School’s Successful Mentoring Scheme gets a New Push A call has gone out for business people and employers in the area to support a hugely successful mentoring scheme at North Walsham High School.

With several new mentors signed up last year, the school careers department is pushing forward with plans to get the scheme back to centre stage.

The mentoring was first launched several years ago to help High School students gain confidence and skills they will need once they enter the world of work.

Work-based learning officer Kate Lawn said “The programme is based on the simple basis that young people will succeed if they are supported by those who are already successful. It’s also a fantastic way to raise aspirations of our young people, giving them role models who will inspire them and help them develop their ‘soft’ skills to boost prospects.” Continued on page 4...

North Walsham ‘The Forgotten Town’

School’s Successful Mentoring Scheme gets a New Push

North Walsham has again been forgotten by Conservative run Norfolk County Council in its plans for new school buildings over the next 10 years says North Walsham Liberal Democrat Cllr Eric Seward.

Continued from front cover... Business people are being asked to go along to a business breakfast on Wednesday 12 February 7pm - 8.30am to meet current mentors, share ideas and meet students. They can then attend a speed networking launch on the morning of Tuesday 31 March.

In a question to the Council’s Cabinet member for Children’s Services at the County Council’s meeting on 20 January 20 Cllr Seward asked why the Council’s recent Local Growth and Investment Plan for new schools over the next 10 years ignored North Walsham. This was in spite of North Walsham being identified as a potential housing growth town with up to two thousand new homes in North Norfolk District Council’s draft Local Plan. Such an increase in houses will require a new Primary School.

Kate said “We want all of our students to benefit from mentoring. Research shows that it has huge benefits for students and employers, who have highlighted that employability skills are lacking in young people. Our aim is to build these to enable students to progress in the world of work.”

Cllr Seward said ‘The reply I received was totally inadequate. It was suggested the need for a new school was still being worked upon. If North Walsham is to have a new school in time it needs to be in the Council future expenditure plans now.’

The scheme is aimed at current Year 9 students, who will choose a mentor which they will keep until they leave school.

The speed networking will be their chance to hear from potential mentors before they choose someone they have interacted well with. Over the course of Years 10 and 11, the students meet their mentors regularly.

Local groups reap rewards from North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Fund

Mentors are asked to commit to an average of one meeting per half term – if each meeting lasts an hour that’s 10 hours over two years. There is training available as well as a pack of activities. All mentors will need a DBS check.

- More than £14,000 was awarded in December

Students who have taken part in the scheme have spoken about how the experience helped build their confidence and self-esteem, as well as guiding them in their choices for the future. Mentors have also reported that taking part has been a rewarding experience, helping their own personal development, as well as ensuring that tomorrow’s workforce has the skills needed to be useful employees.

The latest round of North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Fund grants has been awarded supporting a wide range of groups.

The local causes who benefited from the latest round of funding include: · sir John Hurt trust - £2,000 towards Reminiscence Therapy to help those living with dementia and similar conditions, and to provide support for their carers. · swan (supporting women activities network) – £1900 to run a range of therapy based classes, delivered through different tutors and visits to art galleries and exhibitions. · alfred Cohen art Foundation – £2500 towards art workshops in North Norfolk with a special emphasis on the inclusion of young people · north norfolk Chamber opera – £2000 towards the cost of an 8-piece orchestra for 2 rehearsals and 3 performances of Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach · the Choir worstead – £1500 towards support costs of the Choir’s performances of Dido and Aeneas · about with Friends – £2125 towards 24 music sessions with About with Friends members with learning disabilities to help support their social, emotional and communication needs. · Merchants Place resource & Learning Centre – £2000 towards the Drawn Together project that will offer creative activities for local people to be more socially included and to increase their self-confidence to live a good life. The North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Fund Panel will next be meeting in March 2020. In order for complete applications to be considered by the Panel they will need to be submitted to the Council’s Health and Communities Team by Friday 28 February 2020. All organisations who are considering making an application are to contact Sonia Shuter on 01263 516173. Visit the Arts and Culture Fund page to download an applications pack and to learn more about how to make an application.

Kate added “We want our students to be inspired, motivated, confident, and full of self-belief. We believe that all of our students benefit from mentoring, and it should be an entitlement for all.”

For more information or to sign up contact Kate, on 01692 402581 or email workbasedlearning@northwalshamhigh.norfolk.sch.uk.

Clapham & Collinge Launch New Year Charity Lasting Power of Attorney Scheme

Make it your New Year's Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout January 2020. We will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are Age UK Norwich, Keeping Abreast, North Norfolk Community Transport and Cruse Bereavement Care Norwich.

Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them. Government research has made it clear that there are dangerous misconceptions about managing your affairs when you lose mental capacity….

• 73% of people think if a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. This is untrue. An LPA will however give you consent to access joint funds to pay and monitor financial aspects of a joint account.

• 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at

hospital, if you can't make them yourself. This is untrue. Medical decisions need the specific, agreed consent of the person involved, before a next of kin can make treatment or welfare choices on someone else's behalf.

(Powerofattorney.campaign.gov.uk, 2019) With this scheme we hope to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind.

what is a Lasting Power of attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (known as 'attorneys') to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf.

This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can't make decisions for yourself (where you 'lack mental capacity') or when you simply want to delegate the role to someone you trust.

there are two types of Lasting Powers of attorney: • Property & Financial Affairs • Health & Welfare

when can they be used? Property and Finances – as soon as it has been registered • At the point you no longer have sufficient capacity to make certain decisions yourself or; • While you are still able to make decisions but are physically unable to carry them out or you want

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

5

someone else to make decisions for you Health and Welfare – can only be used if you cannot make the decision yourself (unconscious or lacking capacity).

who can be an attorney? • A family member • A trusted friend • A professional

what happens if i don't make a Lasting Power of attorney? • No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

To claim your discount and book your January appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk Appointments must be booked by Friday 31st January and must take place by Friday 28th February 2020.

One for the Veggies!

Whether you have started the year doing Veganuary, or are just trying to have the odd meat free day, this recipe is one you definitely need to have in your repertoire. Even the determined meat eaters want a slice of this loaf once they smell it, as the flavour is so rich and full, and the textures are just gorgeous. This has been a few years in the making, having gone through various changes and adaptations, and is what we served on Christmas Day this year; needless to say, there was none left!

Cranberries and roast chestnuts can be purchased in most supermarkets, and although this isn’t the cheapest nut loaf recipe, it is so worth the extra pennies! Miso paste can be bought from all good health food stores, and keeps a long time in the fridge. You can add it to home made soups, as it adds a fabulous umami flavour, and having live cultures in it, is very good for your gut, so an all-round great purchase. Even if you’ve never been tempted by vegetarian food before, give this a go – I promise you will be converted!

Simmer for 10 mins, and then add in sage, chestnuts, cranberries and stir in the miso. Continue simmering for a further 10 to 15 mins until most of the water is absorbed and the lentils are soft. Take off the heat and stir in the oats, combining well. Pour mixture into the loaf tin and firm down a little with the back of a large spoon and bake in the oven for 35 – 40 mins, until slightly brown on the top. Run a spatula around the edges to loosen. Leave in tin to cool slightly, and turn out smartly onto a chopping board, knocking the bottom to loosen the loaf. Leave to stand for a further 15 mins to enable easy cutting MOTOR SERVICES LIMITED (I cover with foil and a clean tea towel.) 01692 405495 Can be portioned once cold (put in fridge to properly chill before cutting) and frozen in portions for easy roast dinners. Reheat in the foil at the bottom of the oven. Carolyn burn

Place onion, carrot and garlic in a couple tblsp olive oil in a deep frying pan or wok, and cook gently until getting soft giving the occasional stir, around 10 mins. Add in the lentils and stir well to coat in the oil, and then add in your stock and bring to boil.

Servicing - Tyres - Batteries

“In memory of her enthusiasm and encouragement of glass making, the society offers an annual prize,” says CGS Chair Sue Purser Hope. “The aim is to help a CGS member to fulfil an aspiration or add to their technical skill, something that they would find difficult without this prize.”

Renowned glass painter, Mark Angus is offering a CGS member the chance to be tutored and to work in his studio in Graz, Austria, this autumn. Amanda had been a student of Mark’s when he was teaching in the School of Art and Design, Bristol; 25 years ago, just as she was beginning her own glass journey.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

The sun was out at Happisburgh when the Lifeboat Station volunteers came out to help Big C with a coffee morning.

Let us help yyou… ou…

The station’s crewroom was open for refreshments, cake stall, competitions and tombola from 10am – 3pm. We had a large number of people coming to support us. A number of our volunteers have been affected by cancer, directly or indirectly, so we were inspired to raise funds for this Norfolk cancer charity. The day went so well and we were so pleased to raise £665 on the day and hopefully there will be more funds to come in. Zoe Harris from Big C also attended and was very pleased with our efforts on the day. We would like to thank all the people who supported us and enabled us to raise this fantastic amount.

Happisburgh rnLi Volunteers pagers have sounded for the first time in 2020.

