As mentioned last time Duncan Baker came to see us on 6th January with his delightful daughters They were able to see the three timid cats, Frankie, Ella and Cassie who unfortunately hid up as they are not used to seeing so many new faces at once Although the cats in care were not happy to socialize, Ozzy, one of Caroline’s cats came out to see us Unfortunately, Caroline was not well enough to join as she had a nasty bug so Ray, her husband, who enjoys socialising the cats, stood in for her As none of us wanted to catch the bug it was not possible to offer refreshments to our guests We hope the girls were not too disappointed and that they will be able to come back another time when there are some cuddly kittens in care.
Charlie, the other cat in residence had originally tested positive to FELV His bloods had been forwarded to Glasgow for additional testing and much to our relief had recently been advised by our vets that these tests had given a negative result This means that we can now take another cat in to the adjoining pen
During January we said farewell to Wallace and Narla who hardly had time to settle in her pen and have welcomed on board, Jacob, Juniper, Reggie, Jasmine, Socks, Jodie and Jemima Although it is lovely to see the cats leave for loving new homes it is just as well there are new faces to take their place

Once again Barbara and her lovely team have been to Morrisons in Cromer and raised £132.36 for the cats. They will also be at Tesco in Sheringham on 2nd February
Last time, I forgot to mention our volunteers who deal with the other essential work that is undertaken, such as Irene who looks after the neutering line, Jan who issues the vouchers for people who take advantage of the neutering campaign, Bren who looks after the website
and our Facebook page and Sue who completes the “cat-a-log” records of all cats that come into care and are re-homed We also welcome new volunteer Gill who is taking over some of my duties.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher) This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries The number also applies for those wishing to the advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have
any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858 Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home

On top of the heartbreak and worry that a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness can cause, there will be a raft of concerns and uncertainties about your care and financial affairs, and it can be difficult to know exactly how to prepare from a legal standpoint
There are steps you can take to ensure that your care runs smoothly following such a diagnosis
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for Health and Welfare can be an essential part of future care planning, alongside the preparation of an Advance Care Plan
Considerations for an LPA for Health and Welfare
An LPA for Health and Welfare allows you to appoint a number of individuals to act as your ‘attorneys’ with respect to your health and care decisions Your attorneys must be over 18 years of age and have mental capacity
You must select your attorneys carefully, having due consideration as to whether such individual(s) would be appropriate attorney(s) and whether they have suitable character/ experience to make difficult decisions on your behalf
Your attorneys will have the power to make
decisions on your behalf in relation to your health and care, including but not limited to; your daily routine (diet etc), medical care, moving into a care home and also decisions surrounding life sustaining treatment (with the latter being subject to express authorisation being provided within the LPA itself)
It is important to note that your attorneys can only deal with your health and care decisions when you become incapable of making such decisions yourself
You may also wish to prepare an LPA for Property and Financial Affairs This will deal with decisions surrounding your banking, selling your home and paying any bills and outgoings during your lifetime.
In addition to an LPA, an Advance Care Plan (ACP) allows you to clearly set out your personal wishes regarding the care and treatment you should receive It is not a legally binding document; however, it ensures that the people involved in your care know what is important to you
ACPs are normally made together with your healthcare team. Some people feel they need help from their nurse or doctor to fill in an
ACP, but you can complete one yourself An example of an Advance Care Plan template can be found on the Dementia UK website.
Once completed, you should keep a copy amongst your papers and also give a copy to anyone else involved in your care If you have prepared an LPA for Health and Welfare, then you should make a note of this within your ACP
It is also important that you consider the terms of your existing will (if held) to ensure that no changes are required If you do not have an existing will, then it is advisable that you consider preparing one
If you would like legal advice following the diagnosis of a progressive illness, please call 01263 825959 and ask to speak to Kieran Athow or email Kieran athow@hayes-storr com

