Service Honours War Dead at Hospital Built in Their Memory

Toys and Tins Appeal returns for Christmas

Continued from front cover... The original War Memorial Hospital was opened in 1923 following a public fund-raising appeal. It salutes the 99 soldiers from the town and 80 from surrounding villages who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for their country.

People in Norfolk are being asked to share some joy with those who are finding life tough this Christmas by supporting The Salvation Army’s Toys and Tins Appeal.

For the past 30 years, the Toys and Tins Appeal has been helping vulnerable children and families in Norfolk who might otherwise go without during the festive season. Every year, members of the public generously donate gifts, food and toys, which are then distributed to those in need Photo courtesy of The Salvation Army by Salvation Army volunteers.

A memorial stone from the building still proudly stands at entrance to the current building which replaced it, and is the focus of an annual ceremony on November 11.

Veterans, hospital staff and supporters and members of the public gathered for the two minutes’ silence.

Assistant priest the Rev Nigel Paterson led prayers, while bugler Ian Richardson the Salvation Army’s divisional envoy played the Last Post. Wreaths were laid by Royal British Legion branch secretary Sheila Mitchell and hospital Friends chairman Keith Jarvis. Legion deputy chairman William McIvor was standard bearer.

Last year, the appeal helped 6,766 people, including 3,810 children who might otherwise not have had any presents to open on Christmas morning. Major Rosemarie Williams, coordinator of the county-wide appeal, said organisers anticipate the need for support will be greater than ever this year. She said: “I can only imagine the worry and sadness that fills the heart of a parent, when they have very little to feed their family, and there is even less money for the purchase of Christmas presents. In our current financial climate this is the situation many find themselves in.

“The Salvation Army has established a reputation over more than 150 years for helping people who are finding life tough. We endeavour to help as many vulnerable children and families as we are able. Because The Salvation Army is a church and also a charity, it is our desire to bring the Christmas message of hope, joy and light to some of the most difficult situations.”

Rosemarie paid tribute to the volunteers, who socially distanced, and gave up their free time in order to help out in 2021. She added: “This year the sorting of gifts and packing of tins has already begun as the need is opening up before us. We are only able to do this because of the generosity of the public donations of toys and tins and also via our JustGiving page. We are so grateful to all businesses and individuals who support our work locally.” The appeal is promoted by BBC Radio Norfolk, who act as media partner.

Donations can be made through our JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/fund/toys-andtins-appeal-2021 Alternatively drop off toys to any Salvation Army charity shop in Norfolk. Location details can be found via www.salvationarmy.org.uk/map-page

There is also a Toys and Tins donation point in The Forum, Norwich. You can find Santa's Chimney in the Christmas Cards for Good Causes pop up shop located in The Gallery.

Da Vinci’s Flying Xmas

A Note from the editor

By David Abbott

‘Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat…’ well you know the rest. I was thinking about that little ditty, and I think it sums up, quite nicely, what it is all about. Everyone looking forward to good food, company, exchanging gifts and making merry, but also a time of doing things for others. Going the extra mile to include others in our celebrations, helping out those who may not be looking forward to Christmas in the same way as the rest of us.

1502 AD. Xmas Eve. Leonardo was immersed in his studio dashing off a painting of a cross-eyed lady and doing some inventing. Suddenly he looked at his patented clockwork diary, realised the date and that he hadn’t got Papa Ser Piero a present. “I know, I will build him a flying machine,” he thought. “Papa will love that” He dropped everything including the cat and searched the room, found some balsa wood, canvas and a few cogs that were lying around and set to work. Next morning, he hired an ox cart, loaded his machine and headed for the family estate. It was snowing and the Tuscany landscape was a classic Yuletide picture. (Well it wasn’t. I made that up to add some seasonal colour). Papa met him at the gate. “Happy Xmas Leonardo. But why are you going to the tip today? It won’t be open”. Leonardo did his best to explain it was not rubbish but an invention which in 500 years’ time people would marvel at. “Always the dreamer,” said Papa. But being an attorney and notary, he gave his son the benefit of the doubt. Together they trudged up a large nearby hill. Papa was persuaded to sit on a saddle at the front of the machine. Leonardo gave it a shove and it slid off the hillside into the gorge. It didn’t fly. But his father did. “Hmmm,” thought Leonardo as he peered over the precipice. “I must add a parachute to my bucket list.” Papa Ser Piero would always remember this Xmas as the one his son catapulted him down a hillside in the name of science. But at least Leonardo made amends, inventing him a stress fracture device. Papa was so pleased he hit his son on the head with his crutch. No wonder Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards. samX yppaH.

It has been a tough two years causing hardship and isolation for some. So, if you are able, spread a little bit of Christmas to someone you know or support one of the many charities looking after those less fortunate this festive season, as the rhythm says: ‘Please put a penny in the old man’s hat’, large or small, a gift to make this Christmas a little merrier for someone, well, that is what it’s all about, isn’t it? It just remains for me to wish all our readers and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your December magazine. Jo- Editor

Breaking up: dealing with matters amicably for the children by Emma George, Family Services, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

Breaking up can be very difficult, especially if children are involved. Often parents continue to live together until they separate, which can create a toxic family environment. Parents will need to decide where their child(ren) are going to live after the break-up, where they will go to school and other day-to-day arrangements.

