Dear Jo,

KITALE have been hand delivering lovely, prepared meals, snacks & cream teas for anyone who orders, and they have been absolutely brilliant at doing so for such a long while.

How lovely to browse in a shop rather than on a computer screen.

We start to look forward to things getting easier and enjoying more fresh air and, dare I say, fun.

They are tasty, well-cooked, good portioned meals, that come on stated time to your front door. A happy face says enjoy your meal, socially distanced and the folk who take your phone orders are polite, attentive & more than happy to help. Spend £10, delivery free.

But we still have to play our part in making sure things follow a smooth the road out of lockdown. Don’t forget those second jabs, keep using those masks and stay a safe distance from others when out and about. We can’t afford to throw away all our hard work now.

A BIG THANK YOU to them for putting this valuable provision available to all who use this service in such awful lonely relentless days of Covid 19.

This summer will still be different to normal, but lots of events are being planned to take place in innovative ways with our safety in mind and I’m sure we can all find ways to enjoy our newfound freedom and stay safe at the same time.

Thank you to You Jo & your team who continue compiling, editing & delivering to every household in North Walsham throughout this deadly pandemic which has ensured a connection to fellow human beings with news, information, appeals, adverts, reassurance & much, much more. The photographs are a welcome enhancement to the magazine.

Dealing with estate debts

by Anna French, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + Storr

If you are an executor of an estate, your duties involve not only dealing with the assets of the deceased, but also any debts that have been left behind. Any estate may have debts, even if the deceased was wealthy – it is reported that Michael Jackson died with around $500 million worth of debt.

It is the duty of the executors to make sure debts are repaid.

impact of debts on beneficiaries Naturally, if an estate includes debts, this will reduce the amount that is available for distribution to the beneficiaries.

If the estate is solvent, there will be sufficient funds to pay all debts, but the amount the beneficiaries receive will be reduced. If the estate is insolvent and the debts outweigh the assets, then the beneficiaries will not receive anything.

As an executor you should keep the beneficiaries informed and manage their expectations about what they will inherit.

For a solvent estate Once estate debts have been paid, you will need to think about the beneficiaries. A legal procedure called abatement applies

wherever assets are insufficient to pay all the legacies in full. If this is the case, the residuary beneficiaries will not receive anything, as the payment of legacies takes priority over the residue of the estate.

A ‘residuary beneficiary’ is a beneficiary who has been left a percentage of what's left over in the estate after all legacies (specific gifts and sums of money to named individuals) have been distributed and all debts and expenses have been settled.

debts. This order is set out in law and it is important that you understand the difference between the types of debt as well as the order itself.

For example, you might leave £10,000 to your niece and an antique vase to your best friend (legacies) and leave your residuary estate, which could include your property, to your partner.

Personal debt cannot normally be inherited, providing the debt was incurred in the sole name of the deceased. But there are exceptions, such as if the debt was guaranteed by a third party or if the deceased had gifted money close to their death which could be seen as an attempt to avoid payment to creditors from the estate.

When dealing with an insolvent estate, you need to follow a strict order for paying

an insolvent estate If an estate is insolvent, the available assets are insufficient to pay all the debts of the deceased. As executor, you must obtain full details of all those debts. You should also consider placing statutory notices to creditors in a local newspaper and the London Gazette. This would provide protection if any further unknown creditors come forward in the future.

If you are worried about any aspect of an estate for which you have been asked to act as executor or administrator, we can offer you expert assistance, whether you are yet to begin the process or are already well on your way. Cromer Minor Injuries Unit reopens

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit reopened on Monday 29 March as part of the restoration of services at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It comes after the Cromer team, including ten Emergency Nurse Practitioners, were redeployed to support the Emergency Department at NNUH during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in January. Alice Richardson, Emergency Department Matron, praised the MIU team for their support and flexibility during the most challenging period of the pandemic. “It has been amazing to have the Cromer MIU team with us to cover all our Emergency Nurse

Practitioner service and we have not had to supply a doctor to the minor injuries area at NNUH. They have also been helping with triage and initial assessment. They have been working in their scope of practice working in a different environment and have adapted really well. They are all really excited to be getting back to Cromer and reopening the MIU,” she said. Cromer MIU, in Mill Road, Cromer will be open seven days a week and its usual hours of 8am to 7.45pm from Monday 29 March. If you are unsure about whether Cromer MIU is the appropriate place for your healthcare needs, please call 01603 646230.

Children's diabetic check-up service opens in Cromer

Thanks to NNUH Specialist Children’s Diabetes Nurses and the Cromer outpatient team, families living in and around Cromer will no longer have to travel to Norwich for one of their routine condition check appointments.

As well as an annual check-up, children with diabetes have to have their overall glucose levels checked every three months. Until recently this involved up to a 50-mile round trip for some families from the coastal town, and surrounding area, to NNUH for the test, which takes only a few minutes.

The face-to-face test has always been carried out by NNUH health care assistants (HCAs) in a routine clinic appointment but because of the Covid-19 pandemic that in-person contact was reduced. A drive through service was created at NNUH so that children could extend their arm out of their car window, have the finger-prick test and wait for confirmation of a result.

Cromer Hospital Diabetes Team

Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Suzanne Lee, wanted to set up a local service out of Cromer Hospital, so has developed a similar service there too. Training was arranged by the NNUH diabetes nurses to enable the clinic to be run by the outpatient nurses in Cromer.

Suzanne said: “We wanted to create a local service similar to that which we were running at the N&N. We did the training four months

The Minor Injuries Unit at Cromer can deal with: • Minor head injuries (with no loss of consciousness) • Simple wounds • Simple eye conditions, foreign body, corneal abrasions • Minor burns • Soft tissue injury • Bites and stings, with no associated complications, or acute reaction • Simple fractures • Fingers that may be broken or dislocated

ago and made sure it was embedded and that staff were fully confident in running a clinic so the Cromer team can run this independently.”

Since then, the team has run three clinics. Suzanne said: “I am really pleased with how teams from both hospitals have worked so well together to set up this service. This really is so much better for our patients in North Norfolk.” Mum of two, Heidi Skillen, from Cromer, has benefited from the clinics now working out of her local hospital. Before and during the pandemic she would have to take her daughter Ava, 12, out of Cromer Academy, for the majority of the day to take her to NNUH for her check-ups – a situation Ava found stressful. Heidi also has a nine-year-old son, Harry, who needed to make the journey as well as he could not be left with anyone during lockdown.

Heidi said: “This has been great for me. I am a single parent, and it is so much easier to go to Cromer Hospital. I don’t have that hour round trip; parking issues and I can take Harry with me. He can sit in the car with a phone, so he can call me if there are any problems.”

