Local Target Shooting Club gets Funding for Youth Training

Issue 463 31 January 2015

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Target Shooting is enjoying a considerable revival in Britain after Team GB’s success in the last Olympic and Commonwealth Games. In this year’s Commonwealth Games, the British Shooting team’s medal tally was second only to swimming. This success has prompted shooting organisations and local authorities to put more resources and funding into getting young people into the sport so that the next generation of medal winners can start training now for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Dear Margaret,

I am contacting you to see if you can let unpaid family carers know that we may be able to provide them with a free recycled laptop or a brand new PC tablet if they live in Norwich or Norfolk. We can also provide a free basic IT lesson in their own home, if they are unable to get out. Please can you let family carers know about these free services that we can provide, it could change their life. We are all volunteers helping more carers to get on the internet established in 2009. Thank you Kind Regards Wendy Maxwell 01603 340193 support@chill4us.com www.chill4uscarers.co.uk

Local Target Shooting Club gets Funding for Youth Training

North Walsham Rifle and Pistol Club are now part of this programme, thanks to funding from Active Norfolk to run a young shooters’ training programme and from the North Norfolk District Council ‘Big Society’ Fund to purchase club equipment. Starting on 3rd February, the Club will be running courses on ‘An Introduction to Target Shooting’ for young people from 16-25. This training is part of the national “Sportivate” scheme. Trained coaches will provide instruction in a safe but fun environment at the Club’s premises just outside of North Walsham. These sessions will be in blocks of six, weekly sessions of one hour at a time. A small charge will be made to cover the cost of consumables. The Club will be giving talks to schools, colleges, Scouts, Guides and Cadet Groups to explain the programme in more detail, so if you would like them to visit your organisation, or would like to book a place on the Sportivate Taster Sessions, then you can contact Mike Kirkham, the Club’s Development Officer by phoning 01603 739157 or e-mailing him at mikekirkham@outlook.com. You can also log onto the Club’s website www.nwrpc.co.uk for more details. Team GB needs you, so why not take the first step on the Road to Rio.

NORTH NORFOLK CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUB

We shall be holding our 8th Annual St. George's Day Run on 26 April 2015 (National Drive it Day).

This year as usual we will be departing from Station Road, Car Park, Sheringham and finishing at The Royal Estate Sandringham. Once again, the supported charity will be East Anglian Air Ambulance. As a club we have always been very well supported by both members and non members alike with a total of 300 vehicles attending last year. We are quite happy for other clubs to join us on this very important event in the Classic Vehicle movement - after all why keep your pride and joy hidden, let the public see some of these lovely cars on the road. As a Club, we look forward to seeing both old faces and new on 26 April - you can download an entry form from the website: www.nncvc.org.uk or contact Christine Sparrow on 01603 781917 email. csparrow57@gmail.com

Don’t forget Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) 23-27th February

As we approach the end of our 25th Anniversary year, we look back on the support that we’ve provided since 1989, through our Helplines, UK-wide support groups and online services – and forward to the challenges ahead in continuing to change the way people think and talk about eating disorders, improve the way services and treatment are provided, and empowering individuals to believe their eating disorder can be beaten. For our “Sock-it to eating disorders” fundraising campaign on Friday 27 February, our fundraisers and supporters will be wearing silly socks, raising awareness of eating disorders and funds to support Beat. We are grateful for the support of leading internet and home shopping company N Brown, owners of SimplyBe and Jacamo, and celebrity support including John Stapleton and Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan.

North Walsham Times 463 January 31st 2015

The children of The Federation of North Walsham Junior, Infant School and Nursery were so appalled by the vandalism to their school last year that they wanted to find a way to put things right. In the October half term, the school suffered two separate incidents of vandalism which wreaked havoc on a classroom and destroyed outside play equipment. The schools and pupils have been delighted by the response and support of the local community, but felt they wanted to do something to raise funds for resources that had been lost. The children are going to be involved in a community art and fundraising project called ‘Project Pom Pom’. The children are aiming to make 5,000 woollen pom poms (with help from the local community!). Pom pom parties are going to be held in school where parents and carers will be invited in to help. These pom poms will be suspended above the school hall to form a moving sculpture. The school will then ask local

