Nine year old Lily is crowned Junior Miss UK T
Newly Refurbished at
Lily Harfield, aged 9, from North Walsham has been crowned Junior Miss UK at a national
modelling pageant staged locally at the Lenwade House Hotel, by the Norfolk based Kerri Parker Academy.
Over 70 children entered the Mr & Miss UK contest, which included various adult and child age categories and a variety of rounds including spring fashion and evening wear. Further categories included charity crowns for those who raised the most money towards Brain Tumour Research, a charity close to the heart of Academy owner, international model and ex-Playboy Playmate Kerri Parker.
Kerri was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2013 and since overcoming the illness has worked tirelessly to raise funds through events run by the Academy, totalling over £10,000 in the last year alone.
Lily has helped to raise funds for the Charity through her involvement with the Academy with a contribution of over £100 so far and is looking forward to fundraising for Brain Tumour Research with the Academy in the future.

Nine year old Lily is crowned Junior Miss UK
Continued from front cover... Lily is now set to attend bigger events representing the Academy as a result of her win. She will also be entering the Model of the Year contest held by the Academy in August this year. Lily is really excited and can’t wait, she is a little fashionista and really loves choosing dresses for the pageants and showing them off on the catwalk!
“The Miss UK contest was Lily’s second pageant and we can’t believe she has won the Miss UK title” said her mum, Stacy. “She is amazing and we are so proud of her. Her confidence has grown tremendously since her involvement with the Academy - she has gone from a shy little girl to a confident young lady who literally rocked the catwalk with her smile and enthusiasm!”
Lily is a competition gymnast and trains ten hours a week at North Walsham Gymnastics Club. She has been involved heavily in fundraising for her beloved Club which has recently opened a brand new purpose built facility. Lily also spends many hours helping Mummy, who is Chairperson of her school’s PTFA, prepping and helping out at events. Stacy added “Lily really is a little superstar and we are excited to see what the future brings for her modelling career with the Academy”.

