Church Plans Christmas Spectacular Concert

Continued from front cover... ' Whilst the traditional sound of a lone boy's voice singing Once in Royal David's City is the starting horn of Christmas for many, this concert will also feature a large selection of Christmas carols for all to rousingly join in with, readings from a wide selection of sources including Charles Dickens and local poetry, and an eclectric variety of popular choral works old and new, including a new composition especially for the concert by composer Laurence Caldecote and settings of popular songs including 'White Christmas' and 'The Snowman.'

David Ballard said ‘This concert enables two of the jewels of North Walsham, its Church with the famous ruined tower and its choir to be enjoyed by all. We strongly encourage anyone to come to this concert to share in the joys of Christmas, whether they are a seasoned attender or whether it would be a first time experience. I would really like to encourage the townspeople and beyond to come and share this celebration with us, and also the hopeful completion of work to the churches tower’.

Churches Together in North Walsham Christmas Lunch

I know it is early to be thinking of this or any other Christmas event but we are already planning this year’s lunch on Christmas Day. All that we ask is do you live in North Walsham and will you be on your own on Christmas Day? If the answer is yes why not consider joining us at the Community Centre for a traditional Christmas lunch which is served at 1pm and will finish off with tea and Christmas cake and listening to the Queens speech. The lunch is organized by Churches Together in North Walsham, free of charge, supported financially by local charities and businesses. You do not have to be a member of a church to be more than welcome. If you would like more information or an application form, if you have not previously attended, please write to Mr. R. Vincent 14 Marshgate North Walsham NR28 9EE or email Roger.vincent@hotmail .co.uk

Dear Margaret,

I help to run a club in Stalham called the Tuesday Group. It is mainly for people who have suffered from mental illness, but everyone is welcome to join.

We meet from 11 am to 2 pm at Stalham Youth Club, Recreation Road, Stalham every Tuesday. One of our members cooks us a two course lunch and tea and coffee are readily available.

The first visit is free, but after that we pay £4 each to cover the cost of food and the rent for the premises. There are also five pool tables, which are free to use.

If you don't have any transport, we have Chris in Trimingham, Gary in Catfield or Daniel or myself in North Walsham who will gladly give you a lift.

Just come along or give me a ring for further details on 01692 402038 or mobile 07919 865413. Richard Baker North Walsham

Dear Margaret,

As someone who was involved in trying to bring monthly cinema to North Walsham, I appreciate The Atrium and the efforts being made. We failed due to lack of support and vandalism when films were being shown at St Nicholas Room.

To have a comfortable and roomy cinema/theatre in the town is a great asset and deserves to be supported by adults as well as the young. Yours sincerely, Nancy Arie

Blueberry Research Study The Nutrition Department at the Norwich Medical School (University of East Anglia) is conducting is looking to recruit overweight men and women aged 50-75 years to take part in their research study to see if every day blueberry consumption for 6 months improves health. They are particularly interested in markers of health related to the development of heart dis-

St Nicholas’ Church

ease and type 2 diabetes and hope that a positive study outcome would help to give better advice to the public about how to reduce their risk of developing these diseases. This study is ethics committee approved.

They will be recruiting volunteers until January 2016 and all study visits will be done at the convenience of the participants. Travel expenses to and from the University will be reim-

bursed and participants will receive an inconvenience payment based on the amount of their study involvement.

If any readers wish to know more about the study please contact the Department either by email circles-study@uea.ac.uk or telephone 01603 592424.

The Christmas Family Workshop in honour of St Nicholas takes place in the Church as part of the North Walsham Street Fair and Christmas Lights event on Saturday 29 November starting at 3pm.

The church is open to welcome families to explore the Parish Church, for the children to take part in all the activities, to meet a special guest who reminds us of St Nicholas himself. Also another Teddy Bear Zip Wire opportunity from the tower scaffolding will take place after the Market Place lights have been switched on, so bring your teddies!

The children prepare the “Banner” for the St Nicholas Boy Bishop Service which takes place on Sunday 7 December at 10am. This is the ancient tradition when one of our choir boys leads the Service and preaches the Sermon.

Also at 4 pm on Sunday 7 December there will be a quiet reflective Service called “Cloth for the Cradle” drawing on the worshipping tradition of the Iona Community.

Advent Sunday on 30 November is when we start to prepare for Christ’s coming again and there will be a special Candlelit Advent Carol Service at 4.00 pm which will focus on the theme of hope and ask “What does Advent Hope mean for North Walsham?”

Posada is an opportunity for you to welcome to your home the lovely knitted figures representing Joseph and Mary and the donkey as they make their journey round the Parish, staying overnight in a different home each day. Do call into church after 16 November and sign your name on the list if you would like to participate. Starting on Advent Sunday this can be experienced by people of all ages, families, or those living alone, organisations, schools, pubs, care homes or households.

All the Advent and Christmas Services are detailed in the November December Edition of the Parish Magazine “Light”. Available in Church, it gives details of the Schools Carol Services, the Pram Service Nativity, the Festival of Lessons and Carols and the Christmas Services. Cromer’s New Years Day Fireworks Photography Competition set to return

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Fireworks committee has announced the return of their annual photography competition to mark the 16th year of the annual display which began in 2000.