Work starts on NNUH Ambulatory Procedures Unit

development is part of the trust’s goal to be a provider of high-quality health and care services to our local population, and to be a leader in the redesign and delivery of health and social care services in Norfolk.”

Work has started on a £2.9m walk-in day procedure unit at NNUH as part of the trust’s building improvement programme.

The project will see cutting edge equipment housed in three neutral pressure treatment rooms, as well as associated support areas to enhance services for ambulatory patients attending for procedures. NNUH Chief of Surgery, Dr Tim Leary said: “The new unit will bring significant improvements for our patients. A dedicated team will be able to carry out more procedures for patients who need surgical procedures under local anaesthetic.

Other building projects currently underway include construction of the £6.5m Jenny Lind Hospital paediatric theatres to provide a purpose-built theatre complex for our younger patients up to the age of 16 and a £750k extension to the emergency department to install changing rooms, showers and toilets for staff, which is due to be complete this summer.

“Innovative regional anaesthetic and surgical technique will expand the range of procedures that can now be completed safely and comfortably without the requirement for general anaesthesia. Many of these procedures are currently carried out in the main theatre complex, so their completion in a dedicated ambulatory unit will release capacity to treat additional patients requiring more complex procedures.”

There should be minimum disruption for patients visiting the trust for treatment as clinical services will continue during the work. This project will reduce ongoing operation costs, through best use of existing space alongside a one-off capital investment of £2.9m. This is also another example of a building project which the NNUH Board has chosen to fast track. It is due to be completed by mid-summer with the first patients due in before the autumn.

Shona Hatton, associate director at Influence, said: “High Street Heritage Action Zones are such a key part of the future for our towns - especially post the pandemic – and are often driven by a strong local community interest. Revitalising and regenerating our high streets whilst reinstating the heritage roots is critical to their success, now and in the future.

Outstanding Companion-Based Care

“North Walsham is a vibrant market town but has been waiting for a long time to bring forward a high street public realm project. Now that it’s here, myself and the Influence team are honoured to have been selected to work on this important project and are pleased to be supporting North Norfolk District Council’s in-house team.

“Our previous experience in delivering High Street Heritage Action Zones has given us specialist knowledge and understanding of the challenges and huge opportunities in our high streets -and we are using those assets to re-imagine the physical and social environment in North Walsham - to enable it to be a prosperous town where people want to live, work and relax.”

Master planning and consultation will be led by HETA - a studio of architects, designers and thinkers. Their focus is on people and how to create better, more meaningful experiences for them. Having completed a site visit the team will implement a programme of consultation and community engagement to see how the people of North Walsham want to see the space in the town centre used.

Our aim is to make you look forward to our visit, be it a cup of tea and a natter, a shopping trip or a fantastic day out. We offer tailor-made companionship care packages to cover all your companionship and socialising needs. Our Happy Companions are fully trained, vetted and have many years Ensuring you feel socially engaged, maintain a great of experience working within the care sector. feeling of wellbeing and never lonely or isolated.

This work is a vital part of the programme’s wider “placemaking” objectives, inspiring people to re-imagine and re-engage with the town centre as the heart of the community. It will focus on making the town centre a destination which embraces its heritage

and community, creating a shared space people can enjoy, take pride in and encourages others to visit.

The Council and partners will seek to hear what residents, businesses and visitors want to see in North Walsham and foster a sense of community that maximises shared value by making it easier to move around the town centre and improve the appearance and quality of public spaces, starting with work which will see the improvement of the Lokes and alleyways that connect different areas within the town centre.

As part of this, the Council intends to purchase a piece of land adjacent to Black Swan Loke, a long-standing derelict area on an important pedestrian approach to the town centre and is exploring options to maximise the potential of this busy route.

Cllr Richard Kershaw, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Growth, commented: “We are very pleased to be working with Influence on this project and have been impressed with work they have done in other market towns.

"This will be an exciting, inclusive project to bring lasting improvements to the fabric of North Walsham and to bring visitors to the town for the benefit of local businesses.

"In addition to this, the Cultural Programme will soon get underway will bring together various societies and groups in and around the town to help celebrate the rich history of North Walsham.”

The Heritage Action Zone grant will also provide an opportunity to review the options for the most suitable use of the Council’s New Road site and the Listed buildings on it (known as The Cedars), and the role it can play in the regeneration of North Walsham town centre. In the short-term, essential repair work is set to begin soon.

The project is part of Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme to renew and revive town centres in England, with match funding from The Council and additional funding secured from the New Anglia LEP’s “Getting Building Fund”.

Over the next four years, the programme of work is designed to secure lasting improvements for the town’s historic core and the communities who use it. This will be achieved through a range of both physical interventions, such as the placemaking work and Building Improvements grants (opening soon), as well as community led programming to bring the town’s rich history and stories to life.

Do your eyes give your age away?

Erase signs of ageing, safely and quickly. Latest treatments at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

Effects of ageing skin gradually creep up. You feel good but the mirror tells a different story! Women and men believe the body part that most reveals their age is the eye area, followed by hands and facial skin. OK, you have tried botox but it can only do so much. Although it is a wonderful tool in experienced hands, it is not going to address all the changes that occur with ageing.

How can we help you reduce first signs of ageing around the eye area? There are three main changes that occur with ageing. Loss of volume, loss of skin elasticity causing sagging skin and sun damage that affects the skin quality. Essentially we can address all three elements of ageing resulting in total rejuvenation and natural looking results.

Careful use of botox and fillers or fat injection can restore volume reduce dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle over activity. Another revolutionary technique has been tear trough rejuvenation with hyaluronic acid fillers such as restylane. New injection methods now allow us to achieve excellent results without any bruising or downtime. Your own fat is an excellent filler to provide volume even in eyebrows and temporal hollows.

We can use lasers to create a new skin and reduce and reverse sun damage. This is only possible with a laser treatment. Finally if required we can use surgery to lift the brows or remove excess eyelid skin.

How do you perform eyelid skin tightening or skin removal to address more advanced changes of skin ageing? Eyelid skin tightening remains a very popular procedure. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures worldwide. Ageing changes in this area are almost universal. We also perform brow lift surgery.

With our technique the procedure is performed under pure local anaesthesia. We have also learned that fat removal is to be avoided unless there is obvious prolapse or bulging of the fat pads. This provides a natural look. Use of local anaesthesia allows a quick recovery whilst use of the laser reduces bleeding allowing a much faster recovery and minimal bruising. Although the scar is very fine and placed in a natural eyelid crease, we can also use the laser a few weeks after the procedure to further improve the surgical scar if required. Page 1

Norfolk Hall owners open walled gardens and host artisan craft fair in aid of charity

The owners of a secluded 18th century Norfolk Hall are to host an open garden and bijou craft fair in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association on the 29 and 30 May 2021. Over 21 local artisans will be showing their hand made wares.

