The wide range of help includes giving ‘one-off’ practical assistance around the house and garden, transport to get to medical appointments, befriending visits and help with filling in forms. They also ‘signpost’ callers to other, more appropriate, services.

The Mayor, Gary Bull, was thanked for attending the event and local people who have benefited from the scheme expressed their appreciation for the help they had received. A raffle was held which raised £100 to help meet the scheme’s running costs.

Market stall with a difference – we were collecting not selling!

Rotarians in North Walsham are working with local charity The Benjamin Foundation to support young people, moving from sheltered accommodation, to set up their own homes for independent living.

Thursday 11 October was the day it rained mugs and cutlery on market day in North Walsham, as local people responded to a ‘call to arms’ by the Rotary Club by bringing mugs and cutlery to the Rotary Stall.

“The response was gob-smacking" says organiser Patricia Williams. In the space of just three hours nearly 200 mugs and a substantial quantity of cutlery including 'canteens' were handed over.

“Thank you so very much” she said, “your donated mug, knife, fork or spoon shows North Walsham is a community that cares for its own, and will make a big difference to the work of the Foundation.”

She was amused to recount that during the time the stall was open a number of people came up to buy items, thinking they were for sale.

This gave an opportunity to explain the project and talk about the work that Rotary Club and The Benjamin Foundation were doing.

The Club is currently involved in a number of local projects, including the Boudicca Cancer Appeal which aims to support the creation of a new specialist cancer unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

The Club’s annual Race Night held at the Community Centre in February will raise funds for this worthwhile cause.

Cadet Donation

The Spirit of Coltishall Association [SoCA] have honoured North Walsham Air Cadets with a £50 donation.

Led by Flight Sergeant Orson Ayers, Corporal Oliver Godfrey and Cadet Noah Webb attended the SoCA Battle of Britain Sunset Ceremony David Welsh presents at Wensum donation to Cdt Noah Webb Valley Golf Club and, to the strains of the Last Post, Cpl Godfrey lowered the RAF Ensign. In recognition of this the Association presented the squadron with a donation which will help all the cadets with various projects in the future.

John Summersgill from SoCA also attended and spent some time talking to cadets and staff and seeing the activities that the young cadets are involved in. Cadet activities include, flying, gliding, shooting, radio operation, adventure training, camps at RAF Stations in the UK and abroad and the chance to earn useful qualifications such as first aid, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and BTECs,.

Medieval Marriage

‘The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there’; so said L P Hartley as the opening lines of his novel ‘The Go-Between’.

I recently heard a presentation which included a run-through of English marriage and divorce laws through the ages. It amused me; and thought it might amuse you. It is truly alien territory.

In the early 7th century, under the code of Ethelbert, the legal penalty, if a man ‘took a maiden by force’, was that he had to pay her guardian (not her) 50 shillings (i.e. £2.50 in decimal money), and afterwards he could buy from the guardian his consent to marry her.

Presumably the former-maiden’s value would have been much diminished and it would have been an easy solution for the men. The cost of consent would be 20 shillings (£1) if she was betrothed to another man. We do not know the cost if she wasn’t betrothed. There was a 35 shilling (£1.75) refund if the woman was ‘returned’.

The Welsh laws of the same era stated that the grounds for divorce were leprosy, impotence and bad breath (only one of the three was necessary). There was recognition too of the

‘seven year itch’. On divorce after seven years the money in the marriage was split equally. Before the 7 years the division depended on the woman’s status by birth (regardless of the actual size of the common pool of matrimonial property). This presumably meant it was financially risky for a man to marry a posh but poor young woman – much better for him to find a rich but vulgar girl!

Before the arrival of the Normans, if a woman found her husband with another woman, she was entitled to payment of six score pence (about 46p, I calculate) the first time; £1 the second time; and, on the third time she was entitled to divorce him. If a husband kept a concubine, his wife was allowed to punch her.

After the Norman invasion things got worse.