After the success of the competition last year, which saw over 100 entries, it is hoped that everyone from artists and community groups to ambitious individuals will enter the competition and get involved in this fabulous event. The photography competition is open to all photographers aged 17+ and the brief for entrants is ‘Cromer Fireworks 2015’. Photographers are invited to come along to Cromer on New Year’s Day, bring their camera, photograph the event and get creative. The winner of the competition will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2016 New Years Day Firework event as well as use in other promotional material. Local electrical retailer Hughes Plus, Cromer are sponsoring the event for the third year running and are offering the winner the latest Samsung 40” led TV worth £400.

Simon Morton, Manger of Hughes Plus in Cromer, said “We are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to support such a spectacular local event as the New Year’s Day Firework display. We felt the prize should reflect

this and encourage ‘snappers’ to get snapping and produce some great local images!”

Having just undergone a revamp, the former Bennetts store in Cromer, now features a new suspended mezzanine floor to hold lots more stock in branch. This means customers can shop in branch and, indeed on Hughes’ click’n’collect website facility knowing that the store will almost certainly have the item in branch for one hour collection.

the team and are always pleased to offer their expert knowledge in guiding customers through the process of making that all important electrical purchase. Come visit us on the Holt road this festive season.” Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said “the annual New Year's Day Fireworks have been capturing people's imagination for 15 years, every year we see hundreds of fabulous photographs of the event in the press and online. We thought it would be great to continue the photography competition to inspire more people and to capture this fantastic event. We are looking for photographs that really capture the spirit of the event." This year the committee is also launching a poetry competition for children, details of which will be announced soon.

For further information and the competition rules please visit www.cromertown.org or email fireworks@cromertown.org. The competition entry deadline is Wednesday 14 January 2015. Cromer’s New Year’s Day Fireworks will take place at 5pm off Cromer Pier on 1 January 2015.

Council pledges support to Heinz Westwick factory workers

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is continuing talks with Heinz management at its Westwick factory near North Walsham to offer support and assistance in a bid to secure continued employment at the site. Leader of the Council, Tom FitzPatrick, together with Chief Executive, Sheila Oxtoby and District Councillor for Westwick, Glyn Williams, met with Heinz management shortly after the announcement of proposals for the closure of the Westwick factory near North Walsham which employs 200 people was made.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said: “We made contact with representatives from Heinz to organise a meeting as a matter of urgency to establish how we can offer the best support to those affected. Steps are being taken by our Economic Development team to make sure that there is strong support in place and that guidance and advice is readily available for local workers and their families during what will be an extremely difficult time. We appreciate the work being done by Heinz to find alternative uses for the site.”

Support available will include access to training, jobsearch and careers advice and practical assistance with business start-ups for those considering self-employment and will be offered through the Council’s ‘Learning for Everyone’ support service and Enterprise North Norfolk, a business start-up support programme jointly

funded by NNDC and Norfolk County Council.

An offer to Heinz has been made for ways in which financial assistance can be provided for prospective investors to help secure the long-term future of the site and the prospects of those facing unemployment. Working with Norfolk County Council and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, advice concerning access to funding from the ‘Growing Business Fund’ and the ‘Regional Growth Fund’ was given to Heinz for any enquiries they may receive regarding a purchase of the site or potential inward investment. Advice will also be available to potential investors concerning planning matters, environment health issues and workforce recruitment.

Russell Wright, NNDC Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “It is an absolute that we will support and help develop whatever opportunities may arise for future investment in the Westwick site to ensure the long-term prosperity and economic growth of North Walsham and its surrounding area.

“We are committed to working with Heinz to ensure the best possible outcome for staff, potential investors and the people of North Walsham.”

A Musical Festive Treat!

The Cromer Orchestra will be performing a selection of popular festive music at Cromer Parish Hall (opposite Boots) on Thursday 11 December at 7.30pm. The programme will include Christmas favourites, traditional carols and a special guest appearance by Southrepps based Cantamus Choir, singing music by John Rutter and John Taverner. This will be the first time that the orchestra and choir have performed together, so come along and show your support for what promises to be a thoroughly

enjoyable evening.

Tickets are priced at £5 for adults/£2.50 for under 18s and include refreshments. Tickets are either available on the door, or in advance from Cromer Tourist Information Centre or Kirkhams Hardware store.

New players are always welcome to join the orchestra, particularly string and brass players. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at The Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand starting at 7pm.

A ‘wheelie’ big thank you!

