Another successful night for North Walsham and the fundraising efforts of North Walsham Play
On Saturday 20 January, a sell-out crowd at The Atrium, North Walsham, enjoyed an evening of comedy ventriloquism and live beat boxing.
Steve Hewlett and friends delivered a selection of new and wellloved routines which were well received by all. Live beat boxing was provided by the amazing Lee Gibling.
Matthew Smith, Trustee and Founder said that the evening had been a great success for all involved.
He added “it’s great to see the community get behind this event and the work that we as a charity are trying to achieve. Without the support of the local community I’m not sure we would be able to keep going”.
Included within the audience were a family that had travelled in excess of 3 hours to come and see Steve Hewlett. Steve has been supporting the young girl to learn the fundamentals of ventriloquism.

Another successful night for North Walsham and the fundraising efforts of North Walsham Play
Continued from front cover... All proceeds from the event are going towards North Walsham Play who are currently raising funds towards their £90,000 fundraising appeal which will see a new play park installed onto the Memorial Park in North Walsham, providing play equipment and opportunities for all young children regardless of need and/or ability.
A joint venture between North Walsham Play and North Walsham Town Council, along with funding from the North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund, saw the first of many new play parks installed back in May 2017.

Diabetes UK North Norfolk Group
Through the North Norfolk Group's fundraising activities last year we are again able to offer a limited number of FREE support holidays, organised by Diabetes UK, during the summer of 2018.
These will be available for children and young people with diabetes between the ages of 7-10 and 11-17 who live in Norfolk.
The holidays are invaluable for the youngsters, allowing them to gain skills and confidence to help them deal with their diabetes among others of the same age. Some go on holiday having never met anyone else with diabetes before. So to be able to leave thinking “I’m not different from anyone else” has to make it all worthwhile.
If your child is at all interested, please encourage him/her to contact Jackie or David on 01692 405492 or email diabetes.uk@hotmail.co.uk All contacts will be acknowledged on a first come first served basis. Whilst we are prepared to fund the holiday, you would be expected to organise travel and provide pocket money.
Details of the holidays for 2018 will be available shortly.

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust
Book your mini canal cruise!
Dozens of adventurers have already enjoyed seeing a restored Norfolk attraction from an unusual viewpoint - and the call has gone out for others to share the experience.
Sue B sets off from Ebridge Mill pond up to Bacton Wood and back again, a journey lasting an hour.
En route the trust's crew point out wildlife including swans, little grebe, marsh harriers, and little egret, and explain how the canal was built and works.
North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust has ferried some 50 boat passengers along a stretch of the 19thcentury waterway since launching pleasure trips in December and the mini cruises are continuing into the new year.
Everyone is welcome and Graham Pressman, the trust's boating officer, said a trip Photo: Graham Pressman would be especially useful for anyone interested in helping to restore the canal. Each Sunday afternoon at 2pm the pontoon "Restoring and maintaining this canal is

a momentous project. Be part of it and leave a legacy which will last for generations. We are restoring past history and making future history now," he added.
Trip tickets cost £5 per passenger and hot drinks (£2) are for sale on board. Trippers are strongly advised to wrap up warmly. To book, ring Graham on 07585 160772.

Homeowners warned over replacement-boilers scam
North Norfolk District Council sounds alert following reports that residents have been approached Residents are being warned of another scam, with rogue traders attempting to persuade them to sign up for ‘free’ boiler replacements. North Norfolk District Council has been contacted by homeowners who have been approached with the offer of free LPG boilers to replace their existing oil boilers. People are being told that the government or NNDC is funding the scheme, but in reality no such programme exists. Residents in Ludham and Bacton are among those who have been approached.
Giving these people access to your home is risky in itself. And because there is no such boiler-replacement scheme, homeowners who agree to this work are likely to find out subsequently that there is going to be a bill after all – but only once the existing boiler has been removed and the pressure to get the work completed has increased. Even if the job is ultimately completed, businesses that operate in this way are unlikely to have the correct accreditation or offer adequate guarantees for their work.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “Unfortunately, there are always going to be unscrupulous people who try to prey on the vulnerable or those who are unsure of the law. There is no scheme offering free replacement boilers, and North Norfolk residents should not allow con artists to persuade them otherwise.”
The issue has also been flagged up by Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards department, which recently sent an email update to people registered with its scam-alert system.
The alert said “The cold-callers are stating they need a range of personal and financial information to ‘check if you are eligible’ for the scheme.
In previous incidents, these types of cold-callers have made claims about ‘government’ or ‘local council backing’ for the alleged scheme and have photographed documents and paperwork if offered on mobile phones.”
It added that people approached in this way should not give or confirm any personal or financial information but should report the North Walsham Times 535 February 2018

