North Walsham Play

George’s Christmas Gift!

North Walsham Play received a major boost to its fundraising efforts following a pre-Christmas gift from George Pegg.

Continued from front cover... Ed Margarson, Sleigh Appeal organiser for the past several years, once again wished to thank all the residents and members of North Walsham who gave so generously.

A cheque was handed over to Matthew Smith MBE, totalling £608.10, which was raised at the Christmas Makers Market organized by George and his family.

He added “The Round Table and I continue to be overwhelmed at the level of support given to our annual Sleigh Appeal. It was great to see so many children enjoy seeing Santa and his sleigh visit many roads across the town during December”.

Presenting the cheque, George was very pleased with the figure raised from the event which took place on Saturday 7 December at North Walsham Community Centre. He added “I really do hope the money raised will help with the funds needed for the Skate Park”.

Once again, a live tracker was hooked up to the Sleigh allowing children and their families to know when Santa was close!

George, who has autism, has always wanted to run his own catering business, so the maker markets allow George to organise, manage and run his hugely successful pop-up Café. Originally the idea of a close family friend, Helen Richardson, George’s Cafes are very well known within and around North Walsham for providing delicious homemade cakes, bakes and treats.

Matthew Smith, Trustee of North Walsham Play wished to thank North Walsham Round Table for deciding to support them again in 2019.

He added “we have really enjoyed helping Santa and his elves once again as they visit many parts of North Walsham. We will put the donation to very good use with regards to reaching our £185,000 fundraising target for a new Skate Park”

Find out more information about North Walsham Round Table here: https://northwalsham.roundtable.co.uk/ or visit their facebook page via www.facebook.com/nwrt331

Receiving the cheque, Matthew Smith wished to thank all who helped organise the event along with all those that came and gave their support. He added “this is a great boost to our fundraising efforts to help bring about a new state of the art skate park within the town”

Coffee Morning for Macmillan

Make sure you follow George on Facebook via @cafecuppacraft to keep up to date on all the events planned for 2020 and beyond.

Prostate Cancer Research Collection

They would like to thank everyone who went along and donated and helped out in any way and wish everyone all the best for the new year.

Steve and Sue would like to thank North Walsham shoppers for £135.58 and £211.71 raised in street collections on 28 November and 5 December. All monies to go to Prostate Cancer Research Centre (registered charity no. 1156027).

Missing a Parent by Maria Endall. family solicitor,

When a child loses a parent, through death, divorce or separation, the impact is often significant and long-lasting.

This is bad enough for a child whose loss is owing to the death of a parent, but what if one parent is preventing contact with the other post-separation? No matter how well intended a parent might consider this sort of intervention to be, it has been well researched that the consequences of such actions can have the opposite effect, and cause the child unnecessary suffering and long-term damage.

Not involving yourself in your child’s life, or being prevented from seeing your child by the other parent, can cause feelings of rejection and grief for your child. To make matters worse, the child may feel unable to grieve properly if they have been drawn into conflict.

Where one parent prevents the other from having a normal, positive relationship with

a child, it is known in family law proceedings as Hayes + Storr ‘parental alienation’ or ‘intractable hostility’ and is considered extremely damaging to the child and is increasingly being recognised as a form of child abuse.

In certain cases where parental alienation is established, the courts will increasingly consider transferring residency of the child to the alienated parent in order to reunify the child with that important missing link in their life, and address the emotional trauma they have suffered up to that point. The courts aim is to ensure that both children and adults are kept safe, and to enable children to maintain relationships with both parents where it is safe and in the child’s best interests to do so.

No matter how parents may feel about one another after a separation, the importance of keeping the child’s well-being as the main focus, cannot be understated. It should be remembered that it is the child’s right to have

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind

a positive relationship with both his or her parents, and it is both parents’ responsibility to ensure this happens.

was held to raise funds for the Club and together with the bingo held in the evening, the total raised was ÂŁ711 - many thanks to all the helpers that so willingly gave up their time.

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind met as usual at the Community Centre for their traditional Christmas lunch last month.

