Christmas Lights Switch On

North Walsham Christmas Lights Switch On takes place on Saturday 30 November with the switch on being performed at 6pm by the Funday's Carnival Queen Chloe Kidd.

There will be stalls, rides and food and drink available in the town centre from 2.30pm and entertainment from 2pm all the way through to the switch on.

This year's entertainment includes NWHS choir, band Uncreative Love, Invidia Choir and the Salvation Army leading the carol singing before the switch on.

Father Christmas will be riding down the town on his sleigh before making his way to his grotto.

Chairman of the Christmas lights group, Colin Jeary, said “It takes a year’s worth of planning to organise the event and six Sunday mornings to erect all the lights before the switch on.

Christmas Lights Switch On

We are very lucky to have recruited several new volunteers this year which has meant the lights have gone up quicker. Each year around 250 volunteer hours is spent on the town’s lights, to make sure the town shines over the Christmas period. The lights are only possible by the generosity of the traders in the town who donate and the volunteers who ensure the lights are erected and working by the switch on”.

Colin added that it makes it all worthwhile when just before the switch on all you can see is a sea of people who have turned out to support the event “It’s a great feeling”.

War Memorial Hospital Pays Tribute North Walsham War Memorial Hospital held a short service at 11am on Monday 11 November to remember the 99 men from the town, and another 80 from surrounding villages, who gave their lives in the First World War and inspired the foundation of the hospital, though public appeal, in their memory and honour.

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind The Club met at the Community Centre on 7 November.

It was a dreary old day outside but the afternoon’s entertainment made up for the cold weather and the rain. Our entertainer was Roy Barrett who sang some great songs originally made famous by artists including Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Cliff Richard, Dean Martin and even sang a song by Hank Willians. Thank you Roy it was a pleasure to listen to you. The raffle raised £36.

Next month is our annual Christmas Meal at the Community Centre on Thursday 5 December which will commence earlier than usual at 12noon.

Cynthia's Christmas Fare will be at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in Worstead on Saturday 14 December at 2pm. If you would like a table they cost £5 - please ring Cynthia on 01692 536721 weekends or evenings. All proceeds to North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind.

Cromer Hospital receives £1m from Norfolk farmer’s legacy

The generosity of a Norfolk farmer is set to improve health services in North Norfolk after Cromer Hospital received one of its biggest ever donations.

The family of Douglas de Bootman have presented a cheque of more than £1m to the N&N Hospitals Charity after the retired farmer left the proceeds of his estate to Cromer Hospital in his will.

Mr de Bootman spent his life farming at Pentney, near Swaffham, before retiring and buying Church Farm in Thursford with his wife Janet.

“He was very active in his retirement up until three or four weeks before he died. He had quite a lot of land and used to get up early in the mornings and spent his time taking care of the grounds: cutting the grass, pruning the trees, chopping wood, etc. He was very skilled at carpentry, welding, and agricultural engineering.

He loved being outside with his Labrador and in his retirement took up painting, which it seems he had a natural skill.”

“He was such a quiet, sensitive gentleman. He and Janet enjoyed a few holidays in Scotland. My uncle liked a quiet life, in Thursford he had a few elderly neighbours who he liked to help and vice versa.

Chocolate and Blood Orange Tart

For filling 6oz Dark Chocolate 180ml Double Cream 1tsp grated blood orange zest 2tbsp orange juice 1tsp vanilla essence 1tsp orange liqueur 1 egg (beaten)

For tart Case 200g plain flour 100g cold butter 2 tbsp. cold water

Pre heat oven to 200c, rub butter into flour, then add water, slowly mixing until combined well. Let sit for 20 mins. Roll out to 1/2cm thick and mould into a tart case.

Bake in oven until golden brown.

Heat cream and zest until simmering, add chocolate and stir until completely melted.

Add orange juice, vanilla and liqueur and stir then add beaten egg and stir in thoroughly.

Let cool for ten mins then pour into tart cases and chill for 2 hours. For orange pre heat

the award-winning norfolk open studios, now in its 26th year, will run from saturday 23 May to sunday 7 June 2020.

Each year hundreds of artists take part in the scheme, inviting the public into their studios to reveal how and where they work.

The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2019 more than 31,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk.

Norfolk Open Studios Norfolk Open Sculptor Andy Jarrett Studios enables artists to promote and sell their work directly to visitors who can see artwork as it happens in the studio.

