers have been known to lay siege to the front door demanding replenishments.
Overstrand Road is often brought to a complete standstill due to impatient marmalade-hunters, and although Ann cleverly shifted the blame for recent congestion onto Anglian Water we all know the real story.
Arguably the best way to try this legendary marmalade is within Reis’s equally legendary bread and butter pudding – available on the menu every night, 6-9pm – 01263 512412 to book your table!
Bread and Butter Pudding
ingredients: 1 x 800g loaf of brioche (two if not using croissants) 3 x croissants (helps if not absolutely fresh) 200g white chocolate 4 eggs (whole) 2 oranges (zest) 350ml cream 100ml milk 100g caster sugar Small jar of Silver Medal-winning marmalade (available from 97 Overstrand Road) 150g cranberries (dried)
Method Line a 32cm brownie tray with baking paper
Slice the brioche into slices approximately ½ cm thick
Melt your white chocolate
Place layers of brioche in the bottom of the tray, overlapping slightly
Add a reasonable amount of marmalade, cranberries and chocolate over the brioche
Thinly cut your croissants and follow the same process as above, alternating croissants / brioche, until full
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
14
In a bowl, whisk your caster sugar, eggs, milk, cream and orange zest until mixed sufficiently
Add the mixture to your tray in drips and drabs until it had all soaked in and leave overnight in the fridge
Preheat oven to 160dc, 320df, gas mark 3
Cover with baking paper, then tin foil, bake for 45 minutes on middle shelf, remove tin foil and paper and return to oven for a further fifteen minutes or until golden brown and risen.

Mega Tea Party to Celebrate Guild’s 40 Years
The members of Norfolk Countryside Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers certainly know how to celebrate in style. On 28 September they hosted a tea party for nearly 80 people at Ludham Village Hall to mark the 40th anniversary of the Guild’s founding.
The hall was superbly dressed for the occasion. Bunting abounded and examples of the Guild’s finest work were showcased in an exhibition running down each side of the hall – woven tapestries, felted work, baskets, tassels, braids, skeins of yarn and beautiful garments from hand spun/hand-dyed yarn. The centrepiece was a magnificent wall hanging made jointly by the
Guild members on the theme ‘Ruby’ to commemorate this special anniversary. On the stage was an enchanting array of spinning wheels lit by fairy lights. The centre of the hall was laid out with tables of 6, each with a table cloth and cake stand full of dainty treats.
NCG Members Gerry McAree, Jane Davis and Sue Mitchell – credit Ros Wilson
Sue Mitchell, the Guild’s Chairman, opened the festivities with a short speech, saying how proud she was to be part of such a talented Guild. The Guild was founded in 1979 as part of the National Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. Now with 60 members, the Norfolk Countryside Guild is thriving; its weekly meetings

are always a buzz of activity. Guild members are incredibly generous with their knowledge and workshops are run regularly throughout the year.
Textile artist and Guild member, Ros Wilson, then gave a fascinating talk on the history of red dye from biblical times to the present day, showing samples of historic dyestuffs – a madder plant, cochineal beetles and wood shavings from the brazil wood tree. At the conclusion of the talk, Ros was invited to cut the special Ruby Anniversary Cake, made by Carol Boyes and Sally Bishop. Tea and coffee were served to all the tables and even more delicious cakes were available from a running buffet. There was such an abundance of food provided by Guild members that the remaining cakes were donated to a local charity for the homeless. The Norfolk Countryside Guild is keeping alive the ancient crafts of weaving, spinning and dyeing. It is a shining example of how craft and creativity bring a sense of well-being in today’s throwaway society.

