News on the Future of The Cedars
The Council is pleased to confirm the historic Cedars building in North Walsham is being refurbished by the District Council, aided by a grant from Historic England, to provide a flexible space for businesses or community organisations looking for a well-situated base in the town.
Formerly the offices of North Walsham Town Council, The Cedars enjoys a prominent location in the centre of the market town - which is currently being rejuvenated by the £3.2million High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) scheme, led by North Norfolk District Council and supported financially with grant funding by Historic England and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership. News on the Future of The Cedars
Continued from front cover... As well as letting out the main building, the Council is discussing proposals to sell adjoining land to maximise financial return on this valuable asset for the benefit of North Norfolk residents.
The Council had previously been in talks dating back to the summer of 2014 with national pub and restaurant chain JD Wetherspoon, who had signalled an interest in acquiring The Cedars to turn it into a new pub.
However due to the emergence of Covid in early 2020, Wetherspoon’s interest in potentially opening new licensed premises on the site was understandably delayed due to the impact of the pandemic on the pub trade.
With JD Wetherspoon having been unable to commit to purchasing the site, the Council has decided to press ahead with proposals to restore
and refurbish the building itself and then invite other businesses or community groups to express their interest in renting space at the premises.
Deputy Leader of the Council and North Walsham Councillor Eric Seward said: “The proposal for the Cedar House/ New Rd site to be sold to JD Wetherspoon has been going on for nearly seven years. The District Council under different political administrations has twice agreed to sell the site to them. However, the Covid pandemic has understandably delayed any chance of a pub being opened on this site for some years. The Council therefore has to find alternative ways for this derelict prominent town centre site to be brought back into use.” Councillor Richard Kershaw, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Growth, added: “The Council
(with its partners) is creating a once in a generation opportunity to enhance North Walsham’s historic core and make it an attractive destination and centre of commerce. With the award of grants for the HAZ scheme and the help from Historic England, this historic building can become a key part of that programme of activity. Bringing The Cedars back into use, after it laying empty for so long, will breathe new life into this gateway to the historic market place; what’s more, the investment in the fabric of the town centre will help indigenous businesses to invest and to flourish – including those in the local hospitality sector. It will be good to see life back in the building and the uncertainty about its future resolved.”
If you are interested in possibly letting the space available and would like to find out more, contact our Estates team on 01263 516025 or Estates@north-norfolk.gov.uk
More Investment in North Walsham's Amenities
You will know by now that North Walsham has two new county councillors - Councillor Lucy Shires for the division of North Walsham East and Councillor Saul Penfold for the West. But your district councillors have not changed at all and in this latest report we would like to tell you about some further investment in our local amenities.
More money is to be spent on improvements to parks, allotments, play facilities and open green spaces in North Walsham. This money comes from financial contributions that developers of major housing schemes in the town make when they receive planning permission from North Norfolk District Council. These contributions are commonly known as Section 106 payments and are designed to help compensate for the increased demands that new housing puts on the town’s amenities. In recent months the District Council has awarded over £46,000 pounds to North Walsham Town Council for improvements to allotments and for refurbishment works in the Memorial Park. In addition, £22,000 has been awarded to North Walsham Play to help bring about their planned new and inclusive Skate Park at Trackside park.
A further £60,000 remains to be spent on projects to improve parks and green spaces in the town. District Councillors will be working with the Town Council and other interested parties to identify projects for these funds. We are hoping that agreement on suitable projects will be secured in the next few months.
Lastly, we would like to thank the many people - at least 200 - who came along to the North Walsham Heritage Action Zone exhibitions in June, not to mention those who visited the HAZ stall at North Walsham's Funday. The exhibition has in addition been installed at Paston College.

A Note from the editor
United Norwich Kidney Patients Association (UNKPA)
After a false start with the weather, dare I say Summer is here?
We are a charity, established and registered as a charity in 1980, when Norwich had the only renal unit in this area of East Anglia. Membership now includes all renal patients from Norfolk and the Waveney District of Suffolk (not just those on dialysis), families and friends wherever they might live and monies raised through fundraising goes directly to support and help our local kidney patients.
Restrictions are easing and visitors are arriving in their droves, but we still need to exercise caution and stay safe. Having said that, it is vital for our local economy to provide a warm welcome to our visitors and help everyone to enjoy our wonderful town and all it has to offer.
I mentioned the RNLI’s message on Safety in the Water last issue, and we are running their advice again in this issue, please have a look and remind everyone to take care and know what to do if you find yourself or anyone else in trouble. Above all, enjoy the Summer, now it is here.
Some of the activities undertaken by UNKPA at the present time are to: • Support patients and their families where appropriate. • Assist in promoting self-help groups. • Raise funds and invite and receive contributions. • Produce a quarterly newsletter. • Represent the views of renal patients. • Organise excursions / Social Events. • Provide general equipment and comforts for patients, which are not supplied by NHS. • Liaise with Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Norfolk &Norwich Paul Welsh from UNKPA

The long-term effect of delays in surgery caused by Covid-19
A study published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia has found that, in 2020, hospitals in England and Wales carried out 1.5 million fewer surgical procedures in 2020 by comparison to average figures over the previous 4 years, a drop of more than a third.
The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in the postponement of planned, non-urgent surgery in April and again in December 2020 had a significant effect, but there was also a 13.4% reduction in the number of emergency surgical procedures.
Researchers are concerned at the long-term effects on patients whilst hospitals attempt to resolve the backlog in elective surgeries, which is likely to take several years even with significant additional investment by the government. The study commented "Delays in the diagnosis and the surgical management of cancer will undoubtedly lead to an increase in cancer-related mortality."
Although the NHS disputes the way in which the study interpreted the data
collected, it continues to encourage patients to access services when required, as normal.
It is likely that care for patients with serious conditions other than cancer, such as diseases affecting the heart, lungs and other organs, will also be affected. Researchers also believe that patients' mental health is likely to deteriorate whilst they remain on waiting lists.
Delays in diagnosis and treatment could lead to an increase in claims against GP surgeries, hospitals and other healthcare providers. In addition, as clinical staff work harder to clear the backlogs, pressure and the potential for mistakes in care will also increase.
Clinical negligence claims are frequently complex, and it is important that anyone considering such a claim seeks advice at the earliest opportunity.