Although it was a cold day outside it was warm and cosy inside with Christmas crackers and chocolates on the tables. No Father Christmas but lovely carol singing from the Worstead choir more than compensated.

We would also like to give a really special thank you to Mrs Cynthia Gale who always makes sure that these two events go off with a bang. We wish all our members, friends and supporters of the Club a very happy and prosperous New Year.

We ended the afternoon with the raffle - so many prizes all donated by local businesses and members of the Club.

The Club will meet again on the first Thursday in February at the Community Centre at 2pm.

New Year’s Day Fireworks Cromer Pier was once again the backdrop for the town’s annual New Year’s Day Firework Display.

The display by Titanium Fireworks rounded off an afternoon of family entertainment including a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners and a torchlight procession. Many shops and cafes opened for the day to welcome visitors.

At 5pm crowds waited in anticipation for the fireworks to begin – and once again they didn’t disappoint!

A short bible message was also shared by Major Susan Jones.

'Everyone went away knowing just a little bit more about what Christmas is really about' said Major Richard Durrant of the North Walsham Corps.

A highlight was when the curtains were drawn back during the singing of 'Away in a Manger' to reveal a nativity. All those taking part then gathered round with tea lights.

COAST Arts, an arts charity based in the Cromer and Sheringham area of North Norfolk, is holding an open meeting about its future on 31 January at The Belfry Centre for Music and Arts in Overstrand. The meeting will take place from 10.30am – 12pm. Amanda Hensby, Secretary of COAST Arts, says “We have some ideas that we’d like to share, and we want to hear your ideas on how we can best support and contribute to a local vibrant arts scene. Everyone is welcome and if you have an interest in any form of visual or performing art, or you have links within the community with any arts group or school, please come along.”

Every October since 2010 COAST Arts has organised an arts festival in and around Cromer and Sheringham as well as supporting and coordinating other arts events throughout the year. Malcolm Birtwell, a trustee of the charity, says: “Over the

years we’ve braved the storms and had all hands to the pumps. We’ve cast our nets wide, been fishers of all arts and always made it safely back to port, if a little battered at times.

After 10 years we want to do more, so the old ship is having a refit. We’re hoping to pick up some new crew in the different unexplored ports we intend to visit.”

The trustees of COAST Arts are holding this open meeting to gather more ideas for activities and events that can be staged throughout the year as well as during the autumn festival, to increase working in partnership with other groups to enable the charity to broaden its scope, and to recruit more individuals to contribute to COAST Arts’ work.

Amanda continues “Our goal is to deliver a varied programme of art, photography,

Christmas Day Lunch

Every Christmas Day for the past 24 years Churches Together in North Walsham, have invited anyone who lives on their own, to a lunch in the Community Centre. We had a lovely day - guests were welcomed with a drink, then a traditional turkey lunch. This was followed by a free raffle, then tea and cake whilst watching the Queen’s speech. On leaving, guests were given a box of chocolate biscuits and a North Walsham calendar and offered a lift home if they wished.

Let us help yyou‌ ou‌

Christmas can be a very lonely and depressing time for people living on their own, this lunch provides an opportunity for people to have a ‘mardle’ and enjoy a very special day.

So a big thank you to all the helpers, clubs and businesses who made this day possible. Rev Valerie Watts (on behalf of Churches Together)

Pigmentation treatments from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

A uniform skin tone and texture is desired by many irrespective of their colour and considered a sign of skin health.

Pigmentation can have a number of causes such as excessive sun exposure, genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma. Melasma is a commonly acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation. Treatment of melasma has been traditionally centered on the use of daily sunscreen and topical bleaching creams or chemical peels.

A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.

We can evaluate the location and depth of pigmentation in the skin and this guides what treatments we may recommend. This may include sun protection, skin creams such as lightening creams, vitamin creams and gentle skin peels. Recently a variety of lasers have been used. We have had great results with our lasers but in general 3-5 sessions of treatments are required. These laser treatments are gentle and do not require social downtime. We also use fractional lasers in which case skin may be pink for a few days.