This article explores 5 ways to keep matters amicable and act in the best interests of the children.

1. Think before you talk

Don’t talk negatively about your ex-partner in front of your children, whether directly or indirectly. Parental responsibility is a parent's duty to secure the welfare of their child, which is to be exercised for the benefit of the child. If a parent is talking negatively about the other parent they are not acting in their child’s best interests.

2. Discuss contact arrangements

It is important to discuss contact arrangements. The usual arrangement is for children to have a 50/50 split between parents to allow for equal contact, however this is not always possible due to work commitments or if one parent has moved far away. Under these circumstances, parents will often agree to have alternate weekend contact.

If you do not live with your child, think about living locally so that travel arrangements are easier. This way, the child can easily alternate between homes and, if appropriate, mid-week contact can take place. If moving away is unavoidable, consider indirect contact through telephone calls or other means.

3. Stick to a regular routine

A regular routine is important for children, so it comes as no surprise that when parents separate a child’s routine is likely to change. Create a new routine for your child(ren) as quickly as possible. If your child is finding the change difficult, try to communicate with your ex-partner to discuss how you can make things better for them.

4. Talk to your children

Make sure your child is handling the separation and changes well. If they are old enough, discuss their wants and needs. This can help shape future arrangements and determine whether current arrangements are working.

If your child is young, consider talking to your ex-partner about how the separation may affect them as they grow up, and think about possible short-term arrangements which could improve the situation until they get older.

It may be useful to agree on a ‘Parenting Agreement’ which can be regularly altered to reflect the child’s age. This can include, among other things, details about holiday arrangements, educational and welfare needs.

5. If you’re struggling, seek advice

If you are struggling to deal with arrangements amicably, a solicitor can help negotiate on your behalf. Whilst it is important for parents to try and continue communicating, we know that this is not always possible, and it can be helpful to discuss any areas of disagreement with a professional.

If you are going through a breakup and would like to speak to a professional about children or other legal family matters call Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959.

New members are welcome at any time but especially at the free taster rehearsals on Mondays 10th and 17th January at 7:00 pm St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road Sheringham NR26 8SA.

The choir will be preparing for their Spring concert on Saturday 30th April in Cromer. They plan to perform John Rutter’s Mass of the Children alongside Broadland Youth Choir as well as Seasons, a specially commissioned work by Thomas Hewitt Jones.

Alpacas not Reindeer! Age Concern North Norfolk had two important guests to the Day Centre – Bumble and Bee from Bumblebarn, in Beeston Regis.

The 2 year old half-brothers were very well behaved, taking the offers of carrots from the clients and posing for photographs as well as having their thick coats ruffled and stroked. It was an exciting afternoon where clients who

sometimes get agitated in the later part of the day were fully engaged with the activity and were recalling their own experiences of having animals and pets and one lady spoke about keeping and riding horses.

Lots of questions were asked about their care, their diets and how many other alpacas there are on the farm and their handlers were only too willing to give as much information as was requested.

The sensory stimulation of this visit cannot be underestimated for people living with dementia as there was the opportunity to touch, smell, hear their snorts and see these lovely creatures and the many photographs will be a constant reminder.

Age Concern North Norfolk is now gearing up for Festive Season with our Christmas Dinner

A new winter health campaign launches to help people take care of their health Local health and care organisations in Norfolk and Waveney have launched a new “Give Your NHS a Hand This Winter” campaign to help residents stay as well as possible during the cold months ahead.

The campaign aims to encourage Norfolk and Waveney residents to look after their health and wellbeing by preparing for winter illnesses and ailments in a bid to improve health outcomes and help reduce pressure on local health services.

Created in partnership with the local NHS, county councils, district councils and the wider health and care system, the campaign will help people understand how they can best protect their health and support their mental wellbeing during this challenging time, with both COVID-19 and seasonal viruses, such as flu, circulating.

The campaign promotes some of the essential ways that residents can look after their health and wellbeing this winter, including:

• Getting their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations

• Keeping themselves well this winter by staying warm, keeping active indoors and outside, and keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet so they are prepared for common illnesses

• Encouraging use of the NHS 111 service, community pharmacies, Minor Injuries Units, and GP practice services instead of going to A&E

• Supporting people to look after their mental health

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse of NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We are facing a tough winter this year with both flu and COVID-19 both in circulation. Vaccines are the best protection we have against these serious and deadly illnesses. Our flu and COVID-19 vaccination programmes continue at pace, and I want to thank the thousands of people that have come forward to get their jabs already. With this campaign we hope to encourage everyone to get vaccinated when offered, as well as taking up some of the practical health and wellbeing advice to take care of their health and wellbeing this winter.”

Launching during Self-Care Week (15-22 November), the campaign is set to provide timely information and advice on practical ways that people can help to keep themselves well this winter. In addition to information and resources to support people to stay warm and active for their health, the campaign also includes guidance on ways to stop the spread of infectious illnesses like COVID-19, flu, and the common cold.