Gunton's Water-powered Sawmill is one of the top attractions in North Norfolk The focus of the sawmill is to preserve and demonstrate aspects of England's industrial heritage. We run the 200-year-old saw on open days and for private groups making it popular with tourists and locals alike

North Walsham People’s Theatre became the focus of Christmas time for North Walsham as it’s pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, entertained and enchanted audiences with sell-out shows
North Walsham People’s Theatre is a pop-up theatre located on Black Swan Loke and the Christmas pantomime is the jewel in the crown after a fantastic response from audiences The new adaptation was written by director Joseph Ballard, who managed to incorporate all the big news stories of last year alongside slapstick routines, his trademark sense of humour and a meaningful message to inspire audience members of all ages in this outstanding production
Joseph Ballard said: “I am very proud of what we have achieved, employing professional actors to present a top quality pantomime for people in the town to enjoy – sharing the magic of live theatre and the sense of togetherness at Christmastime We had received fantastic feedback and support, which has provided us with a strong foundation to go forward with more plans throughout the year ”
In this version, Rose, played by Georgie Matthews, unaware of being princess, couldn’t think of anything worse than actually being one –all whilst the new (yes, another one) villainous Prime Minister, played mesmerizingly by Simon Michael-Morgan) plotted against the royal family to take over as President Beverley Bishop and Jamie O’Sullivan bring comedy and remind us of the rules of the kingdom as the Queen and Duke respectively Local dance school Dance for Fun provided the ensemble with dazzling numbers and costumes Andrew Burrell’s talent as the hilarious Percy kept the pace alongside the kingdom’s fairy (or auntie), played by Norfolk’s very own Queen of the stage, Titania Trust
From outlandish costumes, quick humour and showstopping moments (including a star-lit ballet and dare we mention the flying?) Titania wowed audiences, showing that over two decades of pantomime and stage experience shone through under her fairy wings Titania proved to be a pantomime dame, with homage to tradition, for the modern age, ensuring her message of kindness and love carried through to win the day
The pantomime was supported by the HAZ Project, helping to promote the
town – recognising that arts and culture plays a significant part in capturing the town’s past and also sharing its way forward with the community The show was produced by New Stages, who present shows and classes all year round including North Norfolk Youth Theatre for 8-17s, acting classes for adults and North Walsham People’s Choir
You can find out more about upcoming projects, shows and classes at: www.newstages.co.uk