S SOLD OLD

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is well equipped with multiple lasers and non-laser technology so we can device a customized treatment programme based on your unique characteristics. There are also many innovative gentle treatments such as mesotherapy on offer so why not come and see us and start your journey towards a flawless skin. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We ended the year with good news regarding Dave the little cat who had been missing since April and now have more good news for another lovely cat called Boris.

When walking their dog near woodland, a young couple found they were being followed by a cat who had a very sore eye and was looking quite thin. They obtained a cat basket and were checking with neighbours to see if they knew the cat or had seen it in the area recently.

One of their ports of call was Julie’s workplace, and at this point Julie became involved. As she had no kittens in care at present, she contacted us to see how we could help. It was agreed that she should take the cat home, check for a microchip and if there was one, to ring me so that I could check for an owner.

Once again, we found that the cat was chipped and was registered to a home in Suffolk. I rang the contact details and learnt that the cat had been staying with relations close by when it went missing in October. Although not able to come straight away, the owners were only too happy to come and collect Boris and take him home to Suffolk. A picture of this very lucky cat was posted on our Facebook page by his owner and he has now been to the vets to be checked and to have his eye treated. Without the intervention of the couple concerned, who recognised that Boris was a genuine stray, he would still be out there so we thank them on Boris’s behalf.

The pens from Briston are now up and already have cats in residence with Caroline and Holly. We thank Caroline’s husband Ray for laying the base, tiling it and connecting it to the electricity supply. At present Octopussy is resident in one of the pens but this will not be for long as he will shortly be moving from the pen to take up permanent residence in the house. We are so pleased that this very special cat has finally landed on his paws although I do believe the vet has advised he needs to

watch his weight. The young cats in the other pen are two that came into care as very frightened older kittens who we knew would need lots of attention to ensure they adjusted to life with a family. They are now receiving this from both Caroline and Holly and already Izzie and Maddie are enjoying having a fuss and being stroked and Izzie will already let Holly pick her up for a cuddle. These little cats originally came in with their four brothers two of which have already been rehomed. Although it was acceptable when they Boris - safe, warm and well fed first arrived, as they were not fully at Julie's while waiting for his grown, guidelines from the veterinary owner to come and collect him department at Head Office indicated they needed to be separated, as they would need more space and it also ensures they receive individual attention.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Since Crackers’ (who is doing well) arrival, Charlie, Humbug and little George have come into care.

George was found on 30 December at only 250g. He was the last admission of 2019. He had a heavy lungworm burden and is on medication. Due to the lungworm he isn't inclined to eat so, to encourage his appetite, I am syringe feeding him approximately three hourly, which is helping to keep his weight stabilised. In 2019 I attended to 163 hogs here at the hogspital - the rise in numbers hopefully means that more people are becoming Hedgehog Aware and more hedgehogs are being given a second chance for a fulfilling life back in the wild.

Cadets have won flying and shooting badges as well as first aid, musician and leadership badges. Two cadets have obtained BTEC diplomas whilst others are working towards the award, hopefully, early in 2020. Awards for radio and cyber communications were exceptional this year and all the cadets made progress with their cadet classification exams, including senior and master cadet passes, the two highest classifications that can be obtained.

Good Year for Air Cadets

2019 has been a good year for cadets of 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron.

The cadets supported the Armed Forces Day event at the Atrium and took part in the Remembrance Sunday parades in North Walsham and Badersfield.

Cadets won medals and Wing Blues in several sporting events including road marching and attended a number of camps. A weekend Wing Field competition and week-long camps. Adventure training camps in Thetford and Scotland and a uniform camp at RAF Coningsby, where Corporal Lenka Hozzova won the Best Cadet award. Plus, other weekend training courses including an aerospace camp. A good deal of flying was enjoyed with sorties from Cranwell and Wittering.

The year also saw presentations to the cadets by members of SSAFA on the development of military weapons and Sqn Ldr Duke from RAF Lossiemouth on his career in the RAF and new aircraft types.

The squadron has been adopted by the local RAFA branch, and the squadron has achieved a gold standard health and safety award.