Weather with Ned Nimbus
The past three months never really settled down - fine weather in short spells with hot conditions then average conditions although, at times, long periods without rain - but once that had corrected itself it didn’t know when to stop!
September did not live up to predictions, being a lot less influenced by high pressure so less settled and wetter as the month went on.
The next three months look to repeat the pressure theme of the past six months with the weather very much influenced by the Atlantic so changeable and with a variance in temperatures as winds switch from warmer quarters to cooler quarters with each passing weather system.
Any cold outbreaks are not high on the radar - typical weather for us about sums it up. Ned Nimbus

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
A recent departure from our pens was Gracie, another cat very popular with everyone who has been in contact with her. To see Gracie now, as opposed to when she joined us is remarkable. Initially, we thought she was a very old cat as she was very thin and in terrible condition. With lots of loving care her health and condition improved and she did leave for a new home which unfortunately proved unsuitable as she intimidated the resident old dog. We believe she was probably trying to be friendly but obviously the dog did not. However, she has now settled in a new home as the only pet and is enjoying the love and care she is receiving from her new family, who are delighted with her. This tiny little cat did not have a good life before joining us but is now reaping the much-deserved benefits of a very loving home.
Being confined in a cat pen is not the normal environment for a cat and although some cats will settle quite happily, especially if they have arrived from a stressful situation, others will find it challenging and will not be seen at their best. It is therefore important to remember that the cat may behave differently when it goes to its new home and does need time to adapt to its new surroundings. We usually advise that the cat is initially confined to one room and gradually introduced to other rooms as its confidence improves. In the first few weeks it is also important to ensure that, until the cat is properly settled, all windows should be kept closed and the cat’s whereabouts monitored before opening doors. Because cats can be unpredictable, we do on occasion rehome a cat that will decide it has” landed on its paws” on leaving its carrier and will explore the whole of its new home and settle down, once its inspection is complete, on a nice comfy chair or settee. Whether they settle straight away, or need time to do so, it is important to let the cat do it at its own pace rather than try to force the issue.
both new owner and the cat. The cat will often be quite timid and hide because it is new to the area and there are no familiar smells to help him. The more confident cats have generally been reunited quite quickly although there have been instances where we have had to lend a cat trap to help get the less confident ones back with their new family.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This Phoebe, lovely friendly girl, number is for vouchers only 8 years old and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

I have hedgehogs come in from many different locations but I was rather surprised when I received a call from Corks Funeral Directors! They had found a small hedgehog in the back garden. This little fellow only weighs 100grms and would not have survived much longer outside. What else could I call him but Corky!
Over the years several cats have escaped through a window or door soon after joining their new family and this has resulted in a worrying time for
On a sad note Stephi from last time was examined at the vets and found to have two broken legs so the kindest thing was to be PTS.
I will be at Norwich Road Garden Centre in North Walsham on Saturday 26 October between 10am to 3pm, with information leaflets, and depending on the hogs hopefully bringing one with me.

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary.
Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off.
Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off.
It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats!
There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce
anxiety around firework season. Pheromone-based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.
It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed.
As November creeps up its time to start thinking about Firework season and what we can do to help our pets.