Louise Smith, Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said: “This winter it is more important than ever that we keep practicing good infection prevention and control measures to help reduce the risk of transmitting and catching viruses. Washing

your hands thoroughly with warm soap and water for 20 seconds, using hand sanitiser regularly, and wearing a face mask while out in public will help protect you and those around you from serious winter illnesses.”

A new online portal

www.winterwellnorfolkwaveney.co.uk

has been created where people will find key information and resources to help them stay well this winter.

Residents will be able to find information about topics such as winter hardship resources, information on what types of health services they can access for their health needs, health and wellbeing advice, as well as mental health advice and support services which can be especially important during the challenging winter months.

Stuart Richardson, Chief Executive of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The earlier people receive support for their mental health, the more likely they are to benefit from treatment. I encourage anyone who is struggling to come forward to get the support they need.

“For people who are experiencing anxiety and depression, talking therapies are most effective.

These can be accessed through Wellbeing either online by visiting

www.wellbeingnands.co.uk or by calling 0300 123 1503.”

For more information on Give Your NHS a Hand and to access the winter health and wellbeing resources, visit www.winterwellnorfolkwaveney.co.uk.

Fluffet Man

73-year-old pensioner Nigel Holmes from Mundesley, Norfolk is looking to get to the top of the Christmas download charts with his home-made recording called Ding Dong Christmas, by Aunty Darling and the Fluffets. Holmes joins the battle for the number one slot with a catchy seasonal sing-along. “Why can’t I compete alongside the others? Dreaming big is my thing,” said Nigel.

The song was created on a home computer in his spare room. “I had so much fun making this that I hope it comes over in the song. With a Kazoo and a few Santa sleighbells I somehow made the whole thing happen. I think it’s because I have imagination and a willingness to experiment.” The video that goes along with the song was also created in the spare room. Filmed on a phone and edited on that same computer. Nigel Holmes is the brain behind Aunty Darling and the Fluffets. A gang of rainbow-coloured puppets that front the song. Nigel tells how they were the result of lockdown boredom. “My wife Brenda and I made the very first puppet from scraps we found in our loft. Foam rubber, glue and fluff were everywhere. Covid didn’t kill off our creativity.”

He admits that when he was a young lad in the church choir, he was always getting told off for singing more Glorias in the carols than he should. Now, many years later, he has been able to do just that. “Aunty Darling gets quite carried away and we hope that everyone will join in with her Gloria, Gloria, Glo-or-or-or-oria chorus.”

“In some ways this is striking a blow for us pensioners. Life and enjoyment don’t stop at a certain age. We still use our brains, can learn about modern tech and are very creative.”

Holmes says that he is fully aware that there are several famous contenders out there this year, but why should that stop him having a try? “Ed and Elton may turn out a polished product, but my sing-along, dance-along, everything-else-along song, made in my spare room, is totally real and full of the Christmas spirit. Something to belt out in the shower. Magical things happen at this time of year. Just ask Santa.” Ding Dong Christmas by Aunty Darling and The Fluffets is available on Spotify and all the regular music streaming/download sites. The video can be seen on YouTube by searching “The Fluffets”.

AP Bodywork Ltd 01692 538498 jayauto123@hotmail.com

The Fluffets first appearance was on TikTok where you can currently view over 100 of their videos. This spread to Clapper, and they are now opening a channel on YouTube. Holmes points out that his puppets and their seasonal song are for everyone who enjoys Christmas. He also says that this group of offbeat characters were already singing odd stuff on social media. “It seemed the obvious step for them to pop up on a larger stage.”

Crash Repairs  Resprays  Panel Beating  Insurance work undertaken 

The song Nigel has created is a mash-up of Ding Dong Merrily mixed with Good King Wenceslas. Then he says, he added some silliness.

Merry Christmas from Toll Barn Vets

Christmas is fun for all the family and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on-site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe.

Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure. They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten. Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Many Christmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets.

Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of

chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached. Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products. When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs. The signs of this can take several days to develop. We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol.

potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!

Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns. Make sure electric lights and candles are always placed out of reach of naughty paws!

Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell. This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine.

Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis.

There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are particularly attractive play things to cats and puppies. If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material. Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also

Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the house but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals.

Festive bouquets often include Lilies but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe has been known to cause collapse, changes in heart rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion. Poinsettia sap has irritant properties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!

Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126).

We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Last time we mentioned the four kittens recently re-homed that joined us from the industrial estate. Their places have now been taken by a further four who already have people interested in giving them a new home. The gentleman who looks after them does not work there anymore but goes each day to feed the feral cats living there. He has noticed that several more adult cats had joined the colony and has an arrangement with Westover to take these cats in to be neutered once trapped. This will be done over several weeks to allow the vets to fit in the operations in their busy workload.

There is good news on the re-homing front too. Norman, Neville, Sammi, Miska and Ezra, all adult cats, plus AJ and Gio, two delightful kittens, have all now left us. We wish them well in their new homes as they have plenty of time to adapt to their new surroundings before the festive season.