In the comfort of The Kings Arms Hotel in North Walsham, the very place the inaugural meeting of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust of 1811 was held, the belated 2022 Annual General Meeting of the NWDCT took place on 12th January 2023 Forty-eight members attended the upstairs lounge (formerly the courthouse) and were updated on progress of the canal so far and plans for the year ahead
New members were welcomed, and trustees and officers were elected or re-elected to the Trust The treasurer, Barry Mobbs, reported that the Trust’s finances were in good health. Donations and funds raised over the year were uplifting considering the general squeeze on the public’s purse
A new trustee, Ralph Miles, was welcomed Ralph will be joining David Batley, another relatively new member, together forming the funding team David has already secured a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund through the Norfolk Community Foundation and this money has bought new equipment for the enthusiastic work party Part of the volunteers’ tasks is to manage the vegetation along the canal side, now with modern battery driven equipment eliminating both exhaust and noise pollution
David and Ralph will be looking for funding
this year, both in the county and nationally, for the canal restoration enabling the Trust to engage a civil engineering firm and expertise from the Inland Waterways Association and the Canal and River Trust
must work alongside various government bodies to ensure correct procedures are in place to enable the restoration and re-watering of the canal Katherine is a most welcome part of the team and has already begun to discover the delicate diversity of the water and the canal side
Trustees and officers of the NWDCT meet monthly The enthusiasm for re-watering and restoring the canal navigation does not diminish and the team are dedicated to opening the canal The hope is for it to be used by canoeists, paddle boarders and swimmers beyond Ebridge basin, only eco-friendly craft also part of the plan
A new volunteer officer joining the NWDCT is Katherine Benstead Katherine’s passion and expertise is wildlife. A crucial part of re-watering the Canal is the observation and care given to the creatures and plants that inhabit the banks and water The NWDCT
To put the canal firmly on the map, the annual Open Day will now be a slightly larger affair at the new venue of Dilham Hall Retreats at the Tonnage Bridge location on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd September 2023 Any current members or those keen to join, would be welcomed into a team to make this weekend one to remember The aim is for the general public to see the lovely canal and maybe take a trip on our solar powered boat, Ella II or the new electric powered Wherry, The Newun We hope there will be live music and stalls selling food and goods plus local crafts people displaying their expertise
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal, please email: secretary@nwdct.org or call David on: 07497 081137
Players have just been awarded two nominations from the National Opera and Dramatic Association (NODA).
Both are nominations for the outstanding play Goodnight Mister Tom that they put on at the Coronation Hall last October. The show has been nominated for the Eastern Region Certificate for drama Plus, an unusual nomination for Imaginative set for small stage
“I feel totally overwhelmed with the nomination, but hard work pays off”, said director Cheryl Collings
She pointed out that it was due to her cast and crew, who stepped up and made this play a success “There are a lot of people who don't know the amount of time and energy it takes to pull a show together and the time spent on it outside of normal rehearsal times ”
The scenery grabbed its own nomination Designed and built by the husband-and-wife team of Nigel and Brenda Holmes, it gradually transformed the stage
from a cottage in the country to a dark house in London, passing through the village library, the post office and village hall Train stations and bomb shelters were also brought to life on what is a very small stage.
“Thankfully,” said Nigel “we were working with an imaginative director who let us use our creative talents to the full She did not restrict us to standard thinking This scenery nomination proves that she was right to let us run with it ”
The same production team are currently working on the pantomime Aladdin, to be staged in the Coronation Hall between the 14th and 18th February A glittery, family friendly show, with music, dance and laughter Not only are the production crew the same but many of the actors as well. A brilliant introduction for kids to see their first live show
Tickets to the panto cost just £12 for adults and £8 for under 16s They are available online from www ticketsource co uk/mundesleyplayers or by phone at 0333 666 3366, or they can be purchased in person from The Coronation Hall between 2 30pm and 4 30pm every Sunday

