Salvation Army Anniversary Celebrations

Continued from front cover... ' The afternoon will see a festival by an 'allcomers' band and songsters made up of members past and present, and led by guest conductors, David Woodrow(band) and Bram Bryant(songsters).

'Although 129 is not a special number, it is still something to thank God for, so we are going to party' says Richard who also adds they will no doubt make even more of a splash next year as they reach 130 years of the Army in the town.

The Salvation Army was first started in 1885 in North Walsham by Captain Fanny Evans and is still going very strong. As well as their Sunday worship meetings they have the 'Army Bears' Parents & Toddlers group,

a lunch club, a friendship club, craft club, weekly coffee morning, charity shop and a very active band and songster brigade. 'All our activities are open to anyone they would benefit, and a warm welcome is there for you' says Richard.

For more information on any of the above you can contact him on 01692 652263 or e-mail richard.durrant@salvationarmy.org.uk

Heinz Proposals For The Closure of Westwick Potato Factory

Heinz has announced proposals for the closure of the Westwick factory which employs 200 people.

The proposed closure comes as our license to manufacture Aunt Bessie’s frozen potato products for the William Jackson Food Group, owner of the Aunt Bessie’s brand, nears its end in April 2015 and will not be renewed.

Heinz is deeply disappointed to have to make this announcement, however, given the decision by the William Jackson Food Group to move to an alternative supplier there is not sufficient manufacturing volume to keep the factory operational. Over the coming weeks Heinz will work with customers to determine the final date of production which is anticipated to be between February and April next year.

The closure proposal is only being made after thoroughly exploring extensive alternatives and options. Heinz fully appreciates and regrets the impact this proposal may have on employees and the local community. It is not a reflection of their commitment or the quality of the Aunt Bessie’s products that have been made at the factory since 1999, or since the site was acquired by Heinz in 2000.

The proposal is subject to a 45 day consultation process with representatives of Heinz Westwick employees. During this period we will consider suggestions made by employee representatives and will continue to explore alternatives to avoid or limit the impact of a potential closure. We will also continue to explore all opportunities to find a buyer for the factory.

Heinz is committed to ensuring all employees are treated in a fair and reasonable manner, and with dignity and respect.

Comment from Norman Lamb :

"This will be a time of great concern and uncertainty for those employed by Heinz in Westwick. I want to meet both with senior managers and with staff urgently to find out if there is anything I can do to help. Heinz must explore fully any option to protect jobs at the factory, and I am determined to make sure they do this."

Our regular rotating Real Ales continues to please both regulars and visitors alike and whilst we tend to concentrate on Norfolk Ales we do occasionally introduce beers from a little further afield, giving our real ales devotes even more of a choice. See you soon, Nathan.

I am delighted to tell you that we have started our very popular ‘Speciality Food Nights’ again and plan to run them every Wednesday until late December. The theme nights will include Italian, Fish, Steak with others themes being added as we go along. Detail of all our theme nights can be found on our web site or call in to the pub and ask for details. We have also decided to bring back

Dear Margaret,

I refer to the articles published recently about Thorpe Market Churchyard.

Although I appreciate the need for conservation where possible, I was very upset on visiting the Church in the summer to find it so untidy, overgrown and dangerous that I couldn’t reach the graves that I wanted to see. I was confirmed and married in St Margaret’s Church and, although I no longer live in the village, I do like to visit some of the graves of friends and family fairly regularly.

Dear Margaret,

It was good to see so many concerned people turn out to the recent public meeting in North Walsham. People are frustrated with repeated attempts to improve the town that have failed to get going.

Many ideas were put forward at the meeting as how to improve the town. Most of these have been talked about or are work in progress. This is one of the problems we have - there are too many groups and committees all trying to do the same thing and not communicating what they are doing. Some are not even meeting or making progress.

I believe that most of these groups should be disbanded and a fresh start must be made with one group dedicated to the town centre improvement.

By all means have some areas of the Churchyard for wild flowers and fauna, but keep most of it well cut and looked after as it has been in the past few years. It is, after all, in the middle of the countryside not a town churchyard where maybe wildlife would need to be encouraged.