Freemasons contribute to Defibrillator

2110 (North Walsham) Sqn at this year’s Remembrance Service

Staff wise there have been new members joining the team as instructors and committee members and their continued hard work has helped make the year to so successful.

If flying, and much more interests you, North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 17 years. They are currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers.

At their December meeting, the 'Lodge of Unanimity No 102' were pleased to present a cheque for ÂŁ1000 to the North Walsham Community Centre.

The money was donated as a result of a request from the management for donations to help buy and install a defibrillator for the Centre, which is now installed outside by the front doors.

Charity Steward W. Bro Ian Walker said "Considering the number of different groups that use the Centre, including our Lodge, we thought it was extremely important to have this piece of equipment located here and installed as quickly as possible". Worstead Pre-School Nativity

Mundesley Library Friends Dates for your New Diary

Last month the children from Worstead Pre-School enjoyed putting on a nativity play, ‘The First Christmas’ for their families and friends.

Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) built a reputation last year with a series of well attended and interesting talks at the library. We now have a programme of events for 2020 with talks by some old friends and some new faces - hopefully something to interest everybody.

Children as young as two years old, sang, acted, danced and portrayed the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of baby Jesus.

The programme is listed below and further details will be available before each event via Mundesley library and council websites, Facebook or posters around the village.

Friday 17 January - Chris brown (Fosters solicitors) gives a light hearted view of his work as a Solicitor Advocate defending cases of murder, manslaughter and serious fraud. He gives examples to show that all is not always as it seems!

wednesday 19 February - millicent Chapandra, a Zimbabwean musician and creative cultural artist, will lead a multicultural African music making workshop featuring drumming, singing, dancing, and movement. Come and learn how various African instruments are made, then have a go at playing them.

Many of the children sang solos and this was all followed by a Christmas Fayre to raise money to update the pre-school's outdoor area.

Friday 24 april - blickling 1930s guestbook - Bunty Gotts returns with a talk highlighting 4 guests to Blickling at that time - three you will have heard of, one you may not!

saturday 13 June - wild touch childrens' event - come to meet and learn about the animals that Wild Touch have saved.

If you would like to visit this 'outstanding' pre-school or add your child's name to our waiting list, please telephone Karla or Paula 01692 535692 (term time) or visit their website

Friday 4 october - Friends of horsey seals - with around 2000 seal pups born each year at this time the Friends will tell of the work that is involved caring for and protecting these mammals and informing the public who flock to see the spectacle each year.

Funds for each event are split between MLF and the speaker's chosen charity. Why not come along to one (or more) talks for an entertaining evening whilst supporting our library.

Captains’ drive to raise funds for cancer charity

Sheringham lost a true gentleman with the passing of Brian Hannah on 29 December.

New captains at Mundesley Golf Club have teed off a year which will raise funds for a cancer charity close to their hearts.

Pat Kerrison and Jenny Smith, both from Stalham, did the traditional ‘drive-in’ to signal the start of their men’s and ladies’ captaincies, joined by senior and junior counterparts John Sewell and Finley Burnett-Kiernan.

The captains’ charity for the coming year will be Pancreatic Cancer Research, after Jenny’s husband Derek, also a member of the Club, died from the disease in April 2017.

The new captains Jenny Smith, Pat Kerrison, John Sewell, and Finley Burnett-Kiernan

Jenny, said “Losing Derek to pancreatic cancer within five weeks of diagnosis was a terrible shock. It feels so right to nominate this charity and help find a test for early diagnosis.”

Pat, 76, who ran a family windows business, has been playing golf since his mid-20s and was also a member at the Great Yarmouth and Caister Club. He took a break from the sport for five years to compete in triathlons all over the world.

Jenny, 66, who followed up a career mainly in sales and marketing by becoming a Thai massage therapist and Reiki Master, joined Mundesley in 2011 with her husband after being instantly ‘hooked’ on a Get Ladies Back to Golf class. She has been helping the resurgent coastal club gain sponsorships.

Both captains play off handicaps of 12, though Pat has been as low as six while at Caister, and Jenny’s goal is to play off eight.