Under the French invaders, a wife became a ‘sort of infant’ and her legal identity ceased to exist. A husband and wife on marriage became one person and the wife’s property was surrendered to the husband. This included her clothes; and so, the husband would usually give his wife her clothes by his Will; otherwise, presumably, if he died, she would quite literally walk away naked.

Many of Jane Austen’s novels turn on the importance of marriage to save the family fortunes.

And so the matrimonial property dark ages continued until the Victorians introduced the Married Women’s Property Acts. There were four of these from 1870 to 1907 and the final one, shockingly, was as late as 1964. Women became legal entities in their own right, could keep their earnings and own property.

Remembrance Tide in North Walsham

On Sunday 10 November the events will commence with a short service at the War Memorial in the Park at 1415 hrs. This will be followed by a march to St Nicholas Church leaving at 1430 hrs. A police car will lead the parade with space allocated to veterans or members of the public who use Electronic Powered Vehicles (EPVs) who will immediately follow the police car. Then the Standards with the veterans leading the parade will be followed by representatives of the youth organisations in the town. All former veterans are invited to take part in the march to the Church.

A Remembrance Service in St Nicholas Church will take place at 1500 hrs and during the service wreaths will be laid by the Town Mayor and representatives of other organisations. On Monday 11 November a short service will take place at the War Memorial Hospital just before 1100 hrs when a moment of silence will be observed with wreaths being laid by a representative of the Friends of the Hospital and by a representative of the local branch of the Royal British Legion. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Revised Plans for Holt Railway Station

Back in 2015 a group was established at the request of the Board to examine how the Holt site should be developed to complete the original vision of a country goods yard first planned way back in 2004.

The design was presented to the Feb 2017 Members’ Forum at The Links and was well received; however, the price tag was expected to be in the region of £3m or so including all the surrounding street works.

Back then there was a realistic prospect of obtaining a majority grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund given its museum and educational purpose. However, all that changed in 2018 when the HLF changed their policy on grants and ceased to make large sums available. This led the Board to reappraise what we can do and at the meeting in September they approved a ‘bronze’ scheme for Holt rather than the original ‘gold’ scheme.

So, what exactly is ‘bronze’? It is a scheme that delivers virtually the same output for visitors as the original big scheme but not inside a large B&Q style shed, so it can be built incrementally as funds are available.

The original scheme would have required a significant lump of cash even to erect the

basic building as there are many competing demands on the railway’s finances!

The first part will be arrival of Reedham Jn signal box in late February. This is still subject to confirming planning permission with NNDC, but we aren’t expecting any push back as discussions first took place 2 years ago (but we must never assume anything until we have it writing!). The top half will arrive, be repaired and then be erected onto a new concrete foundation.

Eventually it will become a “have a go” simulator where visitors can try their hand at signalling. This will then be joined by a range of other buildings and we are scouring the county for abandoned pw huts that we could dismantle and move to Holt and re-erect next to the box. So, over a period of time the yard area will be filled by a range of buildings that allows us to demonstrate all the aspects of railway working. There will need to be a new buffet building and replacement for the institute and the railway cottage will move down from the gate. (This in turn will eventually allow the buffer stops of the headshunt to be pushed back towards to road to give us a longer platform 2).Regrettably this has meant that we have not been able to renew the model engineer’s lease that falls due in January and they have to find a new home.

NOVEL AND ENGAGING LOCAL THEATRE

Am-dram is as Am-dram does, we know what to expect, or do we? Just occasionally you walk into a gem of a production that you couldn't have anticipated, certainly not from the venue anyway.

'Streets' was four plays based on the four verses of Ralph McTell's 'Streets of London', written, produced and performed by the members of the Walsham Drama and Singing group. The subject matter was downbeat, obviously.

You can't put on four plays about loneliness, homelessness, sadness and remorse without confronting the subjects head on. And that's what they did. Cleverly interweaving some humorous elements that could have come across as glib in the hands of people less skilled.