Police Have Launched Summer Initiative to Protect Norfolk's Wildlife Habitats
Visitors to Norfolk's coast this summer are being encouraged to act responsibly around wildlife. Norfolk Constabulary has signed up to the national initiative Operation Seabird to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving our rich wildlife habitats and tackling disturbance to seals, sea birds and nesting birds.
Officers will be out and about meeting visitors in specific locations across the county – including the beach on the Holkham estate, the Holme Dunes, Snettisham Beach to Heacham south beach, Winterton and Horsey beaches and Blakeney Point – between the beginning of June and the end of August. PC Chris Shelley, Norfolk Constabulary's Rural Crime Officer, said: "We always work closely with conservation charities, local councils and other key partners right along Norfolk's coastline to identify areas of concern.
"We're proud to be taking part in Operation Seabird this year and our focus will be on protecting our vulnerable ground nesting sea birds, the Little Terms and Ringer Plover, ensuring the seals on our beaches are not disturbed and educating and encouraging visitors to be responsible and consider how their actions may affect our wildlife. "We all have a duty to act responsibly and take extra care when we're out and about. While the focus of Operation Seabird is to engage, explain and educate visitors, we will act against anybody who wilfully and intentionally damages and disrupts our wildlife and their habitats.”
TS CARPE
VINYL
KARND
Previous incidents along our coastline have included dogs off leads disturbing nesting birds or seals, wild campers lighting fires on the beach dunes and causing significant damage to the fauna, quad bikes or 4x4 vehicles riding over nesting areas and canoeists getting too close to seals
RSPCA Insp Becky Harper said: "This year we are expecting an upsurge in people, who would normally go abroad for holidays, doing UK based staycations. "It should be remembered that our beautiful beach & coastal areas, which are fun for us to play in, are natural habitats and breeding grounds for many native and migratory animals, including several species on the endangered list. We humans share this space, and we can easily and unwittingly cause disturbance, fear and distress. "For many tourists it can be surprising and exciting to see marine mammals, including seals & their pups which will normally rest on the beach at various times of year, as well as ground nesting birds which are usually resident between March to September. As tempting as it is to approach them, we
would respectfully ask that all people are careful to: maintain a good distance; don't try to get close enough to touch or take selfies; read signs, stick to paths and keep dogs on leads where instructed to do so; and keep dogs under control at all times." Anyone who witnesses the deliberate and intentional disturbance of wildlife and their habitats is encouraged to contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting Operation Seabird. Operation Seabird was launched in 2020 by North Yorkshire and Humberside Police along with the RSPCA and is supported by local authorities, RNLI and wildlife trusts.

Oddfellows Raise Money for Local Charities
The Oddfellows is a friendly society whose main aim is to help people improve the quality of their lives through friendship, care and charitable support. They also provide a range of member benefits and, restrictions allowing, arrange social meetings and events. The Trafalgar Branch of the Oddfellows in North Walsham annually selects local charities to donate to and this year the Priscilla Bacon Hospital and the United Norwich Kidney Patients Association (UNKPA) were two of these charities.
Tina Hicks, Development Officer at the Trafalgar Lodge met with representatives of these charities in June to hand over the cheques, Hugo Stevenson Head of Fundraising and Communications for the Pricilla Bacon Hospice and Paul Welsh, Committee member of UNKPA.
The Priscilla Bacon Hospice will replace the current Priscilla Bacon Lodge which was established some 40 years ago. Unfortunately
the existing Lodge no longer meets the needs of the ever increasing population of Norfolk and expansion is not possible on the current site. Hence the need for a larger hospice which will provide more people in Norfolk with the quality end-of-life care they need. 24/7 air ambulance flying started 30 June, becoming first in East of England
Wednesday 30 June was a landmark moment for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and the provision of emergency critical care in the region, as the charity starts flying 24/7 for the very first time.
The gap between 1:30 am and 7am where there has been no helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) coverage in the region will now be closed, as EAAA becomes the first air ambulance in the East of England to fly 24 hours a day.
By flying 24/7 from 30 June, EAAA will now be able to provide the same level of service by helicopter or by car 24 hours a day to patients in need like Chris Marshall, who was saved by the charity last year.
Trek 24 events To further support EAAA’s 24/7 operation, three 24-mile or 24-kilometre fundraising treks will be taking place around the region this summer.
Join Trek 24 Suffolk Coast and Country on Saturday 14 August, Trek 24 The Chilterns Challenge on Saturday 4 September or Trek 24 Norfolk Coast Path on Sunday 12 September to help fund EAAA’s 24/7 service. For more information, go to: www.trek-24.co.uk
Sheringham cyclist owes life to East Anglian Air Ambulance after collision and takes on 435-mile cycle challenge
Chris Marshall, aged 49, is a barber from Sheringham and father of two. In May last year Chris was involved in a life-threatening collision with a car near Cromer Golf Club, while he was out training for a 100-mile cycle challenge. When Chris’s wife was first notified about the accident, she was told Chris wasn’t likely to survive.
Chris had a suspected head injury and had broken several bones in his body. His injuries were classed as lifethreatening and without the enhanced interventions of the air ambulance team, he would not have made it to hospital.
Becoming a 24/7 service for East Anglia has been a long-term ambition of the charity, with the initial research for expanding to a 24/7 operation taking place four years ago. Since then, EAAA has taken gradual steps towards achieving this ambition, which importantly included raising an extra million pounds a year to fund the additional operating hours, increasing its car cover to 24/7, building a new operational base and now 24/7 flying.
Fortunately, the team were able to stabilise Chris enough to be moved and he was flown to the major trauma centre at Addenbrooke’s for specialist treatment. Chris’ injuries were extensive and included three bleeds on the brain, several spinal fractures, including some damage to his spinal cord, a fractured pelvis, broken left shoulder blade, Chris Marshall hip and ankle and several broken ribs on his right side. EAAA has two critical care teams, Anglia One and Credit: Chris Taylor He has since suffered double vision, slurred speech and Anglia Two, which operate from Norwich and Cambridge had to learn to walk and talk again. respectively to take the A and E department to the patient, by air or by car, wherever they may be in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk or Despite these severe injuries, Chris has shown true grit and determination Norfolk. The highly skilled doctor and critical care to recover, and this August is planning to cycle 435 miles, known as the paramedics have been operating 24/7 by rapid response vehicle since Adrian Flux Lap of Anglia, to help raise vital funds for EAAA. Chris March 2020 and now that 24/7 service will be bolstered by a 24/7 was also recently voted EAAA’s Most Inspirational Patient for 2021 helicopter operation, too, for the very first time. for his inspiring recovery and attitude to life.
By becoming a 24/7 service by air and by car, EAAA estimates it can be tasked around 600 more times a year, helping hundreds more patients in
Chris said: “I’m still not 100% but I know how close I came to dying and I’m just so, so glad that I didn’t and so grateful to the East Anglian Air Ambulance that they were there to save my life. Diana Knight’s Hyena Hierarchy
If Lockdown really does end soon then the next meeting of North Norfolk Photographic Society might be a real meeting with real people! But meantime, their last competition on 2nd June was held via Zoom, albeit with some 25 virtual attendees!
There were 8 Gold awards – the winners. They were Frederic Landes’ Linnet Nest Building, Paul Richards’ Brown Hare in a Blizzard, Lizzie Wallis’ Oystercatcher with Mussel, Diana Knight’s Hyena Hierarchy, Liz Akers’ First Light, Val Walker’s Mountain Clouded Yellow and Wildflower Meadow and Mick Walker’s Brown Hooded Kingfisher.

