Local Author Wins Book of the Month Award
Father Christmas ready to greet children
The book is a biography of heroic RAF fighter pilot Douglas Bader who fought throughout the Battle of Britain despite having lost both his legs in an earlier aircraft crash.
Father Christmas and his Elves are ready and waiting to bring a smile and a little bit of Christmas magic to the children of North Norfolk from a very special place, the stage of the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier.
Bretwalda Books recently announced that their Independent Panel of Readers have chosen "Douglas Bader" by Norfolk-based historian Michael Evans, who lives just outside Cromer, to be November's Book of the Month.
Without doubt the most famous RAF fighter ace of World War II, Douglas Bader joined the air force in 1928, but was invalided out after an horrific crash in 1931 cost him both his legs. After learning to walk and fly again, Bader rejoined the RAF in 1939, fighting over Dunkirk and in the Battle of Britain. In the later stages of the Battle, Bader played a leading role in the “Big Wing Controversy” that continues to divide military experts to this day.
Editorial Director Rupert Matthews says “There was some stiff competition in November from other books that we have out. In the end our Independent Panel of Readers settled on the biography of Douglas Bader. It is a worthy winner indeed. My congratulations to author Michael Evans.”

Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier
Starting on the 7th December Father Christmas and his Elves will be on the stage of the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier every weekend from 10am – 12.30pm throughout December to greet the children of Norfolk and along with his two Elves give each child a present. “Suitable for children from 0 -10 years old there will also be plenty of opportunity to take photographs as they chat to Santa and his Elves Of course being a clever Santa and with a little help from Mum and Dad who will fill in a quick questionnaire he will make sure that he knows each child’s name and a little bit about them so that as he chats with them he can make each conversation more personal and perhaps add that extra bit of magic to the visit.
Cromer Pier General Manager Rebecca Wass, said, “We are all very excited about Father Christmas’ visit and we are delighted that he has chosen the Pavilion Theatre to spread a bit of Christmas Cheer to everyone. ” She continued, Father Christmas is leaving the singing and dancing to the cast of the Cromer Christmas Show and with a 2pm weekend Matinee performance staying to see the show is a great way to complete the day”.
The Pavilion Bar will be open and to add to the Christmas Cheer there will be Mulled Wine and Mince Pies as well as the useful selection of hot and cold drinks and tasty snacks.
Father Christmas added “I am really looking forward to meeting all the children and their parents and I suspect a number of grand parents, Christmas is wonderful time for families and I hope my visit to the Cromer Pier will add to the Christmas fun for everyone”
Booking is advisable to ensure you are not disappointed, please call the Box office for more details. Box office 01263 512495 £5.00 per child

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
Christmas is nearly upon us and we are very busy with Christmas parties, and our Christmas Day Luncheon is fully booked. We do have a few places left in our restaurant for our New Years Eve Dinner but my advise is to book as soon as possible because I am certain they will not be available for very long. New Years Eve is also our Party in the Bar with Chris Wilson performing a blend of rock and blues featuring the songs of Buddy Holly and Paolo Nutini creating a rich musical treat with songs from the 50’s to today and an ideal way to see in the New Year. We are already planing our menus for the new year and will be announcing this very shortly. 1Nathan Boon’s Recipe for Cranberry Sause.
I am pleased to confirm that your ‘Buy One Get One Free’ lunchtime order will be available through January and February every Monday to Friday lunchtime and on Wednesday evenings our popular
‘Theme Nights’ will be back with a range of tempting dishes to bring a little cheer to winter evenings Don’t forget the annual Overstrand Pantomime in February, this years it’s Jack and Alice in Overstrandland, tickets are on sale from 5th January at the pub.
So may I wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on behalf of everyone at the White Horse, Overstrand Nathan.