North Walsham Community Shop
North Walsham Community Shop opened on 15 January and thanks to generous support from the town’s community, has successfully been raising funds to support its stated aims of supporting local projects.
The April batch of grant awards were made by its grants committee on 5 April. The committee comprises the four Trustees, plus two independent members, Curate Rachel Dines and Councillor Garry Bull.
The April grants of £1,037 were : • £600 to fund the water play area at North Walsham Junior, Infant and Nursery Schools • £150 to fund the publicity of the great work of the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme • £286.80 to ‘Save our Streets’ to fund additional speed safety signage on Aylsham Road
Trustee Bob Wright said that “we have now made grants of £2,194 over our first two months of trading and hope to make many more in the future.
We recycle unwanted items into community funding and can only achieve that if local groups continue to request grants and local people continue to bring us items for sale.
We are grateful for the continued support we have received this month” Applications forms for the future grants are available in the shop at No 1 Market Place and should be submitted by the end of each month. NO BIKE. NO EDUCATION. NO FUTURE. CAN YOU HELP?
Chat is 12 years old. Every day she walks two hours to school and two hours back again because she knows education is the key to her future and the future of her country.
Like Chat, many of the poorest students in Cambodia live in remote rural areas where, although there are Primary Schools, there are hardly any Secondary or High Schools. These are located mostly in the towns and with no public transport system, the only way to get there is a long walk down dirt roads which are often impassable in the raining season.
This severely restricts access to education beyond the most basic level and prevents young people like Chat achieving the grades they need for university or training.
The answer? Bicycles! Simple and effective. In Cambodia a bicycle costs around £40 and will be used not just by the student but by their siblings and neighbours too so it’s real value for money.
But many families simply cannot afford to buy sturdy bikes, suitable for the rough terrain so
North Norfolk-based charity Support Cambodia (Charity No. 1160483) are raising funds to buy at least 20 bikes for children to get to school.
The charity hopes to raise the £800+ needed at their 7th Annual Plant Sale to be held in North Walsham on Saturday 19 May.
In addition to the Chat usual ‘100s of plants at low prices’, there will be Bake, Produce and Craft Stalls and a Cafe serving drinks and hot food.
As the 19th is also the ‘ Wedding of the Year’ there’ll be a royal theme to the event with TV coverage available for those who’d like to
Thank you from Raise Norfolk
‘Support Cambodia’ but don’t want to miss the events in Windsor.
Every penny raised at the Plant Sale will go to the Bikes Fund as Support Cambodia takes no administration costs from charitable donations. Local businesses who have confirmed their support for the event include Woodgate Nursery, Hill Cottage Nursery, South Creake Nursery, Edgefield Nursery, J.B Postle & Son, M.F. Barnwell & Sons and Showcase Gallery North Walsham
The Support Cambodia Plant Sale is at Sacred Heart Catholic Hall, Norwich Road, North Walsham (opposite Paston College)] on Saturday 19 May, strict 9am start. Car parking available. Further information www.supportcambodia.org.uk, on the charity’s Facebook page or telephone 01263 577784.
Raise Norfolk would like to thank all those that attended their Mini Easter Sale which raised £286. This will go towards their St Benet community garden project which is redesigning the garden and making it accessible for everyone.
Raise Norfolk works with adults with learning disabilities (raising aspirations through engagement) and is based at St Benet Hall on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Its ethos is to improve skills, to gain confidence, to enhance communication, to try something new and to do this in a relaxed, fun and creative environment. New members are always welcome. Family Fun day to celebrate Norfolk Wildlife
Trust’s newest reserve at Pigney’s Wood, a local nature reserve within walking distance of North Walsham, has just joined the Norfolk Wildlife Trust ‘family’.
To celebrate, the Trust is holding an Open Day with fun for all ages on Sunday 29 April, 11am – 3pm. Attractions include a storyteller, guided walks, minibeast hunting and woodland craft demonstrations. All are welcome and it’s completely free.
Despite the name this site is much more than a wood. It has a reed bed and several ponds, as well as lovely open, grassy meadows, and benches with one of the best views in Norfolk! This is a place that owes its existence to the local community, having been bought by a group of local people
who formed the North Norfolk Community Woodland Trust and planted over 20,000 trees. 24 years later it has now been handed over to Norfolk Wildlife Trust to secure its future for everyone to enjoy.
The site has a number of special wildlife features for everyone to enjoy, including an impressive 450-year-old ancient oak tree ‘the Old Oak’ which is next to a small woodland area which boasts a carpet of bluebells in spring. Pigneys Wood provides an important wildlife refuge for many birds such as the goldcrest, nuthatch and Cetti’s Warbler, butterflies such as red admiral, peacock and holly blue and dragonflies such as the emperor, migrant
New Information & Heritage Centre Opens
For 40 years or more various groups in North Walsham have dreamt of opening a Heritage Centre to enable the town’s rich history to be displayed to inform residents and visitors alike. Last year saw the North Walsham Heritage Group’s ‘Big Society’ funded temporary exhibition in St Nicholas Church. This was very well received and inspired the group

