TONKA BEAN CRÈME BRÛLÉE

A dessert to literally die for (though don’t worry, ours is quite safe!) Tonka beans, harvested ecologically from deep within the Amazon, are a hugely sought-after delicacy throughout the world for their unique, intense flavour. However they also contain a fair amount of coumarin, a toxin that can actually kill you if eaten in quantity. “As long as you

Your One-Stop Garage

don’t use a copious amount of it – obviously a copious amount could cause death – it really is delicious,” says Thomas Raquel, head pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Le Bernardin in New York. In fact it’s banned in the US, so M. Raquel must have a reliable ‘source’ from South America that we’ll say no more about…

Our chefs don’t have to smuggle tonka beans in from the windfarms after dark as they are quite legal in the UK. So all the wonderful flavours are available for you to try in Reis’ amazing crème brulee. We are open for dinner every night from 5-6pm (Early Evening menu) and 6 – 9.30pm (a la carte), although we are always busy so best to book your table on 01263 512412. And of course afternoon tea every day 2 – 4.30pm! ingredients • 8 tonka beans • 8 egg yolks • 110g of caster sugar • 900ml of double cream • caster sugar for dusting

Air Conditioning

Method 1. For the brûlée, toast the tonka beans in the oven for 10 minutes at 150⁰C/Gas mark 2. Peel the skin off and chop them into pieces. 2. Whisk the yolks and sugar in a bowl. Bring the cream to the boil and pour it on the top of the yolk and sugar. Add the chopped tonka beans and infuse 10 minutes 3. Pass through 4 layers of muslin and skim. Fill up 12 cups or small ovenproof dishes with the mixture and place them on a tray 4. Cook for 40 to 50 minutes at 110⁰C/Gas mark 1/4: The crème brûlée are cooked when they are set like a soft jelly

Sometimes I sit for hours and hours awaiting inspiration. My head is full of images and shards of animation. I need some kind of theme or plot, an idea that will spark The cogs and wheels inside my brain and get it to jumpstart! I know just how writers feel when facing that blank page, Or artists searching for something worth placing centre stage. There has to be a trigger, something that sets apart The reason for this one choice, whether written word or art. When, finally, you hit upon the hard sought resolution, Imagination flowers with that elusory solution! At last the gates swing open and the ideas start to flow, Words and pictures jostle to be first in the row. Once the block is cleared, creative thoughts come in to play, Inspiration surges forth and you are on your way! Frances Wraight North Walsham Times Issue 587 27th March 2020

Notice from the Editor - Coronavirus and Magazine Deliveries

While we are continuing to deliver through letterboxes for the moment, it is possible that we will be advised not to do so in the future if we are advised that this will be detrimental to the well-being of our team of distributors or the households we deliver to. If such is the case we will make alternative arrangements at pick-up points as are available at the time. For those with good internet access, the magazines will be on line as usual at www.rosevillapublications.co.uk. As everyone is aware, at risk people (over 70s and those with underlying conditions) have been advised to minimize contact. To help reduce the possibility of contamination and to discourage people from making extra contact, the drop point for leaving free ads or letters or articles for the magazines will no longer be used until the crisis passes.

A large number of events have been cancelled or postponed in our area already and we will continue to put updates into the magazines as best we can. Hopefully when the worst is over, we will be able to let you know revised dates for those that can be rescheduled. Items that cannot be emailed can be posted to Margaret White at Pond Cottage, Pit Street, Southrepps NR11 8UX for North Walsham Times, Cromer Times or Sheringham Independent or for the Holt Chronicle to Jo Haywood at 11 Cliff Road, Sheringham NR26 8BJ. We will limit our visits outside to the bare minimum as advised. We hope you stay safe during this difficult time, but if there is anything we can help with, please call us. Eric, Jo, Pete, Isaac, Margaret