As this will be the last article for this year, we would like to thank all those who help to ensure the cats in our care have the very best of attention. Firstly, all those cat lovers who have made contributions of food in our box in Sainsburys, (even when the shelves were quite bare). Also, Morrisons in Cromer, who also made a donation of food to the branch. Many thanks too to Caroline, Irene and Julie, our fosterers, for making sure the cats have the very best of care while with us and Lisa and Fran for helping with cat care at Dilham. Bev, Bren and Sue for their contributions, dealing with the computer tasks, and most importantly Stephanie who has the cat phone and cares for some of the cats as well as all the other tasks that she undertakes. We also thank our vets who have continued to provide an excellent service in spite of a very difficult year. Thank you also to Jo at the Times for helping to promote the work that we do by printing these articles.

Although we have not had any sales, Andrea and Glidy have continued to make beautiful cards which have been sold at the vets and raised

money for the branch. A collection box in Mulberry tea rooms in Sheringham has also provided much needed funds. Barbara, together with a team of volunteers has organised collections at Morrisons (with another one at Tesco’s in Sheringham, this month).

We also have Cats Protection Calendars and Cards available. Arrangements can be made for delivery or collection of these via the normal number. Although not fund raising we do have a wreath in North Walsham Church Wreath Festival featuring some of the cats Sammi rehomed by the branch over the years. Thank you for reading about the branch and the work that we continue to do. Have a Happy Christmas and hopefully, a Healthy New Year.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. If you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

Find us on Facebook: Cats Protection North Walsham Editor’s note: I’m sure all the cats who have been helped and rehomed would add their thanks to all at North Walsham Cats Protection for their hard work too.

Story of the North Norfolk Railway

A new DVD film has just been released giving the story of one of Norfolk’s main attractions. Titled ‘The Story of the North Norfolk Railway’, the DVD of over an hour long traces the long history of this important branch line from its building in the 19th century through to its closure by British Rail in the 1960s and purchase for preservation by the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society soon afterwards.

The DVD includes rare archive film portraying the last days of services at Sheringham and Look East TV news coverage of the rundown of services along the railway and at Melton Constable, once the main depot for the Victorian railway company. A derelict scene at Weybourne station in 1966 shows the massive task ahead of the new heritage railway volunteers as they prepare the railway for reopening in the early 1980s as far as Kelling Heath and then further along the route to the market town of Holt. Up-to-date scenes show the railway in operation today with in depth portraits on steam locomotives and heritage carries in operation along the 5-mile branch line.

Released in time for Christmas, the DVD is available from – www.railwayvideo.com

Winter Festival at NWT Cley Marshes Come one, come all: Norfolk Wildlife Trust celebrates diversity in community at Cley Marshes’ winter festival.

Cley Calling: Community is Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s annual winter celebration of walks, talks, workshops, art and performance, all inspired by the natural world. The festival will be taking place from Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th December at NWT Cley and Salthouse Marshes.

This year, NWT are focusing on the diversity of our landscapes, our wildlife and our communities. Each event focuses on uplifting and spotlighting the experiences of people who have formerly been excluded from conservation; drawing on artists and experts to see how we can all become more inclusive. Talks will take place online and in person; NWT Wildlife Ambassador Nick Acheson will kick these off at the Centre on Thursday 9th December with David Lindo, aka ‘The Urban Birder’, as David shares top tips for birding in towns and cities. Online, NWT will be hosting a digital panel entitled ‘Access for all: How can we make nature conservation more inclusive?’, featuring the likes of Alex Bond, Stuart Buchart and Anita Sethi.

Throughout the festival, art lovers can visit ‘Living Landscapes’, an exhibition by youth-led heritage group NNF Common Ground. This exhibition explores young people’s responses to the array of landscapes

present across Norfolk. Four-piece ensemble The Norfolk Broads will also return for another year of witty and wonderful musical accompaniment to Cley’s landscape on Saturday 11th December. For creative types, artist Ellen Harling will combine foraging, monoprinting and collage to create pieces inspired by Cley’s flora, fauna and landscape in her workshop on Friday 10th December, whilst artist Alice Lee is running an all-ages-welcome Bird mobile workshop on Sunday 12th December.

There are, of course, plenty of opportunities explore the reserve too. Amongst them beach clean circuits and introductions to birding, ranger Ajay Tegala will be leading a guided walk of the reserve on Thursday 9th December, followed by a talk exploring his career pathway. This is a perfect opportunity to quiz him about his budding career as a BBC Springwatch presenter. Author James Mcdermott will also be leading a fascinating writing workshop on the queerness of nature on Saturday 11th December, exploring the fluidity and diversity of nature and how we can alter our interpretations of our world.

Seasonal Reminder

Sarah Sarah Watts Watts

Our case this month is Ralph, a 2 year old cockerpoo who presented to us having eaten some sugarfree gum. Fortunately, his owner was aware of the potential risks of artificial sweeteners and identified that the gum contained xylitol, which prompted her to bring him into the surgery. Although Ralph was made to vomit it was clear he had already absorbed some of the toxin as his blood sugar had already fallen to a dangerous level. Xylitol can also cause liver damage so Ralph was put on to a dextrose drip and kept in the hospital while his blood sugar was managed through the night. Fortunately his blood sugar normalised and although his liver figures remained stable he had to remain in the hospital for 48hrs. Since then Ralph has made a full recovery with no long term ill effects, but it was a rather eventful moment of dietary indescretion on his part!

