Do I do?
by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
getting married is a legal contract. that’s why people need a lawyer to get ‘unmarried’; or, at least, the legal system oversees and regulates divorce.
The legal act with the lowest level of mental capacity necessary is that of marrying. That could explain a lot, ha ha; I hear you say!
The Court of Protection, which is the section of the court system which oversees the affairs of those unable to manage them for themselves, has recently granted permission for a 28-yearold man to marry his fiancée, even though he lacks mental capacity to manage his property and affairs.
The groom, called “P” in the reporting of the case, so as to protect his identity, has had learning difficulties since childhood. The loss of his leg in a road traffic accident resulted in him receiving an injury compensation award of £1,500,000. Adrian Mundell, P’s ‘deputy’ (i.e. the person appointed to manage P’s finances) spent P’s compensation on buying P a home and has invested the rest for P.
Early in 2019 P announced his intention to marry a woman, whom he met three years ago and who now lives with him in his home, along with her two children. One is tempted to ask Caroline Aherne’s question, on the eponymous Mrs Merton chat show, to Debbie McGee:
“What was it that first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”, but that might be unfair.
Adrian had serious concerns about P’s decision to marry, and especially its financial implications. P had made a Will leaving everything to his parents; but as marriage revokes a Will, P would be intestate and his new wife his primary beneficiary, if P died. Adrian felt he had to take steps and so applied to the Court to prevent the marriage. As a reason he gave P’s privately-expressed indecision about the marriage and the doctor’s assessment that P is easily persuaded, has difficulty saying ‘no’, is very vulnerable and is open to being exploited. Adrian was concerned that P did not understand that if he married, and then divorced, his wife would have a financial claim. Adrian applied to the Court for a declaration that P did not have mental capacity to marry.
The judge did not agree. He noted that P had already been considered to have capacity to make a Will, for which the necessary degree of mental capacity is ‘higher than that needed validly to contract a marriage’. He said that people can have capacity to marry, without needing to understand how divorce financial arrangements work.
The judge said that the amount of P’s
compensation had been for his needs alone, and so, if the marriage went ahead and then ended in divorce, the scope of the claim of the wife would “necessarily be extremely limited”. The judge added that there were numerous legal authorities which have emphasised the near-immunity of a personal injury award from a divorce financial claim, and so, the divorcing-wife’s claim would be limited to relieving her serious financial hardship only.
And so, let us hope that they both live happily ever after.

North Norfolk District supports local businesses people to continue to come to the town centre during gas main works and use its shops and facilities’. to support local businesses nnDC is to offer 2 hours free parking during gas main works in north walsham town Centre
The District Council has decided to take the decision to provide two hours free parking on the sites at Bank Loke and Vicarage Street, where nearly 150 free two-hour parking bays will be made available in the town for the duration of the gas works in the area. These arrangements will be in place from Thursday 30 January and over the coming days NNDC will formalize the arrangements for the issuing of tickets through the parking meters.
Following discussions with concerned business owners, the Chamber of Trade and local Councilors, a temporary solution has been found whilst Triio and Cadent are undertaking gas works in North Walsham Town Centre. NNDC has taken positive action to support retail and other businesses in the Town Centre by agreeing to suspend short stay parking charges in the Bank Loke and Vicarage Street Car Parks.
Due to timescales attached to grant funding which NNDC has accessed for Electric Vehicle Charge points, there will unavoidably be some works at Vicarage Street Car Park carried out by the District Council during March, which is not possible to reschedule.
Cllr Eric Seward, Deputy Council Leader and a Councillor for North Walsham said: “It was important for the Council to quickly provide support to shops and businesses in the town centre during this difficult period. The provision of two-hour free parking in the town’s major car parks should encourage
This decision recognises and seeks to address the disruption anticipated in the Town Centre through these necessary infrastructure works, particularly the difficulty accessing the marketplace and the potential loss of on-street parking spaces.
NNDC wishes to support North Walsham businesses and get their message out to all that the town is very much open for business; NNDC is already committed to supporting the vitality and vibrancy of the town centre through the Heritage Action Zone funding, which will see the Council and a range of partners make significant investment in the town centre environment following the completion of the gas main works.
Discussions with regards to the management of the Town Centre works and the wider impacts on businesses and the general public will be monitored by the District Council, with the Town Council and Chamber of Trade.

