Laughter provides tonic for hospital Friends’ funds A comedy night is set to put a smile on the face of North Walsham Hospital supporters.

An evening of stand up at the town’s Atrium on 8 June will raise funds for the hospital’s Friends group – as part of a year-long effort led by mayor Barry Hester who adopted the cause as his official civic charity. The headliner at the Stand Up for North Walsham fundraiser is Hal Cruttenden – a well- known face from television comedy news series Mock The Week, and Have I Got News for You.

He has also appeared on Live at the Apollo and the Royal Variety Performance as well as comedy venues around the world. Hal is also a writer and TV and film actor, and is currently on a ‘Chubster’ tour, named by his daughters ... and on a diet.

North Norfolk Charities benefit from Law Firm Charity Scheme

In November 2018, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors launched their 2nd annual Charity Lasting Power of Attorney Scheme.

As planning for later life professionals and members of Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance and Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are keen to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place to provide you with peace of mind at a time when it’s needed most.

The scheme consisted of a 25% discount on Lasting Power of Attorneys throughout November and a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment, supporting four Norfolk based Charities; North Norfolk Community Transport, North Walsham Dementia Support Group (Cameo Café), The Feed and The Benjamin Foundation.

Andrea Smith, Marketing Executive said "We have been delighted by the response to our second charity scheme, it continues to be well received by our clients and it is a pleasure to be able hand over donations which will enable all the charities to continue with their great work across Norfolk.”

Claire Abbs, CEO at NNCT said "A huge Thank You to Clapham & Collinge Solicitors for including us as a beneficiary in their Lasting Powers of Attorney scheme in November, the money will be put to great use helping people in North Norfolk get out and about in our accessible minibuses”.

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors tackle Dementia Awareness Q&As Lin Whitehead

Dementia currently affects 850,000 people in the uK and it is thought that 225,000 people will develop dementia this year. that’s one every three minutes.

At Clapham & Collinge we play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia by holding regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it’s like to live with dementia and help create a dementia friendly community.

With Dementia Action Week 2019 taking place in May, we have taken the time to answer some of the most frequently asked questions which arise during our training sessions.

Q. What is dementia? Dementia is the term which describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function, such as memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. There are numerous conditions which fall under the heading of ‘dementia’ and it is important to know the difference between them as each exhibit different symptoms so will be treated differently. We have highlighted the most common forms of dementia below.

Q. Can someone still make legal documents if they have been diagnosed with dementia? It is often a concern for someone living with dementia that once they have been diagnosed there are no longer able to make or change

their legal documents, however this is incorrect.

As mentioned above, dementia and the severity of it can vary between each person, however provided a person has the mental capacity to make legal documents, they can do so despite having been diagnosed with dementia. It is a principle of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 that a person it not to be treated as unable to make a decision unless all practical steps have been taken to help them to do so.

The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions.

As capacity can fluctuate with a condition like dementia, people are said to have good and bad days, so it may be that more than one meeting is needed to determine if the person has the requisite capacity, and it is not uncommon for a solicitor to ask the person’s GP to assist, should they have any concerns.

Q. How can i get involved with Dementia Action Week 2019? Dementia Action Week is an initiative set up by the Alzheimer's Society which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by

Sims Foot Clinic

All of our lawyers are ‘dementia friends’ and so are experienced, knowledgeable and approachable to advise you the documents you may need if you have been diagnosed with dementia, or can provide you with advice and guidance on steps which may need to be taken if you have been appointed as an attorney for someone living with dementia and are unsure on your role.

For more information on the legal services Clapham & Collinge offer or to book an appointment please contact our dedicated Client Relations Team today on 01692 660230. Appointments available at our North Walsham, Sheringham and Norwich offices.

Salmon jerky with caper, shallot and dill mayo This is a lovely summer recipe with a beautiful taste and texture, perfect for enjoying with a crisp glass of white on the lawns.

We are lucky enough to be able to serve afternoon tea and dinner outside under the shade of the horse chestnuts and sycamores, which is wonderful now that the weather is heating up.