Surely the safety and enjoyment of visitors is more important than a few plants. I also find it inappropriate that all the cuttings have now been put into Hazel Grove covering some of the paths, and where ashes have been scattered. Yours sincerely, Johanne Bowles

The Crown Estate seems to have no interest in the Precinct or their responsibilities to the parts they own. It would make sense to hand it over to those who would. But could we trust the district council to do it after failing to support the town on planning and parking issues? I think the town would be better placed to take it on. Now the county council has done a deal with Lidl over the old youth club/children's services building, without any consultation locally or any consideration of the Museum group's expressed interest. It's another blow to North Walsham from the outside. The CAB could do with a new home as well.

Having said all that, we must remember that the town has a lot of hard working people with lots going on and we need to advertise this fact and do better. Let's all work together for a thriving North Walsham. David G Spencer

Labour launches petition against closure of the Heinz factory in North Walsham

The North Norfolk Labour Party has launched a petition against the proposed closure of the Heinz factory in North Walsham.

The 'Jobs Means Heinz' petition was created on the evening of the announcement by Heinz that their Westwick factory would stop production after 70 years because their contract with Aunt Bessie's was ending. The party launched it online at www.jobsmeansheinz.co.uk and have taken it on to the streets of nearby towns.

Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said she was concerned about the impact of over 200 jobs being axed and what impact it would have on the whole community. She has had a teleconference call with a senior manager at Heinz to make the case against the move.

She said "Hundreds of local residents have signed our petition because they can see how this is going to impact on the local community. This is not just about the hundreds of jobs that could go by Christmas, but it is also about the local farmers that supply to the factor and the nearby businesses that need the custom from these workers. The whole community is pulling together to support them and I have been working with the unions to keep up the momentum.

When I spoke with a senior manager at Heinz in Week 1 of the campaign I made it clear what is proposed contradicts Heinz's corporate responsibility. I also expressed my surprise that they would not undertaking an equality impact assessment to assess the economic and social aspects of this closure. Judging by his comments there appears to be flexibility to extend the 45-day consultation to beyond this time-frame which is something we will continue to push.

I am asking all residents to support this cause so please stop and sign the petition at our street stalls in North Walsham or on the website. The strength in numbers so far shows just how important it is."

To sign the petition please visit www.jobsmeansheinz.co.uk. The latest street stalls and campaign events will be listed on the website too. Those requiring paper versions of the petition can write to Thrums, The Hill, Happisburgh, NR12 0PW

News From the Town Council North Walsham market to come alive in the run-up to Christmas In addition to the regular Thursday market, the International Food & Craft Fayre returns to North Walsham on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 December. This will see stallholders from across Europe, wearing traditional costumes, and stalls that could include patisserie, delicatessen, clothing, and crafts. The Town Council is also exploring, alongside the Griffon Area Partnership and Regenerate North Walsham, the possibility of a farmers’ and craft market and street entertainment on Sunday 21 December, hopefully bringing to a successful conclusion a programme of four consecutive days of markets and street entertainment to the centre of North Walsham over the weekend before Christmas. This will be the place to be for fresh produce for the Christmas table and last minute Christmas gift shopping.

Following the Town Council meeting on 30 September and subsequent input on the Council’s Facebook group, the Town Clerk has met with local parent Julie Potter, grandparent Carol O’Connor and Rebecca Matthews from the Griffon Area Partnership to start formulating a proposal for play equipment for Woodville Park. The main theme from early work done by Mrs Potter is equipment that encourages “imagination play”. A proposal will be put to the Council at its next meeting, on Tuesday 28 October that will cover • What kind of equipment we would like to see, covering a range of ages

North Walsham’s annual Christmas Lights switch-on will be held on Saturday 29 November, at 6pm, preceded by a lantern parade and combined Christmas and Farmers’ Market. The Town Crier, Mr Roger Hopkinson, will be out and about on the preceding Thursday, ensuring that market goers don’t forget where they should be on Saturday. He will be accompanied by Miss Teen Norfolk, Gabbi Ryan, who will be doing the honours and throwing the switch for this year’s display. Keep an eye open for further news.

Anyone wishing to submit ideas should contact the Town Clerk. The appalling weather on the day scheduled for the aforementioned meeting – combined with work commitments – meant that parents who had expressed an interest were unable to attend. Arrangements are being made for an open session at the Council Offices – please keep an eye on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1426868304249839/ for further details.