Chair of Public Accounts Committee talks tax in Sheringham at Labour’s Christmas Meal
The Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Margaret Hodge MP, joined North Norfolk Labour Party’s Christmas Dinner in Sheringham this month. Mrs Hodge used her speech to explain further the work she does on the Public Accounts Committee and also the impact that corporations avoiding tax has on small businesses across the country. Speaking on Small Business Saturday she cited the success of local independent book publishers SALT Publishing, but she expressed concerns that other small publishers had been less successful because of companies like Amazon not paying their fair share of tax. She believed Britain had become a ‘tax haven’ under the current government and said that if the Labour Party clamped down on corporations like Starbucks and Google in a future government more money would be raised to pay for services. She said she was unconvinced that a "Google tax" unveiled in the Autumn Statement was enough.
NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
We are now entering our winter period which you would think should be considerably quieter than the rest of the year. However this is not really the case. We are now starting on our second Grammar School Road bed, and a group of us will be working on this at the weekend. Even though the weather is very cold at the moment we have a job to do! On the subject of Grammar School Road we are very sorry to say that the sign has been damaged – this may well be to do with the local feeling over Heinz Foods – but at the moment the sign, which belongs to us, has been damaged. Also there is a considerable amount of dog poo on this site, which considering the fact that the site is fenced, is somewhat of an achievement. We have our suspicions as to who is responsible for this, so be warned if any of our band see this happening we will be having a word. It is not nice for our ladies to have to deal with. Unfortunately the same can be said at the present time
Margaret Hodge was joined by Hywel Lloyd from the Labour Coast and Country group which is pushing for a ‘rural-proofed’ manifesto that works for both urban areas, rural areas, and coastal areas too. Hywel spoke about the need for better transport links in North Norfolk and across the county, and for policies that improve living standards in both city and rural areas too – particularly in the areas of education and health. Denise Burke, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk and the chair of the local Labour Party, said “This year’s Christmas Party was even bigger than the last with a great turnout for our two key speakers. With the General Election just five months away we are now all geared up to hitting the doorsteps and spreading the word of the great work that both Margaret and Hywel are doing across the country. The Christmas Party at The Burlington in Sheringham was the last major social event for North Norfolk Labour Party before the General Election in May 2015. Find out how to join the Labour Party at www.norfolklabour.co.uk or call 01692 650816.
for the Church Yard where some of our plants have been scrapped up by dog paws as well as poo being left on the Cross and Scout bed. I think that is enough of our moans, we are really quite a happy bunch so hopefully we will not need to mention the above again. At this time of the year we always think of our past members who are no longer with us. In particular Ellen Grover, Pat Stott and Ron Nash come to mind as well as Liz Cornwall who moved away in June. These people were original stalwarts of our organisation. We still miss their input and knowledge and even now I sometimes think I will ask Ellen or Pat about whatever it is I need to know. We would like to wish all our supporters near and far a Very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year and hope to see
you all in the New Year. It is lovely when you stop to talk to us when we are working.

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR
Once again the residents of North Walsham and the surrounding area have demonstrated their amazing generosity in supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal. We have, to date, raised £15,081 which exceeds last year’s final total by over £2,300.
We were assisted again this year by a great team of helpers who, together with staff from Sainsbury and Waitrose manned collection points

in both stores for two weeks. It would also have been impossible to achieve such a fantastic total without the support of the many businesses, schools and individuals who hosted or carried Poppy Tins throughout the area. Most of all though thank you to the wonderfully generous people of the North Walsham Area who once again donated a record amount and helped ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises. Kevin said ‘Crayford and Abbs are very pleased to support youth and sport in the community and are currently working with Lee Patterson – Royal Cromer Golf Club, Cromer Youth and the Holt Youth Project’.
The Club would like to thank Kevin Abbs of Crayford & Abbs who has generously sponsored the cost of the kit.
Cromer Youth have recently been named a "Chartered Community Club". In order to achieve this prestigious accolade status, a lot of criteria have to be fulfilled, including having teams for boys and girls as well as an adults team (Cromer Youth