Mother and daughter, Pauline Harrold and Lara Lacey who live at Thurning Hall, Thurning between Reepham and Holt have hosted weddings at the Hall for over 26 years as an approved licensed civil ceremony venue. However, it is only the second time they have opened the garden to the public.

Pauline who is 85, established the gardens when she moved to the hall in the 1960s. She still loves working in them, planting and designing helped by Lara, her husband George and their three young children. There are over 150 spiced of roses with largely cottage style planting.

Pauline first saw the hall when her late father, G.W Harrold a member of a well-known known Norfolk farming family acquired it during WW11. She remembers standing on the bridge which overlooks the lake and it was surrounded by Land Army girls and American Air Force men who were based nearby. The Hall had previously belonged to the Rev, Whitwell Elwin a direct descendent of Pocahontas and her husband John Rolfe who designed and had built the magnificent Booton Church, near Reepham, Norfolk.

The Hall and grounds have also been used as a location to film “The Mill on the Floss” by

George Eliot and “A Fatal Inversion” by Barbara Vine as well as appearing as the backdrop for many national newspapers and magazine shoots.

Kelly Boston, community fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease Association says “We are delighted to have the support of Lara and Thurning Hall and wish them every success for their garden party. The funds they raise will help us to continue our vital work in providing support for people affected MND, campaigning to raise awareness of the disease and funding research to find treatments and ultimately a cure for MND.”

Open 29th & 30th May 2021, 10.30am -4pm Entry £3pp, children under 10 free. Sadly, no dogs but guide dogs, thank you. Refreshments available.

Young artist’s mural turns hospital brick wall into a wildlife wonderland

A dull brick wall at a Norfolk hospital has been transformed into an idyllic rural river scene by a talented young artist. Sophie Cane’s mural is brightening the outlook for patients, staff and visitors at North Walsham War Memorial Hospital.

But her biggest work yet will also help launch her art career having just been awarded a Master’s degree with merit in communication design from the Norwich University of the Arts, following an earlier BA in illustration.

Weather Forecast

April is likely to continue the mixed conditions of the past three months with wild swings in temperature and a good chance of wintry conditions in the first 10 days including frosts. Average daytime temperatures 10-13 but if you are in the sun and out of the wind it will begin to feel quite warm.

May will offer more in the way of warmer settled conditions as the mass of cold air in the northern hemisphere which created so many record-breaking cold events is whittled away although the process will be slow. Average daytime temperatures 13-15.

June will continue the improvement in conditions and temperature as the colder air further retreats northwards. First real warm days will begin to show their hand now and again. Average daytime temperatures 15-17

Get your pet “summer ready” with Toll Barn Vets

With the recent Lockdowns many of our pets have gained a few extra pounds but don’t worry – Toll Barn Vets is here to help! Exercising is a great way of getting your pet active and also a great way of bonding with your pet. Regular exercise helps keep the heart and lungs healthy, build muscle, maintain a healthy weight and provide mental stimulation. Don’t forget exercise is not only for our canine pets; cats can be encouraged to exercise by playing with toys or using “treat balls” to give them their usual food ration, whilst rabbits can be encouraged to exercise with foraging games.

We understand it can be really difficult to monitor our pets weight and resist those appealing eyes asking for treats however, research from the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) suggests 92% of owners were unaware that their pet was an unhealthy weight. This is important because as little as 20% extra weight can significantly increase the risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory disease and certain cancers.

We understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to help your pet achieve their target weight and even to work out if your pet needs to work on their waistline. Our friendly team of veterinary nurses are offering free of charge nutrition clinics for our patients which include body condition scoring, advice on diets and feeding as well as general health and exercise advice depending on your pets condition. The clinics are free and available for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. If you are concerned about visiting the practice then we are also able to provide these appointments via telephone and video. To book an appointment with our friendly team please give us a call on 01692 407126

‘A light at the end of the tunnel…’

Pets, much like humans, come in many different shapes and sizes and relying on numbers can be dangerous. When assessing a pets weight it is not just the number on the scales which is important. It is equally as important to use a body condition score technique rather than just relying on the numbers. It is far better to use a body condition score which assesses characteristics such as ease of feeling the ribs and waistline to determine your pets ideal weight.

Age Concern (North Norfolk) continues to provide home-cooked lunches, delivered to older members of our local community. These meals are significantly subsidised and made possible through grants from local fund providers. The Trustees, Staff and Volunteers are grateful for this support, which has ensured we have been able to keep our Staff productively employed during this pandemic even though we had to temporarily close the Day Centre in Cremer Street to Client visits.

We also wish to thank our loyal Clients whom we continue to support and hope that soon we will all be able to meet up at the Day Centre for lunch, activities and a chat. It seems a long time since the Centre was able to operate at full capacity but with vaccinations progressing well and cases reducing week by week, there does seem to be a light at the end of what has been a very long and difficulty tunnel.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Obviously, we are delighted when people choose to give one of our cats a new home but realise that we do not always have one that fits a person’s lifestyle. If we cannot help, other branch of Cats Protection or another charity (RSPCA for instance) may have something suitable. We do, however, still want everyone to have a good experience when offering a home to a cat, be it pedigree or moggy and will therefore continue to advise people to be cautious when buying on-line.

Another instance of unscrupulous people offering a pet for sale on one of these websites came to our attention when Stephanie recently received another call. This time a very distressed caller advised her that they had bought a kitten on-line which had health problems from the first day in its new home. Unfortunately, after several visits to the vets the poor little kitten had to be euthanised. All the family had to show for their experience was a vet bill.

Looking at the websites it is obvious from the prices being asked that the sellers are more interested in making money from the cats than caring for them. If you have decided you would like to offer a home to a cat or kitten, a good place to find lots of advice is the thecatgroup.org.uk website. This has lots of very useful information (including a Kitten Check List) and has been produced by a collection of professional organisations dedicated to feline welfare, including all the major charities involved in cat rescue. The Kitten Check List would be especially useful for someone considering purchasing a pedigree kitten and hopefully, by reading this, they will avoid being “sold a pup”! Many of the kittens sold on-line as pedigrees do not appear to have been registered with GCCF or one of the other bodies working to ensure that pedigree kittens meet the breed standards. Reputable breeders will also sell kittens at a lower price if they do not want them to be used for breeding, thus ensuring the characteristics of the breed are maintained and health problems avoided.