Help Norfolk prevent the spread of Norovirus this winter

Ahead of winter, people in Norfolk are being urged to help prevent the spread of Norovirus. Sometimes known as the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus is the most common stomach bug in the UK. It is highly contagious and can affect people of all ages. Outbreaks of Norovirus in public places, such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools, are common because the virus can survive for several days on surfaces or objects touched by an infected person. To prevent its spread, public health officials are asking anyone with vomiting and diarrhoea – or who has been in contact with someone with

these symptoms – to remain at home and off work for at least 48hrs after their last symptoms. This will help to protect Norovirus from spreading into areas such as schools, care homes and hospitals where it may put vulnerable people at risk. Norovirus is unpleasant but usually something that normally healthy people can recover from at home without the need to see a doctor. There is no specific cure for Norovirus, so anyone affected by the bug should let it run its course. It is usually mild and should not last more than a couple of days. Lucy Macleod, Interim Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said “If you have Norovirus, there are lots of things you can do to help prevent its spread. As well as washing hands regularly with soap and warm water, try to avoid direct contact as far as possible with other people or preparing food for others until at least 48 hours after your symptoms have disappeared. You may still be contagious, even though you no longer have sickness or diarrhoea. “Our priority is to avoid the spread of the virus to GP practices, care homes and hospitals where it may put vulnerable people at risk and affect staff. Norovirus is more serious and even more easily spread among people who are already ill.” Preventing the spread of Norovirus

Norovirus is easily spread. If an infected person doesn't wash their hands before handling food, they can pass the virus on to others. You can also catch it by touching contaminated surfaces or objects. To help prevent the virus spreading, the following measures should be followed: • wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water • don't share towels and flannels • disinfect surfaces that an infected person has touched If you have Norovirus, you may continue to be infectious for a short period after your symptoms stop. You should therefore avoid preparing food and direct contact with others for at least 48 hours after your symptoms disappear. Treating Norovirus If you have Norovirus, following the steps below can help ease your symptoms: • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration • Take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains • If you feel like eating, eat foods that are easy to digest Extra care should also be taken to prevent babies and small children who have diarrhoea and vomiting from dehydrating by giving them plenty of fluids. Each year, it's estimated that between 600,000 and 1 million people in the UK catch Norovirus. Although the illness is sometimes called the ‘winter vomiting bug’ because it's more common in winter, you can catch the virus at any time of the year. This wonderful old book was found in a house on Mundesley Road in North Walsham. The new owners of the house found the book, and glancing through it, also found a photograph of the house itself. Not only are the old photos of the town fascinating, but also the adverts placed, reveal how different the world was in 1927. So to enable others to enjoy this trip into the past of North Walsham, we (Showcase Gallery) are having the book reprinted in its entirety. Crayford & Abbs Offers Free Checks to Help Motorists Get To Grips With Tyre Safety

Crayford and Abbs will be educating drivers about the importance of healthy tyres as part of Tyre Safety Month this October, though they have decided to spread the message through November as well.

Last year (2013) saw the UK suffer the wettest winter on record and the Bodham and Mundesley dealership will be getting behind this annual campaign by TyreSafe – a non profit organisation dedicated to increasing levels of tyre safety - to increase awareness about the importance of correct tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and worn tyres. Statistics show that more than 1,200 casualties occur on the UK’s roads every year as a result of illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres - a number further exacerbated by last year’s extreme wet weather.

Kevin Abbs said: “After a treacherous winter last year, we are glad to be supporting this year’s TyreSafe campaign, focusing on the importance of driving on tyres with adequate tread depth. We’re happy to offer our customers a free tyre safety check in order to make sure they will have maximum control, whatever the weather. It could literally be a matter of life and death. We also have the very latest Digital 4 wheel alignment system

to ensure we offer the very best service.” The tread grooves on a tyre help to clear water from the contact patch between a tyre and the road surface so the vehicle can grip properly. During wet conditions, tyres with a good tread depth can typically clear enough water to fill a bucket in around seven seconds. The more worn or under-inflated a tyre is, the less effective it is at clearing water.

In addition to the increased risk presented by worn tyres, driving on tyres that are below the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each tyre. With this in mind the Bodham and Mundesley dealership is offering a variety of special offers on tyres throughout October and November. The Tyre Safety Month is supported by safety organisations such as the Highways Agency, the Chief Fire Officers Association and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, as well as Road Safety GB.

To find out more about the special offers available, or for more information on how to get your tyres checked, visit either Bodham or Mundesley now or call 01263588160 / 01263720808.

ruled over by a terrifying Miss Trunchbull aka Headmaster Martin Castle. Pupils (and staff) were invited to come to school dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character for the day with lessons following a Roald Dahl theme. A great day was had by all and all money raised went to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.