Local choir to perform East Anglian premiere of new Requiem
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society’s 2019-20 season begins at 7pm on Saturday 23 November in St Peter’s Church Sheringham with Songs Ancient & Modern, a lovely blend of old and new music including popular works by Mozart, Haydn and Fauré. The programme also includes the East Anglian premiere of an exciting new Requiem by Dorset composer, Matthew Coleridge who comments "Requiem is my first major composition and most frequently performed work. Far from being inspired by, or in memory of, a lost loved one, I wrote the majority of it in the months following the birth of my son. I hope this brings an optimistic, affirming and uplifting mood to the music. I was determined to avoid any clichés of angelic harps or fires of hell, and chose to take a more human and earthly approach - something more akin to the Requiems of the middle ages and Renaissance.
Much of the writing is in the manner
of Gregorian chant, with numerous melodic ‘threads’ woven together into a rich tapestry of sound. The solo cello became a vital part of the music from some of the earliest drafts, providing a counterpoint of light against dark.
Whenever the choir are singing about loss or sorrow, the cello sings a song of hope and
David Ballard conducts Sheringham and Cromer Choral singers in concert comfort." The late Sir Neville Mariner said of the work "a valuable addition to 21st century choral repertoire".
Time for the town to shine!
Although it is only October the Christmas lights team have started erecting the lights once again for this year.
We know it’s early, we know we haven’t had Halloween or bonfire night but unfortunately due to the small team of volunteers, some weeks only four, we have to start early to get everything done for the switch on.
We offer our volunteers a hot drink and bacon roll or vegetarian option for anyone willing to give up their morning. For more details about helping please message us or email jeabol@aol.com or alternatively come down and see us Sunday from 9am in the town centre.
This year’s switch on event takes place on Saturday 30 November and as normal the main switch on will take place at 6pm. More details will follow in the next edition.
Other works on the programme will be Joseph Haydn Insanae et Vanae Curae, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Missa Brevis in Bflat K.275, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ave Verum Corpus and Gabriel Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine.
The concert will be conducted by the Society’s musical director, David Ballard with soloists Zaira Palumbo, soprano; Graham Northwood; counter-tenor, Simon Mulligan, tenor and Andrew Weeks, bass plus organist, Philip Adams.
Tickets cost £15 on the door, £12 in advance, under 18s FREE from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office telephone: 01263 822347 boxoffice@sheringhamlittletheatre.com or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

Need a LIFT?
Council provides training for local businesses North Norfolk District Council made a successful application for a Local Investment in Future Talent (LIFT) grant towards the cost of skills training workshops for people employed in small businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector such as bed and breakfast establishments, cafes, restaurants and leisure activities.
The council surveyed members of Visit North Norfolk to find out what training was needed and the best time to hold the workshops. Customer Service was indicated as the highest priority, followed by digital media skills and
marketing. As a result from this response from local businesses, the Council have gone on to offer such workshops which will be held in venues across the District from November 2019 to February 2020.
There will be a full day Customer Service workshop, delivered by the Welcome to Excellence initiative, the most successful accredited customer service training in the UK. Additionally, there will be half day Digital Media and Marketing workshops with introductory and advanced options to ensure that businesses have the best opportunity to develop new skills or hone existing ones.

The fund-raising event was a huge success raising £2245 for the Chairman’s chosen charity of the year – Norfolk Wildlife Trust. During the evening an auction was held with some unusual lots, such as unique experiences including a ride in a Tiger Moth at Langham Airfield and pieces of art.
Cllr Clive Stockton, North Norfolk District Council’s Chairman, said “I am

Norfolk District Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance, said “I am so pleased this grant application was a success, enabling us to put on a fantastic resource for the tourism and leisure industry, which is a significant part of the local economy here in North Norfolk. These sessions will serve to strengthen key skills and give businesses in the District the tools to grow and develop with confidence.”
Full details can be found at North Norfolk District Council’s events page with booking links. Alternatively please email economic.growth@north-norfolk.gov.uk or telephone 01263 516331 or 01263 516009 for more information.
absolutely overjoyed that the evening was informal, relaxed, with some 70 persons present and the auction itself raised such an exceptional amount.
The auction was carried out free of charge and therefore the total raised has been donated to my chosen charity. This will contribute to two strands of work being carried out by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust – the “Children and Nature” project and heritage grazing programme.
The auction was only possible because of the most generous support of the 22 donors who gave such fantastic lots and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to them and to the auction house who facilitated the event.”
The reception marks the commencement of a series of school and community events including tree-planting sessions taking place across the district with the aim of raising funds for Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s ‘Sure Start’ centres which focus on educating children and encouraging them to get in touch with nature.
Sure Start centres are part of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Children and Nature initiative. It creates wildlife-friendly areas outdoors where children can get involved with nature through wild walks and educational sessions.