Cromer Cancer Unit Gets a Donation of £6146.13 from The Morley Club
In December 2019 Nicky Royle started to fundraise at the Morley Club for the new Cancer Unit at Cromer. He had been receiving treatment for throat cancer for the whole of that year and had to travel to Norwich regularly, so he understood all too well how very important it was to have a cancer unit nearer to home.
carried on the fundraising in his honour for the rest of the year, and although lockdown prevented many of the events that he had planned would take place, many people made donations in his memory.
By December 2020 the amount raised had more than doubled and the new unit has now received a cheque from the Morley Club for £6146.13, largely due to Nicky’s efforts and he would have been so very pleased with the result. Many thanks to everyone who helped with events and made donations
Sadly, he was told in Feb 2020 that, despite all the gruelling treatment he had gone through, his cancer had returned and there was nothing else that could be done for him but he continued with his efforts until he died in July 2020 by which time he had raised £3058.95.
He was very popular at the Morley and after his death other members

Hospital seeks volunteers to join garden team
Green fingered volunteers are helping make things rosier at North Walsham hospital’s garden.
A new group is giving spare time to prune, weed and generally tidy the grounds of the War Memorial Hospital off Yarmouth Road.

Age Concern Day Centre Re-Opens in Sheringham
Let the kids go wild with reading this summer
Visit your local library to register your children for the Summer Reading Challenge for children aged 5 – 11 and pick up their free packs. Every week there will be different activity sheet available throughout the summer holidays. These activities will be in a bag of books hand selected by staff although, of course children can also choose their own books.
AGE CONCERN NORTH NORFOLK is delighted to announce that we will once again be opening our doors to clients at the Day Centre (Day Services Hub) for lunches, on a phased return basis. We have used the time over the last few months to re-furbish the Day Centre and to keep it as “Covid Secure” as possible. We have also been closely following Government Guidelines, but as an essential Mental and Physical Health Support Service we have the freedom to decide exactly when we reopen, as long as we keep our numbers within recommended limits. Please note that the Meals on Heels service will also continue for those of you who prefer that option.
This year the theme of the challenge is World Wildlife Heroes and is running in partnership with the Reading Agency and the World Wildlife Fund.
The re-opening Programme at the Day Centre will be as follows, but please ensure that you book in advance, (01263 821188) as places are on a first come, first served, basis and may be subject to change: Open on a Friday for two weeks – 16th and 23rd July, 2021 Open on a Tuesday and Friday for two weeks – 27th and 30th July, 3rd and 6th August 2021 We then plan to be open 4 days (Tuesday to Friday) from week commencing 10th August 2021.
If your child loves nature, the environment, animals, bugs and slugs this challenge is the perfect opportunity to foster a love of reading too.
Most importantly the Summer Reading Challenge is fun and engaging for children. In addition, it can support your child to keep up with their reading during the long summer holiday and nurture a lifelong love of books with all the benefits that brings.
Norfolk Library and Information Service is also hosting some exciting children’s author and storytelling events on-line, including award winning author, vet, and wildlife enthusiast Gill Lewis and children’s TV presenter, author and vet Jess French.