However this problem was overcome by a Rev Langstroff, about 170 years ago when he designed a hive which allowed for the retrieval of the honey, without the destruction of the swarm. John demonstrated this by assembling his own hive. While its appearance differed from that of the conventional hive with which most of are familiar, it is, John assured us, somewhat cheaper!
NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
‘A swarm of bees in May is worth a bale of hay. A swarm in June is worth a silver spoon. A swarm in July isn’t worth a fly’
A phrase familiar to beekeepers introduced John Everett’s talk to North Walsham Probus Club in November. It aptly reflected the relatively short periods of production by bees, and their limited lives. While a Queen may survive for about two years, a worker’s life is about six weeks in the summer and six months in the winter, when they ‘cuddle up’. During the summer they quite literally work themselves to death.
Bees swarm in hollows and until about 170 years ago were frequently kept in a straw basket known as a skep. The difficulty was that
It isn’t possible to establish how long bees have existed, but it is clear that they survive on pollen, indicating that their existence followed the growth of foliage. Certainly man has used honey for a considerable time. The most common is food, but it was also fermented to pro-
vide alcoholic drink, ie mead and 800 years ago bees wax was used to make candles. Propulis, a resin produced by honey, has also been used as an effective sealant. Another less commonly known fact is the use of honey for medicinal purposes, in this case as a healing agent for cuts and bruises.
John, a former science teacher, was first introduced to beekeeping following a lecture on rural studies in Yorkshire 40 years ago. Members were informed that a beehive can sometimes prove a useful, if somewhat unusual, gift!
The Club meets for its Christmas lunch on the 17 December. The usual meetings resume on the 28 January, when we hope to see new members. Ted Gadsden

Last Night of the Blickling Proms back by popular demand Early bird tickets available at only £29 until 31 January 2015! Following popular demand after the success of the event over the last three years, Revival Productions are delighted to announce that on Saturday 8 August 2015, Blickling Estate will again be playing host to a grand, British Proms spectacular; an evening full of fun and nostalgia. The 2015 event will be celebrating a very special 75th anniversary for Blickling itself, so concert organisers have decided to throw

a “1940s party!” to mark the occasion and Early Bird tickets are now on offer at just £29 (available until 31 January 2015); the perfect Christmas present for someone special. So why is 2015 such an important anniversary year for Blickling? The estate’s last private owner, Philip Kerr, the 11th Marquess of Lothian, died in December 1940. This visionary man bequeathed the Blickling Estate to the National Trust, setting the seal on the National Trust Country Houses Scheme, which grew from an idea he had formulated with the help of James Lees-Milne. Under this scheme, many estates were saved rather than being broken up, and whole houses and their contents could be donated to the nation intact, in place of death duties. The Blickling Estate was the first of all the major properties to be left to the National Trust in this way. “It’s going to be a special year for Blickling”, said Jo Bosch, Marketing & Visitor Manager at the National Trust Blickling Estate: “The Proms is one of the year’s signature events, and we’re so pleased that the 2015 concert theme will help us to tell his story.” There’s plenty to celebrate so come and join the party. The Grace Spitfire will introduce the evening with a choreographed routine to Ron Goodwin’s “Battle of Britain” which will then lead in to other well-loved music from the era including “Moonlight Seranade” by Glenn Miller,