In addition to offering two-hours free parking in the Bank Loke and Vicarage Street Car Parks, the District Council is also discussing whether the Town Council wishes to temporarily relocate the weekly market whilst the gas main works take place through the town centre.

Ode to a Mother-in-law
No matter what I say or do, it's never good enough! As far as Ma-in-law’s concerned, my housework makes her scoff! The house is far too dusty; my cooking makes her sneer; My ironing is just a joke, compared to hers, I fear. So I've been saving really hard, to buy a special treat. A holiday for Ma-in-law, a pre-paid, one way seat! Somewhere hot and far away, where she can fly or sail. Then I can live my life in peace, on this I will not fail! Or maybe she can take a cruise around the freezing fjords, The temperatures will match her moods and icy, biting words! I’m saving all my money to make this dream come true, And pray she sails right off the end, or flies into the blue! Frances Wraight
Long Stay Parking will continue to be available at all the Pay and Display Car Parks across North Walsham. The Mundesley Road and New Road car parks remain unaffected by the provisions at Bank Loke and Vicarage Street.

The Thrill of Love by Stage Direct Following on from last year’s highly successful run of Nigel Manson's comedy Miss Marble strikes : Again! at The Little Theatre in Sheringham, Stage Direct are changing the theme this spring to a drama with a play called The Thrill of Love.
This highly acclaimed award winning play depicts and dramatises the true life story of Mrs Ruth Ellis (the last woman to be hanged in England in 1955 aged 28 years) who shot and killed her lover, David Blakely. There was a public outcry and the sense of injustice, major factors that lead to the abolition of the death penalty.
Ruth made her mark as a blonde bombshell and was deemed a reporter’s dream for her tragic affair with an upper class racing driver. It may be said her lifestyle helped to condemn her in court as indeed her remorseless attitude added to her troubles. Some of the characters are real in this depiction but
some are mortal manifestations of Ruth’s lifestyle at the time. This play promises to be an exciting drama that will have its audience on the edge of their seats as it weaves its way through the sometimes brutal realities of Ruth’s daily life and loves.
“The cast will go through an emotional rollercoaster during the performance which is both challenging and exhilarating at the same time” said Director Derek Bull, “In parts, the action and dialogue will give you goose bumps at the senseless brutality of the law at the time. This play is designed to make us think and examine our own lives, even today, which is what great theatre should achieve, and I think this play does just that.”
The Thrill of Love runs on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March at Sheringham Little Theatre at 7.30pm.
Tickets are available from their Box Office on 01263

From Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk
Dear All, I would like to start by thanking all those who voted for me in the recent General Election. A 14,000 strong majority was a clear mandate from North Norfolk to get Brexit done, and to move forward with addressing the many important issues you talked to me about during the election campaign.
I’m pleased to say that within weeks I’m doing just that. The EU Withdrawal Agreement has been passed and, on 31 January, we will leave the European Union with the votes of the 58.9% in North Norfolk finally respected. Both locally and in Westminster, my team is taking shape. I’m proud to have a constituency office in North Walsham – where I have had so much support during the last year. Soon I will look forward to hosting regular surgeries around the constituency.
North Norfolk will be my first priority. In these first few weeks I have hit the ground running, working hard on behalf of many constituents. You may have seen me asking questions in the House about improving our ambulance response times, protecting our farming community, the environment, and what the government is doing to help our High Streets.
I have met with Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to discuss the urgent issues surrounding ambulance response times, the need for improved facilities at Cromer Hospital (with additional mental health support), and met with local ambulance staff to discuss their concerns and learn how we might provide a more responsive ambulance service for this area. This is being followed up by meeting with the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital chiefs: I want to see our Accident & Emergency unit radically improved, which will benefit many North Norfolk residents.
I have been made the Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on moving towards carbon Net Zero, and am meeting with ministers to urge them to help the farming community who are under serious threat, with some of their irrigation licences being revoked.
Of course, every day, I’m helping many people with queries and issues, and I am loving meeting incredible constituents all around North Norfolk who do so much for their communities.
There is much to do, but I am enjoying representing you and trying to make our lives better in our wonderful North Norfolk home.
I look forward to seeing you soon.