Coronavirus Crisis Help

North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme

Salvation Army - Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic the

North Walsham Good Neighbours is working closely with North Walsham Town Council to provide support and information to the local community during the current crisis. Current Government advice means that many people will be isolated in their homes and normal activities such as shopping and collecting prescriptions will need to be done by others. Social isolation will also lead to increasing loneliness. The Council has asked Good Neighbours to be a contact point for people who need help and support in the town, and also for individuals, organisation and businesses who are offering help through volunteering, delivering food orders etc. People who do not have family, friends, or carers to call on will be prioritised. Volunteers will carry out essential practical tasks like shopping, collecting medication or dog walking. They will not undertake any task that requires them to be in close proximity to others, to reduce any health risks. Good Neighbours’ volunteers will provide information about other sources of help and also ease feelings of loneliness by keeping in touch with isolated individuals by phone.

Music for Springtime Concert cancelled - The concert ‘Music for Springtime’ scheduled for 4 April in All Saints Church Upper Sheringham to raise funds for the bell appeal has been cancelled

Versus Arthritis - North Walsham Branch - Due to

current uncertain times the decision has been taken to temporarily suspend meetings of the Branch on 3rd Thursday of month and also the Self-Support Group on 2nd Monday of the month until further notice. We will make every endeavour to contact current members but apologise if we miss anyone. Please contact Stan or Carol on 01263 722778 for further information. We wish everyone well.

We are aware that the current world health situation is quite rightly causing a significant concern amongst our clients both in terms of their and their pet’s safety. These unprecedented times call for us all to work together for the good of our families, pets and communities. To this end we would like to reassure all our clients that we have already implemented contingency plans to help us to keep our patients, staff, clients and community safe and to help us ensure pets receive medication and care to the highest standard despite these challenges. These plans include waiting in the car for your appointment, a maximum of one person per pet entering the consultation room and use of hand sanitisers and gloves. Our plans also include use of telephone and video consultation where appropriate, medication postage and doorstep collection of medication. We also have plans in place for the veterinary care of patients whose owners are self-isolating. All these plans are already in place and are working well. Our staff have been split into groups who will not contact each other as we hope this will enable us to continue to offer our services, including our 24/7 emergency service, to our patients whilst minimising the risk to our staff and clients throughout this challenging period. We would urge all our clients to stay calm and heed government advice whilst also being reassured that we have contingency plans in place to care for your pets whilst keeping you and our staff as safe as possible despite the current challenges. We are committed to helping our local pet community as much as possible so if you have concerns please give us a call on 01692 407126 and we will help to the best of our abilities using all the means at our disposal.

if anyone needs help call 01692 558321 and leave a message.

If you can help as a volunteer or if your organisation or business can offer relevant help, please contact us on volunteer@nwgoodneighbour.org.uk

RNLI's response to Coronavirus situation

- rnLi nigel Millard 'The welfare of our volunteers, supporters and staff along with our ability to maintain our world-class lifesaving service is our priority. With this in mind, and given the current situation with COVID-19, we have taken the decision to close all RNLI shops, museums and visitor centres with immediate effect. Our lifeboat stations remain operational and we will continue to respond to those in need but will not be open to visitors. Our lifeboats will continue to launch to those in peril at sea.' For more information please contact the RNLI Press Office on 01202 336789 or via pressoffice@rnli.org.uk

Crane Fruehauf Reunion Postponed - Due to unforeseen circumstances of which I am sure you all aware we are having to postpone this year’s reunion on 3 April. I would like to think we would be able to meet again at the end of October beginning of November. Please feel free to contact me with any comments you may have regarding this proposal. Patrick Pipe

Dementia - What steps can we take to safeguard our loved ones? What can we do to help a family member or close friend following a diagnosis of dementia? It is important to remember that if an individual loses, or starts to lose mental capacity a spouse, next of kin, or family member is not automatically appointed to legally deal with their affairs.

the additional work involved, the process of applying to be a person's Deputy is invariably going to be more costly than if the person had made a Lasting Power of Attorney. However, if the person has reached the point where they can no longer make decisions on their own, and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, there is little choice other than to go down this route. e aim to deal with such applications as quickly and cost efficiently as possible. We also ensure we make applicants aware of the projected timescales, and possible delays with the Court system, from the outset.