Ride for Life across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire returns
All the beauty of the East Anglian countryside awaits cyclists who sign up to ride three counties in three days as part of a returning charity challenge.
most vulnerable families.
“The event is both suitably challenging for experienced cyclists and fun for newer ones. There’s the possibility to sign up for just one day as opposed to the full three, too.”
Ride for Life, back from Friday, 8 October to Sunday, 10 October, sees participants covering over 200 miles to raise thousands of pounds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Registration for the three days is £100, with participants expected to target £600 sponsorship. Registration for a day is £30, with a £150 sponsorship target.
The first day starts at Johnston Logistics UK, the event sponsor in Snetterton, heads to The Nook, EACH’s hospice just south of Norwich, then down to Ipswich. The second takes riders past The Treehouse, EACH’s hospice in Ipswich, and across to Cambridge. The final day passes EACH’s hospice in Milton, just north of Cambridge, before heading back to Snetterton.
Becky Redbond, EACH Events Fundraising Manager, said: “We’re so excited for the return of Ride for Life. After all the time in lockdown over the last year, there has perhaps never been a better time to get out around the region and enjoy the stunning countryside scenes.

Ride for Life has been a flagship event for EACH since 1993, with Johnston Logistics UK sponsoring it since the inception. This year’s staging is in memory of Richard Johnston, the founder of Johnston Logistics UK who sadly died in December 2018.
Rob McIndoe, Johnston Logistics UK Director, said: “As I found out in 2018, Ride for Life is a tough three-day cycling challenge, but it’s definitely worth the effort! EACH is very close to our hearts and there are few more important causes than supporting children and their families through such difficult times. It’s even more of an honour this year as it’s in memory of our founder, Richard Johnston, who was a dedicated supporter of the children’s hospices.”

become compressed and unable to inflate therefore preventing poor Pip from being able to breathe. Luckily for Pip our team were on site and ready to help. The location of the damage to the trachea and extent of the chest damage were determined using our onsite CT scanner which allowed us to build a 3D picture of the trachea and chest. Our team undertook a delicate surgery to repair the tracheal damage using our endoscope to avoid the need for conventional “open” surgery. At the same time our team placed chest drains to remove the air accumulation around the lungs allowing the lungs to reinflate. This type of life saving procedure required use of our specialised monitoring equipment anaesthetic
protocols and we are delighted to say that despite all the severity of her injuries Pip has made a full recovery.
The hidden danger of collars
Most of our canine companions wear collars and indeed it helps fulfil the legal requirement to have a tag with required details. However, collars can also pose some hidden dangers for our furry friends. This beautiful lady, Pip, was rushed to Toll Barn Vets as an out of hours emergency when she had been playing with her canine companion. During the play session both dogs became entwined in each other’s collars.
When Pip arrived at the surgery she was in shock and had a lot of air trapped underneath her skin (subcutaneous emphysema). The cause of this air was damage to the trachea (windpipe) as a result of the collar putting pressure on the trachea and causing it to rupture. This in turn caused a life-threatening condition known as tension pneumothorax – a condition where the area around the lungs fills with air under a high tension and causes the lungs to
Sadly, similar injuries occur when dogs become caught on their crates by their collars and in the most severe cases these can cause life changing injuries.
Whilst collars are often needed it is important to be aware of the potential harm they can cause and consider removing them prior to unsupervised dogs playing together or being crated unsupervised.

Coltishall Clinic - Introducing Breakthrough Technology to Tone muscle fibres to maximum intensity solely by voluntary exercises. and Shape the Body The machines work by inducing forced muscle contractions as muscle
Is it possible to build muscle without breaking a sweat? Yes, indeed it is. We now have the technology to build muscle and burn fat- all whilst you are comfortably reading your favorite book or magazine!
This is all about shaping your body in an effortless way. 4 out of 10 people say that they are not happy with their bodies. 42% of people dislike their abdomen, followed by their thighs. Now, they can do something about this- in an easy way.
Thanks to our machines- high focused electromagnetic energy is used to induce supra-physiological muscle contractions to build muscle and burn fat. Supra-physiological means it is not possible to stimulate so many
TRUSTEES NEEDED (All Ages)
If you are interested in supporting elderly people, do you have 6 hours a month for a year or more, that you could give to a good cause?
Age Concern is expanding its services under new management, and following the pandemic, is looking for new Trustees. You might be a young adult from age 18 wanting to gain experience, someone a little older with time to spare, or a newly retired professional such as a doctor, solicitor, social worker or accountant, with proven experience, wanting to “give something back” to your community. Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, Meals on Heels and other services. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support and welcome your ideas.
fibres are exposed to electromagnetic energy. So these are involuntary contractions: much more powerful than the voluntary contractions. These are similar to the ones experienced during real exercise: stomach crunches and squats for the buttocks.
How does this compare to other muscle stimulating machines? This is more powerful than electrical muscle stimulation devices such as TENS machines or micro-current machines. Electrical devices can only stimulate superficial muscle fibres and are painful. Electro-magnetic devices do not require electrodes or needles and stimulate the whole muscles, which are subjected to intense contractions due to the magnetic field. So this is like exercise without exercising and you get more benefit than from intense exercises alone.
What happens during the treatment? You will be lying comfortably on the couch. Treatment applicator/s will be positioned over the muscles to be treated. You will feel pleasant sensation. There are muscle contractions but no pain. After 30 min the applicator/s will be removed and you will be able to resume normal activities immediately.
What precautions are needed during treatment? No electronic devices/ mobile phones/ jewellery or metal objects are permitted due to strong magnetic fields. You are welcome to bring a book/ magazine to read.
How many sessions are recommended? 4-6 sessions, two sessions a week.

