Young carol singers bring Christmas cheer to hospital Continued from front cover...
Friends chairman Keith Jarvis added “Christmas is not a nice time to be in hospital, but we hope the wonderful festive singing of the choir brings some homeliness and happiness to the patients.”
The Friends use public donations to provide extras to benefit patients, visitors and staff at the hospital.

Friends deliver festive gifts to hospital patients
Patients spending Christmas in hospital at North Walsham were given the tonic of extra gifts to unwrap – with a little help from their Friends.
Parcels of goodies were delivered to wards at North Walsham War Memorial Hospital on the weekend before the big day.
Bearing the gifts were members of the hospital’s League of Friends, who carry out the annual present-drop using funds generated by public donations.
The packages were presented to 27 patients as the hospital was fully occupied over the festive period.
Long-serving nurse Kerry Howarth said “It means a great deal to the patients, especially those whose families live far away and cannot visit. They are pleased to know someone is thinking of them and it has puts a smile on their face. Everyone is very grateful for what the Friends do.”
Life member of the Friends, Gifts galore: North Walsham War Memorial Janet Alden Hospital’s Friends meet with nursing staff from Honing, before handing out festive gifts. has seen the Photo: Richard Batson gift delivery from both sides of the bed – as a visiting gift-giver and as a patient back in 2003. She added “If you are feeling low it is a real boost when the unexpected gifts are handed out. And when you are delivering them you see patients perk up and really appreciate it.”
Friends’ Chairman Keith Jarvis said “We are delighted to use the public’s donations to put a smile on the faces of patients at this time of year with parcels of gifts. We also enjoy chatting to them on our rounds. They have some great stories to tell, and some – including one who was a former member of staff - have a real affinity with the hospital which we are proud to support.”

The Friends, who also organised a visit by carol singers over the festive period, presented hampers to the staff as well. The support group of volunteers provides extras all year round however, and are currently drawing up an action list of projects for 2018, including a new website to keep the community in touch with their work.
If you would like to help the Friends with donations or fund-raising please contact Mr Jarvis by email at k.jarvis155@btinternet.com, or call 07788 889853. North Walsham Times 534 January 20th 2018
Age UK Norfolk - Benefit Check Campaign
Many older people are entitled to claim benefits – but not everyone is aware of what their entitlements are, and how to claim. Age UK Norfolk is working hard to raise awareness so that those in later life, and their carers, can claim; and helping them along the way to make those claims.
The awareness campaign begins in January and the charity is aiming to ensure that the people concerned: ■ Will be better informed. ■ Know their rights. ■ Are claiming their entitlements. ■ Are fully informed about attendance allowance, pension credit, council tax benefit etc. ■ Get the help and assistance they need to claim those benefits.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
On Thursday 5 December the Community Centre opened its doors once again for our annual Christmas lunch.
There was roast turkey and all the trimmings as well as an extra surprise on the tables - the traditional Christmas cracker.
North Walsham Choir sang songs from Mary Poppins and of course there was our Grand Christmas Draw with many prizes.
The first prize was a Christmas hamper, second prize a bottle of whisky and third a bottle of champagne.
We had many other prizes donated and the Club would like to thank the following for their support, not only at Christmas but by giving their time to raise funds to help keep this Club going, year after year : North Walsham Rotary Club, North Walsham Lions, East Coast Plastics, Bluebell Public House, Cromer Pier Theatre, Three Cottages Fish and Chip Restaurant, Sainsbury’s PLC, Tesco PLC at Stalham and Sheringham, Roys of Wroxham, Morrisons of Cromer, Andy Grey Electrical and everyone who sold raffle tickets for us.
Special thanks goes to Mrs Cynthia Clare, who raised £950 by holding a Christmas Fayre at The Queen Elizabeth Hall on 9 December and finishing off in the evening with a Bingo session.
A very Happy New Year to you all.
North Walsham Times 534 January 20th 2018
Age UK Norfolk hopes to achieve this by offering: ■ Benefit entitlement checks. ■ Free and confidential advice about home safety, housing, care issues etc. ■ Providing this service in a place of a claimant’s choice, either in their own homes, at Age UK Norfolk’s premises, in a care home, or any other venue that is deemed suitable.
To find out more about benefit checks, call the Age UK Norfolk advice line on 0300 500 1217, Monday-Friday 10am-4pm.
ANOTHER RECORD YEAR
Once again the generosity of the residents of North Walsham and the surrounding area has enabled the local Poppy Appeal to achieve its best ever collection total. To date this stands at over £16,370.
As well as thanking the local residents and visitors for their generosity, I must express my gratitude to all the shops and businesses who hosted our collection tins, to the local schools who again raised an incredible amount this year and to a great team of helpers who, together with staff from Sainsbury and Waitrose, manned collection points in both stores for two weeks.
This fantastic total helps ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises.