hawker, blacktailed skimmer and Norfolk hawker. Mark Webster, Norfolk Wildlife Trust Project Officer, said “We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Pigneys on 29 April and we hope that people will come and enjoy this site on other days too.”
Pigneys Wood can be found by taking Bacton Road out of North Walsham and then turning left towards Knapton onto Hall Lane (OS Map Reference TG 296321, nearest postcode NR28 0SH). The site is open from dawn till dusk, every day, all year round.
Anyone wanting further information or a programme of upcoming activities at Pigneys Wood should contact Mark on 07843 069 567 or via markw@norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk
to seek the next step, a permanent home. At the same time the Town Council were themselves seeking a permanent home for their Information Centre and they decided to lease the Saddlers Rooms on Vicarage Street which included the former meeting room that could be sub-leased to become the Heritage Centre.
North Walsham Heritage Group was extremely grateful to have been awarded a grant in March, from the Wensum and Coast Local Action Group under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. Their grant of £4,767 will provide cabinets and other display equipment to improve the presentation of North Walsham’s 2,000 year history. The Heritage Centre and Information Centre will together form ‘Mi North Walsham’ and be run entirely by volunteers. This opened its doors on Monday 16 April and initially between 10am and 2pm Monday to Friday.
The Heritage Centre is a record of the local community and will be developed over the coming months. The team is keen to receive donations of local items that can help describe the town’s history. Documents and photos can tell the story but physical objects can help make that history much more accessible, especially to younger generations. If you have any suitable objects then the North Walsham Heritage Group would love to hear from you. You can contact them on info@northwalshamheritage.org.uk
The Information Centre will provide details of local facilities, attractions, events, travel and anything else related to North Walsham too. Please do let them know about your future events. This is linked to the ‘M.i. North Walsham’ Facebook page and the team can be contacted on reception@northwalsham-town.co.uk
If you’d like to get involved as a volunteer with either part of Mi North Walsham, they’d love to hear from you too.

Spring has Sprung
It finally seems as though Spring has sprung after what’s seemed like an endless winter.
With the longer days comes more times outdoors for almost all our pets, especially cats. This coincides with the clocks going forward and in my experience there seems to be an increase in the number of road traffic accidents (RTAs) at this time of year as well. In fact, as people and their pets become more active, we seem to get busier at the vets as well!
One such case was Kimi a 3-year-old domestic shorthaired cat who was hit by a car a couple of weeks ago, and subsequently went missing for two days before being brought to the surgery.

She seemed quite bright in herself, but her respiration rate was elevated and she was occasionally coughing up blood. Kimi is only small so the impact from a car, even at low speeds can be catastrophic, so it is always wise to take x-rays of any patient that has had an RTA.
X-rays of her chest revealed a tear in her diaphragm that had allowed part of her liver to slide into her chest collapsing the lung on the right hand side. This type of injury, known as a diaphragmatic hernia, is relatively common and often life threatening.
Fortunately, there were no other breaks or fractures visible and her owners were keen to try everything to save her. Kimi was stabilised on intravenous fluids and pain relief before surgery was performed the following day. She had torn two thirds of her diaphragm, but her internal organs were not otherwise damaged and surgery to repair her diaphragm was a success.
She recovered incredibly quickly and was home with her owners 48 hours later and has gone from strength to strength.

From Teacher to Playwright …
Stage Direct are about to showcase a new play by a new playwright to be performed in North Walsham. The group would like to introduce their man David Starling as a talented writer who will join others from the group in complimenting their zest for home written works. By day, David Starling works with children with autism as a class leader at St Andrew’s School in Aylmerton, near Cromer. Away from the classroom, however, David leads a very different existence. He acts with Stage Direct Theatre Company and with Black Cat Theatre and also writes. Stage Direct have previously produced some of David’s work in the form of comedy sketches and short plays. This June (29 & 30) at the Atrium in North Walsham, Stage Direct will be producing, for the first time, a full length play written by David.‘Good Morning, Mr Magpie’ is a Norfolk based play about Norfolk characters exploring the safety of home, the desire to chase dreams and all mixed in with a little bit of superstition and a helping of comedy.
01692 409705 07917 433700
David is just one more of the Stage Direct writer’s conveyor belt. Last year saw Stage Direct member Ashley Burgoyne’s comedy, ‘The Village Hall’, getting a great reception from an appreciative Atrium audience and plans are currently underway to air a comic play written by another member, Nigel Manson, in early 2019 in the little theatre. Chairman Derek Bull has written a screenplay and is presently putting the finishing touches to his novel while yet another Stage Direct actor, Melissa Collin, is a published poet.