During the week beginning 13 October the children from Little Nick’s Nursery and Reception at St Nicholas House School, took part in a ‘Wheelathon’ to raise money for new ride-on toys for the Nursery children. A circuit was marked out in the playground by the course director, Mrs. Saunders, using high visibility cones. Two of the older children acted as control cars to demonstrate the route and the techniques needed to stay on the course. The two marshals, Mrs Higgins and Mrs Edmunds, attempted to keep the traffic flowing in one direction and counted the laps, however, some of the younger ones adopted the high risk strategy of driving into the on-coming traffic which resulted in a few interventions by the marshals! Lots of fun was had by all the children and everyone had the opportunity to use wheels. There were vehicles for all levels of driving capability; trikes, scooters, a bee to ride on and even a pram to push! There were a few pit stops for a change of vehicle, but no mechanics or emergency vehicles were deployed. All sponsorship deals were gratefully received and we will be letting them know what new vehicles will soon be gracing the tarmac at St. Nicholas House School.

For more details please contact Norman Moor on 01263 511600.

Cantamus are a mixed voice, non-auditioned choir who rehearse in Southrepps church on a Thursday evening from 7.30-9.30 under the direction of David Ballard. The choir is always looking to recruit new singers, particularly in the alto, tenor and bass sections; for further details please email davidballard@hotmail.co.uk

BE PART OF NORFOLK & NORWICH OPEN STUDIOS 2015

One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country has announced its dates for 2015 and artists can now apply to take part. The Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (NNOS) scheme is a 16-day county-wide celebration and a key event in Norfolk’s visual arts calendar.

Annually drawing visitors in excess of 32,000 the scheme, which was established in 1994, is run by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in collaboration with local artists. Each year hundreds of artists across the region invite the public into their private studios to reveal where and how they work.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival artistic director William Galinsky said “The Festival is proud that the Open Studios scheme works with so many talented artists in a part of the world that has long and also for visitors to see artwork as it happens away from the traditional gallery spaces. Following on from last year’s record year, with the continued support of Wex Photographic, we hope to attract even more visitors in 2015.

Artist Elizabeth Potter who creates three dimensional sculpture exhibited her work as part of the 2014 Open Studios scheme from her workplace in Saxthorpe, north Norfolk.

She said “I enjoyed my first Open Studios experience, met lots of lovely people, other artists and made contacts.

This year’s Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios grew with a record 585 artists and 480 school children participating across 272 venues. Art lovers and curious first timers alike were attracted to the scheme with 20 Art Trails and countless demonstrations, events and workshops by participating artists.

Nigel Barnett at work in his studio

Research by the scheme’s organisers has shown that on average each participating artist or collective received around 120 visitors. In addition, half of visitors this year ate out at a local restaurant or

cafe as part of their Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios experience and 38% also visited local shops.

Following a hugely successful inaugural sponsorship in 2014, Norwich based company Wex Photographic will be supporting the scheme again in 2015.

Emma van Deventner, Events Manager at Wex Photographic said “Wex Photographic is very proud to be supporting the unique NNOS programme again in 2015. We were delighted with its success last year and we are excited to be working alongside the Festival team to further raise the profile of this important and diverse event. We are all about supporting the artist and we cannot think of a better way to do so than in our home county through NNOS.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2015 will take place between 23 May and 7 June 2015. Artists wanting to take part can apply online at www.nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is ÂŁ100 for individual artists and ÂŁ280 for groups of artists and includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of 35,000.

Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, posters, postcards and the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2015. The deadline for 2015 applications is Friday 5 December 2014.

NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST

The Trust hosted an invitation only meeting at the Honing Village Hall on Thursday 6 November. The meeting opened with the Vice Chairman, Chris Black, welcoming everybody present, accompanied with a hot beverage and biscuits.

The Archivist of the East Anglian Waterways Association Ltd, Ivan Cane, then presented another of his brilliant illustrated talks about the canal, both past and present together with the future plans for its use. The many advantages of a restored canal were touched on, particularly in the line of economic benefits and the huge beneficial effect it will have on nature in the area. An illustrated talk is very fine but there is nothing like seeing the real thing and so a conducted tour was made by visiting firstly Briggate Mill Pond and lock, which is currently being re-cleared, followed by Ebridge Mill Pond and lock. Some attendees were heard to say that they did not realise that so much has already been done towards the restoration of the canal. The morning’s weather was the best that could be hoped for in November with clear sunshine and just a slight breeze as the party went further to visit Bacton Wood Lock, which has virtually been rebuilt together with the top lock gates being manufactured and installed. This lock is at the end of the current, ‘dry’ part of the canal, caused by the diversion of the canal water, through a man-made hole in the canal bank, to feed the Sewage Works at Spa Common back in the 50s. The Sewage Works have now ceased to operate as such and therefore the extra water is no longer required there – but it is needed in the canal. The hole in the Canal bank has been sealed, with a sluice gate installed awaiting clearance to restore the water along the canal. When this is done, it will provide a long, virtual lake from Swafield right down as

far as Ebridge, passing through Bacton Wood Lock and the near-by Water Mill at Spa Common. Other advantages are many and varied including a vast area for wild-life to live, us mere mortals to exercise or take sport such as walking, canoeing, fishing – or just sitting and watching nature go by. Further upstream brought the party to Royston Bridge, where one could view the straight lengths of the man-made canal stretching into the distance on both sides of the bridge. Here could be seen the vast amount of work carried out to restore the banks to their previous heights in preparation for the return of the water. A Public Footpath runs along one bank, just reaching Pigneys Wood and a Permissive Path runs on the other bank, which stretches as far as Paston Way, southeast of Swafield, from where one can make the circular walk complete back into North Walsham. On returning to Honing Village Hall, the hall had been expertly laid out with tables and chairs for the guests to sit and partake of the prepared luncheon, with hot beverage and biscuits – our ladies did a wonderful job there! The Trust’s Chairman, Roy Medcalf, thanked everyone for attending before a Question & Answer session was taken. The Vice Chairman, Chris Black then added a few words before wishing everyone a safe journey after the meeting.