Project Pom Pom

businesses and the community if they would like to make a ‘Pom Pom Pledge’ and sponsor a pom pom at the cost of £1. To carry out this project the schools need: Donations of brightly coloured wool A Pom Pom Posse : a group of willing volunteers who would be happy to come into school and make pom poms with the children Kind monetary donations from the local community If you feel you could help in any way, please contact Mrs G Finch, Executive Deputy Headteacher at The Federation of North Walsham Junior, Infant School and Nursery telephone 01692 403013 or email deputy@northwalsham-inf.norfolk.sch.uk

The children from Reception and Year 1 classes at Millfield Primary in North Walsham, were invited to a medieval banquet earlier this month as part of their new Dungeons and Dragons topic. The children began the afternoon with a special parade in front of the ‘Queen’, which showed off all of their finery. They then enjoyed a medieval banquet, dancing and even a jousting tournament took place amongst the ‘Queens’ servants, much to the children’s delight! The morning had been spent making shields, practising their medieval dances and making ‘knight’ lollipops. Ms Brooks, Early phase leader and one of the ‘Queens’ servants, said

Seven Paston Sixth Form College students, a record for the College, received a very special New Year’s present this year when they learned that they had won a place at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities for September 2015.

The seven had to demonstrate outstanding academic ability in their GCSE, AS results and in their predicted A level grades. These together with their personal statement and College reference, got them an interview. Winning a place was down to their own performance in the highly competitive interviews. They clearly were successful in convincing interviewers of their academic credentials and potential. Being part of the College A+ and Oxbridge programmes supported the students in their ambition to aim for the very top. The scheme has been very successful, increasing the numbers each year aiming for Oxbridge or the top Russell group universities. Each year James Keeler, an ex Paston student who is a Senior Admissions Tutor at Cambridge, visits the College to talk to parents and students about life at Oxbridge and how to apply and be successful. A number of ex Paston students who are currently studying at Oxford or Cambridge also return to support and mentor students. Paston’s conversion of applications to places is 45% compared to the national average of just 11%.

The seven students are • Jenna Hatch – to read Natural Sciences at Selwyn College, Cambridge. Julia studied at Broadland High School. • Jenny Hull – to read Human Social and Political Sciences at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Jenny studied at Sheringham High School.

• Nathan Jones – to read Law at Christ Church College, Oxford. Nathan studied at Flegg High School. • Elise Page – to read English at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. Elise studied at North Walsham High School. • Anna Szulfer – to read Human Social and Political Science at Homerton College, Cambridge. Anna studied at Reepham High School. • Sam Webb – to read Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge. Sam studied at Sprowston High School. • Zac Scahill – to read English at Brasenose College Oxford.Zac studied at Sprowston High School.

“I am extremely proud of their achievement in winning places at Oxford and Cambridge and on courses which are highly competitive” said Principal Kevin Grieve.

Double Celebrations for Crayford & Abbs

North Norfolk Nissan dealer Crayford and Abbs are celebrating 10 years of business this month.

The dealership, which is based at Bodham, is planning to mark its anniversary by raising money for two local charities; donating on every sale and service to their chosen charities are The Holt Youth Project and Sheringham Woodfields School.

Sales manager Rupert Fox said ‘For us at Crayford and Abbs, it is a great feat that we have managed to portray the benefits of running such an efficient vehicle given the infrastructure we have in the area’. For more information about the Leaf and Nissan ranges visit Crayford and Abbs in Gypsies Lane, Bodham (telephone 01263 588160).

The birthday celebrations come close on the heels of their success as one of the country’s top dealerships for selling electric Leaf cars in 2014. The dealership came top of their league of 28 rural dealers nationally, having sold 21 Leafs last year, more than double their target, which combines with other targeted achievements in 2014won them a luxury holiday in South Africa for Kevin and Elaine Abbs and a gala Dinner in Birmingham, hosted by Nissan Directors for Rupert, James and Paul from the sales team. The Leaf award is a particularly impressive achievement bearing in mind that rural north Norfolk does not have anywhere near the number of charging points as in the cities. Crayford and Abbs have been working with the NNDC to increase charge points in our area.

The Happisburgh 13

Sunday 18 January was just like any other day for Happisburgh Lifeboat volunteers. As usual the crew and shore crew arrived for their normal Sunday morning practice and training.

It was at about 9am that they got a call out for a search and rescue mission. You could say that there was nothing unusual in that but in this case it was not to involve a launch at all or even to a casualty on the beach or cliffs.

On this occasion, they were asked to help track down The Happisburgh 13, a group of Gloucester heifers, who had cleverly escaped from a farm.