Great Expectations, Great Result!
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham warmly welcomed Ofsted last November, with children from across the school eager to show how proud they are of their school.
The report received at the end of the inspection was as expected glowing and rated as ‘Good’.
The inspector writing to the Head Teacher said “you continue to lead the school exceptionally well and are ably supported by your deputy head teacher and leadership team. You have maintained Millfield’s highly inclusive ethos”. Pupils told the inspector “whoever comes here, we are ready to welcome you”.
The report went on to say that the team are highly ambitious for all pupils and determined to ensure that when they leave Millfield, they are well prepared for High School. The inspection also praised the very good behaviour of pupils saying that “teachers establish positive relationships with pupils and pupils told me that they enjoyed their lessons”.
Parents who responded to the Ofsted online questionnaire said that they would recommend the school to other parents and that their child is well looked after in school.
Another parent said “both my children find their education at Millfield engaging and the school gives them a fantastic range of opportunities over and above the regular lessons”.
Mrs Harazdiuk (Head Teacher) said “we are immensely pleased that the school has been recognised for all the great work it does and that Millfield has continued to provide its pupils with a standard of education that is at least good. We are ambitious for all our pupils and staff, with a determination to improve even further to give our children the outstanding provision they deserve”.

“They were invited to take a look at the tractors and to sit on one if they wished. We invited the tractor owners and their guests into the nursery for a mince pie and cheese straw as they warmed up ahead of their chilly ride home.
We feel that this event reflects the warm community spirit in North Walsham.

Tea Dance at North Walsham Community Centre on Monday 22 January 2pm to 4.30pm admission £2 including refreshments
Snowdrop Sunday on 4 February at Thorpe Market Church, NR11 8UA 12noon - 4pm - enjoy the snowdrops
Snow Drop Sundays
It will not be long before the snowdrops will be gracing our gardens, woodlands and wild places and giving us immense pleasure in the latter stages of winter, signalling the renewal of spring and warmer times to come.
Thorpe Market Churchyard in rural North Norfolk is now a mecca for visitors both local, national and international. In 2017 over the four weekends in February the snowdrops attracted over 1000 visitors, including a coach load of Dutch visitors, who came, saw and experienced the welcoming signs of spring and the
and sale of work by local artist Gillian Eustace. Original paintings, scenic cards, coasters and other crafts.
warm embrace of those who volunteer at the church to support the event, providing Thorpe Market’s famous spread of afternoon tea, coffee and cakes. The homemade cakes have been so much in demand that we produced our own collection of recipes for sale, all in aid of the church funds. And if you are lucky you may even have some live music to enjoy.
As with last year, this year the church will also host four local artists, each exhibiting their work so that returning visitors will see new work on the walls, all of which will be on sale.
To complement the offer, the owners of 'Love My
Refreshments available. Secondhand books. Supporting the Church Fund. Free admission and parking
Garden’, which is based at Groveland, in Roughton, are delighted to join us and will have a presence over the four weekends in the Churchyard, selling a selection of their plants. We are therefore looking forward to four sundrenched weekends on 4, 11, 18 & 25 February from 12noon until 4pm, having tea and cake amongst our beautiful native snowdrops and the more exotic arrivals. Do come and join us.
We recommend that large groups contact us before the event to give us fair warning of numbers and dates so that we can provide enough cakes. Please contact the Warden, Geoffrey Hunter at info@thorpemarket.org.uk , 07980695385.

Four exciting new pieces by Norfolk Composers, performed by the acclaimed London-based new music ensemble Ixion. Two of the four works are based on a chorus from Handel's ‘Messiah’, and two on a chorus from Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’. There will also be two short solo instrumental pieces by Andrew Toovey and Greg Rose, and a setting of William Blake by Sheringham-based Michael Finnissy. ‘Cantamus' is the only group representing Norfolk. The names of the (Norfolk) composers are Pat Hanchet, Colin Blundell, Martyn Craft,

and David Morgan.
Cantamus begun as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams, the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope.
CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) was founded in 1993 to enable musicians of all abilities to participate actively in contemporary music. Judith Weir [Master of the Queen’s Music] and Michael Finnissy were the first composers to be affiliated to the group, and Finnissy wrote their first-ever commission. CoMA has a national network of instrumental and vocal ensembles and an expanding international profile. Their unique music collection of hundreds of works contains some of the most exciting and rewarding new music being created today and is an invaluable resource for professional, amateur and youth based ensembles.