During Norfolk Open Studios 2019, 430 artists participated across 250 venues along with 19 Norfolk schools. Throughout the county artists came together to create 16 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and

The cost for inclusion in the scheme is ÂŁ110 for individual artists, ÂŁ300 for groups of artists and ÂŁ110 for schools. This includes a listing, profile and artwork image in the Norfolk Open Studios brochure with a print run of more than 30,000.

Artists will also receive an online profile on the Norfolk Open Studios website, showing a selection of their work, contact details and links to their website and social media channels – this profile remains published for up to one year.

Artists will also have access to marketing materials such as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to exhibit a piece of artwork at the Open Studios Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in the run up to the scheme.

Applications opened on Friday 8 November and close on Friday 13 December 2019.

All week days we will be out between 6pm and 8pm We are collecting with North Walsham Play this year and half the money is going to them and the other half going to local organisations. Last year we raised over £3000 for local organisations.

Maddermarket Theatre

Once a month, usually on the last Friday of the month, a coach party of people living in North Walsham and nearby villages leaves North Walsham New Road car park, around 6.30 in the evening, to go to Norwich's Maddermarket Theatre. We book for 6 months at a time.

At the end of the performance, the coach is waiting to bring us home. We are a friendly group of 40 to 50 people enjoying a regular relaxing evening in good company. The exact cost depends on the number booking for the coach, but usually works out at £70 - £80 (about £13 a time). This includes the cost of the seat, the coach and the driver's tip.

Next season, starting in January, includes an adaptation of ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’, an Agatha Christie and Arnold Wesker's ‘Chips with Everything’ - in all, a very attractive programme.

The lunch is held at the Community Centre on behalf of Churches Together. The use of the Community Centre is very kindly donated by its Management. Transport can usually be arranged if needed. Because of donations, of money or in kind, from charities, organisations and individuals, the meal is free. A retiring collection for a local homelessness based charity is available for anyone wishing to make a contribution.

The day for guests starts from about 12.30pm with a welcome drink, and ends between 3.30pm and 4pm, after the Queen's Speech and a final cup of tea and piece of cake.

We have a data-base for those who have been before, and they will already have been contacted or will be very soon, so don't need to do anything else, though if for some reason you have been missed please do make contact. But there will be others who have recently moved into the town or whose circumstances have changed in the last year - we would love to welcome you.

Cantamus Community Choir back with their very popular candlelit concerts

Maurice Colk and family would like to thank all who attended a Celebration of Wendy Colk's Life on Friday 4 October 2019 at Cromer Crematorium.

These concerts are performed in the candlelit atmosphere of Thorpe Market Church and West Runton Church.

A truly magical experience to get you in the right festive mood for Christmas.

We will be performing a Mass in G minor by Marc-Antoine Charpentier interspersed with Carols from mediaeval Spain, late18th century America, and 21st century England, as well as popular congregational carols.

12 December General Election Information Several new polling stations to be used by the Council

The UK shall be voting in a General Election on Thursday, 12 December 2019 with Polling Stations being open between 7am and 10pm across our district.

North Norfolk District Council has had to implement several changes to Polling Stations due to usual buildings being unavailable at such short notice. We very much appreciate the work that has gone into making our Polling Stations available for this election including the movement or cancellation of pre-existing bookings which had been in place.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Bassanio, the little cat mentioned last time is still on antibiotics and, although his new family can see some progress, more will be known when he goes back to see the vet next week. We will keep you posted of his progress.

The cats in care with Irene will shortly be moving to their new accommodation. While waiting for the new pens to be installed, the cats have been in the old pens which will in future be used for storage of food, bedding, cat litter etc. There has been a minor hiccup preventing the move as, due to the bad weather at the time they were being installed, water got in causing a drip and this needs to dry out before they take up residence. Irene can’t wait for this to happen as, at present, the goods which will be stored in the old pens are taking up room in her home and garage.

We were also delighted to be contacted by a family who will be joining the branch and taking over the pens at present with Marian, our lady in Briston, who although giving up caring for the cats for health reasons, will still be involved with other aspects of the work that we do. Work on the base for the pens will start next week and, once this is down and the tiles for the base have been laid, we will arrange for the pens to be transferred to their new base. In the meantime, the cats in residence at Briston will need to be moved, either to other pens, as and when they become free, or to our friend who runs a cattery and is always only too happy to help us out for holiday cover and emergencies.