Never let it be said that our volunteers are not adaptable, kind-hearted and willing to help their community. So it was that a large percentage of our volunteers, together with some local farmers, set off in search of the bovine beasts. This involved trudging over fields, through hedges and over ditches in their hot pursuit. After about one hour 9 of the heifers were found. That proved to be the easy part as it took another 3 hours to persuade them to return home.

The remaining escapees were found with the help of other farmers and helpers a little further afield at East Ruston. They were detained

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station He arrived at the Station to take photos of the station, beach, crew and Senior Helmsman as part of his project.

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers welcomed Jack Lowe to the Station on 15 January as part of his Lifeboat Station Project. 14

Using a 108 year old camera, taking the photos onto glass it was a lengthy process compared to today’s modern photography equipment. The Station volunteers were very interested in the whole process of this Victorian way of taking photos. Jack spent most of the day at Happisbugh before moving onto Cromer.

ready for collection (and maybe interrogation!) the following day.

In a rural community it is not unusual for farm animals to go on a walkabout but slightly unusual for the RNLI to get involved. We are always pleased to help our local comMOOnity in any way we can providing it does not interfere with our main purpose of saving lives at sea. If you would like to join our team you can become a volunteer and help with crew, shore crew, Coastal Safety Team, the RNLI shop or fundraising. If you would like to know more you can either call in at Cart Gap, phone 01692 583269, email happisburgh@rnli.org.uk or visit our website “rnlihappisburgh.org.uk”.

Jack’s intention is to create a show, whereby each glass plate is hung geographically in order around a huge room. As the audience stands in the middle of the venue and looks around, the sensation of seeing the entire coastline of the British Isles captured on glass will be extraordinary.

In creating The Lifeboat Station Project, Jack is bringing together his love of photography, the sea and the RNLI to produce a stunning, unprecedented body of work.

ple contact us for help. With fewer cats becoming pregnant at this time of the year, now is a good time to contact our neutering line to see if you are eligible for help.

Branch of Cats Protection League

Every cat that comes into our care, visits one of our vets for a health check as soon as possible after arrival. Once they have established the cat is in good health and advised if flea and worm treatments are required, they will vaccinate and microchip the cat (if this has not already been done). If the cat has not been neutered, an appointment is made for this to take place. Kittens, however, will not been seen, unless they have a health problem, until they are 9 weeks old, which is when they have their first vaccination. They will not be chipped until they have the second vaccination which can be Photo : Ani, about 3 years old, very after they have left for their new homes. Because we believe friendly boy who just loves lots of cuddles vaccinating and chipping are important, we do pay for this to and attention be done.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We do on occasion have cats come into care that have been chipped but have found in the past that the owner’s details have not been kept up to date and sometimes the owner has not even registered their details with the micro chip company. It is important to remember to do this, especially when you move home, to make sure that should your cat go missing after the move you can be reIn January 2015 we launched a new programme to include the new united with it.

Lepto4 Vaccination

Vaccinating and chipping our cats is very important as is neutering them. As well as the health benefits for the cats it does mean that there are not so many unwanted and abandoned cats needing our help. It is one of the aims of Cats Protection to encourage people to neuter their pets and as a consequence the vouchers we now offer those who require help have been increased to £40 for females and £25 for males, which goes a long way towards the actual cost of the operations and will hopefully mean more peo-

Lepto4 vaccination. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of the infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine will protect dogs against four strains of Leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise of this potentially fatal disease.

The vaccine will be given to ALL dogs seen for vaccination from 2nd January 2015, this will require an initial course of 2 vaccinations so if your dog is only in for its routine booster you will need to come back in 4 weeks for another injection. This second injection will be FREE OF CHARGE and is essential to maintain cover for your dog. The timing of this second vaccine is important so please make sure you attend both the appointments given to you. Puppies will automatically be started on the new vaccine and will also require a course of 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter. NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS MIXED FORTUNES FOR NWSCA