Help Lessen Loneliness

There have been several articles in the media lately creating an awareness of the loneliness that can be experienced by the elderly population. Current statistics reveal that up to 17% of the elderly have contact with a friend, family or neighbour less than once per week. This can have a detrimental effect on both physical and mental health.

It is well known that there is a large elderly population here in North Norfolk, and we, at Age UK North Norfolk Befriending Service, receive many requests for a volunteer to visit and brighten up someone’s day. Our volunteers are truly inspirational – they give up their own time to visit people on a regular basis, sometimes several hours per week, providing companionship and support.

Befriending Services such as ours have been proved to be effective ways of helping to combat loneliness and isolation, and we have had very positive feedback from our volunteers who visit, and from the elderly they befriend.

Full Network Coverage for Mobiles?

Ann Steward, the former Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member responsible for Economic Development and now the Prospective Parliamentary Conservative Candidate for North Norfolk, has welcomed moves by the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council to push forward with plans to allow mobile phone users to access full network coverage across Norfolk.

service and feel all the more isolated. It has far-reaching implications, on our health and welfare, on our competitiveness, on our learning opportunities and on Norfolk's attractiveness as a place to live, work and do business. It is a Conservative priority to enable mobile phone users to “roam” across networks to access the best coverage and I hope to drive

this forward at the earliest opportunity. I am passionate about releasing Norfolk’s economic potential by improving essential infrastructure; from upgrading phone and broadband provision to modernising roads and rail services.”

In June, the Government announced plans to force mobile phone operators to share their networks to eliminate mobile “not-spots”. These plans will follow on from similar schemes in parts of Europe where governments and even the European Commission promote passive infrastructure sharing among mobile operators. On Monday the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council will present a motion calling on all of Norfolk’s MPs to lobby together for the earliest possible enactment of the Government’s proposals.

Ann Steward, who was a driving force in the County Council’s investment in the broadband upgrade, currently underway across Norfolk, thinks improvements in mobile phone coverage go hand in hand with better broadband. In recent months Ann has continued to campaign for better digital services for Norfolk and recently took part in a ministerial delegation led by George Freeman MP with the Minister for the Digital Economy, Ed Vaizey MP.

Ann said, “I know how many people and businesses are frustrated by patchy or non-existent mobile signal in parts of Norfolk; it's one of the biggest issues facing our county. The problem is particularly bad in North Norfolk where rural communities suffer very poor mobile

Council Gallery Hosts Exciting Debut Exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) public art gallery is hosting a collection of cleverly engineered amalgamations of old and new photographs by local artist, James Fox, until 14 November.

Featuring an array of views across the county and country, this interactive display entitled ‘Step into the Past – the Time Travel Exhibition’, allows the viewer to quite literally move from the present day into the depths of the past. Over the course of several months, James travelled to the locations captured in photographs taken more than 100 years ago to recapture the scene today. Through the use of lens, the pictures are painstakingly processed as a 3D morphing print showing the two worlds colliding with captivating results. James studied Photography at Paston College, taking a particular interest in stereo (3D) photography and rephotography (the art of recapturing an old photo), undertaking a final project on the theme of transition. He presents a series of local, regional and national locations and people, fusing the past and present in an engaging format.

NNDC is delighted to present this commercial debut collection of prints to the public prior to the ‘Time Travel Exhibition’ at The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in November. Prices range from small prints at £12 through to larger framed pictures at £50-80, with commissions available on request. For more information visit www.facebook.com/timetravelimages NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm; Wednesday 10am – 5pm; Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm. The Hare & Moon Gallery Showcases East Anglian Artists Claire Knight, a north Norfolk paper cut artist, opened The Hare & Moon Gallery at Alby Crafts and Gardens this summer to showcase her own work and that of other East Anglian artists.

The gallery will be hosting its first exhibition 'Art in Miniature' from Saturday 22 November. The exhibition will feature new work by Georgia Dodson and limited edition wood engravings by Andy English. Georgia's work is strongly influenced by a tradition of seventeenth century northern European forest floor paintings. For this collection Georgia has been working 'plein air' in oil on copper sheets measuring only 10cm square. She seeks to re-engage the viewer with the detail and the com-

plexity of life and decay on the forest floor. “The vast history of wooded landscapes is impressive in itself, a definitive root to many cultures, yet perhaps overlooked and forgotten in the present,” explains Georgia. “My paintings seek to re-engage viewers with wooded landscapes by addressing contrasts between the perceived 'wildwood' of the past and the small pockets of ancient woodland remaining today, raising questions about human connections with nature.” Andy English, a wood engraver from Little Downham near Ely, is renowned for his meticulous prints, which he describes as 'unashamedly small scale, rural and autobiographical'. All of his work starts off as a detailed drawing, which is engraved into a woodblock, often using a magnifying glass to achieve the fine detail he wants. He then uses his nineteenth century Albion press to print limited editions of

Southrepps Bowls Success

Southrepps Bowls Club is a small village club with about thirty members who for a long time have never made much of a dent in the North Norfolk bowls scene.