As is customary at these events now, song sheets will be provided so that the crowd can join in and sing along with their friends. Children from Rowan Class delivered a commemorative celebrations in honour of our war heroes on Friday 7 November as part of Remembrance. The children performed an outstanding and quite emotional story of the WW1 Christmas Truce on Christmas Day 1914. They described how a football match was seen as a symbolic moment of peace between Germany and Great Britain and how humanity on that day prevailed, bringing enemies together to celebrate and enjoy a shared love of football. The children gave poignant speeches about our fallen; but never forgotten; heroes from past to present and how we thank them every year on a special day of Remembrance. They acknowledged the sacrifice of our service men and women, who gave up their tomorrow for our todays.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection League
As we approach Christmas once again it’s time to reflect on what has happened this year. At the time of writing we have had 245 cats and kittens in care this year, with 192 having been found loving new homes? Our latest arrivals joined us on 6th December, a lovely little black cat with her six 10 day old black kittens, now safely tucked up in a pen with Kelly whose children are delighted to see the new arrivals. During the year we have lost 3 cats, 2 were kittens with serious health problems and the other cat Max, 19 years old, had been in the home of his fosterer as a Golden Oldie, enjoying the benefits of being in a home but with support from the branch for medical bills.
lives while in care.
Our fundraisers have been very busy this year, not only at our major events but also selling at car boots, table top sales, street collections and on line to help fund the work we do. Two of our ladies, Barbara and Valerie who do not live in our area, deserve a special mention as they have raised over £1000 at events in their area and came to our Christmas Sale where they ran the jewellery stall.
It has been a challenging year but also very rewarding. Seeing the cats that have been in care happily settled in their homes makes it all worthwhile. We would like Photo : Not, who came into care at 5 days to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and to wish them a Happy old with her brother Spot Christmas and a Prosperous and Healthy Several of the cats in care have needed dentals which made for New Year. happier cats, while others have had major surgery : cats like Billie, eye removed, Patsy, bladder operation, Duchess, tail removed and Not, If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 whose foot was amputated and who will need further surgery when she is 535858. Thankfully only 3 cats were initially positive, one coming back negative from the external source. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten The 2 FIV positive cats are now happily settled in indoor homes. Suffield community to benefit from North Norfolk Big Society Fund grant
Suffield residents can now enjoy a much improved village hall thanks to a £2000 grant from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund.
Suffield Village Hall now benefits from improved heating, lighting and cooking facilities following a successful grant application from its Committee.
The hall had previously been heated by Calor gas units. As well as being insufficient to heat the hall, they were difficult to light and were a potential fire risk. The lighting was also identified as being insufficient, and while the kitchen area had been refurbished, it remained without a cooker, and therefore limited activities that the hall could be used for. North Norfolk District Council’s Local Member for Suffield, Glyn Williams, said “Village halls contribute a great deal to the wellbeing of our local communities and North Norfolk District Council is delighted to have been able to play a part in supporting Suffield Village Hall’s long term future. I hope that the upgraded facilities will encourage many more local residents to make the most of their village hall.”
Treasurer of the Suffield Village Hall Trust charity, Charles Hull, said “Our village hall is the heart of the community and gives local people a place where they can enjoy many different activities. And now that the facilities have undergone much needed improvements, I am confident that the hall can offer even more activities for the whole community to enjoy.”

NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS
FIRST SEMI-FINALISTS DETERMINED The first quarter-finals in both of the Knockout Cups have taken place. In the Knockout Singles, Cromer Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Paul Warner and Whil De Neve hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, John Vaughan and Tom Baldock-Yaxley at Cromer Tennis Club with Wilson winning the opener in five against Beane. At times in the second battle there were fleeting glimpses of vintage Vaughan a la 1979, but it was Warner who put Backhanders 2-0 ahead in the contest with a 12-14, 17-15, 8-11, 11-7, 11-1 win. Baldock-Yaxley picked up the visitors first win in straight against De Neve before Warner took the first against Beane and then came back from 3-9 to take the second 12-10. The NWSCA player took the third but was overpowered in the fourth as the hosts now led 3-1. However, the tie was soon levelled at 3-3 as Baldock-Yaxley defeated Wilson in straight and Vaughan edged out De Neve 12-10 in the fourth – just a couple of points here and there and the odd slice of luck separating the latter duo. Baldock-Yaxley then defeated Warner 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 12-10 and it was his maximum that made the d ifference to NWSCA’s 5-3 victory which was sealed when Beane beat De Neve 15-13, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6. Another quarter-final in the Singles took place at North Walsham
Sports Centre as NWSCE hosted Gresham’s School A. Each of the NWSCE trio of Stuart Hook and James and Ben Lester picked up a win against Brian Li, who was edged out 13-11 in the fourth by Ben Lester. Some magical fun from Haken Bennell cost him a few sets and nearly the game to James Lester – the Gresham’s player coming through 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 10-12, 11-9 and also taken to four by Hook. Hook also took a set from Ian Darricott but it was Gresham’s who won the contest 5-3.
A Doubles Cup quarter-final saw NWSCD’s Joe Kirkup, Ray Howe and Philip Stone host Cromer Crosscourt’s Rod Goffin, Terry Lawes and Wren Thatcher with Goffin and Lawes winning the opener from a set down against Howe and Stone. The hosts won the next two battles in straight before Kirkup and Stone’s four set win against Goffin and Lawes continued their momentum and no more sets were dropped during NWSCD’s 5-1 win. NWSCA also met NWSCA in a Premier Division derby. Stone lost out 11-8 in the fifth to both Beane and Vaughan and also came close to reversing his fortunes against Baldock-Yaxley – at one stage of their contest the NWSCA player led by a set and 9-0, at another the NWSCD player had two chances to force a decider –
but Baldock-Yaxley came through 11-6, 11-3, 6-11, 12-10 and took a maximum also beating Howe in four. Howe hit some fine winners to beat Vaughan in straight and had some fantastic rallies against Beane. Howe led the decider 4-0, but Beane top-spun his way back to another 118 victory – part of a third of NWSCA’s 9-1 match win where their opponents were only three points adrift from getting a much closer result. Meanwhile Gresham’s School A’s team of Robin Thaxter, Hubert Cheng and Haken Bennell won 10-0 against NWSCB. For the visitors, Paul Price hit some great backhands, Simon Halliday picked up a set against both Cheng and Bennell and Dennis Elliott did lots of walking! Elsewhere in the League, new signing Paul Brown helped NWSCC win their First division match against Gresham’s School B 7-3 and the team also beat Dropshots 8-2, while in the Second division NWSCF drew with Aylsham D.
Chance to lobby the government on later trains for North Norfolk Transport campaigners are calling on North Norfolk residents to take part in the latest Department for Transport consultation surrounding the East Anglia rail network.
The North Norfolk Labour Party, which earlier this year launched a petition for later trains on the Bittern Line, are calling on those who wish to see later trains in the district to respond to a new consultation launched this week. The findings of the Department for Transport consultation will feed into drawing up the contract for East Anglia's rail network in 2016.
Campaigners met with Greater Anglia in September who claimed that midnight trains from Norwich to North Walsham, Cromer and Sheringham could be possible - but only with a rethink from Network Rail which carries out maintenance on the lines overnight. The Labour Party would also like to see the new hourly service at weekends continue beyond 2016, more capacity on trains at busier periods - particularly on Norwich City match days, and the inclusion of Worstead and Gunton in more train services. Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "This consultation takes into account views on all of the train lines in the East of England and so we should not miss this opportunity to feed in our views on the Bittern Line too.
Hundreds of residents signed our petition earlier this year for later trains from Norwich to North Norfolk and this is a good opportunity to ensure it features on the specifications of a future contract.
24
The need for better public transport provision is regularly mentioned by residents on the doorsteps and we must continue to assert pressure on the government to make it happen." The consultation will run until 16 March 2015 and can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/east-anglia-rail-passenger-franchise

NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST COFFEE MORNING
of a hot drink and a piece of cake!
Various people had the opportunity to speak with Mr Lamb and a couple of photographs were taken with members of the Trust including our very own ‘Canal Girls’. A very pleasant and successful morning and we thank all the folk who visited, for your company.
INFORMATION EVENING
The Trust held a Coffee Morning in the St Benet Hall, North Walsham, on the morning of 13 November. Trust officers were on hand to offer advice and information to the visitors using the available banners, photographs, maps and other literature together with some splendid cakes on offer with the hot beverages. It turned out to be quite a hectic morning with a surprising number of folk coming in and asking so many questions about our local canal. The main question was “when will it be open again?” Unfortunately, the Trust cannot answer that question with any authority as it depends on so many things which are outside the control of the Trust. Towards the end of the morning, the assembled people were very pleasantly surprised when the Rt. Hon. Norman Lamb, MP arrived and partook
The Trust held a second Information Evening in the St Benet Hall in North Walsham 20 November, virtually one year after the first. Ivan Cane, the archivist to the Trust, presented another of his wonderful, visually assisted accounts of the canal – past and present and finishing with what he hoped would be the situation on the 200th anniversary of the opening of the canal when it comes up in 2025. To all the folk from this area, Ivan repeated the words ‘your local canal’. This canal is quite unusual as it is privately owned, in this case by four separate parties. The regulations applicable to the use, maintenance and future of the canal are still as laid down in the enabling Act of Parliament signed by King George IIIrd in May 1812 and the second Act signed by Queen Victoria in 1866 which permitted the sale of the canal but prohibited the closing of same. Refreshments were taken following questions to Ivan Cane and the raffle drawn, which raised some £93. Thank You! Chris Black, the Work Party Leader addressed the assembled some 70 people on what is actually happening between the top and lower end of the canal and what to expect in the near and distant future. The petition stating that the signatories are
in favour of the Trust carrying on with their restoration work has now reached a staggering total of around 2,500 names! As the petition has only been put to people attending our events and information talks, it is felt that this is quite remarkable. Have you signed it yet? There is inevitably a token amount of opposition to the restoration and this is probably due to ignorance of one sort or another as explained by the Work Party Organiser, David Revill. The canal and its relevant Act have been here since 1825 and 1812 respectively. It has been found that some adjacent landowners were seemingly not aware of this and erroneously considered that they had rights over the navigation. Even the Environment Agency appeared initially to be a bit unaware of this act – or unwilling to accept its provisions - but with our constant good willed talks being held with the EA it is considered that we are all making progress. On a more light-hearted note, or even food for thought (no pun intended), David Revill finished with a reminder of a local piece of news about Catfield Fen, where a potato farmer is being threatened with having his water supply from a bore-hole being cut off due to the local fen drying out to the detriment of butterflies, voles and otters. This is possibly one example of that which the Minister of the Environment in the EU capital of Brussels meant when she recently stated that the lean towards the conservationists must be changed as it has already badly damaged the economy in Europe. The Trust extends a huge thank you to all who ventured out to visit our evening and for asking questions. YOUR questions make US think and then we ALL learn more about what is going on around us!

Norman Lamb presents prize to winner of his Christmas card competition
At the start of the Autumn term, local MP Norman Lamb wrote to over 60 schools across North Norfolk inviting students to enter his 2014 Christmas Card design competition. He asked for the design to be based on 'Christmas in North Norfolk'. Norman received hundreds of entries, with a wide variety of designs. Earlier this month Norman Lamb visited Sidestrand Hall School to present a prize to the winning design. The talented winner, Jake Ellis, will have his Rudolph artwork featured on Norman Lamb’s Christmas cards for this year. During his visit to Sidestrand Hall School, Norman Lamb revealed that he has produced 2000 cards this year and will be spending most of this weekend signing them! Jake's design will be
going to Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and many others in Parliament.

Ambulance response times better in October but targets still missed
Ambulance response times in North Norfolk showed signs of improvement in October, but campaigners have warned that the figures have significantly varied since April, and that the service is still a long way off reaching important targets. In October 2014 50pc of Red 1 category calls in North Norfolk were answered within the 8 minutes target - up from 42.42pc in September. 37.84pc of Red 2 category calls were answered within 8 minutes - slightly up from the 36.42pc in the previous month. Act on Ambulances campaigners however are warning that the long-term picture still does not look as 'rosy' with the figures significantly missing the 75pc target and figures varying in the months between April and October.