Among the other interesting subjects which “thecatgroup” offers advice about is Cats and the Law and the benefits of neutering kittens at four months old, something that Cats Protection is committed to. The website Ollie, 6-7 years old recently arrived provides useful in care via the vets information for cat owners old and new and is one I regularly refer to.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Vaccinations for Pets too! Having watched the incredible vaccination campaign rolled out nationwide and seeing it first-hand locally it seemed an appropriate time to touch upon vaccinations in our pets. Many of the same discussions are had regarding safety, efficacy and importance of animal vaccinations as we are seeing in the media over recent months regarding human vaccination. It goes without saying that no vaccinations or medicines are completely free from the possible risk of adverse effects, but the evidence for their benefit is overwhelming.

In our canine population diseases such as distemper and parvovirus which caused so many fatalities prior to the 1960’s have almost been eliminated through vaccination. For this reason core vaccinations in cats and dogs have been permitted and encouraged through the second and third lockdowns. We have been able to leave booster vaccinations for up to 3 months in dogs and a month in cats before they need restarting, but the message is to try and avoid letting them lapse completely.

Vaccinations have extremely low risks associated with them, but the diseases we vaccinate against are often fatal. As a pet owning population we have become complacent because we see so few cases of diseases like distemper and parvovirus, but in reality this is because effective vaccination has almost eradicated them. It is, however, important to realise that some viruses can persist in the environment for years and so are impossible to ever completely erase them, such as parvovirus. Other viruses are prevalent on the continent

and can be brought in to the country via imported dogs and other viruses, such as Distemper, can exist in the wild fox population.

As a result it is always wise to either vaccinate your dogs and cats, or at least to blood test them annually to ensure that they have adequate antibodies to the viruses. Here at Westover we use a vaccination protocol that avoids over vaccination by only using certain components every year, those diseases which do not require annual vaccines are only given 3 yearly, or when required.

If you are unsure whether your pets vaccinations are due, or how long you can leave them for safely before having a booster then contact your vets and they should be able to provide you all the information you need.

Sheringham RNLI

Shop Re-opens

The RNLI Shop in Sheringham High Street will open again on the 12th of April. Carolyn Price, the volunteer manager, is much looking forward to welcoming back her volunteer colleagues and the public. Thanks to the support of local people and visitors, last year the shop was top of all the RNLI shops in the UK. It has now been fully re-stocked with the new season's range of RNLI products, and everyone is raring to go.

The RNLI is a national charity that relies wholly on public subscription. The RNLI has maintained a lifeboat in Sheringham continuously since 1867. It is a proud tradition. All in the Sheringham RNLI community are volunteers, be they shop workers, boat crew, shore crew or administrators. All, in equal measure, give their time to the cause of saving lives. There is a role for everybody. New volunteers of all ages over 16 are always needed and new volunteers to join our very successful shop staff are particularly needed as summer approaches. For further information, do call into the High Street Shop once it opens. You will be made very welcome.

The Grove Cromer - nearly there! Welcome back to Gallery Plus

As I sit writing this the hail has ceased and the April sun is shining brightly; we've just been shovelling thirty tonnes of new gravel around our front drive to get ready for reopening.

The gallery looks AMAZING and is FULL of COLOUR with SO much new work on show!

Paintings, prints, glassware, ceramics, sculpture, and jewellery all presented in a bright and airy gallery flooded with natural light.

Although this last year has been tremendously tough for the hospitality industry, us Cromer folk are resilient and - hopefully - the town has weathered yet another storm and is standing by to receive all the lovely visitors we see each year.

Featured is Amelia Mills, an abstract artist based on the North Norfolk coast. Inspired by the ocean and aerial landscapes, she creates vibrant and Underwater Magic II . Amelia Mills dynamic paintings by pouring and manipulating artist resin mixed with acrylics onto handmade panels.

We have a new project that will be opening in May. Sundown is our second restaurant at the Grove; two giant tipis put together to provide seating for up to 100, all enjoying hand made, stone-based pizzas, seafood platters and Norfolk tapas. It's really exciting and we look forward to welcoming you all in a few weeks' time.

Council Support for Preparing to Re-open Your Business

North Norfolk District Council recognises that many businesses will be busy making arrangements and adjustments to their businesses ahead of projected re-opening dates; many businesses may be feeling uneasy or unsure how to safely re-open their doors and welcome customers back into the premises.

And of course our double AA Rosette a la carte restaurant is still going strong, together with afternoon teas on our new terrace. So please do come and see us this summer!

To alleviate some of the stress of working out how to re-open safely, the Council’s Public Protection team have put together some checklists and information on best practice for making sure your workplace is as safe and COVID-19 compliant as possible.

Richard Graveling www.thegrovecromer.co.uk, 01263 821463 95 Overstrand Rd, Cromer NR27 0DJ

This includes guidance on completing a COVID-19 Risk Assessment, a Foods Standard Agency re-opening checklist and a list of COVID-19 priority actions for shops and retail businesses.

The business pack contains specialised information for outbreak control, itemised and relevant to each sector operating in the District.

Public Protection & Commercial Manager, Tracy Howard said: “The Team have responded to business feedback and produced a pack of resources that allows them to follow the guidance in a simple format and reopen safely”

The full list of guidance can be found on North Norfolk District Council’s Support and Advice for Businesses webpage. Following the recent Government announcement of the "road map" out of Lockdown, the COVID -19 response – Spring 2021 Guide was published on the 22nd February 2021.

This document sets out 4 steps to the lifting of restrictions, with a projected final date of no earlier than 21 June where it is hoped the majority of restrictions will be lifted. The Government has published updated guidance on Working Safely for the Visitor Economy.

Given the national position and the increasing demand for health professionals and scientists, we are branching out and offering the same fantastic package to young people interested in health careers. We've spoken to a wide range of employers in the health sector and UEA and have used this research to devise a really exciting programme that will prepare young people for careers in the sector and - crucially help them to find the niche that appeals to them.'

Get a Career in Health!

The pandemic has changed everything. And one of the things that has changed is young people's career choices.

Every night on TV, students have seen how crucial the NHS is and how fulfilling health careers can be. This has translated to a surge in applications for health courses. UCAS, the university admissions service, has reported a 32% increase in applications for nursing and significant rises in interest for other health careers.

To help Norfolk students get into these careers, Norwich based University Technical College Norfolk (UTCN) has introduced a new Health Futures Programme. This two-year course is aimed at current Year 11 students who are looking to progress to Sixth Form study and commences in September 2021.

Alex Hayes, Headteacher, said: ‘For several years now, we have been sending our students

‘Our programme mixes relevant academic study with practical work experience and extensive employer involvement. It is designed to show young the wide range of opportunities available and to help them to find their niche. It will prepare them for apprenticeships or progression to university.'

The Health Futures course is the equivalent of 3 A-level and provides access to either apprenticeships or university courses in the

health and health science areas. UTCN is based in Old Hall Road, Norwich and will be holding an open event on the 19th of June. UTCN has an impressive student success rate; in 2020, 60% of its students left to take up apprenticeships or full-time employment, and the other 40% went on to take a place at university or other places of further education.