Lasting Powers of attorney

If an individual is diagnosed with dementia, or other condition that means they are likely to require help and support in the future, they should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This would allow the individual to appoint specific people they trust implicitly to help them, legally, manage their affairs. This can help safeguard against the person falling victim to financial abuse. Taking advice from a legal profession is essential here to ensure that the person fully understands the powers they are giving to their attorney and also considers who would be best in the role. We hel individuals to explore whether a particular family member or friend is suitable. However, if the individual has not taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney or is at the point where they no longer have sufficient mental capacity, the Court can appoint someone to act on the person's behalf as a Deputy.

summary

If you are aware that a family member or friend has been diagnosed with dementia we recommend you encourage them to seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure they get their affairs

in order and make a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Deputyship

If you are caring for an individual who has been diagnosed with dementia but they do not have sufficient understanding to make a Lasting Power of Attorney you may apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. This enables a person who is appointed as Deputy by the court to make decisions on behalf of the person living with dementia in circumstances when the person is unable to make those decisions themselves. You can apply to be a person's Deputy if you are aged 18 or over. Such applicants tend to be close friends, relatives or legal professionals. The Court can appoint two or more Deputies for one person, if appropriate. The Court monitors the Deputy appointed and reviews annual accounts to ensure that the person's affairs are managed correctly. This helps to protect the person living with dementia, or other condition which may affect their mental capacity. The process of applying to become a person's Deputy can take much longer than if the person had taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney while they were still able to. This is because the person is no longer able to willingly appoint those they trust to act on their behalf. Therefore, the Court requires much more information to be able to make a decision that would be in that person's best interests. Due to the nature of the application, and

Deal provides 94.5% renewable energy for some facilities

North Norfolk District Council is delighted to announce it has struck a new energy contract, which is set to reduce the carbon emissions of some of its facilities by 85%.

The switch is the latest effort in the Council’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030, alongside other schemes such as Electric Vehicle Chargepoint installation across the district, and solar panels along the main office building.

The Museum of the Broads is delaying its opening for 2020 for an indefinite period to keep visitors, staff and volunteers safe.

Vertas (a subsidiary of Suffolk County Council) undertook the procurement on NNDC’s behalf, with the award criteria based on pricing, renewable credentials, EDI billing (a form of electronic billing) and a single point contact for billing. The contract was subsequently awarded to Haven Power, who are able to supply the Council with 94.5% green energy with REGO (Renewable Energy Guaranteed Origin) Certificates. The contract runs for a period of 2 years from April 2020.

The Poor’s Staithe, Stalham, NR12 9DA, 01692 581681 www.museumofthebroads.org.uk , Twitter or Facebook @MuseumBroads

Cllr Nigel Lloyd, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said “I am delighted that we have been able to secure a green energy supply at a competitive rate for our offices. NNDC have begun our journey to net carbon zero, we will continue to explore all avenues to reach that goal by 2030.”

Pavilion Theatre shows postponed

North Norfolk District Council can confirm shows due to take place at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier have been postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Working closely with Openwide Coastal Ltd, the external contractors who manage the theatre, the decision to has been taken in the interest of public health not to hold any of the scheduled shows or events at the Pavilion Theatre until 20th June 2020. This decision is taken in the light of the latest advice from Government on managing large gatherings, as the nation works to combat the spread of the virus. The Council will continue to work closely with the operator of the popular venue to secure its sustainability beyond this crisis. We will continue to monitor Government advice and remain in constant dialogue with Openwide about the theatre. Openwide Coastal Ltd. Has put out the following message to its loyal customers: “As of 2pm today Openwide Coastal Ltd. have taken the decision to reschedule all planned performances up to and including Friday 19th June. In addition the Vintage Sixties Festival, Folk on the Pier and Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society will be postponed until 2021. We will begin the process of contacting all affected customers starting from 9am on the 19th March. This will take some time to work through, so please be patient with us and our team whilst we work to contact everybody. In the meantime thank you from us all for your continued support and understanding. I hope that we will see you all again soon, in the meantime we hope that you and your families stay safe and stay positive.”