Afternoon tea runs throughout the year between 2 and 4.30pm, and dinner is served 5 – 6 (early evening menu) and 6 – 9.3pm (a la carte). Come in and see us! 01263512412 to book your table. serves 2

ingredients • 550g of salmon fillet, skin-on, boneless • 100ml of soy sauce • 1 tbsp of lemon juice, freshly squeezed • 1 tbsp of maple syrup • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 dash of tabasco • 2 tsp liquid smoke (I source ours from award

• • • • •

winning butcher H.G Graves, also available online or from Tescos) 100g of coarse sea salt 4 tbsp mayonnaise 1 jar of Lilliput capers 2 tsp chopped dill 1 banana shallot finely diced

Remove the pin bones and silver flesh from the fillet but leave the skin on. Wash thoroughly then pat dry. Place the fish in the freezer for 30 minutes before you begin, this makes it easier to slice. Once firm, cut into slices approximately 1cm in thickness. Mix the soy sauce, lemon juice, maple syrup, freshly ground pepper, pepper sauce and the liquid smoke and whisk well.

Coat the salmon strips in the bowl of marinade, transfer to a sealable bag and allow to marinate for at least 12 hours in the fridge.

Pat dry with a clean kitchen towel. Position a clean wire rack over a baking tray, sprinkle the salmon pieces with coarse salt on both sides and let it 'dry' in the fridge for 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 75°C. Brush away all the salt from the salmon pieces.

Cover the wire rack with parchment paper or a silicon mat and place over a clean baking sheet. Lay the salmon strips out spaced evenly on top.

Cook the salmon until it reaches 75°C. Lower the heat to 60°C, steadily cooking the fish for about 4 and a half hours in total, flipping halfway through. The final jerky should be crispy outside and chewy and sticky inside. For the caper, shallot and dill mayo. Mix all ingredients in a small mixing bowl, folding until it is evenly mixed.

LOCAL MP PLEDGES TO BE A BOWEL CANCER CHAMPION

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, has pledged to become a bowel cancer champion and lead change in Parliament for people affected by the disease.

Norman Lamb MP will work with Bowel Cancer UK to improve early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care both in North Norfolk and nationally. By bringing people together, such as patients and families, doctors and nurses, scientists and politicians Bowel Cancer UK will create a future where nobody dies of the disease.

Every 15 minutes someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer, making it the UK's fourth most common cancer. It's also the second biggest cancer killer more than 16,000 people die from the disease every year.

Norman Lamb MP said “It simply isn’t acceptable that so many people die from bowel cancer each year. I am proud to be working with Bowel Cancer UK and helping them make real change happen through my role as a bowel cancer champion. My wider family has suffered loss through bowel cancer. I look forward to using my position in Parliament to call for changes which can improve outcomes for patients with the disease in North Norfolk and across the country. Together we can stop people dying of bowel cancer.”

Bowel cancer screening can detect the disease at an early stage in people with no symptoms when it is easier to treat and a greater chance of survival. Last year, governments in England and Wales announced they will lower the bowel cancer screening age from 60 to 50 using the potentially more accurate faecal immunochemical test (FIT). Introducing these initiatives will save more lives from this disease.

Flying the (Blue) Flags for North Norfolk’s fabulous beaches

All six beaches have retained their prestigious gongs for another year. it’s official! North Norfolk continues to have some of the best beaches in the country.

The beaches in Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton have all been awarded prestigious Blue Flags for another year – and that means the 45-mile North Norfolk coastline is home to half of all the Blue Flag beaches in the east of England.

The awards are given out only to those beaches that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. It means the hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors who visit North Norfolk’s beaches each year can be sure they are enjoying top-notch destinations.

North Norfolk is the only district in the county that has been awarded any Blue Flags this year.

As well as the Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, has won a Seaside Award, which guarantees visitors a clean, safe, attractive and well-managed coastal stretch.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is fantastic news and highlights once again what fantastic beaches we have in North Norfolk.

“It is testament to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes all year round to keep our beaches in tip-top condition and guarantee their safety and cleanliness.”

Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which runs the Blue Flags scheme, said “The success of the beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses. “When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”

There is evidence that the awards attract more visitors, with the number of people visiting the district’s beaches rising from 100,000 a year to 400,000 since they started being awarded Blue Flags.

A wonder of our coast in Norfolk are the beautiful Grey and Common seals You have probably seen quite a bit in the media this winter regarding seals being hurt or injured by litter such as plastic and frisbees. Here at Westover we are fortunate to be able to assist local wildlife rescue charities in treating these animals.

Many of us walk our coastline and as a result will be lucky enough to have encounters with seals on our way. Although it is fundamentally important to respect them and keep your distance, there are things to look out for that may help if they are injured or unwell.

Here are a few pointers that may help you if you should come across a seal whilst out

walking: • Is the seal aware of your presence and moving? If not, then phone a charity for advice. • Is there any obvious bleeding or wounds? If so, then phone a charity for advice. • If there is a blue spot on the back end of the seal this usually means a warden has been out and checked the seal. There is no need to call anyone as it is under surveillance. • Keep your dogs well away from the seal! Particularly in areas where there are often seals present it is vital to keep your dog on a lead to avoid injury to either them or the seal. • If there is netting or plastic stuck around the seal call a charity for advice. • Do not force the seal to go back into the sea (they like to rest on the sand and they can

drown if forced back into the sea).

We work closely with local charities who can give help and advice so here are some contact phone numbers should you ever need them:

It all started when...

... hosting a dinner party for friends and family, the conversation steered towards the food. After many kind words and compliments, they said, “We could eat your food every day”.

With our busy lifestyles and the frustration of ‘we never have time to cook each evening after a busy day with work’, the conversation continued. We want a meal that’s quick and convenient but doesn’t compromise on nutrition or taste? Light bulb moment! If on days like that, you could just open your freezer and discover a library of carefully-prepared meals waiting for you to heat up in a jiffy… No need to plan ahead!

We did our research and the results were that (however much of a foodie you are) sometimes you just don’t feel like cooking from scratch

What we do… After further research and product development the business began - Norfolk Gourmet Kitchen. The company goal - create nutritious and tasty food! We set about creating and tweaking recipes to create wholesome, all-natural dishes that tasted just as delicious when cooked from frozen. Why did we choose to fill people’s freezers, not their fridges? Because the freezer would immediately lock in the incredible flavours and nutritional goodness of each dish, naturally reducing food waste by keeping their food ‘fresh’ for up to six months.

Once we had nailed the recipes, we started delivering our freshly frozen meals directly to food-loving folk across Norfolk. Simply

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Many thanks to all those who attended the Spring Sale. It was lovely to see so many friends once again and have the opportunity to talk about ‘cats’. At the time of writing we still have to count the proceeds.

Last time, we mentioned the little cat we called Quinsy who, from the symptoms he was showing, was believed to have been infected with the FELV virus. Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence nowadays as responsible owners will have vaccinated their cats to prevent them becoming infected, and this underlines the importance of ensuring your cat has its boosters every year. The virus is usually transmitted through direct contact with the saliva of infected cats, through grooming or sharing food and water bowls or through mating behaviour. Kittens can also be infected by their mother while in the womb or through her milk.

FELV is a virus that causes a fatal disease in cats, affecting their immune system, which can make them vulnerable to other infections, anaemia or tumours. It does not infect people. Although we do not test all cats for FELV, and FIV, when they come into care, we do test those whose previous lifestyle could have resulted in them coming into contact with either of these viruses. This will be done on the first visit to the vets and the result is very often available while still at the surgery. If the test does prove to be positive, bloods are sent to specialist laboratories for further analysis as the results for the original test can be inaccurate (we have had instances when this has occurred). It is Cats Protection’s policy not to rehome cats who are infected with FELV as their quality of life will be poor. For people who own a cat that is FELV positive it is important to keep them indoors and away from any FELV negative cats (to avoid infecting them) and to ensure they are fully vaccinated to help protect them from other infections.

