Hospital Friends will help provide new relatives room An overnight stay room for relatives is planned at North Walsham War Memorial Hospital – paid for by public donations channelled through its Friends group.

The scheme, using a former team meeting room, will enable people visiting patients, who come from all over the county, to stay overnight and be close to their loved one.

It is among the wish list items for the Friends in the coming year outlined by chairman Keith Jarvis at the annual meeting.

Hospital Friends will help provide new relatives room

Continued from front cover... There are also plans to brighten up a brick wall view from a ward window with a cheery mural using the art skills of students at Paston College. Last year’s highlights included the opening of a £22,000 day The new Friends committee room revamp, new garden furniture and a shed for use by a new team of volunteer gardeners – as well as the usual Armistice Day service, plus festive gifts and carols for patients spending Christmas on the wards. Mr Jarvis said the Friends also added weight to staff concerns about introducing parking charges, which was dropped. They had stepped up liaison with the Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust which runs the unit to get a clearer picture of wider health strategy. Friends’ funds, mainly from public donations, gifts from grateful patients, and money in lieu of funeral flowers, were boosted by the previous town mayor Barry Hester making the charity his civic cause of the year, generating more than £4200. The meeting also updated the Friends rules, including streamlining its name to The Friends of North Walsham War Memorial Hospital, removing the words League and Cottage, to make it simpler for knowing how to label donations. Mr Jarvis, Secretary Angie Batson and Treasurer Carol Willgress were all re-elected. Other committee members are Richard Batson, Zana Jarvis, Margaret Johnson, James Plummer, and Sue Yaxley. Thanks were given to two long-standing committee members, Nancy Downey and Jim Hardy, who stepped down. For more information about the Friends, their work, how to get involved or to donate funds, visit www.northwalshamhospitalfriends.org.uk or the Friends Facebook page.

Spitting image?

by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

There is a long held stereotype of judges being old-fashioned. Judge James Pickles became a household name in the 1960s when he asked ‘Who are The Beatles?’ The reality is that the Law Courts are open to scientific developments to help them achieve justice.

The Courts have always had to address the question of parentage. It was the stuff of tabloid newspapers in days past. Today, as DNA testing becomes more accessible, the Courts now have to consider how to balance the benefits of DNA testing against the rights of the individual.

Jordan Rogers, a care worker, inherited a large country estate, after proving through DNA testing that he was the son of an aristocrat. That ‘rags to riches’ tale came two years after the exhuming of the body of the Spanish artist Salvador Dali for paternity testing.

The two most frequent uses are to prove or, conversely, to disprove, that someone is biologically related to a person who has died; usually, but not always, because there is an inheritance at stake.

Arguments have been put to the Court, by someone refusing to submit to DNA testing, that it is interference with their human rights. In response the Judge held that the interference was a proportionate means of protecting the

public interest in the accurate resolution of inheritance disputes.

Another case revolved on whether DNA evidence extracted from the deceased for medical purposes could be released to determine parentage. There, not to do so would have led to injustice, and so, the Judge gave permission for the DNA testing.

Where there are sound medical reasons, such as the treatment or prevention of inherited disorders or diseases, for the testing of paternity, and a medical sample is readily available following death, the Court can also order testing.

It has also been held that there is no infringement of a third party’s human rights by DNA testing, even if they find out that they have an additional grandchild. The appellant’s rights must be weighed against the respondent’s rights. Here, there is a slant in favour of the respondent, so as to err on the side of preserving the status quo. The Court is able to order directions where there is reluctance to cooperate.

In cases where there is doubt as to parentage, the only way that an executor of an estate can be certain that they are distributing the estate of a deceased person accurately, is to ascertain all the beneficiaries.

The improved ability to determine parentage through genetic testing is impacting on the law. A paternity test is generally cheap and painless and can be done using a hair or saliva sample; no blood or needles required! It is much cheaper than the production of witness statements and other evidence. Its great advantage is that it is both definitive and can help parties reach a settlement at an early stage.

Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

What’s On... Panto

From the creative team that brought you the last 10 years of Family Fun Panto, join us this festive season at the Little Theatre… where the streets are paved with fun!

This was the second year for this very successful and well supported event. The main hall of the St Benet’s Hall was full of gifts, crafts and stalls for all to enjoy in the run up to Christmas. Children’s activities, Santa’s Grotto along with hot/cold refreshments were also on offer for all to support. The event raised £670.25 of which all will go towards the fundraising efforts to secure a new Skate Park for Trackside.

Trustee and Founder Matthew Smith MBE thanked everyone who booked tables, attended on the day and gave donations in the run up to the event. He added “we are so pleased at the level of support by members of the community. The money raised really does mean a lot to our fundraising efforts to reach our £185,000 target”.