Although the weather was good for the sale on the 9th we think takings will be down, hopefully not because someone removed our posters. At the time of writing the money still has to be counted. However, there is very good news on fund raising as the stall at High Hedges has taken an amazing £741.89 this year and this is despite some people taking goods and not paying for them. Many thanks to Sharon for all the hard work

Hedgehog Haven

Little Lucky was found on 9 November wandering down Hall Lane in North Walsham in the middle of the day. She could so easily have been run over. At 170 gms she was very cold and had to be gently warmed before being offered food. She was very poorly but is doing ok at the moment.

Hopefully you and your pets have eased into Autumn and the colder weather isn’t causing too many problems. Firework season seems to drag on for longer every year, so if you experienced any noise phobia issues with your cats or dogs then it is worth popping in to speak to your local vet practice to ascertain if there is anything more you can do before they ramp up again around Christmas.

For some reason this autumn we have been busier than ever with a huge number of emergencies coming through the door. In particular, dietary indiscretion emergencies, or more simply put, pets eating things they shouldn’t!

Along with a host of foreign body obstructions, which in the last two weeks alone have included dog toys, pine-cones, stones and bedding material, we had a very serious case of mycotoxin or fungus poisoning.

I’m sure many of you have noticed, but the wet, mild weather we have had recently has led to a huge amount of fungus and mushroom growth.

Dogs can be prone to sampling most of nature’s treats on a walk and one

such Labrador ate a highly toxic fungus. He was sick almost immediately before collapsing and being rushed straight into the practice. Blood tests demonstrated acute pancreatitis and he was hospitalised for supportive treatment with intra venous fluids and medication.

Unfortunately, only hours later his house mate went out into the garden and ate the vomit from earlier, which still contained enough of the toxin to cause the same reaction.

He too was rushed in and also had developed acute pancreatitis.

Thanks to the quick action of their owners both dogs survived, but it highlights the need to be vigilant with our dogs in terms of what they have access to and particularly on walks.

The calendar would make a fantastic Christmas present for those with a love of the great outdoors.

The Salvation Army North Walsham were pleased to recently welcome 13 new Adherent members into its midst, most of whom are new in the last two or three years. Some joined through lunch club, others through coffee morning, and some through the community band. An Adherent member is someone who sees the Army as its church, attends the meetings etc while not making quite the same commitment as a uniformed Salvationist.

Mental Health Awareness

The growing movement of Mental Health awareness has captivated the UK with employers and HR professionals championing the importance of having a good work life balance. Extra working hours, low wages and a need to increase earning capacity means that the balance of work and life can fall out of sync. As a result, the mental health of those employees is put in jeopardy.

what signs can Hr look out for in employees who may need help?

People with unhealthy work life balances may feel unhappy about being at and devoting time to work. If your employees/colleagues are showing signs of lack of motivation at work, distracted behaviour or seem unhappy at work, these may be signs that they need some help.

Similarly, those who seem to worry about work at home, those who are not developing personally outside of work or seem to be neglecting other aspects of their lives in favour of work, could be struggling with an unhealthy work life balance.

Head of Employment Law Nicola Strefford explains "Nurturing employees is the best way to ensure you are getting the best out of your workforce. Incorrect work life balance can affect productivity, absence figures and turnover for businesses so it's extremely important that employees are encouraged to have a correct work life balance and feel taken care of. We always advise clients to deal with issues

The North Norfolk support group helps raise vital funds for disadvantaged children across the UK. The group formed in 2008 and has raised over £50,000 for Action for Children since it started.

North Walsham Table Tennis Wins for Walsham

In the First Division, North Walsham Echoes John Chapman, Frank Weston and Irving Watson hosted Aylsham Norada's John Hall, Sally Homfray-Davies and Tom Mountain. Chapman got off to a flying start as he took the first set against Hall 11-3, but the Norada captain hit back to win in four. Two wins in four followed for the hosts as Weston beat Homfray-Davies in a close battle of few mistakes where both players controlled play before Watson edged Mountain 14-12, 12-10, 5-11, 12-10. Weston then won a close cat and mouse battle against Hall 11-8, 11-5, 11-13, 12-14, 11-3. The remaining six battles were all straight-sets affairs – Mountain took a brace and joined forces with Hall for a doubles win against Weston and Watson, but the hosts won the rest of the singles with Watson taking a maximum as Echoes won the overall match 6-4.

On the adjoining table, Foxtrot's David Binns, Jim Crossley and Tom Wardle hosted LCC Crab's Hayden Kerr and the Chris's Francis and Gould.