Share your stories of the coast
The Norfolk Coast Area celebrates 50 years as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this April.
The official designation as a protected area – given in 1968 – enables us to take action, as well as highlighting that the area belongs, in an important way, to us all. Natural systems are under threat from global warming and other factors, and there is much to be done to safeguard heritage. In this special year, we are looking back to celebrate – and forward to a healthy future for this beautiful place.
We would love to hear from anyone who has any memories of the coast, how life was, living and working in the area in 1968. If you have any stories, photos or videos of the area that you would be happy to share, please get in touch. Call 01328 850530 or email helen.timson@norfolk.gov.uk

North Walsham and District Historical Society
Talk on the Future Heritage Centre in North Walsham by Glyn Burrows There was no speaker in December so, following a committee meeting earlier in the evening, Chairman Glyn Burrows brought us up to date on the proposed Heritage Centre.
Glyn explained that suitable accommodation had been found and arranged by the Heritage Group.
It will be shared between North Walsham and District Historical Society and North Walsham Archive Group. It will be housed in The Saddlers in Vicarage Street, North Walsham and is planned to be open by Easter of this year.
It will have a Tea Room at the front, behind which will be an Information Centre, with the remaining space being a home for displays and artefacts storage for both organisations. He asked for volunteers from both to set up and man the Information Centre.
Glyn then went on to describe the different types of artefacts that will be needed to add to those already held, especially those with a definite North Walsham connection. They will need to be gifted, accepted and owned by either one of the organisations concerned and planned on the display shelves.
To emphasize the types of articles that are required, he explained they must have a connection with North Walsham.and proceeded to hold up a large variety of small items including a sickle and some small attractive china souvenirs which, because they did not show any connection with North Walsham, were unacceptable. He did the same with a silver sports presentation cup and a box of thimbles, but a photograph of a young woman whose parents had lived in the town was quite acceptable.
He further explained that if anybody has any suitable photographs, these would be scanned and the originals returned to the donor if wished. A few people in the audience said that they possessed suitable artefacts, which they would gladly donate. Mike Sothcott

Gardening Introspection in January By Matt Carlton of Norfolk Landscape Gardeners I like starting projects in January. That's the best time to start something. It's so inward. (Carolyn Chute)
Let’s be inward for this month. I want you to be introspective and thoughtful. I want you to look out of your windows and think of nicer things. Now is the time to spend contemplating the coming year and how you want your outside space to reflect who you are.
We love our homes to say something about who we are, we love to show people our collections, decorations, furniture and décor as they are eloquent translators of ourselves, saying “this is me and this is who I am” to those who visit.
We share our musical tastes for the same reason, we are unstinting in our praise for that film which touched us deeply and which we long to share with someone, we wax lyrical about a new restaurant which sent our taste

buds into a frenzy of delight. All these things speak of who we are.
Would you not want the same from your garden?
Are you a staunch traditionalist, do you love your rose beds and cottage garden planting, the sounds of birds and bees, the smell of the flowers, the quintessential “Englishness”?
Or do the shapes and colours of the oriental garden appeal to you?
Maybe you would love to recreate the Mediterranean in your garden and sit at a table under a pergola, warmed by the sun, refreshed by Chinanti, with a plate of olives and feta at your elbow?
The summer may seem a long way off, but already, in the exposed soils in your garden are soaking up the rainfall, microorganisms within the soil are breaking down the fallen leaves and autumnal detritus to convert it into useable and accessible energy for the new growth to come. Earthworms tunnel through the soil, aerating it and improving texture and structure in
readiness for the coming season.
Let us take nature as our guide and be similarly proactive.
So, for this months “homework” I would like you to imagine how you would like your garden to make you feel. Ignore the technical, ignore the price, ignore the “how” and concentrate on the feeling. It is the job of a garden designer to work with you and make that feeling happen, so don’t get hung up on the details, just take an hour to look into your garden and let yourself imagine. Write down your thoughts, your ideas, your feelings. We’ll do the rest