This last season we decided to try and really compete in just one league (the North Norfolk Afternoon Mixed League) in which twelve teams compete from the towns and villages in Norfolk. The result was, we won sixteen games, drew four and only lost two games. We won all our home games.

We did this by using every last ounce of talent available at the club and thought long and hard about which position to play them in. The unusual thing was that we played every game with restricted sight bowlers (two) unusual in that I have never (in twelve years of bowling) come across restricted sight bowlers regularly playing in sighted leagues and with such effectiveness.

In addition we competed at the Potter Heigham Bowls Tournament and won the B&E High Cup and came runners up in the NANSA Evening Two Wood Knockout Cup.

We intend to try and build on this success for the coming season so if you are a bowler looking for another club or someone who would like to start bowling come and give us a try.

We have regular Barbeques throughout the season and are developing a blossoming social side to the club.

NORTH NORFOLK GHOST STORIES FOR HALLOWEEN

As we approach Halloween this is a good time to remember that there are hundreds of ghost stories set in North Norfolk, some of which are much too close for comfort!

All Saints Church, Beeston Regis

In the churchyard of All Saints there are two granite boulders, one is used to cover a grave and the other rests beside the north wall. The stones were originally each side of a pathway leading to a farmhouse in the grounds of the adjoining, ruined, Beeston Priory.

A local tale says that in the late 1930s, a farmer named James Reynolds often drove his horse and cart along this pathway. Several times, at sunset, a hooded grey ghostly figure leapt out from behind one of the boulders and tried to grab the horse’s reins before vanishing. The farmer decided that when he died this stone should be placed on his grave, in an attempt at ‘laying’ the apparition. James Reynolds died in 1941 and, in accordance with his wishes the boulder was put on his grave, his wife Ann Elizabeth was also interred there when she died in 1967. This boulder is engraved with both their names.

Black Shuck

There are many stories about Black Shuck along the North Norfolk Coast and many go back hundreds of years. Black Shuck or Old Shuck as he is sometimes known is a large black dog with fiery red eyes as big as saucers. According to the tales the eyes will burn right into your soul if you look into them. Round its neck is a piece of chain that clanks and rattles as it haunts its way along the coast from Sheringham to Cromer. On stormy nights when the wind whistled around the chimneys children were told that if they did not sleep ‘Old Shuck will come and get you’. It has been suggested that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle heard this legend whilst staying at Cromer Hall and that this may have inspired him to write ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.

The Shrieking Pits

In North Norfolk there are many shallow pits in the fields which were once thought to be prehistoric dwellings. In fact they are early medieval iron workings. A few are visible in the parish of Aylmerton in the fields just north and west of Gresham Cross and these are known as the Shrieking Pits. The tall phantom of a woman in white is said to wander around these pits, sometimes peering into them, but all the while wringing her

hands and moaning and shrieking.

When the pits were thought to be prehistoric, she was believed to be the ghost of a Stone Age Woman. Now some say that she is the spirit of a mother looking for her baby who had been murdered by her jealous husband who was convinced that it wasn’t his child. After burying the baby in the pit west of Aylmerton Church, he went back and murdered his wife.

A similar story is about the ghost of a woman in a ‘winding sheet’ who rises out of the ground and roams around Weybourne.

North Walsham Church

In the olden days, there was a dare for townsfolk in North Walsham leaving the White Swan pub to run around the church backwards three times, after which it was said that organ sounds could be heard coming from the empty church.

When a man got on the shoulder of a friend to look through the church window he saw ghostly figures walking up the aisle towards the altar. Sleep well on All Hallows’ Eve.

NEW 2014 SIR WILLIAM PASTON SCHOLARS RECEIVE THEIR AWARDS

In 2006 the Trustees of the Paston Foundation created a scholarship scheme to mark Paston’s 400th birthday, bearing the name of our founder, Sir William Paston.