It’s been a very busy month for North Walsham Play having supported the town’s Firework display earlier in the month. In December, North Walsham Play will be supporting North Walsham Round Table on their annual Sleigh Appeal.

Plans are already in place for the 2020 Fayre! Check out our website www.nwplay.co.uk or Facebook Page to keep up to date.

North Walsham Poppy Appeal 2019 Raises in Excess of £15,500

A coffee morning was held at Shambles Café and Bar on Tuesday 26 November, by Mr Bob Shortis, North Walsham and District Poppy Appeal Organiser, to celebrate the completion of this year’s local Poppy Appeal, and to thank the many volunteers who gave their valuable time to make this year’s Poppy Appeal so successful.

The amazing generosity of the residents of North Walsham and the surrounding area has enabled this year’s local Poppy Appeal to raise some £15,500 to date.

Thanks to both Sainsbury’s and Waitrose supermarkets, for hosting Poppy Tables in their stores for the duration of the Poppy Appeal and special thanks also to North Walsham High School and the North Walsham Army Cadet Force (ACF), who did stints on the Sainsbury’s Poppy Table, the ACF braving the chilly weather to make a collection for the Poppy Appeal at the town’s annual fireworks display.

Thanks and appreciation to all the shops, businesses and local schools that hosted our collection tins and to the North Walsham Re-enactment Group, in genuine WWII uniforms and accompanied by a Willy’s Jeep, who raised money in the Market Place. This fantastic total helps ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises.

The membership of the Royal British Legion North Walsham Branch also thanks Dave Audley, the outgoing Poppy Appeal Organiser, for all his wise words and general assistance before and during this year’s Poppy Appeal. Bob Shortis, North Walsham & District, Poppy Appeal Organiser

I’m a panto star – get me out of here! Panto rehearsals have swung into action at Sheringham Little Theatre after the cast arrived at the seaside theatre to prepare for a special season.

It is the 10th anniversary of the venue staging its own professional pantomime. And an action-packed Dick Whittington and His Cat features a Victorian ‘steam punk’ style adventure taking Dick from Norfolk to London, with plenty of fun, song, dance, special effects – and even an ‘escape room’, where the audience helps solve the clues.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “This is a special anniversary year for us, and it is great to have lots of popular regulars joined by youngsters like Harry and Lucy who have grown up at this theatre and come back as professionals.

Tickets are selling well, and two extra school shows have been added this year due to demand, she added.

The show opens on Saturday 7 December and combines a seven-strong professional cast of actors with 32 local children playing cats, dogs and rats.

Don’t panic! The cast get in the mood for their “escape room action, trapped in Sheringham town clock

Dick whittington and his Cat runs from 7 December to 1 January. for tickets and information call 01263 822347, or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

As the cast met to begin rehearsals and see their costumes for the first time, director Nick Earnshaw, who is also playing the dame, Sarah the Cook, said “It is always daunting to start – with all the dance routines, songs, ‘slop scenes’ and fights to learn. But it is great having a core of experienced actors who know the venue and audience, and are like ‘mini directors’ on stage to help the other cast.

Rik Warren (Jonny the Dog) is the longest-serving, doing his sixth Sheringham panto, and Kyle Fraser (Dick Whittington) his fifth, but first in a title role.

They are joined by North Walsham’s Harry Williams (the Cat) and Lucy Connor (Fairy Bow Bells), who have both graduated from being chorus children to professional senior roles.

Newcomers are Danniella Schindler as Alice Fitzwarren, who has just graduated from drama school and Kit Henson (Queen Rat) who has sung in a steam punk band at Alton Towers.

A Foggy Drive

We’d been to see some relatives, Who lived a fair way off. We left for home as darkness fell, While our family waved us off. Banks of fog formed as we left, Floating and swirling around. We didn’t know the road very well, But hoped we’d get home safe and sound. Ahead, we saw a car’s rear lights, There was nothing else we could do. We followed that car as close as we could We just stuck to those lights like glue! The lights turned left, then right, then stopped. A voice said “I’ve arrived! A man’s face appeared at our window. We’d followed him into his drive! Frances Wraight

Christmas at Mannington

There are lots of places to see Mr Claus himself during the festive period but this year Mannington Estate is hosting the Christmas Fairy with her Elf helper.

They will be hiding in a special corner of the hall which is not normally open to visitors. The hall will be traditionally decorated, the gardens will be lit up and there will be Christmas activities, music and festive fayre.