Brilliant Broadland in WW1 must see exhibition on now!
At the Museum of the Broads we are proud to announce that our new exhibition is now open and is on until Armistice Day, Sunday 11 November. It not only covers the local men who fought, but also looks at life on the home front. Did you know the first ever air raid was a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin on a Broadland village? The role of women is also covered in the exhibition looking at their various roles, including the Women’s Land Army. The exhibition includes a film made in 2014 with local people and Stalham High School. It has some fascinating artefacts, and some great stories including 2 lovely love stories. The Museum has been thoughtfully put together and is decorated by a number of handmade poppies produced by some of our volunteers and friends, commemorating relatives who served. Special events this month include the Boat and Fishing Jumble on Sunday 13 May. Why not pop along and grab Neil Storey who opened our annual a bargain.? This is part of the Broads Outdoor Festival. exhibition, Broadland During Our Emergency Services Day is on Sunday 27 May with the First World War Broads Authority, Hemsby Lifeboat/Inshore rescue, HMS coastguard, Norfolk Police, local council and RNLI attending. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As mentioned last time, we receive many calls at this time of year about stray cats and, in the last week, three have come into care. The first one had been around since last summer and because the lady who had been looking after her was unable to continue for health reasons, Dixie came into care. On arrival we discovered she had been chipped but, despite contacting the number given on the micro chip database, we were unable to contact her previous owner. As the address on the records was some distance away, we fear she had probably been abandoned. We also checked lost and found records yet again without success. Dixie is a lovely friendly cat and once she has had a broken tooth removed, will be available for adoption. The second cat that came into care was caught by a lady who had hoped it was her much loved cat that had been missing for some considerable time. However, once in the trap it was obvious he did not fit the bill. Mr Pastry needed immediate attention at the vets as his coat was in a dreadful state, one of the worst we have seen. Now completely shorn like a little lamb, this dear little lad, who is not even a year old and had not been neutered, will receive lots of grooming as his coat grows back to ensure this does not happen again. Another white cat, Mr Pastry, (unlike Gandalf, who has now left us and enjoying life in his new home,) is a domestic long haired cat with lovely green eyes. The third new stray to arrive was King Tut, a friendly black and white lad, this time short haired, that had been handed in to local vets as a stray. King Tut had also not been neutered which probably resulted in him becoming lost as, who knows how far he has travelled to find a female. King Tut is a few years older than Mr Pastry and the vets had blood tested him for FIV/FELV before handing him into our care. Even though he has a few scars at present from fights with other tom cats, we know these will fade, just like Gandalf’s, and we will have another handsome lad looking for a new home. At some time in the past both Mr Pastry and King Tut found new homes with families when they were kittens. They have come into our care because their owners did not have them neutered or chipped so, unfortunately, although we do make enquiries to see if there is an owner out there, we have not been able to find them. Similarly, with Dixie, although chipped, we see the importance of making sure that the cat’s records are amended. If you move, please contact the chip company to get your details changed.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neuSandie - 9 years young tering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Stand Up For Labour
Comedian Norman Lovett, aka Holly in Red Dwarf, will headline the Stand Up For Labour gig in North Walsham Community Centre on Thursday 31 May at 7.30pm. Presented by the North Norfolk Labour Party, he will be supported by Norwich mind-reading comedian Doug Segal and Helen Ivory, an award winning poet. Although best known as Holly, Norman Lovett is one of the most influential comedians in the country who has developed his own style since the 1970s. Doug Segal has sold out two UK tours and made numerous TV appearances. Helen Ivory has won a Gregory Award and her semi-autobiographical ‘Waiting for Bluebeard’ was shortlisted for the East Anglian Book Awards. Mandy McKenna who is organising the event said ‘I can’t quite believe we got Norman Lovett for North Walsham. He is hugely popular nationally and we are hoping he will draw a very good crowd. It promises to be a great evening where the community can come together in the centre which will be transformed into a nightclub. There will be a raffle and licensed bar.” Tickets: £10 (earlybird) before 1 May, £12 in advance, £15 on the door. Available from jeanne.heal@norfolklabour.co.uk or www.standupforlabour.co.uk
PET CT SCANNING ARRIVES IN NORTH WALSHAM!
Regular visitors to Toll Barn Vets will have noticed the recent building works and we are delighted to announce the specialist extension has been designed to house our very own on-site CT Scanner! CT scanners use radiation in the same way as x-rays but allow a complete 3D image of the pet with specialised software then allowing advanced reconstructions including 3D skeletal, blood vessel and soft tissue reconstructions. CT scanners have thousands of applications within veterinary care and are the best (and sometimes only) method of diagnosing and assessing the optimal treatment options for some forms of orthopaedic disorders such as elbow dysplasia, complex fractures, bone tumours and limb growth deformities. CT scanning also provides for improved tumour management as they are much more sensitive than conventional x-ray in the search for tumour spread, assessing the 3D boundaries of the tumour to allow precise surgical removal. CT scanning also provides for better identification of nasal disease including tumour, fungal infection, bacterial infection and foreign bodies; ear disease including middle ear disease; lung disease including infection, tumour, foreign bodies and trauma damage; neurological conditions including imaging of the spine, spinal cord and brain.
Our CT scanner is a very specialised machine which is able to image all species of pets from the smallest lizard to the largest dogs. Currently, the nearest alternative CT scanner for pets is over an hour away which means many pets require referral to other practices to allow advanced imaging with CT scanners to assist in diagnosis and treatment.
12
We are delighted with our recent CT scanner addition and after our intensive specialist training have already been making use of it to help treat pets under our care. As CT scanners are so few and far between the addition of our on-site CT scanner marks a big investment and improvement in the standard of care currently accessible to local pets and owners. To find out more about our CT scanning service please contact the Toll Barn Vets team on 01692 407126.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
At our March meeting we welcomed back Dulcie Lofting, an Area Demonstrator from West Norfolk, who entertained us with her demonstration ‘Tres Chic’ which focused on iconic clothing designers, past and present, which she interpreted in her six floral designs.
Janet Attew, Club President, presented a cheque for £1,000 to Mr Stephen Burke, Trustee from Age UK (Norfolk)
The money was raised over the last year from the sale of Christmas wreaths, from other Club events and also donations received when members carry out floral work on behalf of the Club.
Over the coming year we will continue our fund-raising and our chosen charity is to be The Friends of Cromer Hospital.
Looking ahead, we have our first Open Meeting of the year on Thursday 31 May at the Atrium Theatre on Spenser Avenue, North Walsham. Gill McGregor is a well-known floral designer and author of several specialist booklets and will be doing a demonstration to celebrate our 60th Anniversary. ‘Diamonds are Forever’ will start at 1.30pm and be followed by tea and cakes in the dining hall.