Yes there were the odd timing issues, yes there was the occasional fluffed line but we are in a church hall and these people are not only putting on this very compelling and thought provoking show but they've also written it themselves. The result – a very well-acted, directed and produced collection of work that really needed a bigger audience. The fact that all those concerned had put in a staggering amount of work for a 'one night show' really exhibits their determination and professionalism.

If you didn't see it, well you missed out. If you did then you'll know just what I'm talking about.

Well done to everyone involved in this novel and engaging piece of local theatre. An enjoyable and thought provoking show that rewarded all those willing to brave a cold October night in the name of amateur dramatics.

Meet Lily! This gorgeous girl is a regular visitor to Toll Barn Vets as she suffers from the relatively rare Addison’s disease and requires regular check ups.

It was at one of these regular appointments when her owner mentioned that Lily’s abdomen appeared more swollen than normal. Our veterinary surgeon examined Lily and confirmed that her abdomen had become full of fluid. This can happen for a number of reasons including heart disease, infection, liver disease and tumours and so the decision was made to admit Lily to our hospital so we could fully investigate the cause of the fluid accumulation.

Luckily for Lily the Toll Barn Vets on-site facilities meant she could relax in our hospital whilst we performed blood tests in our inhouse Laboratory, and ultrasound

scans of her heart and abdomen in our diagnostic imaging suite. These tests ruled out many of the causes of fluid accumulation but were unable to diagnose the problem.

Our team then performed a CT scan using our state-of-the-art on-site CT Scanner and this revealed that poor Lily was suffering from a liver lobe torsion – a disease where one of the liver lobes twists around itself cutting off the blood flow to the affected liver lobe. Knowing this can be a lifethreatening emergency, the Toll Barn Vets team performed life-saving surgery that same evening to remove the affected live lobe

and prevent further tissue necrosis (tissue death) and toxin release.

Patients suffering from live lobe torsions are at high risk of blood clotting disorders, toxin release and changes to blood pressure and heart rhythm (arrhythmias) and the Toll Barn Vets dedicated nursing team used specialist monitoring equipment throughout her surgery and recovery. Lily has been a superstar patient and thanks to the swift actions of her owner and our team has beaten all the odds and made a full recovery. Always remember that as an owner you know your pet better than anyone and even a small change could be a sign of a significant problem, so if in any doubt contact your vet to discuss your concerns and hopefully keep your pet fit and healthy.

Toll Barn Vets Raise Record Amount for Macmillan

It’s all waggy tails at Toll Barn Veterinary Centre after holding their Macmillan Coffee Morning on 27th September. A huge £900 was collected, their highest total since holding the yearly event.

A big thank you to all who baked, bought and donated, as well as all the staff who hosted the coffee morning.

The money raised is ring fenced by Macmillan Cancer Support to help local people in North Norfolk who are living with cancer, and their families. Thank you everyone!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Among the recent departures from our care was a young cat called Olga. Although she arrived at 6 weeks old, the ideal age for kittens from outside situations to come into care, she had taken a long time to adjust and to learn to trust us. When her new owners contacted us offering to give her a home, we explained that she was still very timid with strangers and although we knew that she would be happy in a home eventually, it would take time and patience for this to happen.

Fortunately, they were prepared to let her take all the time she needed to adjust even before they went to see her. Asked for advice as to the best way to introduce her to their home her carer suggested that when Olga arrived, they should confine her to one room with her litter tray, food and water and gradually introduce her to the rest of the house.

Unfortunately, the door to the room was left open by mistake so Olga was able to get into the other rooms and went into hiding. Although it took a little time for them to locate her, her new family were not concerned by this set back and just moved everything into the room in which she was hiding. Having set up cameras in their home they knew that she was coming out as soon as they went to bed, to eat and use her litter tray. They were even aware that she visited their bedroom during the night. Within a very short time we received good news in the form of a video of this dear little cat, sitting on a chair, looking around her new home and also doing a spot of grooming. Although still not a lap cat she will now climb over her new owners’ laps and also sleeps under their bed. Her new family are very happy with their new companion and we are very pleased that they were patient and let her decide when she was ready to trust them. One very good result and one happy little cat.