The event runs on 14 & 15 December from 11am – 7pm with visits to the Fairy between 2pm - 4pm. Entry is £5 or £8 on the day for adults, under 16s are free but a visit to the Christmas Fairy is £5.

Next year Mannington are hoping to encourage children’s interest in gardening by running various competitions and activities along with their Nature Club, The Mannington Minnows which has been running for over 35 years. All the news for Spring 2020 activities will be on their website.

Worstead Festival Grants Money to Educate Build and Save Worstead Festival trustees have distributed £10k to benefit seven groups.

Let us help yyou… ou…

The children at the Worstead CoE Primary School will now have shelter so that play can flow inside and out, even in bad weather. Head Teacher, Nick Read said “That’s brilliant news. This will make a huge difference to the children here at Worstead School.”

Worstead CoE Primary School It’s higher tech for the younger kids at the Worstead Pre School. Three laptops will be paid for so that observations can be recorded. It’s a curriculum requirement.

The box pews at St Mary’s Church, Worstead, can now be lowered to improve sight-lines. The vicar, Paul Cubitt, says the work should be finished by the end of May. Plans will also be drawn up for kitchen and toilet facilities.

The Cromer and District Food Bank will have banners made. Project Manager, Tim Morton said “We rely on grants to enable us to meet operational costs, but it is also vital to raise our profile and these banners will help.”

Training for the trainers can now be paid for by the Sea Palling Independent Lifeboat. Three courses are required by the Royal Yacht Association. Once the volunteer passes these tests they can give training to up to 30 others.

North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust will use its grant to refurbish the Ebridge lower lock gates. Chair of the Festival Trustees, Jane Bond said the grant is “in appreciation for the conservation they carry out and for allowing the public to use the canal.”

It’s a hearts and minds exercise for the seventh grant. A defibrillator for Worstead Parish Council.

North Walsham care home residents enjoy a shopping spree - at home!

Residents at The Manor House care home in North Walsham have enjoyed some much needed retail therapy after making a wish come true for one of the ladies.

Resident Annie made a wish upon the home’s ‘wishing washing line’, to shop for her own clothes, rather than having to rely on family members. The wishing washing line is an innovative project at the home to help arrange special events, experiences or activities for residents, so the team got to work on making Annie’s wish a reality.

On 15 November, staff arranged for local company ‘Birdie’s Boutique’ to bring a range of clothes into the home for residents to look through, try on and buy. Annie and her friends spent lots of time enjoying the opportunity, and for some it was the chance for a whole new wardrobe.

Home Manager Paula Pawsey said “Our wishing washing line is all about making dreams come true for our residents and Annie with one of her that’s exactly what happened here. We try purchases to keep our residents as independent as photo Healthcare Homes possible, and helping them to carry out simple activities such as clothes shopping, which they have always enjoyed before living here, makes such a difference to them.

“It was also special for us to be able to share Annie’s wish with the whole home, so a great many of our residents enjoyed the shopping and replenishing their wardrobes. We’ll be sure to invite Birdie’s Boutique back to The Manor House soon.” www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

North Walsham’s historic High Street to become Heritage Action Zone

Scheme to regenerate town

North Walsham is about to embark on an exciting scheme to renew its historic town centre. The nearly £2 million programme of work is designed to secure lasting improvements for the town’s historic core and the communities who use it.

heritage buildings and support for local businesses.

Funding of up to £975,000 has been secured from the Historic England Programme with North Norfolk District Council committed to matching this sum through a decision taken at Full Council on 20th November. The four-year scheme will begin in April 2020 with a range of projects to restore and enhance the town’s historic character, making it a more attractive, engaging and vibrant place for residents and visitors.

Over the next few weeks, North Norfolk District Council will be working closely with the Town Council and Regenerate North Walsham (RNW CIC) to develop a wide range of proposals that will include projects such as grants for the repair and restoration of key

It will also build on the improvements to public spaces already started as part of North Norfolk District Council’s Market Town Initiative.

This work is already transforming St Nicholas Court into an open space for local events and activities and this new funding will carry these improvements through the town’s Market Place and lokes.

Alongside these physical works there will also be a number of community-led programmes to bring the town’s rich history to life. A consortium of cultural groups and community organisations, such as the North Walsham Heritage Group and Paston College, will also help bring the town to life.

Regenerate North Walsham CIC director Bob Wright said “This grant and NNDC’s match funding, will enable North Walsham to enhance our historical town centre

and promote its heritage, making it a more attractive and interesting place to live, work and visit. North Walsham is delighted that Historic England chose us for this funding as one of just 69 towns selected across the UK”

An NNDC spokesperson said “North Walsham is a wonderful market town, with a rich medieval history, beautiful Georgian architecture and associations with Nelson and the Paston family. Working closely with a range of community groups, this funding will embed these stories into the heart of North Walsham’s town centre creating a social, cultural and economic hub for the area.”