NORTH NORFOLK SOCIAL CENTRE FOR THE BLIND
Our first meeting of the year was in February when Barrie Eke entertained members.
Barrie has been a regular at the Club for many years and is always well received. March was the month of snow and the meeting was cancelled for the first time in over 70 years! However, we were back to normal on 5 April when the Squeegees entertained us in their usual indomitable manner – a favourite of members.
The NNSCB is a charity for the blind and partially sighted which meets once a month in the Community Centre for entertainment, refreshments and conversation. The Club is run by a Committee and we are currently looking for helpers as two of our current Committee had to resign due to ill health. The Committee meets two or three times a year to plan and discuss various issues, as well as helping at the monthly meetings. If there is anyone out there who would like to help us, please contact Jean Stockdale (Secretary) on 402562 or Margaret Brown (Chairman) on 500400.
North Walsham Market Cross WI
North Walsham Market Cross WI has enjoyed a good variety of speakers so far this year.
Fashion Hats for January was great fun on a cold winter evening and in February we watched slides on North Walsham in the Past. March was our 52nd Birthday and we enjoyed Rachel Duffield as the Incendiary Blond, music from the ’40s.
In April we learned about Norton dairy farm and how they make cheese and yogurt. We have also welcomed three new members and enjoyed coffee and a natter at Lilly's Cafe and the President’s house. Earlier this month we went to Vera's (Meales Farm Shop) for our Spring Lunch. Our Craft, Book and Darts groups all continue.
Visitors and new members are always welcome. We meet on the second Wednesday evening of each month at St Benet’s rooms at 7.15 pm.