We are keeping in touch with Bassanio’s new family Peggy, one of the older kittens at present in and are hoping that the care results of the latest tests will identify the problem and the treatment needed to resolve it.

Another recent departure from our care, a little cat we called Bassanio, has had health problems since leaving us. He was one of the kittens that came in with cat flu and then had an ulcer appear on his tongue while in care. This had cleared up before he left us but, unfortunately, another

On Monday 14 October baby hoglet Thimble arrived at only 20 gms, less than 2 weeks old with eyes still closed. I had to start by syringe feeding him approximately every two to three hours.

Now, two weeks on, his eyes are open and his teeth are coming through so he now has one feed in the morning and one at night. It is much too late for hoglets being born so he is a very lucky hoglet to be found.

Romans Invade Mundesley Library

Well, not quite. but the audience at the latest talk hosted by Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) were entertained and informed by Peter Purdy and Sheila Denny from the Aylsham Roman Project.

Peter, who owns the land where the dig takes place, explained that the Roman Project was a misnomer as artefacts had been unearthed from as early as 5000 BC and as late as the Middle Ages.

To date the project has discovered 29000 objects, each of which has been catalogued to record its exact position on the site. As part of the presentation, Peter and Sheila brought a selection of items, such as Roman pottery and roof tiles, found on the site.

The Outcome of 4by6 Secret Postcard Auction

Between 18 and 20 October Thorpe Market Church held a successful fundraising exhibition and auction of postcard-sized original artwork, donated by professional and amateur artists from across Norfolk and beyond.

A number of valuable artworks were donated including a handful of work by budding artists from Happisburgh School.

With thanks to the generosity of all the artists submitting, we raised a total amount of ÂŁ1125.80 towards the cost of new exhibition facilities for the church. A fantastic achievement!

We would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped hang the exhibition, bake cakes and invigilate over the three days. Much fun was had by all those who took part, bidding on multiple items or outbidding each other for firm favourites.

Stage Coaches at Probus

At October’s meeting of the North Walsham and District Probus Club our illusions about stage coaches with horses galloping through the snow, as they do on our Christmas cards, were well and truly shattered.

Our speaker Mr Charles Lewis informed us that in fact travel was uncomfortable, slow and potentially dangerous.

In the late 17th and early 18th century roads were rather random affairs for which the local parish was expected to take responsibility, animals were driven along the tracks, pedestrians and horse riders made their way as best they could and the wagon and coach drivers would pick their way around the ruts and stray rocks increasing the width of the track as they went. So, in fact, the roads were just very wide muddy slippery tracks.

In an effort to improve matters wealthy land owners who had an interest in a particular stretch of road were give permission to establish turnpikes, the road was gated and users had to pay a fee or toll in order to use it. In return the land owners were required to keep their stretch of road in good condition which made coach travel more comfortable.

Coaching Inns were set approximately ten miles apart and at each of these stages there would be a change of horses. Fresh horses and better roads meant that coach travel was much improved and the golden age of coach travel began. Passengers were able to buy tickets in advance and the coaches would follow a timetable so that connections could be made to different locations.

Nick adds Dame role to directing for milestone panto Panto dame Sarah the Cook has a three-course role at a Norfolk seaside theatre as it marks a special milestone.

Sheringham Little Theatre has been staging its own in-house professional pantos for a decade.

And to celebrate, Nick Earnshaw, the man who has directed five of them, is putting on his frock and make-up in a return to the stage as the dame - as well as being director and writer – for the ‘Dick Whittington and His Cat’ show from 7th December to 1st January.

A Very Special Supper

In our culture of excess, we could be forgiven for thinking that more is more; in fact, it is very much the case that smaller portions, and better quality, are far better for health long term. The habit of indulging in the ‘buy one get one free’ trap is not a blessing. Fish is not the cheapest ingredient to purchase, but just like meat we should be considering where we buy it, and not just how much can we get. I get my fish from fishmongers locally with good reputations for the best and freshest fish for 2 reasons; I like the personal interaction you get on the High Street, and I like to support local independent businesses. Our buying choices are powerful, and we should use them responsibly if we want to retain our wonderfully diverse High Street.