The programme has been designed with North Walsham’s community at its heart and consultation is being carried out throughout the process. Local people are encouraged to get involved and add their voice to help shape the future of the town centre, either by visiting North Walsham Market on a Thursday, completing the online survey, visiting the community shop or Café Kitale in St Nicholas Court.

Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity

12 December General Election Information Several new polling stations to be used by the Council

The UK shall be voting in a General Election on Thursday, 12 December 2019 with Polling Stations being open between 7am and 10pm across our district.

Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. Whilst non-surgical options such as injectables, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results we can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.

North Norfolk District Council has had to implement several changes to Polling Stations due to usual buildings being unavailable at such short notice. We very much appreciate the work that has gone into making our Polling Stations available for this election including the movement or cancellation of pre-existing bookings which had been in place.

the polling station changes for this election are as follows: • blakeney change from Blakeney Village Hall to Blakeney Scout Hut, Langham Road, Blakeney, NR25 7PG. • holt change from Holt Community Centre to Holt Parish Church Hall, Church Street, Holt, NR25 6BB. • tunstead change from Tunstead Primary School to Horse & Groom Public House, Granary Way, Market Street, Tunstead, NR12 8AH.

Many patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved. With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient.

furthermore, there have been two further changes in polling arrangements:• Following a request from Matlaske Parish Council we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Matlaske from Little Barningham Village Hall to Baconsthorpe Village Hall, School Lane, Baconsthorpe, NR25 6LJ. • Due to the unavailability of Sustead Village Hall we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Sustead which also includes electors from Bessingham and Metton so that they will now vote at a Portacabin sited at Hanworth Village Hall, The Common, Hanworth, NR11 7HP.

what types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic?

Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options such as

• one stitch facelift - It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. • laser face-lift - this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. • mini face and neck lift - It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. • 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift.

Residents who wish to vote and are not already on the Electoral Register will have to register by 11.59pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019. If you are not registered you will not be able to vote at this Election.

If you wish to apply for an Absent Vote at this election the deadline for the receipt of postal vote applications are: 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019 with the deadline for Proxy Vote applications being; 5pm on Wednesday, 4 December 2019. Postal Vote packs will be dispatched on Friday, 22 November to those who have permanent postal voting arrangements and those who have applied for a postal vote before 6 November. A second dispatch will be made on Tuesday, 3 December to those who apply for a postal vote between Wednesday, 6 November and 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November.

Finally an emergency proxy application can be made up to 5pm on 12 December, Polling Day, on the grounds of being unavailable to attend your polling station due to a medical emergency or employment reasons.

No matter who you vote for ... VOTE There are 4 candidates for the Parliamentary constituency of North Norfolk. December 12th at a Polling Station near you.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the advantages of a natural look, quick recovery, minimal complication risk, minimal scars, no hair loss, less cost and less risk of infection.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are happy to advise all our supporters and friends that we raised £1,512 at the Christmas Sale in St Benets Hall on 9th November. Many thanks to all those who came to support. A special thank you to our friends Andrea, Bev, Kim, Bren and Jenny who provided items to sell or raffle to raise money and also to everyone who came to help on the stalls.

The cats with Irene are now in residence in their pens and loving the extra space they now have. Phoebe, one of the cats, also appreciates the lovely activity centre donated to the branch when one of our supporters moved.

Although Bassanio still has a problem he is having a rest from treatment at present to allow him a break from frequent visits to the vets, as this can sometimes prove stressful. We will keep you informed of his progress next time.

The pad for the pens, which are being moved from Briston, has now been put down and the tiles laid. We are now waiting to hear when the gentleman, who will be transferring them to their new site, will be available to do this. Our new lady cannot wait to get the pens in place so that she can have her first cats in care. She will be ably assisted by her daughter who is very interested in animal welfare. We hope to have more news on this next time.

Over the past few years we have, on several occasions, taken kittens from an area where they have been allowed to breed without due thought for their welfare. Having taken in 3 litters this year, some of which had cat flu, and paid for over 20 cats to be neutered, people in the local community decided the situation had gone on too long and contacted the RSPCA. They have now taken over neutering the remaining cats and taken in some of the kittens, also with cat flu. Other kittens, found

in a different area of the village have been taken in by another local charity, and, again, most have had cat flu. Although there are still some to be caught here, the situation is now looking much better for the cats. Some of them, however, have migrated to Pearl, another one of our timid older kittens a neighbouring village but, here again, we have been paying for them to be neutered and returned to the site, where people are happy to continue to feed them and have shelter available. Three are due to go to the vets this week so we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to the ladies who have been involved in trapping them and getting them to the vets. We are always happy to help with feral colonies as it does help contain their size, plus interbreeding and health problems that can occur...