Say Cheeese!
In an effort to wean myself and the family off crisps after too much consumption over the festive season, I have come up with these super tasty, healthy and savoury oat cakes, which are full of good ingredients and very easy to make. They are heavenly on a cheese board, or a great accompaniment to home made soups, as a change from bread, and so are very handy for anyone like me who is trying to cut down on their wheat intake. True there is spelt flour in there, but it is a much easier flour to digest than regular wheat flour, and consequently kinder to your tummy. Medium oatmeal can be purchased cheaply at most health food stores, and ground flaxseed can be obtained from Lidls cheaply, and also at many other supermarkets, although prices do vary. You don’t need much parmesan to get that wonderful rich, sharp flavour, so either get a small amount from the cheese counter, or shop savvy again at Lidls. With the addition of tasty
poppy seeds, you have an oatcake choc full of fibre and heart healthy olive oil – so much better for you than crisps!
Poppy seed and Parmesan oatcakes
5oz porridge oats 5oz medium oatmeal Salt to taste Pepper to taste Tsp Italian herbs or thyme (optional) Heaped tblsp poppy seeds Tblsp ground flaxseed Handful of flaked almonds, broken up Hpd tblsp spelt flour 2 hpd tblsp finely grated parmesan cheese 75ml extra virgin olive oil 200ml very hot water
● Form into 2 balls and rest for a few minutes, and then roll out onto a floured surface to a depth of a few millimetres. ● Cut out rounds with a biscuit cutter to your desired size, and place onto floured baking trays into a preheated oven on 180° for approximately 25 mins, or until lightly golden and cooked through. ● Cool on a wire rack, and keep in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze on the day. Carolyn Burn
● Combine all of the dry ingredients together in a large bowl and then add the parmesan and mix well. ● Pour the oil into the middle, and add in the hot water, bringing it all together with a large knife, until you have a dough.
North Walsham Probus Club
Last October half term 19 families with school aged children were able to enjoy a week’s holiday at a caravan site with lots of amenities for the children to enjoy. Families with pre-school children are offered holidays in June or July so in 2019 24 holidays were paid for which meant 98 people were able to ‘take a break’ which would not have been possible without AFIA.
Many of us look forward to the opportunity to take a break from our everyday routines and enjoy time away with family or friends, but for some families that is just an impossible dream. The speakers at the January meeting of North Walsham and District Probus Club were Sandra Sacks and Sandra Bendall, two ladies who help to make this dream come true for families across the Norwich diocese through AFIA, Away From It All Holidays, a Mother’s Union charity. They began their talk with a brief outline of Mother’s Union (MU) which was founded in 1876 by Mary Summner, a vicar’s wife. Mary wanted to bring mothers of all social classes together so that they could support one another through the difficulties and responsibilities of parenthood and family life. In 1898 the North Walsham branch was started and continues to this day supporting marriage and family life particularly those whose family life has met with adversity. Through the fund raising efforts of MU members AFIA are able to offer a week’s holiday in a caravan on the coast to give families a chance to recuperate, spend time making good memories with their children and relax in a non-stressful situation. Families are referred by a range of professionals such as doctors, health visitors and head teachers. Carefully omitting names, Sandra read us some of the letters of application which made us realize what difficult situations some families experienced.
To draw their talk to a close, the two Sandras read us some of the thank you letters and cards that they had received and these really brought home to us how much the holiday meant to the families and in some cases changed their lives for the better.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have had even more requests for help with neutering under our £5 Neutering Campaign and some of these cats have already been neutered. We have also been dealing with neutering several more feral cats, some of these with the help of Marian, who was one of our fosterers. Others have turned up at a feral colony where we have previously been involved.
We are happy to advise that Darcy, one of the cats mentioned last time, has now been rehomed and we are keeping our fingers crossed that an enquiry from someone to give Phoebe a new home will mean she will also be leaving us soon. Someone has also shown an interest in Milton and Pearl and we are waiting for them to decide whether they will offer them a home. If this does not materialise there are several other people interested in giving them and the other timid young cats homes too. As mentioned last time, these young cats do need homes with experienced people willing to give them time to settle and adapt to their new surroundings. I was therefore delighted to receive an email from the new family of two of our young cats rehomed by us last year and their owner has given us permission to share their story below :
“Freddy and Dolly were both very timid to begin with, it took them quite a few months to be comfortable going outside and not be frightened by the slightest puff of wind, but now they happily come and go and are both great mousers. Freddie is a typical ‘Tom’, very cuddly, a bit naughty and very greedy. Dolly is still wary of too much handling but loves a back massage and is very sweet natured. They get on well most of the time, chasing each other around the house and garden like ‘Tom and Jerry’ but they have their own favourite places to sleep. Last, but not least, we love them both to bits.”
Not only was it lovely to hear how Freddie and Dolly had settled in but we also had news this week on Artful and Spit (now called Olive and PROVIDING FRIENDLY, EXPERIENCED & PROFESSIONAL VETERINARY CARE
Freddie (on left) and Dolly, looking very relaxed in their new home
Liquorice) who were rehomed to Stables. They too are happy in their new home and Olive will rub around her feeder’s legs at mealtimes. They will also let the ladies with horses there stroke them and are also great at keeping vermin under control. Obviously, the right home for them too.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Hedgehog Haven
TO THE ANIMALS OF NORFOLK FOR OVER 125 YEARS
Pictured is Snowdrop who is gaining weight nicely. She is now 450 grams. The mild weather has meant that the hogs in the outside pens have been waking up, but it's much too early to release as there could well be a cold snap and their natural food cannot be found - so if you do see a hedgehog out at night please put out some food to help them.