Deputy Launching Authority, Paul Broomfield, received a call from HM Coastguard requesting help with a search for a missing person, so the pagers were set of with ‘Crew Assemble’ at 6:34pm on Saturday 11 January.

The volunteers were soon on station and after talking to HM Coastguard the stations D Class D-813 Russell Pickering was launched at 6:56pm on to a flat calm sea at high water. Sean Thurston was at the helm with David Loveday and Chris Risby as crew to search the coast line. Other RNLI volunteers assisted with the search on land helping Police and Bacton Coastguard. After around one hour the Police located the person inland and the search was called off; Russell Pickering was rehoused and made ready for service at 8pm. The RNLI is facing a Perfect Storm : our volunteers are busier than ever providing a world class rescue service but people are still drowning, however our income is down so we need more money to save more lives – investing in the future of lifesaving is vital. Fundraising like this is essential in order to enable us to carry on with this work. Visit rnLi.org/thePerfectstorm to donate.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Already this year we have had lots of requests for help with neutering cats and kitten under our £5 Neutering Campaign. We are only too happy to help in this way as there will be less unwanted kittens later this year. We do believe it has had an impact on the number of kittens needing our help and long may this continue.

Many people are not aware that a female cat can become pregnant from 4 months old, so it is important to neuter as soon as possible from this age. Of course, at that age, a kitten is not fully grown and if she does have kittens it will mean that, instead of enjoying life as the kitten she still is, she will be responsible for nourishing and caring for her own family instead

We are always dealing with requests for help with neutering feral cats and will be only too happy to lend one of our traps to catch them and pay for the cost of neutering at one of the vets we use. A new directive from our Head Office advises to also ensure that these cats are treated for fleas and worms and receive a single dose of vaccine for cat flu and feline parvovirus while at the vets. This will be paid for from branch funds..

At present, apart from older cats, Darcy, Phoebe and Bilbo in residence, we also have several young cats all under 1 year old. None of these have had the benefit of living in a home so are looking for new homes with experienced cat people who will give them plenty of time to adapt to their new surroundings. Milton, for instance, arrived with his mother and her younger kittens, having been living in someone’s garden. Mum and her young family have all been re-homed and, although still not happy with too much contact, he loves to play and will accept a fuss, but not if he is on his activity centre. Pearl, Benji, Brexit, Lennie, Izzy and Maddie have also learned to accept the love and care of their carers, and once settled, will give lots of pleasure to their new families. They do all need

homes with no young children and although some may prefer living with a companion cat, they would probably be better in homes without dogs.

Finally, apologies to Dick, Ray’s brother, for not mentioning, in our previous edition, that he helped lay the floor of the cats’ pens!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Remember the little hoglet Thimble who came to me in October with his eyes still closed? Well just look at him now! What a success story it has been. Come Spring he will be released. This makes all the hard work worthwhile.

A new one, Snowdrop, came into care on 18 January at only 290 grams. She was very cold and hungry and was found just before the frosty weather. She seems to be getting on ok.

SCOUTS FOCUS THEIR RADAR ON ACHIEVING EVEN MORE TOP AWARDS IN 2020! potatoes and other lunchtime snacks – all made individually by a really friendly team of volunteers.

Thanks to the tremendous support and thoughtfulness of Manager Lynn Kerslake and the amazing enthusiasm and encouragement of so many of her Neatishead volunteers, more than 60 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across North East Norfolk experienced a specially arranged visit with talks, and guides through each of the activity rooms at the Royal Air Force Air Defence Radar Museum (ADRM) on the site of the former Royal Air Force radar and control base RAF Neatishead, close to the village of Horning in the heart of the Norfolk Broads.

Sally Weekes, who had organised the Top Awards Celebration for the District Scouts, says that the Neatishead team (many were people who had worked at the RAF base when it was an operational centre of the nation's air defence and about the most secret place in Britain) were so helpful in settingup the event and extremely knowledgeable ensuring that two groups of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts each had a fascinating insight into the role Neatishead radar played in WWII and the Cold War, viewed the Bristol Bloodhound missile outside and were allowed to sit down and experience hands-on real equipment that once showed what the enemy was up, Cotishall Search and Rescue and dressing-up, as well as (possibly the biggest thrill of all!) sitting in the cockpit of a Jaguar ground-attack craft, and seeing the recently acquired cockpits from Lightning fighter aircraft. Our hosts also arranged for parents to have their own minitours and we were all able to enjoy the kind hospitality of the amazing catering team throughout the day who provided copious hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, jacket