The Gallant Gardener

Hello my name is Chris and I am called the Gallant Gardener, ever since I have been able to hold a spade I have been gardening, growing my own, or creating gardens and opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy gardening as a hobby or indeed to go on to create their own gardening businesses.

I can hear my father now telling me to cut a spit and throw it up and make sure you turn it over boy! Our land was heavy, wet and clay and it took some effort. I have always had the opportunity to garden, whether it was at primary or secondary school. During our travels across Norfolk, we have always had a productive garden, able to collect fresh vegetables and grow plants.

In my later years I taught horticulture and environmental science, in various locations in North Norfolk and beyond. Gardening must have been in the family, as one of my uncle’s was head gardener at Melton Constable Hall back in the 1960s for Lord and Lady Hastings.

I can remember going over to the glasshouses and seeing the lemons and other fruit being grown.

This brings me to the Victorians, who were masters at cultivating fruit and vegetables for the whole year. At this time of the year, I bring into my greenhouse or indeed conservatory several well established strawberry plants. I put them in 12” (30cm) pots in a multipurpose compost and nurture them through the winter. When they start to flower in early spring, I give them a regular feed of potassium or potash, this will increase the fruit yield. This will enable me to be eating strawberries a month earlier than those outside.

I was listening to somebody the other day who said that they disliked the term putting the garden to bed! In fact, I have always asked the question when does the gardening year start? The answer is it never does… it’s a continuous cycle.

North Walsham and Bradfield Flower Club – Christmas Wreaths

We are currently up to our eyes in holly, ivy, evergreens, fir cones and ribbon, busily keeping up with demand for our lovely fresh Christmas decorations.

You can buy from Maggy’s stall on the Norwich Road until Christmas Eve or you can also place an order with Maggy or with me direct if you want something in particular - my number is below. Happy to deliver for free.

It is not too late to put a couple of rows of broad beans in the garden, I prefer my tried and tested variety of Aquadulce Claudia. This is a heavy yielder and

will take a lot of bad weather. Sown now, the seeds will germinate and sit just above ground level. If you are subject to lots of frosts put them in pots and keep them in a cold frame or cold greenhouse to weather the winter. You might lose one or two plants to mice or bad weather; however, you will be picking broad beans earlier than most.

Don’t forget your garlic as well you can continue to plant this in the soil providing it is not too wet, a couple of centimetres below the surface, they do need a good hard winter to produce the quality of bulbs...

Tha’s all for now…

Christmas Day Lunch

On Christmas Day, a group of volunteers will be providing a Christmas lunch for people living within the boundaries of North Walsham, who are on their own or who are a couple where one of the partners is a carer for the other.

The lunch is held at the Community Centre on behalf of Churches Together. The use of the Community Centre is very kindly donated by its Management. Transport can usually be arranged if needed. Because of donations, of money or in kind, from charities, organisations and individuals, the meal is free. A retiring collection for a local homelessness based charity is available for anyone wishing to make a contribution. The day for guests starts from about 12.30pm with a welcome drink, and

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

ends between 3.30pm and 4pm, after the Queen's Speech and a final cup of

tea and piece of cake.

We have a data-base for those who have been before, and they will already have been contacted or will be very soon, so don't need to do anything else, though if for some reason you have been missed please do make contact. But there will be others who have recently moved into the town or whose circumstances have changed in the last year - we would love to welcome you.

Equally, you may have company yourself but know someone else who could be alone and would like to join us - please let us know. You can contact us either by email to felicitynnorfolk@yahoo.co.uk or phone John on 01692 405119 or Mollie on 01692 402089.

North Walsham Times Issue 580 7th December 2019

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year ‌ or is it?

there is an air of huge excitement as we gather together on this most special day of the Christmas season.

The goodwill, camaraderie, joy and sense of fun abound in such large quantities that it feels like you can reach out and grab a handful to share around.

It’s Christmas Bag Pack Day at the Foodbank! If you have been following us you already know that our Foodbank Donors are quietly committed throughout the year to helping others in North Norfolk who, for reasons often beyond their control, need some short-term support to feed their families. It goes without saying that we could not do the work that we do to provide emergency food without their generous donations.