The RAF Air Defence & Radar Museum needs you!
RAF Air Defence Radar Museum - Grant from Love of the Broads
The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum is proud to announce the success of a recent application for grant funding from Love of the Broads.
Last year the RAF Radar Museum in Neatishead had another very successful year.
The grant will initially be used to record volunteers' memories in regard to their service years at RRH Neatished.
Not only did we celebrate being open for 25 years but we grew in volunteers . We are open 4 days a week (and each Bank Holiday Monday) and we need more volunteers to join our happy band of over 60 women and men who help keep us going. We are looking especially for people to help in our lovely cafe on a Saturday and as room guides.
Stage two of this project will be recording visitors and former Neatishead personnel who may wish to share similar stories. Manager Lynn Kerslake said she was delighted that this project has now come to fruition.
We seek volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80. We can guarantee that you will have an enjoyable time and make new friends and you will be helping a charity to keep going and help us continue to provide an award-winning experience to our visitors. We offer our volunteers a friendly place to come to and we organise an annual trip and a Christmas lunch as a thank you for all your time, plus there are free teas and coffees always available in the crew room.
Grateful thanks go to Love of the Broads as it now gives the Museum funding to purchase relative equipment and funding to display these precious memories both in digital/audio format.
Accepting the cheque in January in the Cold War Room at the Museum was Trustees Carl Lamb and Nick Farmer, along with Peter Howe from Love of the Broads.
why not visit us and find out more? For more information telephone the Manager 01692 631485 or email curator@radarmuseum.co.uk
With the festive season finally over, many of us have made New Year Resolutions to make our own healthier diet and lifestyle choices. These choices could also benefit our pets! Exercising is a great way of getting both you and your pet active and also a great way of bonding with your pet. Regular exercise helps keep the heart and lungs healthy, build muscle, maintain a healthy weight and provide mental stimulation. Don’t forget exercise is not only for our canine pets, cats can be encouraged to exercise by playing with toys or using “treat balls” to give them their usual food ration, whilst rabbits can be encouraged to exercise with foraging games.
relying on the numbers. It is far better to use a body condition score which assesses characteristics such as ease of feeling the ribs and waistline to determine your pets’ ideal weight.
Get your pet “summer ready” with Toll Barn Vets Don’t worry – Toll Barn Vets is here to help! We understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to help your pet achieve their target weight and even to work out if your pet needs to work on their festive bulge. Our friendly team of veterinary nurses are offering free of charge nutrition clinics for our patients which include body condition scoring, advice on diets and feeding as well as general health and exercise advice depending on your pet’s condition. The clinics are free and available for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. To book an appointment with our friendly team please give us a call on 01692 407126.