Quartet’s fun quest for the magical music bow
A musical quartet with a surprising number of strings to their bows are bring their unique show to north Norfolk – where one of them has a family home.
Bowjangles are marking 10 years of combining music with singing, dancing, juggling, tumbling, comedy and cabaret.
Their latest show, The Legend of Excalibow, features music from many genres, as the team seeks a magical violin bow known as Excalibow, on a journey through fairytales, folklore, monsters, ancient gods, historical and fantasy figures. And for violinist Bertie Anderson it will be a special homecoming to north Norfolk. She is the daughter of former ITV Anglia producer and Bygones presenter Eddie Anderson, who hosts classical music events at his Templewood home in Northrepps.
Cellist Ezme Gaze said “We do leap around a lot
during our show, and when we play at Sheringham Bertie will be seven months pregnant – but still taking a full part.
“This show has more of a story narrative than our previous ones, is very physical and involves the most complicated music we have ever done – including some Shostakovich and Elgar’s Cello Concerto.”
Bowjangles were formed a decade ago in February 2008 with the aim of choreograph music with dance to create a visually exciting show. The quartet has travelled the world performing in theatres and halls, arts festivals and street festivals, in schools, hospitals, cabaret, the occasional prison and even in a forest in the dead of night. They have appeared at the Cromer COAST festival in the past. Shows have included the sports themed Bowlympics in 2012 and a morning TV show

based On The Box, which featured cookery, soap opera, news, weather and Strictly style dance competition, including a visit to the Little Theatre in 2015.
Original members Ezme and Bertie – who have been playing music together since they were 16 year olds at the Purcell music school - and Mitch McGugan, have now been joined by newcomer Oliver Izod, who is an “actor who can play violin.” Bowjangles’ The Legend of Excalibow is at Sheringham Little Theatre on Saturday 10 February at 7.30pm.

Dementia - What steps can we take to safeguard our loved ones?
What can we do to help a family member or close friend following a diagnosis of dementia? It is important to remember that if an individual loses, or starts to lose mental capacity a spouse, next of kin, or family member is not automatically appointed to legally deal with their affairs.
Lasting Powers of Attorney If an individual is diagnosed with dementia, or other condition that means they are likely to require help and support in the future, they should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This would allow the individual to appoint specific people they trust implicitly to help them, legally, manage their affairs. This can help safeguard against the person falling victim to financial abuse.
Taking advice from a legal profession is essential here to ensure that the person fully understands the powers they are giving to their attorney and also considers who would be best in the role. We help individuals to explore whether a particular family member or friend is suitable. However, if the individual has not taken steps to make a Lasting Power or Attorney or is at the point where they no longer have sufficient mental capacity, the Court can appoint someone to act on the person's behalf as a Deputy.
Deputyship If you are caring for an individual who has been diagnosed with dementia but they do not have sufficient understanding to make a Lasting Power of Attorney you may apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. This enables a person who is appointed as Deputy by the court to make decisions on behalf of the person living with dementia in circumstances when the person is unable to make those decisions themselves.
You can apply to be a person's Deputy if you are aged 18 or over. Such applicants tend to be close friends, relatives or legal professionals. The Court can appoint two or more Deputies for one person, if appropriate.
The process of applying to become a person's Deputy can take much longer than if the person had taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney while they were still able to. This is because the person is no longer able to willingly appoint those they trust to act on their behalf. Therefore, the Court requires much more information to be able to make a decision that would be in that person's best interests.
Due to the nature of the application, and the additional work involved, the process of applying to be a person's Deputy is invariably going to be more costly than if the person had made a Lasting Power of Attorney. However, if the person has reached the point where they
can no longer make decisions on their own, and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, there is little choice other than to go down this route. We aim to deal with such applications as quickly and cost efficiently as possible. We also ensure we make applicants aware of the projected timescales, and possible delays with the Court system, from the outset.
Summary If you are aware that a family member or friend has been diagnosed with dementia we recommend you encourage them to seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure they get their affairs in order and make a Lasting Power of Attorney. Although this can seem like a daunting task, the help and advice from a skilled lawyer will ensure that process runs smoothly and effectively.
If, however, making a Lasting Power of Attorney is not possible, we suggest a Deputyship application is considered. Our team of trained experts are here to help guide you through this process.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Wills, Trusts and Probate solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact Jennifer Nash for appointments at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham on 01263 823398.