This year 25 scholarships worth £500 were awarded to new gifted and talented students who achieved a minimum of 4A* grades at GCSE. This was significantly more than the 20 awarded last year and reflects the quality of achievement in our local partner schools and the fact each year we get more able and talented students choosing to study at Paston Sixth Form College.

The scholarship certificates were given out to students at a special celebration lunch by Peter Stibbons, Chairman of the Paston Foundation and Corporation member. The Principal Kevin Grieve said “there is a very long tradition at Paston celebrating student success and encouraging everyone to work hard to achieve high quality academic outcomes. The scholarships recognise

outstanding student ability but challenge us all to have ambition and high aspirations. This ethos has not changed since Sir William Paston founded the school in 1606”. The scholars receiving certificates this year were:

Beth Adams Annie Baldwin Freya Boswell Catherine Broster Chloe Chandler Fran Clabon Stan Clarke Grace Farman Hope Fincham Hannah German Phoebe Hagan Lucy Harrison Chloe Higenbottam Lucy Hutchin Megan Kett-Brodie Jake Lomax Jake Morris Hazel Needham Nathan Price Georgie Rowe Ciara Simpson Ruth Sloper Jamie Spooner Beth Willoughby Catrina Wooldridge

Council welcomes announcement of proposed investment in North Walsham

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has welcomed an announcement from British pub chain, JD Wetherspoon of a proposed investment in North Walsham town centre. Wetherspoon approached NNDC with an expression of interest its New Road offices, currently partly occupied by North Walsham Town Council. The chain is looking to open a pub with a restaurant to attract a broad range of customers. It is expected that the investment would result in the creation of 45 to 50 new jobs in the town. A formal conditional offer was received from Wetherspoon at the end of September, details of which have been shared with local District Councillors and outlined to North Walsham Town Council recently. A formal report to NNDC’s Cabinet detailing the proposal is being prepared for discussion at its next meeting on 3 November, which will include relocation options for existing tenants. Any formal proposal will be subject to the normal planning and licensing approval process. The proposal outlined to the Council to date involves retention of the listed council offices building, a proposed extension which will include a large feature bar, seating area, kitchen and customer toilets, outside seating and retention of listed barn structures as bin and beer stores. JD Wetherspoon spokesman, Eddie Gershon said, “We are looking at the site in North Walsham. We would be keen to open up a pub in the town. “If the plans come to fruition we would look to invest £1.6 million on the development project and create up to 50 new full and part time jobs. We also believe that a Wetherspoon pub in the town would act as a catalyst for further investment by other businesses”. NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, Rhodri Oliver said, “We welcome this proposed investment in the heart of North Walsham’s town centre. We are committed to looking at how to make the best use of all our assets and using them to help us in supporting and encouraging the long-term prosperity and success of towns such as North Walsham. I see it as a positive step in bringing people to the town centre. NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick said, “This exciting £1.6 million investIn20 association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

ment proposal promises to create up to 50 jobs for local people which will be a huge boost for the town and will help re-energise the town centre. North Norfolk District Council believes this will help attract other well-known retail brands to consider investing in this historic market town. “This positive proposal from a well-respected national business is a vote of confidence in North Walsham and has the potential to bring new life to the town centre and bring additional footfall to existing businesses. The news is particularly welcome given the recent announcement by Heinz that it may have to close its Westwick factory nearby, with the potential loss of 200 jobs”.

Stuart Richards was awarded first place in the Humorous Speech Contest for his cleverly entertaining and original story – ‘The Extraordinary Tale of the Queen and her Bed’. ‘Competitions are always a challenge’, said Stuart, ‘but they do help to focus and hone speaking skills and gain experience in speaking to larger and varied audiences’ . Clive Willet won the Table Topics Contest, speaking on the subject - ‘Are DIY projects to be applauded or avoided?’Table Topics, unlike prepared speeches, require the contestant to speak impromptu with no prior warning of the subject.‘Being able to speak ‘off the cuff’ is a really useful skill to have, whether in business or everyday situations’, Clive said.

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION

THE NORTH WALSHAM TIMES WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!

North Walsham Times 457 October 25th 2014

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

A further 17 kittens have come into care since our last article including one dear little girl called Duchess that came in from a barn and has sadly had to have her tail amputated due to a nasty puncture wound which had become infected. She also has a nasty bite wound on her leg and is still requiring treatment for this. This lucky little kitten has already incurred heavy vet bills even before she is old enough to be vaccinated. The cats in the colony mentioned last time are not turning up in time to get to the vets in the morning so we have to rethink our plans and consider holding them overnight in a pen. We do need to catch them all soon, before they have any more kittens!