We understand it can be really difficult to monitor our pets’ weight and resist those appealing eyes asking for treats however, research from the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) suggests 92% of owners were unaware that their pet was an unhealthy weight. This is important because as little as 20% extra weight can significantly increase the risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory disease and certain cancers.

Pets, much like humans, come in many different shapes and sizes and relying on numbers can be dangerous. When assessing a pets weight it is not just the number on the scales which is important. It is equally as important to use a body condition score technique rather than just

Dear Margaret,
I just want to say thank you to the four people who came to my aid when I was knocked over by a reversing car in Lidl's car-park on the evening of 15 January
These passers-by attended to me, looked after me so well and stayed with me for around an hour afterwards.
!!
Unfortunately I was not able to take their names (I know there was a couple and a mother and daughter and I remember the daughter's name was Gabriella) but I want to thank all of them for their help. I would not have been able to get off the ground without them so I want to thank them all very much and let them know how grateful I was for their assistance.

The Gallant Gardener
starting the new year well - growing in Containers
By the time you read this, we will be into February. This is the time of the year that I start to get the itch to sow seeds and plant, looking forward to new crops and displays of flowers.
The first thing I do in the New Year is to buy my seed potatoes, laying them up in seed trays and put them in a cool lit place so that they start to chit! In other words they start to grow shoots that will eventually produce more potatoes.
A variety of squash which I grew last year called Honey Boat is a very sweet squash and makes wonderful soup, squash chips and will roast. This variety takes no looking after once you have planted it out and I think you would be able to grow this in a container. take three potatoes preferably an early variety or a salad type that you enjoy eating and lay on the compost. Cover again with another 12” of compost and water. Keep in a cool well-lit place - greenhouse/conservatory - until the frosts have finished then they can go outside.
The second thing is to decide what I am going to grow, with both flowers and vegetables in mind, looking at the catalogues and making a list of types and varieties to try. I used to grow lots of different vegetables and never eat half of them! So the rule is to grow only what you like.

The third thing is to get some potatoes in containers for a very early taste. Everybody can grow something in containers, whether they be large pots, wooden boxes, guttering or as I have done used the old plastic rubbish bins. I have cut them down to about two-thirds of their size, you can use plastic compost sacks or any large container. I then drill holes in the side near the bottom, so that they don't dry out completely but there is drainage.
I then fill the bottom with a mixture of compost, manure and soil for about 12” or 30cm,
As the potatoes grow continue to fill with compost around the potato tops, until it gets to the top of the bin. The early potato will be flowering in about 10 to 12 weeks and then you can dig down and find your new potatoes. Don't tip them all out, just look for the bigger ones and the smaller potatoes will continue to grow, this way you will maximise your crop.
It is surprising what you can grow in containers, on a wall, on a concrete floor using pots or bags, it is endless fun experimenting whether it is peas, beans, rhubarb, salads, fruit or flowers, go on give it a go!
In Africa they use bags a lot for growing and also a system called Keyhole Gardens, where a hole for adding compost is in the middle and will continually feed the garden, look them up on the internet.