Blood tests are just one of the investigations now carried out by veterinary practices. Veterinary medicine has advanced dramatically

in recent years and all vets now have equipment and expertise available which would have been unheard of even 10 years ago. Veterinary surgeons now often specialise in particular fields, Otto, another timid young cat who will need time such as cardiology, to adapt orthopaedics, microsurgery and dentistry (this one I am very familiar with over the last few months with my own cat). Veterinary nurses also undertake extensive training which can take 2 to 3 years for them to qualify. Not forgetting the ladies on reception who are knowledgeable about the products on offer, give advice if appropriate and are able to identify whether or not an animal needs to be treated as an emergency. Even for non-emergencies, you can usually see a vet on the same day!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

‘Wally the Elephant’ celebrated St. George’s Day with Scouts at Beeston Hall School

West Runton Scout Group played host to this year’s St George’s Day Celebration on behalf of North East Norfolk District Scouts, and by kind permission of the School Headmaster, Fred de Falbe the Celebration was held on the Beeston Hall School Sports Field and in a blaze of sunshine proved to be a memorable and enjoyable event for all.

Civic Dignitaries, parents, friends and supporters saw 500 Scout members aged from 6 years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Adult Leaders and Supporters all assembled at Beeston Regis Holiday Park clifftop field. 3.

West Runton Group formed the District Colour Party this year and led the procession along the cliffs, through Laburnham Caravan Park to the Cromer Road and into the school, their flags displayed by a good breeze which gave maximum colour.

Twelve Scout Groups provided standards for each of their Sections, together with the

light on smaller charities that need more publicity.

The Celebration Service on the chosen theme of ‘Bones’ was led by District Scout Chaplain, The Rev’d Canon Paul Cubitt - Vicar of North 6. Walsham, Edingthorpe, Worstead and Westwick (Benefice) and Priest-inResidence at the Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph, Sheringham and Cromer, The Rev. Tim Bugby (Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham).

The gathering was then treated to a very original presentation by West Runton Scout Group members about their village history which began with the Scouts ‘sailing’ by in a crabber (mounted on a trailer)! They then gave a 2. very animated potted history of the palaeontology behind, and discovery of, the fossilized skeleton of a steppe mammoth, found on the beach after a heavy storm in 1990 ... the Scouts named him ‘Wally’!

The audience sang and cheered as the performance unfolded. Scouts, Cubs and Beavers together with their Leaders all renewed their Scout Promises.

5.

District’s Explorer Scouts and the parade was admirably supported by Gt Yarmouth Sea Cadets, our guest Marching Band, led by S/Lt (SCC) Lydia Chilvers RNR OiC.

The Celebration Service was opened by the new High Sheriff of Norfolk, Clare, the Lady Agnew of Oulton - born in the windmill at Cley and brought up on the coast in east Norfolk, Lady Agnew said she was delighted to be able to return to the area and in particular to Beeston Hall School where her two children, Madeleine, 23, and Edwin, 19, had been pupils. Lady Agnew sees 1. her role for the year as supporting charities and their volunteers, and she will be particularly trying to shine good

Following the National Anthem and the presentation by District Commissioner Paul Henriksen of the St George Flag to 1st Hoveton & Wroxham Group as the exemplary Group of the year, the young people and their Leaders paraded back to their starting point.

15

West Runton Scout Group decided to support Beeston Hall School’s nominated Charity for 2019 and therefore the collection was this year in aid of East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH) for their NOOK Appeal.

The Headmaster, Fred de Falbe, said afterwards “It was lovely to be able to welcome so many to our school to share in what is an important community event. My thanks go to District Commissioner, Paul Henrisen and West Runton Group Scout Leader, Helen Cardani for organising this so brilliantly, and also two long-serving members of the Beeston Hall staff, Mike and Angie Cole – Mike has

Restoration work on the thriving North Walsham and Dilham Canal is gathering pace and everyone is invited to catch up on recent developments at a special evening of short films.

The North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust event, on Wednesday 12 June, will feature three films recording the trial watering of a long-dry section Bacton Wood Lock (Julie Kelleher) of the 19th-century waterway, the arrival and launch of the trust's trip boat Ella II, and a range of recent restoration projects.