Having recently highlighted the work undertaken by our fosterers we would like to recognise the work undertaken by our other volunteers, wit4hout whom the branch would have difficulty functioning. These include the ladies who come and help clean the cats at Dilham. They turn up in all weathers and, apart from cleaning, they also socialise the cats in care there.

Some volunteers help by taking cats to the vets either for a consultation or, in the case of the feral cats, to be neutered, once trapped. If Your Dog has Epilepsy, a New Book by local author Gill Carrick could help

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from frequent seizures - and just why these happen isn’t always clear. But generallyspeaking, a brain tumour, a head injury or a reaction to a vaccine or some chemicals, is at the root of the problem. Genes have a role to play too. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions among our furry friends with as many as one in every 20 dogs affected, to varying degrees. It usually develops before a hound’s 5th birthday and can affect dogs of any age or breed. On the good news front, with the right veterinary care; a good (low-fat) diet and complementary therapies, most epileptic dogs can live a relatively normal life. My Dog has Epilepsy, but lives life to the full – a practical guide for owners, contains expert veterinary advice; touching true stories and glorious colour photos. lovely cards to sell and these are proving very popular in some of our veterinary practices and in various other venues.

Some of our volunteers also multitask and we applaud them all for all their hard work, not only with the cats, but also raising the money to ensure we can continue with the work that we do.

Beana, one of our older kittens, just wait- If you are looking for a cat or ing for someone to give her a home kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. Osteoarthritis in Cats

Most people recognise the sign of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs but did you know it is also found in cats? Due to the stoic nature of cats and their ability to hide pain, OA can go unnoticed or be put down to general ‘old age’. Bony changes in the arthritic joint appear as rough surfaces, when these surfaces rub together they cause pain and inflammation.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

OA occurs when cartilage that cushions the joint gets worn away, this may be the result of injury – an old break or dislocation or mechanical ‘wear and tear’ as the animal gets older. It can be primary, which means no other problems are present & is due to ‘wear and tear’ of old joints, or it can be secondary which means there is some other factor to consider – for example an old injury. Obesity in cats, though not a primary cause of OA will certainly exacerbate symptoms if left un-managed.

Signs of Osteoarthritis

Reluctance to jump up or down onto sofa/bed etc, difficulty getting in and out of cat flap, difficulty using litter tray and stiffness or lameness in legs to name a few. Diagnosis - If your cat is displaying any of the signs mentioned above it may well be suffering from OA, to enable us to make a diagnosis you will need to bring your cat in to see one of our vets. Once we have a diagnosis you will be referred to one of our nurses for an arthritis clinic. How you can help at home - There are many things you can do to help your cat’s mobility. Such as: Provide a soft padded bed at floor level, prop open the cat flap or leave a door open to allow easy access to outside and provide a litter tray, with at least 1 low side, indoors so your cat doesn’t have to go outside. Diet and supplements - There are many supplements on the market for arthritic conditions, Glucosamine and Chondroitin are amongst the most effective. These along with any dietary changes required will be discussed at the Arthritis Clinic by the nurse. Medication - Once diagnosis has been made, it is most likely your cat will be prescribed an anti-inflammatory pain killer. This comes in a liquid form and is highly palatable to cats; this will be discussed by the Vet at your initial appointment. For the full article on OA in cats visit our website www.miramarvets.co.uk We will be holding an evening talk about Osteoarthritis in Cats at Miramar Vets, Sheringham on the 12th November at 7.30pm. North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind After a long absence due to illness I am glad to be back corresponding for our Club and to catch up on all the good things that have happened while I have been away.

The August meeting was once again entertained by a great favourite of the members, Tony Bryant, who sang a medley of songs from the 50/60s and also some old favourites that the members were able to sing along to. There was a double event in September apart from the regular meeting, The Club put on a special event which was a bit different from our normal summer outing – a Fish & Chip lunch was served to our members with a trifle sweet - a big thanks goes to Mr Lam of Station Road Fish shop who had the job of dishing up all those fish & chips and also to everybody that helped to make it such a success. When the club met for its October meeting it was a bit disappointing

as owing to an injury to his hand our entertainer was not able to make an appearance. A game of bingo always comes to the rescue and although it doesn't please everybody, we certainly had a laugh. It was also the Club’s 69th birthday which is a long time to keep a club running. The fundraising has also been good - the Sainsburys collections raised £294.46 and our raffles & second hand stall totalled £160.