Inside Cromer’s New Accessible Toilets Cromer’s Visitor Centre has been fitted with Changing Places assisted accessible facilities
North Norfolk District Council, with supplier Closomat, have installed a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet in the Cromer Visitors Centre building.
With Council investment, Cromer’s Visitors Centre now has one of the most advanced and accessible facilities available. The Changing Places toilet provides accessibility at the focal point for the whole North Norfolk area, making it more equipped for the increased tourist interest in the town. Project Support Officer Darren Payne explained that “Without such toilet facilities, tens of thousands of disabled people are deprived of enjoying numerous activities most of us take for granted, as they can’t find suitable toilet facilities. In worst case scenarios, they face having to be changed on the floor, or just not visit somewhere”
The Changing Places toilets provide users with a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench and either a tracking or mobile hoist system. They are sufficiently spacious, with due care and attention paid towards the requirements of the user. Each toilet holds adequate space in the changing area for the user and up to two carers, with a centrally placed toilet (with room) either side and a screen or curtain to provide privacy. They are
equipped with a non-slip floor, large waste bins for disposable pads and a wide tear-off paper roll to cover the benches, upholding cleanliness.
Cllr. Emma Spagnola said: “Having a Changing Places in Cromer is going to make such a difference to so many disabled adults, children and their families. Not only for local people but for tourists too, for example, I am aware of two families who are already planning their summer holidays here because this facility will make the town so much more accessible. Everyone is entitled to have this basic need met and I am very proud of NNDC for jumping on board and providing this. I am looking forward to see more rolled out across the District.”
Closomat has become the leader in the design, supply, installation and subsequent maintenance of Changing Places; visit their website for support information for all involved in the specification and build process.
The Council Cromer Changing Places facility is the first of 7 planned across North Norfolk, with one planned for each town; Proposed facilities in Fakenham and Wells-Next-The-Sea are due to begin construction in early 2020.

ROAD TO EVERYWHERE
The county of big skies and beaches Is the county where Nelson was born, Where undulating farmland Borders the purple-red light of the dawn.
They may call it the road to nowhere But with millennia of history unique, Shaped by the Wash and North Sea’s coastline – Though ebbing away as we speak.
With ancient stones, cathedrals, museums, Norwich, the Fine City, stands tall. War survivor, revived, multi-cultured – Confident beyond the city wall. Rich-harvested fields, ploughed and scattered. Coastal waters yield seafood and power. Inland stately homes and royal turrets. History-laden churches with circular tower.
No motorway arteries, but reed-swaying Broads. The county of tradition at ease. Village-green patchwork and character-laden towns. Norfolk’s thousand good reasons which please.

Walking netball helps all ages keep active !
"
!
Did you enjoy playing netball at school and want to get back into it at a gentle pace? or maybe you are just seeking a way to find fitness in a fun friendly setting?
A walking netball group in North Norfolk is helping people achieve those goals and are looking for more people to join them. The hour-long sessions are at Erpingham’s Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm and Friday mornings from 10.30am.
Coach Ros Fretwell said “We have people of all ages and abilities, from teenagers to pensioners, who come and enjoy the sessions. Some have not played netball since school and want to do it again to get active. Others simply enjoy a social way of keeping fit and boosting their mental health and wellbeing.”
Walking netball is similar to the core game, but with no running or jumping and more time to hold on to the ball.
The Erpingham sessions have been running for two years, on the MUGAs basketball court, but have now acquired netball posts and there are plans to have a properly marked out court too. Sessions cost £2 at the MUGA which is next to village hall (postcode NR11 7QD).