Twenty two representatives of the following attended:- Norfolk County Council, North Norfolk District Council, Broads Drainage Board, Royal Yachting Association, Knapton Parish Council, Happisburgh PC, North Walsham Historical Society, Broads Authority, Canal Owners, Worstead PC, Swafield and Bradfield PC, Trimmingham PC, Environment Agency and Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society.

Norman Lamb welcomes local plan to improve care and reduce hospital visits

NHS England recently approved a local plan to use part of the Government’s national £5.3 billion Better Care Fund to improve care for the elderly and those with complex health needs in Norfolk and reduce hospital admissions.

In Norfolk, health and care organisations are investing £56m in delivering better care. They aim to reduce hospital admission in this area by 3.5%, saving £4.9m to be re-invested in local health and care services. These local plans are at the heart of the Liberal Democrats’ plan to join up care in local communities, enabling doctors, nurses and carers to work together to support some of the most vulnerable people in society, including the elderly, and those with complex long term conditions. North Norfolk MP and Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb said “Currently, as a patient you have to negotiate a bewildering array of

different organisations to access the care or treatment you need. All too often people can fall through the gaps, ending up in A&E because of uncoordinated care. The Liberal Democrats want to join up different services around the needs of the individual, so health and care organisations work together to provide the best possible care. This approach will help deliver value for money, so that our NHS and care system are protected for the future. But it is also about building a fairer society - providing dignity to the vulnerable, and making sure people have the support to live their lives to the full.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “This approach will transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable in society. By getting local health and care teams working together to focus on prevention, we can stop families and the NHS from having to pay the price of unnecessary breakdowns in care. The Liberal Democrats are committed to joining up the whole health and care budget in the next Parliament, joining up the whole system around the needs of individual patients. Our health and care services have an essential role to play in giving everyone a fair chance in life."

Lib Dem environment minister Dan Rogerson visits community hit by floods a year ago Liberal Democrat environment minister Dan Rogerson MP visited North Norfolk earlier this month to meet with residents at Walcott who had been affected by the severe tidal flooding that struck the coast in December last year. After local MP Norman Lamb raised concerns with the minister earlier this year, Dan committed to come to North Norfolk and meet the community in Walcott. As minister for the coast and flooding, Dan Rogerson led the way in securing help for those affected last year, including a new £5,000 home improvement grant to help floodproof houses that had been affected, freezes in council tax and business rates for flooded properties, and extra funding for some councils to support the recovery effort.

Lib Dem environment minister Dan Rogerson commented “After speaking to Norman Lamb earlier this year I was determined to come to North Norfolk to meet some of those who had suffered the effects of last year’s severe tidal flooding. In government, the Liberal Democrats have spoken up for coastal communities, and we are investing £3.2bn in the repair and improvement of coastal defences. We are also working to make sure that local areas have robust plans in place to deal with flooding – and I know that emergency services and community groups came together to provide an excellent response along the coast in Norfolk when the floods struck last year. But we are also determined to tackle the factors that are contributing to climate change, which mean that events like the severe flooding last year could become much more frequent in future. We have campaigned to secure a Europe-wide commitment to reduce damaging emissions by 2030, helping make sure our environment is protected for future generations.”

properties. I will continue to work with Dan in Parliament to make sure that coastal communities, and those vulnerable to flooding, get the support they need.”

Photo credit to Pierre Butikofer : Left to right County Councillor Eric Seward, District Councillor Lee Walker, Dan Rogerson MP Lib Dem County Councillor for North Walsham East Cllr Eric Seward said “It was fantastic to have the opportunity to bring the minister to Walcott to meet with the community affected by last year’s severe tidal flooding. It was clear that he really understood the issues in Walcott, and I know that residents really appreciated the opportunity to make their case to him in person.”

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I really appreciated Dan Rogerson taking the time to come to North Norfolk. I had spoken to him earlier this year to explain the devastating effect of the flooding on some of my constituents in North Norfolk, and he felt was really important to come and see this for himself. Dan did a fantastic job making sure that support was provided to communities following last year’s flooding, including the £5,000 improvement grants for victims of flooding. He has also led the way in securing a new deal with insurance companies to limit premiums for those living in some of the highest-risk

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

Well autumn is well and truly with us now and all our flower beds are looking very soggy, but hopefully they will look good in the spring. We do have a few more plants to put in at the end of the month, but basically we managed to get all the planting done in one week this year. This was mainly due to the good weather when we needed it and the fact that all our wonderful helpers were available when required. It makes so much difference when we can have six or so people in an area at a time. We are aiming to start on the Grammar School Road bed before the weather gets really bad and have already managed to get some plants together to put there.