Alex Hayes said: ‘We are delighted with the take-up of places so far. If any young person is interested in a health career, but perhaps unsure of exactly where that might take you, I would urge you to come and talk to us. There are so many hundreds of varied careers available.'

Covid-19: Why having a Will in place is so important

On 5th March 2020 the first death from Covid-19 in the UK was confirmed. At that date just over 100 cases had been recorded and the Prime Minister thought the outbreak would cause the country "a substantial period of disruption."

One year later and in the past 12 months over 125,000 people in the UK have died from a disease that none of us had heard of at the start of 2020 and which has now killed over 2.6 million people globally.

Statistics show that approximately 60% of people in the UK don't have a Will: that's 75,000 of those people. Applying those statistics, 75,000 people who died in the last 12 months in the UK from Covid-19 died without a Will: 75,000 people!

75,000 people not only left families distraught and upset through their untimely deaths but who then compounded that grief by the family discovering that person had not made a Will, causing unnecessary stress and upset at a time they needed it least.

One of the most responsible and straightforward matters that we can do is to have a Will in place; an up-to-date document which is properly drafted by a Solicitor and can easily be located on death.

Losing a loved one is stressful and upsetting, particularly if this death was unexpected. If you die without a Will your family will need to get legal advice and dealing with matters is usually more costly and complex. A Will is the only legal way to specify what you want to happen to your child if you die before they are 18. A Will is especially important for parents with young children to appoint a legal guardian. A Will is the only way to leave assets to your partner and your partner's children if you are unmarried; unmarried partners or "common-law" spouses receive nothing if you die without a Will.

If you die without a Will the law decides who gets what according to certain rules. These are called the rules of intestacy, which can be can be arbitrary.

Throughout the ongoing restrictions of Covid-19 it has been possible to prepare a Will; we have met clients in car-parks, outside windows, in their own homes and remotely via Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp and Facetime. Meeting clients remotely has become the 'new norm' as we've responded to the challenges of this pandemic and delivered exceptional service.

The coronavirus pandemic, more than any other event in our recent history, has forced us to re-evaluate our lives: it has killed people,

forced people to lose their livelihoods, restricted our freedoms and controlled our lives; it has not and cannot stop us putting our legal affairs in order and this is something we wholeheartedly advocate and the Government recommend also.

With one of the largest Wills, Trusts and Probate departments in Norfolk, we have a reputation for providing the local community with an extensive range of private client services. We pride ourselves on providing Wills that give you complete peace of mind and legal assurance that your wishes will be carried out once you are gone so you know your family will be taken care of.

Secret Centre Lemon Cupcakes

Now that we are allowed to meet up with friends in the garden and we have hopefully honed our baking skills over lockdown, here is a lovely recipe to go along with that cup of tea and a natter. Whenever I make these, people are very impressed with them and yet they are so easy and quick to make. Even if your piping skills are a little hit and miss, as Delia says, if good ingredients go into a cake it can’t help but taste delicious.

ingredients 6oz/170g self-raising flour 6oz/170g caster sugar 6oz/170g softened butter

1.5 tsp baking powder 3 large free-range eggs Grated zest 2 large lemons 1.5 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 jar of good lemon curd

For the buttercream 8oz/225g icing sugar 3.5 oz/100g softened butter 2 tsp lemon juice Lemon jelly decorations or yellow sprinkles to decorate if desired

Method Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Sift the flour and caster sugar into a large bowl, add the butter, baking powder, eggs, lemon zest and lemon juice and beat together with a hand mixer or food processor until light and fluffy.

the Lighthouse Project is supported by norfolk County Council's Public Health Department and norfolk's Clinical Commissioning Group and has been created as a result of a great need for suicide prevention support in norfolk.

Fill each paper case to about ¾ full with the mixture and place in the oven for 20 minutes or until springy to touch and golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Meanwhile make the buttercream. Beat together the icing sugar, lemon juice and butter until light and fluffy, you can adjust the texture with a little extra icing sugar if too wet or an extra teaspoon of lemon juice if too stiff. When the cakes are cold, take a core of sponge out of the middle of each one with a sharp knife and put to one side. Take care not to cut all the way through to the bottom. Fill each hole with a teaspoon of lemon curd (or pipe in the curd) and place the plugs of sponge back onto the cakes. Pipe or dollop a swirl of buttercream onto each cake and decorate as you wish. Best enjoyed with friends! Jo - Editor

Local people help UK COVID-19 research pass one million participants

More than one million participants (1,075,000) have now taken part in COVID-19 research across the UK, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and NHS can proudly announce.

Local people across East Anglia have played an important role in reaching this remarkable milestone, with more than 32,000 participants taking part in nationally prioritised COVID-19 studies supported by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Eastern.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the NIHR has supported more than 180 studies into COVID-19 right across the country. Of these, more than 100 studies were also funded by the NIHR, amounting to more than £108 million given to dedicated COVID-19 research.

The milestone of one million participants has been achieved across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales by members of the public, NHS doctors and nurses, NIHR research staff and researchers, regulators, life science companies, research funders and policy makers. Across the Eastern region, 16 NHS hospitals have supported and delivered this vital research by helping their patients to take part.

Their efforts have enabled worldleading research into therapeutics such as dexamethasone and tocilizumab, delivery of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, and more. Ground-breaking platform studies such as RECOVERY, PRINCIPLE and REMAP-CAP have all made a significant contribution to the global understanding of COVID-19.

These discoveries have significantly improved outcomes for people who get the virus, especially those most at risk of becoming severely unwell and hospitalised. Without such significant support from the public, this vital research would not have been possible.

Surajit, who is one of the Norfolk residents who is taking part in a vaccine trial at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, said: “Everybody wants to try and do their bit, don’t they? Because I have type 2 diabetes and my background is Indian, I’m in a slightly higher risk category, so I couldn’t get too close to the frontline, but I really wanted to do something. Ultimately, we all benefit from research, so I’m glad I’ve taken part. Hopefully it will benefit mankind, and if the vaccine is approved for use it would be nice to know that I contributed.”

Dr Helen Macdonald, Chief Operating Officer for the NIHR’s Clinical Research Network in the Eastern

region, highlighted the importance of research to find vaccines for COVID-19: “We’re so grateful to Surajit and others who volunteer to take part in research, particularly such important vaccine trials. It’s only with their help, and that of our country’s extremely proficient research community, that we have been able to prove the safety and effectiveness of the COVID vaccines we already have and, hopefully, do the same for the latest ones in development.”

professionals for their involvement in COVID-19 research. Local people are encouraged to join in with their own thank yous to anyone they know who has been involved in COVID research in some way.