IT’S PANTO TIME AT MUNDESLEY AGAIN FOLKS - OH YES IT IS!
Mundesley pantomime this year is ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, directed by Ian Cashmore, produced by Pat Nearney, celebrating the 45th consecutive annual pantomime held for the village. “This year even more fun and laughter is guaranteed”, said Mr. Nearney.
After expenses, all proceeds are distributed to local charities, with last year’s profits amounting to over £4000.
As in the past, the pantomime likes to give ‘up and coming actors’ a chance to appear with this year being no exception. Fifteen year old Georgia Pearce finally gets to take a principal role, of Snow White. She is a pupil at Cromer Academy and has appeared in many pantos, as well as productions by the Academy and Mundesley Players.
In contrast, Sheilah Photo: Maurice Gray Olley, panto favourite ‘The Norfolk Fairy’, who, following last year’s ‘pantomime referendum’ was voted to remain as ‘The Norfolk Fairy’, making her 20th consecutive appearance in the part.
With the stunning scenery, designed and painted by Nigel and Brenda Holmes, accompanied with sound and lighting by David Castle and Joe Coleman, production values are higher than ever before and with a cast of around 40, rehearsals are progressing very well.

Hickling Broad & later Stubb Mill for Winter Raptor Roost on 18 February 12:30pm – 5pm - this event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders. We will first look for winter species, particularly wildfowl and waders, at Hickling Broad (a walk of perhaps an hour around the reserve reed-bed) and then walk to Stubb Mill to watch the winter raptor & crane roost. This is a lunchtime and afternoon trip. We will meet at the Hickling NWT car-park NR12 0BW at 12.30 for an initial al fresco lunch (bring your own!). The grid reference is TG 428 222. The NWT Visitor Centre has picnic tables and toilets. Currently their web site does not indicate any opening hours for the cafe. The afternoon raptor-watch is at Stubb Mill, which is reached with a moderate walk from the NWT car-park. Stout footwear or wellies are essential as some areas are wet underfoot. Warm windproof clothing is also essential because the raptor watch involves standing in the open, possibly for a couple of hours, which can be cold, but its also rewarding with the possibility of seeing Common Cranes, Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlin, Buzzards, Short -eared and Barn Owls coming in to roost. As the raptors can be distant a telescope is useful if you have one. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Janice Darch.
Conjuring up magic from another era
A dapper duo dealing in Victorian-style magic are bringing their show to Sheringham and the 21st century.
Morgan & West, Time-Travelling Magicians have conjuring and comedy up their sleeves in a show that gets the audience involved as well as intrigued, amazed and baffled.
The prestidigitatory pair met while studying at Oxford in the late nineteenth century, but, thanks to a prototype time machine, have arrived in the modern day armed with a hatful of trickery and mindreading.
Morgan & West have been performing magic shows all over the UK and at festivals all over the world since 2009. They have appeared at Wilton’s Music Hall in London, ‘fooled’ Penn & Teller on ITV’s Penn & Teller: Fool Us challenge show, and entertained dignitaries including Prince Charles.

Scheme was one of just seven organisations across Norfolk honoured with the County Council’s ‘In Good Company’ Quality Mark Plus awards, recognising its work above and beyond the scope of its original remit of providing one-off practical help with every-day essential tasks. These include lifts to the doctor or shops, visiting a relative in hospital, clearing an overgrown garden, filling in a difficult form, walking a dog or changing a light bulb - but the Scheme has expanded to offer befriending services, supporting vulnerable residents in a community which has a high proportion of older people living on their own.
Scheme chairman Peter Tobitt said “As a result of North Walsham Town Council inviting us to have a stall at the Christmas Lights switchon in December, we were able to further increase our profile and we had expressions of interest from six new volunteers, three of whom are already trained and ready to go out and help our neighbours.
“Last winter, in addition to its existing work in helping our neighbours in the community, we Peter Tobitt receiving the Charter Mark Plus award from took an active part in Wendy Thompson, Managing Director and Cllr John Ward, the “Staying Well This Chairman, Norfolk County Council` Winter campaign, (Photo: Norfolk County Council) working alongside other groups who engage with vulnerable people, such as GPs’ surgeries and dementia and carers’ groups.