Norman Lamb sends out a Christmas card every year to people who have helped him to do his work as local MP, including many of the organisations that work with his North Walsham team to resolve the problems that constituents raise with him every day. He also sends a card to local schools and care homes. Commenting afterwards, Norman Lamb said “We received some fantastic entries, and I’m really grateful to every child who entered. Picking the winning design was a real challenge, and I enjoyed looking through everyone’s drawings with my wife, Mary and the team in North Walsham. We all agreed that Jake’s design was both festive and funny! I send Christmas cards each year, as a way to say thank you to all those people who have helped me stand up for North Norfolk during the year. But I am incredibly grateful to all those who show their support for me throughout the year, and there are many more people to whom I would like to say thank you!”
There are also fears that there could be a reduced performance over winter the busiest time of year for the NHS - with a number of concerning stories appearing in the press over the last month. Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour's parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said "We welcome the news that October's figures have moved in the right direction - this offers some peace of mind for residents as we enter the coldest period of the year. However the figures for the past six months have not been as rosy and there is a varying picture. There are already warnings about ambulance response times and A&E demand during the winter snap which could have an impact on figures in the coming months. As we come to the end of the year I would like to pay particular tribute to the ambulance crews who have worked with great dedication and passion all year round. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER NEPAL EXPEDITION 2014
Earlier in the year I mentioned that I had helped to sponsor a plant hunting and seed collecting expedition in Nepal by a team of expert botanists and gardeners. The plant hunters are now safely home and I have received a copy of their travel diary and a share of the seeds they collected. Their story contains many highs and lows but they did manage to collect seed from 95 unusual alpine plants. It was a hard and sometimes difficult trek and many of the ripe seeds were in extremely small amounts but my 25 packets contain many interesting varieties and I hope to grow some lovely new things and, as very few of the plants had enough flowers remaining to confirm identification, some surprises too. The expedition started in Kathmandu where the group took a light plane and flew into a small airstrip in the Eastern Himalayas. After two long bumpy days on a twisty mountain road their jeep reached a slightly run-down hostel at the end of a muddy pot-holed track. It was traditionally furnished, with horse hair mattresses and the traditional hole–in-the-floor toilet.
They then started the trek along remote trails on which they did not see another tourist and climbed a very rough and rocky pathway following a glacial torrent. They first saw an impressive stand of hedychiums but whilst collecting seeds they found their bare legs covered in leeches. This was the last day they wore shorts! They next encountered a venomous snake which the sherpas drove off with rocks while warning the group that this species could in fact fly at them. One night they slept on straw mats and mattresses filled with yak hair on the porch of a local house. One member was woken by what he thought was
someone stroking his hand but it was a rat and he had also been bitten by bed bugs. However they also spent happy days taking photos in the thin mountain air and on climbing still higher found a plateau and lake which despite the heavy grazing of yaks held a treasure trove of fabulous flowers. Sheets of the rare Gaultheria trichophylla clung to the large boulders displaying clusters of ultramarine berries, contrasting prettily with the pillar-box red fruits of the equally prostrate Cotoneaster glacialis. There were also seed heads on the plants of the blue Himalayan poppy and also yet another treasure, Rheum nobile, the ‘Noble Rhubarb’, an alpine gardeners dream.
Finally they climbed above the levels where the yaks grazed and suddenly there were the plants that they had dreamed about and only seen in photos including the rare and incredible Megacodon stylophorus, the ‘Dinosaur Gentian’. Only a small number of seeds could be collected of this plant but everyone who sponsored the expedition has received in their parcel a few precious seeds together with seeds of the poppy and rhubarb varieties mentioned above. The instructions recommend that all the seeds be sown immediately onto peaty compost with some loam and grit mixed in. No extra fertiliser is needed. The seeds are then to be covered very thinly with grit or fine gravel, watered and kept cold in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse until spring when most should germinate. Many plants they found had no flowers or other clues to identify them exactly (one packet is labelled ‘Red-Berried Creeping Plant’) and the sponsors have been asked to feed back information on plants they manage to get to flower. If there are any expert alpine gardeners in North Norfolk I would be grateful for any help to make sure that I have some successes. (e-mail rwwilkinson@btinternet.com) Bob Wilkinson