We are blessed in Holt with 2 fresh fishmongers that I definitely don’t want to lose! This is a meal we have once in a while as a special treat.

It’s not going to break the bank, but is certainly more than the average weekly meal. Incidentally, fish cooked this way is literally one of the easiest and quickest meals to do; no slaving over a hot stove for hours! It’s also a really impressive meal, with delicate flavours, fresh ingredients and great presentation, and great special occasion or dinner party dish. The trick is not to overcook. Trust the timing, and all will be well! This is also a guilt free way to enjoy chips, counting as one of your 5 a day, with all the indulgence of fries and none of the worry.

Push the boat out and serve with a beautiful crisp white wine – my favourite at the moment is Adnams White Burgundy, one of their bestsellers.

is cooked, heat the pan and add in the fish skin side down. Time it, and cook for 4 minutes, then add in a knob of butter and squeeze in the lemon juice, and carefully flip the fish over.

Almost immediately turn off the heat, and leave it for 1 minute, then flip back and serve, spooning over a little of the juice onto the fish.

Pan Fried sea bass with sweet Potato and Celeriac Chips and Long-stemmed broccoli sea bass Fillets (1 per person) ½ celeriac, peeled and cut into thin fries 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into thin fries Long stemmed broccoli (3-4 florets each) Splash olive oil Lemon pepper Fresh dill, chopped Coarse sea salt ½ lemon Knob of butter

Toss all the celeriac and potato fries in olive oil, lemon pepper and salt, coating them well. Put into preheated hot oven (around 190°) for about 30 – 40 mins, checking that they don’t catch and turning halfway through. Meanwhile, steam your broccoli towards the end of the chips cooking – it will need about 10 mins maximum.

Prepare your large frying pan for cooking the fish, by swirling a splash of olive oil in the bottom, and adding a handful of chopped dill and some lemon pepper. Once everything else

North Walsham Table Tennis Triple the Doubles

The attention turned to the second round of the Knockout Doubles Cup with three of the ties taking place on the same night at North Walsham Sports Centre as Alpha's Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Richard Westgate hosted Poacher's David Foster, Chris Fuller and Laura Marsh. Beane and Westgate won the opener 11-6, 12-10, 5-11, 12-10 against Foster and Marsh before Baldock-Yaxley and Westgate made it 2-0 to the hosts with a win in five against Fuller and Marsh. Poachers fought back to take the next three battles with a win in five for Foster and Marsh against Baldock-Yaxley and Westgate sandwiched between two wins in four. Straight sets victories were then shared between the two teams before Foster and Marsh sealed Poacher's 5-3 win in five against Beane and Baldock-Yaxley.

Over on the other side of the gym, Cobra's Mark Blackburn and Robert and Marceli Gabriel hosted Mundesley A's Paul Price, Simon Halliday and Peter Betts. There was a big momentum shift in the opener as the Gabriel's fought back from two down and had a lead in the decider, before Price and Betts hit back to take the fifth 14-12.

Blackburn and Marceli Gabriel had a chance to take the first before Halliday and Betts won in straight and the night of missed chances for the hosts continued as Blackburn and Marceli Gabriel had a match-point chance but were edged out 15-13 in the decider by Price and Halliday.

Mundesley moved 4-0 up with a win in four before the Gabriel's beat Price and Halliday in straight. Blackburn and Robert Gabriel had four match-point chances in the sixth battle – two at 10-8 in the decider – which again passed by as Halliday and Betts won another epic 14-12 in the fifth to complete a 5-1 win for Mundesley A – as often the case, the score not a fair reflection of the closeness of the tie. The middle table saw Delta's Sarah Tudhope, Tony Bispham and John Harris host Crosscourt's Rod Goffin, John Welsh and Keith Beswick. Crosscourts won 8-1 in a mixture of three and four sets with Tudhope and Bispham taking a point for Delta in four against Welsh and Beswick and later Tudhope hitting the shot of the week with an outstandingly fast forehand!