“Similarly, this winter we have helped an increasing number of neighbours who are alone and we are increasing the number of befriending rotas as we recruit more volunteers able to do this most rewarding of tasks added Peter.
“We aim to help build community spirit and a sense of belonging, which is so important for all of us, and especially for those living alone.
North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme is managed and delivered by a team of committed volunteers and has so far completed almost 700 tasks helping local residents. There are now thirty trained volunteers involved but extra help is always welcome, even more so during the winter months when older residents especially are at their most vulnerable, and as the on-going good work expands.

New Year, new smile!
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that our four legged friends suffer dental problems just like we do, but it remains one of the biggest problems in our pet’s health.
Cats and dogs rarely have the freshest of breath, however bad breath could be a sign of more serious problems.
Gum disease is one of the most common problems we encounter in domestic animals, and although it takes a lot to stop them eating, many of our pets live with a degree of oral discomfort without us realising. If left untreated it can commonly lead to pain and mouth infections, but in more serious cases dental disease can lead to weight loss, liver, kidney and heart disease. We see on average 4-5 dental or oral infections every month that 14
could have been avoided with treatment at an earlier stage.
There is much we can do at home to improve our pets dental hygiene and keep teeth as clean as possible for as long as possible. Regular brushing, a couple of times a week, is probably the best method, but ensure you use a dog or cat specific toothpaste as they cannot tolerate the fluoride in human toothpaste. Alternatively, encouraging chewing with safe dental aids such as kongs or antler chews will help with the physical removal of tartar and plaque. Unfortunately,
once plaque and gingivitis levels reach a certain stage then scaling and polishing, with tooth extractions as necessary, are the only way to maintain good oral health.
To try to reduce dental problems in our patients, we are running a dental campaign through the months of January, February and March where we are discounting all dental procedures and products. If your pet has any dental problems or you would just like a bit more information give your local vet a call and arrange an appointment, you could be saving your loved one a lot of tooth ache!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last time, we were happy to report that lots of our cats had found new homes and we would therefore be taking cats in from our waiting list. Fortunately, for several of these cats, they no longer needed our help, which was fortuitous, as we were contacted about another situation where a further 13 cats, (must be our lucky number), needed to come into care because they had been abandoned when their owner was evicted. Ten of these are now in care and have taken up all our free spaces. The remaining three are being looked after by someone in her home and she is happy to do this until we have more free spaces. We were already aware from concerned neighbours that the living conditions for these cats were not ideal but had not been able to take any action as we do not have the powers to do so. Sometimes, when people ring the cat phone, they are under the impression that we have an office with someone there to answer cat enquiries and are most surprised to learn that this is not the case.
When Stephanie is on holiday I do take the phone over and I have received calls in the evening, (they come through on my home phone), from people who express surprise that someone has answered as they thought they would be leaving a message on a phone in an office. The phone is normally at Stephanie’s home but it is in a part of the property where it will not disrupt family life in the evenings and can be responded to when she is free to do so. People can leave messages on the answer phone but we would suggest that these are made at reasonable times because it is in a place where it can be heard once she has retired for the night.
As I have mentioned many times, we are all volunteers fitting the work with cats around our activities, so our free time is valuable. We have had recent instances where people have made appointments to come and view a cat, have not turned up and have not let our volunteer know. One recently wasted her precious Saturday morning waiting for someone to arrive. A quick call to say they had changed their mind would have been preferable from her point of view. Another of our volunteers, a young mum, with two children, who works part time, has been let down on more than one occasion recently by people bringing cats into care. In two instances the people have changed their minds but not let her know in good time and,
Mob: (emergency contact) 07767 492456 randallselectrical@tiscali.co.uk
in another instance, changed the day and time for bringing the cat in several times. This has meant that time she would have normally given to her children’s activities was lost. Letting us know in good time of any changes makes all the difference to all our volunteers and also their families.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be Loki, nice young boy, able to help with any other enquiries. The num- recently arrived in care ber also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Wheelchair user left housebound by DWP failure, MP learns
Disabled people are being treated appallingly as a result of Government rules which take vehicles away following PIP assessments before claimants have a chance to appeal, says North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.
A wheelchair user from North Walsham has had to unnecessarily give up her motability vehicle after the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) failed to notify her that they had overturned a Personal Independent Payment (PIP) assessment that would have seen it removed.
Julie Potter has needed to use a wheelchair for a decade due to an accident in 2006 which left her with debilitating back pain. A recent PIP assessment decided she could walk between 20 and 50 metres without using an aid or appliance, meaning she would no longer be entitled to a motability vehicle. In fact, Mrs Potter cannot walk more than 6 metres slowly with crutches, and cannot leave the house without a wheelchair. After Mrs Potter got in touch with her local MP, Norman Lamb, he wrote a letter of complaint to PIP on 2 November 2017. The decision was consequently overturned but there was a failure to notify both Mr Lamb’s office and Mrs Potter until after an appeal had been lodged.
Mrs Potter was warned that she had to return her motability vehicle by mid-December or lose a one-off £2000 payment from Motability to replace the car privately. Mrs Potter complied with this instruction, unaware that the decision had been overturned. She has now been informed she can’t get a motability vehicle for another 6 months and is effectively housebound as a result.