Ebridge Mill Lock's top gates, which begins in earnest this summer.

Doors open at The Atrium, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham NR28 9HZ, at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start. Entry is £4 at the door, trust members free.

The evening will also feature displays of finds Canoes on canal and wildlife (North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust) information from the canal, and there will be a chance to buy access maps and other memorabilia.

The films, made by John Parker, of Big Sky Productions, will also bring viewers up to date with footage of balance beams being fitted to the restored Bacton Wood Lock, and preparations for the restoration of

Refreshments, including homemade cakes, will be available and there will be a raffle. Proceeds will help the canal charity continue with its projects which aim to open up even more of the waterway for the benefit of the public and wildlife.

Supporters are currently trying to plug a £9,000 funding gap in the £35,000 cost of restoring Ebridge Mill Lock which has begun thanks to a grant of £26,000 from the EU LEADER Fund. * visit: www.nwdct.org Facebook and Twitter @NWDCT for more information.

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind

On Thursday 2 May the Club went out for their annual spring meal. This year it was held at Vera’s Coffee Shop at Meales Garden Centre at Wayford Bridge.

It was an excellent meal enjoyed by all 26 members. The meal consisted of a choice of roast beef or chicken with roast potatoes and a choice of vegetables with Yorkshire pudding followed by either apple crumble or winter berry trifle.

There were positive comments from all who went and a return visit is imminent.

We would like to thank all the staff who served the meal - we had a great time.

The Club will be back at the Community Centre on Thursday 6 June at 2pm – this will be our poetry day.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

some of the things.

We are at present working on the three beds outside the old Council Offices. One of these is having a rockery and another will have a bird bath planted with sedum in the centre. We have recycled all the tulips from these two sites into the other beds in the town. It is amazing how well the bulbs have all made up. As we did not plant these – we took over from NNDC on 1 April - we did not really know if we could replant, but we are now fairly confident that they will be fine. Look out for them in the spring in the large bed on the bypass and the two large beds on Grammar School Road.

It seems a long time ago that I appealed for help with North Walsham in Bloom, but we have taken over so many new areas in the last year that we do now need to do so.

We start our Spring Planting on 4 June and would ask that anyone who could give us a hand from that date for around two weeks – whatever you can do, probably mornings only and not every day – to contact Marion Lane on 01692 405211.

We are a happy little band and always enjoy each other’s company. You will work with a group of others and will only need to bring some gardening gloves, fork, trowel and a kneeler.

We have had lots of lovely comments regarding our new beds near the Post office, especially the bug box which was built by our own Rob Owers who we are delighted to have with us. All these things are now possible for us as he is very good at what he does. These two areas are not fully planted yet as we must wait for the right time of year to plant

Please come and help us if you can.

A Better Life for Ben

activities most of us take for granted. We have exhausted all non-surgical options and now need to have SDR which will provide a long term solution to manage his spasticity.

Just4Children are fundraising for a life changing operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy), which will give Ben, aged 9 from Sheringham, the chance of a better life.

Ben and his identical twin Alex were born prematurely at 29 weeks. Both boys were seriously ill and Alex passed away after 4 days. Ben remained in Neonatal care for 10 weeks. He was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy at 2 years old.

As he grows the muscles in his legs become tighter, causing discomfort & muscle spasms, hindering his mobility and independence. Ben is now a full-time wheelchair user.

Ben has been accepted for an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital called SDR. This will significantly improve his quality of life by removing the spasticity and helping to manage the discomfort he lives with on a daily basis. It will increase his mobility and allow him the opportunity to perform the daily

Whilst Ben is eligible for the operation it will not be funded by the NHS. A condition of this offer is that we will also need to self-fund a minimum of 2 years intensive physiotherapy, and any equipment required for his rehabilitation.

Please help us to raise £60,000 to allow Ben to live a more comfortable, dignified and independent life.

Thank you.

Businesses invited to sign up for North Norfolk Skills & Careers festival North Norfolk District Council and Paston College are organising event for local students.