But wow! At this time of year, year after year, our Foodbank Donors amaze us by surpassing all expectations with their generosity. Through them we can put together special Christmas bags containing lovely Christmas food treats

for our clients and which we all associate with our annual Christmas celebrations.

in the corner of the room ready for distribution to Foodbank clients during December.

Why would they do this? Especially at a time of high expense for most people? Because these donors want to help our clients enjoy the Christmas that they would want for their families if they weren’t facing financial crises. And in our view, that is the essence of true Christmas spirit.

So, back to the Bag Pack. Picture the scene on a Saturday in early December, a large group of our fabulous volunteers gather at our Cromer warehouse. Excitement and chatter increases as the Christmas treats are set out on long tables ready for packing and people get ready, keen to start this most rewarding of jobs in the Foodbank calendar.

At the signal, packing begins. Each volunteer takes something from each group of Christmas treats so that every bag contains a selection of everything and nothing is missed out. Bags full to the brim with chocolate, sweets, Christmas cake and pudding, tinned meats, chutneys, nibbles and Christmas crackers begin to build

As the pile of bags grows and the work nears completion so too does the excitement of the volunteers. How many Christmas Bags have we packed this year? At our 2018 Christmas Bag Pack we filled 250 bags full of lovely Christmas food which was amazing. This year, we’re hoping to exceed that total so that during December we can include even more bags of Christmas goodies with our clients’ short term, emergency food supplies through each of our 7 centres in Aylsham (2), Cromer, Holt, North Walsham, Sheringham and Stalham.

This is teamwork at its very best supported by true acts of kindness from all our Foodbank donors and volunteers.

Thank you and Merry Christmas from all of us to all of you.

Free car parking boost for Christmas shoppers offered by North Norfolk District Council - Town councils choose their two key dates Every town in North Norfolk has chosen two days of free parking over the festive period.

North Norfolk District Council has decided once again to waive the parking charges prior to Christmas, as in previous years. This year the free parking period will run on various dates between November 30 and December 22.

holt – December 15 and 22 sheringham – December 7 and 14

A council spokesman: “We are delighted to offer this service once again. It will provide economic benefit to high streets across North Norfolk and should encourage residents to shop locally.

The decision supports North Norfolk's businesses and traders by encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their local towns. At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to requests from businesses.

A Trifle Naughty!

With Christmas looming large on the horizon, it’s good to have a few nifty recipes up your sleeve to ring the changes and bring a little va va voom to the table.

This is one ridiculously easy and impressive trifle, full of punchy and exotic flavours, and with the addition of Malibu, most definitely one for the adults only!

It’s not the cheapest pud on the planet, but then it’s lovely to conjure up something a little special for high days and holidays, and this one won’t have you slaving for hours in the kitchen. You could almost kid yourself that it’s a healthy trifle, as there’s so much fresh fruit in it, and unlike traditional trifles, it’s not padded out with sugary jelly and custard.

The tin of Mango puree can be bought for very reasonable price at Tesco, and it’s a huge tin, so you can use the leftovers to swirl into yoghurt, ice cream, porridge, rice

WANTED

pudding and more. We will most assuredly be breaking this out on Boxing Day!

tropical trifle 1 medium fresh pineapple, cored, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 large ripe mango, peeled, destoned and cut into small chunks 6 – 8 trifle sponge fingers Glass of Malibu Tin of Laila Mango Puree 500 ml double cream 2 meringues, crumbled Handful of fresh pistachio nuts

Break the sponge fingers in half and place in the bottom of a deep glass trifle dish, then pour over the Malibu, ensuring that they all get a good soaking. Allow to soak in.

Place the nuts in a moderate oven on a tray for about 4-5 mins until toasted, and cool, bashing them up a little.

Mix the fresh mango and pineapple together, and place on top of the sponge layer,

drizzling a little more Malibu on.

Drizzle a couple of tablespoons of mango puree over the fruit.

Whip the cream so that it is quite stiff, and then gently fold in about 3 tablespoons of mango puree and mix well.

Spoon cream over the fruit, and level off with the back of a large spoon.

Refrigerate until serving. Just before you serve, sprinkle the crumbled meringue over the trifle, and scatter over the cooled nuts.

Thanks

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Barrington Farm is a unique independent day services centre for adults with learning difficulties, based at Walcott, which has come to the aid of Happisburgh RNLI volunteers by raising £440.05 for the station to save lives at sea.

Amanda Colman has been running a drama group at Barrington Farm for about two years. Amanda said ‘we became interested in the history of the coastal area around Walcott and the idea of making a show about smugglers, lifeboat crews and the beauty and joy of our Norfolk Coast was created. The cast were particularly interested in learning about lifeboat crews and their daring rescues.