The claimant’s husband, Christopher Potter, said “We are frankly disgusted with the way the DWP have handled Julie’s case. They based their decision to decline the motability element on incorrect information. By the time they did their reassessment and changed their opinion it was too late.” Her case is not isolated – Mr Lamb has learnt of another constituent who may unfairly lose her motability vehicle following a PIP assessment. Along with depression and heart issues, the constituent, who has asked not to be named, has a serious degenerative disease which prevents her from moving freely.
The constituent struggles to move around her house or to the nearest bus stop without aid. An assessment in the summer decided she was able to walk 19 metres unaided and therefore only qualified for the Standard Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, which does not provide a motability vehicle.
CrWmer HWlt AylshWm
NWRTH WALSHAM WrWxham
The assessment was decided based on an examination conducted on a flat open surface dissimilar to the area the constituent lives in, and was conducted in half an hour, not allowing for a thorough assessment. Her last assessment in 2009 led to her being awarded the vehicle despite her not requesting it. Since then her condition has deteriorated, and is expected to only get worse. The constituent asserts that her ability changes daily and most days she cannot walk 19 metres without taking substantial breaks, and can’t leave the house unaided. Her motability vehicle means she can do volunteer driving for Transport Plus, as well as get out of the house to meet other people and help in the community. The constituent said “I’ve found the motability vehicle extremely useful as it’s given me independence. After many years of relying on the community, I am now able to put something back into it. If I lost my car I would stagnate.”
Mr Lamb said “This is an appalling treatment of people. It is unacceptable that assistance for PIP claimants is being taken away before they have the chance to appeal the decision. It’s particularly frustrating given that many appeals end in the original decision being reversed, while the claimant often finds their quality of life severely affected without reason. The DWP needs to look closely at how it deals with PIP assessments, and the reality of how they affect people’s lives.”
A spokesperson for Norfolk Community Law Service, which deals with many PIP assessment appeals, said “The quality of the assessments we see are not good and there’s a high overturn rate at tribunal and on appeal. Regarding motability vehicles, the issue is the time limit for appeals at the moment are very long due to a high volume of appeals, so there’s a risk that a claimant who has their car removed gets it back on appeal but is left without transport for a long time and it’s quite a distressing time for them – that is quite a big problem.”

Norwich & Norfolk Campaign For Real Ale Competition has been launched early for the logo for Norwich Beer Festival’s 41st year The annual competition has been launched by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) to find the new logo for the 41st Norwich Beer Festival, taking place from Monday 22 October until Saturday 27 October 2018. The competition has commenced early this year as the Norwich & Norfolk branch will be hosting the Great British Beer Festival Winter (Tuesday 20 February until Saturday 24 February). For more information visit winter.gbbf.org.uk.
The deadline for competition entrants is 9pm Monday 19 February and Norwich & Norfolk CAMRA are looking for innovative designs depicting a dragon of some form. Members and volunteers can feel proud of another successful Norwich Beer Festival in 2017, which marked its 40th year and saw 18,000 visitors. Now the
preparations for the popular annual event can commence for 2018.
Ian Stamp, Chairman, said “We are hoping to receive lots of entries, although they must include a dragon in some form, the entrants can choose a setting or background of their choice. We always look forward to seeing the selection of talented entrants. The logo of the winner will be depicted on the festival glass, programme, and other merchandise”.
As always, the essential element is that a dragon must be included within the design, although abstract is acceptable. Also, a maximum of five colours (four is preferable) can be used, including any black or white parts of the design.

All entries must be in a standard image format (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, BMP, or PDF). Vector files are welcome as long as a standard image format is included. The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. eastlaw’s innovative and agile approach has not only secured it position as a value for money, specialist legal service which is efficient, effective and highly regarded, it has been recognised nationally with a number of prestigious awards.
Cllr. Judy Oliver, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal Services, said “Congratulations to eastlaw and yet another, well deserved accolade. Being shortlisted this prestigious award is testament to the team’s excellent track record of service to the Council and to other public sector partners and I, and my colleagues, wish them the best of luck for the finals”.
The winners of the award will be announced on 15 March at a ceremony in London.