The campaign includes a series of video ‘thank yous’ to participants, researchers and NHS staff. These celebratory videos feature well-known figures including England’s Chief Medical Officer Prof. Chris Whitty and NHS England Chief Executive, Sir Simon Stevens, and draw attention to the incredible work and dedication that led to this research.

Thanking our local research and NHS heroes To coincide with the announcement of one million participants, the NIHR and NHS have jointly launched the #ResearchVsCovid ‘thank you’ campaign to celebrate the efforts of participants, researchers and healthcare

If you would like to help researchers test the latest vaccines to be developed for COVID-19, find out more on the NIHR’s website, www.bepartofresearch.uk

North Walsham District Councillors' Report

In our April report there are three actions which we would like to highlight for you.

Midland road Car Park

The first of our items is the purchase by the District Council of a piece of land at the site of the Midland Road Car Park. The land has been bought from the County Council and this will mean that the whole of the car park area will now belong to the District. Historically, the car park has been used by people working within the town, as well as visitors and passengers who are travelling to and from the station. The District Council's portion of the car park has been administered in co-operation with North Walsham Town Council as a free car park. It is our hope that this arrangement will now be extended to the whole of the car park and that the future of the Midland Road Car Park as a free car park will be secure.

black swan Loke

You may have read too that as part of the North Walsham Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) project the District Council has bought a derelict piece of land lying beside Black Swan Loke. This purchase was paid for out of the funding for the HAZ project and with the agreement of the funding body. One of the objectives of the project is to improve the approaches into our marketplace, making them

more appealing and welcoming. Bringing this small area into District Council ownership will help us in achieving that goal.

the Memorial Garden

Our last item concerns the North Walsham Memorial Garden. Readers may remember that there is a longstanding planning agreement which should provide for restoration work within our 1949 Memorial Garden. The Memorial Garden forms a part of our park and over the years it has lost some important features of its original design. We would like to report to you that North Norfolk District Council and North Walsham Town Council have been working together to enact the planning agreement and breathe a little of the original spirit back into the Garden. If there is more which you would like to know, please do get in touch with us. Our email addresses are on the Council website. If you would like to learn more about the North Walsham Heritage Action Zone project, please do look in the Latest News section of the District Council's website - "Placemaking to begin for the North Walsham High Street Heritage Action Zone". Thank you, Eric Seward (North Walsham East) Paul Heinrich (North Walsham East) Nigel Lloyd (North Walsham West) Don Birch (North Walsham West) Virginia Gay (North Walsham Market Cross)

Changes are afloat at Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station

we are seeing over one hundred years of volunteering coming to an end.

We have lost one of our longest serving volunteers and four are standing down from their roles on Station.

Jack Hall had been involved with the RNLI at Happisburgh since it reopened in 1965 with one of the first D-Class lifeboats; he helped and supported the Station in so many ways over the years including fulfilling the roles of Chairman and President. He sadly passed away on the 10th March 2021 peacefully with his family around him. He will be sadly missed by the Station and the RNLI for all the years of dedicated help and support.

Tim Gimmer joined the team at Happisburgh on 12th March 2001 as crew, then moved onto Helm of the Station’s D-class. In 2009 he passed out as Helm of the new Atlantic 75, he then had an extension to his service when he turned 55years old, so on the 12th March 2021 after two decades on the crew he stood down. Tim has been crew fundraiser and an ambassador for the RNLI. He also provided the colour party for the RNLI standard at the Annual National Service for Seafarers at St Pauls Cathedral in London on the 15th October 2014. Tim Grimmer, Senior Helmsman was the standard bearer with two escorts, Cubitt Siely and Tony Phenix, both Helmsmen at the Station. Tim was also part of the three Peaks Challenge which took place on the 24th August 2013 together with Christian Larter, Jake Munday, Dave Cato, Will Baker, Danny Cordukes and Justin Arnold. This team left Happisburgh for the drive to Ben Nevis to start the Three Peaks Challenge which involved climbing a total height of 3,407

meters and hiking a distance of 25miles up and down taking 23hours and 14 minutes to complete the challenge. The sixvolunteer crew from Happisburgh have raised £2,500 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Tim Grimmer said “this marks the end of twenty years of service that has been a big part of my life; enjoyable stressful and rewarding at the same time. I would like to thank all the people fundraising and operational that have supported me through the twenty years. The RNLI is a worthy charity to support offering many opportunities to enrich your own life as well as giving you a chance to help others. I hope the Station will go from strength to strength and I wish it well for the future”.

The Station’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, Cubitt Siely, said “this see’s the anniversary of Timmy’s completion of 20 years’ service to our Station, at which point he decided to stand down as Helm. On behalf of myself and the Station I’d like to thank Timmy and the support from his family for his valuable input, as crew, senior helm, fundraising and lifeboat days that has helped put the Station where we are today. Again, to thank his family for giving up so many weekends to feed a passion that becomes part of one’s life. As always Tim, our door will always be open to you”

Jake Munday joined the crew at Happisburgh in 2009, as crew of both our boats then passed out as Helm of the D-Class then also the

Atlantic. He has had to stand down from the crew due to work commitments. He was also part of the Three Peaks Challenge and also completed a skydive with Charlotte Siely. Jake said “I am sad to have to stand down, but my family comes first; I will miss the camaraderie of the Station most and that I will not be there to help the community we served. If things change, I will be back to Happisburgh or another RNLI station to put my skills to good use”.

Colin Fleming joined the Station in 2009 where he helped liaise between the Station and contractors with the new ramp being built. Once this was completed, he became one of the Deputy Launching Authorities. Colin said “it has been fantastic working with such a committed group of people who are there to help others and each other. I joined the RNLI when I finished work; it gave me a purpose in life, not only giving me something to do but being able to give back to the community in so many ways. I would encourage people to join and improve their lives and help others.

Jan Withers joined the Station as fundraising chair last year and has stood down due to a change in her circumstances. Jan was unable to do much for the Station due to Covid-19; she will be missed.

We have also had some changes among our volunteers. Mark Jarvis has now become a Deputy Launching Authority and Lifeboat Trainer Assessor for Shore Crew and Dave Lennox has joined the Station as Lifeboat Training Coordinator. One new crew member and four shore crew have also been recruited.

The Gallant Gardener Growing Tomatoes - April 2021

One of the most versatile, productive and cost saving crops that you can grow are tomatoes. In today’s climate and also the current market, there are varieties that will suit both greenhouse, outdoors and also hanging baskets. You can grow them in open ground, grow bags, large containers or indeed hanging baskets. You can also grow them in running water which is called hydroponics which is quite technical.