Unfortunately we have suffered from a spate of vandalism in the Market Place this year. One of our barrier baskets has repeatedly been tipped

over, causing a problem, as all the plants and soil fall on the road outside the HSBC bank and unless we can get to it quickly this all gets rubbished by the traffic – we cannot expect buses and lorries to try and drive around this spillage in a small area like the bottom of the Market Place. We have now involved the Police. The Police have comeback to us and advised that they think they know who is responsible, and will keep a watching brief. It is such a shame when we get this problem, and some of our older residents get quite upset when this happens. These baskets are bolted on heavy duty brackets, so it is not as though they could be tipped by just being knocked into.

Please note that our AGM will be held on Monday 8th December 2014 in the Council Chamber at North Walsham Town Council Offices at 2 pm. All are welcome. See you there!!

North Walsham Labour Party have criticised the Conservative administration at North Norfolk District Council for allowing the removal of a number of protected trees from the town.

David Spencer, one of Labour's campaigners in North Walsham, has said that the shock removal of the trees in front of the HP site is another example of planning failure from the District Council and another example of the Tory administration letting the town down.

He also accused the council of 'brushing under the carpet' plans to remove the trees - which had Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) - by bury-

ing it within the HP site planning application.

Mr Spencer said "During district council discussions about the HP site local concerns were overruled resulting in no social housing and no benefits for schools and local facilities. Now the news about the TPO rubs salt deeper into the wounds.

so important here in North Walsham. The local anger and shock indicates just how little people knew about it. Now we have lost some magnificent trees that will take years to replace the habitats that have been lost." He added "The Conservatives have talked a lot about localism - this is another example of how in North Walsham and North Norfolk it's yet to happen."

North Walsham & District Historical Society

The removal of the TPO should have been a separate planning application to enable a proper discussion about something we consider Milling and Wind Energy was the subject of a very informative November talk by Paul Hooper.

Thurne Mill was bought in 1949 by Bob Morse, who had been fascinated by mills since his childhood. The mill had been built in 1820 but by 1936 the mill had ceased working and by 1949 the mill was in a derelict state. Within a year Bob Morse had restored the mill including a new coat of gleaming white paint. The invoice for the paint and labour came to £7, 2s and 6d. In comparison, when the mill was re-painted in 2013, the job cost £10,000!

Paul explained how the various parts of a windmill work and shared some interesting tidbits – for example, how the wooden teeth of the cogs in the mill mechanism were made of Apple Wood, which exudes oil, and therefore made the cogs self-lubricating.

Paul then talked about the Wind Energy Museum at Repps with Bastwick. After Bob Morse has saved Thurne Mill, he set about collecting old wind engines. In the collection are engines from the UK, America and Australia. Several of the pumps have local connections, like a Holmes Steam Pump constructed by the Norwich builders Holmes and Son, who had a factory off Cattle Market Street in the city.

Paul also covered some of the local mills including Moy’s Mill, Roland Green’s Mill, Ludham Bridge Mill and Horsey Mill. Two hundred years ago, the Norfolk coastline was popular with smugglers ....if the customs men set off from Great Yarmouth then the mill at Caister would set its four sails in a St Andrew’s cross (X) position as a warning and all the mills along the route to Horsey Mill would do the same: the law is on its way! Conversely, if all was clear, the sails would be set in the St George’s cross (+) position!

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm, Thursday 4 December, in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham. Chanter’s Jigge will be playing Medieval Instruments and Christmas Music. Visitors are warmly welcomed. 16

NORTH WALSHAM LIBRARY CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH The library hosted some exciting events during the October half term to celebrate Black History month.

The Afroluso dance group, made up of young people who are based in Great Yarmouth, entertained a group of adults and taught them some moves!

Parents, carers and children were also treated to fabulous storytelling and singing run by Nigerian born Patience Unazi and learned about African culture and could handle fabrics, masks and other artefacts, afterwards commenting "we learned about African dress, music, culture and language and "we should have more of these sessions available as they are so inspiring."

LAST OPPORTUNITY ART COMPETITION OPEN TO ALL

A unique opportunity to win four, 2-hour oneto-one mentoring painting sessions with Bob Brant, a founder member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists. Bob has been a professional painter, specialising in oils, for over twenty years and has exhibited work at both the Royal Society of Marie Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in the Mall Galleries in London on a number of occasions. He is an art teacher, who has written for the Artist and Illustrators Magazine for nine years and

has recently contributed to the International Artists Magazine.