Next month will be our annual bake off where we all try to bake cakes to raise more funds for the club.

Over the course of the last two years the club has been dwindling in numbers due to members moving away or bereavement. The last thing we want is for this club to close especially with our 70th birthday coming up next year so if there is anyone who would like to join the club, please do come along to the Community Centre on the first Thursday of every month at 2pm.

North Walsham & District Historical Society

The late, Great Yarmouth Fishing Industry was the subject of a very amusing October talk by Simon Partridge.

The herring season ran from late September to Christmas. Scottish steam drifter boats would use long lines of net to bring in the herrings. It was hard, physical work and no women were included in the crews. Not that they were missing much. There were no toilets on board; it was either over the side ... or down to the engine room to make use of the coal shovel and the furnace!

But where there was a fleet, the Scottish fisher girls duly followed and were given the job of

North Walsham Photographic Group

gutting and packing the herrings quay-side. Each year thousands of girls arrived and they were boarded in houses along the Yare River; children were evicted from their bedrooms (and made to sleep in sheds) to accommodate the influx of girls and then were given their rooms back as a Christmas present!

Prior to 1939, 93% of the catch was exported to Russia. However, World War Two ended the Yarmouth herring fishing industry as Russia invented their own huge factory ships and the British demand for herring fell away as tastes changed.

As Simon wryly pointed out, we may never

To view all these images, visit the Group’s website at www.nw-pg.co.uk.

The third quarterly competition of the North Walsham Photographic Group was held at the end of September.

The competition was split into 2 sections : the digital images were, as usual, thematic, and the prints were open, allowing members free choice. Each member was allowed to submit two in each category; the number of entries exceeded 35 in both categories, and the judge, Derek Leak, was rigorous in his scrutiny, commenting precisely on the technical points, as well as the overall composition. The theme for this competition was ‘Man and Machine’ and the ideas submitted ranged from traditional heavy machinery to racing vehicles. Four images were

have had fish fingers if not for the demise of the herring industry. To try and revitalise the herring industry in the early 1950s, the first fish fingers were made of herring and tested down on the South Coast. White fish would be much better was the resounding verdict. So the cod fish finger was born ... or “battered cod pieces” as they were originally going to be called! Our next meeting is at 7.30pm, Thursday 6 November, in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham. Our speaker will be Deborah Nicholson talking about “Milling and Wind Energy through the Ages.” Visitors are warmly welcomed. Diana Velhagen

Our thanks to our judge, Derek Leak, who stepped in at the last moment. The theme for the 4th quarterly is ‘At Work’, to be judged in December. Two North Norfolk sisters have both finished as runners-up in their respective categories at the Norfolk County Junior Table Tennis Championships. The event was held at Catton Grove Primary School and saw Carrie Last’s feat of reaching the final in the under fifteens equalled by Zara Last in the under elevens. The titles were won by Ella Rose Barnard and Mollie Patterson in the under elevens and fifteens respectively. Local MP gets behind food counter colleagues

Last month Norman Lamb, local MP for North Norfolk got behind the counter in North Walsham Sainsbury’s store to learn more about preparing food and serving local customers.

Mr Lamb was welcomed by Lindsay Smith at the meat/fish/hot food counters. During their time on the job they covered the importance of safety and hygiene while preparing food as well as getting a few tips from trained colleagues on how to fillet a fish and how to top and finish a pizza for the oven. The day was designed to highlight the various career opportunities retail offers, and the training available to colleagues. Mr Lamb said “I’ve had a great day accompanying Lindsay. It’s interesting to see how passionate the colleagues are, and meeting local customers.”

Counter Manager Lindsay, adds “It’s not every day you have your local MP in to work with you – I really enjoyed sharing some of the skills I’ve learnt and having an extra pair of hands.” This year Sainsbury’s was awarded its second consecutive Gold Investors in People accreditation for supporting, developing and motivating its colleagues. Over 22,000 colleagues who work on the fresh food

counters, bakeries and cafés have received job-specific City & Guildsaccredited training in the seven Food Colleges across the UK.

They receive in depth training from a team of experts that covers product knowledge, knife/preparation skills and practice sales, customer service and merchandising. Further coaching skills are taught to ensure the training can be cascaded and passed on when colleagues return to store.