Losing it?
Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
Assessing mental capacity is a science. It is time-specific and decision specific. In law “a person lacks mental capacity in relation to a matter if, at the material time, he is unable to make a decision for himself in relation to the matter because of an impairment of, or a disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain” (Mental Capacity Act 2005 “The Act”). Loss of mental capacity to make a decision can be partial, temporary or change over time.
There are specific, defined legal tests for the capacity to do the following: to make a Will, to make a gift, to litigate, to enter into a contract or a marriage. In most other matters it is the principles set out in The Act which must be used to determine capacity. Presumption of capacity is the first principle of The Act: a person is assumed to have capacity unless proved otherwise. The person claiming that another lacks capacity should be able to provide proof of that incapacity and the test is on the ‘balance of probabilities’ (the standard civil, as opposed to criminal, proof).
A person’s age, appearance, condition or
behaviour does not by itself establish a lack of mental capacity. There are two stages to assessment of mental capacity: diagnostic and functional. Examples of an impairment or disturbance which can be diagnosed include dementia, significant learning disabilities, conditions relating to mental illness, concussion, delirium and symptoms of alcohol and drug use.
The functional assessment establishes lack of capacity to understand information, retain it in the mind, use it in the decision-making process and then to communicate the decision. All practicable steps to help that decision-making should be taken. Supported decision-making involves providing relevant information which can be done in a number of different ways. It is important to communicate appropriately and to make the person feel at ease. Where someone has fluctuating capacity, aiding their memory and making the decision in parts and at the right time can all help. The third principle of the Act is that
someone should not be treated as incapable of making a decision because their decision may seem unwise. It is the quality of the decision-making rather than the reasonableness of the decision that matters. We all have different ways of looking at the world. This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. Early Bird tickets are now on sale for The Great British programme will be a fantastic celebration Prom at Blickling Hall of “those magnificent men in their flying
The Great British Prom is returning to Blickling on Saturday 11 August 2018 and it will be celebrating 100 years of the RAF. Once again, The National Symphony Orchestra will be leading the musical programme and organisers of the event, which has become an absolute favourite in Norfolk’s outdoor concert programme, are delighted to announce the return of a Spitfire to the evening. A limited number of Early Bird tickets are on sale now at a discounted price of £35 – so don’t miss out!
Formed towards the end of the First World War in 1918, the RAF is the oldest independent air force in the world and has a long-standing association with Norfolk. A vital part was played by the RAF and their support establishments during WWII and Norfolk’s serving men and women operated one of the most important front lines of defence. Today, Norfolk’s biggest base at Marham in West Norfolk is one of the RAF's largest and busiest, operating 4 Squadrons of Tornado GR4 aircraft in the attack and reconnaissance roles as well as other key RAF units.
As Lisa Ward says “There’s a huge, national respect for the RAF and Norfolk has played an
“We’re in your neighbourhood”
important part in its history. The 2018 event is going to be very special; not just because we’re celebrating the RAF centenary, but also because we will be seeing the return of a Spitfire to the programme which always delights the crowd. This time, it will be the Rolls-Royce Spitfire, flown by one of the Rolls Royce test pilots, (subject to CAA approvals). I can’t say any more at this stage but we’re hoping there will be even more, really exciting details to announce in early 2018 too!” The Supermarine Spitfire is one of the best-loved and widely recognised British aircraft of all time. The prototype Spitfire, K5054, first flew on 5 March 1936 powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin, the last of Sir Henry Royce’s engine concepts before his death. The Rolls-Royce Spitfire PS853, which will be appearing at Blickling, is an unarmed, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, one of a batch of 79 Mk XIXs built at Supermarine, Southampton. It has become widely recognised as an ambassador for Rolls-Royce appearing at air displays and charity events as well as at their corporate functions. Not only does it represent the heritage of the Spitfire and the Rolls-Royce engines that powered them, it honours the pilots of all nations who flew them and the men and women who built and maintained them. Norman Lamb quizzed on being an MP by Erpingham school children
Last month Norman Lamb MP met with Erpingham Primary School Class 3 pupils, who are currently studying Ancient Greece and democracy.
Help Needed
Mum of 3 in Aldborough (8 miles from Cromer) requires outgoing PA(s) for domestic support, the morning school run and shopping. 15.5 hpw, £8.50 p/h. Car owner/driver essential, job share welcome. For details: Job Reference 5418

They quizzed him on his role in Parliament and the job in general, which he described as ‘never boring’. When asked why he became an MP, Mr Lamb talked about being inspired by Nelson Mandela and the way he united people, and said he felt lucky to have a job that allows him to help others.
One student, Alfie, said “I have never seen an MP. He didn’t look like I expected. He told us lots of information we didn’t know, such as MPs argue in parliament and they can behave worse than children!”
Another, Ella, said “It was interesting to learn all that is involved in being an MP. I think it is important to obey the law so you don’t get arrested.”
Mr Lamb said “It was fantastic talking about democracy with Class Three - I hope to see some of them on the front benches in future years.”