Any one over the age of 18 years can enter the competition. Just send three digital images of paintings you have created yourself, together with a statement (not to exceed 100 words) of why you think you would benefit from working with an experienced artist and teacher to info@eastanglianartists.com

The winner will be entitled to submit 3 paint-

ings to the IEA’s Open Exhibition in the autumn of 2015, one of which will be selected for hanging and will also receive a prize donated by Winsor & Newton. The competition winner will be notified by the 31st December and put in touch directly with Bob by email so that mutually convenient dates for the sessions can be arranged. Deadline for submissions is 1st December 2014 so time is running out to participate in the unique opportunity to develop your art skills. Cromer welcomes everyone, especially walkers

Seven months of hard work paid off in August, when Cromer was given accreditation as a Walkers are Welcome town. Walkers are Welcome is a nationwide initiative launched in 2007 to encourage towns and villages to be ‘welcoming to walkers’. The network has expanded rapidly and there are now over 100 locations across the UK that have joined this innovative community led scheme to benefit from Walkers are Welcome accreditation.

Don Davenport, who has been coordinating the efforts in Cromer said “I enjoy walking around Cromer and want to share my passion with others getting Cromer recognised as a centre for walking is an excellent starting point to develop walking as a healthy activity around the area, and encourage people to visit Cromer as a centre for walking”.

Walkers are Welcome aims are to encourage and support towns and villages to ● be attractive destinations for walkers with top quality information on local walks ● offer local people and visitors excellent walking opportunities within their areas ● ensure that footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained, improved and well signposted ● contribute to local tourism plans and regeneration strategies ● promote the health benefits of walking and increase participation ● encourage the use of public transport Working with the Norfolk Trails team, a website has already been created, www.walkcromer.co.uk, with downloadable walks available.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The little cat we called Polka, who would not settle in a pen, is still living with the young lady who agreed to take responsibility for her care. Although not yet ready to accept contact with people she is much happier now that she has more space and we are hopeful that given enough time she will learn to trust her carer.

Fortunately, several cats and kittens have found loving new homes since last time and apart from more kittens arriving in care, it has allowed us to take in Aggie, a lovely 15 year old tortie girl who has apparently been living outside for the last 2 years, ever since her owner died. One of our volunteers has already indicated that she may have a friend interested in giving this lovely friendly girl a home so we have our fingers crossed for her.

are so friendly. Although all these kittens are black, with lovely shiny coats, they are all different and real little characters. As someone who is particularly fond of black cats I hope that others will realise what lovely companions they will make and offer them homes soon. I agree with Stephanie when she says that character is more important than colour when looking for a cat or kitten. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Among the recent additions to our kittens was Leo, a sweet little ginger and white boy, who was about 2 weeks old when he arrived and has been hand reared. His fosterer was concerned as he was not thriving as well as should be expected and a visit to see David, one of our vets, was indicated. It was discovered that this friendly little lad has no soft palate and requires an operation to rectify the problem. Cromer welcomes a new Model Shop

Buoys Toys & Models, opened in July, and is located opposite the Tourist Information Centre and specialises in modelling supplies and accessories.

Dave Medhurst, a modeller himself, wanted to create an olde worlde Dickensian style toy shop with small-paned windows, subdued lighting, beams and plenty of nooks and crannies. The shop goes much of the way to realising his vision with stock spilling across four rooms. It does thankfully fall short of recreating any of the dirt, dust and cobwebs associated with shops of that time!

There are plenty of materials for modellers such as woods, plastics and metals, and these rub shoulders with scenics, paints, fillers, glues, small electrical components and other odds and ends that you didn’t even know you needed! If you’re a collector then it might be worth taking a peek in the display cabinets that house a varied selection of diecast models. The shop has an underlying creative theme so you’ll find a whole host of kits and bits to suit many tastes. There is also a small developing shop-themed dollshouse section and a range of miniature hardware items, such as screws, hinges and clasps, for many a craft project.

So if you enjoy creative hobbies, or are simply looking for that special gift, then they may have just the thing for you. The shop is all about face-to-face sales, hence there’s currently no website, so you’ll need to pop in for a browse! You can however keep an eye on shop developments via Facebook (buoystoysandmodels) and for more day-to-day information Twitter (BuoysToysCromer).

The shop’s regular opening hours are Mon, Thu, Fri and Sat 09.30 – 17.00. Buoys Toys & Models, 30 Louden Road, Cromer, NR27 9EF 01263 519652

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

‘WHEN AUTUMN LEAVES START TO FALL’

Everyone has heard the apologies for railway delays due to ‘leaves on the line’ but how do small things like leaves manage to hold up a modern train? Well it seems that when leaves fall on the line, particularly in damp or wet weather, the rolling action of passing wheels compress them, causing a greasy mulch to cover the rails.

This mulch is to railways what ice is to roads. It reduces the adhesion between wheel and rail and acceleration must be reduced to prevent slipping and braking distances extended thereby causing delays.