For more information about Mundesley Golf Club, which offers a range of membership packages to suit people’s needs, visit mundesleygolfclub.com or call 01263 720095. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Brian, aged 74, represented Sheringham on North Norfolk District Council for 22 years, and throughout that time was a champion of community safety issues on the Council. He was heavily involved in the successful road safety campaign for the three-way junction on the A148 Cromer to Holt road.

He was forced to step down from councillor duties in late 2019 due to poor health.

Brian was a valued and regular contributor to our magazines.

A Memorial Service is due to be held on Friday 17 January at 1.30pm at St Peters Church, Sheringham.

We extend our deepest condolences to his widow, Bev and all his family.

North Walsham Table Tennis Alpha recover to win derby

The last week before the Christmas break saw a derby in the Premier Division as Alpha's Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Robin Thaxter took on Cobra's Mark Blackburn and Robert and Marceli Gabriel. The first three battles were all straight set affairs as Robert Gabriel won the opener against Beane, Marceli won some stunning rallies to take his second win against Baldock-Yaxley 13-11, 11-9, 11-5 and Thaxter was in control against Blackburn. Robert Gabriel came from a set down to beat BaldockYaxley before Blackburn took his first League win against Beane 14-12, 11-8, 12-10 which saw Cobras lead 4-1 at the half-way stage. Thaxter then defeated Marceli Gabriel in straight before Baldock-Yaxley came from a set down to beat Blackburn. The contest between Thaxter and Robert Gabriel has to go down as one of the most gripping this Press Officer has witnessed in the last seventeen years – it featured every-

thing including a memorising point in the second set of lightning reflexes. Gabriel fought back from two down and saved four matchpoints at 6-10 in the fourth before Thaxter eventually prevailed 13-11, 11-8, 6-11, 10-12, 11-7. Beane edged out Marceli Gabriel 13-11 in the fourth before Baldock-Yaxley and Thaxter won a vital doubles against the Gabriel's 2-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-4 to complete the fight-back as Alpha took the match 6-4. Elsewhere in the top flight, Beta were beaten 10-0 by Poachers. In the First Division, North Walsham Echoes Frank Weston, John Chapman and Irving Watson hosted Crosscourt's Rod Goffin, Keith Beswick and Anne Armitage. For the visitors, Goffin took a maximum and was taken to four by both Chapman and Watson while Beswick took a brace with a 14-12, 11-8, 11-7 defeat of Chapman and a win in four against Weston after dropping the first 11-2. Watson beat the Crosscourter in straight and - with each of the

the Vikings’ outstanding form continued into 2020 winning their first game of the new Year 28-10 at Chingford.

In their last two matches in December they received a ‘walkover’ against bottom placed Ruislip, who chose not to fulfil the fixture, and beat Shelford 41 – 3 at Scottow Park. As at 5 January they were the top of the table on 70 points,18 more than the three teams who are joint second: Southend, Brentwood and Haberdashers.

Promotion though is certainly not being taken for granted. There are some tough fixtures in January and February including Haberdashers and Brentwood, a visit from fifth placed Colchester and a trip to Sudbury who ran the Vikings very close in November. “Teams will strengthen, the threat of relegation will add resolve, pitches will be heavier,” said Head of Rugby Johnny Marsters. He listed some of the factors that have contributed to his side’s outstanding form, “the togetherness of the squad, team before self, high fitness levels, commitment to continuous improvement, simply

hosting trio picking up a win against Armitage – teamed up with Watson for a vital 10-12, 11-3, 13-11, 11-9 doubles win against Beswick and Goffin that saw the match end as a draw. Echoes also won 6-4 at home to Lobsters. LCC Seal's Ian Kidger, Stephen Ratcliffe and Jimmy Kerr hosted North Walsham Delta's Tim Shelley, Gudi Scham and Tony Bispham in the Second Division. Ratcliffe and Kerr both picked up singles in straight against Shelley who in turn edged Kidger 13-11 in the third and joined Bispham for a doubles win in three against Kidger and Ratcliffe. Scham and Bispham both took maximums with a mixture of wins in three and four as Delta won the match 8-2 and they continued their success with a 9-1 win against Mundesley E.