We believe that theatre should be free and accessible to all and decided that we would “pass the hat” around at the end of the show and donate the proceeds to

the RNLI. The show was a success and we, the cast and staff of Barrington Farm were amazed at the incredible response we received.

Creating our recent show Beside the Sea has given the cast a voice; we were busy in the art barn leading up to the production making the set and costumes plus rehearsing two days per week. The performers were inspired to be raising money for the RNLI and are quite

slump (which is very common!) before deciding to cobble together another show in time for Christmas which we are presently working on - it’s called A Partridge on a Settee and will be on 18 December’.

Volunteers from Happisburgh went along to meet the cast and hear their stories, the cast then presented a cheque to the RNLI.

rightly very, very proud of their achievement. We naturally suffered from an after show

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

The RNLI is facing a Perfect Storm: our volunteers are busier than ever; providing a world class rescue service but people are still drowning, however our income is down so we need more money to save more lives – investing in the future of lifesaving is vital. Fundraising like this is essential in order to enable us to carry on with this work.

Visit rnli.org/theperfectstorm to donate.

Council tree planting initiative Council scheme to plant 110,000 Trees in 4 Years

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is pleased to announce its support for National Tree Week as part of its ambition to plant 110,000 trees – one for every person in North Norfolk – over the next four years. The announcement is part of NNDC’s appeal to get members of the public and community groups involved with the tree planting initiative.

NNDC launched the scheme at its annual Greenbuild environmental sustainability event in September and the Council has already made significant progress towards achieving this ambitious goal. 10,000 trees will be planted in the Council’s award winning Holt Country Park and woodland areas and almost 1,000 saplings were given away by the Woodland Trust at Greenbuild for residents to plant. The Council is partnering with the Woodland Trust as its main supplier of trees for the scheme and is looking to involve members of the public and community groups with the planting of the trees.

Nick Sandford, Regional external affairs officer at the Woodland Trust said: “The Woodland Trust is delighted to work with North Norfolk Council as it responds to the climate and nature emergency we all face. Its hugely important local authorities lead the way, and North Norfolk’s trailblazing target of planting a tree for every local resident over the next four years is something councils across England should look to follow. Trees are amazing for their ability not just to remove and lock up carbon from the atmosphere, but in offering a home for wildlife and a green place we can all go to and enjoy. We need more of them and what North Norfolk Council is doing is a great start.” Last Month saw the first two trees planted at the Council’s office in Cromer to symbolically mark the commencement of the scheme by Leader of the Council Sarah Bütikofer, Chair of the Council Cllr. Clive Stockton and Senior Countryside Supervisor Anne-Marie Gedge (in pic above).

Cllr. Nigel Lloyd, Environment Portfolio Holder at NNDC said, ‘NNDC declared a climate emergency in April and planting trees to help take carbon out of the atmosphere is a key initiative in our journey to becoming a carbon neutral council by 2030. We hope to engage with communities across the district to help us achieve our goal of planting a tree for every resident over the next four years and, at the same time, we are proud to support National Tree Week in partnership with the Woodland Trust.’

‘We are asking people to come forward with ideas and suggestions which can contribute to the Council’s aim of planting 110,000 trees. We know that a number of schools, parish councils and other community groups are active in this area and we would like to work with them to help identify sites for the tree-planting and then to nurture the trees they have planted.

As part of their support for National Tree week, NNDC will be hosting a seed planting event named “Norfolk Trees from Norfolk Seed” in Holt Country Park on Saturday 30 November between 10am-12pm. The NNDC Countryside Rangers are keen to see as many people, of all ages, joining them in the park to collect seeds and receive advice and information on how to plant and care for them. Other events will follow over the tree planting season. Further information on these, and the wider tree planting initiative, can be found via the NNDC website (www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/trees).

NNDC was the first local authority in Norfolk to declare a climate emergency, and the tree-planting scheme is one of the Council’s many other environmental initiatives, which also includes the installation of Electric Vehicle Chargepoints on the Council’s car parks this winter and solar panels on the roof at the Council’s Cromer offices.

Country’s biggest New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates 21 years All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1 January 2020 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 21st anniversary.

The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity.

The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2021 display.

The bucket collection at the 2019 display raised over a fantastic £10,000. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2019 display.

Former Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support. It has gone on to attract larger and larger crowds, and consequently an increase in donations which helps pay for the following year's display and grants to local charities."

Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £5 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks. Additional car parking will be publicised in advance of the event.

Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling over £60,000 to local charities and good causes. Organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day to see more than 3,000 firework shots light up the skies over the North Sea.

Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said “As always, the advice is please arrive early and support the local businesses in town who do support the Fireworks committee. There are several exciting new sequences within the main display which will be new to Cromer this year and we are very excited to show these to everyone. As last year, there will be a torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display. The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

Will Evans, Project Manager at Titanium Fireworks, said: “Titanium Fireworks are delighted to be firing again off Cromer pier on New Year’s Day 2020. This show is now a firm highlight in our calendar and the crowds it draws, and money it raises for the community, make it something special for us to play our part in. A local youngster will be leading the countdown as a thank you for the winning drawing she sent to the display organisers after the 2019 event and we will then start the main show and fill the skies above Cromer with an array of effects to wow the crowds and start the year with a bang. As always we would like to encourage those who can, to donate to the collectors around the town so that this event can continue to run and raise as much money as it can for the worthy causes in the area.”

Illuminated merchandise available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church from 2pm – 4.30pm. The torchlit procession will set off from Cromer Museum at 4.30 pm, for those who have purchased official torches, to a viewing position on slopes in front of the Hotel de Paris.

New Year’s Day Fireworks 2019 credit R.Birnie (Winner 2019 photography competition sponsored by Hughes)

“Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display” said Pat West.

Organisers are still looking for volunteers to bolster their official bucket collectors team. Please contact Cromer town council for more information or register at Cromer museum on New Year’s Day from 2pm. Prior to the fireworks there will be a fun run along Cromer Promenade at 3pm organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners.

There will be no parking available on Cromer Promenade on New Year’s Day. Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (approx 7pm) although Tides Restaurant will be open until 4pm.

Please see Cromer Town Council website (www.cromer-tc.gov.uk), the event’s Facebook page (New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer) or Twitter feed (@NYDFireworks and @north_lodge) for updates. firework photography Competition This year there will be one firework photography competition. Sponsored by Titanium Fireworks, the winner will have the chance to visit one of the their 2020 display for a behind the scenes tour. Full competition rules will be published soon, please visit www.cromer-tc.gov.uk

The one-mile fun run is the perfect opportunity to work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog or a five minute dash if you’re up to it!

Starting from the pier forecourt, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm for a fee of £1.

Wishing you and your family health, happiness, peace and prosperity this festive season.

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis Another busy night at the sports centre

All three North Walsham teams in the Premier Division had home matches on the same night at the Sports Centre as Alpha's Andy Beane, Robin Thaxter and Richard Westgate hosted Mundesley A's Simon Halliday, Peter Betts and Paul Price with the latter retiring injured. Alpha won the match 6-4. For the visitors Halliday took a brace as his top spin game defeated Westgate in three and he also beat Beane in five, Betts won a close five-setter against Westgate and the duo combined for a doubles win in five against Thaxter and Westgate. On the opposite side of the gym Cobra's Mark Blackburn and Robert and Marceli Gabriel hosted Poacher's David Foster and Andy and Laura Marsh. The game of the season so far saw Laura Marsh save match-point to beat Robert Gabriel 11-6, 8-11, 15-13, 6-11, 12-10. Foster took a brace but was beaten in four by Robert Gabriel. Each of the home team took a brace as Cobras took the match 6-4 with Marceli Gabriel beating both Andy and Laura Marsh in four and Blackburn winning a close battle with Laura Marsh 8-11, 15-13, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8. The doubles saw Foster and Laura Marsh beat the Gabriel's in five. On the middle table, Beta's John Vaughan, Stuart Hook and Ben Lester hosted Backhander's Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner with Wilson recovering from two down to win the opener against Vaughan. The Backhander

took a maximum but was taken the distance by Hook whose fierce-some forehands saw him to a brace with two wins in four including a terrific 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9 victory against Warner with the Beta winning one point with an incredible tennis-type smash! Lester beat De Neve in straight but the Backhander trio won the remaining battles in a mix of three and four sets to take the match 7-3. North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club

North Norfolk Vikings were in action over the weekend of 16th /17th November at the November meet held at the UEA Sports Park in Norwich. The Vikings had a small team of 3 boys and 7 girls. Over the weekend we had 69 individual events and the team came away with 46 personal best times, 1 gold, 10 sliver and 6 bronze medals. I was so very pleased to see what all the hard work we have been doing is now starting to pay off.

North Norfolk Vikings’ next competition is in December at the Winter Wipeout meet which this will be another opportunity to achieve Norfolk County qualifying times and a chance to improve in the events we already have a chance, where some swimmers can get closer to qualifying for regional times. Let’s keep up the hard work and improve even more than we have done already.

Well done to all those for taking part at the November meet. Special thanks to the team managers, parents and all swimmers. Many thanks. Sam Watts, Lead coach.