Find me a woman in her 40s who doesn’t want to knock a few years off her appearance!
With many friends now in their late forties, several have snuck off to have various forms of cosmetic enhancement, whether it be dental implants/whitening, breast implants or the odd dose of Botox.
As for me, both bank balance and intuition advised to grow old gracefully!
But all worthy intentions fast evaporated when the opportunity came to visit Dr Gheyi at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. What I really wanted him to tackle was something that no amounts of facials (a private addiction) seemed able to fade – horrible, horrible age spots.
From my early forties, these dark freckles have been multiplying. I’ve already got the hands of an octogenarian, but hands don’t really bother me. It’s the face that counts. I can just about grin and bear laughter lines, and gravity’s pull hasn’t yet begun in earnest, but these dark spots really annoy me. I’ve tried every concealer imaginable – and none of them work. If anything, they highlight the problem.
Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is situated in new buildings just outside Wroxham. Dr Sanjay Gheyi is the man in charge, and the fact that he is a practicing GP four days a week at Coltishall Surgery, and regularly attends medical conferences worldwide on the subject of cosmetic enhancement, is immensely reassuring. The clinic boasts some pretty hefty equipment – and the last thing one wants is a novice at the driving wheel! We’ve all heard horror stories of how relatively simple procedures can go wildly wrong!
For the first session, Dr Gheyi did an overview of my skin, focussing on the age spots. He explained he could treat them with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which would fade them, if not cause them to disappear completely. He also stressed the need to wear sun screen each and every day of the year. But I do wear sunscreen, Doctor, honest. He pointed out that it’s often easy to forget the sides of one’s face when applying cream of any type – which is exactly where my sun spots are appearing.
Dr Gheyi took some particularly ghastly photos of the age spots, which he blew up and showed me on screen. This was by far the worst part of the session - a brown spot which maybe measures 3 millimetres at most was suddenly expanded to 30cms in diameter – and looked like a nasty explosion of molten toffee. Photo session over, Dr Gheyi asked me to hop up onto the couch, and relax. He wanted to test the IPL procedure out on me to see how I’d react.
of the spots. The sensation was rather like an elastic band twanging on one’s skin – not exactly painful, just a little strange. The area was a bit hot and tingly for a couple of hours afterwards but soon settled down. I was told to avoid sun for the next 48 hours, and to rebook for a follow-up session when treatment would commence in earnest! In the meantime, I could expect the age spot that had been zapped to possibly turn browner, before beginning to fade. At best, Dr Gheyi said the pigment might rise to the surface, and simply flake off.
Two weeks later, by which time the spot had definitely faded, I turned up for a full session with Dr Gheyi. This time the IPL machine was set to a slightly higher level, and the zapping process began in earnest! Again, there was no discomfort during or after the treatment which lasted a mere ten minutes, and in next to no time I was back in Norwich trying out the various tester potions that Dr Gheyi had given me. They’re all made by the American company, Agera, and amounted to a facial cleanser, a serum, a retinol based cream, a moisturizer and a sun block. This is skin care with expertise but without frills – the products are unscented and highly tested/medically researched. I used them for a week. In all honesty, I can say that my skin felt a lot smoother than usual, and the sunscreen in particular was brilliant – non-greasy, and making my skin feel silky
Three weeks later, I returned for my final session. By this time the offending spot had faded to being almost unnoticeable, and when I happened to mention where I was going to friends and family, and then pointed to the offending age spot, I was met with looks suggesting I was mad to worry about such an inconsequential blot! A final blast with the IPL, and within two weeks, just in time for Christmas, the sun spots had gone!
All well and good, except now I’m vaguely hooked! Maybe try micro-dermoabrasion, depilation (via IPL) and filling treatment (botox or restylane). Watch this space ‌

Whilst I put on the black-out glasses, Dr Gheyi explained what IPL actually is. Intense pulsed light is a broadband light within the visible spectrum. To a lay person, it amounts to short sharp bursts of very, very bright light. No UVA or UVB is involved, and the treatment is utterly safe. The IPL laser machine is top spec – rather than one of the cheaper portable versions that beauty salons tend to use.
The IPL laser machine began to hum into action and Dr Gheyi fiddled with various buttons to set it to deliver the correct duration of pulse, and strength of light energy for my skin. He then did a test run on the largest