?Cancelled?

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We were delighted to see Benji and sister Brexit leave for their new home this week. Benji is a nice friendly boy; however, his sister is very timid and will need time to settle and accept contact from her new owner. He is following our suggestions and keeping them in one room to begin with, and gradually allowing them access to the rest of their new home. We know their new owner will give them all the time they need to settle and adapt to their new surroundings.

Recent arrivals have included 5 more black cats, all related, 4 females and 1 little kitten. Matty, the kitten has already left for his new home, while Moya and Mora, two 11-month-old sisters that are very playful, already have people coming to see them. The older two, Magic (who does like to sit on your lap) and Misty are quieter cats who would probably be better with older families.

We have previously mentioned the problems people experience when purchasing their new pets online, as so many people have contacted us after doing so. We have been advised that cats are being advertised at higher prices because of their colour or having one parent that is a pedigree, while some, although advertised as having been treated for fleas and worms, obviously have not and others have had serious health problems requiring veterinary treatment. A recent radio programme (although relating to a puppy) highlighted another way people can be cheated. In this instance the advert indicated that a deposit of £60 was needed to secure the puppy and this had been paid. However, when the family tried to make contact to arrange

collection, the telephone number was no longer available and they had no other means of contacting the sellers. We therefore advise people not to pay a deposit for any kittens advertised unless they have been to see the kitten and also its mother. Please also be aware that changes in the law require that any third parties selling Maddie, little shy when she first meets you pets must have a licence to do but very playful, Izzie's sister so (e.g. pet stores).

As the footfall in town has been affected by the recent road closures, we have decided not to hold our usual sale in the St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham in May. We will review the situation once roadworks are completed depending on the situation regarding Covid 19. Despite the upheaval we are very grateful to all the people who continue to fill the ‘Cat Box’ in Sainsburys every week. Thank you all very much at least the cats will not go hungry!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

On Friday 13 March I went to a bowling match and came home with little Chris! He was found out during the day at Stalham. At only 250grms he must have been struggling for a long time seeking food just to keep himself alive. Since getting warm he is eating well so hopefully it will not be many weeks before he gets up to weight and can be released back into the wild. Please note that the fundraising Bingo due to take place on 4 April has been postponed until later in the year.

North Walsham Times Issue 587 27th March 2020

Subsequent radiographs demonstrated the pellet had not entered her spine and as she was not showing any signs of spinal damage we elected to try and find the pellet surgically. This was tricky surgery due to its position and the amount of musculature that had to be dissected in order to reach this very deeply positioned part of the spine.

Our case this month is Lucy, a beautiful domestic long-haired cat of only 5 years of age. Sadly her reason for being brought to us is very disturbing and something we never wish to see. Lucy’s owner had noticed blood coming from Lucy’s shoulder and found a single small wound. One of the owner’s other cats was treated last year having been shot with an air rifle and she was suspicious that the same thing had happened to Lucy.

Lucy was quite distressed and very painful and her radiographs showed an air rifle pellet lodged adjacent to her vertebrae. Although she probably didn’t feel so, Lucy had been very fortunate as it appears she had been shot head on with the pellet narrowly missing her head and eye, which would likely have been fatal. Instead, it had entered at the level of her shoulder and travelled around four inches through her body before hitting her vertebrae and lodging just above her spine.

When the pellet was found it was removed along with the large clump of fur, (seen in the photo), which had been dragged through her body from the skin of her shoulder.