It’s Valentine’s Day and what could be more of a treat for your amore than an indulgent chocolate pudding to round off a special meal?
As you know, I try to keep recipes simple, and this one is no exception There is a little magic involved but the pudding does all that in the oven, producing a light sponge on top with a delicious, silky sauce on the bottom Excellent served with cream, crème fraise or a delicate crème anglaise (custard to you and me) Add a few of your favourite berries on the plate for a special touch
This pudding is quite rich, so will easily serve 6. Any leftovers can be covered and put in the fridge to be reheated in the microwave
Ingredients
130g plain flour
25g cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
pinch of salt
100g soft brown sugar
60g butter, melted (+ extra for greasing)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
I do hope that no one challenges me on this (!) but in an emergency, having completely forgotten to produce a pudding one Sunday, I decided to try something I have always meant to do but never got around to; a microwaved steam pudding I have seen it done many times (thank you for the inspiration, Joselyn!) but never quite plucked up the courage, but these were desperate times So with trepidation I whisked up what I hoped would be a delicious, light airy sponge, grabbed the marmalade and
125ml whole milk
For the sauce
25g cocoa powder
100g soft brown sugar
250ml boiling water
Method
Preheat your oven to Gas 4, 180C / 160C fan Grease an (approximately) 8 inch pie dish or baking dish with butter.
In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt Whisk together to combine.
In a separate medium mixing bowl, beat together the melted butter and sugar until smooth Add the egg and vanilla and beat well, scraping down the sides of the bowl to make sure everything is well combined and smooth Add ⅓ of the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Stir through gently until just combined. Now add half of the milk, mix gently again. Continue like this until all the flour and milk is combined just It is important not to overmix or the cake may turn out dense and tough Pour the pudding batter into your prepared dish
For the sauce: Mix together the cocoa, sugar
went for it what a wonderful invention the microwave is! Not only does it produce the lightest sponge I’ve ever had, but it is also a super economical way to cook, something we all need at the moment, and the speed it does it!
This recipe feeds around 4 to 5 if you add lashings of custard (microwave again, obviously) and I’m so blown away by the ease and speed that my family’s waistlines will be increasing over the next few weeks and months as I experiment with different flavours I guess that’s the end of the New Year Diet!
4 oz self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
3 oz caster sugar
3 oz butter/marge (I use Clover)
1 large egg
1 tablespoon milk
1 dessert spoon orange blossom water (optional, use orange essence if you prefer)
2 tablespoons orange marmalade
Laundry Loke, North Walsham NR28 0BD
and boiling water in a small bowl until well combined (it will look watery but don’t worry) Slowly pour the sauce over the back of a spoon all over the top of the pudding mixture in the dish
Bake the pudding for 25-30 minutes. The top should look dry and be a little springy Lift carefully out of the oven (the sponge will be floating on the sauce) and serve
Put everything except the marmalade into a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy Grease a 2lb pudding basin generously, add a circle of greaseproof paper into the bottom and grease this also
Spoon your marmalade into the bottom of the basin, and spoon your pudding mix on top, evening out the top
Put into the microwave on high for 5 mins, check and if it’s still a little loose in the middle return for another minute
Carefully remove from microwave and run a knife all around the outside edge of the pudding, and using a cloth carefully upend the pudding onto a plate, lifting off the bowl
Remove the greaseproof paper, being very careful as the marmalade will be extremely hot, and voila! It’s ready to serve with custard, ice cream or cream.
Experiment with golden syrup, lemon curd or jam in place of marmalade

Cromer ’s acoustic singer-song writing duo, The Browns, are releasing their debut single, ‘Forgive and Forget’ on 24th February this year
The couple first met in 1977 at a school dance, but lost touch after their first date plans went awry, but they reconnected in 2015, married in 2017 and started writing and singing together the following year
Their distinctive sound developed organically as Annie started adding harmonies to Vernon’s vocals, and it’s their harmonies and blend of voices that makes their performances distinctive and unique
Their single certainly won’t disappoint their followers as layers of harmony proliferate throughout the song with its poignant theme of suspicion and betrayal in a fragile relationship that is seemingly doomed Sorrow, indignation, and resignation weave their way through the song much like the intertwining vocals and harmonies The theme of helplessness and hopelessness are treated with elegance and sensitivity and the beautiful blend of harmonies only serves to highlight the disharmony in
PROVIDING
The Browns have been regular performers at festivals and folk groups around Norfolk such as Deepdale Festival in Burnham Deepdale, Folk on the Pier in Cromer, Cambridge Folk Club, the Bury Folk Collective, Blakeney Beer and Shanty Festival and at various venues around Norwich They also played at festivals further afield such as Bedford River Festival and Boar ’s Bridge festival
Their songs are already getting significant radio play, but their decision to record an album and release a single is entirely due to the encouragement and support they received from their fans, friends and the audiences they encountered at gigs and performances
An album is planned for the spring, and The Browns will perform some of their album tracks at their upcoming gig for Folk on the Strand in March at the Belfry in
Overstrand, where they will be supporting Sally Barker on the first evening of a weekend devoted to showcasing singer-songwriters
In the meantime, you can hear them at folk clubs, venues and events around Norfolk and beyond – follow them on Facebook or check their website for their events diary!
You can follow The Browns on Facebook www.facebook.com/vernonandannie and find out more about them via their website at www.thebrownsnorfolk.com