North Norfolk District Council moves to ban single-use plastics
NNDC will encourage businesses across the district to follow suit.
North Norfolk District Council is leading the drive to cut down on single-use plastics across the district, pledging to tackle the proliferation of items such as non-reusable bottles, cutlery and straws.
There was broad support for a motion at a recent meeting of the Full Council that will see singleuse plastic items phased out from the council’s offices in Cromer and Fakenham.
Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds, Conservative member for the Lancaster (North) ward, put forward the original motion, which said: “The environment, and the saving thereof, is a high priority of mine, as I know it is for many others. I therefore believe that NNDC should lead by example and review the use of single-use plastics at the council offices (including the Fakenham
16
office) and phase them out as quickly as is reasonably practical.”
An amendment put forward by Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Lib Dem member for The Runtons, called for the council to develop a strategy and educational programme to encourage businesses across the district to follow suit. The amended motion was passed.
Cllr John Lee, Leader of the Council and leader of the Conservative group at NNDC, said “Looking after the environment is vital – particularly in a district that is blessed with such wonderful countryside and coastlines. It’s only right that we build on the pride we all have in our district by leading the way in dealing with single-use plastics. They are a scourge on the environment, and the wide support for this move shows the importance that we all attach to this issue.”
Cllr Butikofer, leader of the Lib Dem group at NNDC, said “Included within this initiative is the development of a plan to encourage local businesses to follow the example being set by the council. We understand it is not practical in all cases but, as just one example, plastic takeaway food containers are an environmental disaster, and recyclable and biodegradable alternatives are now readily available. We all need to do what we can to drive down the amount of rubbish we send to landfill.” Cllr Nick Coppack, leader of the Independent group at NNDC, said: “We as a group voted unanimously for this motion as a phased and reasoned start to setting an example for the whole of North Norfolk. We need to look more seriously at plastics in general particularly in relation to the food industry.”

Family Law Update
from Clapham & Collinge Family Law Solicitor Neale Grearson
The rumours have started that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement drawn up. No idea what may be in it and Clapham & Collinge have not yet been instructed! This news has been met with a lot of interest and a realism about the need for such a document.
Apparently Prince Harry is worth about £30 million and Meghan about £4 million. Not entirely therefore a financial "level playing field" and exactly the type of relationship that cries out for a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Of course everyone hopes that their marriage will last forever but all marriages (including royal ones) are not guaranteed to do so. A report in the Daily Telegraph from December 2017 suggested that enquiries about Pre-Nuptial Agreements in this country had risen by about 70% in the last decade. Perhaps more staggeringly the same survey revealed that apparently about 21% of engaged couples who enquired about a PreNuptial Agreement called off their wedding after speaking to their lawyers!
to have a traditional marriage have argued that there is now inequality in the law as they do not have the choice to become Civil Partners. The plans are to publish a consultation on this to determine the effect of changes on other areas of legislation such as divorce law. Within this other changes are being considered such as the marriage "register" itself being replaced by a new single page "marriage schedule". Couples might no longer be given a "marriage certificate" on the day of the wedding and a single electronic register will replace the current system of registers being held in churches. The proposed reforms are within a back bench private members' bill in the House of Commons that the Government unexpectedly announced it was going to support. Tim Loughton who
Pre-Nuptial Agreements remain not guaranteed to be legally enforceable but increasingly are being taken into account. Whether you are talking about combined assets of £34 million or more modest figures does it not make sense to try to safeguard and ring fence assets that have been built up before a marriage? Increasingly relationships and marriages are not as straightforward as they were in the past. For example second or third marriages are now more common than they were a generation ago. Inherited wealth and money provided by parents can mean that when a couple get married their financial position is unequal. Should they not have the ability (and business acumen) to consider the eventualities and agree what would happen if they do divorce given that now nearly one in two marriages end in divorce? Does that throw cold water on the romance or is it just realism? So whether you are royalty or not a Pre-Nuptial Agreement as part of the wedding plan is becoming increasingly standard practice.
introduced the reforms said "we need to recognise that our society is changing and we need to adapt in order to promote family stability – in whatever form – to provide a continuum that gives children the best and most stable start in life." Colin Hart the Chairman of the Coalition for Marriage Campaign Group said extending Civil Partnerships to opposite sex couples will "profoundly undermine marriage. It will be seen as a low commitment form of the institution – a sort of marriage lite."