North Walsham Table Tennis League Handicap Derby goes to the wire proved crucial as firstly she fought from
The opening rounds of the two Handicap Cups saw the first matches played under the new handicapping system introduced by the Cup Committee. The new system sees players use a grid to convert handicaps into a head start for the lower ranked player or doubles pairing with sets played to 21 by two clear points. Each battle is the best of three sets with Cup ties as always following a best of nine format.
In the first round of the Handicap Singles Cup a North Walsham derby saw Echoes Frank Weston (4), Joe Finnegan (6) and John Chapman (5) battle Delta's Tony Bispham (4), Lorna Stoker (6) and Sarah Tudhope (4). Bispham and Tudhope both took a single against Weston, while both Finnegan and Chapman took braces. A maximum for Stoker
behind in the second and won a series of great rallies to beat Finnegan in a battle of an even start 21-11, 25-23. Later Stoker (+1) edged Chapman 21-19, 23-21 and then with a two point start courtesy of the handicaps, she won the decisive ninth against Weston 19-21, 21-9, 21-13 to seal Delta's 5-4 win.
Backhander's Teucer Wilson (-4), Paul Warner (-6) and Whil De Neve (-1) hosted North Walsham Beta's Ben Lester (1), Irving Watson (-1) and Richard Porritt (0). Watson played a solid game with his new bat to take a maximum, but Backhanders came through 5-3.
Elsewhere in the first round, Alpha's David Binns, Andy Beane and Tom Baldock-Yaxley won 8-1 away to Seaflames Barracudas, Cobras were beaten 5-3 by Aylsham Enterprise
Two big home matches in February for the Vikings as they continue their quest for promotion to London & South East Premier, one of four fifth tier Leagues in rugby’s pyramidal structure. This Saturday (15th) second placed Colchester visit Scottow Park, with fourth placed Harpenden, the only side to have beaten them this season, due two weeks later. With seven games left they lead the table with 88 points, with Colchester on 69, Haberdashers 66 and Harpenden 62.
and Foxtrots gained a walkover against Mundesley E.
In the first round of the Handicap Doubles Cup, North Walsham Beta's Richard Porritt, Ben Lester and Stuart Hook hosted Seaflames Barracuda's Shelley Betts, Ray Amo and Rex Parfitt and came through 8-1. Barracudas had starts between 7-12 and serves played a key part in this one while there were plenty of 21-19 and deuce sets. Elsewhere, Foxtrots had started to fight-back from 0-4 down before being beaten 5-2 by Mundesley A, Echoes went down 5-1 to Gresham's School A but three home teams – Alpha, Cobras and Deltas all gained walkover wins.
6-11 halftime deficit despite playing uphill and losing two players to yellow cards.
The Raiders finished second in Eastern Counties North, going through to the Eastern Counties Shield competition along with winners Norwich Union and the top two sides from the South and West Divisions: Newmarket, Cottenham, Colchester 3rds and Sudbury 2nds.
These matches continue a challenging run of fixtures with home victories over Haberdashers (25 -5) & Priorians (45-7), and wins at Eton Manor (26-19) & Brentwood (13 -10). The latter was particularly impressive: the Essex side, who had won nine of their last ten, have a significant slope on their pitch but the Vikings turned over a
North Norfolk Vikings
Two Colts players have been chosen for regional teams. Jamie Hooker (pictured), who recently made his Vikings debut, was selected for Eastern Counties Under 20s, and Henly Brightman for London & South East Counties Under 18s. Jamie went to Aylsham High School and Henly to Flegg. Meanwhile ex Youth player Jack van Poortvliet, now at Leicester Tigers, was included in the England Under 20s squad.
North Norfolk Vikings have been action over two weekends at Norfolk County championships held at the UEA Sports Park in Norwich. This competition is for all county qualifiers.
The Vikings took a small team of three boys and five girls over both weekends. They had 59 individual events with 17 final races and the team came away with 41 personal best times which is a 69.49% success. The top three placings from heats and finals were six 1st, three 2nd and two 3rds. The team came away with three gold medals, two silvers and one bronze.
Lead Coach Sam Watts said “This was excellent for our small team I was very proud of all the swimmers over the two weekends”.
North Norfolk Vikings next competition is 22/23 of February at the Warwick Thompson meet in Thetford.