North Walsham Table Tennis Scham’s Maximum helps NWSCF to a win
In the Second Division, NWSCF’s Gudi Scham, Sarah Tudhope and Edna Stone hosted LCC Seal’s Hayden Kerr, Jeremy James and Peter Ratcliffe with Kerr winning the opener against Stone in five. Stone went on to take two wins in straight while Kerr beat Tudhope in three. Scham edged Kerr 12-10 in the fourth and was taken to five by Ratcliffe but her maximum helped NWSCF to an 8-2 win. In the Premier Division, Shark’s Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Howard Lupton and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. Patterson took a brace beating Beane 14-12 in the third before edging Baldock-Yaxley from two down 14-16, 3-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10. Lupton dropped just one set against Patterson and Baldock-Yaxley beat Matt Hudson in five as NWSCA won 8-2. NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Westgate and Werner Zivna hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner with Wilson winning an intense opener against Elliott in five. Elliott went on to edge out Warner 13-11 in the fourth before changing his direction of shots in the last four points to
scrape past De Neve 11-3, 11-3, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8. Warner beat Zivna in straight but was beaten 12-10 in the fourth against Westgate. The doubles saw Wilson and De Neve edge Westgate and Zivna 15-13 in the fourth, but NWSCB won the match 7-3. The following week, NWSCB were beaten 7-3 by Mundesley A.
In the First Division, NWSCC’s trio of David Binns, John Chapman and Frank Weston all took braces as they won 6-4 in a derby with NWSCE for whom James Lester took a maximum – edging Binns 12-10 in the fifth – and Andrew Weston and Tom Wardle won the doubles in five against Chapman and Weston. A Binns maximum helped NWSCC to another win, this time 7-3 away to Mundesley B, while a two man NWSCE of the Lesters managed a draw with LCC Crabs with James taking another maximum. NWSCD’s Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone hosted Crosscourt’s John Welsh, Steve Dams and Derek Sidaway (playing up) with the opener seeing Dams dish out a master-class in straight sets against Stone. After a couple of missed match-point chances
Numbers attending training for the new Girls team (pictured) on Sunday mornings have been good but newcomers are very welcome - 10am start, just turn up or contact mikestmack@gmail.com.
Two exciting games since the last report. First the Vikings put in a memorable performance at Ruislip scoring ten tries in a 64 -5 victory.
The Youth teams have begun their Cup campaigns with the Under 14s, 15s & 16s winning all their matches to date and the Colts losing at Southwold.
Then came a 15 all draw versus Fullerians at Scottow. The muddy conditions very much suited the Watford side's big pack but the hosts put in an outstanding defensive performance. This game was unfortunately Hal Riley's last before joining Stourbridge, who play two leagues higher.
Ahead of visiting third placed Amersham & Chiltern on the final weekend of January, the Vikings were in fifth place on 51 points, way behind joint leaders Brentwood and Chingford who have 75, but only seven ahead of eighth placed Fullerians.
The Raiders have completed their fixtures in Eastern Counties One (North) finishing second behind Fakenham after winning six of their last seven. This means they now enter the Eastern Counties Shield alongside Fakenham and the two leading sides from the West and South sections.

in the third, Welsh beat Porritt 11-8, 11-7, 15-17, 10-12, 11-9, but Porritt’s second attempt at a comeback from two down proved successful as he beat Dams. Hook also picked up a fine win against Dams 14-12, 11-4, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9. With the score at 5-3 to the hosts, Welsh kept the visitors in contention by completing his maximum in four against Stone – who squandered two chances to move two sets ahead – but Porritt and Hook sealed a 6-4 win for NWSCD by beating Welsh and Dams 12-10 in the fourth in the doubles. Mundesley B’s Trevor Vincent, Thomas Rooke and the returning Paul Gotts then hosted the same NWSCD trio the next week with Rooke beating both Porritt and Hook from two sets to one down and Vincent edging Porritt 15-13 in the fourth. Stone took a maximum with no sets dropped, Hook’s brace included a win in four against Vincent and the duo combined for a doubles win in four against Vincent and Gotts as NWSCD won 7-3 to increase their lead at the top of the League table.
The Vikings are at home this Saturday (3rd) versus South Woodham Ferrers, when the Raiders are also at Scottow playing Shelford 3rd XV in the Shield. The following week the Vikings are at Holt for a Norfolk Cup semi final tie.