Lucy continues to make a remarkable recovery and we sincerely hope that the police are successful in their investigations and that we do not see any further such cases. Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

From Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk - February Dear all,

In February, I started my regular surgeries for residents across the constituency. I’m delighted already to have helped so many people with concerns and issues – please do contact me if you would like to see me at a future surgery.

In Parliament, I’ve been proud to speak up for our farmers, who are so important to our area, providing not only our food but much employment.

the government to look at the Norwich & Norwich A&E unit. It suffers hugely with capacity issues, so we are working on a solution which will benefit everyone and get our ambulances back into North Norfolk faster. In conjunction with multiple partners, I’m in discussions to improve and bring extra facilities to Cromer Hospital. Although at an early stage, this would be a fantastic step forward, if we can treat more people locally and save more residents from having to make the long journey to Norwich. Locally, I am delighted that – after a campaign and petition I ran last year – North Walsham is finally set to have a new Wetherspoon’s in town.

This was something many residents wanted and, alongside the town’s existing pubs and restaurants, will provide a real boost to the local economy and create jobs. More generally, I have spoken in Parliament about the importance of supporting our High Streets and market towns across the constituency. Surgeries: 25 April – High Kelling. 1 May – Cromer; 5 June – Stalham. Please contact me on 01692 557140 to make an appointment. Duncan Baker Member of Parliament for North Norfolk says surgeries may be cancelled due to the epidemic.

Volunteers, Volunteers Volunteers!!

I have continued to work on my project to improve ambulance response times by urging

Do you feel you could help support our staff care for our communities’ vulnerable people? This will ideally suit younger people over the age of 18. You will not be required to undertake any personal care or medication support. Instead we will ask you to ensure that our service users have enough food and fluids and perhaps make a hot drink and have a chat.

We ask this in advance of the staff losses to self-isolation and Covid-19 we anticipate. You will still have to be DBS checked and if there is any attached fee to this, it will be undertaken at our cost. You will also have to be briefed and abide by our internal CoronaYirus protocols.

If you feel you can help us and have time spare, you can help in a rewarding and supportive way our

World Book Day

Millfield Primary School in North Walsham celebrated World Book Day with an array of creative activities and events.

Let us help yyou… ou…

The day started off with an assembly discussing different genres and a chance to look at everyone’s costumes, including the teachers!

The children dressed in characters from their favourite stories, which encompassed classic stories, fairy tales, and comics. Then during the day each class had picked a book and designed a display around the theme. The corridors were adorned with ten display’s some of which were of Charlie and Chocolate Factory with their centre piece being Mr Wonka’s hat, a massive cooking pot took up most of a table for George’s Marvellous medicine, and brightly designed and decorated animals filled the entire table for Oi Frog.

Children from Rowan Class created scenes from War of the Worlds including the tripod aliens!

The children were excited to be working together and creating masterpieces for the whole school to enjoy. The displays were then judged and the 1st place rosette went to the very realistic Iron Giant display.

World Book Day

The children at Worstead Preschool enjoyed dressing up and reading about their favourite book characters on World Book day. There were lots of interesting characters this year, including characters from Cat in the Hat and Pirates Love Underpants.

If you would like to visit pre-school with a view to your child starting with us, you can contact Worstead Preschool on 01692 535692, or email worsteadpreschool@btconnect.com.

North Walsham Table Tennis League Decisive Double Determine Draws

North Walsham Cobra's Robert Gabriel, Mark Blackburn and Phil Stone hosted Backhander's Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner in the Premier Division with Wilson hitting a stunning defensive winner against Stone as he won the opener in straight before later also beating Blackburn in three. Warner took a brace but lost out to maximum man Gabriel, who dropped just the one set against Wilson. De Neve picked up a single with a 15-13, 11-13, 12-10, 11-5 win against Blackburn. Stone saved numerous set-points in the first as he won the final singles against De Neve 20-18, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6 before partnering Gabriel for a doubles win in five against Wilson and De Neve that saw the match end as a draw. On another busy night at the Sports Centre, North Walsham Alpha's Robin Thaxter, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Richard Westgate hosted Poacher's David Foster and Andy and Laura Marsh with Thaxter winning the opener against Foster 15-13 in the fourth before going on to take a maximum. Westgate picked up a brace with two wins in four before being edged out 13-11 in the third by Foster who also pulled out some great shots to beat Baldock-Yaxley in four. Both Andy and Laura Marsh picked up a single against Baldock-Yaxley with Laura recovering from two sets down. Thaxter and