At Toll Barn Vets we believe in constantly providing the highest standard of care for our patients by utilising cutting edge technology to reduce reliance on medication
This is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life
As part of this commitment we offer our patients Laser Therapy which reduces inflammation and provides pain relief It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring application of needles
Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with most sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions
Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease
We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform
Pickle has come into the rescue for a 6-week holiday, he was found 3 years ago out during the day it was discovered that he was blind, so his finders have been caring for him since then I have put him on a strict diet as he is rather overweight, an overweight hog cannot curl up into a tight ball and makes them vulnerable to predators and frost if they are hibernating, luckily Pickle does not have to worry about that, but it’s better for his wellbeing if he loses a bit of weight while he’s on his

Children’s literacy charity Schoolreaders is urgently looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can help spread the joy of reading to children in local primary schools – especially around the towns of Holt, Sheringham,
Cromer and North Walsham in Norfolk.
The much-needed charity recruits volunteers to listen to children read weekly in primary schools, focusing on schools with the greatest need
Every year 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read well which can have life-long consequences1
Furthermore, government statistics show it is the youngest and most disadvantaged children who have been set back the most in reading following the disruption to education caused by the Covid pandemic.
Schoolreaders volunteers act as positive role models, not only helping children improve their reading age but also their reading fluency, enjoyment and comprehension3
Antonia, retired, and a Schoolreaders volunteer, explains her experience, “Being a Schoolreaders volunteer has exceeded my expectations and is one of the best parts of my
week. I can see the difference the reading makes to the children particularly in their punctuation Being able to read is the greatest gift you can give a child They can go on to cook, build a rocket or run the country ”
Jane Whitbread, who founded Schoolreaders ten years ago and which now provides over 12,000 children with a weekly one-to-one reading session, concludes, “Schoolreaders are needed more than ever, especially for the youngest and most disadvantaged pupils to help them catch up on their reading Children who leave primary school unable to read well will have trouble accessing their secondary education fully which can have life-long consequences The beauty of our reading scheme is that not only does it benefit children and schools, but it also gives our volunteers a huge sense of satisfaction in sharing their love of reading ”

HAZ project’s quick intervention avoids potential disaster situation.
The improvements taking place in North Walsham town centre (as part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone project) have unearthed what could have been a potential sinkhole The quick thinking by the team on the ground has meant that steps have been taken to avoid this potential disaster
During the extensive regeneration works currently happening in the town centre, the contractors discovered a small hole in the centre of the marketplace On further examination, the hole was found to have a larger void underneath This space has a mains water pipe running through it, which is badly corroded and in need of replacement. Within a few hours, our team had contacted Anglian Water and representatives came on site, inspected the space and have consequently arranged to deploy a team next week to replace the pipe and make good.
The works to the marketplace have indirectly contributed to fixing what could have been a potential disaster later on and the prompt action has allowed this issue to be sorted out and rectified without further disruption and cost to local residents
Cllr Richard Kershaw, Portfolio holder for Sustainable Growth, commented: “I am very relieved that our work has indirectly identified what could have been a major issue for the town We have been able to alert the relevant authority to the problem and get them on-site within a few hours to review the issue They have agreed to fund the replacement of the existing warped and

"There will, of course, be some disruption as they will need to close one of the main Lokes in the town, but we’re hopeful that this will only be for a few days next week ”
The team from the HAZ project, the Town Council, the contractors on site and Anglian Water will identify and signpost pedestrians
to and from the car park, and in particular access to the weekly market (which happens on a Thursday), whilst Bank Loke is out of action. It is hoped that this work will only impact one market day