In the Premier division, Outlaw’s Steve Patterson, John Hancock (Jnr) and Rick Edwards hosted NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Howard Lupton and Andy Beane. Lupton won the first two sets of the opener, but then Patterson took time to loop and hit as he made a comeback to win 14-12 in the fifth and he used his power on both wings to take a maximum with no more sets dropped. Beane saved three match-points as he came back from 7-10 to win the decider 12-10 against Edwards and Beane also led Hancock 4-2 in the fifth before the Outlaw spun more to take the decider 11-7. Lupton beat Edwards in straight and teamed up with Beane for a doubles win in four against Hancock and Edwards but the remaining games were won by the hosts in straight as Outlaws won the match 7-3. Tom Baldock-Yaxley took Lupton’s place as NWSCA then had a derby match against NWSCB’s Simon Halliday, Dennis Elliott and Paul Price. Halliday recovered from 5-10 to take the first 13-11 against Baldock-Yaxley and almost repeated the feat in the fifth as Baldock-Yaxley again led the decider 10-5 before closing out the win 11-8. NWSCA won the match 10-0 but five of the battles went the distance including all three of Halliday’s singles who lost the last nine points from 7-2

up in the fifth against Beane. The NWSCA player enjoyed the reverse of Halliday’s pain as he won each of his singles in five winning fast short rallies against Price and edging out Elliott 12-10 in the decider. Also in the division, NWSCD’s Ray Howe, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone hosted Shark’s Steve and Matt Hudson and Chris Marshall. Matt Hudson nearly made a comeback from two sets down and had a couple of chances to force a decider but Stone took his third match-point to win 15-13 in the fourth and some good hitting saw him to a maximum with no more sets dropped. Kirkup beat Marshall in straight but it was a story of missed chances for him against the Hudsons as he missed four set-points in the middle of his defeat in straight by Matt before failing to convert one of two match-points as Steve won the last four points of his 12-10 in the fifth win. Howe took a maximum but was taken to five by Steve Hudson and teamed up with Stone as their doubles win saw NWSCD win 8-2 and the team have climbed to just above NWSCB after winning their derby match 7-3.

In the First division, Barracuda’s Ray Amo, Rex Parfitt and Keith Register hosted a NWSCC team who included Tom Wardle play-

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL AT WESTOVER VETS

I hope everyone and their pets made it through the festive period without too many accidents or illnesses. As vets, we see a recurrent theme of emergencies this time of year. For those of you who weren’t already aware chocolate and raisins are both very toxic to dogs and, with a dog’s sense of smell being over ten thousand time more sensitive than ours, it takes more than a little wrapping paper or tin foil to hide Christmas treats and mince pies! If you ever notice that your pet has consumed anything toxic it is important to get them to a vets as soon as possible so we can try treat them, often making them sick, before they absorb too much into their blood stream. On one particularly frantic day in advent I saw four cases of chocolate toxicity in a couple of hours, including a Rhodesian Ridgeback that had managed to eat the contents of 11 selection boxes, which is quite a feat in itself! Fortunately, most dogs, once treated, make a full recovery. Cats on the other hand are usually less interested in what is under the tree and

ing up for the injured Chris Johnson. Paul Brown took a maximum, Richard Porritt took a brace but lost out to Register in five and the duo teamed up for a doubles win in four as NWSCC won 6-4. NWSCE’s Joel Lodge and James and Ben Lester hosted Crosscourt’s John Welsh, Keith Beswick and Wren Thatcher. James Lester took a maximum which included a win in five against Beswick plus a fine win as he controlled Welsh to win 11-6, 11-9, 11-8. Beswick edged out Lodge 9-11, 12-10, 13-11, 10-12, 14-12 and Welsh took a brace but with Lodge beating Thatcher in four, Ben Lester picking up two wins both in four and the Lesters winning the doubles 11-6, 9-11, 14-12, 12-10 against Beswick and Thatcher, NWSCE recorded a 7-3 win against a team much higher than them in the League table. Stuart Hook took a brace as NWSCE lost 7-3 to Dropshots including a good win in five against Rhodri Oliver. Finally there were three matches for NWSCF this fortnight – after losing 7-3 to LCC Lobsters, the team won 10-0 against both Mundesley B and LCC Seals.

more fascinated by what is on it, especially in terms of tinsel and baubles. Most recently, we treated Pippin, a three year old Maine Coon cat, with a penchant for plastic and anything that rustles. He had helped himself to the plastic bags used to store his owner’s gifts and they had led to an obstruction within his intestine. He was brought in to us vomiting and unable to keep food down and x-rays demonstrated a blockage in his small intestine. After quite major surgery to remove the problem Pippin made a full recovery and is back with his owners causing mischief, but no longer with any access to anything he might chew! Most of us know our pets well enough to watch out for such bad habits, but it is worth remembering that not all dogs are as well-behaved as they seem and not all cats are as clever as they look!

NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GROW YOUR OWN ‘ELEPHANT’S EARS’

Their common names do not flatter bergenias. The dull greyness suggested by their nickname ‘elephant’s ears is very misleading as they can provide colour for much of the year from both their foliage and their flowers. Another name, ‘Pigsqueak’, derived from the sound of a thumb rubbing across the shiny leaf surface, is hardly more enticing. Unfortunately they have tended to be dismissed alongside privet and ferns, pampas grass and monkey puzzle trees as more suited to shady Victorian gardens.

At this time of the year colour is always welcome in our gardens and the first snowdrops and aconites always lift the heart. In front of the Priory Maze there are some very early daffodils already in bloom by mid January and beside the wall of the old police station in Sheringham the long bed of bergenias already have their pink flowers. This variety is B. Cordifolia but as mentioned below there are newer better varieties.

Bergenias are indeed one of the season’s most valuable plants – not only for their flowers and their richly coloured architectural foliage but for their value as foils to other winter plants and bulbs. For sheer brilliance of colour the variety ‘Eric Smith’ has long been a star. Created by one of the most famous breeders, and named after him when introduced in the 1970s by Beth Chatto; in some seasons the leaf colour is almost scarlet. The leaves are upright, the plants form tight clumps, and surrounded by

snowdrops, the effect is dramatic. This variety has deep coral-pink flowers.

A little more open in habit, ‘Bressingham Ruby’ has redpink flowers and a burgundy tone to its leaves and more arching, slightly rippled foliage, while the neat, small-leaved ‘Abendglut’ also features more open growth with magenta flowers and leaves that are wine-coloured on the backs for months before the whole plant becomes purplish in winter.

I also understand, that there are two variegated varieties although I have not seen them growing anywhere. ‘Tubby Andrews’ is streaked and splashed with gold and cream on a green background and cream-edged ‘Solar Flare’ is more hosta-like, with a green centre and an irregular cream and yellow margin.

Bergenias are undemanding, growing happily in shade or sun as long as the soil is not too dry. Colour is often better in less fertile soil. Nip off old foliage as it turns brown so plants look smart before the surrounding spring bulbs flower. Mulch annually. When clumps become gappy lift, discard the older woody growth and replant the young strong shoots. Look out for vine weevils which can be troublesome.

I leave the final words to the famous gardener, Margery Fish, a great fan of bergenias, who confirms their great virtues , ‘They do not mind at all where they grow, in sun or shade, in soil with or without lime, in walls or paving, fat living in rich beds or starvation in poor soil. You can pull bits off at any time and each piece will grow without the leaves showing any sign that an operation has taken place, in fact I cannot remember ever seeing a wilting bergenia.’ Bob Wilkinson

Rotarians bring water to a Zambian village

Thanks to Rotarians in North Walsham, Mombo, a remote village in Western Zambia, now has a safe water supply for the first time ever. The village is on the edge of the Zambesi flood plain where it meets the Kalahari desert.

The link between the Rotary Club and the village was inspired by a meeting with Father Ignatius Harrison, former Provost of the London Oratory, now based at Walsingham. Over the last year Rotarians, with their partners St Nicholas’ Church, North Walsham, and Mundesley Infant School, have supported the village school in Mombo, including funding the construction of 30 tables and chairs for use in the school which until then lacked even this basic equipment.

Dr Geof Harrison, a member both of the Rotary Club and St Nicholas’ congregation, has visited Mombo twice, most recently in November when his host was Father Francis.

One of the purposes of his visit, besides keeping closely in touch with the project, was to bring materials for use in the school, such a paper and pens. He also brought pictures drawn by children from Mundesley Infant School, which were treasured by the Mombo children, who in turn sent pictures back - using some of

The school has over 100 pupils aged between three and six. Besides providing education, it also gives the children a much-needed daily meal with financial support from North Walsham Rotary club and St Nicholas’ Church.

High among the needs of the village community, identified in discussion with Dr Harrison, was for a supply of safe drinking water. Following his visit the Rotary Club sent £1,200 to Father Francis to pay for the construction and installation of a borehole, which now provides clean water for the children and villagers, who previously fetched their drinking water from streams at the edge of the Zambesi flood plain. The coming of water to the village has been a source of great excitement. Something it is hard for us to understand when we “have it on tap”.

Zambia celebrated 50 years of Independence from the UK in October 2014. It is a poor country where per capita income is on average about 25 times less than it is in the UK. Life expectancy in Zambia is about 52 years.