Last Spring we reported how a group of small independent traders in North Walsham had got together to promote themselves and to raise awareness of the facilities available in the town.
Under the banner of ‘North Walsham Independent Shops’, two dozen of them produced a town map, filling a longstanding need for a free guide used by tourists and locals alike. Together they commissioned a print run of 6,000 maps and distributed these around the coastal information centres and other key locations.
These proved to be extremely popular and anecdotally helped improve footfall. As a result of this year’s success, the group has grown, with 30 or more shops expected to feature in next year’s larger and more information filled map and associated promotions.
This Christmas has seen a seasonal campaign on social media and as a result of their mutual collaboration they have an ever growing following that will give them the opportunity to target their advertising to their local community.
The group have proved that self-help can indeed bring positive results. It’s an idea that many towns could usefully copy.

1,300 ambulance delays outside A&E in Norfolk this winter
Almost 1,300 patients at hospitals in Norfolk have faced waits of half-an-hour of more in ambulances outside A&E so far this winter, Liberal Democrat analysis has revealed. Of these, almost 381 waits of an hour or more.
In the week to 31 December, 439 patients faced waits of over half an hour, 165 of them for at least an hour.
Analysis also shows that several hospitals are suffering from dangerously high bed occupancy rates.
Norfolk and Norwich hospital trust was 100% full on two days in the week to 31 December. Meanwhile the James Paget University Hospitals Trust has been 100% full for 28 of 42 days so far this winter. 20
Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk Norman Lamb commented “These figures show the NHS crisis in Norfolk is worsening. Thousands of patients have been left stuck in ambulances outside A&Es while several hospitals are suffering from a severe lack of beds. Every day seems to bring yet more bad news about the state of the health service.
The blame for this lies firmly at the government’s door. Ministers refused to provide the funding that top NHS officials said was necessary and now patients are paying the price. It’s time to give the NHS and care the extra cash they desperately need by putting a penny on income tax. We also desperately need a cross-party convention to look into how to fund the NHS and care in the long-term.” North Walsham Times 534 January 20th 2018

Coltishall Clinic facial rejuvenation approach: the natural look
There is no shortage of practitioners from a variety of backgrounds offering dermal fillers and Botox injections. The trouble is that a majority of these practitioners do not understand how the face ages and/or have a limited number of treatments to offer. Like in any other branch of medicine, correct diagnosis leads to correct treatment. We aim to make a diagnosis and then suggest treatments based on your unique needs. We need a balanced approach rather than too much of the wrong thing! Too tight 'wind tunnel' look facelift surgeries have fallen out of favour and we are in an era of over filling. What I call 'pillow faces'. Sadly, it is not only the patients, but practitioners are doing this to themselves too. Looking filled has almost become the norm! When Botox first came out it was the norm to see frozen expressionless faces. Patients are now moving away from too much Botox and requesting less of the stuff so they still have movement but look softer and well rested.
So what is our approach of facial rejuvenation at the Coltishall Clinic? Multiple changes occur as we age. By addressing all these, truly harmonious and natural looking results can be achieved. Our approach is to produce natural looking, pleasing and harmonious results.
What happens with facial ageing and how we can help? 1. Loss of skin quality, sun exposure and smoking related changes. Solution- skin care and rejuvenation treatments. You need a machine or laser that is suitable for your unique concerns. We are one of the very few clinics in the country who have invested in the full range of specialised dermatological lasers. Often a combination of lasers is required to produce best results. Dedicated Medical Lasers are advanced tools and much better than cheap devices that have become widely available to non-medical personnel since deregulation of lasers.
2. Hyper dynamic wrinkles or in simpler terms wrinkles caused by over use or over activity of facial expression muscles. Some examples are frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet. Solution- judicious use of Botox injections to soften lines and wrinkles caused by muscle action.
3. Loss of volume - we lose bone, fat and muscle resulting in facial deflation and sagging of tissues. Solution- dermal fillers to restore lost volume and facelift to reposition sagging tissues and remove excess skin. Fillers have come a long way and today's fillers are natural, highly purified products, which are extremely unlikely to produce allergic reactions or other problems. One caveat is to stay away from permanent fillers. The only permanent filler I use is your own fat to restore the facial volume.
4. Sagging skin - gravity and reduction in skin quality can cause skin to stretch and sag. If you have not had the benefit of preventative treatments or there is significant skin excess, surgery is required. However, you do not need extensive surgery under general anaesthesia. By improving your skin quality and replacing lost volume you are less likely to need extensive surgery. Extensive surgery has fallen out of favour and less invasive surgery under local anaesthesia is in. This is what we like to offer. Extent of surgery is also tailored to your specific requirements.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Because most people are busy over Christmas and the New Year entertaining or visiting family and friends, we closed the ‘cat line’ for all enquiries.
Although the cats in care still receive the same amount of attention, this does allow our fosterers time to relax with their friends and families too. However, since the cat line re-opened, we have been very busy and have already re-homed 8 cats and the 3 kittens which recently came into care. Interest has also been shown for 2 more cats, including Nutsey, the lovely cat mentioned last time who was finally given a clean bill of health for his eye and allergy problems just before Christmas.
Of the 13 cats mentioned last time that came from one household, 12 have now gone to new homes. We had many enquiries for these lovely cats via the contact emails from the Cats’ Protection website but we do advise people that our preferred method of contact is via the cat line. Stephanie does not use a computer for cat work so if the enquiry is received by email we have to advise the person concerned they need to call her, as it could mean that someone who has telephoned may already be coming to see the cat they are interested in. Talking to people helps identify whether the cat in question would be suitable or not and allows Stephanie to identify what other cats would, as cats do not go on our website as soon as they come into care.
With so many cats recently leaving for their new homes, we will now be taking cats in from our waiting list, so it may be a little time before they start to be seen on the website. Before we put any cat up for adoption it will have been to the vets to ensure it is in good health and any health issues will have been resolved; it will have been neutered, (if not already done) vaccinated and micro chipped. The fosterer in whose care it is will also have advised Stephanie on how friendly the cat is and this, together with information from the previous owner (if there was one), helps us to