North Walsham Table Tennis Magnificent Marceli
The League itself got underway with three Premier Division derbies at North Walsham Sports Centre. The first saw Cobra's Mark Blackburn and Robert and Marceli Gabriel host Alpha's Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and new signing Robin Thaxter. There were opening wins in straight for Robert Gabriel and Thaxter against Beane and Blackburn respectively. The third battle saw Marceli Gabriel – who has jumped up two divisions from playing in the Second division last season to playing in the Premiership this one – against six-times North Norfolk Championship finalist Baldock-Yaxley. Gabriel led both the first and third sets 10-8 and took his fourth and third set points to claim those sets en route to completing a stunning win 13-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-7. Beane then fought his way to a win in five against Blackburn. Robert Gabriel came from behind to win the first set against Baldock-Yaxley 12-10 and had three set-points at 10-7 in the second. The Alpha saved those and had a chance of his own at 11-10, but Gabriel closed it out at the fourth time of asking to take the set 13-11 and with a two set lead there was no stopping him as he dominated the third. Comfortable wins in straight followed by Thaxter and BaldockYaxley against Marceli Gabriel and Blackburn respectively and Beane made it three wins for Alpha in a row with a four set victory against Marceli. The final singles pitted Thaxter against Robert Gabriel – the former won their
League encounters last year but was beaten in the Championship semi-final. Here, Thaxter's heavy chop and strong serving dominating the opening two sets. Gabriel had chances at 10-7 in the third but Thaxter closed out the win 14-12. The Gabriel's combined for another impressive win in the doubles as they beat Beane and Baldock-Yaxley in four, but Alpha won this close derby 6-4. Next Alpha's Andy Beane, Robin Thaxter and Richard Westgate hosted Beta's Stuart Hook, Colin Smith and Ben Lester. The nine singles all went Alpha's way with Smith picking up a set against Westgate but Beta sprang a surprise in the doubles as Smith and Ben Lester hit some fantastic winners to beat reigning North Norfolk doubles champions Beane and Thaxter 12-10 in the fifth.
The third top flight derby saw Beta's Ben Lester, Stuart Hook and John Vaughan host Cobra's Phil Stone and Robert and Marceli Gabriel. Marceli's consistency on the forehand wing saw him to a brace – in three against Hook and four against Lester. Hook's moonballing got Stone tangled up in knots, but the Cobra captain saved match-point during the fourth before winning in five and later used 'push blocks' to register his first win over Vaughan after twenty odd years of battles in four sets. Robert Gabriel dropped just the one set against Vaughan as he took a maximum. Beta fought back from 0-7 to take the final
success is their defence: well organised, they soak up the pressure, biding their time, forcing errors.
Six games into the season the Vikings were four points clear at the top of the table with a 100% record.
The table could however look very different by the end of the month third placed Eton Manor were due to visit Scottow on the 19th and this Saturday (26th) the Vikings travel to second placed Colchester.
In the past month they have beaten Chingford (59-13) & Brentwood (45-14) at home, and Haberdashers (24 -7) & Priorians (28 -7) away. They are playing exciting rugby with many tries coming from movements starting in their own half. Quick to spot scoring opportunities they switch from defence to attack very quickly. three points as Vaughan won a five set battle against Marceli Gabriel, strong consistent attack from Lester beat Stone in four and Hook and Lester edged the doubles over the Gabriel's 12-10 in the fifth. Other matches in the Premier Division saw Mundesley A beat Beta 9-1and Alpha beat Backhanders 8-2. In the First Division Echoes lost 6-4 to Crosscourts, beat Mundesley C 7-3 and then won yet another derby against Foxtrots 7-3 with the latter also drawing with Dolphins. The first two rounds of the Knockout Singles Cup has also taken place with Cobras winning the first 6-3 against Poachers before losing 5-2 in the second to Mundesley A. Winger Jim Riley (pictured) has been in irrepressible form with 13 tries and one of many candidates for September’s Coltishall Red Lion Player of the Month. Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters eventually chose Jake Duffield, “he’s really matured and is now one of the League’s best scrum halves. “The big negative was a season ending injury to flanker Chris Godwin, a big influence on and off the field.