Westgate took both of the opening sets of the doubles 11-3, before Foster and Laura Marsh hit back to take the next three 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 to see this match also end as a draw. On the middle table, North Walsham Beta's Stuart Hook, Ben Lester and Jack Morton (playing up) hosted Shark's Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson with Patterson winning the opener against Morton 20-22, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4. Hook came out the wrong side of two five-setters with the Hudsons – Matt winning 11-2, 11-13, 7-11, 13-11, 11-4 and Steve prevailed 16-14, 10-12, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8. Sharks went on to win the match 9-1 with Morton taking the point for the hosts with a 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, 4-11, 11-7 defeat of Steve Hudson. In the First Division, LCC Dolphin's David Grimes, Keegan Hammond and Andy Woods beat North Walsham Echoes Frank Weston, Joe Finnegan and Irving Watson 7-3. In the build up to two major WW2 anniversaries a councillor is seeking memories of home life and experiences in wartime North Norfolk

previously staffed by the men who were now at war, the formation of the land army to grow vital food supplies and the Home Guard patrolling our shores as Norfolk and the nation braced themselves for the very real possibility of invasion by the Axis powers.

Share your memories of North Norfolk in WW2

Memories of life on the Home Front in North Norfolk during World War Two are being sought ahead of the 75th anniversaries of VE (Victory in Europe) and VJ (Victory over Japan) days on Friday, 8 May and Monday, 10 August respectively.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when the Royal Air Force successfully defended our skies from relentless assault by the Luftwaffe.

North Norfolk District Councillor John Toye is heading the search for memories of life in our area as Britain fought in the conflict which raged in Europe and across the world between 1939 to 1945.

Life for the soldiers fighting in the Armed Forces changed forever – but life back in Norfolk changed dramatically too, with evacuees escaping the Blitz to live in homes in our area, women working in industries

If you have memories, pictures or anecdotes from life in North Norfolk during those unforgettable times, or if you are planning any events to commemorate the anniversaries of the Battle of Britain, VE Day or VJ Day, your council would like to hear from you.

Cllr. John Toye said “As Armed Forces champion working with the council’s Community Support Team, we are trying to gather information about what was going on in North Norfolk around the time of these events. Additionally, we are talking to all groups and organisations that are taking part in these celebrations to try and assist where we can and help others with their planning and finding sources of funding. “We would like to find out what went on in your towns/villages/parishes during the war while the men and women from the village

opener in five against Harrod. Yagi picked up a brace with two wins in straight before being beaten in five by Stoker. The remaining singles all went to the visitors with a conceded doubles concluding Delta's 8-2 match win. Finally the second round of the Handicap Singles Cup has been completed – a maximum from Henry Stoker helped Foxtrots to a 6-3 win against ASTA, while Alpha also progressed with a 7-2 win against LCC Dolphins, however Delta were beaten 6-0 by Gresham's School B.

were away. Who took over the doing of their work? Did the land army work on the farms, did you have buildings that provided billets for service personnel or used as convalescent homes, or for POWs? Were there boat owners that took part in the D-Day landings, was there land that was used as an airfield?

“We would like grassroots stories that have come from those who were left behind or passed it on to the next generation. Our aim is to put these on a map of the parishes in North Norfolk.”

How to share your memories with us: Send them via e-mail to supporting.communities@north-norfolk.gov.uk or post them to Sharon Garth, Supporting Communities, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer NR27 9EN.