identify what sort of lifestyle will be suitable. Very occasionally, a cat will be returned to care because it does not adapt to its new home.
Kittens are not often featured on the website although we will indicate when there are some in care. As some come into care from outside situations, we need to be sure they are healthy and will survive, before finding new homes for them. Those coming in at a very young age, possibly needing to be bottle fed or with cat flu Faith or tummy upsets, are very vulnerable as they have not developed an immune system and are especially so if they come in without their mother. It is better to wait until they have been confirmed as fit and well before inviting people to come and see them. Sadly, we did lose three this year but found loving new homes for the rest.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Hedgehog Haven
Since my last article, two more hedgehogs have come into care for overwintering.
Reviewing 2017, starting on 28 January there were 77 admissions, 22 were released and 44 are still in care - 37 with me and the others being overwintered elsewhere.
check for any internal parasites.
Two of the smaller ones, although eating, are not gaining weight, so I have sent a faecal sample to Vale Wildlife Centre where, for a small fee, this will be examined under a microscope to
Depending on the results, I will then know which medication to administer.
Don't forget if the weather is mild, hedgehogs might emerge to seek some food and water before hibernating for a few more weeks so keep a lookout for them.

A luxury break for the cats of North Walsham and North Norfolk!
Toll Barn Vets Luxury Pet Hotel opened its doors at the end of 2017 and has already received some very happy guests! The Pet Hotel offers a brand new purpose built and fully licenced boarding cattery at the Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham. Toll Barn Vets has already been accredited as a Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice and all cats that stay at the Pet Hotel receive a free of charge health check by our qualified veterinary nurses prior to admission to ensure they are fit and healthy and ready for their holiday experience.
The Pet Hotel offers purpose built enclosures within a self contained fully heated and air conditioned cattery which is also equipped with its own ventilation system to ensure no unpleasant lingering aromas. The UPVc designed enclosures and medical grade flooring ensure hygiene and warmth for our guests, and the design ensures privacy so that neighbouring guests can’t see each other to avoid any stressful encounters.
Cat owners know that their cats like to exercise but also enjoy taking some time out for relaxation. To cater for this our enclosures have a large raised sleeping area, in addition to the exercise area which contains toys and activities to keep our guests entertained.
All our guests are cared for by Toll Barn Vets staff which means they have a fully qualified vet and nurse available to them 24/7 should they need it. This also enables us to provide any daily medication your cat requires and to monitor any health problems they may have, allowing you to have your own stress free holiday knowing that your cat is receiving the best possible care.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh Volunteers were call into action over the Christmas period when an eight year old spaniel was reported going into the sea and was subsequently taken out to sea.
The dog’s owner, Rachel Grey, called for help and Happisburgh’s D Class ‘Russell Pickering’ was launched with Jake Munday at the helm and Martin Gibbs as crew.
They picked up Rosie, the spaniel, 500 metres off the beach. She was returned to the beach to be reunited with owner, Rachel.
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
‘Russell Pickering’ was re-housed and made ready for service.
We would like dog owners whose dogs get swept out to sea to call the Coastguard and ask for the Lifeboat - we are happy to save a dog and rather than having to search for a missing owner.