It does tie in nicely with a little seasonal reminder for all the pet owners out there. Christmas tends to be the time we see the highest number of toxicity cases every year. A combination of the increased number of sweet treats lying around and the type of treats increases the risks. Most specifically raisins (found in mince pies, christmas cake etc), chocolate and artificial sweeteners are the main culprits. For the feline owners out there you need to be careful with tinsel and other decorations that cats like to play with as they can be dangerous if ingested, but also paracetamol and lillies which are very toxic to cats. So keep these things away from your pets and look to spoil them with attention and walks rather than food treats, you don’t want to spend Christmas day at the vets! Cadets Remember

Sunday 14th November saw cadets from 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron ATC attend Remembrance Parades at Badersfield, for the 11am silence and again in the afternoon in the Memorial Park, North Walsham.

One of the biggest turn outs for several years saw around 20 cadets, led by uniform staff and civilian instructors, parade to honour the fallen in military conflicts since World War I.

With most of the cadets having joined since lock down ended, the Squadron was light on experienced cadets, but the standard of Flt Sgt Oliver Godfrey leading the uniform and Squadron at North Walsham. drill belied the inexperience of the cadets.

Flight Sergeant Sophia Webb carried the standard at Badersfield with two very new cadets, Sophie Lev and Ruby Penrose, providing a very professional escort. At North Walsham Flight Sergeant Oliver Godfrey carried the standard with Corporal Noah Webb, and new recruit Josh Candish providing another first-class escort.

Mothers Union - Christmas Gifts

At our meeting on 9th November members were pleased to welcome as our speaker Rachel Hogg from the Benjamin Foundation.

The Benjamin Foundation has its roots in North Walsham and was founded in 1994 by the family of Benjamin who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident. From small beginnings the charity now works across Norfolk and into Suffolk supporting young people in a whole variety of ways. They offer emotional support through one to one talking and listening to young people who often feel they have no voice. Specially trained staff are also able support and advice on education, training and employment. They provide childcare through breakfast clubs and after school clubs such as Kids Zone. They provide positive and fun activities and outings for child carers and a safe refuge for young people in danger of becoming homeless. The very first accommodation for homeless young people was Winston Court which is still a very important asset for our town. A different approach to accommodation is also offered through the Heart and Home Scheme whereby kind-hearted people with a room to spare offer a home to a young person.

December News from Duncan Baker MP

It’s been another very busy month both in Westminster and at home in North Norfolk Dog Theft

Throughout the year, many of you have contacted me with concerns about dog thefts. This heartless crime deprives individuals and families of their much-loved family members and causes huge distress to animals. I responded by successfully arguing for a new Pet Theft Taskforce to be set up. As a result of this work, the government’s new Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill is currently going through Parliament. Alongside powers to tackle puppy smuggling and livestock worrying, the Bill includes a new dog abduction offence: those who steal our faithful friends will face jail sentences of up to five years. This is a great result and thank you to everyone who contacted me about this issue.

Water companies will be obliged to monitor and publish details about water quality, and significant fines will be imposed on companies which continue to pollute our watercourses.

Work on wind farms continues, with some more good news. Equinor has extended its pre-application period for the Sheringham and Dudgeon Extension projects, allowing more time to discuss how onshore cabling can best

It’s been great to visit some of the charities which benefited from my London Marathon run in October, raising over £38,000. It’s been inspiring to see the work being done by the Friends of Roughton School, Ladybird PreSchool Nursery, Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, and Stalham Community Gym. I also enjoyed my visit to Alderman Peel School in Wells, meeting students who were runners up in the Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize for designing a personal pollution monitor called ‘Pura-Sky’.

Climate Change

In the month COP26 was held, there’s been great progress on climate change this month. Over 100 world leaders have now promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 – including Brazil, a vital signatory to the agreement. And – contrary to some reports in the media – Amendment 45B to the Environment Bill was agreed, placing a new direct legal duty upon water companies to reduce and eliminate the release of raw sewage through storm overflows. In an area with six blue flag beaches, it’s vital that our incredible coastline, rivers, and streams are protected.

Employment Law: What you need to know about Settlement Agreements

Sadly, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on businesses has led to an increase in people being made redundant. The Office for National Statistics recently reported redundancy rates have increased faster during the pandemic than during the 2008 to 2009 economic downturn, and with further uncertainty ahead, many employers are continuing to reduce their workforces. This has led to an increase in employees being offered settlement agreements.

What is a settlement agreement? A settlement agreement (previously known as a comprise agreement) is a legally binding, voluntary contract between an employer and employee. The contract provides that an employee agrees not to pursue any claims against the employer in a tribunal or court in exchange for the payment of a severance sum to the employee. A settlement agreement may be appropriate where the employment relationship is continuing, but it is most common for these agreements to be entered into where the employment has terminated (or is about to do so).

Since many businesses have faced financial difficulties during the pandemic, it’s likely that the use of settlement agreements will be favoured by employers. This will give employers peace of mind as it will remove any risks of employment-related claims being brought by

employees and will firmly draw a line under the employment relationship.

What should you do if your employer offers you a settlement agreement? A settlement agreement will not be valid unless the employee has received independent legal advice on the terms and effect of the settlement agreement and in particular its effect on their ability to bring a tribunal claim under the relevant legislation.