Local MP Champions Our Hedgehogs
The hedgehog is regularly voted as Britain’s most popular wild mammal. We all love them, but their numbers are under serious threat. The most recent report from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society indicates that there may be as few as 1 million hedgehogs left in the UK today. 1 million might sound like a big number. But actually, it is a decrease of over 50% in the last 20 years.
Lockdown has focused our minds and made us re-evaluate our lives. I’m glad, because the environment has taken even more of a centre stage and heightened the understanding of the delicately constructed ecosystems on which our society is built. Perhaps these factors, along with our fondness of them, have caused over 100,000 people to put their names to a petition, calling on Parliament to discuss the protection afforded to hedgehogs.
Despite our love of these special creatures, how much do we really understand about them. Perhaps you didn’t know that hedgehogs are one of only three animals to hibernate in the United Kingdom. They are lactose intolerant and prefer that you leave cat or dog food out for them with some water. We all know they only come out at night, but they’re also pretty quick when they want to be and can run over six feet per second!
Their dwindling numbers is what is causing many to be concerned. It is alarming and we need to start acting now, to reverse this trend.
!!
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society is asking for hedgehogs to be moved from schedule 6 to schedule 5 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to allow them greater protections. However, the 7th Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Act, potentially provides recommendations to DEFRA on major changes to these schedules. This 2021 review seeks to change the ‘Eligibility Criteria’ of the hedgehog, currently listed on schedule 6. It is proposed that the country-based statutory nature conservation bodies will only retain protected status for species that are in imminent danger of extinction in Great Britain.
This shift in focus will preferentially consider GB Red Listed species, as defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The effect of the proposed changes could mean that rather than increasing protection for hedgehogs, their current minor level of protection may be removed.
I know from having visited ‘Hedgehog Haven’, a local organisation in my constituency, committed to the protection of hedgehogs, just how important governmental action is in upholding our collective custodial responsibility, owed to these animals. Experts at the centre outlined their satisfaction with the decision to ban the keeping of hoglets following an amendment to this effect, in the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Having also been working in Parliament, on the Environmental Audit Select Committee, I am aware that more needs to still be done, to protect and enhance our domestic ecosystems. However, we’ve
01692 404050
Whilst the work that the government continues to do is welcome, I want to see this debate really initiate a step-change in the long-term prospects of the hedgehog population. I think that for us to up-end the statistics, there are a few salient issues that should be addressed. I think that the Joint Nature Conservation Committee’s review must strengthen protective legislation for hedgehogs and as we saw in the Environmental Audit Committee’s recent findings on biodiversity in the UK, we have more to do. Enhancing protection for our precious hedgehog is good starting point.
And let’s not forget that everyone’s contribution is important. The hedgehog is known as the “gardener’s friend” because it eats caterpillars, beetles and other critters. Combined, our gardens provide a space for wildlife larger than all our National Nature Reserves and so by gardening in a wildlife-friendly way we can help our prickly little friends and help protect them in our own backyards. History of North Walsham Salvation Army A new book on the history of the Salvation Army in North Walsham is available
Thanks to the North Walsham Community Archive, a large number of early local Salvation Army photographs, with names, were provided and these give a continuing picture of events from the very beginning. They include a view of the first temporary hall at Park Court, New Road, and an interior view of the current hall for its first Harvest Festival in 1900. A descendant of 19-year-old Fanny Evans, the first officer who started the Corps in 1885, was able to provide detailed information about this formidable lady and enabled more research of that initial period to be carried out.
The history of Furze Hill House, the former home of Commissioner Mildred Duff, is also covered, together with details of her fascinating life, and local Salvation Army records provide detailed information of events from 1956 to the present day.
An interesting appendix gives details, plus many photographs, of North Walsham Salvationist family members who gave the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars and a final appendix lists all the officers commanding North Walsham Corps from 1885 to the present.
The reader will gain an insight into the important part that North Walsham Corps has played in local life. The Salvation Army in North Walsham - 1885-2020 is available from the North Walsham Salvation Salvation Army news Army Charity Shop priced £5. At long last the Salvation Army Hall Lane North Walsham are resuming their regular Sunday morning meetings at 10.30am from the beginning of August. 'Although we have had some occasional meetings when allowed it is difficult with limited nos and with no singing etc' says Major Richard Durrant of the North Walsham Corps. 'Whilst we are awaiting full details we are looking forward to welcoming folks to join us in worship with fewer restrictions in place. We will still be cautious with hand gel available, the hall will be well ventilated, and folks can wear masks of course if they wish to. We do though look forward to joining together again in fellowship and worship, and our Sunday morning meetings swill now continue every week'
The Corps has also been holding an online meeting every Sunday morning, and this will continue as well for the immediate future, and most weeks these have attracted 150-160 online worshippers. 'Now is the time though to meet in person, and all are welcome' says Richard. If anyone wants to know more they can contact Richard on (01692) 652263 or richard.durrant@salvationarmy.org.uk