Aylsham High makes waves fundraising for Blickling
Students from Aylsham High School have been working with National Trust staff at Blickling Estate to design an interactive model of their lake source heat pump, to entertain visitors, explain how it works and help raise funds for conservation work.
Aylsham High. “It was great fun to be involved. The students loved seeing behind the scenes at Blickling, how the lake source heat pump worked and then letting their creativity run wild with their designs.’
The lake at Blickling boasts the largest heat pump in the National Trust and heats the house and offices, reducing Blickling’s carbon emissions by 69 tonnes a year.
Sue Price, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience and Programming Officer said “With the pump up and running and now heating the house and West Wing, we felt we needed to talk about and celebrate the project with our visitors and we wanted to involve the local community in how we could do this.”
So, at the beginning of the year, a group of engineering and art and design students from Aylsham High were invited up to Blickling, with the task of creating a working model of the lake source heat pump that was also a donations box, to raise funds for Blickling’s ongoing conservation work.
Danny Sweatman is the Head of Nurture at 26
Once the students were happy with their design, they presented it to staff at Blickling and model maker, Paul Wells of Vernacular Miniatures, Cambridgeshire.
Paul was pleased to be involved with the project “The design that the students came up with was brilliantly entertaining and innovative and with a few changes to the materials needed and the shape of the model, I was able to turn their ideas into a reality.”
The model is finally in place for visitors to come and give it a go. With lights, sound and movement, you can see how the lake source heat pump works in a truly entertaining and interactive way.
The donations will help Blickling fundraise for its many ongoing conservation projects such as the Walled Garden restoration and the Library conservation project.
“Every penny helps take care of this special place and we are very grateful to the Aylsham High students for helping us raise funds in such a fun and creative way,” Sue revealed. She went on to say; “We’re thrilled with how the model has turned out and are looking forward to seeing our visitors enjoying it too”.
So next time you visit Blickling, why not bring a coin with you, pop it into the model and see what happens? Not only will you be helping to fund crucial conservation work you will find out about the lake source heat pump and you might be in for a few surprises too!

COAST Arts : PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS FREE Taster Session : Sunday 4 March
COAST Arts are pleased to be working with Jane Wells to bring creative percussion workshops to North Norfolk, with a free taster session in March followed by five focussed workshops around Easter. These sessions are for adults (16+) who like to make things up - perhaps in other art forms such as painting - and who will enjoy bringing a creative approach to playing with sound.
Starting points for ideas will include rhythmic patterns from various cultural traditions such as African, Latin American and American minimalism. Sessions are led by composer and community musician, Jane Wells, who has over 30 years’ experience of leading this kind of activity - in particular county-wide for Norfolk Music Works.
There is a FREE introductory session on Sunday 4 March 10.30am - 12midday in Cromer Community Hall. Then a series of five sessions on North Walsham Play received a pre-Christmas boost with a very Tuesday evenings around generous donation from North Walsham Town Council as part of the donation programme using the proceeds from the Sunday Farmers Markets.