As an employee will be waiving their right to pursue any claims, the adviser will consider whether the employee has any claims and will advise on the prospects of success of those claims, along with the potential compensation a successful claim would attract. Under most circumstances, the employer usually contributes towards the cost of receiving that advice.

Whilst the adviser is not required to consider whether the employee is getting a “good deal”, this is certainly something that can be discussed. If the employee wishes to negotiate for an increase in the compensation payment, this is something the adviser can undertake on their behalf.

Meet Head of Department Nicola Strefford Nicola Strefford, Head of the firm’s employment team, has over 13 years' legal experience gained in both private practice and local government. She has extensive involvement in advising on a range of employment issues to

Norfolk Constabulary targets hotspots where people feel unsafe

Officers are patrolling hotspot areas in the county where people have reported feeling unsafe via the Street Safe online tool.

This follows on from Chief Constable Paul Sanford’s pledge to work with communities and reassure people in their local areas with a visible presence in crime hotspots and areas people feel unsafe. This is also part of Norfolk Constabulary’s approach to tacking violence against women and girls and increased concerns over safety following the murder of Sarah Everard.

After our initial launch in October, we have had a total of 405 reports from members of the public via the Street Safe tool, a Home Office pilot scheme up until the end of November. We are using this information alongside crime figures for different areas to deliver a visible presence and will be using drones as an additional measure in some hotspots.

Officers are sharing information about their patrols via district social media accounts under #StreetSafe.

If you would like to report an area you feel is unsafe, we are particularly encouraging women and girls to report, please click on

Cranachan

The magazines and TV programs are full of Christmas recipes at the moment, so I thought I would come up with a traditional Scottish dessert for New Year. If you are entertaining and want something you can prepare quickly and ahead of time, as well as being a crowd pleaser, this is it!

Ingredients 600mls double cream 75g pinhead oatmeal, toasted

6 tablespoons whisky 3 tablespoons honey (Scottish if you can get it) 500g fresh raspberries

Method Spread the oatmeal on a metal baking tray and put under a hot grill to toast for 3 -5 minutes, taking care not to let it burn, then leave to cool. Keep aside a little oatmeal and a few raspberries for decoration. Whip the double cream to soft peaks, gently fold in the whisky and honey followed by the oatmeal. Finally combine the mixture with the raspberries.

Turkey Free Christmas!

Not everyone is keen on turkey for their Christmas lunch, so it’s good to have an alternative to hand that won’t have you slaving over a hot stove for hours. This is an adaptation of my lentil loaf that’s a firm favourite in our house, made festive by the addition of juicy cranberries and chestnuts, both easily obtainable at this time of year. If you happen to have a vegan or vegetarian coming to your Christmas lunch, you can happily give them this, and it’s so tasty that you may find the meat eaters asking for a portion too! Any leftovers can be portioned up and kept in the freezer for a couple of months to provide quick and easy suppers. Make it ahead of time and keep warm, or even the day before and reheat on the day, either in the

microwave or portion wrapped in foil and placed in the bottom of the oven for half an hour. Merry Christmas one and all and see you in the New Year for some more delicious recipes!

Festive Lentil Loaf 150g red lentils, well rinsed 1 large red onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 10 Chestnuts, chopped (use a vacuum-packed packet) 6 sun dried tomatoes, chopped (use oil from the jar for frying) 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped into small chunks Handful dried cranberries Rounded tsp dried sage Flat tsp dried thyme 900ml Veg stock 100g oatmeal (porridge oats are fine) Rounded tsp miso paste, mixed with a little hot water

Spoon the mixture into four glasses and chill for at least one hour, but overnight is ideal. When ready to serve, top with a little toasted oatmeal and a few raspberries saved from earlier. Enjoy! Jo – Editor

Tbsp poppy or sesame seeds (optional)

Gently fry off the onion and carrot in a little oil from the sun-dried tomato jar or use a little olive oil until softened, then add in tomatoes, herbs, chestnuts and garlic and gently fry for another few minutes. Add lentils and stir to coat with oil, then pop in cranberries and veg stock and gently simmer for around 20 mins until lentils are breaking up and most of the water is absorbed. Stir in miso paste, and then take off the heat and add oats to combine fully. Generously grease a 2lb loaf tin with olive oil and add in the lentil loaf mix, pressing down gently with a spoon. Top with a tablespoon of poppy or sesame seeds if you have them. Bake in a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 30 – 40 mins, until piping hot throughout and golden on top. After 10mins, run a knife around the edges and swiftly upturn onto a chopping board. Cover with foil and a clean tea towel until ready to serve with your Christmas Lunch! Carolyn Burn

Christmas Time

Mistletoe with bright red bow, Holly in the hall. Yule log blazing in the grate, Shadows on the wall. Sherry for the grown ups, Something for the kids. Ticking clocks, hanging socks, And droopy, droopy lids. Time for bed, goodnights said, “However shall we sleep”? Snuggle down, eyes shut tight, Trying not to peep. Christmas morn’, not quite dawn, Everyone awake. Santa’s been, his plate is clean, Not one crumb of cake. Around the tree, shouts of glee, Gifts all scattered under. Bright new toys, big round eyes, Alight with joy and wonder. Time to eat, what a treat, With good food on the table. Turkey roast, “Who’ll eat the most”? And pudding if you’re able. Then off to the park, not quite dark, Singing as we go. Arm in arm, what Christmas charm, With moonlight on the snow. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

RNLI Wells receive £300 donation collected in a yellow wellie

James Dye, aged 11 years, has been raising money for Wells Lifeboats for the last three years by collecting donations in a yellow wellie stood on the reception counter at Silverline Marine in Brundall.