‘Vivid reality’ of Eriksen’s sudden cardiac arrest shows just how fast you need to react to save a life • UK Coaching’s CEO Mark Gannon has said that Christian Eriksen’s collapse has shown just how fast you need to react in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest
• The charitable organisation has produced a free lifesaving digital learning toolkit – funded by Sport England – to help people know what to do in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, potentially saving thousands of lives every year
The events of the match between Denmark and Finland on Saturday, 12 June, with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest whilst playing, have put into perspective how essential it is that people involved in sport have the knowledge and confidence to respond quickly and appropriately in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
UK Coaching, funded by Sport England and in collaboration with Resuscitation Council UK, St John Ambulance and Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, has produced a free toolkit to help people understand how to respond and act quickly to an SCA.
An SCA is when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping blood around the body and vital organs due to an abnormal heart rhythm. Each year in the UK, approximately 60,000 people have an SCA out of hospital, with only 1 in 10 surviving.
If effective action is taken within the first minute, it can treble someone’s chance of survival.
Funded by Sport England, the toolkit is aimed at the sport and physical activity industry – from coaches to instructors, staff, spectators and parents – everyone can play a part in improving the chances of survival through the right information, training and support.
UK Coaching’s CEO Mark Gannon, said: “The vivid reality of Eriksen’s collapse and resuscitation last weekend have shown just how fast you need to react in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. It’s left many questioning if they would know what to do, where the nearest defib is, and most importantly the need to give everyone, from coaches to players, facility staff, parents and spectators, the knowledge and confidence to act fast – because every second really does count.
That’s why we’re encouraging all involved in sport to undertake the free online training, fully funded by Sport England – 30 minutes of your time could save a life. Both Martin Johnson and Fabrice Muamba feature within the interactive online course, and I’m very grateful for their support in helping us to raise awareness of the issue. Moving forward, every sporting venue must have an AED on site and sports should be making the course mandatory. Every person trained, could be another life saved.”
Steve Humphries, whose son Joe died of a cardiac arrest aged 14, started the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust in his memory and works tirelessly to raise awareness, imploring people to take training to know how to respond quickly and appropriately. Humphries, said: “Twelve people under the age of 30 die every week in the UK from SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome – that can cause a cardiac arrest). Some of these happen in front of coaches, during or shortly
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
22
after playing sport. My message for coaches is that there is a golden opportunity to save a life, should a sudden cardiac arrest happen in front of them.”
Patron of the Trust is England rugby legend Martin Johnson CBE, who has backed UK Coaching’s training and urged the British public to become a nation of life savers.
Johnson, said:“Being aware of sudden cardiac arrest and having a bit of training can make all the difference. I have heard some horrific stories and know that things could have turned out differently. Getting training is so vital and it is relatively easy to learn. Take UK Coaching’s online course so that if you find yourself in that moment, you will know what to do; and know that you are giving that person the best chance they have of survival.”
Adding to the call is former Bolton Wanderers midfielder and SCA survivor Fabrice Muamba, who experienced his ordeal in 2012, playing against Tottenham in the FA Cup quarter-finals in front of 30,000 football fans and a TV audience of millions.
Muamba, said: “Coaches are not expected to be as skilled as doctors, but it’s about knowing the fundamentals: getting someone to phone 999, starting CPR and using a defibrillator before the ambulance arrives. That will significantly increase someone’s chances of surviving a car diac arrest if one happens in your session, at an event or during a match.”
The toolkit is now available at ukcoaching.org and can be accessed in bitesize chunks. It includes: • practical information and advice • an immersive scenario-based eLearning course • a series of high impact and informative videos • insightful interviews and compelling written features with survivors, their coaches and victims’ families • signposting to further support.
Learners will receive a certificate for completing the eLearning and will be awarded ½ a Developmental CPD point by CIMSPA. SCAs can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere. Learn how to save a life. www.ukcoaching.org/courses/elearningcourses/sudden-cardiac-arrest

Meet your new lawyer: a robot by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
The French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said, ‘Hell is other people’. ("L'enfer, c'est les autres"). So, if you don’t much like your solicitor, help is on its way. Meet your new lawyer: Robert the Robot!
Clients still want a lawyer they can relate to. The days of clients being amazed that the young woman standing before them was a real solicitor have gone. The old guard are no longer perturbed by their solicitor being from a different culture and religion than them. But are clients yet ready for a robot?
Sure, we will all have an advanced version of Siri who can answer our questions, in much the same way as many of us now turn to google. Doctors are under the same threat, as technology can be better at medical diagnosis than a human.
This Brave New World, dystopian vision of the future was described in the leading article in today’s (online!) Law Society Gazette. Just as I was pondering the subject matter of this month’s article, this popped into my inbox.
This bleak vision of a legal profession largely replaced by artificial intelligence (A.I.) and self-service legal advice has been published by a Law Society-sponsored initiative. The report, based on projections by a 'Delphi panel' of experts, forecasts a 'savage reduction' in full-time jobs by 2050. That’s okay, I’ll be 86 by then.
Those human lawyers who remain, will work alongside technology, and be required to take 'performance-enhancing medication in order to optimise their own productivity and effectiveness'. There have already been quips in the online responses about ‘litigator-strength coffee’. I hear that in high-octane spheres of the legal profession ‘performance-enhancing substances’ have long been as prevalent as in show-business.
The report, Images of the Future Worlds Facing the Legal Profession 2020-2030, is the first fruit of the Society's Future Worlds 2050 project. The project aims to enable 'raw, frank and honest discussions around what clients will need in the future and to think about the legal business models our members may adopt', the Law Society said.
This 'Delphi panel' foresees surviving lawyers working alongside robots. Among the forecasts is a prediction that employment in the UK legal sector is already declining, following a peak in 2016. Not with private client work in north Norfolk, it ain’t.
The report also cites research suggesting that 85% of job concepts in 2030 do not yet exist, and half of people think that the roles and skills of the next two decades are impossible to predict within their industry'.
Apart from advances in technology, the panel considers predictions about the dominance of
China in the world economy, climate change and 'rising social movements and resurgence of the civil rights movement'. Law Society president has said: 'The legal profession is at a pivotal moment, as is the world in which we live. There are a plethora of forces shifting our collective experience and the business environment. If we’ve learnt anything from 2020, it’s that the future can still catch you unawares. She reckons that there is likely to be a rise of climate litigation against corporations or governments.
There is something to be said for working in the more people-centred section of the legal world. It is comforting to know that my 6 years of training and thirty years of post-qualification experience in the world of private client work makes me less likely to be replaced by a robot.