A cheque totalling £420 was presented by Town Mayor Sallie Stuckey to Matthew Smith (Trustee) on Sunday December during the last Farmers Market before Christmas.
The donation is a result of 50% of pitch fees collected between April and September 2017.
The donation will be used to support the purchase of specialist play equipment for disabled children as part of the current fundraising project being spearheaded by North Walsham Play.
Matthew Smith thanked North Walsham Town Council and Nigel Clarke (Markets Manager) for deciding to support North Walsham Play.
He added “this very generous donation will very much help us on our way to our funding target. The money will be used to support the purchase of a DDA compliant wheelchair accessible roundabout planned for the new play park”.
Town Mayor Sallie Stuckey thanked North Walsham Play for their continued hard work in helping to improve the play parks within the town.
North Walsham Town Council are still looking for nominations and/or applications from other local groups under the category ‘disabled’ for the second award to be made in April or May next year. Bradfield Cricket Club – Rebuild News Update We want to say a huge thank everyone who has donated funds, or pledged work, and helped with fundraising events over the last year.
Incredibly, we have nearly raised all of the funds needed for our rebuilding of the pavilion, but we still have around £7,000 still to raise and our next fundraiser with the Co-op could go a long way to get us over the line. As it is closed season for cricket, we have already started the build part of the project, groundworks were completed last month. After the Christmas break, we will be moving onto the construction phase, with fundraising carrying on through the year to finish off the project. Of course, we’d be only too happy if anyone out there would like to donate funds or any other resources – please do contact Elaine
Addison on misselaineaddison@outlook.com
Amazing news is that we have got through to the Co-op fundraising project, which continues right through until October 2018. This is how it works - when Co-op members buy goods in store, part of this goes to local good causes – so the more members using the store and selecting our local good cause means we raise more money for the re-build project at Bradfield Cricket Club.
You can join up as a co-op member for just £1 at www.coop.co.uk/ membership and then select Bradfield Cricket Club as your local good cause. Participating stores are Aylsham and Cromer food stores and Duckers (Aylsham), Jackson & Starling (North Walsham) and Peter Taylor (Holt) funeral care.
Thanks again to everyone involved – you have all made an enormous difference!
Weather with Ned Nimbus
2017 was an average year overall with the usual variations you would expect from our climate. Globally the outcome has been the same, even the hurricane season promised a busy year but, as the past six years have been, somewhat quiet.
The past three months had a prominence of high pressure over or close to us and at times to the west of us, letting in cold northerly winds.
The next three months will again be a transient mix but with the chance of some longer drier spells but in line with our climate expectations.
Also, with daylight hours now increasing, February and March will not disappoint, with some spring like spells. But watch out for frosts as winds drop out under high pressure. Ned Nimbus, December 2017
Dance for Fun
The Dance for Fun children presented their annual Christmas Show at Worstead Village Hall on Saturday 2 December.
The show was an amazing night of singing, dancing and Christmas fun from 19 children aged 5 years upwards.
They then went on to perform in Cromer for the Senior Citizens Christmas concert & a care home in Barton Turf, where they sang and danced festive numbers to entertain.
Finishing off what has been a very successful year, the children performed in New Stages Christmas pantomime, Jack & the Beanstalk, at North Walsham's Pop Up People’s Theatre.

North Walsham Table Tennis Woods Fells Lester’s 100% Record
NWSCE’s Andrew Weston and Ben and James Lester hosted Barracuda’s Chris Marshall, Keith Register and Andy Woods. James Lester had won 24 consecutive matches in the First Division this season (including during a 7-3 win away at Gresham’s School B) but his perfect record came to an end at the hands of Woods who won their battle 16-18, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8. James Lester went on to take a brace but Barracudas won the match 8-2 including three wins in five – the doubles plus Ben Lester taking both Register and Woods the distance. NWSCC’s Frank Weston, John Chapman and Phil Mole hosted Crosscourt’s Rod Goffin, Steve Dams and Derek Sidaway (playing up). Goffin’s maximum concluded with a win in five against Mole and he was supported with a brace from Dams. Weston picked up a terrific 5-11, 11-6, 15-13, 11-5 win in the final singles against Dams and a five set doubles win saw NWSCC draw the match and they also beat LCC Crabs 8-2. NWSCD’s Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone won 8-2 away against Crosscourts before visiting Aylsham
Conqueror’s Robbie Ollman, Zach HomfrayDavies and Dave Johns. Hook took a maximum dropping just one set against Ollman.
Johns saved a match-point at 9-10 in the fourth before levelling at deuce five further times before Stone came through 17-15 on his seventh match-point chance. Porritt beat Ollman in five and Hook and Stone saved two set-points in the third as they won the doubles in straight against Ollman and HomfrayDavies. NWSCD won 9-1 with Johns preventing the whitewash in four against Porritt. The following week it was a fourth away match in as many weeks for NWSCD and the second at Aylsham, this time against Albion’s John Hall, Fletcher Dyson and Nash Panday (playing up) with Simon Porritt taking the place of Hook. Full houses for Stone and Richard Porritt saw the visitors to a 7-3 win with Stone taken the distance by both Dyson and Panday.
In the Premier Division, Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner hosted
Following a disappointing December with one victory and two defeats, the Vikings began 2018 with a tough assignment, league leaders Chingford visiting Scottow. After a wholehearted game, which was a fine advert for rugby at this level, the visitors headed home with a narrow 15 - 8 win. It was as close as the scoreline suggests, and the Vikings could be proud of their performance showing how much they have progressed since the 43 -15 defeat in September's away fixture. They remained fifth, ten points behind fourth placed Colchester who trail the leaders by fifteen.