In 2019 we visited Chateau de la Bourdaisiere in the Loire, France, there they have the world’s biggest collection of tomatoes. On each tripod they grow three different types of tomato and there were an amazing variety of colours, shapes and sizes. www.labourdaisiere.com/en/portfolio/the-national-tomato-conservatory

It is not too late to grow your own tomatoes, by starting them off on a warm windowsill in a pot of fine compost and putting a polythene bag over them to keep it moist. The seeds will germinate within a few days. Gradually take off the bag and keep them out of direct sun until they harden off a bit or they will scorch. You can buy already developed young plants ready to plant out in a greenhouse or conservatory soon.

When the tomato seedlings develop a further set of leaves, now is the time to pot them onto a 3” or 10cm pot of general-purpose compost. This plant can be grown on until you want to plant it out into its final location or indeed potted on to a bigger container, a pot the size of 18” would be well suited to growing

!!

it to a mature fruiting plant or indeed a grow bag would suit three plants.

As the plant grows it will put outside shoots from the leaf joint. If you want a single stem plant, these need to be nipped out. In between the leaves will develop what we call trusses of flowers, these will develop into the tomato fruits, once they start developing you will need to feed the plant. A good plant food that is diluted with water is called Tomorite, other makes are available. This needs to be applied once or twice a week. As the plant grows it will need support and using canes or thick pieces of wood the plant can grow beyond 6 feet tall or two metres. Once you have about 6 trusses on the plant now is the time to nip the top out. This will help the fruit develop.

However, if you have a lot of room you could grow it as a bush. What you would need to do is put a circle of wire mesh around the plant to keep the branches and fruit off the ground, supporting the whole plant, then you do not need to nip out the shoots coming from the leaf joints.

You can now grow a wonderful, sweet cropping tomato which is purely for growing in hanging baskets, put three plants in a large hanging basket, filled with good compost. They will need watering every day and fed at least twice a week as the plants are very hungry. Once the frost is no longer a problem they can go outside. Tomatoes originated from Peru and were brought to Europe by the Spanish, so they love the heat. They are from the same family as potatoes. When the fruits become ripe they will need picking or they will split and develop bacteria. If at the end of the season you still have green tomatoes, you can put them on a windowsill, and they will ripen.

Tomato plants are susceptible to white fly or red spider mite in a greenhouse, you can get parasitic wasps called Encarsia Formosa to eat the insects. Pots of basil and marigolds are said to help keep the insects away by their strong smell. The plants can develop yellowing on the leaves this is a sign of magnesium deficiency which can be dealt with by watering with Epsom salts. Other diseases range from botrytis (grey mould), if they are grown outdoors near potatoes, they can develop blight. This will destroy the plant and fruit.

Worstead Village Festival 2021 Cancelled Statement from Worstead Festival Trustees

It is with great sadness that the Trustees have made the decision to cancel this year’s Worstead Festival which was due to take place on the weekend of 24th & 25th July.

“This last year has been extremely difficult for us all and we all really wanted the festival to happen,” said the Chair of Trustee’s, Jane Bond. “It’s unlikely that a government decision, allowing the festival to proceed, will be made before June 21st. This would give insufficient time to complete arrangements to safely deliver the festival.”

“The aim of the festival has always been to help local charities,” Mrs Bond went on to say. “With that in mind the trustees have decided to grant money to local good causes instead of putting it towards organising a festival this year.” Jane Bond

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society lives – and many thanks go to Zoom!

The club held a competition intended to be the second Prints competition, but adapted to a digital competition judged and viewed via the internet. The specified topic was ‘People’ which caused some grumbling among the wild-life experts and the landscape specialists – but in the event there were 77 competing entries.

Bricklayer by Lizzie Wallis

The judge, who did not have to travel up from Beccles, was Michael Lloyd and he patiently commented on every image. He was asked to appoint one Gold (winner), one Silver and one Bronze and also was free to allot Highly Commended and Commended to some runners-up.

The Gold award went to Paul Richards for ‘Cart Wallah Taking a Break’. No doubt taken on his photographic tour of India, this showed an Indian chap with his load, taking a break. Silver was for Lizzie Wallis and ‘Bricklayer’ - another Indian with a load of bricks – taken when she and Paul Richards were in India. And for Bronze, Andy Bamforth’s ‘Riders’ - a troop of horses and riders galloping across a beach.

He has extensive business and commercial experience and currently works with two North Walsham Charities, including the Good Neighbours Scheme. For many years a Liberal Democrat, he became disenchanted with the current regime in North Norfolk, and believes that the Labour Party represents the best future for his children and grandchildren at a time where austerity measures have hit funding for the health service, education and the care of older people. The Conservative and Lib Dem parties have become bankrupt and there is an urgent need for change. The Labour Party is the catalyst for that change.

Software rolled out that truly helps the front line With both forces looking to their future front line policing plans as the new financial year begins, one investment from 2020 that has had a truly successful outcome is a new software application named OPTIK.

This application, which is accessible to frontline police officers remotely on a tablet or phone, searches across multiple policing systems at the push of a button. The access given ensures the right information, exactly when needed and enables more informed, reasoned decisions to be made based on details and background which is immediately available.

Functions within the new software include the scanning of fingerprints of suspected offenders on the street enabling the identification and arrest of wanted criminals. Officers will be able to plug in a small fingerprint reader to their device and OPTIK will return results from immigration and criminal databases within a minute or two. This particular function has already seen great success in pilot trials

and has helped officers to bring offenders immediately off the streets who may otherwise have evaded justice.

With over 1750 people across both forces able to use the software licences at any one time, the new application is seen as something that provides the most benefit to our communities. It is both more efficient and more effective than paper-based solutions, which often involved lost time and double keying, and officers who have access to OPTIK will now use it over many existing processes

ACC Simon Megicks, who led on the introduction of the project, welcomed this final rollout, saying:

"OPTIK, is a mobile policing solution for Norfolk that offers a wide range of ‘on the job’ functions, saving frontline officers’ time and assisting them in completing numerous policing tasks.

"My aim with this project was always to offer officers a valuable resource which would assist them greatly in their day-to-day role yet Cleaners Required also assist the public Holiday Letting in Gimingham and with this final rollout I believe we From May to October. have achieved this. Mainly Fridays 10-4 but other hours available.

£10 - £12 per hour depending on experience. Self employed and paid weekly. Must be Reliable. Please call on 01263 721301 or 07557 586427

"OPTIK is an intuitive application with a simple

dashboard-based design. Once you are logged in, all the functions are available from the buttons on the dashboard. We could not have achieved this investment in policing without the support of our Police and Crime Commissioners for which I am grateful.”

Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner Lorne Green said: "To tackle the crime affecting our communities in the 21st century, we need to look at the 21st century technology available to us.