Leaves are therefore obviously tough and as gardeners we should bear this in mind when making our own leaf mould which is so useful in the garden. The best quality leaf mould is made from the leaves of oak, beech or hornbeam which decompose quite quickly but all leaves and even conifer needles will eventually break down. Thick leaves like sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut need to be shredded before they are added to the pile. Evergreens such as holly and laurel are better shredded and added to the compost heap where they will break down eventually rather than being added to the leaf mould pile.

blowing away. Decomposition can be accelerated by turning the heap at intervals and also by running the lawn mower over the pile a few times. Grass cuttings can be added to the rotting leaves to add to the nutrient value Leaf mould can be used in many ways • Peat substitute. Use leaf mould in place of peat because it has similar qualities and it is a renewable resource • Moisture retaining mulch. Leaf mould can

had a 20 percent lower bulk density. The improved soil could hold a two-week supply of water for vegetables. • Seedling compost. Mix one part well-aged compost or worm casings for a nutrent rich potting mixture for seedlings. As a postscript to my previous articles on the anniversary of the First World War I have found a little piece about the building of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, which is the centrepiece of the annual Remembrance Sunday parade. It seems that small shrines decorated with flowers began to appear in the streets of the East End of London from the summer of 1916, while similar private shrines were made in thousands of homes in the absence of the bodies of loved ones. In August 1918, 100,000 people laid flowers at a memorial shrine in Hyde Park. Intended as a temporary structure, it remained in place for more than a year and led to the building of the Cenotaph. The installation of poppies at the Tower of London seems to have had the same effect on the public with the calls for them to be displayed for a longer period.

hold up to 500 times its own weight in water. Place it around, but not touching, the crowns of annuals, perennials and vegetables to help them maintain moisture during summer. • Soil conditioner. There are potential problems to watch out for. Leaf mould can become infested with weeds, so use the resulting product cautiously, avoiding formal areas of the garden where weeds would be a serious problem. Street leaves are best avoided as they may be contaminated with litter and rubbish and chemical pollutants. There are several ways of creating leaf mould but whatever your method it is important to keep the leaves moist. • For the Lazy Gardener. NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS CLOSE CUP CALL FOR NWSCD NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS CLOSE CUP CALL FOR NWSCD

The attention in the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League turned to the second round ties in the Knockout Singles Cup. At Hunworth Village Hall, Poacher’s Steve Dams and Andy and Laura Marsh hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone. Dams had lost to both Stone and Kirkup when the two teams met in the League a month ago but was in much better form this time around as he won a topsyturvy opener against Stone in five. Andy Marsh then made it 2-0 in Poacher’s favour as he came from a set down to beat Sawyer in four. Kirkup’s serves ultimately proved key in the first set against Laura Marsh as he saved a set-point at 11-12 and took his fourth chance to close it out 14-12 before going on to win a battle of good hitting in straight. Andy Marsh had beaten Stone in five previously, but this time the NWSCD player reversed that result to come back from two sets to one down and win the decider 11-9 to level the tie at 2-2. It was then Dams turn to reverse his previous loss to Kirkup as he saved three setpoints and won the last five-points from 7-10 in the third to close out his win in straight. Some great attacking shots from Laura Marsh saw her take the first two sets from Sawyer 12-10, 11-9 as Poachers looked to be heading to a 4-2 lead, but Sawyer’s experience and a subtle change of tactics with increased top-spin saw her fight back to win the next three sets 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 and crucially level the tie at 3-3. Andy Marsh and Kirkup split their opening two sets before a 4-0 lead was good enough for the Poacher to take the third. There was an astonishing point in the fourth as Kirkup’s attack finally got past Marsh’s amazing defence, but that point perhaps was the turning point as Kirkup was now a different player and was dictating the play as he came back to win in five. Laura

Council set to review polling districts and polling places

North Norfolk District Council is to embark on a four yearly review of its polling districts and places, to make sure voting is convenient for people and polling stations are up to the job.

The review will look at whether communities are properly served by the places and facilities chosen for polling at election times; and will take in to consideration how a sparsely-populated rural area can sometimes pose challenges.

Marsh then led Stone 5-1 in the first, but he came back to win in straight and close out NWSCD’s 53 win.

Another second round tie took place at Antingham Village Hall as NWSCE’s Stuart Hook, James Lester and Joel Lodge hosted LCC Crab’s Tim Dawson and Ian and Val Kidger. NWSCE won 5-1 which became 7-2 after the dead rubbers had been played. Dawson took a brace for Crabs with two wins in four, but all the remaining games were won in straight by NWSCE including a fine 12-10, 11-9, 11-3 win for Hook against Dawson. NWSCA became the third home team in the quarter-finals following their comfortable win against Dropshots with maximums for both John Vaughan and Andy Beane. Vaughan won the opener in four against Alf Greer and also edged out Anne Armitage 15-13 in the fourth.

There has also been plenty of activity in the League with 8-2 wins for both NWSCA and NWSCB against Sharks and Poachers respectively while also in the Premier Division Backhanders beat NWSCD 6-4. In the First division NWSCC lost to Crosscourts 9-1 but Stuart Hook’s fine form continued for NWSCE as he took a maximum during the team’s 64 loss to Aylsham B. In the Second Division, Mundesley A’s Trevor Vincent, Andrew Tuddenham and Derek Sidaway hosted NWSCF’s Phil Mole and Stan and Brenda Baldock with Vincent’s maximum including a win in five against Mole who took a brace for the visitors. Brenda Baldock beat Sidaway from two down but the Mundesley player teamed up with Tuddenham for a five set doubles win against Mole and Stan Baldock that concluded Mundesley’s 7-3 win

The Review of Polling District and Polling Places will look at populations and facilities to see whether any changes can, or should, be made and whether new locations and more appropriate locations have become available. The review must be completed before 31 January 2015.