Silverline Marine belongs to the Dye family, and James has been collecting for RNLI Wells for the last three years in an old yellow wellie, which used to belong to him as a young boy. He travelled up to Wells lifeboat station with his Mum and Dad, to hand over the recent year’s donation of £300 to the RNLI Wells Treasurer, during a practice launch for the Wells all-weather lifeboat crew.

James, a keen supporter of the RNLI, raised £110 during the first year, £220 in the second year, and during the most recent year he raised a fabulous £300, all through donations from customers who visited Silverline Marine on the Norfolk Broads.

To take it even further, the family business now invites visitors to donate £1 when they fill their boats up with water, to add to the donations already received for the RNLI.

RNLI Wells Lifeboat Treasurer, Lorraine Cracknell, said ‘it is always wonderful to receive donations for our lifeboat station, particularly when they are from children as young as James. We are very grateful to have him as one of our RNLI fundraising volunteers, and we were delighted he could join us to meet some of the volunteer lifeboat crew.’

North Walsham Nibblers

Are you carrying around a few extra pounds that you really would like to get rid of? Are you thinking of getting healthy in the New Year? We could help you out.

We are a relatively new, non- profit group based in North Walsham. We've been running since September. We're called The North Walsham Nibblers. Our aim is to help people who come along to stick to the healthy lifestyle choices that they want to make. Be it to lose weight, drink more water, eat more healthily, we can help you to stick to your healthy choices until they become a habit.

There's no science to our method and it doesn't cost a fortune!

We believe that friendly advice, a laugh, and the chance to talk to someone else who really is going through the same experiences as you helps. That's it.

You can come along to one of our meetings, you pay £3.00, you can be weighed, but only if you want to be. We do not make any record of your weight, that's for you to decide to do, should you wish. We serve hot drinks and friendly banter; we talk about food mainly!

So come along and join us to; share ideas for different recipes, diet tips or advice, food and drinks you've cooked or discovered during the week, including tasty snacks for late night telly watching! Our aim is for all of us to leave our meetings feeling more positive about ourselves and excited about the week to come. People leave happy! We already have over a dozen members and word is spreading fast!

Top Class Service! “Absolutely faultless from start to finish” - Mrs JN

In short, I believe passionately that everyone has the right to have a healthy life. So, if you wish to make healthy lifestyle choices such as eating less fat and sugar then we can definitely help, and I also truly believe that it shouldn't cost a fortune.

Please give us a call to discuss how we can get you moving

We have no merchandise to buy, no books, no apps, just some good old-fashioned chat, encouragement and a giggle. Our members are already reporting weight loss of up to a stone, and that's since September.

8 Market Place Aylsham NR11 6EH 01263 738444 county@arnoldskeys.com

We meet every Thursday morning at St. Benet's Hall, North Walsham, (that's the hall behind the church) from 9.30am until 11.00am. My name is Mel and I 'run' the group. If you want to get in touch with me to ask anything, please email me at melisfizzy@hotmail.co.uk and I will try to answer any questions that you have.

Meadow Makeover by Hospital Friends Hospital supporters have turned land workers to give a wildflower meadow a winter makeover.

The area in front of North Walsham War Memorial Hospital has been mown, and is now being raked, by members of its Friends group. Next they plan to tidy up pathways where wooden edgings and anti-weed mat have rotted.

The meadow was created by the Friends, with help from local businessman Carl Bird in memory of his mum Madge, in 2012 on the site of the former hospital when it was replaced by the current building.

Hospital Friends chairman Keith Jarvis said: “Ten years on, the meadow is in need of a bit of tender loving care, so we have given it a good haircut and rake through to help the flowers come back stronger next year. “We will also remove crumbling edges and torn matting which have become a trip hazard.

“There are not many of us, so we are trying to enlist help from other organisations who might be able to join work parties in the coming weeks.”

Anyone willing to help should contact Keith at k.jarvis155@btinternet.com.

Other Friends news: The Friends are also planning to provide festive gifts for the two dozen patients spending Christmas on the wards. As last year, due to Covid restrictions, they cannot attend to hand them out, which will be done by staff. But they will be putting up trimmed Christmas trees outside the front door and on the rear patio and providing hampers for staff. They have also provided a range of “extras” for the hospital, using funds donated by the public, ranging from compost bins for volunteer gardeners and shaving mirrors for patients to plastic boxes for staff “scrubs”.

Ready for action!

The Reef to opens its doors to the public

The Reef Leisure Centre opened its doors on Tuesday 30 November, with award-winning leisure operator Everyone Active ready to welcome the public to use the pool, gym, and studios for the first time.

and a dedicated pool-side wheelchair for disabled users to transfer to, which is compatible with the Poolpod.