Sally explained that this very special event was arranged to celebrate our young people who had achieved their Chief Scout Awards - the top award achievable in each Scouting Section. Sections from Aylsham, Buxton Lamas, Cromer, Hoveton & Wroxham, Mundesley, Rural (Roughton Mill), Salhouse, Sheringham and West Runton attended with 31 Beavers, the first and youngest section of the Scout Group generally aged between 6 and 8 years old, gaining their Bronze Awards; 27 Cub Scouts, the second section of the Scout Group following on from Beavers, young people generally aged between 8 and 10 years old, gaining their Silver Awards; and 22 Scouts, generally aged between 10 ½ to 14 years old, gaining their Gold Awards. They were also joined and supported by Explorers, 14 to 18 years old and several Scout Network members, 18 to 25 years old. We were also very pleased that our North Walsham Young Leader, Jack Cowell, made it back to Norfolk from Agricultural College to be presented with his very special Young Leader Belt for completing all of his Young !! Leader training.

When they were presented with their Awards by our host, ADRM Manager Lynn Kerslake, the young people cited several favourite activities which they particularly enjoyed whilst gaining their badges to achieve their Top Awards, and these included: Abseiling, Archery, Shooting, Outdoor

our case this month is a beautiful bichon Frise who is approaching 10 years of age.

stones have to be removed and the bladder thoroughly flushed in order to prevent further irritation. Samples of the uroliths have been sent away for analysis in order to help us modify her diet and hopefully prevent further production of these bladder stones.

She presented with blood in her urine and signs of cystitis. Prior to this she has passed tiny little stones with no problem, but on this occasion she was clearly having trouble. She was admitted to the practice for further tests to determine the extent of her problem. Both radiography (X-Rays) and ultrasonography can be used to identify bladder stones (uroliths) in the bladder and the kidneys. As you can see below, stones can be clearly visualised in the bladder, but fortunately there were none stuck in her urethra or within the kidneys. When there are high numbers of large stones causing clinical problems the best treatment option is surgery, so the decision was made to take her to theatre straight away.

Bladder stones can be a problem in cats and dogs and many small furries such as guinea pigs, so any recurrent episodes of cystitis are always worth having looked into if they don’t clear up as expected. Interestingly Dalmatians are even more prone to kidney stones than other dogs due to their inability to breakdown something called purine, so they often Holt’s ‘FEBRUARY have to be fed a very specific diet indeed, worth FILM FESTIVAL’ considering for an A mini film festival, at ‘The Venue’ Holt ComDalmatian owners out munity & Arts Centre, over the weekend of the there! 21, 22 and 23 February featuring/ Toby Morrell MRCVS celebrating films connected with Norfolk/ East Westover Vets Anglia, increasing the sense of Holt as a festival

January and February can be very hard months to get through if you are on your own or unable to get out, so we want to promote and provide opportunities for people to get together and support each other in ways that they will enjoy and will benefit both themselves and others’. The Cromer Good Neighbour Scheme, recently launched by CAN, is one of the new local initiatives designed to bring people together to get to know and help others in their community. Cromer’s scheme is one of several that CAN oversee across North Norfolk and Broadland which would welcome new people who would like to get involved. CAN also run ‘Connect’, a service whereby isolated people can be linked with an individual volunteer who can help them re-engage with social opportunities in their local area. CAN and the North Norfolk Volunteer Hub will be focusing on a number of communities in particular

Solicitor Advocate holds court at Mundesley Library

To kick off the Mundesley Library Friends 2020 programme of talks, Chris Brown from Fosters Solicitors in Norwich presented his case in a talk at Mundesley Library. Chris skilfully handled his topic, ensuring that his subject did not become a legal lecture, with a host of humorous anecdotes. He highlighted the case of Steve and Jackie, to de-bunk some of the myths presented as facts on TV courtroom dramas and explain the work of a defence lawyer whilst proving that the facts were not always as expected from the apparent evidence. He showed how Steve was, in fact, innocent of murder and, in another case, how a mosquito killed a mob leader. His talk gave insights into the worlds of criminal lawyers and pathologists and was peppered by

moments of humour such as the time he had to cross examine Judge John Deed (actor Martin Shaw) in a real case at Kings Lynn After his talk Chris answered numerous questions from his enthusiastic audience - shirking nothing and giving full reasons for his thoughts. Chris highlighted the closure of police stations and courtrooms around Norfolk but nominated one further afield as his favourite court – a tiny courtroom in Wales, situated above a record shop and whose waiting room was the café across the road meaning that the court usher used to cross the road, via a pelican crossing, in full regalia to call the next witness. The next event at Mundesley Library is on

Time for Chess?

All Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) Chess Clubs have recently switched to digital clocks to meet the demands of the English Chess Federation (ECF) and The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE)/The International Chess Federation. As a result of this, Norfolk Chess Clubs have been donating their analogue clocks to other organisations involved in encouraging new and returning chess players. Here, Greg Tebble of Norwich Dons Chess Club is seen gifting 5 clocks to Aylsham Library Chess Group. The recently formed Aylsham Library Chess Group meets in Aylsham library on the last Wednesday of every month.

Greg commented “Norfolk Chess Clubs, like Norwich Dons, are pleased their surplus equipment is now being used by young players in local schools as well as more mature players in the Aylsham Library Chess Group and elsewhere.

Hopefully this will help encourage more people to start learning chess or return to it in later life.” Greg Tebble of Norwich Dons Chess Club (standing) presenting 5 clocks to David Owen (left) and Jonathan Reeve (right), members of the Aylsham Library Chess Group.

Three Norfolk runners take home gold north norfolk athletes win 1st place in under 15s and under 13s cross country races

North Norfolk District Council’s Sporting Centre of Excellence project has once again proven a track record of success, with three

London Marathon for Parkinson’s UK

young athletes taking home gold medals in the most recent fixture.

Norfolk County Cross Country Championships were held in Thetford on Sunday 5 January with young runners from all over the county competing to represent the East of England.

Connie Easter took home 1st place in the Girls U13, whilst Hattie Reynolds and Henry Jonas taking 1st place in the Girls U15 and Boys U15 races respectively.

All three will now represent the East of England in the prestigious London Mini Marathon races which precede the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April 2020

Christine thorne will be running this year’s London Marathon on 26 april in aid of the north walsham group that supports local people with Parkinson’s Disease.

A further 17 athletes from the endurance squad competed in the Championships, from which a number will be selected to compete for Norfolk in the National Inter County XC Championships, held in Loughborough at the beginning of March.

Christine’s husband Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease three years ago.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disorder which carries a wide range of symptoms. The disease can develop at varying rates, the cause is unknown and there is no cure. Symptom management with drugs is the only way forward. Symptoms include the classic Parkinson’s tremor, muscle cramps, reduced mobility, depression and sleeplessness. Parkinson’s sufferers are also more likely to develop Alzheimers in old age.

The project offers young people, aged 11-14 years from a number of North Norfolk’s secondary schools, specialist coaching in order to hone their sporting abilities. The top-class coaching being offered in netball, hockey, cricket and endurance running has led to a number of successes, with local young athletes excelling in their respective sports.

The Parkinson’s UK charitable Trust not only funds research into the disease but also organises local support groups. The group in North Walsham, which Christine’s husband Dave attends, has around 50 members with wide-ranging needs, some of whom are unable to attend the monthly meetings or the regular exercise group. It is for these people that Christine is fundraising – to be able to provide transport to meetings as required and to also subsidise the various activities the group offers.

Collective heating oil buying combats winter heating blues – and helps support community projects

You can sponsor Christine at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/christine-thorne.

With the colder weather of late January and then February on its way, a big worry for many people who live in ‘off-gas’ areas is the cost of heating oil, so a Norfolk charity is encouraging consumers to buy collectively and save money – and help support community projects at the same time.

Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk runs a collective buying service that helps make buying heating oil less stressful and more manageable. ‘ThinkingFuel’ offers consistently low prices on heating oil by encouraging people to buy as part of a bulk-buy scheme.

Your legal matters in safe hands for generations

“Heating oil is an unregulated commodity” explains Community Action Norfolk’s Chief Executive, Jon Clemo. “Unlike mains gas and electricity, there are no rules and regulations or price controls. Oil can be subject to dramatic price fluctuations and you can’t easily buy it in small helpings just when you need it.”

Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

Comparing prices for oil is very difficult for the consumer because of fluctuations in price between days, quantities ordered, locations and delivery times. It pays to be part of a collective buying scheme like ThinkingFuel, which are increasingly popular because they offer a fair, flexible and accessible way to buy oil.

“Everyone in the scheme gets a really low price on their oil because it’s bought in bulk. All our members pay the same low price per litre no matter how much they order and buying from ThinkingFuel also helps us at CAN support community projects across the county as well as combat fuel poverty in Norfolk.” said Mr Clemo.

ThinkingFuel is already well established with three thousand members across Norfolk. The bulk ordering takes place on two key days each month to maximise savings, which is when members can get the best price, but they can order oil on any working day of the month and still get a competitive price.