Local businesses are being invited to sign up for the North Norfolk Skills & Careers Festival – an interactive exhibition for 13 to 18-year-olds designed to inspire young people for their future careers and increase their awareness of the options open to them.

It follows a successful event last year, when more than 40 organisations exhibited to 600-plus Years 9, 10 and 12 students from local schools.

The festival is being organised by Paston College, Norwich City College and North Norfolk District Council. It will include interactive STEM events, and employers from a range of sectors and industries – including Holkham Estate, Lloyds Bank and

Westover Veterinary Centre – will be at the event.

Businesses based in North Norfolk can exhibit without charge, and it will give them an excellent opportunity to inspire young people to develop skills needed in local businesses and inform them about future jobs that will be available in North Norfolk.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is a great opportunity for local businesses to connect with young people from across the district.

“These young people are our future, so it’s important that we show them the wealth of opportunities that are available to them on their doorstep.”

Corrienne Peasgood, Principal of City College Norwich and Paston College, said “Last year’s

event was a huge success and it was wonderful to see so many local employers, training providers and universities helping young people to decide on their next steps to realise their future ambitions.

“We are delighted to be hosting the North Norfolk Skills & Careers Festival again this year and we’re really looking forward to welcoming all our exhibitors and visitors.”

The festival will be held at Paston College’s Lawn site in Park Lane, North Walsham, on Tuesday 9 July 9.30am-2pm.

Businesses that sign up to attend will be listed on the festival website and their details included in the programme given out at the event.

There will be light refreshments available throughout the day.

Equity Release

Equity Release is a way of releasing the wealth tied up in your property without having to sell it and move into a new home. There are a number of ways that this can be achieved and our experienced advisers are here to help and guide you in making this important decision.

Matthew Hall Dip PFS

Financial Planning Executive Telephone: 01603 275 829

Why should I think about Equity Release?

matthall@hansells.co.uk

You may wish to pay off an outstanding mortgage or other debts, or you might want to top up your income in retirement to help with day to day living costs. Members of your family may need some assistance. Some clients may want to use part of the funds towards; a dream holiday or might need to replace a car. These are just some of the reasons why you may wish to look at Equity Release. Taking out an Equity Release is a lifetime commitment and so should only be entered into after careful considerations and investigation of other options available.

Can I move home? Hansells only use Equity Release providers approved by the Equity Release Council. One of their criteria is that the Equity Release must be fully portable but you should be aware that there will be additional charges incurred if you wish to do so.

Can I release equity in my property if I have an existing mortgage?

You can, but you will need to clear your mortgage first to allow the Equity Release provider to have a first charge over your property. Equity Release can be used to clear your mortgage.

Do I qualify?

If you live in the United kingdom; are over 55 and own your own property worth more than £70,000, then one of our experienced advisers can quickly tell you whether you may be eligible.

What about my family?

It is important to remember that you will be reducing the value of your overall wealth by entering in to an Equity Release scheme. This will affect the value of your estate on death and so may mean that members of your family may receive less than they are expecting. Hansells always encourages you to have an active dialogue with your family so they understand the benefits of the scheme to you. This is only a brief summary. If you have any questions please contact Matthew Hall. Matthew is a specialist in Equity Release, and can also advise on pensions, investments, inheritance tax planning and long term care planning.

Types of Equity Release scheme

There are two main types, lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans. Hansells can advise on both and show you the benefits and disadvantages of each type:• A lifetime mortgage This allows you to release tax free cash from your home whilst continuing to live there. The loan is repaid at your death or if you go in to long term care. Hansells only use providers who are members of the Equity Release Council which means that you will be protected by the “no-negative equity guarantee” which simply means that you will never owe more than the value of your house. You will be able to have the lifestyle that you want with no commitment to monthly repayments. • Home reversion Plan This plan means that you sell all or part of your home for a discounted lump sum. There is no interest to be paid and the share you still own can benefit from a rise in prices. It is generally less flexible than a Lifetime mortgage.

Hansells offer a no obligation first consultation meeting whereby we can advise you if we believe Equity Release to be appropriate for you. Hansells Solicitors is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Equity released from your home will be secured against it. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home.