Marriage – Lite or Just Adapting to a Changed World
Currently Civil Partnerships are only available to same sex couples. Since the introduction of same sex marriage the debate has been taking place as to what should happen to Civil Partnerships. Should they be abolished or should they be available to opposite sex couples? The Home Office is now reviewing the operation of Civil Partnerships.

Our Men’s 2nd Team were away on the same night to Eaton Eagles and managed to steal a game from a very strong side. They were then at home to YMCA and just could not find any rhythm, losing 9-0 in a tough run of matches.
Despite losing heavily recently, our 2nd Team are showing some great signs, taking a lot of their games to a deciding rubber and it is only the first season for them, so next year looks promising!
Our Men’s 1st Team are faring somewhat
better, currently sitting 3rd in the league, although with other results yet to come in, I would expect us to drop to 4th. Having said that, our 1st Team played their last match of the season on 4 April and managed to pull off yet another close win, taking the match against Besthorpe 5-4 at Home.

North Walsham Table Tennis
Eight go the Distance as NWSCD clinch First Division Barracuda’s Andy Woods, Keith Register and Jon Cheyette hosted NWSCD with the visiting team of Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone only requiring three points to seal the First Division title. Stone opened with a five set win against Woods before Register saved match-point during his 6-11, 11-13, 18-16, 11-8, 11-5 come back against Porritt. Hook and Stone then beat Cheyette and Register in four and three respectively. Incredibly the remaining six battles all went the distance - and all the way of the visitors – after four hours of great table tennis, eight five-setters and a late 11:30pm finish, Barracudas were more than a little hard done by to lose 9-1. The same NWSCD trio then faced a derby with NWSCE with Stone winning the opener in straight against James Lester. The NWSCE player took a brace and a doubles win in four with Tom Wardle against Porritt and Stone, but NWSCD won 7-3 with some great serving from Ben Lester taking a set from Stone and Hook the distance. NWSCD’s final match of the season saw them suffer their first loss since
Two wins in the past two weeks against tough opponents meant the Vikings headed to Colchester on 21 April for their final League game assured of sixth place. Firstly they defeated seventh placed Old Priorians 38 -31 away in a remarkable game, scoring two converted tries in the last eight minutes. Then they beat Eton Manor (fifth) 25 -22 in another exciting match at Scottow.
October as Aylsham Conqueror took huge strides to avoid relegation with an 8-2 win, however it did not matter for NWSCD who wrapped up the First Division title by finishing 36 points ahead of both Crosscourts and Gresham’s School B who shared second spot.
After appearing in the League for each of the last twenty years, Edna Stone played her farewell match as she joined her NWSCF team-mates Sarah Tudhope and Gudi Scham for an away tie in the Second Division against Swordfish’s Ray Amo, Nigel Brady and Shelley Betts. Stone took a brace with wins in three and four against Betts and Amo but lost in four to Brady who also took a brace but was beaten in five by Scham whose good blocking and angles saw her to a maximum. Tudhope won nine straight points from 2-8 down in the third to close out her win against Betts. Amo and Brady won the doubles in four against Tudhope and Stone, but NWSCF won the match 6-4. A two player team of Scham and Tudhope also managed to draw in their away tie with Mundesley C.

The closest quarter-final in the Handicap Doubles Cup saw Dolphin’s Neil Edwards and Mick and Keegan Hammond host NWSCE’s Tom Wardle and James and Ben Lester. In the quarter-finals of the Handicap Singles Cup, NWSCC led 3-1 but were edged out 5-4 by Crosscourts.