When I moved to North Norfolk in 2013 I was interested in the needs of the many older people here, and volunteered at Glendon House (Overstrand) and Halsey House (Dementia Friendly Cromer)
I became a trustee at Age Concern North Norfolk in 2015 and then chair in 2016 I stepped down from the position at the end of October 2022 and completed a final “consultancy basis” period at the end of January 2023.
I continue to serve as a Governor of the NSFT (Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust)
Over the last 8 years funding bid processes have become more rigorous and, during 2019-2021 with the pandemic sandwiched in between those years, the charity had to ride out many storms
Over the years various trustees have given freely and faithfully of their time The current chair is my former colleague Mark Danson-Hatcher and I am confident that he will continue to guide the “ship” into smoother waters – not least because of his naval background! He is supported by four other trustees Anneliese Maerz (in post since February 2021) continues to successfully manage the Day Centre Hub’s activities
It gives me great pleasure to be handing over to a new chair at a high point where referrals have never been greater and staff have never
I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all staff members, trustees and other volunteers, who continue to make ACNN such a success. Contact ACNN on 01263 821188 or alisonc@ageconcernnorthnorfolk
Ground rent is a type of rent paid by the tenant of a leasehold property to the landlord or freeholder
It is a yearly fee that is paid in addition to the rent paid for the property itself Historically, ground rent has been a common feature of leasehold properties, with landlords charging tenants a fee for the right to use the land on which their property sits
However, in recent years, the practice of charging ground rent has come under scrutiny Many have criticized the practice as being unjust and exploitative, with tenants paying exorbitant fees for the right to live in their own homes. As a result, there have been calls for the abolition of ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties
The government has responded to these calls by introducing the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act, which effectively abolishes ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties, by capping all new leases to a maximum ground rent of £0 per year
The new law, which came into effect in June 2022, means that landlords will no longer be able to charge ground rent on new leases of leasehold properties While existing leaseholders will only benefit from this reform if they choose to extend their lease, otherwise they will be obliged to pay ground rent until the agreed review date
From the tenant's perspective, the abolition of ground rent is a positive development The reform will help to reduce the financial burden on those who are struggling to afford housing and will help to make housing more affordable and accessible for new tenants
From the landlord's perspective, the abolition of ground rent may have negative consequences. Ground rent is a source of income for landlords and freeholders, and its abolition could impact their ability to maintain and improve the properties they own Some landlords argue that ground rent is a necessary part of the leasehold system, as it ensures that tenants have a vested interest in the property and are more likely to take care of it Few reports suggest that landlords and freeholders may look to compensate for the loss of ground rent by raising the price of their property
The new law will also cap ground rent to a maximum of £0 per year on all retirement properties and this change is expected to come into force no earlier than April 2023
In conclusion, the abolition of ground rent on all new leases of leasehold properties is a complex issue with both positive and negative consequences On the one hand, it will help to make housing more affordable and accessible for tenants, as well as reduce the financial burden on those who are struggling to afford
housing. While on the other hand, it may have negative consequences for landlords and freeholders, and could lead to an increase in property prices
It is essential that freeholders and leaseholders understand the implications of the reform and seek advice accordingly

Visitors to the North Norfolk Railway between 27 May and 4 June this year will have the opportunity to travel on special trains hauled by steam locomotive No 60163 Tornado Tornado, the first mainline steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960, made headlines as it steamed for the first time in 2008 Since then, the engine has continued to impress, hauling Royal Trains and appearing on the big screen in Paddington 2 as well as on numerous television programmes including BBC Top Gear ’s famous “Race to The North”.
Tornado is also the fastest steam engine to run since the 1960s, reaching 100mph on a test train in 2017 but will be running at a more sedate 25 miles hour through the beautiful North Norfolk countryside The engine spends most of its time hauling premier excursions on the mainline, and this is one of the locomotive’s first appearances for fifteen months, so tickets are expected to sell fast.
Special trains hauled by Tornado will depart from Sheringham Station at 10 00, 11 40, 13 20, 15 00 and 16 40 each day from 27 May to 4 June – advance booking via www nnrailway co uk is essential Tickets will include a reserved seat for one return journey from Sheringham to Holt, with extra time at Holt station for passengers to take photographs of the express engine.