The facility, which has been built to be accessible to all, has something for everyone to enjoy. The six-lane, 25m main pool is built to Sport England’s high standards and will support a range of aquatic activities from competitive swimming events to inflatable play sessions for children. A moving floor on the 13m learner pool will allow the water depth to be changed for different activities and user groups such as swimming lessons, water confidence and toddler sessions and aqua fit exercise classes.

The pool will be accessible via shallow steps with an assisting handrail and a Poolpod for pool users who require a wheelchair. The Poolpod will be supported by a wheelchair storage zone near the Changing Places facility

Alongside the use of conventional heating methods, water at The Reef will be heated through solar thermal energy, meaning energy from the sun will directly heat the water and reduce the reliance on gas. There are Electric Vehicle Charge Points available for electric cars to charge.

For gym-users, the upper floor offers a variety of activities. The Reef has a 60-station health and fitness suite, including a range of exercise machines and free weights. The dance and activities studio, which covers an impressive 200sqm, offers opportunity for group exercise classes and studio sessions. Cllr. Virginia Gay, portfolio holder for Leisure, Culture and Wellbeing said: “Not so very long ago, in the summer of 2019, North Norfolk District Council made the decision to carry on with the construction of a new leisure centre for our District.

We wanted to make something truly special, the likes of which North Norfolk has never had before, and now here we are, about to open, about to welcome our first visitors to The Reef.

The Reef is the largest leisure offering in North Norfolk and represents an investment of £11m from North Norfolk District Council, alongside a grant of £1m from Sports England and the Lottery Fund.

The flagship project will improve the health and wellbeing of residents in North Norfolk for years to come, providing services and support which may not be readily available in the district.

Visiting Coaches are Thomas Lish 3rd Dan, Commonwealth Youth Champion, British Championships u21 Silver Medallist and GB Squad member, and his brother Paddy Lish, 2nd Dan, British Schools Champions and Dutch International Champion.

Since opening we have already secured our first National Medal, Sensei Tom secured the Gold at the British Judo Council National Championships last weekend and our ambition is to take a competition squad of our new members to compete within 2 years of opening our doors!

Judo is an excellent activity for young kids because it builds healthy and strong muscles early on, improves their cardio, and lowers their cholesterol. It is also a sport that builds discipline, focus and resilience.

We train on Thursday nights from 5.30pm (details on our Facebook page), and due to the popularity of our kid’s sessions are actively recruiting adult beginners or returners to come and join us!

North Norfolk Judo is a community (not for Profit) club, and we are also looking for local sponsorship towards mats and to make competition and participation accessible for all – if local businesses are interested in supporting us then please do get in touch! northnorfolkjudo@gmail.com or visit our website www.northnorfolkjudo.com

So, what are you waiting for? Come along and give it a throw!

The Vikings’ outstanding form has continued with four wins from four in the last month including successes over fellow top five sides Sevenoaks (29 – 27 away) and Wimbledon (22 – 19 home), the other matches being big wins over Sutton and Tunbridge Wells. After 11 games of the 26-match season, they were second in London & South East Premier with 44 points, six behind leaders Dorking whom they were due to play in Surrey last Saturday. It has been a remarkable journey so far for the Vikings considering this is their first season since promotion.

The Raiders remain unbeaten in their League, most recently victory beating their Wymondham counterparts 47 -5. Their only defeat was in a friendly to Holt 1st XV; Holt top the League above them.

The School’s Programme has grown with 12 High Schools participating, 50% more than 2019 -20. Including Primaries, whose programme starts next term, around 2,000 students were involved two years ago, making it

Meanwhile the Youth & Minis season is in full swing. Recent events include a seven team Under 13s Festival at Scottow Park and the Valkyries sides visiting Shelford for an Eastern Counties Festival.

Faster Than Blinking

North Norfolk Vikings are demonstrating to all how their swimmers are progressing especially in their junior squads. Evidence could be seen at an open competition staged at the UEA, promoted by the Diss Otters Club where swimmers attended from all over the Eastern Region.

In the under 13 years 50m freestyle the time margins were faster than blinking when Viking trio Rebecca Burrows, Emily Beighton and Emily Morton seemed to touch the pad together, but the electronic timing separated, them all with Rebecca on 36.05 finishing in sixteenth place with Beighton on 36.83 just 0.05 ahead of Morton finishing eighteenth and nineteenth respectively.

Intermediates William Coop, and Masie Fagan both from North Walsham, demonstrated their appetite for the sport in their respective age groups as both swimmers did three L -R Emily Morton, Emily Beighton & Rebecca Burrows events. William admitted that his best race was his 50m freestyle and it was epitomised in his technique when he went over the distance in 33.80 finishing fifth. Masie, meanwhile, made no mistakes when the North Walsham High School student completed the 200m freestyle as one of the braver Vikings coming tenth in 3:03.41.

Rebecca Burrows stepped onto the blocks again and was simply excellent in her 200m freestyle; when on the last length, the 14-year-old, from Rackheath, demonstrated an almost perfect unilateral breathing technique to take her strongly to a seventh-place finish in 2:51.95. Vikings had forty-one personal bests and eight county qualifying times.