In the Premier Division Alpha's Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Richard Westgate hosted Aylsham Enterprise's Danny Atkins, Harley Dyson and Andy Latham with Atkins taking the opener 15-13, 12-10, 11-9 against Beane. Latham edged Westgate 12-14, 11-9, 11-6, 15-13, however Alpha won the remaining battles to take the match 8-2. This included a maximum for BaldockYaxley who was pushed closest by Latham – the Alpha player winning 11-6, 16-14, 9-11, 11-4.

The final three battles saw home victories all in five sets – Westgate beating Atkins after originally leading by two, Beane recovering from two down against Dyson and a doubles win for Baldock-Yaxley and Westgate against Dyson and

Latham.

In the First Division LCC Crab's Chris Gould, Chris Francis and Neil Edwards hosted Echoes' John Chapman, Frank Weston and Irving Watson. The hosts went 2-0 up with wins in straight for Gould and Francis against Chapman and Weston respectively and Gould later also beat Weston in three, however the visitors won the match 7-3. This included a maximum for Watson who edged Gould 14-12 in the third and all their wins were decided in straight sets with the exception of two as Weston beat Edwards in four and Chapman and Watson won the doubles against Gould and Francis also in four. Mundesley B's Ben Thomson, John Stacey and Silva hosted Foxtrot's Tom Wardle, David Binns and Phil Mole. Foxtrots won 10-0 but this also three five-setters as Wardle and Binns won the doubles against Thomson and Silva while Mole hit back from losing both of his first two sets against Silva 13-11 and later edged Stacey 14-12 in the decider.

Finally in the Second Division Aylsham Albion's Peter Forder, Ken Seaman and Nigel Arnold hosted Delta's Gudi Scham, Sarah Tudhope and John Harris. Delta won 9-1 including an intense 9-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-7, 12-10 win for Tudhope against Seaman. Forder picked up the point for the hosts from two down against Harris.

Ground-breaking ceremony for new Sheringham Leisure Centre Significant milestone as building work begins

pod’, a type of swimming pool lift, will be available for safe and dignified entry into the swimming pool, offering greater independence for people with a wide range of mobility difficulties.

The ground has officially been broken to mark the beginning of construction work to build a multi-million-pound leisure centre in Sheringham, expected to be completed in summer 2021.

A moving floor on the smaller pool will allow the water depth to be changed for different activities and user groups such as swimming lessons, water confidence and toddler sessions and aqua fit exercise classes. A colourful splash pad and learner pool for children to enjoy and where they can improve their confidence in the water has also been included in the design, and a range of portable, fun equipment such as inflatables will be offered during timetabled sessions.

North Norfolk District Councillors joined staff from Metnor Construction and Everyone Active to celebrate the major milestone in the development that will see the existing 31-year old ‘Splash’ replaced with a state of the art facility with lots of new features.

The new centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a 13-metre learner pool with an adjustable depth floor, fitness suite, community rooms, multipurpose studios, a spin studio and a café. The design has been progressed with the facility’s accessibility in mind and incorporates eleven dedicated accessible car parking spaces close to the building entrance, level access into the building through the main reception, automatic entry doors within the lobby area and accessible changing rooms.

The project, which supports North Norfolk District Council’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its residents, will ensure the provision of leisure and fitness facilities for local communities and visitors to north Norfolk is secured for the future. Splash will remain open while the new leisure centre is built on a different part of the site. The new leisure centre is due to open for summer 2021. Working with partners including Sport England, the Council is seeking to increase participation in sport which will contribute to an improvement in social and cultural benefits. The social and fitness spaces will help put the facility at the heart of the community.

On the ground floor, a dedicated ‘Changing Places’ facility will be provided which offers more space than standard accessible changing spaces and equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist. A ‘pool