February
February came this morning; Winter ’s dog let off its lead, Bounding like a beast of the wild, Grateful to be freed It snapped at my fingers, Jumped on my toes; Darting around me, Pulling my clothes Suddenly the sun appeared, And called the dog to heel, The warmth of its smile Upon my face, Was so very good to feel

The Arts Society Glaven Valley meets for lectures on arts and related subjects, once a month on the third Tuesday from September to June We meet at Cley Village Hall
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 21 February at 1 45 for 2 15 at the Village Hall in Cley
Come along and hear expert Pamela Campbell-Johnson talking about the photographer Jorge Lewinski Born in Lwow, Poland (now Ukraine) in 1921, he has an unparalleled reputation for portraits of the iconic British painters and sculptors of the 20th century. Lewinski photographed over 300 leading British artists principally between 1962 and 1995, revealing the character of each sitter as both a person and as an artist Among others, he captured through his lens David Hockney, Henry Moore, Anthony Gormley and Barbra Hepworth Through Lewinski’s work, we will explore the artistic contributions that these painters and sculptors made to the British Art scene
In addition to its expert monthly lectures, TASGV organises a programme of Study Days, Visits and social occasions It also supports a Young Arts Group and other volunteering activities such as producing Trails of Discovery for local historic churches and venues, aimed at young people
Membership of TASGV costs £45 a year. You can come as a guest for £5 to see if you enjoy our meeting. There is free parking in the car park next to the Village Hall New members are welcomed and you can find out how to join on our website www theartssocietyglavenvalley org uk
North Norfolk Viking’s Lead Swimming Coach Sam Watts smashed the Eastern Region 800m freestyle record at the Crawley Competition with a winning time of 10 46 78 for his age category The record stood for eleven years at 11 48 45
Ironically although he swam in adjacent lanes to other swimmers, he was the only swimmer in this category, so Sam decided to swim against the clock Sam's swim was the fourth fastest over all out of a field of 27 competitors from all the different categories combined
"When I saw the previous record, I knew I could have a good go at breaking it when I entered After the swim I realised that I had broken
the 800m long course record by 1 minute, 2 seconds " explained Sam when he proudly displayed his gold medal
The Vikings have an active masters section and squads for all abilities If you would like to arrange a free try out, just e-mail them at: info@norfolkvikings.co.uk
Mundesley Golf Course is one of North Norfolk’s hidden gems as noted by a visitor recently!
“Extremely well maintained and friendly course. Tight fairways and trees make this a precise test of golf The course is a credit to the staff and the greens are super Food after the round was also excellent A hidden gem”
The 9 hole course, extended to 18 holes with different tee positions was designed in 1901 with legendary six times Open Champion, Harry Vardon With panoramic views of the coastline and the surrounding countryside it offers a challenge to golfers of all abilities
Whether a junior just starting out, a golfer seeking new challenges or looking to make new friends over a round of golf, Mundesley is the club to join The club has a number of packages including 9 Hole, 5-day and 7-day membership We have a driving range at the entrance to the course where you can hone your skills and take advantage of the lessons provided by our Head Professional
Given the current cost of living situation we have kept our membership increase to a minimum and do not charge a joining fee. We’ve also introduced a 3-month trial membership at £130 which includes a free lesson
On the social side we have an excellent bar and restaurant with a dining area overlooking the course for those special occasions
For more information contact the club on 01263 720095 or visit www.mundesleygolfclub.com for a drone’s eye view of the course.
At North Walsham Community Centre every Tuesday 10.30am -11.30am there is a rhythmic exercise class. Using equipment, such as hoops, clubs, balls or scarves, and more, each class is unique and is planned to challenge your body with stretching, swinging and flowing movements, improving co-ordination, balance and fitness.
Please come along if this appeals to you, or call teacher, Rosemary Barker, on 07880 967042 for further details.