Gould recovered from two down against Wardle, only to be edged out 13-11 in the decider but the Crab went on to take a brace with two wins in four.

After losing the first 15-13 to Wardle, Kerr held his nerve to win in four. Each of the hosting trio took a brace and Binns and Wardle won the doubles from two down against Kerr and Gould to conclude Foxtrot's 7-3 win. The following week Wardle picked up a brace as Foxtrots were beaten 8-2 in their next match by LCC Lobsters.

At the ACT Centre. Aylsham Enterprise's Danny Atkins, Andy Latham and Harley Dyson hosted North Walsham Cobra's Robert Gabriel, Mark Blackburn and Phil Stone in the Premier Division.

Atkins took his third match-point to beat Stone 12-10 in the third (and to take bragging rights in the office!!) and his forehand stayed on fire as he defeated Gabriel 11-8, 11-6, 3-11, 11-9 and then completed his maximum with a tight 11-9, 15-17, 12-10, 11-13, 11-7 win against Blackburn, who had earlier beaten Latham in four. Dyson picked up a single against Stone in four while Gabriel took a brace including a 20-18, 11-7, 11-6 win against Latham. Stone and Blackburn won in five against Latham and Dyson respectively, having being pegged back from two up in both cases. The doubles saw Atkins and Latham beat Blackburn and Stone in straight to end the night as a draw.

On the adjoining table, Aylsham Hathor's Ray Gale, Peter Ward and Rob Ollman hosted North Walsham Beta's Colin Smith, debutant Paul Edwards and John Vaughan with captain Richard Porritt joining in the doubles. Vaughan picked up a maximum as steady and consistent play saw two victories in four and an 11-6, 15-13, 11-9 win against Ollman. Gale and Ollman both took braces including a 15-13, 6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9 win for Ollman against Smith but with wins for Smith and Edwards against Ward in three and four respectively, the doubles became vital. This was an incredible battle with players getting balls back that were out of this world and

It's been a memorable season so far for the Vikings. After nine games they were unbeaten, eight points clear in London One North on 44 points. Colchester were second and Southend third, four points further behind.

Maintaining their form is going to be difficult: opponents raise their game against leading sides, their playing style is better suited to the drier conditions of early and late season and the squad is very small.

In the Second Division, Seaflames Swordfish's David Houlton and the Graham's Masters and Moorhouse hosted North Walsham Delta's Gudi Scham, Tony Bispham and John Harris with Scham winning the opener in four against Houlton.

Bispham beat Masters in five before Moorhouse's crafty backhand beat Harris in straight. Masters recovered from two down to beat Scham before Harris focused hard and managed to return several smashes as he beat Houlton in four. Bispham then recovered from two down against Moorhouse, winning a key fourth set 13-11 and the decider 11-7. Masters won an entertaining game in three against Harris, before excellent play from Scham beat Moorhouse in five. Bispham was in control against Houlton as he completed his maximum and secured the win for Delta. The two Graham's won the doubles against Scham and Bispham in the fifth battle of the night to go to five but Delta took the match 6-4.

Meanwhile the Minis (pictured) are enjoying themselves. One of their Values is 'we are here to have fun, involve everyone.' "It's what the Minis are about," commented Minis Chair Emmett Young.

Ex-Premiership player Joe Beardshaw is amongst their Coaches and they recently enjoyed a training session led by Vikings players Jake Duffield, Frank Scott and Will Swart. There has been plenty of action too for the male Youth teams with the Norfolk Cup now underway. The Under 15s Girls beat Kettering in the National Cup with Peterborough their next opponents, whilst the whole squad attended the first of this season's Eastern Counties Girls Rugby Festivals.

October included two key games. After beating then third placed Eton Manor 45-19, they visited Colchester and came away with an impressive 31 -26 victory. The last match before filing this report was though agonisingly close, defeating mid table Sudbury 13 -7. "We just didn't turn up" said Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters.

North Walsham Fit Together Walks

saw Smith and Porritt prevail 1513 in the decider against Gale and Ollman to win the match 6-4. Elsewhere in the Division, Howard Lupton returned to help Alpha to two wins – 9-1 against Sharks and 10-0 against Aylsham Hathor. In their next matches, Beta and Cobras were beaten 9-1 and 6-4 by Aylsham Enterprise and Sharks respectively.

Amersham visit Scottow Park this Saturday (23rd) with the Vikings also at home on successive December Saturdays: Ruislip (14th) and Shelford (21st).