Successful Consultation for North Walsham high Street Heritage Action Zone
On June 16 and 17, Influence and Heta Architects hosted a successful pop-up exhibition on the Placemaking and Public Realm Masterplanning for the HSHAZ, North Walsham’s historic town centre, in a temporary space between the Shambles Café and St. Nicholas Church.
engagement and feedback bodes well for the successful implementation of this initiative and for its lasting legacy.”
Cllr Richard Kershaw, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Growth, added: “The HAZ funding represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve the Public realm in North Walsham. The pop up exhibition was well attended by a broad range of residents and businesses alike and the Masterplan was well received and has generated some very positive feedback particularly around the greening of the town and the interest in the historic buildings we have in the town.
The local community – residents, local businesses and visitors alike – were all invited to attend and have their say around what they thought would work best for the town centre. Members from Influence, Heta, and BSP Consulting were on hand to answer questions and take visitors through the proposals. Ideas were presented via boards that encouraged feedback and comment, as well as through presentations on the masterplan concepts.
“I am so pleased the Cultural aspects of the programme have been welcomed. It has been
On display were initial proposals for the public realm masterplan, which identifies an overall vision for the town centre designed as a programme of projects that can be delivered as further funding is identified and secured, as well as initial concept ideas for how certain key areas identified in the masterplan could be re-imagined. Highway improvement options and potential story themes for a shared town identity were also shared.
Additional activities included talks by Influence’s Shona Hatton and Kathryn Dunk on how landscape architecture can connect communities, and an engaging tour of the town centre led by Rob Knee, one of North Walsham’s unofficial historians! The Shambles Café next door, run by Rebecca Lysaght, very generously donated afternoon tea to fortify visitors.
The exhibition saw a steady stream of engaged visitors, and local business owners turned up at the end of each day to discuss their needs and aspirations. An extra evening session was organised the following week to ensure as many people as possible were able to contribute.
The concept ideas for specific areas including the Market Cross, The Shambles, Black Swan Garden, and the Church Entrance and Market Place drew the most feedback, and although there was a wide variety of opinions, in general people favoured proposals that encouraged shared activity, easy pedestrian access, and wildlife and biodiversity.
Robert Young, Assistant Director for Sustainable Growth for NNDC, said of the event: “This was a brilliant collaboration of community, business and public sector organisations and a key milestone for one of the Council’s priority projects. The level of
encouraging to see so many people come and get involved and give their suggestions.”
The team also attended the recent North Walsham Funday where lots of people dropped in to find out more and give their views on the identity and future of the town, and a further exhibition is being hosted at Paston College.

Chorizo, Pea and Parma Ham Risotto
We've been incredibly busy at the Grove since reopening and it's been so lovely to welcome back old friends and new faces to both our restaurants - the a la carte, still going strong, and of course Sundown, our new stonebaked pizza and Norfolk tapas restaurant set in two giant tipis in the grounds of the Grove.
Our wonderful staff have done an amazing job getting things up and running to the very high standards we had pre-Covid, and it been very rewarding to see some excellent reviews and generous compliments. They're a top team and we are very proud of them all.
This risotto dish is a really useful string to your culinary bow as it can be adapted for pretty much everything. Our sous chef Kharn is particularly fond of this version, possibly because the parma strips are perfect for snacking on, but also for various professional reasons I'm sure.
Bookings available The Grove, Cromer 01263 821463
Ingredients 2 tbsp mild olive oil 1 grated onion 2 grated garlic cloves
250g arborio risotto rice 100ml white wine 1 ltr chicken stock cube, made with 1 stock cube 250g chorizo, roughly diced 200g frozen peas 6 slices of Parma ham 75g grated Grana Padano cheese 25g butter freshly ground black pepper
Method ● Heat the oil in a large, non-stick saucepan over a medium heat; add the onion and garlic and fry for 2-3 minutes until softened and beginning to colour. ● Add the risotto rice to the pan and stir well for 30-40 seconds, until the oil has coated the grains of rice. ● Pour in half of the wine and allow to simmer for 30-40 seconds, then add all of the stock and bring to the boil, stirring well. ● Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the rice is almost tender and the risotto is creamy in appearance.
● In a separate pan, fry the chorizo for a couple of minutes and drain off the oil. ● Lay out the parma ham on baking paper on a tray and bake in the oven 220c for three minutes; leave to cool and harden.
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
26
● Stir in the remaining wine, the chorizo and the frozen peas, then continue to cook, stirring constantly, for a further 4-5 minutes, or until the chicken and peas are heated through and the rice is tender with a slight bite.
● Remove the pan from the heat, then stir in the butter and cheese. Plate and add the strips of ham as garnish; season with black pepper.
Weather Forecast
The past three months came out as predicted the main point being the slow transition from winter-spring-summer temperature wise plus an erratic distribution of rainfall. Sea temperature was below or well below average and with persistence winds in from the sea beach weather it wasn’t.
The next three months will continue the improvement slowly establishing itself giving us longer finer spells and higher temperatures although the cold North Sea will be continuing its influence on us from time to time so a few degrees either side of twenty will be what we will get the majority of the time. Rainfall is always difficult to forecast longer term and summertime storms will occur but where and when is impossible to predict but there will be some. Best described as a typical British summer. Seasonal Treats Salmon, Asparagus and Feta Quiche
For the pastry: 8 oz self-raising flour 4 oz butter/Marg Salt Approx 4 tblsp very cold water
We can all enjoy a little of the more expensive ingredients that arrive seasonally without breaking the bank, by finding clever ways to make a little go a long way. I love making quiche, and it’s such a great way to stretch more expensive ingredients. Hot roast smoked salmon is a rich and indulgent way to enjoy salmon, with a huge depth of flavour that works so well in a quiche, and marries perfectly with asparagus, a seasonal favourite.
Feeding these things to a family of four is rather costly though, hence the recipe featured in this issue. Don’t be afraid to make your own pastry; if you don’t over-handle it or over roll it and use cold bowl/knife and butter you will be fine. I also prefer self-raising flour as it gives the pastry a better texture. Homemade always tastes better. This recipe is for a large quiche for a family, but you can easily adjust it for a smaller one. Use good eggs for quiches; it makes all the difference. Feta is a deliciously light cheese to finish the recipe off; all in all a wonderful taste of summer!
Carefully pour over the egg mix, being sure not to disturb the salmon and asparagus too much.
Crumble up the feta and place on the top and put into a preheated oven on 180° for approx 40 mins, or until set.
Serve immediately. Also delicious eaten cold.