A consultation is now open until 8 December 2014, giving people a chance to suggest new places for polling stations, or comment on the suitability and accessibility of existing ones. To respond to the consultation, write to Suzanne Taylor, Electoral Services Manager, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9EN, or send an email to

elections@north-norfolk.gov.uk Consultation responses will be made public as part of the final review report.

North Norfolk District Council’s Returning Officer, Sheila Oxtoby, said “The review will make sure North Norfolk’s polling stations are as convenient and accessible as possible, which includes looking at access for disabled people.

“We would like to hear from people who have had difficulties with particular polling stations in the past, so we can try to address these problems, or look for different locations; however, we have to be realistic as in some rural areas choices are very limited.”

A Very Merry Christmas at Sheringham Little Theatre

A veritable feast of pantomime fun is being served up at Sheringham Little Theatre this festive season when Robin Hood is joined by the Babes in the Wood.

West End star Killian Donnelly has written a special seasonal show for the coastal venue, which brings the classic tale of the Merry Men together with an old Norfolk yarn.

Robin Hood, which also features a number of modern twists, runs from Tuesday 9 December until Saturday 3 January and promises to be a colourful and lively show, with plenty for adults as well as children.

said. “I was in Snow White last year and I am really pleased to be in Robin Hood too.”

Penny Othon, 10, from Sheringham Primary School, won the role of Jill after auditioning at the theatre. “My eyes lit up when I heard I’d been given the part – I love singing and dancing so much and being in a pantomime is especially good fun because all the characters are so funny,” she said. The pantomime will feature new and familiar faces; much-loved panto dame Russel Hicken will return in all his vibrant glory in the role of Nanny Polly Tix.

“We are so excited to be working with Killian again this year,” said Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre. “This is a completely new script, which will be just as much fun as Snow White was last year.

Robin Hood will be played by Martin Allanson, Maid Marion by Maeve Smyth, Twitface by Rik Warren and the Sheriff of Rottingham by Timothy Harker. “The main cast is, of course, professional and we are thrilled that this year they will be joined by so many Norfolk children,” Debbie said.

“Killian has written it to ensure we have been able to include lots of young people this year and of, course, by incorporating the homegrown story of Babes in the Wood too we know there will be plenty of local interest.”

Wayland Wood, near Watton, is, of course, supposed to be where a young brother and sister were abandoned by their evil uncle centuries ago. In Killian’s tale, the uncle is the Sheriff of Rottingham and the babes are Jack and Jill.

Callum Crowe, nine, from Bignold Primary School, in Norwich, plays Jack in the panto. “I think it is going to be a good story,” he

Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival

St. Andrews Methodist Churh Sheringham extends a warm invitation to enjoy the atmosphere in your build up to Christmas by visiting Sheringham’s 5th Charity Christmas Tree Festival which will take place from Thursday 11 December to Wednesday 16 December.

represented. Each charity will decorate its tree in an imaginative way that will uniquely portray the charities aims. There will also be a prayer tree where visitors will be able to write a prayer and display it on the tree and to add to the ambiance the magical displays will be supported by a background of seasonal music.

Organised jointly by St Andrew’s and St. Peter’s Parish Church the festival is a major event for Sheringham and provides a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors. Last year’s event was held at St. Peter’s and raised over £6,000 for the 41 charities that took part. This year, again, over 40 local and national charities will be

After seeing the trees, visitors will also be able to buy last minute Christmas gifts from an abundance of stalls organised by the participating charities. There will also be a special craft section for children to take an active part in the festival while parents enjoy a cup of tea and light refreshments that will be available throughout.

Santa’s coming to CAS

We at C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham are running for the second year our very successful Santa’s Sleigh Appeal. We will be having a Santa’s Sleigh in our branch between 20th November and the 18th December and are hoping to fill the sleigh with lots of lovely toys and goodies which will then be presented to Break Charity on the 19th December. Break Charity will then distribute the gifts to the vulnerable children, families and young people they work with. We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us with this worthy cause and donate a small gift, child’s book or toy, unwrapped from a baby to a teenager. All we ask, is that you pop it into the branch unwrapped by the 18th December. We really hope this year’s appeal will be even more successful than last year and we can make this Christmas an extra special one and put a smile on the faces of local children and families supported by Break. Thank you in advance for your support. With kind regards, Nina and the team, C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham.

Bring and Buy at St. Nicholas House School

On October 15th Years 5 and 6 at St Nicholas House School organised and ran their annual Bring and Buy sale to raise money for a charity of their choice. This year the pupils

chose the charity War Child which helps children across the world whose families, communities and schools have been torn apart by war. The pupils did a brilliant job of setting up and running the stalls, baking cakes, donating toys and restoring the School Hall to normality afterwards! The sale was a great success raising nearly £200! Well done Years 5 and 6; all your hard work paid off.