"I believe strongly that modern technology will drive improvements in investigations, proactive patrolling, the protection of vulnerable people and management of offenders. Having a mobile and accessible workforce will also help to improve visibility of our police service and investment in digital policing makes it easier for people to contact the police wherever they are in the county.

"I pledged to ensure that our police have the necessary tools so they can operate more productively, efficiently and safely and so we can build resilience for the future face of policing and so I welcome the roll-out of this technology across the county.”

A summer of weddings?

Norfolk's Chief Constable announces his retirement

Norfolk Constabulary’s Chief Constable Simon Bailey has announced he will retire in June after completing 35 years’ service with the police.

Mr Bailey has led the force for the last eight years and since 2014 he has held the National Police Chief’s Council portfolio for Child Protection and Abuse Investigations. Since 2016 he has been the NPCC lead for Violence and Public Protection.

After a year of uncertainty, with so many couples having their weddings plans dashed, derailed, or just cancelled, there are great hopes that couples wishing to tie the knot can finally do so this summer, surrounded by their friends and family.

Many ladies have told Occasions Hat Hire in North Walsham that they’ve spent much of lockdown ‘dressing down’ and are now really looking forward to ‘dressing up’ for big occasions which are now thankfully back on the horizon. So, how to look your very best this summer, particularly if you’ve several events lined up in quick succession? The answer is a stunning hat or fascinator, perfectly matched to your outfit. But why buy for just one occasion, be it wedding, garden party, or special event, when hiring is such an economical and more satisfactory option?

Occasions Hat Hire pride themselves in offering individual attention and advice on colour, size and fit of a wide range of hats, hatinators and fascinators. Indeed, many ladies who didn’t think hats suited them have since discovered that with the right advice, they really can complete their look.

With 300+ hats to choose from in a kaleidoscope of colours and styles, plus stylish hand bags and gloves to complete any outfit, you really will be spoilt for choice.

To arrange a free and without obligation appointment, please telephone Eileen on 01692 405543 or book online via www.occsionshathire.co.uk where you can also see some of the beautiful hats on offer.

Mr Bailey said: "I have been extremely proud to lead Norfolk Constabulary as Chief Constable for the last eight years. However, after 35 years in policing, the time has now come to look to pastures new. So, following careful consideration, I have made the decision to retire on Wednesday 30 June 2021.

"During my tenure as Chief Constable, the force has faced many challenges, including the last year policing in a pandemic and I am indebted to the support given to me from a dedicated and talented team of chief officers, alongside that of our Police and Crime Commissioner, Lorne Green.

"I also want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of my officers and staff for their hard work, commitment and dedication in policing our county and making Norfolk Constabulary a force to be truly proud of.

"As the NPCC lead for child protection, violence and public protection, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a dedicated and passionate group of people, leading our service’s response to some of the biggest challenges within law enforcement today. Together, I believe we have made a real difference and immensely proud of the work we have achieved.”

Director of Rugby James Knight. “I’m looking forward to seeing our new signings in action, all 15 will get game time.” The 2021 -22 League season, which following their promotion in 2019 -20 will see them play in London & South East Premier, is scheduled to start on 4th September. Home pre-season NW VikingsTraining July 2020 friendlies versus Shelford for the Vikings and Raiders are scheduled for 21st August.

Slowly and cautiously rugby is returning to Scottow Park, adhering strictly to the RFU’s Government approved “Return to Rugby Road Map.” First the Vikings returned to training in the last week of March, then the Easter Holidays saw two three-day Rugby Camps before the Youth, Minis and Valkyries resumed on 11 April. The new School Term should see the Club’s Schools Programme recommence; currently four Schools had confirmed their involvement.

The Vikings have three friendly matches in May under amended rules designed to reduce contact. Two games are versus Holt, home on the 1st, away on the 8th, whilst on the 15th they travel to Shelford. On 19th June they play Cambridge University again away, hopefully by then normal rules will apply. “Be great to play again even under the temporary laws,” said

The team walking round the world virtually made it back to Scottow three days ahead of the 80-day target. In London they passed by the Reform Club – closed of course due to Covid! They followed the 18,226-mile route recognised by the “Guinness Book of Records” walking a total of 34,867,157 steps.

NORFOLK & NORWICH FESTIVAL CONFIRMS FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE 17 - 30 MAY 2021

Daniel Brine, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Norfolk & Norwich Festival has confirmed that the 2021 Festival will go ahead between 17 – 30 May this year. Following the government’s announcement on Monday 22 February, the Festival, which was due to start on 14 May, has pushed its start date back by just three days.

The 14-day event is set to be a specially created one-off adaptation including outdoor and socially distanced performance, art and music as well as a digital strand.

Daniel Brine said: “We are delighted to be able to say that the Festival is going ahead. We have been working for 12 months on a special Festival that could take place safely in COVID times and hope, subject to the scheduled easing of restrictions that we will be able to deliver on all our planning. We will be taking every responsible precaution, working with the local authorities and making the programme as safe and adaptable as we can. We will begin making performance announcements

over the coming weeks and are sure there’s something within the programme that everyone will be able to enjoy.” Mr Brine also revealed that the 2021 Festival organisers and partners will make the vast majority of the programme available on a free or ‘pay what you want’ basis.

“This is just one of several radical changes we’ve made in 2021. We’re aware that it has been a tremendously difficult year for everyone, in all sorts of ways. While it’s not a sustainable business model beyond this year, the approach allows as many people as possible the chance to access and enjoy the Festival and the collective experience and healing power that art and events of this nature bring. We’re able to do this in part due to the steadfast support of Arts Council England, Norwich City Council and Norfolk County Council. And we thank a number of wonderful sponsors and supporters who share our ambitions. We’re excited that we can begin our recovery from 17 May.”

Sainsbury’s Donates to Local Charities

It’s nearly a whole year now since charities and local community fundraisers have been able to have coffee mornings, fetes, fayres, fun days, tombolas, bazaars or even raffles. Sainsbury’s North Walsham usually has many requests for prizes and other support for these local good causes but not since winter 2020 and probably not for some months to come. This February, Sainsbury’s larger supermarkets have been allocated charity funds to donate to different groups who could make the best use of it, even in lockdown, for the good of the whole community. It was emphasised the stores choice should be local, inclusive and touch as many lives as possible while the sociable fundraising activities we normally support are just not happening. Sainsbury’s North Walsham chose three main charities to benefit:

The North Walsham Community Shops, to whom other groups may apply for funding, and who are saving food waste at The Community Fridge.

The Festival will feature a programme of music, performance, visual arts and literature in venues and outdoor spaces across Norwich and Norfolk. All Festival events will be in line with government guidelines. To stay in touch with latest news and programme announcements visit nnfestival.org.uk or follow the Festival’s social media channels.