For the filling: 1-piece hot roast smoked salmon 1 bunch asparagus, chopped into bite sized pieces 8 eggs, beaten with a little single cream Pinch nutmeg Dried or fresh dill ½ pack feta cheese Salt and pepper

Make the pastry by cutting the butter into small pieces and adding to the sifted flour with a pinch of salt.
Rub in until mixture resembles crumbs, and add the water, bringing it together with a knife and then into a ball with your hands and cover with clingfilm, placing into fridge until needed.
Meanwhile, lightly steam the asparagus (only for a few minutes) and set aside.
Beat the eggs and cream with a pinch of nutmeg and a flat teaspoon of dill.
Roll out pastry and line a large, fluted flan dish, pricking the base all over with a fork.
Crumble the salmon into the base and add the asparagus, ensuring even distribution.

Chances Project
When Liza started working with the Chances project, she hadn’t had a job in nine months – but that was about to change. After Covid, everything was different: her employer had to let her go, and she’d lost confidence that she’d be able to work again. Her housing situation was precarious, too. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to afford her rent, and wanted to move to a more affordable flat. Liza wanted to work, and was motivated to find a job, but she needed confidence, and support, to help her take the next step.
Swallows Coffee Shop
Vegan Light Gluten-Free Lunches & & Dairy-Free Delicious Friendly Eat In or Take Away Cakes Brentnall House 32 Vicarage Street
Chances provided that support. Liza worked one-to-one with Eniko, one of our Advocates, to update her CV, assist her with job searching, and helped her access opportunities to improve her English. In less than a month, Liza had attended an interview and been offered a new job, as well as securing a permanent tenancy with Clarion. Eniko even helped Liza search for used furniture around Holt, so that she could furnish her new home with a dining table and chairs.

This is why Chances works. Advocates offer one-to-one, tailored support to help you take the next step towards work. We have time to spend with you, in person and face to face. It’s not just about pushing you into a job or getting you to log onto a website every day to prove you want to work. We’re here to support your wellbeing as well as your job search. You choose to work with us. Take a chance on us, we’ll create chances for you.

292. Mate in two moves
Solution to No. 291: 1. Qf1, no threat. 1… e1Q+2. Ne6 (h5 now guarded by white Bd1); 1… exf1- 2. Bh5; 1… hxg5 2. Rf6 (g5 now self-blocked); 1… h5 2. Ne6; 1… exd12. Qa6 (set 2. Qe6); 1… R2. Rf6 (g5 now guarded by white Bc1); 1… h5 2. Ne6 (h5 self-blocked). Three line-openings by promoting black Pe2, one by the black R, and two self-blocks by black Ph6. Probably difficult for OTB players with the Q sacrifice key, the check permitted to the white K, and the complete absence of any threat. Also the set Q mate on e6 is replaced by a more distant one on a6.
The diagram of No. 292, 1… B- is set with 2. Re4, but no mate for 1… Kd4. Each of two possible moves by one particular white piece provide very pleasant mates, but which one copes with everything? Difficulty 2.

The Norfolk Coast Partnership
The Norfolk Coast Partnership are delighted to introduce our updated logo. Eagle eyed readers may have already noticed it in our Norfolk Coast Guardian publication or on the Coastal Code poster produced as the coast reopened in April to visitors and locals.

This refresh has been developed as we work on producing a new website. Both the previous logo and website have certainly stood the test of time, having been created over 14 years ago. You’ll see that we have retained the key elements that represent the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as the wildlife, landscape, including built environment, and dark skies reference. New icons added recognise the part that people, leisure and sustainable transport play in our management of this special place and the line linking these follows (roughly) the shape of our coastline, with the colours representing the fluidity of this and land/marsh/sea interface.

To save any wastage, there won’t be a sudden change as we use up any printed resources that carry our old logo, but rather a gradual transition. Hopefully I will have news of our new, more user friendly, website in the coming months.

Five years on and going strong
Thursday 24th - Sunday 27th June saw four fun filled days return to North Walsham after 18 months of covid restrictions preventing such events. Chairman Colin Jeary said,'At times it was touch and go if we could make the event happen whilst maintaining current guidelines but working closely with NNDC safety advisory team we made sure that the event was planned and carried out as safely as possible.' Events over the weekend included a funfair, Epic Norfolks 5km road race, a 80's disco, car boot sale, an 11 hour Rock n' Roll all dayer, as well as the carnival parade.
Henleys Estate Agents in Cromer and North Walsham are celebrating 5 years in business in July. To add to their celebrations Henleys Residential Sales & Lettings, Cromer have just won The British Property Award for NR26-28.
Their team performed outstandingly throughout the extensive judging period, which focused on customer service levels.
Sunday saw the community come out on to the memorial park and they were greeted to a Fun dog show, dog agility, charity stalls and new for this year a spectacular stunt display courtesy of Stannage stunt team. On top of all this there was classic cars and music so something for everyone.
Henleys Residential Sales & Lettings, Cromer have now been shortlisted for a number of national awards which will be announced later in the year.
The British Property Awards provide agents throughout the UK with an invaluable opportunity to compare the service that they provide against the service provided by their local, regional and national competition.
Agents who go that extra mile and provide outstanding levels of customer service are rewarded with our accolade, which acts as a beacon to highlight these attributes to their local marketplace.
Colin added he was very pleased with how the event had ran and said it was a great feeling seeing the town coming out and supporting the efforts of such a small committee. The parade was reasonably well attended with the following category winners - walkers - North Walsham Community Fridge, small float - Cromer community church, large float - Lewis's fire and rescue and business - Drurys environmental waste / haulage.
Director Jeff Cox says “. The past year has been extremely challenging and my team have gone the extra mile on every house sale. We are delighted to have been given this award and I am so pleased for my team who have been absolutely fantastic throughout. This award is for them!”
North Walsham Funday would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who helped make this year’s event successful and we look forward to seeing you next year - 23rd June 26th June.
